Review Bondi Cosmo - Bondi

I must say this is the BEST hungrier food I have had. The ladies are super friendly. It's a best place for friends and family to celebrate or get-together. I regret that I didn't try the dessert because all of them are sooooooo yummy. I was up to my throat. Definitely will come back~~~ 10 stars recommended And don't forget to reserve your table

I was finally able to take my Australian family to this Hungarian 🇭🇺 restaurant and we just loved it 🍲😋❤️ the food is delicious and the staff very friendly. We felt the European warmth and I felt home 😍. We can just recommend the place and we will go back 😋🥳 Köszönjük 🙏🏽

Our food at Bondi Cosmo was excellent. The tender beef in horseradish sauce served with bread dumplings is highly recommended. That sauce is absolutely delicious. The chestnut puree with fresh whipped cream was also very tasty and a perfect way to end the meal.

Let me tell you, this was the first time I tried Hungarian food and it was a breathtaking experience. The goulash is very tasty and great for a cold evening, and the Stroganoff was an outstanding dish. The atmosphere is also marvelous and the service was very friendly. A must-go in Sydney for foodies!

First time for us to try Hungarian food and we’re so glad it was here. Delicious food, accommodating staff, and relaxing atmosphere. We’ll definitely come back!

Amazing European food with friendly staff who look after you. Great drinks list. Hungarian/Bavarian cuisine that is unusual and delicious!

The food came out extremely fast. The meats were cooked well; my veal was so soft it simply fell apart in my mouth and our deserts were delicious. It would have been great with a little better ambience- better music (that we could hear) or candles, customer service was good, not great. Overall, a nice dinner

Going to Bondi from the Hills area, on a cold & wet Saturday night to a restaurant I'd never heard of. The evening, a Groupon voucher gift for Christmas. Well what a delight this evening was! The waitress was exceptional, very friendly & efficient. The food was delicious & served quite quickly. Thank you for a wonderful night!!

Went there with my boyfriend with a groupon voucher and it was so good! The soup entree was very tasty and very good size for an entree. For the main i recommend the stuffed cabagge and then for desert we had pancake! Not disapointed at all. Very nice deal :)

We bought a Groupon voucher, meal for 2. After ordering 2 different options of soups, mains and desserts, we agreed on what we liked the most: bean soup, veal bakonyi mushroom with nockerl (main) and somloi galuska (dessert). Next time we'll come with an emptier stomach 😋

FOOD TYPE

Hungarian/Eastern Euro

FOOD QUALITY

Four of us dined midweek in February. We had purchased a Groupon voucher for $115, which entitled each of us to a glass of house wine, an entree, a main course and a dessert. No need to share with this deal. For my entree, I chose the bruschetta, with tomato, bocconcini, basil and pesto. It was two generous slices of fresh sourdough bread, lightly toasted and overflowing with ripe tomato and cheese and spruced up with the pesto and basil. A great way to start. My friends all opted for the famous matzo dumpling soup, which they enjoyed. For my main I chose the veal goulash with nockerl (dumplings). The others went for the stuffed cabbage rolls, the fillet steak with fried onions and our vegetarian friend chose the crumbed mushrooms with rice and chips. My veal was tender and tasty, with a nice red wine flavour and perfectly complemented with the soft dumplings. My friend said his steak was too raw in the middle and too cooked on the outer, and I noticed that he didn’t touch his onion rings. Apart from that, no other complaints. The stuffed cabbage was served with a dollop of creamy white sauce. For dessert I choose the Gundel pancake as did our vegetarian friend. The others choose the “floating island”, (vanilla custard with meringues and roasted almonds) and a chestnut puree with cream. I enjoyed my pancake with its fluffy outer texture, stuffed full of crushed almonds and a kind of rum and raisin puree. The others seemed a bit lukewarm with what they had. I tried the chestnut puree but wasn’t impressed and would definitely stick to the tried and tested Gundel pancake for dessert. After all, it’s the most famous of all Hungarian desserts. Overall, I was happy with my food. The serving sizes were generous and I liked the presentation on classic white crockery.

