Review Wonder Taste - Bentleigh

Hello. imnikki
Mainly busy with takeaways and deliveries, Wonder Taste looks like your typical time-worn Asian eatery in the suburbia, but what it lacks in looks, it makes up in quality of the food. The chef definitely knows his way in the kitchen, cooking up an amazing plate of salted fish and chicken stir-fried vermicelli, and deliciously crispy and fresh prawn toast and spring rolls. Deftly executed, the stir-fried vermicelli was well-seasoned and cooked beautifully. Not overly oily, and emanating the complex flavours and charred aroma that is known as “wok hei”. Reasonably-priced, and generous portion size, dining here really does hit the spot. Seriously, don’t be fool by the looks of this place and do give them a try when you’re after tasty and well-executed Chinese food.

Very good place to have Asian foods in Oakleigh, Bentleigh area. Good and quick service. Delicious meals with reasonable cost.

December 2017 A restaurant such as this deserves a good review. The food and service were very good ..... the puddings "to die for". The only downside were the hard chairs so take a cushion! April 2018 ...Just been to this restaurant for the 4th time in 4 months and each time the food has been good, the staff friendly and service good. Seats have also been improved on, very comfortable. May 2018 Been again to this restaurant with 3 other people. Three out of the four meals were very good but I had a chicken vegetable stir fry which was absolutely tasteless unfortunately. The restaurant could improve on the atmosphere by dimming the very bright lights and they should also clear the dirty dishes off the tables more quickly. Otherwise the service is good, the staff pleasant and a good evening.

We love Wonder Taste and have home delivery from there often. We recommend the pan fried pork dumplings, crispy skin chicken and amazing fried rice. It is always quick to our door and they take the time to package the sauces separately. Keep up the delicious work!

I have now done Uber more then a handful of times from this Chinese restaurant and I live probably 10 mins away near the bay, Each and every time I receive my order it’s not only delicious but still hot and tasty. It’s the best Chinese food I’ve had, especially my favourite the l fried rice and the beef in black bean sauce with veggies along with the lemon or honey chicken! Keep up the good work guys !

Went here with friends because they raved about this place. The food here is good and reasonably priced. It seems to do more take away than dine in probably because parking is not easy (especially if the back section is full). Service is efficient. We tried three entrees and two mains - nothing spectacular but all served promptly and no complaints about taste or temperature of the food. The menu seems to lean heavily on salted dishes but there's something there for everyone (GF, Vege, Vegan etc). In short, a good old fashioned Australian asian restaurant.

This is one of the very few authentic Cantonese style restaurants remaining. The food is authentic as to what you'd find in typical Cantonese Villages, Cantonese restaurants and Cantonese homes. The prices are very reasonable. The chef and owner is Cantonese and cooks beautifully. The decor is simple, the service could do with some improvements, but the food quality, portion sizes, taste and value for money is excellent! The best thing about the menu is there are pictures, there is Chinese YUM CHA and OTHER AUTHENTIC DISHES which you can order. So if you feel like dimsims you can have those whilst your friend has say a genuine Cantonese sweet and sour pork or fried rice for example. The location is on North Road and there is plenty of parking at the back. If you are disabled or need access to the restaurant you can ask them to open the back door to enter via that way. The place is easy to miss, or dismiss but go in for the authentic food. Dont worry about the decor or look of the shop. This is where you'll get genuine food. I think they mostly are so busy with take away rather than dine in though it looks like they'd fit about 50 people. I've dined here before and the food was authentic. No short cuts or skimping on substitute ingredients. Real home style Authentic Cantonese cooking cooked properly the authentic way for a reasonable price. It's good value. You can't find much better. This is the best Cantonese food I've tried in years. Sone very delicious food to be had here.

