Went here on Saturday for lunch - food was a real treat and the service was great as well! will definitely come here again
My local! Best salmon rolls in Perth! Miso soup is to die for. Everything here is amazing. Do yourself a favour!
Fresh yummy and friendly service. PLEASE JOIN UBER EATS!
Fresh fantastic excellent service excellent value
Have Loved this place going back to when it was Fuji’s. The flavours and finesse are as perfect as in Japan. It’s perfect traditional Japanese food. I would however suggest having one member of the floor staff concentrate on the floor and the other on UBER. It can sometimes feel that the actual diners are second best. That aside it’s one of the best Japanese places in Perth. X
Love this gem in the suburbs. Food is outstanding. Everything is very fresh and very well cooked. Crispy or soft where it should be. The wait staff are very attentive. Sure everything might not come out at the same time, but when you are paying very cheap prices for very fresh and delicious food, it really doesn't matter. We have been to this restaurant three times in the last three months (now September 2019) and each time it has been fantastic. Don't listen to reviewers who complain about the fact that a waitress is holding a hot bowl of broth at the table when it was ordered.
Sunday evening, a group of friends decided to go check out this restaurant in St James. The staffs were very welcoming, and the service is excellent; also, the price is very reasonable.
We ordered for entree Fried oysters, Ika Karage, Gyu tataki, Scallop, Takoyaki, Saba Sioyaki, Tori Karage and Yasai Itame. I need to highlight a few items that weren't too good. The Ika Karage which is the deep fried squid tentacles, it was a bit too chewy, overcooked. Gyu tataki, which is the beef tataki, is a bit too dry.
For the mains dishes, We ordered the large sashimi, and it was a good serving. We also ordered the tempura combination.
We also ordered the shared dish: the sukiyaki and Yosenabe. The general concentration sukiyaki is the favourite of all as it's very flavourful and the serving is very generous. Yosenabe is a bit too blend to our preference.
We didn't get to try the dessert as we were too full.
I think the restaurant is like a home in the middle of Japan, is very homemade food like grandmothers style, the price is very good and the Bento Box was very nice. Sushi has the proper size so you can eat it in one bite.
Buen is a local family run restaurant serving up tasty authentic Japanese meal at very reasonable prices. It's great for a quick lunch grab as well as a relaxing family dine out for dinner.
A great place to go for a quiet, great value lunch. Most meals are $10 for lunch and made and served fresh. Service is excellent. A great hidden gem!
Love it so much, best price with excelent food! Friendly staff. Used to go there once every two weeks. Chirashi is the best. Bento box and califonia roll taste good as well. Tea pot only cost $1.00. Good price and good food.
More Than Nourishment
+4.5
We came here after being recommendations from a friend. It is located in the neighbourhood streets and looks run down from the outside. It wouldn't be somewhere you would just stumble upon. Decided to go for the chirashi bowl and I did not regret my choice. For $16.50, it was definitely value for money. The sashimi was fresh and came with a miso soup and potato salad. Will definitely be back!
always cheap, good, and friendly! chirashi sushi bowl is amazing value, and can't go wrong with their lunchtime meals (some are $10 with a side of miso soup and potato salad!).
One of the most authentic Japanese restaurants I've ever tried in Perth. Very affordable and fresh food. The food are of high quality despite the not so fancy decor.
Our friend is lucky to have this as her local, so we got takeaway here. It was authentic and enjoyable, with the agedashi tofu and salmon as great entrees. The miso was ho-hum but it has a lot of charm and some great choices. I would definitely visit again.
One of my favourite place to go for lunch. Authentic Japanese food for really good price. Generally almost all the choices of dish you get there for lunch are $10 inclusive of the main, miso soup, little potato salad, and green tea. The karaage there is really good. And I loved the chilli beef! The chirashi is apparently quite famous there but I haven't tried it.
Resturant was bigger than we thought when we first walked in. The inside looks a bit run down. We had a bento box and chirashi sushi for dinner. The bento box also came with miso soup. Overall the food was fresh and they came out fairly quickly. They also sell japanese mochi at the counter, however as we went quite late, they were all sold out.
Tori Karaage $8.50
Chige Nabe seafood, chicken, egg and veggies cooked with spicy hot soup in pot $14.80
Chicken Katsu curry $14.50
Tick for 3 "F" Fresh, Fast and friendly service. Recommended.
