After waiting over two weeks for my partner to be in a curry mood, it finally came one Saturday! Pulling out my bookmarks, I told him to pick a place and The Saffron House it was. A quick call to make a reservation and we were on our way.
Reception was warm upon arrival and not long after settling into our seats, our drinks order was taken. When my partner’s beer arrived, I was advised that my Rose Lassi would take longer as it was made to order. Sure I was happy to wait for a fresh glass of lassi and despite the barely detectable rose flavour, it didn’t disappoint.
As we snacked on the complimentary pappadums and dips provided, the venue got busier by the minute, assuring us that we picked the right place considering the distance we’d travelled.
Whenever I think Seekh Kebabs, tender, moist meat with bursts of spices and aromatics come to mind; all of which unfortunately fell short in the ones we had here.
Towards the other end of the spectrum were our trio of curries so splendidly executed! With some beautiful cohesion of spices and heat, they were simply luscious and robust from start to finish! Never a moment did our Mixed Vegetables, Goat Meat Rahra or Pepper Chicken detract any flavours from each other, instead forming a bond so well knitted.
Be it with some Saffron Rice or Naan, they didn’t fail us one bit and the naan was the fluffiest we’ve ever come across!
All night long, service was attentive and courteous. When asked how our meals were, I reckon our beaming and content faces said it all.
The place is simple and welcoming to dine at. We went for dinner as a group of 7. The service is quick and the food is delicious. We ordered onion bhaji for starters which was amazing. Paner kadhai, dal makhni and aloo gobhi with butter naans was served in good quantities. Even though the gobhi wasn’t cooked properly, the rest of the dishes were satisfying. Overall a good place to have a date night or dine out. I have also tried the pepper chicken, madras chicken and chicken biryani here which is highly recommended.
Uber Ate from Saffron House tonight after a LONG working day. We’ve done the take away thing once before and we’re impressed by the quality. Tonight we had our regular butter chicken order, this time with a 1/2 tandoor chicken, samosas and rice. I enjoyed the vegetables samosa which was quite mild and the tandoori chicken was nice and tender. Loved the flavour of the butter chicken but they could have been a little more generous on the actual chicken quantity. Overall a tasty meal for this tired office worker.
Love it. The smell of spices when you walk in the door is a sign of the deliciousness to come. Such goodness. Staff very friendly. Mouth watering.
Such high quality food - I've never been disappointed with anything on the menu. Onion Bhaji and Chicken Tikka Masala are top dishes. The restaurant has a lovely ambiance and staff are very professional and friendly.
We had a lovely experience at The Saffron House. The overall atmosphere and feel of the place was warm and relaxing. Staff were very friendly and made you feel at home. Food was reasonably priced, well flavored but not overly heavy in salt and grease. They also do free home delivery. Overall we had a wonderful meal and we definitely plan to be back.
I have been back several times and ordered something new each time. Always pleasantly surprised at the quality and service. Couldn't recommend more highly.
This is the best Indian restaurant in Melbourne (that I've so far tried). Excellent food, great service. Unbeatable combination. Yellow lentil dahl is a must try.
Great little Indian place. The ambiance is good, staff seems friendly but they were quite busy on the Friday night that I went there so service was a bit slow.
You can see the chef making fresh roti from the glass window which is cool, wish i could do that ;). We were small group of people so tried a few curries and they were all good. Paneer one especially was tasty. I also liked the taste and texture of their Naan bread and rotis, they defo feel freshly made.
Its a bit of a way away for me but if I am ever that side of town and wanting to eat indian will go there again.
I love a honest to goodness authentic Indian feast. The spices and flavours co-mingling in harmony, something I can never quite achieve the nuance of when I'm recreating curry at home. As sublime as Indian cuisine smells and as much as my taste buds are awakened, Indian food in a takeaway container does not photograph well. They invariably look like identical slops in bucket but trust me, dear reader, they tasted waaaay better than they appeared.

I liked it so much, I brought the family a couple of days later! We had many of the same delicious dishes (so they could try them too) but we also had the Lamb Madras, I would also recommend this dish, as it was delicious as well.