Here we are again our third visit in six months and the standard consistently superb. Every dish has not disappointed - Char kweo Tao fantastic - the deep fried flounder fantastic - beef broccoli and Japanese sauce just yum accompanied by Thai style fried rice. How refreshing is this food, the eager to please service and generally the whole value package - I wish you this new restaurant every deserving success. Wondertaste you are well above average here. P.s. Perfect group gathering venue as well - clean fresh and welcoming.

Food was awful!! Most of it was bland and the prawns were definitely not right. We ordered the deep fried prawns in salted egg yolk and the batter was slimy and the prawns did not taste fresh. We complained and they didn't care at all. I've already thrown up since leaving the restaurant this afternoon.

food was superb and service was fantastic! Finally found a resto that we can always go back to and bring family and friends. Worth spending your money here. Recommend anyone to try this place...👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Delicious food & excellent service. The waiter advised on great alternatives when we choose dishes too similar in taste to each other. Definitely would dine there again.

Had the most amazing meal tonight at Wonder Taste, couldn't recommend it highly enough. We'll be back soon!!!!
Andrew Burt
Excellent food, atmosphere and fantastic service, all at very reasonable prices. Cannot recommend enough!
Jac Rae
Service was lovely and we really liked the fresh full flavoured food. We will be back. Highly recommend the noodle soups & dumplings.

Highly recommended. I've given their menu list to all my friends at work and few of them keeps coming back. Service is excellent. Foods are fresh and tasty. Reasonable price. And the serves is generous . Joel is the host most of the time. Our family enjoyed having their take away foods and dine it at times. It's almost our kitchen house . From Sally of Tambet St. East Bentleigh .

Tasty food, excellent service, generous serves, can not recommend more!
Hello. Imnikki
4.5

While my partner has frequented Wonder Taste numerous times, I finally got around to trying them recently and understood why he always return again and again. Visited on a Wednesday weeknight with a friend looking to catch up and have a good chat.
The place is (see other reviews) quiet on a weeknight apparently doing most its business through Uber Eats or Menulog etc.

But this was perfect for my friend and I to catch up because the lack of background noise meant we could hear each well for conversation. Staff very helpful and attentive.

We ordered Sliced Beef Szechuan Sauce, XO Seafood Fried Rice, wonder Taste Sauteed Combination. Requested extra fresh sliced chilli - provided.

All the dishes were fresh, tasty and of high standard. The BYO combined with the menu prices (we split a $60 bill) make the price-value equation fall in customers favour - especially for Bentleigh East.

I will definitely be visiting again. Recommended.

Ordered take away and dine in from this restaurant several times. I am overall impressed with the taste and quality of their food. I find it very authentic for hk/ Cantonese style food. Their xo sauce seafood fried rice was a surprise, the prawns were large, fresh and well prepared, fried rice was tasty. I ordered other fried noodles dishes ( beef rice noodles, combination fried noodles etc) and think they were very delicious as well.
I don't understand why the restaurant is often relatively quiet ... to me its a little gem in Bentleigh East.
Who Loves Good Food
There’s nothing wrong with the food here, in fact, they are decent size & quality, good value for money. I just WONDER why the huge restaurant is empty on a Saturday at lunch time? Location? They are wacking out delivery orders but no one is dining in, which makes it really unmotivating to come back again. Maybe we’ll Uber next time....
Willtravelforfood17
We ordered Ubereats on a week night. The food was delivered within 20 minutes. We ordered the sweet and sour fish with Singapore noodles and the fried rice with salt and pepper chicken ribs. The packaging was really good as the container separates the meat from the noodles/rice so the noodles/rice is not soggy. The fried rice was so flavourful and fried really well. The salt and pepper ribs were crunchy and succulent and well-seasoned. Couldn’t ask for more. The fish was a little firm and chewy but tasted good and the sauce was yummy. I was hoping for more fish though for $15.80. The noodles were fried well and with the right amount of seasoning. All in all a great meal.

