Review Indochine Vietnamese Restaurant - Box Hill

The Hanoi spring rolls are delicious~love the deep fried rice paper pastry but definitely can use a few more pieces of lettuce haha! Fried chicken pho had quite a generous serve of fried chicken~noodles were lovely and soft. The pork chop in special broken rice wasn't really marinated enough but overall was yum.

Used to love this place, something must’ve changed, perhaps new owner or kitchen staff? Served 2 cold curries that lacked flavour, too oily and felt like it had been poorly reheated from the fridge. Fried rice was also way too oily. We left most of our food uneaten, unfortunately we won’t return and it’s a shame. The 1 star is just for the coconut juice.

Vietnamese pancake looked great but unfortunately, vegetables inside the pancake were over cooked and soggy. I prefer raw carrot and bean sprouts - more like salad which I get in restaurants in Footscray. There were only a few other customers at the restaurant but I waited for a while for my food.

Never disappointed either food. Nice pho and pak mor

Very unsatisfied and unhappy with this place. Ordered the crepe and while everyone else had their food served, it seemed that my order was forgotten. Two waiters asked if we were waiting for anything, and the waiter who took my order completely forgot what I ordered and was surprised (he didn't write anything down). A 3rd waiter told us that there was only one wok so it takes 20 mins to make the crepe. Could've told us in advance, and what if 5 people ordered the same, does that mean a 1 hour wait? We were about to give up and leave, but it finally came out and got a burnt crepe as pictured. No apology for the wait or whatever.

Always one of my favour restaurants in Box Hill. Great lunch place.

A great place for delicious traditional Vietnamese cuisine! Had a delicious "Bun Imperial", rice vermicelli with ground prawns wrapped around sugar cane sticks and Hanoi prawn spring rolls!😀👍

Great food however a "fast food service" atmosphere and the management are very curt bordering on rude ! If you are by yourself expect the bill to arrive before you finish as they seem more interested in getting you in and out and taking your money rather than creating a relaxing dining experience! p.s. both times i walked in (also witnessed others) i was greeted with "takeaway" great way to make you feel welcome !! 3 stars is for the food !!

Planned to have some Pho with friends and our 2 kids, six of us went into the restaurant and were arranged to sit in the middle of the corridor which made us feel very uncomfortable because a lot of people passing by. We asked to move to the corner where have more distance from others, the owner Manager said we have to sit in the middle of the corridor or we can leave, no other choice.

So much for supporting local businesses as we ease out of COVID-19.. arrived at 7:45 and it was lights out except over our table by 8:30 whilst staff cleaning around us so we hurried up and left - they didn’t care at all
Really very shocked ...!!!!!

Waiter was sooo rude !! did not care for the noodle type I preferred with my Pho and insisted I have rice noodle - .We will support other businesses for our nights out.

The customer service is ridiculously awful! Been going there multiple times now and they consistently have horrible service. Never smile, assume the worst of customers. I called and walked in and was greeted with “what! You only ordered 4 minutes ago”. I wasn’t even in a rush.... i walked in and smiled, i was more than happy to wait. I have attached a photo of a man using his bare hands to line the inside of the spring roll boxes. 1. Hygiene. 2. Especially hygiene with covid-19. I also saw him take payment, adjust his pants and handle other items before he went back to lining the spring roll boxes. I admit the food is good. But the way you’re treated does NOT compensate. Would not recommend anymore.
I personally think the pho in Indochine is the best one in melbourne. Vietnamese coffee is also a good choice!

Indochine is my go to place for Bánh Cuốn which is one of my favourite things to eat! The staff are super friendly and all the dishes I have tried over the time I have been dining there (the restaurant has been around for 28 years) have been great. It’s just a pity they are not located closer to home!

Cheap and cheerful, efficient and tasty fare. My favorite are their lemongrass beef bun, satay sticks and hanoi spring rolls. They get very busy though but worth the wait

Mmmm I don’t know about this place. The service was ok, not rude as people kept saying, but I really didn’t think the food was that great.

Ordered a bun, vermicelli noodles w grilled pork balls and spring rolls. The grilled pork balls looked as if they grilled it before, way before and just microwaved it when people ordered. It also had this weird sweet salty sauce on top of it, as well as fish sauce. The whole thing was quite salty. The salad was so so as well, the lettuce was a bit wilty but it has all the right herbs, just minuscule amount of it.

Also ordered a broken rice w pork chop and fried egg. The pork chop was really salty and tough.

A consistent go-to when we want chill cheap delicious eats !
The bun & pho are always a winner

Had a lovely dinner here for my brothers 18th birthday last night. Great service, from one waiter in particular, and delicious food as always

Unfriendly staff. BBQ pork vermicelli noode was delicious with fish sauce. However, the broken rice with pork chop was so dry and the hu tiu noodle salad didn’t even have sauce as it supposed to be.

Food was decent and well portioned. After eating, the waiters packed our table and gave the cheque to hint us to leave.

