It was a bit of a drive to get to this place but I really enjoyed my haloumi burger, the sweet potato fries were also excellent. A nice little place, looks like it's well-loved by locals. It caters for pets too. There are free dog treats, water tap with water bowl. All these little touches add charm to the place. =D

Went on a Saturday for lunch with my grandparents. Had the all day bacon eggs which were superb. Eggs were perfect and bacon was crispy and delicious. Staff were friendly and attentive. Thoroughly enjoyable experience, will come again and soon.

We used to ride our bikes to Joan's pantry to buy mixed lollies. Now it is a lot bigger and the food choices more varied. Had a sensational breakfast there yesterday. I loved the breakfast fritter with pumpkin. Coffee was great. Recommending to family and friends.

My partner found this gem from doing some plumbing work there and after watching all the delicious food coming out we had to try it! We came at midday on a Saturday and got the big brekky and veg out, nice big coffees and the best homemade lemonade I've ever had! So refreshing! The scenery outside in the sunshine under the trees was so lovely. We loved the homegrown quality, taste of the food and quick service - will definitely be back!

I used to come to the old store as a kid and was blown away by how it looks now. We were very happy with the service and the coffee and food were excellent especially the Choc Honeycomb Pancakes.

Delicious, high quality food in a leafy suburban setting. Lovely place to walk to & get breakfast. Their granola is high quality, lots of nuts and vanilla bean yogurt. Yum!

Great little place. Friendly service and very fast with bringing out meals. Menu is fantastic. Children’s menu has plenty to choose from at great prices. Only issue is the parking as it’s next to a oval and playground and there aren’t many car parks available.

Went there Friday evening. Very close to my home and usually stupidly busy so rarely go. Was undoubtably the best gnocchi I have ever had. Service was awesome and fabulous to be able to order a Sapporo beer. Highly recommend

I have been going to this iconic cafe for more years than I care to disclose. whilst I entered the new cafe with trepidation I left with a smile on my face. From the moment I entered as was greeted by owner Lisa Down and sat in the beautiful window seating. I was quickly offered a drink. I had a delicious coffee and decided on a chicken caeser salad. The chicken was moist, the salad fresh and topped off with mouthwatering anchovies.
Overall a very satisfying visit to a south Australian iconic establishment. Well done Lisa. I will definitely be back.

Next time you are in the Blackwood, Belair or Mitcham townships, then check out Hawthorndene where you will find opposite a parkland setting, with ample car parking, "Joan's Pantry". I have passed "Joan's Pantry" on a number of occasions travelling from Stirling to Flinders Hospital on the Upper Sturt Rd, but always in a hurry. After stopping for a coffee and a cake, realised I should have stopped here a long time ago. Not only is the location good for picnics, dog walking, children's play ground or just relaxing. We found the "Pantry" is a large modern purpose built restaurant, having good facilities, a great kitchen, with an excellent breakfast lunch or take away menu, all at competitive prices. What with a good choice of seating options, indoor and out door, free WiFi, News Paper. We enjoyed their special roast, very well made coffee, with a cake from the display case. We found the service excellent, warm and friendly. Our only disappointment is we should have called in a long time ago, now "Joan's Pantry" will be a regular stop when ever in this area in the future.

Absolutely my favorite place for breakfast in the hills. They make the best eggs Benedict & coffee is excellent too. And they are very dog friendly which is awesome for us.

UPDATE April 2016

Oh No! My favorite (and previously 5-Star) hills breakfast & coffee sanctuary has done the unthinkable. They have taken a guaranteed formula that worked so so well, and.... released a "new menu". Those creamy eggs Benedict that you'd spend all week lusting after... willing Saturday morning to come sooner for? Gone. Instead, I am told, it's possible to "build your own" Eggs Benedict using a list of ingredients on this new menu.
What?
So I list off my beloved poached eggs, ham, hollandaise, with hash browns... etc. Maybe it will all be ok, I tell myself.
How wrong I was.
A plate with all the ingredients laid out separately arrives. My puzzled look must have said it all. The waitress dashes off assuring me it's "meant to come with toast", and returns with a strange sour-doughy-like home made 'toast'. I commit to trying this with an open mind, but am left dissatisfied & oh so disappointed. And those hash browns? Two inexplicable bricks of sweet potato that were utterly inedible.
Now cast adrift from my favorite place.... (ever) I am hoping beyond hope I can find somewhere as good as Joan's used to be.