ATMOSPHERE
This place is a favourite with the ageing eastern European set, so consequently, the ambience is quiet and subdued. But it's just perfect for a relaxed and laid back evening with friends. When we arrived at 7pm, it was fairly empty but it did fill up and by the time we left, there was a respectable turnout. You can sit indoors or outdoors. We choose to sit indoors near a window. The interior decor has been brightened up since we were last year a few years ago and now sports a cheerful orange colour tone, although the basic layout, with the bar-counter at the back, hasn’t changed. The honey-coloured wooden furniture, red and white cushions and strong down lights add to the bright and homely atmosphere.

SERVICE

Service from our Hungarian waitress (how’s that for authenticity!) was polite and efficient. This lady is clearly experienced and well trained because everything ran smoothly the whole evening. Our booked table was ready and waiting for us in a good spot near the window. Orders were taken quickly and drinks and food came out promptly and in the correct order.

COMFORT

Although it was a hot night, the air con kept us cool. Chairs are firm, and the couches on the wall side (for the ladies of course) were soft and comfortable. Our well-organised waitress made sure that dishes were cleared after each course, so we had no problems in fitting all the current meals on the wooden table.

MENU
Menu is easy to follow with its simple black and white format. The sheets are enclosed in plastic to keep them clean and hygienic and the whole structure is bound up in a sturdy black leather binder. The dessert menu is on a separate sheet, also enclosed in plastic laminate.

TOILETS
Toilets are no trouble to find at the back, behind the bar counter. There are separate male and female ones and they’re reasonably clean and well stocked.

ACOUSTICS

As mentioned, the crowd here tends to be quite elderly or middle-aged, so consequently, it proved to be a quiet venue and we had no trouble conversing, despite the wooden floors without carpets and the lack of any sound absorbers.

COST

Our Groupon voucher for $115 for four people was outstanding value for money in these awful economic times, when even a takeaway coffee in Sydney can now put you back $4.

BOOKING
This place does seem to have a reasonably loyal following amongst the locals, and despite it being a weeknight, it was still about three quarters full. I would therefore recommend booking, especially for weekend dining.

PARKING/ACCESS
Surprisingly for Bondi Road, parking at this end (opp Kemeny’s) isn’t too much of a hassle and we easily found a spot just around the corner in Wellington Street, where restrictions end at 6.00pm. My friend told me about a car park nearby, as another option, perhaps some will know this.

SUMMARY

Of the four of us, I enjoyed the evening the most. I found the food to be fresh, filling and tasty. Service was flawless and I liked the calm, laid back and relaxed atmosphere. Parking is easy and at a tad under $30 a head for a glass of wine and a three course meal (where you can pretty much choose anything off the menu), is hard to beat.

RECOMMENDATION

The Hungarian veal goulash seemed the best of the main courses and for dessert it’s a no-contest, with the Gundel pancake winning hands down against the other choices.

Restaurant has seriously improved since new Chef and owner took over. You can actually get real Hungarian Palinka here (best liquor ever). Give this place a go cause it has changed for the better I can tell you.

Service is quick, food came out fast when we ordered (and was busy night).
Highly recommend.

On Holiday staying nearby. I think the place is great and the service fantastic. Highly recommend if you feel like a full hearty meal. Feels owner driven.
Been there twice for dinner and will go again.

Over priced, poor service, poor atmosphere. Probably the worst place to eat in Bondi. Overpriced pub food. It didn't taste bad but it was VERY basic pub style food. The waiter was not polite at all and the atmosphere was terrible. we were rushed out at the end because they wanted to close. The bill for 2 came to $98 and all things considered it was a HUGE waste of money. If you are considering going here DON'T .. Go to one of many of Bondi's decent places.

Best taste of Hungary. We come here few times a week to enjoy tasty Hungarian dinner. We often have Vienna schnitzel with parsley potato or just with a nice salad to stay nice and lean. (Of course that is just propaganda.)

The service matches the quality of the food, you can get your meal usually in a few minutes even when they are busy.

Prices are very reasonable.(In the middle of the road.)