This is an 'out of the way' Japanese restaurant run by a Master Sushi chef, his wife, and son (boy, can he bust a move!). But if you are looking to leave your shoes at the door and sit crossed-legged on a tatami mat while soaking up the sounds of the Koto, this is not the place for you. The only thing Japanese about this place is the food and the owner/chefs - which is a good thing, right? The premises was for many years a low-rent Mexican restaurant, followed by a slightly higher-rent Mexican restaurant, and then an off-beat burger bar that sadly emerged a few years before the high-end hipster burger craze took off. Shame. The food may have changed over the years but not the décor. So it's BYO Kimono if you want the full experience. Ok, on to the good stuff. The menu has the usual solid, reliable dishes, though sans the fancy sushi that has emerged at other establishments. The sashimi is good; the sushi is tasty and generous of quality filling, and the various stir-fry/curry dishes are tasty and reliably good. The rice in the sushi is sweet and moist - it never tastes like it has been sitting around in a refrigerator like the shopping-centre varieties do. The staff are hard working and they need to be because this place does get super busy. So on occasion the service can be a little slow, that's when we skip the dine-in Mexican-carcass décor and order take-away which arrives a lot quicker in those busier times. Buen is what it is: you get in, eat solid reliable, consistently good Japanese grub for a fair price, and get out. Job done without the fuss of high end dining and the accompanying price. This is why we have been eating there near-weekly from when it first opened all those years ago. I just wish they served Okonomiyaki :(
One of our favourite Japanese restaurants.
Food always so consistent and delicious.
Sushi chirashi comes with such a generous portion of fishes and scallop. Ginger pork is so good too.
Good value of money, waiters are so polite and accommodating. We Will always come back again and again.
I'm a regular customer to Buen, and I am always very impressed with the freshness and authenticity of the dishes. This is true Japanese cuisine, prepared by real Japanese people at a very reasonable price, the staff are always very friendly and the service is good. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Perth.
Love it especially its California rolls, simple restaurant but delicious foods, foods prepared by Japanese and therefore it taste authentic!
Had lunch here today with a friend from work. The service was friendly, the location is a little dodgy, but my goodness the food!!! Will definitely be back here again. Can't wait to tell all my friends.
A generous served of salmon/trout, tuna, crabmeat, and scallops for Chirashi Don(16.5). Worth trying. Never fail to impress, formerly Fuji Japanese Restaurant in Victoria Park.
The sashimi rice is the best in town ! Affordable and fresh! My cousin and me always come here for lunch! Very crowded at night but lunch time is okay.
I love the foods here, the location of this restaurant is rather off putting, but the foods are delicious & fresh.
We ordered ramens, adegashi tofu, steam egg, teriyaki chicken & sashimi on rice. They are all excellent. Good portion and very affordable. Must try if you are in the area.
Loves the food here: cheap and it also taste good. Many of my friends have recommended this place and I have to agree that this place is a must to go place when you are craving for a quick and delicious meal.
Been here about 3-4 times now, and my favorite would be the Sakana Furai ($12.50 fried fish) and tonkatsu ($14 friend pork). The portion is big and they come with rice and salad too. Their Chiraishi sushi (at only $15.50) is “heaven” and a must try for every sashimi lover out there. What I like about this place is however their appetizer which are plenty to choose from. And they are all equally tempting thus making me difficult what to choose. I’ve tried their agedashi tofu, karaage, fried squid, gyoza, takoyaki, and chilli-tofu which are all good choice for appetizer.
Contrary to some of the older review here, I find the service is actually good if not beyond average! And I’m going to support my statement here with 2 actual examples: 1) The staff actually poured us the tap water. This is actually one of the very very very few restaurants where the staff actually bring you the tap water jar and glasses and actually help you pour the water into the glasses. Usually they just come and bring us the jar and the glasses (or even self-service!). 2) The staff actually bothered to go through each and every one of the ingredients in their “seafood” soup to attend to my wife request as she prefers not to eat the muscle and prawn. When the staff was unsure, she went to check with the chef too. I was really impressed with their service in fact. Definitely will come back here again, and again.
