Review Ryu - Bondi

Alexandra Dean
Great quality for price in Australia. The sushi rice is perfectly cooked and flavoured everytime. The spice salmon is the best. My only complaint is I wish they were open for dinner more nights!

We tried a variety of entrees and mains. Some items were fairly expensive considering this is a very casual restaurant, however serving sizes were usually generous. The food was good enough for us, so we will return and try some other dishes.

This review is solely for food quality and taste nothing to do with service which was good. I ordered salmon teriyaki bento. Salmon was cut in tiny slices cooked together with veggies ala chinesse/korean style chop suey. Way too sweet, not enough flavour of the actual meat. The rest of the bento are pretty mediocre as well, I was a struggle eating the food. For $28/$29 a portion this is unacceptable. The only tasty bit in that Bento was the agedashi tofu. The one that got cooked correctly. I know that renting place in Bondi might cost some, but cutting corner on quality? I rather have less quantity food with better taste.

Fairly standard “a” typical conveyor belt joint. Food is not exceptional, and very much so over priced. But good for a quick bite.

Not a great experience. The food is edible but not tasty. The service is slow despite the large number of staff. Very busy at the weekend and lots of kids running wild while the parents focus on their food which is not the restaurant’s fault but it didn’t add to the experience.

The food here was average. I ordered chicken karaage as a meal and I expected to receive it in a bowl with rice but I just got chicken on a plate. I could have got that from KFC. There was also not a lot of variety on the train.

The experience was very disappointed for my first time eating here. Overprice for very basic, low quality sushi. Limited choice of sushi ( mostly fried food and mini rolls) . Bland and boring. We saw tempura prawn in 3 different types of rolls? Each plate is starting from $3.6 (orange) then to $4.9 (green), $5.8 (grey) etc. The grilled wagyu beef were chewy and tasted old. The Mozzarella shell was oily and heavy. My partner and I got very sick from eating here so be very considerated when dining here. Service was great but very slow. Our order took 15mins although it wasn't busy. I do not recommend this place at all because I am sure there are many other sushi train place with a more affordable price, better quality sushi and more amazing variety of types such as Hero Sushi, Hotaru, Rio etc.

Today was lovely. Hearty food and tasty. To be honest have been here a number of times before and never really rated it, but it was good today

We came here mainly for the sushi train. Most things need to be ordered from the menu. There was a good variety of sushi and sashimi to choose from, however I found the plates were not much different in price and some of the plates were a bit overpriced. Apart from that, it wasn’t a bad experience overall.

I quickly sneaked in for a quick bite while waiting for the Mrs..... one word can describe my experience - Yummy

I was surprised how good and tasty Ryu was.

Staff friendly, food fantastic - I couldn’t fault the dishes I had.

Will be back for round 2 - with the Mrs :)

-10

I give this place a minus 10. The service was just horrible. We waited in line for 5 minutes and were not attended to. The place was not even that busy but none of the staff wanted to seat us or the ppl behind us. When we were approached, ignorant staff tried to serve the people who were not in line??!! Appalled at this, I advised the staff that we were waiting in line first, and was abruptly interrupted by the rude staff shouting at us saying that she was busy and flustered etc. Absolutely no excuse to give to customers who did the right thing and waited for them patiently. Just a horrid experience in general. Will never return here again.

Came across Ryu when we were craving for a Japanese fix and it was incredible 😍 They do have a sushi train but we went straight ahead to their restaurant section. Loved their chicken kara-age, takoyaki, and their prawn cheese sushi (not sure if I got the name right) 😄 We also got their chicken katsudon bowls but it was a bit too savoury for us. Service was friendly and quick, hence I can't wait for round 2 in Ryu 👌

Not the best variety of sushi on offer but their udon is one of the best I've tried. There is a lot of beef for the beef udon and the flavours are great. The staff wasn't that attentive but still friendly.
Master Diner
Food delicious, service good. They have a 2 way radio system happening but it didn't stop the fact that I had to wait to order a drink for 10 minutes. The place is quite chaotic. I asked for a quiet table and the waiter said there isn't such a thing. Fair enough - we are in the middle of a 'beehive' of a mall. I would absolutely come back. The food was fresh and delicious. My only suggestion - more smiles and continuity of service. Other than that - great job team Ryu.

I've had a lot of nigiri, hand rolls, and sashimi in my life. This is the first sushi train-type restaurant I've been to. Very friendly and attentive staff had us seated immediately. The choices were plentiful. We ended up having salmon nigiri, small cucumber hand rolls, and seaweed salad, amongst other delights. They have some of the best pickled ginger I've eaten. Clean, and welcoming environment. A great place to go and relax before a movie.

Despite past reviews, seems like this place is under new management or big improvements have been made. Friendly attentive staff, generous portions and very clean. Would definitely go back!

At the top of Bondi junction this is a fancy looking version of a sushi train. Near the cinema, easy and i grab something eat in or take away. There wasn't much going around the train, but you can order to be made for you. I just got chicken and cucumber which was nice. You can also get udon or bento boxes etc if you eat at the tables.