Also when paying at the register, the person who served us had no manners at all. Pretty much just pay and go.

Ok, This place is busy most nights . This Cosy Vietnamese place serves authentic dishes. The Buns are so good! The noodles servings are big. I could never finish those things. I always have their lemongrass char grills. Such a staple for me. The spring rolls and prawn salad are so good. fresh and yum. Probably because the market is just beside it. They do have a good selection of drinks too. They have such a massive selection for their menu. So you are bound to find something you'd like in Indochine.

I often eat here but have always recognised the restaurant’s sub par service but I enjoy the food. However, today I had a really terrible and uncomfortable experience. I was hungry and wanted to grab a quick bite. I was with my friends who were not hungry but they accompanied me and bought drinks and I ordered one meal for myself. The restaurant was not busy and there were empty tables all around us and we were sitting in the section with no reservations. The server was rude and it took several attempts to get the attention of the servers. While we ordered one dish and only drinks between us, the server did not tell us this was against the policy or tell us we had to order one dish each. While I was eating, a Caucasian male came to our table and remarked very rudely that we only ordered one dish between us. I could not eat comfortably after that and I lost my appetite immediately. To do this while I was eating was so tactless, and if he was to say something about it, it should have been when we were ordering or after my meal. I will never dine here again after this appalling experience. There are so many other better and authentic Vietnamese/Asian fusion restaurants in Box Hill.

0/5 stars -

-service: came to this place as my friend was hungry and wanted to grab a quick bite. The rest of us were not hungry but we noticed that the restaurant was not very busy that night and there were plenty of empty tables around. We ordered 1 dish and 2 drinks, when we ordered the waiter did not seem to mind whatsoever that we were not ordering a dish each.

However, as we were eating this older Caucasian man (who we believe to either be the owner or manager) came up to us and sarcastically commented to us stating “only one dish?! We had to give up a table for this”. I think that if he had an issue with this in the first place, this should had been mentioned at the point of ordering. In which case, we would have left the restaurant and gone elsewhere to eat. He could have easily kindly mentioned to us the restaurant policy is one dish per person rather than making passive aggressive remarks.

This used to be a regular place of mine to visit and eat at, however, after being treated and spoken to in such a condescending and rude manner like this I will not be returning again.

Terrible Attitude
One of our friends in our group of four had wanted to dine here for a quick meal and so only she ordered one dish whilst we ordered drinks.
10 minutes in, the Caucasian male worker came up to us and told us distastefully “We let go of a table for only one meal?” as he shook his head. My friend lost her appetite and we left after 15 minutes. Terrible service and will not be returning.

We found the serving sizes here to be super massive. Food had great flavours to it, and whilst the service was curt, it was speedy. The vermicelli and nem nuong was a highlight.

Great Food and Great staff service. Food arrived quickly and hot . Good quantity and excellent value and restaurant was full for a Wednesday night and great atmosphere
Melanie (ForeverBrunching)
A great place for a casual, Chinese/Indonesian meal.

The interior is simple, but comfortable.

I love the bun here! I got the vegan version, because I had a lot of food on that day. It was exactly what I was craving. Yummy, crispy spring rolls, soft tofu, a lot of noodles on the bottom & a tasty sauce!

The service is really quick, even when it’s busy. So don’t expect to wait too long for a meal here!

This restaurant has been in boxhill for ages and still being very popular for the locals and visitors.
Friendly staff with extraordinary prompt service. Their homemade char gilled pork meatball, assorted spring rolls and stir fry are my favorites.
Daisy
Classic beef pho at an affordable price. I feel like pho is always too big of a main for me, so it’s pretty normal I couldn’t finish this bowl. The service was efficient. The restaurant is reasonably big and comfortable.

We had heard lots of good recommendation for this place and had finally found the opportunity to try it out! However the experience was dissapointing from the moment we sat down. Possibly due to the lunch rush, but we were ignored for a long time and had to ask for water no less than 4 times, and even then water was poured but the jug was taken away? It was very noisy but I guess it is the lunch rush. And from what I could see there was only 1 person assigned to our half of the restaurant (a second person turned up half-way through the meal). The food was not what I expected at all. I got the prawn pancake and no, it was just a couple of those small, dehydrated, frozen praws in a heap load of thick pancakes. Also as a side, the table next to us seemed to have their orders forgotten and was served even later than our table and they had to keep chasing down the waiters to ask what was going on.

Amazing food and customer service. Food was extremely fresh and tasted delicious. Friendly staff who were accommodating on a busy night. Will be back for sure.

This place is always super packed so make sure you book! Service is always very friendly and attentive without being overbearing if you get what I mean! Will come back to have their pho noodle soup!

food was average, you can definitely find similar if not better in box hill. Service was terrible. We were told to "stand outside, there's other people waiting" as soon as we arrive, waiter didn't even give us a chance to say how many people, not even a "hi". Then after a long wait, waiter took our order without even eye contact. 1 mistake was made with our order, waiter quickly took it back to the kitchen and changed it, again, no apologies at all, just brought back the food and left on the corner of our table. I'm never going back again for sure.