Came here recently for the first time for lunch. The venue is really spacious and clean. I ordered a katsu chicken japanese curry for $14.50. It was pretty good. The chicken was crisp and the curry had a nice flavour. There was a large serving of rice under the curry which was the sushi type of rice which was good. Would return again as the food is good and quite authentic and is reasonably priced.
Came here again and ordered bento box. It was a generous serving and came with miso soup and sauce. Worth the money.
Heard awhile back that the chef used to own Fuji Sushi station and my favourite dish was their chirashi. Popped into this "no frills" restaurant for lunch and yes, ordered the chirashi and it was just as good as I remembered. It also included a bowl of miso soup and a light starter of cold angel hair pasta in an egg, Japanese Mayo, white pepper and minced carrot mix.
Previous reviews about lack of service are a bit harsh. The dishes are ridiculously well priced, fresh and so what if the decor is a bit Spartan/basic? "It's not fancy, but it's cheap!" If you are after upmarket fine dining, there's Kiri, Sushia, Nobu, Tsunami etc.
I've since been back and had the sashimi moriawase, cold soba noodles with tempura fish and vegetables.
Yet another family favourite, the owners of this place used to run “Fuji Japanese Restaurant”at Victoria Park, and has since taken an extended break before coming back as “Buen 151” located in the suburb of St James. Having eaten their food for the past 9 or so years, it is safe to say that I do enjoy their food, but will admit that the quality of some of their dishes have unfortunately fallen too.
This is a true love story. I first came to know Buen 151 and their chirashi sushi when my sister's friend introduced us. The restaurant is large for a Japanese restaurant, but rather poorly decorated and not so welcoming. We persevered despite unshakable doubt of the quality of the food. Once I opened the menu, nothing seemed to stand out except for the chirashi sushi. This was the first time I've seen chirashi on a menu, I'm sure because of my own ignorance. I was intrigued at the idea of a bowl of sashimi on top of sushi rice, so I ordered it. I fell in love and I fell hard... with chirashi sushi. I don't usually have cravings, but I crave chirashi and I have to say, in my opinion, the best one is still at Buen 151.
Although previous reviewers had issues with both the decor and service at this restaurant, it seems they have worked to improve both recently. The decor is still fairly unusual -- brushed cement floors? But it now appears more quirky than unpleasant. I was served by two waitresses, one who gave exemplary service and the other who gave decent service, so I had no complaints there either.
I went with a friend, who ordered the chicken katsu, and I ordered the nabeyaki udon. I am very picky about my Japanese food, having spent considerable time living in Japan, and the food here fulfilled my expectations completely. The katsu was fairly standard, but better than many places, and the nabeyaki udon was absolutely delicious, some of the best Japanese food I have had outside of Japan. Prices are also reasonable, the food came quickly, and overall I have no complaints at all. I will be visiting again, probably very soon.
Food is delicious! But like other reviews, the service is dismal. You really have to wave your hands and shout at the the top of lungs to get any attention from the waiters. Might just stick with takeaway for now.
Always really tasty. Very well priced and everything always taste fresh. I never eat in the restaurant though as it doesn't look like a very inviting place to have a meal in - it has this cold and gray bare interior. However, I am more than happy to stick to my takeaways!
Decent food; reasonable rates; average ambience. Visited this restaurant after checking online reviews & a strong recommendation from a good friend.
On entering found the ambience below average to poor. Felt like one of those student catering halls.
Ambience was definitely a turn off.
Ordered Fish cakes which were pre-cooked but tasted alright 6/10
Bento Box $18.00 with 2 tempura prawns & 1 tempura fish, miso soup, rice, avocado sushi, katsu chicken , pickled ginger, etc. Tasted pretty alright.
Other mate ordered Chicken Katsu curry $14.00 - size was average, taste was average but pricing for Katsu curry $14 i believe for that turn off ambience definitely not worth it especially after eating Katsu curry at Takas kitchen for $7.80! The curry spice was the standard Japanese curry powder. Nothing exceptional.
The Japanese tea & Miso soup were a standout and tasted good.
Service: The young dude who works there seemed courteous & hard working with taking & serving orders at the same time and ensuring we were fed well. He was polite and attended to us promptly. The waitress on the other hand did not want to make any eye contact to ensure if we wanted anything else. She also lacks basic manners on customer service as we experienced that when she served the bento box & miso soup she banged it on our table and ran in to the kitchen.
