Review Gelbison Pizzeria Ristorante Italiano - Bondi

Dov Frazer
Decent Italian overall. The portions are quite small but the prices are also quite reasonable so the prices and portions match. Our party of 4 had 2 pizza and 2 pastas. The pizza eaters were happy and one of the pasta eaters had a smile. My veggie lasagne was super bland so I would choose something else

Great Italian food with friendly service and lively environment. Amazing pizza and pasta, especially the seafood options. The staff bring more water without having to ask and are very responsive to customers needs. The best Italian in Bondi.

I'm an uber driver and they were very rude to me. They had the order ready for a long time, but the lady at the counter refused to acknowledge me even though I waited at the back of the line got to the front and waited for another 10 minutes.

Visited Gelbison quite a few times. Liked most of their dishes , marinara risotto, lasgana etc. Friendly staff and prompt service. Seems to be a popular place with the locals.

Excellent Italian. The portions are very large, so be advised. The chicken parm was excellent and nice an light as it is not breaded. Mussels were outstanding. Wait staff are very attentive and gave excellent recommendations.

Casual Italian eatery just off of Bondi beach! Outdoor seating available with sea views & indoor seating as well. The restaurant is BYOB at $4pp or there is a selection of beer and wine available to purchase by the glass. There is a large food menu with pizzas, pastas (you choose which style of pasta you would like with your sauce) meats and sides. The food was very tasty and large portions. The reason I am only giving 3 stars is because the service was verrryyyy slowww! We waited a good 30 minutes to order food and when it arrived it was simply put on the table and they walked straight away without asking if we needed anything else. No split bills

Really bad experience and rubbish service and restaurant. One of the waitress, who is responsible for ordering last night in this restaurant, is impolite, ignorant. I even doubt that she is a racist because she seems to be friendly to some local people, but just ignored my order even my order is the first and I said many times "excuse me" but she ignored me, and after ten minutes I showed to her my order but without even a singe word response. In addition she allowed other people to jump in line instead of dealing with my order first. I finally cancelled my order and will share this bad experience across my community and also broadcasting across social media. In this restaurant, no social distancing, lots of people did not wear mask including their staff, no sense of social responsibility.

We came here after spending the day at the beach, and really enjoyed the family-style friendly and cozy vibe of the place. We split a salad and 3 pizzas among the 5 of us (came down to ~$25 pp) which was a pretty reasonable. They have a large pizza menu, and you are bound to find something that you like.

Gelbison is an old-school pizzeria in Bondi Beach. The unassuming eatery features an outdoor dining area facing the main street and a simple dining room fitted with wooden furniture and large framed paintings.

My mate and I ordered a calabrese pizza and a fettuccine monte mare. The thin-crusted pizza has a thick edge and supports the ingredients firmly so that it does not falls out the pizza easily. However, the flavours are not exciting and probably too ordinary.

Service is extremely slow even though the pizzeria is mostly empty on week nights. We waited almost an hour for our fettuccine which never arrived. So, we left for our next appointment.

Always our first meal on our frequent visits to Sydney, but something went wrong tonight. It was still quiet when we got there around 6.30, but the menus were slapped down on our unwiped table....no welcome, no water but a glass of Cab Sauvignon that was no longer fresh. The food was good, but my wife had finished her canelloni by the time my gnocchi arrived....and that was just ungraciously plonked in front of me with no offer of black pepper or Parmesan.....and, when requested, the black pepper was again ungraciously supplied.
The restaurant realised that they’d messed up and offered us a free gelato or coffee -which we declined— and did then knock 20% off the bill.....so they did behave well to that extent. But what we really wanted was the usual friendly and efficient service. However we do acknowledge that this was the first misfire in many years....but why when the place was not even busy? Come on guys; you can do better than this!

Gelbison has been serving good hearty Italian food almost on top of Bondi Beach for many years now. It's earned an enviable reputation for quality in a nice homey environment. We dropped in to see for ourselves. It's a smallish place with a nice al fresco area out the front and a larger inside room.