For a good time the Bondi Cosmo is warmly recommended, not only for dinner but breakfast and lunch as well.

So expensive. Food isn't fantastic and its very expensive.

Bondi Cosmo is a joint very popular with the Eastern European locals and for anyone with a penchant for wholesome Hungarian stodge like roast duck, schnitzel, goulash or anything heavy on the carbs

Horrible food, horrible service. Very reluctant to write this but the way my girlfriend were treated this morning was nothing short of disgraceful. Sort it out soon please as location is so good.

Over priced awful food. Our party of 4 were looking forward to enjoying Hungarian cuisine. What a disappointment!

The entrees were ordinary. My goulash had a strange taste that I put down to my lack of knowledge of Hungarian food. the others were OK but pricy.

The mains were awful. One of our party sent his dumplings back - they were cold in the middle. My duck was dry and inedible on a bed of lumpy mashed potato - worst I have tasted. My wife's salmon was overcooked and tasteless. Awful

Service was desultory. No explanations of meals, water ran dry and not replaced. We only saw the waiter when he delivered our meals.

I paid our bill & I was asked if I wanted to leave a tip. For what??!!

Never again.

Food very average, and AWFUL service.. Never again, waiter very rude, food - nothing special.

Absolutely Devine! Went on a Friday night, excellent service, attentive without being intrusive. The meal was amazing. Just the simple vegetable soup starter was a reason to go back. I don't know what they put in it, but do yourself a favor, try it. The mains were perfect, even the side salad was great. And the desserts. Oh. My. God. I could quite happily get very fat eating those desserts. 6 out of 5 stars. Seriously, try the soup.

A Restaurant to visit. Bondi Cosmo is a Restaurant which I am always happy to go to with my Family and my Friends. So far any dish we have had was never disappointing. The service has been always good and the portions of the food perfect.
I can truly recommend it to everybody.

Great place. I have to say that I eat here at least once a week and sometimes 2-3 times a week. The food is always great, the service is friendly and accommodating. I eat here with my parents, my children and also with friends.
The other day I ate the Stuffed capsicum for the first time, it tasted just like my grandmother used to make me....it was amazing and is one of my new favourite dishes at Bondi Cosmo.
Overall, highly recommend this establishment to everyone.
Bon Apetite :)

Too good to ignore. I have never written a review before despite having eaten at restaurants regularly all over the world for over 40 years. However, when I read the review on Bondi Cosmo titled "shocking food - awful service" I couldn't sit by and let that pass. To ignore that judgement would be an injustice to the wonderful people there who work hard to present consistently great food at very reasonable prices. Over the last 7 years or so I've eaten there about 25 times. Not once have I or anybody I was with had a negative word to say and that includes those who are not the easiest to please. I'll be back and am looking forward to my next visit.

MY HOME AWAY HOME KITCHEN. I love going there and eat. Since Suzie and Gabor open the restaurant I closed my kitchen at home. I don't cook no more.No need to.I eat there every day. Best food with very good price.Suzie carefully handpicked her chef's with over 30 years experiences of a Hungarian cuisine as well as Australian.A real taste of home made cooking which I have not find anywhere else but at Bondi Cosmo Restaurant. The portion are big and filling. If you want to eat a best Hungarian food and have a great time I highly recommend to try out Bondi Cosmo.

Terrific service !!!. I had dinner at Bondi Cosmo Saturday night 30 Aug 2013 with my family. What outstanding service!!! The food taste felt like in Budapest.

My farther and all family members are agreed. This is the pace to have a quality meal with reasonable price. . Very details explanation by the waiter and later we find out he is the owner. Costumer Focus orientation with pleasant professional manner. Attentive to details and quality.

Terrific night. Thank you Bondi Cosmo the memorable night. Good presentation and well spoken waiter later i find out ( the owner )lovely
Hungarian guy.

A our dining experience means that everything and everyone meets in perfect harmony. Sugar and salt, sweet and sour.

Benjamin Goldmayer

Shocking food. awful service. I am sorry I don't keep up with urban spoon. If I did and saw the latest review I would never come here. Never.

I was part of a group of 20 who ate here on 31 Aug.

