Review Piyawat Thai Restaurant - Bendigo

Jenny Reid
Had the loveliest birthday in this exposed brick restaurant. The special fried rice had a fantastic smokey flavour The staff were attentive & on point. I ate way too much & should've worn elastic waist pants 🤣

Food is average. I made the purchase on 11/5 and asked for printed tax invoice with itemised list to claim Victoria Dining Program but was refused. Only handwritten invoice was provided and the staff double ensured it will work. Eventually, my claim was declined.

The entrees were fantastic and we were looking forward to our mains, seafood Phad Thai for me and chicken Phad Thai for hubby. Arrrgh! Sooo sweet! I actually shuddered at one point trying to get through the cloying sweetness. Will stick to our guys at Lansell Plaza from now on for the best Pad Thai in town

Was once a really great place to dine, lost its edge a little, had the Pad Thai, really shouldn't get that wrong, was very sweet and the meat was dry, and for a combo 1 prawn, 12 of us on our table and the best was a 7 out of 10, most around 5 to 6, hopefully they were just having a bad night as this place once was one of the better restaurants in town.

Nice looking restaurant. Food was edible but won't return. Beef was tough and not overly hot when delivered to the table.

Meals were ok but very standard Thai fare, night before went to bunja and it was exceptional though it had lower ratings. Sorry think the ratings are wrong.

Food here is incredibly good. It's a warm, inviting, and had good service. Will definitely be visiting here again.

Loved the food there. We ordered take away and all the food including entrie was super tasty and fresh.

This is a really pretty little restaurant that was probably once a house. Beautifully decorated in traditional Thai style. Service was very slow and the staff appeared to be run off their feet. Pad See Ew was nothing like the usual type I’ve had. It wasn’t at all sweet which it should be if the right soy is used and it lacked flavour. The Larb Gai salad was good and so was the chicken and vegetable stir fry. Meal sizes are very generous. All in all an average meal.

Close to the Bendigo centre, a cute little residence setup to be a doorway to Thailand.

Environment 5
They have gone all out for a really authentic look, I loved some of the decorations, very cool, but not cluttered, so it's good to see the effort they went to to welcome guests.

Service 5
Quick to greet and seat. They gave water on sit down, were polite, patient to let us decide on our choices and quick to take the order. Food came in a matter of minutes after order.

Flavour 4
Very tasty, I enjoyed the Pad Thai and my family liked the fried rice, the duck salad was a let down as everyone found it too salty and I could not taste the duck. The green curry vegetables were too big and it had too much spice for my family, but I found it stock standard.

Value for money 4
I found here most places offering Asian food is about the same price, but $76 to have dinner for four which is reasonable.

Good intentions but spoiled by too much ingredient substitution and overt sweetness in some dishes. Thai salads using lettuce leaves instead of green papaya - you’ll get the drift. Otherwise, nice fresh ingredients sensitively prepared. Not super spicy - probably tamed to suit Western palates. Otherwise, pleasant location and staff. You could do worse but with a bit of attention would be so much better.

I find Melbourne hit and miss when it comes to Thai food. Staying in Bendigo for work so I thought I would give Piyawat Thai a go. Let’s just say, the green curry is amazing complimented by coconut rice. I will be here again.

Lazy Sunday night and looking for some tasty eats Piyawat has it all, warm inviting staff, true Thai food with flavours to match. Started with the fish cakes, Tom Kha soup and finished with the Nam Sod great flavours in all dishes with matching Chang.

Wines are limited and could use some help as the region is rich with local varieties.

Will be back

I was visiting Bendigo with my uncle over the weekend of Queen's Birthday and was looking for a place to have dinner. This is the first restaurant that showed up on Zomato while searching for Thai food. Since it was the weekend the place was pretty crowded and we had to reserve a table. The ambiance of the place was good and so was the food. Service could have been better. The waiting staff seemed to have no prior experience and were confused when we ordering beverages. But the food and ambiance of the place made up for the average service. Can go back for the good food.

A beautiful setting & even better food! I love Thai food & this was one of the best I’ve eaten. We arrived earlier than advertised opening hours, but were welcomed in anyway. Thanks for a lovely experience.

Very pretty restaurant, if only every Thai place is designed this pretty. The food is also not bad too and the service is good. We ordered Thai fish cake which was very yummy, and its sauce was served with nuts, something that I didn't see in any other Thai restaurants. We also ordered beef salad. The beef was sliced very nicely and the sauce made the salad tasted fresh. Another dish that we ordered was Pad Thai, this one was good but it is your typical Pad Thai that you probably find in other places as well. Lastly we ordered ice lemon tea, which came out rather weird because it didn't look like tea. But it still tasted nice.

Average Thai food but seems very popular locally. services are quite good. Stuff is very friendly. We have lots of Thai restaurants with better curry in Melb cbd.

Beautifully presented place. Food was great a little on the tame side with spicy hot yet full of flavors & definitely no complaints. The table service was very good. Will b back without a problem. Not sure what the older reviews r saying with the bad food & service. Could b new owners/management or that they have listened to the complaints & addressed them. This is a MUST dine for Thai food in the area.