The service here was disappointing and the restaurant was not busy enough to justify it. We waited ages for menus and no one came so we had to grab our own, we had dirty cups so had to ask for fresh ones, and it took a while again to get the attention of the staff to get our orders taken. The food was good, however, it didn’t make up for the service unfortunately.

Friendly and polite staff...busy restaurant opposite boxhill shopping complex. Good ambiance.
We ordered Singapore noodles and it was fresh, warm and very tasty.
Highly reccomend.

I’ve been here so many times because not only is the food delicious but their serving sizes are huge and for a really good price as well. This time I had the beef pho with rare sliced beef and my friends got the bun which looked very fresh and tasty
Lisa Ann
a busy and buzzing atmosphere, with extremely attentive service and seeming to be only seconds between ordering and receiving the meals. all of the staff were extremely pleasant and happy to help, meeting all requests but not hovering around as a bother. each of the dishes ordered were large portions that didn't compromise on flavour, all fresh with just enough kick of spice and tasting different depending on the ingredients.
definitely keen to return and try more of the menu.

Trying new options loving this place for Vietnamese food in Boxhill, we have returned with the whole family, and will return very reasonably priced, looking forward trying the whole menu

Owner is somewhat haughty when talking to guests. Food was ok. Felt rushed throughout the meal. Have two shops side by side but prefer to cramp all their guests into one. Better off going down to Richmond. Lots of superior Vietnamese restaurants there.

Service could be better and price is a little on the high side. I was here with my family (including a baby and toddler) the other day. I tried to ask for a quieter seat so as to keep my children happy and comfortable and minimise disruption for other customers and they refused to cater to our request, even though there were still lots of seats available at the corners. We were also warned about bringing food for our toddler into the restaurant, and this is the first time it has happened, considering that we have never had issues bringing our own food into other restaurants. This is definitely not a family-friendly restaurant especially for people with younger children.
Gee
Haven’t been here for at least 5 years but it seems that nothing has changed! And that’s a good thing. Popped in for a late lunch and it’s compulsory to order the spring rolls which are still juicy and fantastic. My favourite is the honey prawns on crispy noodles - sure it’s super sweet but the prawns are juicy and succulent and go perfectly with the crunchy noodles. The fried rice was also spot on. Hopefully this place always remains like this!

Returned here for a work lunch the other day. Got the mixed beef and chicken pho which came in a large portion and lots of meat that I couldn’t finish! Tastes good as well. My colleagues also enjoyed their meals.

Seriously the BEST Vietnamese restaurant!!!... friendly staff, excellent fast service, extensive food selection and it's taste and flavour is A-M-A-Z-I-N-GGGGGGG...... Faultless restaurant.... LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEEE
Melbourne Digest
Indochine is the best Vietnamese restaurant in Melbourne. An establishment on its own right, it’s invested in it’s interiors and food unlike any other I’ve been to.

The broken rice there is a must- always go for the egg pâté over the fried egg, if not the special which has both! It comes with deliciously small tender grains of flavoursome broken rice to cleanse the palate, a grilled piece of marinated pork, a serving of special pork skin, julienned pickled carrots and sweet and sour Vietnamese dipping sauce. A fulfilling visit always from an understated, undercelebrated and overlooked restaurant.

Quite a popular Vietnamese restaurant around Box Hill central but there isn't much choice in Box Hill when it comes to Vietnamese food compared to say the western suburbs. On entering there is a distinct odour about the place that is a little stinky. Visually the place is clean and spacious. The overall service is average at best although you can't expect too much at a busy place like this. Having said that there is one fellow who I'm guessing is the boss/manager who tries a bit too hard and mainly just targets the larger tables of customers - but that's business hey. The pho I've had were all decent although I can never really get past the smell of the place even though I've been maybe 4 times. Prices a little on the high side for what you get.

Nice establishment, we didn’t make a reservation but was able to get our table right away. The staff was attentive and helpful. My daughter food contained eggs which we didn’t know. They replaced her meal right away.

The only thing that was off for me was flavouring maybe I’m just used to a different tastebud? The bun bo hoe was on the sweeter side and the spring roll filling was a little bland. My kids food came out perfect and they enjoyed it. Perhaps I need to go again and try different dishes. It’s a nice restaurant regardless and I would recommend this place to others.
Found a SHARP PLASTIC in my take away meal (broken rice). This is my second time taking away food from this restaurant and it was disappointing. Beware of what’s in your meals here.

The restaurant is supposed to be open tonight until 9:30 pm, however upon arrive we were advised at 8:50pm that kitchen is closed. Very disappointed.

