Review Brown Sugar Bondi - Bondi

Joyce Qiu
Great service and very aesthetic interior. Loved the shell/ocean theme. They have a different menu everyday. The food was pretty good and the portions are quite large.

Early March 22, Sean’s only makes 4 stars - just. They’re looking for a Chef so maybe they were short of talent this Friday. To my point, the salad was a boring lettuce and vinegarette dressing. Hope they get some one to get things back up to 5 stars soon.
Shannon C
Loved it. Set menu with a few options, all high quality and so delicious. If Maggie Beer dines there also then it must be top notch!
Nico Foley
First time I’ve been to Sean’s and had heard great things about it. The interior is super cute and the view is beautiful, but honestly the service was not great and the food was pretty normal really. The dishes really lacked flavour which I thought would be the opposite, given this place is known for its “paddock to plate” ethos. To be fair, the staff seemed a little stressed and there was sign on the door advertising for a new chef though, so maybe just a one off in bad circumstances…

Everything is perfect but it would be better if they improve the menu set a little bit. The food is too simple, but it shows the ingredient flavour which is pretty good. Would come back again! The interior is superb.

FYI - BYO @$25 Cork fee. Simple food that is executed perfectly. From the quality of the sourdough, to the tenderness of the chicken breast and the creaminess of the ice cream. The hospitality was absolutely superior and which I've rarely seen. I will definitely be re-attending Sean's.

Food was on point and definitely worth it. Wine selection was also good. Couldn't complain

The restaurant itself is beautiful and well located in Bondi however the service was horrendous for the price paid and the meals weren’t anything special. Menu on the board wasn’t updated properly, Wine wasn’t brought out, plates collected when others were still finishing eating, 45 min wait between entree and main which meant we exceed our time slot and was unable to order tea / coffee.

My partner and I are massive foodies. We are fortunate to travel the world for work and are obsessed with finding great hidden restaurants. Tonight we just enjoyed one of the most sensational 2 course meals we have ever tried. The Lamb belly was divine and both the fish and cavatelli delicious. Also the potato side way too addictive. Thank you for a beautiful meal and wonderful service!!! 5 stars and beyond!

Loved the food here! So different from other places! The service was pretty good as well! I would definitely come back! We had a huge breakfast for 2 and make sure to order the pancake too!

We enjoyed a sensational Sunday morning breakfast here. We were promptly greeted and seated and quickly after that the line outside began to grow, you could tell this was a popular place among locals as for good reason. We ordered the Moroccan eggs (baked eggs) a breakfast platter and a smoothie bowl. All dishes were full of flavour, made fresh and presented to a very high standard. And all for a reasonable price. Staff are friendly and even though the place is loud and crowded it is still very enjoyable to sit and chat. Besides the egg yolks being well over cooked in the baked eggs I have nothing but praise to give this place and will be back next time I'm in the area. Highly recommended.

Loved Brown Sugar. Have been a few times both in a group and as a couple. Fabulous both ways. Can be a nice romantic place.
Great food.
Great service.
Good decor.

We chose this place for our brunch because it had been ranked at top two in the area. We walked a bit away from the beach and found a rather small eating place. There was a good crowd but we had made a reservation, so we got our table in no time. We ordered breakfast platter, angel hair pasta, Morrocan eggs, ocean trout and South Australian mussles (see pictures). We liked all the foods, especially the way the seafoods were cooked and the sauces that were spiced well. The service and ambiance were okay. The only drawback was the squeezy place. All in all, I can recommend this place to those who like Mediterranian-like foods that come with bold spices.

This is one of the best food places in Bondi for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cafe food, but special. Excellent ingredients. Make sure it’s open before you go!

Agree with some of the comments below - food was amazing. However one of the female staff who served us was really rude and snotty, it pretty much ruined the whole experience (other staff were really nice and helpful though) ..

We took our overseas guests here . The food was outstanding - we loved the extra touch of olives, bread and brownies . I had the fish pie which was scrumptious ! Service was great ! Will def be back

Would rate this little gem to anyone. We had such a good evening. We ordered servers dishes to share. Food was fabulous! Great service, great recommendations, perfect night! ✌🏼

This is another gem in Bondi with amazing modern Australian food.
The service here is always great, the manager is super friendly whenever we visit.
We strongly recommend the raw tuna salad and the eggplant salad but we guarantee that whatever dish you choose you’ll enjoy!

They have lovely fried egg with herb. This kind of mediteranian food which suit for your hungry tummy. Nice place with good environment around

Food prices are $$ worth try

Headed here on a hectic saturday morning.

Food: 9/10
Coffee: 8/10
Wait time: 5/10
Price: 9/10

Give yourself a bit of time because the food delivery is a bit slow, but definitely worth the wait, nice accurate preparation and tasty dishes.

Maple bacon pancakes were epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There menu changes a lot which is cool to try new things. Really good coffee and cute small location.

