Review Wa Japanese Restaurant - Bondi

Excellent food. Nice quaint Japanese restaurant in the heart of Bondi Junction. Easy to park outside after hours (for dinner)

Friendly and quick service. Generous portions. Sushi sashimi mix consisted mainly of tuna and salmon so could benefit from a bit more variety.

Favourite restaurant in the area! The food is so yummy and the staff are very friendly and kind. Always a joy to eat at Wa :)

The first impression of the menu was that the price is on the high end, but after the food arrived and tasted, it is worth every penny. Waguy beef so tender, juicy and source full of flavours. Specially rice for sushi and set menu dishes. Good location but limited seating capacity and spacr when it's busy. The indoor seating allows you to unintentionally hear your neighbours conversation at the next table. Very friendly and attentive staff serving customers. Highly recommended if you are after quality and service.

Wa Japanese Restaurant is very popular and it is a good idea to book ahead especially if you are in a group of four or more. The food is really tasty and you can specify if you want it spicy or not. Most of the mains come with salad, vegetables and rice. Wa always do a great eggplant entree. The staff are friendly and attentive. I suppose the only problem is that it is so popular and therefore crowded that it can be a bit noisy. For this reason I recommend a seat outside of the main dining area in the building's foyer.

This is a great place in Bondi Junction for Japanese food, it’s moved from across the road and looks like it’s now in a restaurant that used to be Italian hence some of the internal designs that don’t look very authentic 👍🏼 The food is great, can get very busy at meal times and the service can be a bit chaotic and slow but the food is always served with a smile, if you’re not in a hurry then it’s really enjoyable!! Definitely worth a visit 😊

Wow! So we have been Wa customers for 17 years. When we wanted to eat out, Wa Japanese Restaurant Cafe was our favorite. We had Wa catering - sushi and other yummy dishes - for our son’s 21st birthday party. The food at Wa was always superb, prepared fresh, authentic Japanese and artistically presented and eating out of beautiful Japanese porcelain ware and drinking out of clean, gleaming glasses were so refreshing. Last night, my husband and I brought our visiting son and his guest back to Wa. He missed saying hi to the friendly chefs. He missed the fine food. We each had the 6-course dinner. The verdict: food quality and presentation is a welcome constant. Wa does its best to ensure its offerings are done the same always: whether it be years ago, yesterday or today. We have been to restaurants where food quality varies. Not with Wa. Fine food is always presented in the freshest and most artistic form. Wa is on the ground floor (on the right) of The Forum, a commercial and residential building, 310-330 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction. Wa is open Tuesday to Saturday 11am - 2.30pm, 5 - 9.30pm; Sunday 5 - 9.30pm. It is closed Mondays.

I don't go to Bondi Junction very often. But if you find yourself over that way and you are looking for a good place to eat, try Wa. It's an authentic Japanese restaurant set in a beautiful ornate terrace that seems to go back forever. And so does the menu. I can't help you decided what to get from the edamame, gyoza dumplings, sashimi and sushi, yukitori chicken, karaage chicken and crab, teriyaki beef, pork and chicken. But I do recommend the seaweed salad, the nasu dengaku spicy deep-fried eggplant and the ginger beef.

Very impressed with the quality and presentation of the food and the ambience and decor of the restaurant in general. Glad to have finally gone there after talking about it for too long.

I went to Wa last night with some friends for dinner and had a fantastic evening. The staff were incredibly friendly and the food was delicious. We ate edamame, prawn gyoza, agedashi tofu, chicken yakitori and some sushi and sashimi. Everything was fresh and full of flavour. I recommend anyone to go here. They welcome families as well as groups of adults out for a laugh. The restaurant is byo so you can bring a bottle for a small corkage fee.

I used to pick up their salmon salad back when I lived in Bondi Junction and they were right around the corner. Generous portions and simply delicious.

I've been to Wa Japanese Restaurant multiple times with family for lunch and dinner and I absolutely love the food they offer. Having been to Japan and experiencing the food there, I still highly rate the food that is served at Wa Japanese Restaurant. It's always amazing every time I dine!

Not authentic Japanese cuisine. The mains did not seem to be thought through as there was wasabi, teriyaki and sweet chilli sauce all on the same plate. The vegetables are piled on top of the coslaw with a cob of corn on the side. The salmon was overcooked. On the plus side staff were friendly

Wa Japanese Restaurant is a mediocre restaurant serving an assortment of Japanese cuisine ranging from tempura to sushi and sashimi. I tried their prawn tempura, unagi ngiri and teriyaki chicken & avocado roll last weekend.

First of all, perfect sushi starts with perfect rice. It is impossible to make a good sushi without good quality, translucent japonica rice. Japonica rice grains are rounder, thicker and produce a higher content of amylopectin so that the rice is stickier and more suitable for sushi. The rice used at Wa is low-grade (like 99% of Japanese restaurants in Sydney) which explains why the sushi disintegrates immediately when I pick it up. Then I should have ordered bento instead, right?

