Review Poppies On Canterbury - Blackburn

Went to Poppies with the family to celebrate my 30th. What a great find! There was so much variety on the menu, the food was delicious and portion sizes were perfect. The service was great too. Tablecloths were also a nice touch making eating there a little more special. Hope to make this a regular for future family dinners.

This is the best restaurant in the area. The food is great and so must be the chef. The service is great too. You must book ahead because its a very popular place. Went there again last Saturday 5/3/22 and it was chockers and the place was buzzing. FIVE STARS.

Been living in Melbourne for 6 years, rate this as the best place I have eaten dinner at since I arrived. Compliments to the chef and the service.

Poppies is consistently excellent! Food is magnificent, service is always attentive, environment is pleasant and relaxed and it’s BYO as well as licensed. My favourite dish is undoubtedly the chocolate soufflé. I don’t always have dessert but it’s mandatory here! So happy to have this gem close to home! Other must haves are the salmon roesti entree and the kangaroo main when they are on the menu.

4 of us for dinner. Lovely welcoming service. Soft yummy garlic bread, 2 had pollo chicken, 1 the steak pie 1 the fettuccini marinara. All with nice vegetables. Very tasty good size portions and moderate price. Lovely night out in a small intimate restuarant with good acoustics. Highly recommended.

The staff are beyond hospitable. Amazing menu with high quality food, cooked to perfection. The drinks are amazing with a good selection of wines, and a lovely ambiance in the restaurant. Cannot recommend highly enough and will be back.

Early dinner on New Year's Eve for group of ten friends. Eager staff. Tantalising and tempting menu and wide variety to choose from. Meals arrived for entire group all around the same time, hot and SO enjoyable. Water and glasses provided as soon as we were seated. This restaurant has already become a favourite amongst the group.

Attentive service; generous 2 course luncheon plus wine deal for lunch ($28); calamari rings cooked to perfection and delish chicken crepes! Recommend to you, glad we found this lovely local (have been driving past for years!)

If I could give this place 2.5, I would. I found the food adequate but bland. Overpriced, too. It’s the sort of place you could take your grandparents to and they wouldn’t be offended nor overjoyed. Pleasant enough ambience (the chandelier ship is tacky but in a fun way!), but really they could do more with the food for the price. It’s a shame, as it’s walking distance from us, and Blackburn has a dearth of great restaurants.

This was a disappointing night. The food was bland and smothered in a tasteless sauce. All the meals (there were 4 of us)  had the same sides also smothered in a white tasteless sauce. The ambience of the place was 1960s retirement village and the service was slow and impersonal. When you read the reviews for this place be careful, be very careful because people have not told the whole story...I was totally underwhelmed.....I really should give it 1 star!!!

Nice food very nicely presented and served. Some people just have to complain regardless which is not our experience here. We were so impressed we are booking a function here.

Very quiet for a Saturday night.<br/>Food was ok. Tasted like home cooked meals. Staff understood gluten free requirements. Agree price quite high for what you get.

Our group was two local couples. Both couples had separately been to Poppies and had good experiences. We were looking forward to meeting up and sharing a great meal. Perhaps between our last visit and this latest one, the management had changed. Whatever, our meal was very disappointing. If you are looking to have lovely, succulent, tender calamari, then totally forget their offering of ultra thin, batter laden, tasteless tubes of thawed, deep frozen "calamari" , dumped onto a pile of tired mixed lettuce, that I have bought at our local supermarket. Three of our group endured this. Luke warm!  Three of our group had veal dishes which were deemed acceptable but were luke warm. My fillet mignon was offered with potatoes and vegetables. I asked if it was possible to have it with chips & salad and was told "yes". I asked for medium rare. It arrived "medium rare" but was very dry, slightly tough, and the potatoes remained instead of the promised chips, and the salad was their standard small bowl of tired lettuce with a couple of pieces of tomato thrown in - the same fare as in other of their dishes. (The same dish at home the following night, was 10 times better). Perhaps we should refer them to our butcher. It was luke  warm. How hard is it to serve hot food?  The two desserts ordered were unspectacular. Tinned peaches dumped onto a crepe is not rocket science. The shared cheese platter consisted of a couple of pieces of dried fruit with some slices of cheddar cheese and camembert, together with some waterbread biscuits - all readily available cheaply from the local supermarket.    One of our group visited the toilets and emerged totally unimpressed with what they found. The rest of us judiciously decided to wait until home when we entered safe waters.    A totally underwhelming experience. We will not be returning any time soon.

Very overpriced for dated, poor quality meals. Excellent service & nice quiet atmosphere but the prices do not much the basic packet food they are serving! I don't even know what cuisine they are trying to specialise in and certainly don't go if your vegetarian.

Lovely meals. Very friendly staff who looked after us very well. Eaten here a couple of times and won't be the last visit. Well worth looking at the desert menu, as you may well see.

Needs to come into 21st century. Had family dinner here so that all travelled about same. Never again would rather travel further out or into city. This very lacklustre dinner goes down on the list to never return. Meals where priced like a fine dining but we were served comparable to poor 80's pub food. In this day and age serving boiled rice with toppings and calling it risotto, retrying a Rossi until it nearly shoots off the plate when you attempt to cut it or covering every dish in a thick floury glug and calling it a sauce is a disgrace. Requests of no sauces or no potatoes were ignored and shrugged off by waitress. What is wrong with these long running restaurants that the only changes they make over the years are to have hefty price rises with no thought to food quality, presentation, and the dining wants in 2015. Shame that the eastern suburbs seems to have a list of like establishments.

Read a review which was particularly hard on this establishment. But, I had the belly pork and my wife had the duck. We were very happy with our meals. Service was spot on.. Would definitely eat here again.

Pleasant meal. A group of 4 of us ate at poppies on Canterbury, a very quiet but well appointed venue with good service throughout the meal. Tasty mains which were quickly delivered, with a large selection of specials. Desserts were nice.

Just lovely!. I've eaten at Poppies for a few years for special occasions and the food is always reliable and well presented and the hot souffles for dessert are to die for! A very special place.