Brown Sugar is probably Bondi's locals favourite institution for weekend brunch and dinner. The dimly-lit restaurant functions as a cafe during the day and a bistro-restaurant at night. The restaurant is virtually packed with hungry Sydneysiders, so bookings are a must!

I ordered their recommended cured trout, fish pie and chocolate fondant during my visit last month. The fish pie differs from Boathouse's version in its less sophisticated gravy so to serve as a foil to the fresh snapper. The chocolate fondant is chewy and sticky and will certainly leave a sweet impression on your tongue. My only peeve was the cured trout, which tasted fishy and slimy. The trout looked milky and did not seem fresh at all.

P.S. - Two servers for about 20 tables or 40-50 diners. Are you serious? Service is dead slow.

My boyfriend and I went here for a dinner the first time we arrived in Australia and loved it! We tried to come back again about three years ago, but couldn't get a spot without a booking. Spending a weekend in Sydney was the perfect occasion to come here again. All their meat is free range which means I can pick anything from the menu. We took the charcuterie board, the rib-eye with a coleslaw side and had a chocolate fondant dessert. All of it with a bottle of amazing Italian red (forgot the kind it was). The food was lovely, with as top dish definitely the dessert. Still love this place and would definitely come back again (don't say that often!).

Found this place through a zomato search, and boy was I glad! Only a ten minute wait for a table for 4 on a Sunday morning during peak-hour was excellent. The service was friendly and the food was exceptional. Only gripe was the granola should come with milk, but otherwise we were pretty damn pleased with this little corker. We will be back!
Manz
A local friend recommended the place, so stopped here for brunch before checking out the Sculptures. Expected the place to be full for Saturday brunch, but it was only about half full. However it still had a great vibe about. The food was devine! I had the asparagus & parmesan poached eggs with jamon serrano (Spanish ham). The truffle oil added great fragrant to the dish, the poached eggs were perfectly oozy. The service was ok. A good brunch option around the area.

Got told to visit this cafe by a friend of a friend because the food was really sensational. I agree - the food was amazing and had it not been for the rude and snotty staff I would be back in a flash. Unfortunately, the staff didn't accommodate. They weren't happy to see us nor were they checking up on us with our food and drinks. We didn't get thanked when leaving or even a goodbye. Maybe we weren't Bondi hipster enough for them - not sure. But I'll never return which is unfortunate on the chefs because they made a great meal. Disappointing.
Ann
The only thing that lets this place down is the incredibly poor service.
I visited Brown sugar with my sister for breakfast as she told me the pancakes were the best she'd ever had! The breakfast/ brunch menu was extensive and deciding on what to order was difficult because it all sounded great. Unfortunately, we waited around 25 minutes before even being served despite the cafe not being too busy. When we ordered, the waitress was rude and inconsiderate. I was reluctant to even stay because of the poor service we received.
When the food finally arrived it was good. I tried some of the pancakes which were really nice and I ordered the mushroom/ veggie breakfast which was tasty. The food here is fresh, tasty and unique but if you can't get past exceptionally rude and poor service then I wouldn't bother visiting brown sugar.

On Sydney's first hot day, everywhere in Bondi was packed but my friend highly recommended Brown Sugar so we decided to give it a try. We only had to wait 10-15mins for a table for 3. There were a few things on the menu I was very keen on trying but I chose the Moroccan eggs and a passionfruit soda . My friends both chose the chicken burger. My eggs were fantastic! I loved that the tahini and zhoug were on the side. I didn't touch my zhoug as I don't like it. I was curious to see what tahini would taste like with this dish and at first I was a bit skeptical but it was actually delicious! It added so much more flavour and the dish itself was flavoursome! I was very happy. My passionfruit soda was great also. My friends both enjoyed their chicken burgers however both agreed that it needed more sauce. Service was a little slow (after all, they were very busy) but staff were very friendly. A great experience and I would be happy to return.
Coffeebrunchanddinner
This is a little gem of a cafe that couples as a dinner place throughout the week. Open for breakfast, brunch and lunch on Fri/Sat/Sun from 8:30am - 2:30pm. The menu is great, it mixes up your usual breakfast fare and plenty of healthy options. This trend follows through into lunch with great looking salads and fresh sandwiches and pasta. If you are looking for a filling and hot breakfast the basil and feta scrambled eggs is a tasty pick. If you are looking for dinner head there Tuesday through Sun. Haven’t had a dinner meal yet but the cocktail list looks enticing enough to get me there. Will be back soon.
MsBrulee
The brunch and lunch menu at Brown Sugar is extensive and varied including burgers, salads, pastas, ribs, steak, sandwiches (phew) and poached eggs in just about any number of herbs and spices. I’d highly recommend visiting after 12pm, that way you have access to the all day brunch and the lunch options. Don’t get me wrong the breakfast menu sounds pretty attractive too but I just prefer eating later.