What a delight it was to find this place.
Service was outstanding.
Food was delicious.
We live 25 minutes away and it was definitely worth the trip.
The decor is nothing to write home about and actually quite unusual for an Asian restaurant but if ever there was a case of ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ this was it.
Bib
Best Chinese in Bentleigh area, reasonable price too, even though the decor is unassuming. Clean tasting Cantonese style cuisine. Not sure why it’s not busier. Love the combination crispy noodle amongst others. No live seafood, more basic fare.

First time here after a recommendation. Glad I went. Salt and pepper calamari, one of the best I’ve had. Prawns good, din sims good, beef good, spice in all dishes was great. Big table in Tonight and almost full house for a small place but service was prompt and efficient. One of the best value local Chinese Asian Around. Limited bar but was amazed when one of two white wines on offer was Franklin River Chardy from Margaret River, nice little pick up. Place could do with a lick of paint and a spruce up in the Washroom.
Ilovefood
Ordered delivery over the phone, i had the mongolian beef, vegetarian fried rice and vegetarian spring rolls, every thing was very tasty, food was still hot when arrived, will definitely be ordering again!
Dine And Dash
Ordered Uber eats tonight from this place tonight. Typical Asian cuisine. I ordered the Long soup, the san chao bao and the West Lake duck. I enjoyed the soup and san chao bao but the duck was a bit over cooked
Michelle
We waited 2 hours for food. Only to receive food that was inedible. The Noodle soup tasted like dishwater, the won tons are a sloppy flavourless mess. The lemon chicken was bland, not fried correctly or fried ages ago and reheated I’m not sure.
I will never order from this outlet again.

I plan ed an order for delivery to Bentleigh. & was quoted an hour and a half. it never arrived and when we rang the restaurant we were told that they were too busy and we should cancel our order. so NEVER AGAIN
Reginald
We were quickly seated and attended to as we came in. The the staff on floor were extremely polite and accomodating. The restaurant looked very neat and clean and had a nice relaxing atmosphere. Food was a little bit on the dear side but lived up to the price being fresh, tasty and filling. Would definitely come back to try their other meals.
Hidden gem. Very good Cantonese fare which is becoming harder and harder to find in Melbourne. I gave a 5-star because it exceeds my expectations from a local Chinese restaurant. I discovered this place about a year ago and I have been back a couple of times a month since then. My favourite dish is the Crispy "Golden" chicken ribs/ pork ribs, or the spicy salt and pepper version of it. Love their special fried egg noodle and the Hokkien Fried Rice is to die for. Their Westlake shredded duck soup reminded me of the street hawker's soup in Hong Kong. I love the fact that I could order my favourite yumcha fare along with fried noodles at 9pm in the evening.

I would love to see them expand their yum cha menu a bit more though. Keep up with the great work crew! :)

Good food, good service, good environment with simple decor. bountiful seating; I come regularly and am always satisfied by the food. Would visit again and again.
Myra
I ordered dumplings for delivery and they were very pink on the inside. They weren't cooked properly! And they were pretty expensive. Over $9 for only 8 dumplings. Disappointed

Decided to give this new restaurant a shot tonight and we were not disappointed! After a long day at work, cooking was the last thing on my mind. Ordered a classic Salted fish and chicken fried rice and 3 steamed steamed dim sims...WOW! Both dished were 10/10 - perfect. In the fried rice, there was sufficient salted fish and tender chicken pieces and the fresh cut chilli I requested was HOT!
Sigrana
While the fare is adequate, DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO WAIT FOR EVER FOR YOUR FOOD! The take away and delivery orders take total precedence on customer's orders. SHAME ON YOU! CHANGE YOUR WAY OR YOU WILL CLOSE IN A SHORT WHILE.

This shop was better than I thought. I don't recommend dumplings, but wonder taste stir fried egg noodle and wonder taste sautéed combination was amazing. The noodle dish contains variety of well sliced vegetables and my kids enjoyed too. The service staff didn't speak too much but very provided well service. The entrance is dark so you might wonder if it is open but I think they open almost all afternoon. It means, you can pick up dinner directly after picking kids up from school or GESAC! It is convenient!