Joan, you're back!

After breaking my heart more than a year ago, Joan has lured me back. She restored her tried and true breakfast standards... what a relief! But then the old girl went further! Delightful events like a Funky Friday night dinner with Mollydooker wines to match? You're kidding! What a fabulous little gem we have in the heart of Hawthorndene. Thanks for being true yourself and restoring my faith in what I knew you were always capable of.
Anyone looking for something special - from a yummy breakfast, gorgeous lunch and now special Friday dinners- do yourself a favour and visit Joan's Pantry... a truly special place!

Joan's Pantry was, up until earlier this year, a quirky little place that served the local community coffee, cakes, light meals, teas and scones and so on for years. The photos on this page (thanks to whoever took them) show the place as it was: a charming, slightly shabby, very Adelaide Hills sort of place.

We went there yesterday for an afternoon break and very nice it was. Good coffee, F C Grubbs drinks in the fridge, nice food, good menu. (Breakfast, All day brunch and lunches, which seems to cover all the bases)

Service was helpful and friendly and the new extension... well, rebuild I guess... looks a treat; pretty much doubling the available seating inside, adding a deck for outside seating and preserving the old outdoor area.

My only concern.... there used to be nowhere else quite like Joan's Pantry and now, after the rebuild, it seems a bit like everywhere else.

As a local Hawthordene-an I've been coming here for years. It was always a favourite excuse to walk down or ride my bike with my sister down to get an icecream on a sunny day.
The little green stone building was demolished. The new Joan's pantry is wonderful.
Food range and prices are the same. The lovely melting moments are still there, and as tasty as ever! The expansion and revamping mimics the original architecture, so it feels like not too much is lost and the atmosphere is great. Local paintings and photos on the wall, airy windows and a sense of space is great inside, with cheery yet not garish colours.
Outside, the leafy green trees with wooden tables and umbrellas are as pretty as ever. The community garden is thriving!

They have done a great job with the expansion. The only possible thing is service- girls, I know it IS busy on a sunny Saturday morning, but you're all gorgeous so please remember to smile.
Looking forward to many more visits!

First time lunching here with my boyfriend - and we both really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The quinoa salad with smoked salmon was fresh, crunchy and full of flavor. Nice place outside of the city

I love coming here. The food is always D.LICIOUS, generous portions and great value for money. The coffee is fantastic. There's a great range of teas available too if that's what you're into. The staff are friendly and make you feel like a regular (even before I was).
Whatever the weather, a lovely place for coffee and cake, brekkie or lunch; soaking up the surroundings! 4 1/2⭐️

Really enjoyed our breakfast but the only problem was the knives aren’t good enough to cut through the rye. This is the second time it’s happened! Perhaps you should think about changing your cutlery. Other than that the food was delightful 😍

Fabulous cafe with plenty of gluten and dairy free options on the menu. Outdoor seating option is situated far enough from the road that you can't hear the traffic and there is a small veggie garden around the back that is open for visitors to walk through. Thoroughly enjoyed visiting this place and will be back very soon!

I seriously can’t fault this place. The man who I assume is the owner (?) is lovely and fun. Good service from everyone. Such good ambience, lovely location, best ever coffee, great food. I’m located in North Adelaide but it’s worth the drive every time. Plus, dogs! 💙

This place is iconic. A local hero. Been around for years and still so good. It’s very rustic and free, you can sit and eat out in nature. Super quirky with its veggie garden and gnomes. Great food and coffee and a playground and park just opposite so great for kids too.

Do yourself a favour and head to Joans Pantry. The most amazing blueberry scone with home made jam. They also have a fantastic selection of desserts/snacks. Staff are friendly, service is relatively quick, even when they're busy.

Visited here a few days ago with my daughter, her boyfriend and my dog after a walk in the Belair National Park. Cosy, pet friendly place with outdoor seating. As we had a dog, we chose to sit outside. There are a couple of rooms inside where there were patrons seated. We had to go inside to place our order at the front counter. The service was swift and friendly. My daughter kept raving about the scones and the homemade jam it was served with. In fact, they ordered a second helping of the same. Greedy buggers 🤭 The caffè latte I ordered was pretty standard but it did the job. There's a water bowl outside for your pets. Seemed to be quite a popular place with lots of people there. The carpark may seem a bit cramped however, there's a few carparks within walking distance of the cafe. Definitely a cafe worth visiting if you are in the area. 👍👍👍👍👍
