Review The Traditional Chip Shop - Bondi

Cristhina Boni Lavratti
The worst place I have ever been in Sydney, even in Australia. Do not be fooled by the appearance of the place. It's so expensive for the size of the fish, and both fish and chips were soaked in oil. And the calamari that my friend bought was even worst. Also, there's a horrible attendance, the very rude employee, with no desire to attend.

Monday, 3-Jul-2017. I ordered a $14.95 Fish Fillet Burger meal (see the 2 photos). I recommend just getting the burger if you're really in the mood, the higher cost for adding the fries and rings is not worth it. I wasn't too pleased with their food. It was all too oily. The chips seemed abnormal and the fried rings (not sure what they are exactly) were almost just fried crust. The burger was alright (in my opinion; see 2nd photo). For a restaurant that has "traditional" in its name, the food seemed very modern\'fast-foody'.

A windy summer’s evening blew us into the Traditional Chip Shop in Bondi; at the popular tourist beach for some sight-seeing after a swim in another beach, we were set upon capping off our day with a decent serve of seaside fish n chips. There’s a good reason for their reputation - the product is solid, really decently prepared battered fish, chunky chips and all the trimmings you could want, especially if you are a British ex-pat (real curry sauce! Mushy peas!). An excruciating wait even on a day when it wasn’t busy however. I appreciate the craft of frying to order to keep the integrity of the meal, but more legendary places in blighty manage to serve twice the numbers while still serving something to be proud of. Prices are the highest I’ve encountered for fish & chips by far.

The price value calculation was not good. Too oily batter. A baby cup of peas for $3. $53 for two. The haddock has a real fish flavour so 2 or 3 is fair. BTW I am an unreformed chipoholic so I say 3 for the chips and 2 for value. The retained oil in the “crispy” chips was frightening. Not good quality food.

It's a clean and cozy shop. I didn't have to wait too long for my Cheesy Chips, about 10+- minutes. It wasn't spectacular. Just cheese and chips. No salt or seasoning but the chips were fresh. Some of the chips were abit overly cooked though. It was all so-so.

I ended up in this place just by chance but it was one of the greatest fish and ship experiences I have had outside of Borough Market in London. I dare say that Bondi was better because of the OUT OF THIS WORLD cheese sauce. Honestly if Bondi was the same distance to me as NY city I would have gone there twice annually just for the fish and chips and the shrimp and chips. As a tourist I didn't find the price to be high and I liked the funk / rock star attitude of the women that served my wife and I. Place was a 10 on that Sunday evening last November PRO TIP: Once its all digested head straight for the Icebergs...pay the nominal access fee and and just relax after a good meal against a great backdrop with the pool, waves and all that.

The older lady behind the counter needs to learn about customer service. I made a simple request of scraps (batter bits off the fried food) to which she replied we don't have any. I asked for them to please make some a very simple quick easy job (I know I have worked in chippys back home) she then pulled her face n said we have just changed the oil.! Am sorry but making scraps for 1 person will not ruien your clean oil if you are frying food for other customers! This is not what a expected form a 'traditional fish n chip shop! Chips were slightly undercooked & the sausage quality wasn't great. However the gravy was yummy!

Lovely small fish and chips shop along the main beach strip at Bondi. Service was friendly and the store looked clean and modern. There is a few tables and benches for seating but why not enjoy your meal across the road so you can take one of Australias most iconic beaches. Oh I should mentioned the food which I rated high but the prices were a bit higher (just under $20 fish) than what I usual get fish for but this I would say is because you are paying for much higher quality produce.

We went in because the shop sign says it is authentic. It may be authentic UK fish and chips flavour but I have to say this is not something I like. Chips are worse than the ones I can buy from supermarket. For $24, there is only one piece of fish served and loads of chips. The cheesy chips was served with unmelted cheese. When we went to the counter and ask if we could have it heated so the cheese can melt, was told this is how it’s meant to be. If you want lemon with your fish and chips, you will also need to ask the staff. Way overpriced and very rude staff.

Definitely not worth the price you pay for. You can buy this for $8 elsewhere. Quality is not great, didn't finish food. Too much chips vs fish

Bunch of clowns.

Over priced for what it is, rude staff, they're always out of stock and don't even sell scampi anymore. Wouldn't be surprised if they shut up shop soon

The traditional chip shop is a fish and chips restaurant on Bondi beach that serves authentic style food very similar to that served at Fish and Chip shops in the UK and Ireland.

The restaurant is attractively decorated, and has a range of tables and chairs, both inside and outside in a covered patio. The range of menu items is large, going beyond fish to chicken, pies, sausages and a wide range of sauces.

Service is counter style. it is prompt, friendly and polite. I have visited twice this trip and once before, always around lunchtime.

I ordered Pie and Chips because I like British/Australian pies more than fish. Both were great.