Great tasting food, very polite and attentive service and a lovely atmosphere. The Peking duck was moist and smokey. The beef was melt in your mouth with a lovely sauce. Thank you for a yummy meal!
Emily
Food was adequate, some things were nice others were tolerable but genuinely not good value for money at all. It was incredibly expensive for the actual meal, which was genuinely mediocre. So many better asian/ Chinese restaurants around. The only advantage is that they deliver.

I had despaired about finding a truly good Cantonese-Chinese restaurant in this part of Melbourne until I had a meal at Wonder Taste this evening. There is absolutely no Cantonese restaurant of any worth any longer in the area - not in Carnegie, Bentleigh etc. and certainly not in Chadstone Shopping Centre. The once ubiquitous suburban Cantonese restaurant has been swept away by the wave of Korean, Thai and Japanese eateries that have over-run Melbourne.
We had:
1. Char Kway Teow - the noodles were properly fried to get the essential 'wok-hei' flavour. Tasty and not too oily though slightly on the salty side.
2. Fish fillet with eggplant and tofu - very rich in flavour with thick fish fillets coated first in batter before being submerged in the generous sauce.
3. French beans fried with Belachan - tender, fresh beans only lightly fried with belachan. You can still taste the crunchy beans and that is the strength of this Wonder Taste version.
4. Deep-fried chicken ribs - coated in a very tasty light and crunchy batter that also contains an admixture of minced spring onions and garlic. Very unusual and striking batter I thought. The ribs were fleshy and juicy, not hard and dry. A very fine dish indeed.
Finally, finally, we have found the best Cantonese cooking for miles around. I had actually given up all hope of finding such a thing in the suburbs.
Trying this place out since it has got plenty of good reviews. Wide range of dishes and pretty fast service. We enjoyed the sweet sour pork , spring rolls, fried wantons, fried rice and stir fry veg with mushroom. The grilled calamari was slightly below expectation. Overall food was decent.

Came here for dinner with hubby and our 2 girls. They brought out plastic bowls and cutlery for the kids, which was helpful. Plastic cups would have been good too, although I guess we could have requested them.

We ordered lemon chicken, Mongolian beef and the pan-fried duck with Japanese sauce, with steamed rice. The chicken and beef came out promptly, but the duck was delayed, for which they apologised. The beef was good. The chicken was a little bit dry. The duck was delicious, albeit a bit fatty. The gentleman who took our payment (the manager?) was very good with our little one, making her very happy by letting her take the receipt from the mobile eftpos machine.

All-in-all a good experience, which, with a few minor tweaks could be great. I think we'll be back.
Jac Rae
We have had their home delivery a number of times (we keep returning because it is great food), but I was really impressed with their service when dining in. Highly recommended.

The name and menu have changed, the food is brilliant! We dropped in for lunch today and unfortunately for the restaurant we were the only customers, all I can say is that they are missing out! We ate from the Yum Cha menu and the food was superb. My husband I believe that the "footballs" (Chanzhou?? Dumplings) and the Rice Noodles with XO sauce were the best we've ever had. We also had duck, prawn dumplings, salt & pepper quail, shark fin dumplings and Roti with Satay Sauce. We will be back. We will tell everyone how wonderful the food was and how lovely and attentive without hovering our waiter was. Thank you for a lovely lunch.
The Dear Luncher
Well hello there, Wonder Taste. The Dear Luncher has driven past so many times, but never sampled your delicacies. The Dear Luncher is annoyed at himself for waiting so long, because you've got it going on.

The Dear Luncher and his comrade ordered what we thought was a modest amount of grub for 2 big lads and 4 kids (noodles for the kids, 2 serves of dumplings, special fried rice, mongolian beef and spring rolls) ...and we still had plenty to go around the next day. Could not fault any of the dishes and the dumplings were bloody sensational. See you again soon.