Second, basic techniques of rolling, compressing and arranging are essential to a sushi chef. If you tried a sushi in Tokyo, Singapore or Hong Kong, the chefs would even remove the protruding ends so that all the sushi looked nimble and similar. Note that sushi prices in Sydney are 3 to 4 times more than that in the above cities and we get lower quality rice and unremarkable sushi.

Lastly, the tempura was just so rudimentary. The layer of batter was so thick that a large portion was uncooked and raw. And it would be nice to either use fresher prawns or marinate them to conceal its "fishy" smell.

Had lunch here with a friend during a visit to Sydney. The service is friendly, the restaurant is attractive but the food is the real stand out. Oh my goodness! We ordered the seaweed salad, the prawn gyozas, the Assorted Sashimi main and the tempura prawn handroll. Everything was AMAZING! So delicious! The sesame dressing on the salad was so delicious I could have had it in a glass and drank it! The mixed Sashimi was beautiful and FRESH! It came with a fantastic assortment of kingfish, tuna, salmon, scallops and prawns! The Tempura Prawn handroll was made to order and the tempura was crispy and hot as a result- so delicious! All the portion sizes were generous and the price was very reasonable! Will definitely be coming back when I next visit Sydney! (No pictures of the Gyozas as we ate them too quickly and forgot to!)

This is a tiny Japanese restaurant in bondi junction and in my opinion it's the best in the area. The sushi and sashimi are fresh and the mixed platters are delicious. The prices are extremely reasonable. They also offer teriyaki beef, pork, chicken or salmon delicious tempura and any type of noodle dish you would expect to find at a Japanese restaurant. Make sure you save room for dessert and try the black sesame, green tea or lychee ice cream. Highly recommend this Japanese - and it's byo!

Nice little Japanese/Vietnamese restaurant in Bondi Junction. Their english is not the best, but they are friendly and try their best to make you welcome. They have a wide variety of good food like sashimi, udon, hot dishes and a range of entrees and desserts . The portions are a little small for the price you pay but it was tasty. The beef noodle soup is probably best value meal at the restaurant as it is a decent size. Still a little expensive considering Mappen and Ryo's are around the corner. For something different I really liked the chicken wing gyoza. A deboned chicken wing stuffed with gyoza filling. We also had the mixed sashimi which was very fresh but a tad small. The tofu was delicious, and this is saying a lot as I'm very picky with tofu. Hard to get in as it's very popular, we tried a few times and booked on the third. Nice food but reasonably expensive for the size.

I love this place. Every time I am in Bondi Junction I try to stop by, sometimes multiple times in one day. Delicious food and very courteous staff. Highly recommend.

This a difficult one to review. On one hand, it has nice deco, friendly staff and yummy food. What's not quite right about this place is that it's a Japanese restaurant but everything about it is Vietnamese. The wall deco is Vietnamese themed, the waitress dressed like Vietnamese and the food have used lots spices which is not typical of Japanese. Enjoyable but just don't expect Japanese.

The last time I was here was a few years ago and we sat at the back courtyard but tonight they had that area closed off as winter just finished and the night is still cool. So we sat in the front room which has limited seating and were all reserved for the night.

As we had a toddler in tow, we had a early seating of 5pm and even when the restaurant got busy the staff were all smiles and friendly. We ordered a lot of food and we all walked out very full.

We started off with the seaweed salad, agedashi kochi, eggplant with sweet sauce, soft shell crab and avocado sushi and the pumpkin croquette. My husband then had their sushi main size and I had their mixed sashimi entree size, my MIL tried their green tea soba with miso broth and chicken teriyaki (forgot to take pic). Portions are generous and pricing is very reasonable. As its close to home, we will definitely come here more often as its very kid friendly.

Came her for a Friday night dinner and was lucky enough to nab a table without a booking before the 7pm rush. This service was great and the food excellent. A little pricy for Japanese but servings are big and it's super fresh. The noodle soup was so yummy we had the teriyaki chicken with soba noodles and I highly recommend. I'll definitely be back to try the lunch menu.
Bondi Local
Favourite Japanese in Sydney. We are locals and have been coming here for over 5 years and we absolutely love it. The food and service are always exceptional. They even offer a complimentary appetiser once you have ordered your meal. They are also really good with kids. Yum!

Sit down Japanese in Bondi Junction. Bondi Junction has its fair share of Japanese right across the spectrum. Probably most popular are the hordes is Sushi Train that gets hordes and hordes of people but this place had been on my list for a long long time. Went for lunch as it's cheaper. Had the karaage and then the yakitori. Some element of gristle in the karaage which can be intentional in Japanese food but was no warning of it so a little disappointed. The yakitori was average. Much better value was the salmon sushi plate which was fresh and good value at $11. Not sure that it demands hiking out to Bondi Junction but if you're in this area for lunch, well worth considering. The ringing of the gong upon exiting is a nice touch as well.