This restaurant gets a 5 star from me because it is very authentic to my experiences growing up in England. Especially the chips are great - large, crispy but also soft and fluffy. British style chips are quite unlike chips that are served elsewhere. They are closer to what is called 'fresh-cut' fries in the USA, but still very different from that. That makes the food here very different from the inauthentic stuff that counts as 'British fish and chips' in most places I go.

I notice a few critical reviews here, and this reminds me of the dilemma for anyone trying to run an authentic foreign restaurant. The truth is that for a restaurant to survive, it has to have lots of local people who want the food to be truly authentic. But more often the route to success is to gradually adjust the food to be less authentic and to match local tastes and desires more closely. That is a difficult tension for a restaurant to resolve, and I notice that this chain has gone from several locations to just one in the few years since I was last in Australia.

Based on my life experience, this is a great, highly authentic restaurant, just like the UK and Irish notion of fish and chips. If that's what you want, I am sure you will be very happy.

Ordered Kids size fish bites and chips, it is disgraceful that the shop can even server such thing (photo tells all)! Complained, and some fresh chips was offered, good they did this. However, The excuses for the poor chippy was that the machine just cooks that way. But I want to say that even machine just cooks that type of chips (really bad) There are people in the shop whom can make sure the right stuff is server to your customer. We do comes to Bondi often, but will never come here again.

Not a big fan of the style of fish and chips here, but some might like it as it is apparently close to the version of fish and chips served in the UK.

Quite disappointing. Calamari was greasy and the batter was too thick and tasteless. Absolutely gross. The grilled salmon was too dry. Overpriced as well. The only upside of the restaurant is a good location and decent quality of gravy.

This was a different style of seafood, I ordered the calamari and chips (came with a drink with options of water, coke, 7up) and I added garlic mayo on the side. The calamari were huge but it was cooked differently, the batter was very soft and the squid was tender (not crispy/crunchy as everywhere else), the fries were huge cuts and was very soft (yet again, not used to it as every other chip joints make them crunchy), it was definitely safe for the kids to eat as both Calamari and chips were soft (a little crunchy on the corners of the chips) but you can tell it was 100% potatoes 👌 location was very nice, right in front of Bondi beach!

You aren't missing out on anything major. I like the texture of the batter but it's way too soaked in oil and the chips were soggy. I expected a lot more. :/

Expensive and no value for money.

Food was OK to disappointing and nothing special. Ordered quite a few meal items for the family and it is consistent that the soggy chips proportion (size) of each meal outweighed (by far) the main item of the meal. Noticed a lot of other customers left leaving a lot of the chips behind.

$14 for 9 small pieces of bread battered scampi meat. $7.50 for a piece of dried looking jumbo sausage (which was actually very small when served).

I understand the location is Bondi Beach, but with the amount I paid, you can add a bit more and you can get something much better in the nearby shops.
Food Is Really Great
The fish burger is good and the fish itself tastes ok but onions are kind of a random addition?? I would get it again since it’s a little less than $11 which is .. cheap considering it’s bondi beach.

The cheesy chips though ..... they are honestly just basic chips and half-microwaved clumped-together grated cheese. TBH don’t get that if you have the option ... also it’s packaged in a foil tray so, no offence but it looks like a frozen lasagna 😰
Frankiieshungrytummy
Not really sure how this place is traditional but anyway.
The chips were thick cut and topped with gravy and cheese.
Although you'd think there would be a bang of flavour, sadly there is not.
The drinks we ordered (one being from Ireland and the other, UK) were also quite disappointing in taste. Looks wise, they are a colorful novelty but what purpose would that serve other than to catch the eye?!
Have been here twice now in two years and nothing has changed so won't go back again.
The prices were also quite expensive for the amount you get.

After a quick trip to Bondi beach we were starving and stopped in for some chips with cheese. I was a bit disappointed as it was pretty tasteless.

Soggy chips says it all.

Fish didn't come with lemon. Hardly traditional. Not even drenching it in tomato sauce could save it.

I wouldn't recommend this place. Try the other two a few shops down on either side.

Should have read the reviews before eating here. I was curious about the place as work colleagues from the UK keep whining about how Aussie Fish and Chip shops use frozen chips while in the U.K. they use hand cut fresh chips. Ordered cod and chips. Fish was bland and chips were ok but nothing to write home about. What shocked me was that the vinegar on the table was heavily watered down and the salt in the shaker caked up and near impossible to get out. When I opened it I discovered they have mixed it with uncooked rice for some strange reason. Never again, give me an Aussie fish and chips shop any day over this crap.

I ordered the battered cod and chips. Fish was dry and overlooked, there was no lemon wedge for the fish, and chips were soggy. Tartare sauce needed to be paid for separately. Overall bad experience and I can't think of anything good about my meal. would not recommend.