Most mains are $23, so naturally we all thought that portions were similar. How wrong we were!!!!!!!!

I had the cabbage rolls. The portion was the size of a McDonald's Junior Burger. And that included the stale piece of bread they added to the dish to fill me up. When I asked if I was given a entree size instead of a main, I was met with a rude look.

One woman asked for duck, $26. Twice it was sent back for being undercooked. As was a chicken breast.

Corkage is $3 per person.

The host of our party brought a cake and we were charged between $2 and $5 per person for the plate, depending on who you asked.

Two people could not finish their meals. Not because they were large meals but because they were in a rush to go elsewhere. They were levied $1 per person for a doggie bad. One declined saying the food wasn't worth $1.

Even for those whose mains were a decent size, they were tasteless.

And we were made to wait for over an hour for the food so that smaller tables that came after us could be waited on and served. The strategy was to make the place look busy as we took up 30% of the total available seats.

Everything here is horrible.

If you want to break up with someone come here.
If the poor service doesn't kill your relationship the poor food would.

They deserve to go out of business and I for one will pray on Sunday for this.

DO NOT GO!!! So rude!!! Had a voucher that clearly says choose three deserts. When I asked about my choices, I was told I had no choice and they will give me one. When I showed the terms in voucher, he refused to serve me any desert. I had already paid! Then, he suddenly spoke no English. AWFUL service!!! Mortified! Food was fine but nothing special. Never again!!!!!!

Don't buy groupon vouchers - they won't honor them!. My score here is low due to the experience i have just encountered. I have dined here often in the past and was excited to buy a couple of groupon vouchers when I saw them available for this restaurant as it offered a banquet which we have never had nor is on the menu. It took 6 weeks before he would take my first booking constantly saying he had no room for voucher users. One day when I called to book he said no room and when I drove past there were only 2 tables occupied!! I found it impossible to book the second voucher as the only day he would give me was a Tuesday in 2 weeks time! The voucher lapsed and he refused to extend it or refund it even though he caused the unavailability. For a regular customer - this guy has now lost my business due to his sheer pettiness. I'd much rather a good Hungarian meal at 21 any day over this place! Don't buy vouchers for this place ever!!!!

Children not welcome. We were told our children were not welcome.

Having bought a voucher on cudo.com.au we attempted to book a table. We were told our twin 9 month old boys would take up too much space that could otherwise be filled with paying customers.

Getting out with twin babies is not easy, and to be told we're not welcome is appalling.
Andy
Very disappointing. My girlfriend and I had a groupon deal for Bondi Cosmo and were looking forward to the 10 course feast - unfortunately, from the minute we walked in the waiter was unhelpful and rude - not explaining the various dishes as they came out, only serving 8 courses and even trying to charge extra when we asked for a red wine rather than white (where was that in the fine print?). No complaints with the food - it was standard but not spectacular - but the service and hospitality was well below average.
Eat Love Move
Highly recommend the Hortobagyi - soft delicious crepe filled with tender chicken, covered in a paprika sauce. I made a special request for a personalised Hungarian dessert and it couldn't have been done more professionally! Excellent lunch dining experience to remember. All dishes tasted authentically homemade. Will be back again for sure!

Filling!. I used a Scoopon last night here for a 10 course Hungarian Feast. It certainly was a feast, we were both suitably stuffed afterwards!

To start we were presented with a hearthy potato soup which I loved, crumbed mushrooms, and toasted bread with a lovely cheese / paprika / garlic spread.

The main event was then a selection of well sized dishes:
A very tasty chicken dish with rice, veal goulash with dumplings, and our favourite the pork dish with garlic potatoes (so good!). These were served beside the 7th dish, which was a standard salad.

Last up were the 3 desert plates. We were pretty full at this stage so did not tackle much of the least favourite which was some sort of vanilla custard with a floating meringue. The chocolate cake was our favourite and we finished that!! There was also a nice pancake filled with strawberry jam. The jam was probably a little too sweet for us, but still enjoyable.

Overall this place was good honest east European food. Not fancy or pretentious, just very tasty.