DO: The salt and pepper fried chicken, the sweet sour pork, the xo pipis and the fried ice cream.

DON'T: Be like us and get takeaway. Although highly convenient and cooked with great speed, it's nice to eat at this recently renovated restaurant.

TIP: Can purchase online via Menu Log. Parking at rear. Also there's a lunch time special.

Been here 3 times now and it is very consistently good, the staff are always lovely and remember who I am, the food is to die for!! My favourite is the beef and black bean, the meat is literally so tender and tasty! The prices may seem a little steep by trust me it's worth the money!!
Shanaka Eats
I've driven past this place a few times as I live nearby. Wasn't too keen as I thought it was just another Asian restaurant serving up the same kinda flavours. Then I heard about their sweet and sour pork dish and decided to give it a go. Ordered in via menulog and food arrive on time.
Sweet and sour pork- having grown up in Singapore I have high expectations of this dish and have always hated the mainstream dish where it's more batter than pork. This however was nothing like that. It was a large serve of mildly battered pork in sweet and sour sauce(not overpowering). We couldn't stop going back for more!- 5/5
Sliced beef with Mongolian sauce- heaps of beef and simple sliced carrots. Beef was beautifully cooked and the sauce not over done.- 4/5
Salt and pepper calamari- can't complain. Well fried, minimal batter and good spice.- 4/5

Wonder Taste you've proven me wrong! I can't wait for another opportunity to eat your sweet and sour pork!!

First time here and we had a really good experience. The food was amazing and the costumer service as well :) while you are there don't forget to try the fried ice cream! ! We will definitely come back! Thank you so much for the great lunch!

GREAT NEW FIND - EXCELLENT QUALITY

Carole and I received advertising matter from a brand-new restaurant starting up on North Road, Bentleigh East, in Melbourne. We decided to try it out - we were not disappointed in the least.

For those familiar with the area is in the same building the Korean BBQ was located in. It has, however, undergone an extensive facelift and is brand-new and sparkling. The open plan kitchen is brilliant and it is intriguing to watch the chefs at work.

The maitre d' – Jowen Lin – showed us to our table the night we both visited. Jowen knows his restaurants particularly well, having worked in several other Melbourne establishments before opening his new restaurant. The cuisine follows a southern China accent which has some spillover into Malaysians styles in some of the menu items. All very delicious, and I'm sure Alex, Jowen’s partner in the establishment, keeps it well and truly on the straight and narrow. Alex has recently arrived from China and has, done particularly well with the menu for the new restaurant. He has brought some new fresh and interesting ideas with him.

At the outset, let me tell you it was very hard to fault the quality of the food served that night. Carole and I both appreciate food that is very fresh and flavoursome, and the presentations of the meals we had certainly reflected this desire.

We both enjoyed Roast Peking Duck Supreme, as an entree, which wass served with Wonder Taste's own sauce. It is slightly different than the traditional Hoi Sin based sauces you are presented with elsewhere. The sauce, in particular, made the dish delicious. The only minor problem I saw with the duck, was it was slightly dry - but that's only a very minor criticism - the rest was wonderful.

For our main course we chose Salt-and-Pepper Calamari and Sweet and Sour Pork. Both of these presentations were extra good and delicious. The calamari was clean and not oily - just right with the appropriate amount of spices, which suited my palate down to the ground. It was excellent.

On the other hand, the Sweet and Sour Pork was equally delicious, was not oily, and the sweet-and-sour sauce that accompanied the meal was beautifully prepared, again with the appropriate balance of sweet and sour. No doubt this balance was perfectly worked out by precise combinations of the correct fresh vegetables and other condiments.

We tried a rice accompaniment for the main course and chose Thai Style Fried Rice, which was something completely different. Obviously it is rice based but is served with spices and some seafood, particularly king-size prawns included in the presentation. The presentation is not in the traditional bowl, but comes out, well, I won't spoil it for you – you will enjoy the presentation.