Don't wish to be too harsh on scoring Buen as it seems it is a family run business. Husband-Wife cooking inside, & the kids serving customers. This is a family-friendly restaurant and I recommend people should try it.
Scores:
Food: 6/10 (no side effects post meals)
Service: 6/10 (A+ for the boy, C- for the waitress)
Ambience: 4/10
Overall: 6/10
Delicious. Friendly staff, delicious consistent food and quick service, can't ask for much more! Definitely a favourite take away spot and highly recommended.
Very nice. I'd go back for sure. 8/10.
Great tasting take away food, a really authentic Japanese experience. Great fresh sushi. We will be back.
Excellent food, Chicken Katsu Don is the best I've eaten!
Only thing is the finish is a little tacky, but price & quality of food makes up for it easily.
Buen used to be the old Fuji sushi station. Always serve the best pork ribs
Great value for money. Very tasty food and very clean restaurant. Will definitely be back!
Finally!! Fuji Sushi Station reopens! Don't know what Buen 151 stands for but it's definitely the same Fuji Sushi owners and the food quality and taste are still the same.
We ordered the sukiyaki, scallop sushi (which is not on menu), salmon sushi and chicken roll. All I can say, the familiar taste of Fuji Sushi returned as soon we popped the food into our mouth.
Although the deco is nothing fancy, I'm definitely going back again (and again) to make up for the time Fuji was closed!
Can't help to go twice since last week! even the place doesn't have much decoration but it's clean & the staff are friendly! most important thing is the foods are Fantastic!!!
I had sashimi ~ the scallop are so fresh!! it's $29 cheap for the generous portion. sushi rolls are nice too, big cube of salmon in it. also like Ramen, bento and My fav is Ika- shioyaki ( grill squid with salt) !!! yumm~~~
It is a shame that you've moved. I loved Fuji Sushi Station so much that I still miss it even though it has closed for over a year now. It is very sad that Fuji Sushi Station is now replaced by Kuza, which is known to me as a big con in Vic Park. I am still very happy to travel a bit further to you for some comfort food.
Love the food but the venue feels a lil dodgy
Quick and easy. My partner and I arrived an hour before close hoping for a quick bite. The bento box was delicious and everything nicely cooked. Perhaps one of the drawbacks was that the fried fish was a little too thin. The tuna and salmon rolls were not very well presented but they tasted very fresh. I'd recommend for a quick bite and a bottle of BYO wine, not really a place to take a first date. food 3/5, service 5/5, ambiance 2/5
Excellent food, especially the sushi and great value for money (but not in a fashionable area).
Definitely one of the best I've had, not just in Perth either. Very fresh and great value.bizarre fit out but my eyes are on the food.
Interesting. Menu looks the same as fuji, same size and font. The cooked foods chef is the same, a chap from Kagoshima. Ok, so no welcome or even acknowlegdement when you walk in, you are looked at and ignored. main waiter has his back to you. Maybe everyone thinks it not their job to greet and sear, and even just offer some tap water or hot tea. This is missing, a rude welcome is not appreciated. If your place lacks in the looks make up for it in a great welcome and smile. Yes I know you are all busy, but I nearly walked out straight away at the lack of the opener. Sigh. Plastic tableclothes or laminex and plastic chairs scream cheap and zero atmosphere. Tip two, when you tale the order bring the tea straight up. Us thirsty people need something. When you bring it with the meal it is too late. Apart from this the food was of a great price, very delicious gyoza and ramen in a great stock, yum. So somethings good, somethings bad. Not flash, many families and students and nearly full. Could be great.
Okay, so don't get put off by appearances (or the neighborhood), the food is good and good value too. Pretty much the same menu as back in the Fuji days, but with the addition of Ramen. Great addition to the area.
What's in a name...? Fuji refashioned. So we were locals, the kind that had a sauce-stained menu in our top drawer, for "those days" when cooking just wasn't an option. Fuji has always been good for authentic Japanese food at really, really reasonable prices. Fresh, tasty and consistent, the meals are great for everyday eating or dinners out with friends.
Since its closure late last year we've suffered major Fuji withdrawals, so when we heard Buen 151 is the new Fuji if you will, we were more than a little excited (and confused, as the name doesn't quite have the same appeal as Fuji....!).