Really tasty Vietnamese restaurant in the heart of bustling Box Hill. Service is ok, but it feels like they rush you out a bit - not surprising given how busy it usually is! My favourite thing to order here is the broken rice - such a delicious dish and great value. Everything I’ve ever had here has been really tasty, and a great price point - not the cheapest in Box Hill, but definitely cheap compared to a lot of other places!
Lei Wu
disappointed! I’ve come to this place many times and tonight when I ordered the special beef noodle soup. The thai basil leaves were all dried. There’s no tendon, no brisket, no tripes in this so called special beef. Only rare beef and beef balls. When I asked the guy at counter if they changed the chef, he replied “same chef for the last 23 years” and no comment at all about my dish.

Enjoyed a catch up with friends at the indochine. Friendly service! Really enjoyed the green curry and the rice paper rolls. Not a big fan of the Vietnamese pancake or the 3 colour drink but it didn’t detract from the overall experience being positive.

I have been to Indochine several times before, and all those times I have had a pretty good experience. This was my first time having dinner at Indochine (all the other times I was there for lunch) and it was pretty packed since it was around the Chinese New Year period.

We were able to get a good spot fine and the waiters were ok, although I feel like sometimes they were milling around if they weren't carrying dishes. I was very disappointed that we had to wait more than 30 minutes for our food especially when I kept seeing dish after dish being sent out for the other tables. The food was up to the normal standards, I ordered a Bun with lemongrass pork and spring rolls, it was pretty good. My mum ordered the Special Broken Rice which was mediocre.

But the reason why I rate this restaurant so low was because of the horrible staff. I've read other reviews on the staff at Indochine being horrible but have never really experienced it until now. One of the staff (an older Asian lady, I'm guessing one of the managers or the wife of the manager) behaved disgustingly. Now she didn't say anything directly or verbally to my mother (which is even worse and very disgusting behaviour of her) but when my mum went up to the counter to pay, and I was at the table watching her, the lady manager looked her up and down and started sniggering to herself, she went to say something to her husband whilst looking at my mum, then she went back to the front of the counter to look at my mum's leggings (which were two-toned yellow and black, yes my mum has questionable fashion choices but I don't even mention/care about it anymore) and laughed some more RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. THEN she went to another waiter and WHISPERed something in her ear whilst laughing RIGHT NEXT TO ME and in front of other customers. The waiter then looked at my mum and laughed a bit (maybe out of necessity because I feel like the lady was the manager or whatever) then the lady walked back over AND ONCE AGAIN LOOKED AT MY MUMS LEGGINGS AND LAUGHED. LUCKY for her my mum didn't notice and my mum had also finished paying so I got up and walked out of the restaurant with her feeling angry and disgusted at the same time, making my overall experience horrible. I will NOT be going back again.

We went for dinner on Sat night with my family. We were surprised the foods and price was not as good as the last time we visited last year😜. The waiter/waitress were inexperienced and didn’t clear up the empty dishes when new dishes came while we run out of room on the table!
We will never visit again as there are plenty better eateries in Boxhill than this!
John Cornish
Went to Indochine on a recommendation from friends. We were greeted at the door by who I assumed to be the owner/manager and were seated quickly. First impressions were that the place was very busy and with lots of noise. Too noisy to converse and be clearly heard. The staff were friendly and went over and above with service. Ordered Hanoi + Saigon spring roll and really enjoyed the well cooked, flavoursome 'small treats'. One of our group ordered a seafood Tom Yam soup and thought it was wonderful. Another had vegetable curry and enjoyed this. My wife and I decided to order the Snow pea beef and Ginger Chicken which were listed in the Favourites section of the menu to share. The dishes looked great until you tasted them. Like Chinese restaurants I had visited before the two dishes had the same flavour destroying base that I find with a lot of Chinese cooking. Very disappointed with these two dishes as this was not the Vietnamese experience I was expecting.

Quality has been well maintained since it starts many years ago.
Size does drop a bit but still reasonable.
Services not great but reasonable.

I went here on Tuesday night with my family for my sister’s birthday. I have been here in the past and enjoyed it, apparently they changed owners. I miss the old owner, he was so friendly. We were so surprised with how busy Indochine was on a Tuesday night but luckily we booked. It was very noisy inside too which made it a bit hard to talk to my family.

We all ordered a meal each to share. My brother ordered the pork meatballs with rice paper wrapping. He couldn’t wrap them so the waiter helped him but the waiter dropped it on the ground, he was very apologetic but it would’ve been nice if he replaced that meatball, they tasted good though. The rice paper for my brother’s dish came in a strange contraption but it was handy. My sister ordered the special beef pho, it wasn’t my favourite pho as it had a strong clove flavour but it was still nice. Mum ordered the ginger prawn stir fry which was ok. Dad ordered the chicken coconut curry which was delicious but it was a small serve. The birthday girl ordered the bánh xèo (Vietnamese crepe) which was nice but had too many bean shoots, I think this dish always has too much bean shoots. I ordered the spicy salt and pepper calamari which was my favourite dish of the night. I was going to order the bun with friends but they ran out.