Another cool little cafe in Bondi that only offers brekky Fri Sat Sun (we were surprised on Wednesday). Looks small but seats quite a few indoors and outdoors. We were really happy with the food, tasty eggs and well cooked crispy bacon. The pancakes were a big hit, fruit compote from frozen fruit? (These fruits are still in season) Not so great. Coffee was a bit zingy, not the style I like but well made. Lovely sourdough toast and tasty scrambled eggs, lovely texture. Fairly safe and predictable menu. 1 friendly waitress, 1 a bit snippy.
Nathalie Christiansen
Not sure if we were in luck, but we did not have to wait for a table of 5 on a sunny Sat avo. Staffs were friendly and service was quick. And the food, absolutely love it! We love all the dishes and each was packed with flavours. I have to point out the moroccan eggs, especially, as it is usually tend to be a very bland and ordinary dish. But this was a pleasure every mouthful! Probably the best baked eggs in Sydney? My new favourite cafe. Definitely will be back for more!
Chris Littlejohn
Heard very good reports about this cafe from lots of people, and being a massive foodie I was naturally very keen to check it out.. But I was very disappointed! Service was pretty ordinary and very slow, and when the food came out I was disappointed but my mates looked a lot better still very small considering the price but was nice , and the pot of tea I ordered was a rip off barely got a cup and a half out of it.. Hopefully if I come back it will have improved.

Came here on a Saturday morning and had a relaxed and enjoyable meal. I got the English muffins with tomato, egg and bacon. The portions were a tad small, but what it lacked in size it made up for in taste!
Bottomlesspit
I cannot fault this place. The staff were so friendly and attentive. But the food was the shining star. We started with one of the specials which was a grilled fig salad, the flavours were an explosion. I had the barramundi, chick pea and black rice dish for main along with a beetroot and goats cheese salad as a side and it was probably one of the tastiest dishes I've had. And to top it off we didn't order dessert but they gave us a taster of their brownie on the house. BOOM!
Nic Larsen
Fish pie. Enough said.
Cynthia Ng
We waited more than an hour for a table for 5. And 30 mins wait for the food, but it's all worth it. Staff are very friendly and food is delicious. My favourite was the chicken burger. Yum! Will recommend this place to others. :)
Amelia
Came to this place on a sunny weekend in November for lunch, during Sculptures by the Sea. We were lucky to be seated right away as the place was very busy. I ordered the moroccan eggs, while my partner ordered the chicken burger with extra cheese and bacon. The food did take a while to come out, probably due to the fact that they had a full house. But when it did come out, it looked fantastic.

My moroccan eggs were still sizzling away in the pan with the slow cooked spiced capsicum and tomato, the flavour of which was the highlight of the whole dish. So tangy and delicious. My partner's meal looked incredible, the chicken crispy-skinned like it was straight out of the southern states of the USA, oozing with delicious mayo, and the potatoes looking perfectly brown and crispy. I had a bite and was the most delicious chicken burger I have ever tasted (I know what I'll be getting next time I go there!)

To top it all off, as we went to pay the bill, they gave us a free piece of brownie each - how nice is that! Which was also yummy and chocolatey. Can't wait to go back sometime!

favourite place in Australia to eat.
delicious in every way.
good food nice staff, great location... really expert chef.
The steak is always delicious and deserts to die for!
Laura Blanot
Definitely my favourite restaurant in Bondi, maybe even in Sydney!! Fine food, so full of flavours, unexpected mix of savours, service above expectations. I could never try the deserts because the main portions were too big... But they still offer you a slice of brownie at the end... What a nice touch!
Those Who Love To Eat
Saturday brunch /lunch at Brown sugar was a real treat. We had the lemongrass tuna and avocado and a black stone breakfast. The food came out in relatively good time, and the staff we really friendly even though they were quite busy. We asked to move tables, to the corner so we could both sit on the cushioned seats.
So what they say about a crowd attracting a crowd. It is true for this cafe! It serves wholesome unpretentious food and is full of flavour! It's a must try and bookmark kind place.

I ordered the black stone eggs. I enjoyed them and the side of hash browns were quite good. I've never had hash browns in that style before. Friendly quick service and quirky ambiance. I don't think it's a particularly impressive brunch joint, but I have no complaints.
Dan McCarthy
Food in this joint was really good, the brunch stuff was off the hook. I would've given 4.5 except I decided to drop it to four after the food took 45mins. I then decided to drop it to 3.5 after the cheque took 15 minutes (and counting). Bring a book. A long one, like Tolstoy or something

Ordered the Chicken burger. Wanted to eat healthy so I ask them if it's grilled chicken. They told me its fried chicken but then they said it's ok to change to grilled which makes me very happy. Also added extra bacon and cheese. The bacon is crispy and just so good. The burger itself is also satisfying. The weather was gloomy but the burger delighted me day. Good one.

I've been here for breakfast a few times and it's always great. One of the best breakfast joints in Bondi. Good produce, decent portions, fairly priced.
Looking forward to coming and trying their lunch and dinner options.

My Bondi Gem. When in doubt of where to dine, I always choose brown sugar. I've never had a bad experience in all the times I've visited .