Went for dinner at this venue on easter Saturday. Even though the only table booking they had was outside they quickly offered us a table inside as soon as it became available. Food was fast, fresh and delicious considering how busy they were. Will be back again soon.

Back here after 7 years walked in atmosphere great decor also good nice table in the corner Thursday night looks reasonably busy .My friend and I shared a mixed entree it came out with a smile I was expecting wow I got bland spring rolls ok chicken skewers with no peanut sauce I asked the waitress she said do you want sauce I said YES , anyway chicken was very dry so onto the main dishes Penang curry chicken and the mossumun beef the penang sauce I asked for medium I got very @mild it was ok my friend wanted more of stew.on in her mossumun beef and she has tried many from all over Australia anyway service 7 out of 10 food 5 out of 10 , shame with so much expectations probably won't go back

Over rated! Terrible x 7; OK x 3: Nice x 3. I don't recall the last time I pushed food away after tasting it and without finishing it, but I did so with the mains. I feel the need to break this one down to detail. The service was fundamentally flawed, towards the business unnecessarily flipping tables resulting in the failures.
Terrible: 1 Service although prompt and friendly, we were served our soup immediately after our entrée and our mains were served while I was still eating my soup. The mains were cold by the time I got to them. .2 The entrée curry puff was tepid. 3 The beef salad was tough. 4 Green Gai, not spicy at all and was smelly. 5 Stir fried prawn with sweet chilli and cashew (not spicy) the cashews were soft I was expecting them to be crunchy with a slight fried char. 6 Only 1 nondescript and a bit rough house red wine available by the glass 7Rice (Tepid to cold)
Ok : 1 Spri(n)g roll, 2 Chicken Satay, 3 Green tea
Nice: 1 The prawn spri(n)g roll was delicious 2 The Prawn Tom Yum Nice, 3 Ice cream ( The Mango even nicer then coconut.)
They were quite concerned when I told them I had a terrible time, I paid my money and left. Being served 11 items within an hour, clearing ,resetting tables, and offering people take away containers, seemed to be the focus. Décor is terrific .

Went here based on other reviews and found it to be nice without being excellent or above average. I didn't feel the quality of the food deserved the rave reviews or high ratings. People who felt this is excellent need to try better Thai elsewhere.

Building is lovely and service was attentive and polite.
Food Is Life
Not entirely sure what all the hype is about this place.
Food was ok, didn't really seem fresh and lacked in not only flavour but visually :/
Staff were pleasent enough.
It is a small, packed in establishment so make sure if you do dine in, to make a reservation.

Best Thai food I've eaten in country Victoria by a country mile. Can't go past the Tom Yum soup. Excellent service. Can't fault this place.
Mick
Not the best Thai but I'm giving this the usual Bendigo treatment and rating it based on what's available nearby. The seating is very limited so be very sure to book in advance.

Food took quite a while to be served and staff were generally nice, but the food itself was just OK... I was heavily anticipating something special based on a lot of feedback I'd received so that may be why I felt let down with curries and rice that really didn't seem that special from a seasoning and freshness perspective.

I've consistently had good food here, both dine in and take away. Last night was no exception. Absolutely delicious. I had the Gang Panang with chicken, hubby had a yellow seafood curry. He said the flavour was good, but really only had prawns and muscles, onion and there was one piece of potato. My Mother in law enjoyed her pud satay with chicken. We shared coconut rice which which nice and fluffy.
The restaurant's decorations are authentic. It is always very busy here, my advise is book ahead or if you do walk in, get there early.

Very busy little restaurant, liked the look as you walk in and find the little courtyard out the front to be a good addition for more tables. Meals were amazing! So full of flavour and very quick, the roti bread however was a little overdone but still tasted ok... Service was good but a bit plain and lacked personality, all in all was a good dining experience
Lolly
This gorgeous little Thai restaurant made some of the best Thai I've had! Really fresh ingredients and friendly service!

You should probably put on the website that you are closed until October
Tasty Tasty
I felt we were chased out the door. We went on a Saturday night and they are meant to be open until 11:00pm and we booked in latish. By 930pm we felt we were being rushed out by wait staff floating around our table constantly and the bill being offered when we hadn't even finished our wine. Wait staff removed dishes without asking as well. Nice food and reasonably quick service but I would never return.
Taste Buds
Wow. This is a quaint little Thai Restaurant, but with Huge Tantalising Items on the Menu, after being seated and handed a Menu we where all so excited on what to try with all the dishes on offer, our meals came out in a timely fashion and the food and the service was fantastic.
So good - we reserved a table for next week.
Cant wait to try some more Thai.

Also think it was Excellent Thai. I haven't spent a night in Bendigo in a very long time so I wasn't at all familiar with the current favourites in town.

I was in town for one night with the family so after a lengthy discussion of the sort of food the family wanted and an extensive review of Urban Spoon and other online sources we settled on Piyawat Thai.

I'll start with the only negative first - well at least it's a negative for us South Aussies not used to BYO restaurants. Piyawat has a very small (although good) wine list but you are encouraged to BYO (bring your own). As strangers in town we struggled to find a convenient Liquor Store and settled on Coles Liquorland - which had a very disappointing range of wines and nothing local which considering Bendigo is a wine region is a sad comment on Coles stocking policies - however that is a little rant of mine best saved for elsewhere.