My dad ordered banana fritter for dessert which was recommended by his friend, he enjoyed it a lot. My sister ordered the pistachio praline ice cream which she loved. My mum and sister ordered the coconut lychee ice cream which was nice and refreshing. I had the most expensive dessert which was the salted caramel deep fried ice cream, it was nice but I think it would have been just as good with vanilla ice cream. The people working here were very friendly but I still miss the old manager. I’ll come back and try the broken rice.

Wanted to try Indochine out for a while now since it has been around for a long time. Went in for dinner. We ordered:
1) Prawn Spring Rolls - this was really nice. Loved the dipping sauce, the lettuce, and the mint. The spring rolls were nice and crunchy.

2) Vietnamese Pancake - A very big serving for an entree though expensive ($18.80!) The pancake and the filling inside had good flavour but the main let down was the pancake was very very oily, and the filling was a little on the dry side. Luckily we had the dipping sauce.

3) Soft Shell Crab stir fry - Nice flavour, good amount of sauce. The more you eat, the more heavy you fill.

4) Eggs with Beans - A nice light dish. The beans were green and fresh but the egg was very oily and not fluffy at all. It seemed more like left overs thrown in on the top.

5) Three Colour Drink & Grass Jelly Drink - Both drinks were EXTREMELY sweet which I didn't like. It was almost like drinking sugar syrup.

Overall, the meal had its goods and downs, but seeing as we didn't order any pho or noodle dishes, I would be interested to try that out next time.
Wintice
Expensive for what it is. Flavour was mediocre, nothing stood out but the price was high-ish. I guess the atmosphere is better than the surrounding eateries, but it's not all that great either.

Four people were starving, we made decision to find some foods with big portions.
My friend recommended us to Indochine, we like the table near the window, the staff are friendly with quick service. We decided to order all dishes to share. After we ordering, it came in 10 minutes.
1. The broken rice with fried chicken and fried egg, the broken rice is actually attractive, I like the fried egg with the thin rice noodles inside the most.
2. The rice noodles soup with rare & tendons beef is average for me, but still better than some shops because of less and less MSG. That is good for us doesn't feel thirsty after meal.
3. Unfortunately, the chicken with lemongrass and fresh cut chili was not my expectation, we thought it should be came with dry and maybe a little bit crispy. However, it was juicy and couldn't taste the lemongrass.
4. The soy sauce pan fried chicken flat noodles is our favorite, it doesn't like other restaurants, fried it greasy texture.
Various food options with fair price, dried noodles are better than soup noodles. Side dishes are good as well. Will come back probably once a week

Came to take away for a Saturday lunch. The place smells bad on entry. Came upon a not very friendly order-taker at counter. Ordered special broken rice and bun chargrilled lemongrass chicken & spring roll.

Sign by the counter : Minimum $30 for all transactions. 3% surcharge for Amex.

Food presentation was decent but taste ordinary. Overall, this place was overrated. Will not return.

P.s Opens at 11.30am not 11am as published on Zomato

Overrated, and a bit over priced in my opinion. We came all the way here because of a friend's recommendation, and while actually the dishes tasted good, it was not up to my expectations. We ordered broken rice, bunh, and fried rice. Surprisingly the fried rice was the best one from the lot. The meats were somewhat dry especially the sliced ones but it tasted pretty good. There were too much vermicelli though and by the end of it, we felt like there wasn't enough meat. Oh and their lemon tea was very sweet, not in bad way though.
Jacob Curtis
Pad thai and Bun was terrific. Really tasty for both. We had spring rolls for starters and they were also incredibly tasty. However we also had a wok tossed chicken with chilli jam and basil. The chicken was bland and tasted like very cheap cuts of meat. Additionally service while very quick had a few faults. We waited for a long time to get our drinks and had to ask twice for them. Also we found it very hard to get out waiters attention for water, napkin etc All over I think the rating of 3.8 is appropriate.

I love coming to eat at Indochine. The food is excellent and the service is warm and attentive. I've never had a bad meal here and i've been eating here for years.

We usually have saigon spring roll, prawn rice paper roll and salad and extra dished. The service could be slow depending on the day and time.
I love Vietnam food and this place is very good.

Rather busy around dinner time, but the food makes up for it. The food is delicious, although not outstanding, you get what you pay for. The staff were friendly and the interior has a warm ambience.

A very busy and popular place. I thought that it was pretty average and think there are better places in the area.
The staff are reasonably friendly and attentive, but as it is so busy I can understand if they don't take your order right away.
The food came out quite quickly.
I had some rice paper rolls (pork & prawn mix) and found them very dry and thought that they could have provided more sauce.
The Pad Thai was tasty

Went here for lunch with my Dad and son. Unfortunately they don't have a high chair but they were able to accommodate us at the back with space for son to move around and sit comfortably. We had the Special Beef Rice Noodle Soup ($13.80) and Rice Noodle Soup with Beef Brisket ($12.50). Great servings and delicious soup for lunch.

Nice restaurant with clean authentic pho. Would recommend the lemongrass pork/beef/chicken bún, the best I've ever tasted. Always a good place to enjoy a meal.