Any chance I find myself in the east on a weekend, it's my go to place for breakfast or lunch.

Although dinner is there crowning jewel. Great wholesome and flavoursome menu staples.
Brown sugar is a Bondi institution and you haven't lived until you've tried their fish pie!
Race Brunch Repeat
What makes a post-run, 4-egg generously seasoned omelette with a tantalising dribble of smoked fish on top so special? Make-able at home and best enjoyed on the couch in track pants. This is why I left Brown Sugar mildly disappointed - restaurant prices for DIY comfort food. My stomach was satisfied, my card balance was not. Today's lesson is beware the devil in eggs on toast - it carries many disguises. At least this is reinforced by fresh vegetables and cured proteins. Four at the table means good scope for dish swaps. I reason that sharing a Mixed Platter gives excellent diversification benefits. Minimal dud order risk. Breakfast platter - vegetables, quinoa, hash, eggs on za'atar toast $22 for a single, $40 for double ... retail selling 101 and by the wife's shopping logic, this is a buy one get the second 20% off! A relative bargain, so to speak. A highly enjoyable royal rumble of six quality elements. Quinoa stands tall and cute bits of cauliflower roasted in spice plus crunchy almond flakes will turn any meat lover. Picked red cabbage was delicious The chefs don't try to overwork the produce; so important. Maccas worked out long ago that fried potato is a crowd pleaser; the chef's copy this mantra. 8/10 effort but not worth dwelling upon. Onion and Mushroom Bialy - a dyslexic mouthful. Onion and mushroom bialy with smoked trout, poached egg salmon roe & lemon butter - $18 Ultra thick succulent mushrooms with smoked trout drenched in egg yolk is powerful indeed. Call it what you want, but this is a premium bagel juiced up with steroidal use of trout. The visual reminds me of a queen sized blanket covering a single mattress. Smoked trout with perfectly poached egg In 2012 I accidentally ran the NY Road Runners 18 mile race, I merged a free giant bagel at the finish with store bought salmon. This combo was eaten on a bench in Central Park Manhattan - net cost $3 plus 2.5 hours running pain. My benchmark experience, pun intended! Today's bagel delivered similar

When you see private housing, just keep walking till you see it. As long as you are on the right street, even if it looks kinda weird, just keep walking! Brown Sugar, and contact number. at Bondi Beach area.

I opted for my favourite menu item the ‘five sides’($15), tomato, avocado, toast, and a choice of either prosciutto or smoked salmon and ricotta or feta. I usually go for the prosciutto and ricotta but in the spirit of #realchange had the salmon and feta instead. Delicious, fresh and not too naughty. The quality is top notch, and you can build little toastie combinations of all your fixins. But the real show stopper belonged to the Bouy, who wisely chose the buttermilk pancakes with bacon, banana and maple syrup ($16). I was jealous and highly suspicious of his c

What I’m looking for in the perfect brunch place, apart from the mandatory good coffee, is an exhaustive menu of breakfast options that will cater for my everchanging morning cravings. Being the first meal of the day you want to get your day off to a terrific start whether it’s in a sweet or savoury direction (the big decisions). Brown Sugar is the perfect spot for me with a broad and tasty menu in a seaside locale. In fact Brown Sugar has long been my favourite place for breakfast in all of Sydney. Brown Sugar Interior Catching up with friends for this Sunday brunch I’m delighted to catch up with good friends at my absolute favourite spot for brekky. Am also quite fortunate that everyone feels like something different off the menu giving us a diverse journey this Saturday morning. This popular Bondi café/restaurant is a great option for date nights. Due to a change in plans, my partner was under pressure to find a last minute ‘date night’ venue – he called Brown Sugar on Friday morning and was put on a waitlist. Lucky for us, there was eventually a cancellation and we managed to secure a table for the 8pm sitting.
Next Stop: Food
Obviously, we attacked the fondant first and that sexy chocolate sauce oozing out was absolutely DELICIOUS. The richness is balanced out by the mulberry sorbet next to it. The rich chocolate truffle was ginormous which helped to satisfy my chocolate craving!
On The Chopping Board
Channelling my inner hipster and a whole lot of strength to battle the traffic in Bondi on a Sunday morning, we headed to Brown Sugar. An acclaimed, relatively new eating place set back from Bondi Beach. Reading Yelp reviews told us we should be prepared for a long line up - 15 minutes wasn't anywhere as bad as we anticipated.
Steph L
The food was perfect!
As usual..I had to have my baked eggs…the sauce was cooked very well…
And scrambled eggs…YUM!
Charn Tangson
There’s a reason why I picked this in particular, mainly because of the word ‘truffle’. Its been a while since my last poached eggs and I’m glad I tried this! There was a sprinkle of crunchy onions (I believe they were onions), really tasty prosciutto and the beautifully yellow and smooth yolk. Black Stone Eggs – English muffin, tomato, poached egg, hash brown Mr C’s choice were the black stone eggs. I imagined the eggs to be cooked black or served as a hard boiled egg but that wasn’t the case, it was actually referring to the unique hash brown with fillings. I loved the hash brown, it was deep fried until they were a beautiful golden brown and very crunchy. Their gourmet tomatoes were deliciously sweet and juicy. Skim Latte We ordered a skim latte with no sugar to help fix my lack of sleep the night before.