The teriyaki beef makes any problem go away. And no, this is not an exaggeration, this is practically clinically proven. The sashimi is fresh, and maybe a little too thick, but who really cares when you have high quality kingfish in your mouth, right? The udon is that perfect combination of complex flavours with a heartiness that keeps you feeling warm and full all night. The best part: the prices for these dishes range from just $12.50 - $15.50.
While it lacks the intimacy of the Japanese sushi bar we all loved (Fuji Station), Buen 151 is the same lovely people, incredible food and BYO option as well as offering some great new perks - like better opening hours (they do lunches on the weekends now!) and really big tables perfect for groups.
Omg, the chirashi sushi (mixed sashimi on sushi rice) was so good!
Finally my long awaited Fuji is revived as Buen 151. It is now located in a bigger premise but simpler and plain. Nevertheless nothing can stop me from going back for their quality and tastiness of the authentic jap foods. Their sushi is totally unbeatable with the sticky Japanese rice. Agedashi tofu is a winner... Fresh yet not oily with shaved radish & ginger on top. The una don is another highlight with perfect amount of sauce on top of the warm rice. Buen 151 is very recommended if you are looking for good classic japnese meal to satisfy ur Jap food fetish!! I can see myself becoming the regular here! :-)
This is the same chef and some staff from the closed Sushi Station Fuji. Menu is very similar. We had the takeaway Bento boxes which were good. We will try sitting in next time, but don't expect the quant atmosphere from Fuji days... It is roomy but spartan.
written by bakeyousmile My colleague is Japanese and when she discovered that I’m the biggesst Japanese foodie she took on the opportunity to try out some Japanese places around our office with me. So glad we found this place. Its literally a hidden gem tucked away in the suburb of St James. There are only 2 restaurants on this street – Buen 151 and Wang’s Asian Cuisine. The parking area is really strange as its part of another shop’s pavement. Buen 151 has a very casual but homely feel to it. You can tell its authentic Japanese from the moment you walk in. It is actually really rare to find a truly authentic Japanese owned and runned restaurant in Perth. Many of them are operated by Chinese, Korean, Malaysians, etc. Someone told me that the owners are the same owners of Mr Fuji which used to be towards the causeway end of Victoria Park. It has been closed for serveral years now. I’ve never tried it but I’ve heard amazing things about that place. What we ordered: Chirashi don ($16.50) – Fresh sashimi on sushi rice. Hands down the most generous serving and freshest sashimi in Perth Gyu tataki ($10.5) – Thinly sliced lightly cooked beef Ika shioyaki ($9.30) – Salted BBQ squid tenticles Chawan mushi ($8.90) – Steamed egg custard Chige nabe ($14.80) – Seafood, chicken, egg, and vegetable cooked with spicy hot soup in pot Gyu tataki Ika shioyaki Chawan mushi Chige nabe Rating: 8/10 If my rating was purely based on their sashimi – 10/10! But unfortunately their cooked dishes aren’t as good as other places. Filed under: Dining out , Favourite , Restaurants Tagged with:
Hidden Gem for non pretentious Japanese cuisine.
Tucked along an unassuming shopfront along Chapman road in Bentley, you can easily mistaken the restaurant entry as just another local eatery. However, the cuisine is still as authentic as when they were known as Fuji Station in Victoria Park before their move here as Buen.
A tip is to reserve for dinner as the place gets busy and full quickly, especially on the weekend.
We ordered the sashimi and also the yosenabe chicken hotpot for the two of us with a toddler, and we left completely satisfied.
We like their collections of kids books to keep kids occupied during meal time.
The two young waitresses were trying their best to serve the full house, but were a bit flustered under the pressure from the kitchen and the customers. We look forward to reviewing again at our next visit so we can update the rating if the service improves.
Overall an enjoyable authentic Japanese dinner.
Really tasty Japanese foods with great prices!
Make sure you have booked the table before you go there if during dinner time, otherwise might need to wait for long time!
I have to say, the most authentic, delicious and reasonable Japanese cuisine you can find in Perth!
Been a big fan of theirs for more than a decade now and still can’t stop going there!
Very tasty food with affordable price and great service 😇
Ducked in to get sushi from here the other day, it was fresh really tasty. Will be back to try some more items on the menu.
Excellent service, good quality food. Very authentic Japanese.