The bad experience I have never had! The service is really horrible! The minimum pay of using the debit/credit card is $30. (I knew it when I pay the money) I ate for $13.5 and I only have $12.5 cash at that time. I told the staff that I left $12.5 here and go to atm to take out money to pay for that $1. The staff rejected and ask me to leave my mobile phone. I will never go to this restaurant again!

I ordered the rice vermicelli with lemongrass chicken and spring rolls. The dish came out looking beautiful. The meats with spring rolls were fresh and warm while the noodles and veges were cold and refreshing. Exactly how you want your Bun to always be served! The Vietnamese coffee smelled so good upon arrival with strong notes of toffee. Loved it! Perfect amount of bitter to sweetness from the condensed milk!

I haven't been here for many years as I found another Vietnamese place in box hill I liked more, but that's under construction so I came back!
We get the spring rolls - one vegetarian (for me) and one chicken for two other people at the table. They go to give me pork and shrimp - lucky I double checked! I then get given my vegetarian spring rolls with fish sauce. Ok. I ask for a different sauce and they get it for me. The spring rolls taste really nice.

We then get the mains. They bring out three buns when we ordered two. They check what we ordered, two buns, two vegetarian pad thais.

My boyfriend and friend eat their buns, then comes out a vegetarian pad Thai 5-10 minutes later and I say my friend can have it. I then wait another 15 minutes for my pad Thai. After eating a couple of mouthfuls I find a piece of beef. I haven't eaten meat for several years now. It is taken up to the front and they make me another one, and tell me they won't charge. After about fifteen minutes, my friend, also vegetarian, finds beef in HER pad thai - what they hell is going on? These dishes came out a long time apart from each other so I doubt they were in the same pan. There are some cross contamination problems in that kitchen!

Anyway. The food we eventually got was nice. But it was seriously overshadowed by the numerous mistakes and the beef in the two vegetarian dishes. It is absolutely unacceptable to have animal meat in a vegetarian dish, let alone twice. You absolutely need to fix this problem.

I came here due to the recommendation of my friends. It was underwhelming to say the least. It gets pretty busy so you better book in advance. I ordered Tom Yam noodle soup and Bùn. Nothing great here just extremely ordinary in flavour. The dessert was the highlight. Had the mango sago pudding. It was refreshing.

Indochine is popular... I knew this before I even moved into the area because everyone we spoke to mentioned it. It's hard to get a table without booking unless you arrive bang on opening time. It claims to be Vietnamese but I'd say it has a fairly miscellaneous Asian style menu with plenty of Chinese influence... it is Box Hill after all. I've dined here several time but never with a reservation and found the service to be s little hit and miss. Sometimes we're rushed through and other time can't get the waiters attention. The food is generally good but I'd say not great. If dining in s small group of with people who prefer not to share you might want to opt for the lunchtime menu (also available evenings) which gives you a smaller serve of your main of choice accompanied with rice. That advice was passed down from some Asian friends of mine like it was some big secret. They reckon it's cheaper that way.

Overall I don't really get the hype. The food is just ok

OK rice dishes. But do not try their soup noodle options. Especially the Pho. The soup is tasteless. I mean come on.. the soup is the whole dish. Much better options around. Had some prawn spring rolls too... Had a funky fishy ammonia smell to them. Nothing happened the next day and I am still alive. So must of been something in the seasoning... Hopefully...

Terrific quality Vietnamese! Highlights are the chargrilled meats (beef, chicken,..) on rice or with vermicelli (bun). So tender and taste great! Food here just lacks chilli - so I always ask for some fresh chilli as a side and they bring immediately at no cost.

Too crowded during lunch time. Had ordered a vegetarian fried rice for take away. Dint have a place to sit/stand. After all the pain, is it all worth? No! The taste was bland. Not worth it!

I've been coming to Indochine since I was a child. Having experienced a range of Vietnamese and Chinese food in my adult years, I have to say there is better food out there but indochine holds a place in my heart for their great spring rolls, delightful crispy noodles and buns (boons). I wouldn't bother with their stir fry dishes or curries as they lack punch and depth. I recently ordered my favourite crispy noodles to take away. The noodles weren't crispy at all. Instead they were placed in the gravy and didn't resemble fried texture. I'm not a chef but common sense tells me it would have been better to separate the gravy and noodles for takeaway purposes. Its that kind of thing that tells me the operators aren't focused on giving all their customers a good experience. Crispy seafood noodles were the main reason I keep coming back to this restaurant but I'm not so sure anymore.

$7.50 corkage is over the top and so we now try other places before Indochine. A lot of my local friends are doing the same as there are many other cheaper, just as-good-options in the area. Don't pay it.