Standard $25 to fill you up and quench your thirst, unless you’re as hungry as me of course, then you might need a mortgage.

my dish was just divine. Grilled asparagus with poached eggs and a generous serving of prosciutto, sprinkled just slightly with parmesan and this silky smooth, extraordinary truffle oil.

I suddenly feel like I'm 10 years old again! It tastes just as good as it did way back then.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Alex Harmon also visited another of my Bondi favourites, Brown Sugar. Here's what she thought... Breakfast at Brown Sugar is more hyped than Breakfast at Tiffany's . So, ignoring the ' Best Breakfast in the East ' award bestowed by Sydney diners, and numerous poached egg recommendations from friends, I discovered that this cafe actually shines at night. Seared Local Scallops ($17) with parsnip puree, hazelnuts, pear and saffron chutney are a silky delight, perfectly designed and presented. Yellow Fin Tuna Tataki ($17) , similarly plated like a work of art, is served with crispy apple, avocado and coriander salad. It's not just seafood; they do a superb Crispy Pork Belly ($32) with carrot puree and black lentils. Sheltered in mustard cress and surrounded by walnuts, it looks like a wood cabin, making it something to be marveled at. And yes, it tastes as good too. The Twice-Baked Gruyere Soufflé ($17) looks stunning on the plate but is let down by over-saltiness, heightened by the

I’d heard about Brown Sugar in various lists of best Bondi cafes, but had never managed to get there. Today, a weekday, a day off work, otherwise known as a “doona day” or “mental health day” was the day to get there. It was a glorious day, and after a st

The cafe keeps things fairly simple with the main decoration a wall painted entirely black with the menu painted on. Brunch here is sensational with a menu that runs all day. One of the best dishes is the Black Stone eggs ($15) which includes poached eggs served on english muffins with bacon and slow roasted tomatoes. The home made hash browns on the side are as good as you’ll get anywhere. The Moroccan eggs ($17) is also worth ordering with sweet slow cooked spiced capsicum and tomatoes surrounding a poached egg. The sides here are baby spinach and toasted turkish bread spiced with za’atar. The only fault here is the service, while our waitress was really friendly she man

Went with some friends who recommended this place. As we are from interstate we trusted their judgment. I was glad we listened. The entree, main and dessert were 5 star. The service was very friendly and professional. If I was a local this would be my first choice of restaurant. Thanks to all for a great night.
Colin
When I was previously there I was very impressed. But on my last trip the service was terrible and the food quality worse. I will not be returning.
Malcolm Baron
Really, really good. One my my oldest and dearest friends took me to this spot on a Sunny spring morning in Bondi. He'd talked it up quite a bit so expectations where high. Needless to say I wasn't let down. This spot is genuinely one of the best breakfast spots ive been too in my life. The meals were delicious, the service was exceptional and the coffee was perfect.

Really good.

Cant wait to come back through.
Mark Biggart
Folks I was in for dinner on Sunday with family visiting after being there many times for breakfast and drooling at the dinner menu for 2 years. Without doubt one of the nicest meals I have had in ages and family were delighted. Only criticism, wines far too expensive. Should be BYO.

This breakfast joint transforms into a romantic little gem for dinner. Service was on point. The food... Surprisingly best meal I've had in awhile. Everything put in front of us tasted soooo good. Entree mussels was pretty much a main size.. The waited said he would split the mussels into 2 plates to make it less messy for us. When it came out I thought it was two mains. The gruyere cheese soufflé so rich and decadent. My fish pie.. Huge serving and big pieces of fish inside. My partner's beef cheeks was.. well slow cooked in 12 hours- exactly what waiter described it as. He said it melted in his mouth. Excellent value for money and tasted soooo good. Coming back for sure!

Favourite Nook in Bondi. I have eaten here about 8 times. I love it.
Ordinary foods become extraordinary. The asparagus entree is divine! as are the scallops, the zucchini flowers...need I list them all? I have had delicious lamb, great steak, and my all time favourite, the fish pie. Being gluten free is no problem: they even make my fish pie topless on request! The dessert...where do I start? The dessert platter in Good Food Month was to die for! the chocolate fondant is famous in its own right. Creme Brulee, Panacotta and fantastic sorbets and gelatos all made in-house.
The service is brilliant and the wine is divine. I love Brown Sugar!