Gelbison has one of the best pizza’s at Bondi. Their location is pretty cool and they have a lot of variety for vegetarians and vegans. The Santa Lucia Pizza was such a delight to have!

Based on a craving for Pizza & Zomato reviews we took our out of town visitors to this place. It was packed but they squeezed us in. The restaurant was no frills decor with a lively atmosphere. We ordered bruschetta to start & automatically they offered to amend the serve to accomodate our party of 4. We shared 2 large pizzas between the 3 adults & 1 child. The pizzas were delicious - we love Hawaiin & this didn't disappoint. The addition of oregano gave it a nice life. We also had the calabrese which was delicious. The bases were thin but not too thin, crispy yet still a nice fluffiness. The service was good & meals came out in good time. We live in Coogee and we will definitely be back to this cheap & cheerful pizzeria. This time we'll book ahead for a coveted table out the front! Definitely recommend.

A Bondi hidden gem that serves amazing traditional southern Italian food. This place is usually crazy busy so be patient and try and book yourself ahead of the cue. They are very good at remembering regular customers and their orders and treat you like you're apart of their family. Probably one of the only restaurants left that allow you to chop and change or make your own dish ... Just don't ask for ketchup or BBQ sauce, it doesn't exist.

Very tasty pizzas which I and the kids enjoyed. The Wife ordered for arabiata spaghetti and that was very delicious too. The garlic bread portions were filling and tasted good too. The white wine we ordered was not up to the mark and unsure what that brand was to caution all 😀. They made the large pizza as half and half with two Flavours and that with a couple of starters and 3 drinks costed less than 80 AUD. Will visit this place again.
La Petite Bobo
This has to be one of the only good quality Italian restaurants that are still reasonably priced in the East. Gelbisons never disappoints for a good, cheap meal. Although the service is always sketchy, i guess it doesn't matter when you churn out food this good!

A family favourite for years now, and years to come. I have been here countless times and never had a bad meal. The zuppa di cozze mussels are a must.

Great pizza and mussels (had the Zuppa Di Cozze - cooked with garlic, chilli, parsley, white wine and Napoletana sauce). The bread that accompanied the mussels were pretty average but was hungry so ate it anyway. Great portion for entree size.
Pizza was amazing!!

For a post-exam submission celebratory feed, we headed to Bondi Beach, as despite the cloudy weather, good Italian food was beckoning at Gelibson!. We started with a serve of garlic bread, which was buttery and very flavoursome, and served on crusty ciabatta bread! I ordered the Fettuccine Boscaiola, which was cooked in a cream sauce with mushrooms and ham. It was absolutely delicious, and lovely and rich, with large pieces of ham and deliciously tender mushrooms. I was glad I opted for the entree size though, as it was quite a generous serve, so their items are perfect for sharing.

Do not go here,. - stale bread
- terrible wine
- "garlic bread" tasted like stale bread with heaps of margarine and salt. no garlic
- the "parmesan cheese" on my rocket salad tasted like plastic. - service is friendly enough but the food is not good. - PIZZA is ok Dear owner, have a chat with your kitchen staff, food is not longer good. Good luck. Thanks

Terrible. Ordered a pizza, pasta and a can of drink which came to just shy of $50, should be amazing at that price??? My partner enjoyed his pizza only because he was hungry but pasta they sent was incorrect. So called Suppertime and they sent the correct one. Let me just say for a couple of $ I could have whipped up a better pasta with my eyes closed. The one they sent me just had a few strips of onion and ham and a very basic sauce you could buy a better bottled sauce from Aldi. Then mine arrived and had four small prawns and mushrooms I think they call it the Monto e Mare, pink sauce, no just a watery mess, worst takeaway ever. Don't bother with this place if you want pasta, they have no idea. Never again, what a rip off!

Don't go there!. We booked a table of 30 guests at Gelbisons. While the food wasnt too bad, the owner & staff were rude, unnatentive and unhelpful at the best of times.

Summary: Rude staff, terrible communication, misleading pricing

We were advised over the phone that there was minimum spend of $35.00 per head on food and drinks. Confirmed many times that the spend could be on food and drinks together as long as it came to over $35.00 no extra would be charged. Throughout the meal a waitress handed carelessly an almost boiling pasta dish to one of our guests and in doing so tipped half the bowl over her, then turned and walked away. No waiter came to help clean up and no apology was made.