I have been dining at this restaurant for 20 years and this is the first time in all my life I have ever been "kicked out" of any eatery. The service given to my friends and I this evening was absolutely appalling. The manager on the floor was constantly glaring at us and pushing us to order, and when our food finally arrived, he came and shuffled our tables across to fit more customers, whilst the uneaten food was on the table! The restaurant was busy but the other half of their hall was completely empty so we had no idea why it was necessary to move our tables, whilst sloshing our food everywhere! Then one of our friends arrived late and ordered her meal whilst we were eating, and before she was evening half way through her dinner the manager again came to our table and quite rudely asked when we would be finished stating that he wanted to sit other waiting customers! We had made reservations and intended for a lovely girls night out which was completely ruined. After receiving such terrible service and continued pressure from the manager my friend gave up on her food and said we should just leave. I will never come here again!

Had a quick dinner at Indochine tonight. Been there a few times, the food seems to have gone done a little. The dish is getting smaller and presentation has gone down hill. However this is one of the better restaurant in the area. Friendly and fun staff always happy to serve. The restaurant is a little crowded and noisy with tables being too close.
Food quality: 3
Service: 5
Cleanliness: 4
Atmosphere: 3
Consistency: 2

We have been to this restaurant many times on a regular base until the last dining experience, we saw the other side of their real business face and decided that we will never go back again.

On that night, once we left the restaurant we realised we paid for a dish we haven't eaten and rang them up about it (We were overcharged $20). They said they couldn't do anything unless we had the receipt number and refused to investigate the matter further. What an awful business attitude! It's their responsibility to find out how they overcharge their customers. Okay! They keep the 20 dollars in exchange with a horrible review and loss of our business ever.

Worst experience ever, owners were rude, both of them.Think they are husband and wife. When I tried to pay in the counter, he asked me the table no, there is no tale no on all tables what's so ever, and no waiter told us our table number the whole time. So I told him I don't know as I assume before I pay, waiter will tell counter people that like any other restaurants do. He blamed on me like you should always ask waiter your table number. So it is my fault that I did not get to be told our table number. Besides waiters were busy and I did not get chance to talk to them. Also hall way besides the counter is too narrow and crowded, me, my mom and my son were standing there in the queue waiting to pay, and female owner tried to get through to us and was like 'why are you standing here and block the way', excuse me but we had no where to stand. NEVER WANT TO GO AGAIN, LOSE US AS CUSTOMER, MAYBE THEY DO NOT CARE.

Dined here with mum on Wednesday. According to her Indochine was "very good" so I thought that if the chef said it was good then it must be good. I got the chicken Pad Thai and the spring roles were to share. Firstly the spring roles were quite good. So how it works (iirc) is that you wrap the spring roll with the lettuce, place some of the noddles (which are conveniently hiding in the photo) on top of the spring roll wrapped with lettuce, place some coriander on the noodles and lastly drizzle some sweet chili sauce on top of all that. It was unbelievably fresh and unbelievably good. The only improvement I can list is that the spring rolls probably needed to be thicker, but then again, they are probably only meant to be consumed by one person. The chicken Pad Thai was quite flavourful. A bit too spicy for my liking. But it was nice. This is the second time I've had Pad Thai and I really liked how the noddles were a little firm. The decor was very appealing to the eye, and the music playing in the background was very classy sounding. I can't say much on the service. It was friendly if not a little unenthusiastic. I have read some of the reviews on Zomato about the service which seems to be the biggest criticism, but it didn't seem bad at the time. It's been almost a year since I last ate something at Box Hill, and I know I'll be coming back very soon.

I've gone to meet friends who had a booking here, my friend nicely asked if we can have a nicer table as we were by the door, manager was so rude and told us if we weren't happy to leave. So we did... we hadn't ordered or eaten or drunk anything. He chased us outside and said "well thanks for coming". My friend said "not a problem" then turned and said "there are two free tables left now" to the people outside waiting to get in. The next thing we hear as we walk away is the manager screaming "F**k YOU C**t F**K YOU"... to us in front of all the customers!!! Oh my gosh! We are in shock!!! Totally unnecessary and unprovoked. He must have been having a hell of a bad night! We certainly will NOT be back and this definitely goes down in our personal hall of fame of restaurant experiences for "great place to go and be abused for no reason by management"

An authentic busy Vietnamese restaurant which a majority order pho, broken rice or bún. I normally get the rare beef pho and sometimes the grilled lemongrass beef bún. The service is pretty well for a busy place and they have quite alot of staff working. There is a reasonable amount of meat in both dishes and the pho broth is sweet and tasty, with no MSG. To add a bit more flavouring, you can add in chilli or sweet onion, with complimentary basil, bean shoots and lemon. Great viet fix for a regular price of $11.50 but would be better if they could add a tad more noodles.