Brown sugar was good but not great. I ordered the pan fried ocean trout off the menu but the waiter informed that the menu had changed after we ordered and when the food came out I found out that it was Barramundi. I like Barra so wasn't unhappy about the change but this is just one example of inconsistency from Brown Sugar and it needs work. Food was nice but I found my Barra with salad to be fairly bland/salty and expected more better from a $32 dish. It was really busy and waiters tried hard but service was not good - we asked for our bill 4 times and other tables had meals forgotten. The whole place feels cramped and I think they could do with getting rid of a few tables just to open up the space a bit more while also taking pressure off the wait staff as the place was overly busy.

Amazing scrambled tofu. I have tried a number of variations of this dish with this being one of the best. They shred organic firm tofu and serve it with yummy mushrooms and half an avocado. It comes with toast - with a choice of gluten free, sourdough, rye, turkish or white. The avocado stops the scrambled tofu dish being too samey and I don't know why but the gluten free bread with the avocado amazing.

Best breakfast place on Bondi!!!

Terrible, horrible, shocking. A few weeks ago i decided that i have had my very last encounter with Brown Sugar. i have never had waitstaff treat me with such outright rudeness and disrespect. after waiting 50 minutes for a table, it took another the headwaitress / maitre d 20 minutes to do me the favour of taking my order. food was bland and over priced. im done with BS (pun intended)

Went for brunch recently. It was average. I've eaten a lot of brunch in the Eastern Suburbs lately and was really looking forward to Brown Sugar as I'd see lot of people queuing outside it at week ends. Unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype. Food was ok, but service was unfriendly and I got the wrong coffee. Overall it's an average spot and i wouldn't return - there are plenty of options in Bondi.

Food is amazing... Simply amazing!!!! Well worth the value!!! A really good find! Must try!

Although the waiter got my order wrong this was promptly resolved and well handled. The good is delicious and I love the relaxed feel of te place. I've been a couple of times and look forward to the next visit.

WORST FOOD. We have been here a few times over the years but never again! The food has become so bad, on our last and final visit we couldn't eat it. We asked for the bill, paid and left without eating. NEW CHEF required, applicants apply within

Delicious. I came here with friends last week and we were all overwhelmed by the great sounding menu. the food was amazing. The brown sugar salad was so good and the paninis were good too!

Brown Sugar is a favourite of mine for breakfast, particularly for their Blackstone Eggs and good coffee. After hearing great things about their dinner menu, last night I tried it the first time and I am sad to say I was fairly disappointed. Food and service was ok, but did not match the fine dining price bracket. We were on an early booking and so had only 2 hours, but waited some time for our mains to come out - so much so that we didn't have time for dessert. We ordered a 2008 bottle of Chardonnay and when a 2009 bottle appeared at our table received quite a careless / surprised reaction to our complaint. Overall a good atmosphere and ok food, but not somewhere I'll be going again for dinner anytime soon.

Never, ever again!. Brown Sugar's service has always been hesitant, rude and dripping with disdain. As a Bondi local I have tolerated it thus far because the food has always outweighed the terrible service. But no longer. I have finally been treated with enough disrespect and attitude that I will do the only thing I can and vote with my feet and NEVER RETURN.

We arrived on a Sunday morning for brunch. We were told the wait “shouldn’t be longer than ten minutes or so”. Fine, no problem. After 30 minutes we inquired about our table, finally after 50 minutes we were given a table with no hint of an apology or even a smile.

We ordered coffees and drinks straight away and told the waitress that we were ready to order when she was (we had plenty of time to peruse the menu while we waited for almost an hour). We were told that she wasn’t taking orders. We flagged down another waitress who also wasn’t taking orders. We finally got the attention of the manager / head waitress / owner / maitre de and asked her if she wouldn’t mind taking our order. She rolled her eyes, and snapped that she was really busy and then told us that she also wasn’t taking orders. Call me old school, but I miss the days when those who work in hospitality were actually hospitable. I know it’s a big ask to have our order taken an hour and 20 minutes after we arrive at a café, but pretty please Miss Boss Woman?

A fourth waitress finally took our order. I wanted a simple breakfast of poached eggs on toast. I was told that they no longer were serving poached eggs (from the breakfast menu) even though poached eggs is a feature of their all day brunch menu. I understand if I was asking for ingredients that had been put away or were no longer in stock, but Brown sugar was still serving toast and still serving poached eggs.

The final straw was when the table seated next to us, who arrived and ordered after us got their food before us, and guess what? THEY GOT POACHED EGGS.

I would tolerate Brown Sugar’s flaws if not for the terribly rude staff. I don’t know who they are, or more importantly WHO THEY THINK THEY ARE? But I get enough attitude from clients etc and don’t pay premium prices to bear the brunt of some snotty managers foul mood.

There are cheaper, yummier and more pleasant places for brunch. I shall not be returning.

Our best local. Food has always been superb, without exception. Our favourites are definitely the cheese soufflé and the fish pie. Friendly staff. Warm atmosphere. Strongly recommended.

One of Bondi's best!. This tiny little eatery is perfect for any meal of the day. Breakfast / Brunch menu is full of gourmet treats and some of the best hash browns I have ever had.

For dinner is it a MUST you get the fish pie, it is phenomenal and served with creamy truffled mash. They also go a fantastic steak.