After the kids had gone up to the window to see how clever the tandoor chef is at his craft he sent over a serve of the Kashmiri Naan. It may have been for the children, but I had a taste - and it's a bit of a flavour bomb! It's a lovely sweetly flavoured bread with dried fruit and citrus. Really special. We had also ordered the plain naan, cheese naan and masala kulcha - as they were last time, fluffy, perfect breads all.
Service was friendly and helpful - staff are great at noticing when the water jug is empty. I think this restaurant has managed to restore my enjoyment of Indian food which had lapsed of late.
*Our kids did want to try some different lassi, such as the plain, salted or rose water, but only mango was available that night - they thoroughly enjoyed that one, but hopefully in future the other options will be available.

One wet, cold Friday night , 6 friends and I met for dinner at The Saffron House to talk books, kids and future plans. In this 80s reminiscent and welcoming restaurant, we felt immediately relaxed. There was a friendly buzz in the air, with most tables filled. Papadums and quality mint and tamarind chutneys were placed on our table to enjoy as we perused the menu.
We decided against the well-priced banquet options to go our own way. The delicious vegatable pakoras, also served with mint chutney were a fabulous start. Not oily, and chockas with vegetables, they were one of the best versions I've tried.
With each of us choosing one main, we were able to sample quite a selection, all served in small, solid kadai. My favourite, the palak paneer, was a lovely version, I was very happy with it. Navratan korma, a mixed vegetable dish in a cashew sauce was lovely and would surely keep even a committed carnivore happy. Beef korma, chicken makhani and lamb rogan josh were all good, though, the beef was a little dry, the flavour was still pleasing. Only the kabuli channa masala didn't excite me, but, others enjoyed it, so just personal taste I'd say. I missed tasting the seventh dish, but it was polished off, so must have been good!
We had some lovely, separate saffron rice, beautiful and fluffy, and equally fluffy and light garlic naan. We didn't finish it all, there was plenty of food - those little dishes are deceiving with their ability to hold more than it seems I think.
Service was friendly and patient (as larger groups often seem to have trouble getting an order done), and food came in a fair amount of time. We did not ask, and nor were we offered any 'heat' preference (and no-one went with vindaloo) so all of it was mild from a chili perspective.
We were not offered dessert, tea or coffee.
Prices are reasonable, and tables are well-spaced, the seating is quite comfortable. A place I would return to with the family.
Dining here is a lovely experience. The place smells nice, the music is appropriate and the lighting creates a nice mood.
But most of all, the food is delicious! Favourites of mine include the garlic naan and the chicken tikka masala.
The service is professional and usually prompt.
I especially recommend this place in winter - it has a very warm feeling.
I had been to this restaurant few years back when it was a part of knox based restaurant chain. That experience was disappointing. Recent visit has changed my impression. Menu is pretty good and bit different than other indian restaurants but dishes seem far too over priced. Pepper Chicken Methi Chicken are very good. Dal Makhani was bit poor...not like traditional dal makhani of bukhara.
Good food and great ambience!! You also get a 10% discount on takeaway . A little bit on the pricey side but worth it for once in a while !!
Good food great ambience and sensational service that how i can simply summarise my experience. Overall a good place to try indian food sply Kofta and Paneer delicacies
A great local indian restaurant, saves us the trip to Camberwell every time we feel like a curry.
Onion bhajis were the best I've tasted for a long time. Goan fish and beef korma were delicious.
Great food and service, we will definitely return.
We are a family of 3 living local and we are very spoilt to have the best indian restaurant at our door step the food is so delicious, the staff are so nice, and service is number 1
Everytime we think of venturing out to try different restaurant's we seem to end up back to saffron house
Thank you saffron house and keep up your good work
Fab, Kim and Olivia
Best Indian food in Indian style after long time
Loved it 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Service is awesome
Chicken is very juicy and delicious
Nice food and staff . Clean and tidy . Delivery time is reasonable too . The only thing is they ask you if you want your food spicy or mild but finally they make it spicy anyway.
The Saffron House is the only restaurant that I have ever ordered from on a regular basis. Since moving into the area, my partner and I have eaten from The Saffron House hundreds of times, on average about once a fortnight. It is amazing food, and is very consistent. They remembered my name by the third time I called, and are always top-notch in their service. The first time we ate there I had the Paneer Makhani (butter sauce), which has always been my favourite Indian dish. To this day, I have never had a better Makhani curry. And I've tried a lot of them. Our other favourites include the Goan Fish, Malai Kofta, Paneer Butter Masala and Navratan Korma. For entrees I recommend the Onion Bhaji or the Vegetable Pakora - I'm yet to find a better equivalent of either at another Indian place. Honestly, their breads are the only average thing we've found on the menu. I should add that, as a vegetarian, they've always been willing to make me meat-free versions of any of their meat curries, and happily make me Shahi Paneer, which isn't even on the menu.