At the end of the meal when we got the bill, we were charged $35.00 per/head with all drinks added on top. Everybody had ordered a main (around $20.00) and a few drinks to bring their spend above the $35.00 minimum, however at the end we were told it was $35.00 for food and drinks ***but not alcoholic drinks***. Allthrough the owner agreed that he said over the phone "food and drinks" he advised that it was obvious that it didnt include alcoholic drinks (which is not the case). After explaining that i had relayed the information as it was given to me over the phone and i was now out of pocket for over $200 odd dollars no apology was made and no attempt to ease the monatery burden was made.

For a booking that came to almost $1300.00 we most definately didnt recieve our value for money. All 30 of us will never go back i'd advise taking your business to a venue that cares about their customers satisfaction instead of the money in their pocket.

Will we go again? Yes, definitely not homestyle Italian food. I haven’t eaten much of this type before. Although we have in our list a couple of apparently good authentic Italian food.

Gelibsons is a Bondi Institution which was firing up the wood fire oven long before the organic-living hipsters migrated to the sunny shores of the east. The restaurant is loved by locals and families, because it is cheap, easy and BYO, perfect for a mid-week dinner or a party with pigs. The pizzas are perfect – thin base and minimal ingredients done well and paired perfectly. My go-to is the Valese pizza which is topped with sundried tomatoes, artichokes and sliced of cured ham rolled on top. Get to Gelbisons, you won’t regret it!

Terrible wine. Great pizza. The wine here is a NO NO! somehow tastes TERRIBLE! Get a coke instead. ha!
The mussles are delicious! BUT, get the entree size because the MAIN size is exactly the SAME as entree..... VERY CHEEKY OF THEM...!

The PIZZA IS AMAZING!
Service is crap and if you make a reservation THEY DO NOT HONOUR SO BE PREPARED TO WAIT FOR A TABLE ANYWAYS!

My partner and I really enjoyed our pasta dishes. The menu had a decent selection. However, when I went to pay for our meal I came across a small paper sign attached to the register saying "cash only". I don't understand why a RESTAURANT in this day and age would not accept card. It was extremely inconvenient having to search the area to find an ATM. I probably should have paid closer attention to the description on this site.

Bad house wine. House wines are supposed to be light and easy instead of a punch in the face awful. Fantastic pizza expensive awful house wine. No excuses in this country to have that.

Terrible customer service, pizza not very good. The place doesn't look very interesting but it would be ok if the pizza was amazing. And it was not! The ingredients were not fresh at all, never seen ham chopped in small pieces on italian pizza, just on 2$ pizza from the supermarket, and also, our pizza was burnt.

Waitress was terrible, she definitely doesn't like her job, she threw the menu on our table, no smile, no kind word. Even thought the other waitresses looked to be quite nice.

Definitely not coming again.

Nicest pizza in Bondi, we love going here. Be prepared to wait for a table but I assure you it will be worth the wait.

Chop81. Wasn't too impressed with the Suppertime delivery from Galbison's last weekend...

For $92 I got;
*one very cold and soggy cabonara pasta
*soggy limp side salad
*COLD mussels
*Dry and overcooked chicken Cacciatoria with soggy vegetables on the side.

It's just a total rip off for the quality and quantity we received an hour and a half after placing the order. I do not recommend getting this food delivered.
Paella World
Thin crust, warm authentic service, good range of pastas - will definitely return

Perfected pizza base. My go to for a cheap dinner or takeaway pizza. Family run, been around forever and they have perfected the pizza base - thin, crispy and a little bit chewy. Family run, always busy and BYO, it ticks all my boxes!

The food looked great, it is a pity I never had a chance to try it. Through really bad service, we reluctantly left as our child needed to eat and we could not wait longer than 20 minutes past our reservation time. They kept saying 10 minutes. The main man organizing the tables would not address me directly - he kept referring to me as 'the girl' in third person, which was really strange. And no one apologised for the delay - as though a wait was expected.