For a quick and clean lunch after uni, we headed to Westfield Bondi Junction and decided to try Ryu, a sushi train on the top level. We arrived fairly late, so there wasn’t a lot of variety, but all of our favourites were on the train, so we picked 5 dishes! I had the Salmon and Avocado with both white and black rice. The white rice variety was delicious and had plenty of fillings, but the black rice variety was so tasty, as it was freshly made, and the rice was more flavoursome.

Lots of staff but very little service. Limited selection of sushi on the train but it was fresh and tasty when it arrived. Definitely better sushi options in Westfield Bondi Junction.

Beautiful setting, so welcoming and light. I absolutely love the appearance of the restaurant. As for the sushi- it was very fresh and tasty, made right on the spot infront of me. Staff were very attentive and catered to my needs and even custom made my sushi the way I liked it. Lovely, fresh food at a reasonable price. I'll definitely be going back here! Turns lunch into an occasion!

Probably the freshest sushi I have eaten since I've been here. Although the choices were fairly limited, I was super excited to see tofu sushi on the train! Mind you, we did done here very early at around 5pm so I'm sure the choices and variety would be better later in the night. Very generous portions and very well priced between $3-$7 plates on offer. I had a tofu sushi plate, salmon plate and chicken- each no more than $3.80 each. Very affordable with good, friendly service.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
I’m not a huge fan of shopping malls or sushi trains for that matter. Chaos and carnage always reigns, especially at this time of year. But up on Level 6 of Bondi Junction's Westfield you can find some respite. And while Ryu does have a train, you’ll find an oasis at the back where you can sit away from it all; the heaving mall partitioned by wooden latticework. Plus, they serve sake. In fact they've just launched their very own Sparkling Sake ($13.80/250ml) . It’s sweet and

Waste of time.. literally!. Came home out of the blue, food looked decent however when we sat down, dishes were over priced. Waited for an hour for my Bimbimbap. And my food just arrived. Tried my cousin's order of Katsu Don and it was too watery with the sauce which made the rice soggy and the chicken too. Wouldn't come back at all.

Worst Japanese I've ever had!. The food is greasy and heavy-handed - nothing like any Japanese I've ever had. I doubt there is one Japanese person working there which is reflected in the poor quality of the food. It's a shame as it is convenient and easy with kids but I will never go back. Complete disappointment as I never knew Japanese could be this bad!!

One of the worst in Sydney. This retaraunt has always had a terrible reputation, but decided to take the plunge, as sushi train in Bondi junction had a long line . I can say it certainly lived up to its billing. The sushi was actually worse than supermarket quality and the service was herrendous. I get the feeling that this place is terribly mismanaged, as most of the staff act like the customers aren't even there, it took me about 5 mins to search out a waitress to take my order and when she did, she actually got it wrong! The chefs were surly, rude and ignored their customers. Took 15 mins to get the bill, and when I went to pay, the cashier scuttled off for another 5 mins without explanation. Poor experience, and will not return here again.

Overpriced and disappointing,. Initially we had dinner booked elsewhere but due to bad weather, we thought we would give Ryu a visit as it was a Japanese restaurant we haven't tried that was closes to home and they have highchairs. What a mistake! I should have done my research before choosing this venue but we definitely know not go back.

The bento boxes we ordered looked nothing like their menu pictures, lots of rice and hardly any food. For $25 we definitely expected more. The only positive was their sushi rolls - the volcano and the spider rolls which were visually impressive on their plates and tasted good.

Some of the staff didn't understand English very well and since we were seated on the tables and not the sushi train counter, it was difficult to get their attention.

WHY DIDNT I CHECK THE REVIEWS OF THIS PLACE BEFORE COMING HERE???

really awful jap food and expensive for the portions you get. Ramen tasted like soapy water, tempura was 14 bucks with 2 prawns and 5 slivers of fried veg.

Try at your own risk

We arrived at this relatively uncrowded restaurant with our 3 young children and asked to sit at a table inside the restaurant instead of at the sushi train. The waitress pointed to a table outside of the restaurant and said we don't like children inside the restaurant because they leave a mess on the floor. I didn't see any signs out the front saying children aren't welcome, but if you were thinking of dining here, children aren't welcome. We walked out.

Wrong in every aspect. Where do I start, first time I have written a review but I feel its necessary in this case.... ordered a $35 sushi platter that has 15 pieces of sushi. It came on a plate just big enough to squeeze the 15 very small portions on, the idea with sushi is that it looks and tastes good, the presentation was terrible, no spacing or thought whatsoever gone into the plating. It did have 15 pieces but it was all salmon, tuna and prawn. You would think with 15 pieces that you would get some squid, a bit of white fish, some salmon roe etc. There was no ginger or wasabi and no decorative items, just a black plate with 15 very small pieces of sushi squeezed on with no imagination. Now the taste, the rice was very dry, I would say it was made quite some time ago, it also lacked acidity and flavour, so I think they skimped on the vinegar. I could not detect any wasabi in the sushi either, so it all tasted pretty bland.

We also ordered some udon noodles with Tempura. The broth of the noodles was very weak and watery, the tempura was OK, but only came with a thimble full of dipping sauce, normally tempura is served with a bowl of dipping source so you can immerse the piece into it.

All in All a very disappointing meal, they could really do with a Japanese chef and floor staff I feel.