Ok, other than that - FANTASTIC. Some of the best Thai I've had in ages, a menu range to satisfy the two adults and kids aged 14 and 11 (although used to Thai food), friendly service and good speed of service - reasonably quick but not too fast.

The Laab Chicken was my favourite but there was also a seafood (prawn) red curry that had us spooning every last spoon of sauce of the plate. The youngest really enjoyed his fried rice (and the rest of us could understand why). We had 5 main dishes in all and could not fault any of them. For our Entree we had 2 plates of the Mixed Entree which covered the 3 older diners quite well and left plenty of spring rolls for the younger one to steal.

Total cost was just over $110 which we considered very good although admittedly the wine was not included in that bill (as we BYO'd).

Yes, we'd return however it may be some time till we are back in Bendigo - although its almost worth the 8 or 9 hour drive from Adelaide!

Excellent Thai. Great food, great price, big servings, absolutely love this place. The only flaw? Closed on Mondays and the yearly holiday close, but everyone needs a holiday!

Very nice authentic thai food at a good price from polite and efficient staff in a well located converted old house with good parking. Will definitely dine here again next time we come to Bendigo. B-man

Great food and place to eat. Great restaurant, always enjoy going here. been a loyal customer for a few years now. The inside has a nice vibe with all the decoration and the food is always great. Pricing is great, always full when you leave

Eat then get out!. The decor of this thai restaurant is fantastic, not overly gaudy as some tend to be. Lighting is cosy and music is low. Service was quite good, meals came out in a reasonable time and were very tasty with generous servings. While we were enjoying a good catch up we were getting the hurry up at 9pm on a Friday night!!! Yet to finish our meal, they tried again to get us to leave by hovering by our table and trying to remove our plates (which were obviously not finished). It got worse when the vacuuming started then they followed us out the door and quickly locked it. I quite like this restaurant, but it's hard to give good feedback when you're chased out the door! Maybe we should have booked for 5.30pm...?

Visiting from Melbourne to pick up kids on sat 4 May from Groove in the Moo concert.
Mediocre fare. Dished up too quickly to be freshly cooked.
Would avoid if you are used to Thai in the capital cities.

Best Thai restaurant I have ever been to. Never had a bad meal here

Loved it. Great atmosphere, cheap and big portioned meals. Smiling and friendly service. Would go back again.

Slightly different to Thai food that I used to have in Melbourne.. But, their food is still amazing! Ordered Beef Pad Grapow and Fried Snapper w/ chilli garlic sauce. Both ambience and service are nice. Worth a try when visiting Bendigo...

Great Thai. Cosy small-roomed restaurant. Music nice and low. Food excellent but avoid the agony of the Hot and Sour soup! One of Bendigo's best restaurants and the best Thai. Bunja Thai's food is nearly as good and is in a magnificent bank chamber if you want to impress visitors to Bendigo. Still great in 2013, 14 and15.

Lovely food, good atmosphere, friendly service, we especially liked the lime leaf stir fry!

The food is always fantastic! Curry puffs, oyster beef that melts in your mouth and isn't chocked full of MSG like other places and the coconut rice is to die for! Never had a bad meal from here!

Consistent Performer. As others have pointed out easily the best Thai in Bendigo. Never lets you down in taste, although food is westernised compared to traditional Thai, but where is it not. Service is spot on. If you are after Thai in Central VIC then this is the place.

Very generous servings and delivered on the spice but otherwise quite bland. My Gang dang red curry had salt and spice, but was sadly lacking sweet, sour or bitter and was without a hint of shallots, galangal or coriander root. Soggy carrot, beans, broccoli and cucumber (??) left me hankering for more authentic haunts on the Chao Phraya or Melbourne. But for a regional Victorian town it was pretty good, but head for Geelong to Kanitar for a winner.

Best. Thai. In. Bendigo.. This place is always a treat. The food is the main attraction, and while it isn't a full-on exquisite Thai culinary experience that takes you to the streets of Bangkok, it's pretty bloody good anyway. The service is a bit ho-hum, but nothing to complain about really, although they are quite slow to serve. Like I said, the food is excellent, never anything to complain about and reasonably priced. An unexpected gem in Bendigo :)

Consistently good. Full of flavour, well priced. Have to wait a while for meals but it is worth it. We are regulars and just take the time wait factor in to account when we order takeaway etc. Green Thai curry is great and curry puffs are always good.

What a jewel. So unexpected to find such a gorgeous Thai restaurant on this quiet street. Fantastic atmosphere and delicious authentic food from true ethnic chefs!
Would definitely be a regular :D

Great food!. The service was a little slow at first - but it got better and the food was FANTASTIC!

Compare this with Piyawat's sauce that I'm sure contained tomato ketchup and soy sauce, cabbage and iceberg under rubbery calamari. If you're looking for competition, they're really not even playing the same game. The staff at Piyawat were lovely, but nevertheless, I'd be reluctant to return.