Waited 50 minutes for mains without even being offered bread.
Mozzarella/tomato is simple and overpriced. Very heavy on the tomato and too light on the mozzarella.
Prawns were good. Lamb was good however I consider both overpriced.
Good atmosphere and interior.

Fish pie... Yum and very generous. Also tried the souffle... Was filling but nice! Good size portions and good quality food. One of my favorite places. Nice couple place. Good ambience.

Fish Pie. The most perfect place to be when it's raining in Sydney - at brown sugar eating fish pie!! 100% sure it's the best in NSW.

Worth the trip to Bondi. Had the perfect breakfast here last weekend. Gorgeous little place with fast service and smashing food, always really busy. Five sides is my favourite, savoury breakfasts without eggs this good are hard to find.

Birthday Brilliance. I dined here with 3 friends early December, on my birthday. We booked the afternoon, I had not mentioned it was my birthday as I'm not one to make a point of it.

The place was busy, but the atmosphere was great. It's loud, and a little cramped, but that's what makes it such a great place.

The food ... Wow ... Best meal I've ever eaten on any given birthday! We had entree's of stuffed zucchini flours which were fantastic. The taste buds were awoken and left us excited for our mains, which didn't failure to deliver. DELICIOUS!

But here's what made our night. The waiter had over heard my friend talking about my birthday, and he wished me a happy birthday. Before desserts arrived, he returned with 4 slices of the best brownie we'd ever eaten, with a candle in mine. He then began to sing happy birthday with a group of French sitting next to us. A memorable night to say the least.

Thanks Brown Sugar, we will be back!

Amazing!. I went here for news years eve with a group of people and it was an all night affair.
A special menu with matched wines, everything on the menu sounded delicious and was even better when it arrived. Our night here felt like an indulgent Heston's feast and we oohh and ahhh over the delicate flavours of our dishes.
The wine were so exquisitely matched with each dish and with the very generous glass sizes, we were merry in no time and all.
Waiters were very attentive and friendly. I would highly reccomend Brown sugar.

As good as ever. We returned to an old favourite and wasn't disappointed. The service was excellent as was the food, we all had the fillet steak which was spot on. I usually have the fish pie but decided to try something different this time.
The fact it is BYO just makes it perfect.

-----22 Dec, 2011-----

As good as ever !. We booked the last table on a saturday evening and we were so glad we did. The food and service at Brown Sugar are always spot on and this time didn't let us down.

45 minute wait for lunch...you have to be kidding. Not sure if they have changed ownership but this isn't a place I will come back to anytime soon.

Gimme some'a'dat Brown Sugar baby. One word: Amazing.

I had heard good things about Brown Sugar but had never had the chance to visit until now. The whole experience left me wanting...wanting more!!!

Ambience:
Tucked away in the back streets of Bondi (Curlewis st), this restaurant is quaint, warm and inviting. Colourful candles light the tables, a big black board menu double acts as the wall. Most of the tables are inside but there is the option to sit alfresco on the street.

It is far enough away from the main strip of Bondi to avoid all the noise and hoopla Bondi can be known for on a Saturday night, but close enough to feel the ocean breeze and smelt the salt in the air.

To Eat:
The website states "Our seasonal menu is composed of the finest, locally sourced, ethically harvested produce that we can get our hands on" and it did not disappoint.
You can order a la carte or from their specials.

Here's what we ordered:

Entree:
Seared Yellow Fin with a mustard and soy vinaigrette, mesculin leaf and avocado salad.

Gruyere souffle and shaved green asparagus salad with the option of proscuitto (hell yeah!). ($16)

Not satisfied with one each my companion and I went halves and I am so glad we did! Both were outstanding. The light asian flavours of the tuna and the incredible fluffy goodness of the souffle left us smacking our chops and super excited about the next course!

Mains:
Squid ink rag pasta with crab, semi dried tomatoes, chilli and saffron ($32)

Rich but not heavy, succulent crab meat, perfectly cooked pasta and just the right amount of chilli so it flirted with your taste buds.

Roast lamb rump with swiss browns, shitake, enoki and salsa verde. ($32)

Cooked medium rare (the way it should be cooked!), the Lamb was so tender and bursting with flavour.
If you're a mushroom fiend like me, you'll be in 7th heaven with the orgy of fungus this dish delivers. The different flavours of the mushroom complement the lamb and it is one of those dishes you wish never ended.

We ordered a small side of spinach, roast beetroot, goats cheese and walnut salad - plenty enough for two. ($9)

Dessert (I'll diet tomorrow):
Cinnamon pannacotta, amaretti, rhubarb and apple sorbet ($14)

The best way to describe this is like a summer sun shower. Light, refreshing, smells like summer, tastes like summer and leaves you beaming. The pannacotta was light and velvety, not heavy and "gluggy" like some pannacotta's I've had before. The apple sorbet so was fresh and crisp and the rhubarb offset the sweetness perfectly. There was a sprinkling of roasted peanuts on top which offset the smoothness of the pannacotta.
Neither of us spoke a word whilst we ate it.