What a find. It was serendipitous finding this little gem hidden away. We've eaten a lot of butter chicken in our time and this one is by far the best in Melbourne. The samosas are delicious and the bahji was amazing. The service was exemplary - highly recommended!
Pappadums to start And dare I say it, but we might have a contender to rival the cafe! The Saffron House was pretty quiet on the Friday night we visited, with just a few tables dining, but my goodness do they do a roaring takeaway trade – a sign of local favour. Did I mention delivery is free too? Service was lovely – friendly but not intrusive. The interior of the place is very classy albeit with a TV on the wall playing Bollywood movies – but why not after all? As fellow blogger Kenny from Consider The Sauce points out in his reviews of western suburbs establishments, that is ce
We keep coming back!. Saffron House in Blackburn is a great local Indian restaurant. Friendly polite service, great food at a reasonable price. As other's have mentioned in reviews the naan bread is great. You can adjust the 'heat level' up or down the dishes with a quick chat to the waiters.
Excellent value and great service. Extensive menu, great service and very enjoyable meal. My favourites were the vegetarian biryani and the mint paratha. The restaurant is spacious so a great choice for privacy or large group. The heat level was quite low in the curries we ordered, but that was probably just the curries that we ordered. (Rogan Josh, Palak Paneer). Excellent value and we dined (without drinks) for under $20/head
Pretty Good. With Indian there is always lots of competition around, and this place is better than most, but won't necessarily blow you away.
Overall is is great value, and has a larger than typical selection of dishes. Lots of good vegetarian choices too.
The table service was polite and attentive. The kitchen was a little slow getting out our mains, but I suspect there was a fair bit of cooking involved. (not prepared mush).
So this place is a good choice for an Indian night out.
Just fantastic. I was so impressed with this restaurant. The naan bread was freshly made for us and the curries were just incredible. I ordered a butter chicken because I didn't feel like being adventurous that night and I was blown away by the quality and flavour of it - certainly nothing like the butter chicken I was used to having! Lamb korma was excellent too. 10/10
The best Indian food in the suburbs. Great service & the knowledgable staff are happy to tweak menu items to suit all tastes! A real winner.
AMAZING FLAVOURS. Really loved our dining experience here. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food was sensational. Some of the best Indian I've had and I've been a religious Indian eater for over 15 years. Only complaint would be that the Chicken Tikka that they use in the butter chicken etc was dry and a bit tough. Apart from that I am so excited to have this place just down the road!
Excellent Beef Korma and Naan Bread at reasonable prices. Friendly staff and fast service. I will be back. !.
Highly recommended, it was good experienced. I loved the chicken shahi korma and their coconut rice. We had warmed welcomed by their staff, good service. They have a big glass where we can see the chef making the breads. Guys should try the food
Never had a bad meal here. We love this place - have often dined here over a number of years. Consistent quality, not too expensive and friendly staff. Recommended.
Absolutely love this restaurant. Beautiful food guaranteed every time.
One of, if not the best indian in melbourne so far!. I'm from england and even people from middle eastern countries say indian food is best in england, so this place had done extremely well to impress me and friends/family of mine. The one thing i really appreciate about true indian restaurants is when they have a Tandoor (stone/clay oven) which Saffron House has. strongly reccomend the Daal Makhani and chicken tikka for starters. Also i love their mint sauce. mmm we go there at least once if not more every week!
Another great find..... Love this place. We have dined in at times and we have found the service to be friendly and prompt. But we do love this place for take away. Always delicious. Kasmiri Nan by far our favourite along with all the curries. Generous serves and good value.