Wa Japanese Restaurant is a little cafe style restaurant situated on Oxford st at Bondi Junction – within walking distance from the mall (street parking is 1/2P or 1P hour before 6pm everyday). You won’t miss it. It has a little quirk about it with vintage bicycle being used to decorate the entrance. Interior is

Great food and great value. The Mushroom salad was divine.

Great!. We went there for a dinner on a Sunday night. We beat the rush just by a few minutes getting before 6.30.

Can't lie, the menu looked a bit expensive, but we stayed. We got miso soup, teriyaki eel, prawn gyoza, soft shell crab roll, and green tea ice cream. The soup was very good, not to salty like it is in most places, full of flavor. The teriyaki eel was super tender, served on a bed of perfectly cooked green beans and other vegetables, accompanied by white and red rice as well as a spring roll.
The gyozas were tender and tasty. The soft shell crab roll was massive and had a separate crab in the middle of the place.
The ice cream ($6) was 4 scoops and was creamier than I'd like and less "green tea" flavor I prefer. Still good though.

After we got home I realized that their lunch prices are much, much lower than the dinner ones. Not sure how the sizes compares, but I am tempted to go there for lunch and enjoy the food.

Wa:get on your bike and eat here. Wa's interior theme is bicycle. Floor to ceiling with bike artifacts.
More importantly the food is just consistently delicious.
Attentive and well trained, food is brought out by a pelaton of serving staff.
It gets busy, but in keeping with the cycle theme, the meals are served in a speedy cadence, and there is a rhythmical turnover of food and happy clients.
You can be well fed, in and out very comfortably in 45 mins. A great time trial.
It's all good here. But our favourites are the eggplant with miso paste, the sushi plate and all of the vegetarian dishes.
And to cap it all off, anytime any patron leaves Wa, the guest is farewelled by a gentle, but very present gong.
Should the fact that we have eaten here 3 times in 3 weeks, be enough of an endorsement? Wa is possibly my officially favorite Japanese restaurant this side of Asakusa in Rose Bay.
Get on your bike, do yourself a favour and eat at Wa.

Quirky but Quality.. When you've settled down to concentrate on the menu rather than all the bicycle paraphernalia from floor to ceiling in this cute japanese restaurant, you will be amazed with the offering! We have been here 4 times within a month, as the food was so good, and very reasonably priced. It's also BYO.
LOVE the spicy eggplant, sushi platter, and vege gyoza. I've had better agedashi tofu and kaarage chicken and wasn't mad about the wagyu beef dishes. The main meal platters are around $26 and were enough for 4 of us to share. Having been there so many times in a short period, I would now say that the fish and vegetarian dishes are the stars of the menu. Definitely will be back for more. Recommend booking as it gets really busy.

Wa so good !. I came to eat here about 5 times and was never disappointed.
Always fresh and clean food.
The best japanese in bondi junction in my opinion.

Wa Hah!. Decor: Unusual. Antique furniture in what could be your Grandmother's front room. Bicycle hanging off the wall

Food: Excellent. Beautifully presented and very fresh. Salads are delicious. Good choice of cooked dishes as well as an array of sushi and sashimi

Service: Sweet and friendly

Suitable for : Everyone

Value for Money: Excellent. 30% discount at lunchtime

Would we go back? Definitely

Clean, generous, staff are super sweet and thoughtful. Food is tasty and potions are generous. The back garden is lovely but they need to get rid of the giant projection screen. Lovely restaurant otherwise.

Stick with tap water!. The food was lovely, the portion sizes we very generous, although I found it quite difficult to get the staffs attention when we were ready to order.
When I went to pay the bill, I saw that the bill was quite expensive for what we had. When I looked at the itemized bill, I saw that they had charged me $10 for a bottle of mount Franklin sparkling water... I had ordered two because in the menu, the sparkling water says it's $4 each... When I pointed this out to the waitress she giggled and said "oh, maybe we should change that". I was not impressed!!! If I'd known I was paying $20 for two bottles of water I would have drank tap water!!!
Am very disappointed as we really did enjoy the food and probably wont be going back again!

Great restaurant.. my wife and I have enjoyed the food and service!

FANTASTIC CHEERFUL and CHEAP, shame about the MASSIVE projection screen ruining everything. There used to be a lovely covered courtyard out the back of this wonderful, cheap, delicious restaurant, but for some reason they have put up a giant projection screen which plays footage of random things, so due to the small space, you are basically sitting in the film. It is just AWFUL. There are no longer the quaint candles and calm space, instead, flickering images and no lighting. We tried to ask the reasoning behind such an ill advised and no doubt costly addition, but the language barrier prevented us from getting to the bottom of it, or being able to diplomatically suggest they TURN IT OFF. Like eating in a front window of a TV store.