Hazelnut chocolate fondant with expresso - maple ice cream ($16)

Like, wow. Completely different to the pannacotta, the fondant was like a warm bed with silk sheets. Slide right in and lose yourself! Break open the fondant and the river of chocolate oozes out and mixes with the maple ice cream to create the sweet tooth's interpretation of heaven on a plate. I LOVE the crispy outer mixing with the running inside - like a perfectly soft boiled egg only better, coz it's chocolate! This dessert knocked my stilettos off.

To Drink:
It is licensed, boasting a lovely list from boutique Australian and New Zealand vineyards. If you prefer your own, you can and BYO with a corkage charge of $12 per bottle. We brought a bottle of Turkey Flat Rose with us, inspired by the heat of a Sydney summer's day.

Total: $145 (two people: three courses each, one side to share and corkage for one bottle of wine).

The Service:
Couldn't fault it. Staff were friendly, efficient, attentive, in tune (quite a gift) and very knowledgeable, about each of the menu items and how they were prepared. One thing I am very sensitive to is staff arrogance and I've seen a lot of it in Bondi - not here though. Everyone was lovely and sans attitude.

Overall:
Love, love love. It is great for both a casual outing or a special occasion. You come away knowing that you have enjoyed quality produce prepared beautifully by a chef who has clearly put a lot of thought into the flavour combinations and takes great pride in what is presented to diners. For a total of $145 we felt we had enjoyed exceptional value for money.

Thank you for a lovely night , I will definitely be back to get me some more of that Brown Sugar.

Tips:
- Book if you can, it was very popular on a saturday night and many "walk ups" were turned away
- Order something you wouldn't normally have, guaranteed it won't disappoint.
- Lots of dishes had nuts so if you have a nut allergy phone ahead and speak to the chef about your options
- Catch a cab (you'll want to have a drink)
- Apparently breakfast is amazing but I don't think you can book
- check out their website http://brownsugarbondi.com.au/

Thanks for a great night Brown Sugar. The risk is always to the downside when you hear so many good things about a restaurant from family and friends. Even an ok outcome would disappoint. I am however, very happy to say that Brown Sugar not only delivered but did so convincingly.
For entrees, between the 4 of us, we had the seared tuna (one of the day's specials), chicken liver pate, the seared scallops and the grilled haloumi. The tuna and scallops were perfectly prepared - strong flavors and sublime texture - and were definitely my favourites.
Mains consisted of the grilled eye fillet w porcini butter, fish pie w leek & truffle oil and the bouillabaise (off the specials board). For one our group who is regular at Brown Sugar, the fish pie is a perennial favourite and is consistently good. The flavours and preparation of the eye fillets was great and exactly as requested. The bouillabaisse was tasty and like every dish we ordered was a solid portion.
After ordering entrees, mains, a bottle of wine, a couple of bottles of mineral water and coffees, we were very happily surprised when the bill arrived.
Overall, excellent food and a pleasure to not have to a premium for the hype that so many 'celebrity chefs' around town believe they deserve.

Waste of a night. My partner and I arrived promptly at 8:30 for our reservation. We had no entree, and the special's had no prices so I wasn't aware that I was paying $45 for a steak. When it finally came, at 10:20, I was so hungry that I couldn't be bothered to tell the snooty waiter that it was well done when I had asked for medium-rare. I would never waste my time or money to go back and give them a second chance. Definately the worst dining experience I have ever had. How they survive is beyond me, must be too many people in Bondi with a lot of money to throw away on a bad night out. Honestly couldn't see what was so good about the place, it's just an expensive café with bad service.

Disappointed. Went there for dinner on a Friday night. I was looking forward to it because I'd heard such good reviews.. unfortunately i was extremely disappointed.. Our waiter suggested the Biltong as an entree, since they had gone to the Biltong shop (wherever that is) and specially selected it. Well, firstly it was sliced way too thin and secondly it was mild and tasteless. Furthermore we were not offered a roll or bread, to start.. wake up Brown Sugar this is a standard offering at all quality restaurants - don't understand why they would not do that. Our other entree was the cured ocean trout, this wasn't too bad, but would have been nicer with a roll. For mains, I ordered the Squid Ink pasta.. terrible! so disappointing.. the chef obviously did not taste this dish - there was nowhere near enough salt.. and I had to request parmesan cheese to give the dish some flavour.. My wife ordered the fish pie, and to be honest this was the saving grace.. If I ever go back (i doubt it) i will order this dish, it was very good.

Fantastic food, personable service, creative and innovative dishes. Best breakfast in Sydney, and the finest dinner in the Eastern Suburbs. Superb restaurant

Divine! This is absolutely my new favorite restaurant. Each bite was sensational and commands your attention. Even when you think there is no room left, the cheese plate goes down a treat.

Mmm breakie time. Best breakie in Sydney without a doubt