I will be back for the Palak. A last minute decision to nick out with a friend (leaving the kids at home with Dad!) and have dinner locally was a good one. As a vegetarian, my friend is always limited by meaty menus (I love), so I chose this restaurant based on urban spoon reviews (thanks all). It was great with an expansive menu and a substantial range of veg only options. Entree field mushrooms and meat samosas (me). Samosas are a test, if you get the pastry and flavours right you've got me. Mains I had the chefs speciality Lamb Balti which melted in the mouth and had just the right balance of rich aromatic flavours. My herbivore friend had Palak Paneer, which was creamy and flavoursome. Garlic Naan and mango chutney saffron rice as extra. Total bill $71.00. The service was really chatty and welcoming. Great venue for a 1st date or a family meal and easy parking. Very good; service, price and meal quality.
Great food, lovely light naan, friendly. Very happy.
Extremely friendly staff, prompt service, excellent variety of dishes, especially rare because I am a vegetarian. The only downside is that my husband loves extra chilli, and the dish that was recommended by the waiter wasn't chilli enough for him do he had to ask for extra fresh chilli to add to it. Nevertheless, we will definitely be back.
Excellent Experience. We were recommended The Saffron House by friends at work, and are so glad we took the opportunity to experience their food. The food is so rich and creamy and has the right level of spice. We ordered through home delivery and was very happy with the prompt service. There was no delivery charge and we waited 20 mins from the moment I placed the order to the time it arrived at our door step. Thank you Saffron House for a excellent experience and friendly staff. We will definately be ordering again!
A local venue worth visiting. I shared a banquet ($29.50) with six others. Each dish offered a small sampling of rich flavours and textures, vegies and tenderised meat dishes. Delightfully satiated at the end of our dining experience. The restaurant was largely full on a Tuesday night - a good sign of satisfied diners. This was my second visit: the first was a pleasing dinner for two and hence my return.
An unpretentious venue that represents what's good in local dining delivered by those who care about the quality of their service and your experience within the ambit of their hospitality.
Great Indian food. I've eaten in maybe a handful of times, but have also gotten takeaway from here many more times on top of that. The food is consistently good, well flavoured. The naan is some of the best I've managed to find from several Indian restaurants. Unfortunately it's a quiet place which doesn't give it justice, but therefore you always get good friendly/quick service. Portions are good sizes and prices are satisfactory. Will be back again for the chicken tikka masala.
Good Indian food with Consistency! Nan is very tasty!
Come to Saffron House for a good feed! Great Indian food at affordable prices! Will be coming back.
One of the best Indian restaurants in Melbourne with consistent quality food. Have been there 15+ times. Good ambience, service with a smile. Nans are great and especially love methi chicken, lamb saag and navrattan korma. Must try!
"Indian fine dining at its best". One of the best Indian places in Melbourne
Had a great time!! Service was excellent food was very tasty and fresh.
…. Highly recommend!!
Amazing taste and a delightful service with a smile.
Ample parking space that is shared with the shops and restaurants around this restaurant but the faculty is good for busy evenings.
There is a lot of seating space at the restaurant as well. Although we had take away, the service was really good, with a smile, a friendly chat and overall good vibes.
The seekh kebab was perfectly spiced and cooked. The chicken was a bit dry but was tasty.
The chicken malabar dish was good the highlight of our meal. Perfectly cooked chicken pieces in a delicious coconut based gravy. The chicken pieces were generous as well. The biryani and the raita were amazing as well. Took me back to a restaurant in norther part of India.
Overall, a very pleasant experience. Will be returning for more.
Finished my first 5 day week in a new job and was truely exhausted so take away was always going to be the option for our Friday nights dinner. Been two years since we last took away from Saffron House and only two things changed. We ordered Nanas instead of rice and we ordered via a Deliveroo instead of Uber Eats. Other than that delicious butter chicken, and samosa with a comfortable level of spice. The clay oven chicken tikka was super delicious too. We’ve made the effort to try many of the others around us but Saffron House is one of the more enjoyable we’ve had.

Have enjoyed their food take away a number of times now. Always delicious, and great service.
Some of the best, if not the best Indian you will get this side of Melbourne. I have been going to Saffron House for over 10 years and they still know how to make a fantastic dish. Fairly priced & big portion sizes too!
This is a staple weekly dinner for our family. Perfect, delicious, spectacular food every single time. The customer service is phenomenal and the team that run the restaurant care about our needs and know our orders. More than highly recommend!
Consistently good quality traditional Indian food. I've been regular customer for over 4 years now. Great customer service, excellent food.