There are several other varieties of rice on the menu. And for that matter, the menu is diverse and carries a variety of dishes based on seafood, duck, chicken, soup, vegetables, noodle soup, beef and pork and, of course, desserts. There is something on that menu to please everyone, including, I'm sure, children.

There is an adequate selection of beer and wine on the drinks menu and Carole enjoyed a very pleasant Villa Wolf Pinot Gris.

The table service and wait staff are excellent, and we could not fault either the wait staff or their presentation of the meal.

Prices are perhaps slightly higher than what other restaurants in the area charge. However, in our opinion, the slight increase is well worth it for the quality that is presented. It would certainly not stop us from returning for further lunches and dinners. All in all, it was a delightful experience and one that we will repeat soon.

Since we visited, which was approximately a week and a half ago, we decided we try home delivery from the same restaurant. Yes, they do home delivery or pickup if you want, and the quality is as good home delivered as what it was in the restaurant.

Congratulations to Jowen and Alex on an excellent meal. Carole and I wish you both all the best with the new venture and I'm sure with the quality you are presenting, it will be very successful for you both.

We do look forward to returning and seeing you both soon.

Ordered the Salted fish and Chicken Fried rice, was pretty good. The restaurant is nice and cozy, looked very clean. Might go for a dinner one day.

such a great restaurant. probably the best sweet and sour pork I've ever had. The dumplings are a higher quality than other restaurants I've been to. good service as well.

I have been here a number of times now with my housemates and have loved every dish so far. we are working through the menu slowly, although we keep getting caught on the amazing Dumplings and every meal so far has been above standard. The man on the floor (i think his name is Alex) is very attentive and provides excellent customer service. We will definitely be coming back.

Thank you for a lovely meal!! The service was wonderful and the food fresh and delicious!! Our family have a mix of both meat eaters and vegetarians and we had plenty choice and were so accomodating! So glad to find them in our local suburb!

Odered for delivery from Wondertaste a couple of time and decided to step in for dinner this evening. It turned up surprized me with fantastic food, comfortable environment, good service, and the friendly chef. Definitely will be back soon!

Have ordered takeaway here a couple of times now and really enjoyed it, and tonight have come in for a meal.. And it was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend, the staff are very nice, the food portions are very generous and are tasty, give it a go, you won't be disappointed!

I went to Wonder Taste with my partner for my birthday yesterday as it was close by. The staff were friendly and the restaurant decor appeared modern and clean. We ordered the Chicken curry Laksa, which arrived within 10-15 minutes. The dish was a decent size, the chicken appeared good-quality and the soup was tasty. Will come back again.
Kelly
This new restaurant is great - food is fresh and tasty and the service is spot on - menu is extensive and the makeover is excellent - can't wait to try out more - a perfect local restaurant

A nice hidden place in Bentleigh East. New open restaurant and the dish is not simple as the other traditional Asian restaurant. Pan fired duck is a good choice if you want some special taste. A bit surprised could find a such place outta city. Will go back again.

It's my first time to Wonder Taste with family. Nice service and delicious food. Recommend the Xo seafood fried rice and salt and pepper calamari!

Best golden prawns and xo seafood fried rice in town!! Love the pan fried duck in Japanese BBQ sauce as well! Fantastic food!! Highly recommended!!

Real Chinese Cuisine!
We passed by the road and saw this restaurant and decided to give it a try. And it really worth it.
We ordered Japanese bbq sauce duck, fried prawns with salted egg yolk, and some Vegas. The duck was very tender and the prawns were so yummy. We also try the matcha panna cotta which was so soft and melted instantly into the mouth. So good!
Andrew Wise
Very friendly service, good atmosphere, fantastic Mongolian beef and special fried rice. Chicken Satay and Pork Springrolls were great too. Stoked that I've found a great local chinese restaurant.

Will definitely eat here again.

Nice food and service.
Chicken laksa is really tasty. Chicken breast fillets are tender and nice flavored.
Also love the fresh mixed juice.