In love with their risotto. This place have no atmosphere but the food is good. They have a very nice risotto marinara and the pizza is ok. Good value!

Didn't meet expectations. Arrived at around 7pm after a quick search around the Bondi area. Looked busy so presumed that food and service would be good!

Menu is massive so there is plenty to choose from however for such a small place I think this meant the food suffered as a result! One meal was a 'nick special' which was a simple pizza with capsicum, onion, tomato, cheese and Italian sausage topping, this was nice. My partner chose the bruschetta pizza special. As it was a special you would imagine the tomato, garlic and basil topping to be fresh but the mix had obviously been kept in the fridge for an excessive amount of time. Not only was it freezing cold on top of a warm thin pizza base but the tomato was over ripened, soft, mushy and had lost all of it's taste. It was edible but an unpleasant experience. We also ordered a bottle of soft drink (solo) at a cost of almost $10 only to find it was flat, had bits floating around in the bottle, tasted foul and the date stamped on the side was dated a year previously. We complained and were provided with a replacement, this was better as it was only 4 months past the best before date but it was still flat and had lost its taste. Overall we were expecting much much more but ended up being left disappointed. Staff were friendly but if they maybe concentrated on some smaller key dishes rather than such a broad menu, the food quality would improve and the saving on ingredients would mean they could afford some drinks which were in date.

Good. Love this place..

Packed, noisy and busy for a reason. This place is a Bondi institution. I've been going here for 22 years and it's as good as it was in 1989. Recommend the Special Garlic Bread, the Italian salad, the Spaghetti Con Vongole and Puttanesca. And the Gorgonzola pasta.

Bar Reggio's beachside cousin. Having moved to Bondi from Darlinghurst I miss Bar Reggio. We were seated straight away but we did arrive after 8pm so it probably wasn't as busy as usual. It was BYO and corkage was $4 (not sure if $2 pp or $4/bottle). We ordered the Fusseli with crab and rocket in tomato pasta sauce ($28) and a large supreme pizza ($20-$21) to share between two. The pasta had satisfying chunks of crab and pizza a lovely thin base (and not as oily as Reggios). The next time though I'd go for a more classic Italian pizza topping. Along with a surprisingly big double espresso ($4) the bill was just $58. It's a tiny bit pricey than Reggios but for the location, great food and buzzy atmosphere it's perfect for a cheap and cheerful dinner out.
Bondi Local
Good Italian, terrible service.... The food here is good cheap Italian food, and always quite busy. I'm a local and been here several times, although honestly I always find the service terrible. I'm a pretty easy going guy, although it's almost laughable how every time I come here something will go wrong. Probably the worst example was when a rushed waitress, as they all are, was cleaning a table and spilt a whole glass of red wine down the back of my chair!!! Often I have made a booking before I arrive, and have had arguments about having made a booking. Very disorganized on entry, but perhaps part of the charm. Honestly, I wouldn't bother booking a table, because when I do they simply pretend you didn't call anyway. I would be very surprised if anyone walks out of Gelbison's remarking on the service...

(interesting note: I wrote this review before checking other reviews and it was not surprising that many comment on the poor service)

It seems to me that everyone puts up with the terrible service because the food is actually very good Ital food, and not too exxy. I think this place almost succeeds because the food is good in spite of the service!! I think because it's cheaper, it attracts a certain crowd (think backpackers and hard-up surfers) that would never tip, so the service is consistently lousy. Although the food is good, I would prefer to pay more to go to Pompeii's or Bondi Trat and have a better experience...

Enjoy!

Rude and very unhelpful with our child. Some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Used to be a regular but not any more.
Gaylekirkbride
Awful service. Went last night, food was OK (but not as good as other local restaurants). Service was awful, our waitress was rude and even rolled her eyes when we chased our orders (which were very slow), our drinks orders were forgotten on more than one occasion and overall very disappointed.
Phil Hurrell
As per many- pizza is very good as are mussles. Meat dishes were however disapponting. Service could use improvement. This place can be very crowded - if you can't get table- don't worry - get take out pizza and go sit on the beach!