Box Hill would not cross my mind when I think of Vietnamese food. Due to my hectic work schedule coupled by the need to hit the gym as much as possible, dinner time is usually a bit later for me and so, very rarely do I get the opportunity to head to Springvale for good Vietnamese food. Vaguely remembering a decent Vietnamese restaurant visit in Box Hill with a few friends last year, I suggested this place to WL and now, it seems to be one of my favourite places to go, much to his displease :p

Walked in off the street, place was packed and we were greeted by the friendliest, most flamboyant host who instantly had us grinning!
We ate rice paper rolls which were fresh and full of flavour, then beef red curry, garlic greens and combination noodles!
Everything was brought out so quickly and tasted amazing!
The portions were big enough for us to share between 4 (with rice)! The red curry was a table favourite but unfortunately the smallest of the meals (but still plenty)
Despite us staying until closing time, the staff were extremely friendly and professional and we felt the price was extremely reasonable for the food and service we received, BYOW is a huge plus for us uni students also!
We'll definitely visit again but will call ahead to avoid potential disappointment!

Been going here pretty much my whole life and the quality of the pho has not changed at all. It's always been amazingly delicious. Portion size is pretty big and the price is cheap.

I grew up eating here and it's also the place where I had my first exposure to Vietnamese food. Love all the food! I could never get sick of it!

When we were in Melbourne a couple of months ago, we met up with two of my friends from primary school (who moved to Melbourne the first chance they got). One of them suggested meeting at either a pizzeria or Vietnamese, and I voted for Vietnamese food without hesitation. Located in Box Hill, Indochine has been operating for many years, gaining a good reputation and building up a loyal customer base. Service was efficient and the food we ordered was delicious. Price was reasonable too, so I can see why Indochine is a popular choice.

Found traditional banh xeo- Vietnamese savoury crepe and really enjoyed it! We also had the hanoi rolls with bun. Overall food was fresh , appetising and delicious . Service and cleanliness however can be improved .

Best bun cha in Melbourne by far. I have tried so many. The lemongrass pork with spring rolls. Have been coming here for years, always the same great taste. Excellent service, fast, fresh and friendly

This place is one of my favorite viet restaurants. Not all the dishes are a hit, but if you know what to order then you're in for an amazing meal.
Must try are the hanoi springrolls, either on their own or with vermicelli noodles and grilled beef/pork bowls. The grilled meats with banh hoi are also amazing, we had the meatballs this time and I absolutely loved the dipping sauce.
I'm not a fan of the soup pho, but the stir fry version is quite tasty. We had the pineapple squid and it was ok, definitely needed more pineapple and seasoning.
There are enough staples here, not to mention the friendly front of house, to make this place a regular for me.
Decent Viet feed.

I always leave Indochine feeling satisfied. It's good quality Vietnamese without being amazing. I do think it is a little overrated, and I much prefer the Vietnamese options of Victoria street Richmond, however if you're looking for a quick bite of rice paper rolls and a bun, it's perfect.

I have a friend who is obsessed with the place, however my pallet would take me to other places before here when in the box hill area.

I had lunch there today with my mum, husband and my 9 months old baby. Their food came ok but noodles in my pad Thai was hard and undercooked. I sent the dish back to the kitchen. 5 minutes later manager came to our table and said "that's what pad Thai should be". He then pushed the menu to me and said "if you don't like it just order something else". I was shocked by how rude he was. I had pad Thai before many many times. I know what the noodles should be. What they sent was surely undercooked or soaked in water not long enough. I'm extremely disappointed with my experience. I will not go back to a restaurant that cannot take criticism!

Went on Monday night and had the Bun with vegetarian spring rolls and tofu. 3 hours later I had bad food poisoning and was bed ridden for 2 days. Usually love Indochine but definitely won't be going back knowing that their food handling is not up to scratch. Very disappointed!

Booked a table for dinner on a Saturday night. When we walked in at 7.30 there were a few empty tables and chairs but that changed after a few minutes, and they were soon packed. The staff are so friendly, and very attentive. Whilst we were waiting to order a staff member came running from the back wall, waving, as he knew we were ready to order. We ordered spring rolls to share and seperate main each. The food came out very quickly. And the chicken and tarot spring rolls were crispy and full of flavour, as was the lemon grass chicken bun. Definitely recommend and will be coming back again.

An extensive menu means you are spoilt for choice but I often wonder when a restaurant is offering you so many options how can they possibly do them all well. With Indochine the flavours were good but the quality wasn't necessarily there. Prices were pretty reasonable but not low enough for such poor quality tasting meat. The calamari was lovely and the pad Thai decent but the green curry was made with stringy chicken that was very unpleasant to the palate. Wouldn't rule out returning for the seafood dishes as the spring rolls were crunchy and flavoursome

Came here with 2 friends and ordered:1 x Pho Tai (rare slice beef)1 x Bun Bo Hue
1 x Prawn Tom Yum Soup
1 x Bo La Lot (Beef in Betel Leaf)1 x Chicken Springrolls

The bill came to approx $70.I came here because a friend recommended the pho broth but mine was pretty shit and the noodles were way too soft. The BBH was 4/10, lacking flavour and spice. Chicken springrolls were overcooked and a little burnt but still pretty tasty. Tom Yum soup had a decent amount of flavour but the serving was quite small. The Bo La Lot was so fkn yum WOULD RECOMMEND.
