Amazing food. We ordered chicken fried rice. It's a lot and easily a portion for two and it was great. Garlic prawn spring rolls were like so crunchy and yummy. They stood out of all the dishes and a must eat fish at every visit. Seafood soup is something I did not like and my fried ordered prawn fried rice. I highly recommend ordering your fried rice spicy and you shall be eating food sitting at the doors of heaven. We also ordered some seafood noodles which was good.

This place is a lot better than the ones in city. Their spicy sauce is amazing and food flawless. Eveytime I go there, staff are very friendly and helpful. Update- went there after a year and food was still the same as good as before but service no better. One of the server didn’t even understand when we’re ordering and was ridiculous when asked for some chilies was told will be charge for that. Before they used to have chilli oil on the table but not anymore and then when asked for fresh chili they are just thinking of how to make monkey. With service that like would never go back.

Definitely not recommended! Ordered roast combination with rice. The flavor of roast combination was acceptable, but the rice is raw! Asked if that possible to change another plate of rice for me, the waitress not even listened to my whole sentence and said, "Just put more sauces on rice! Our rice is like that." I was like I beg your pardon???? A brand restaurant established more than 20 years can't even cooked well a bowl of rice? A suggestion here, get your staffs trained. Please don't ruin your 20years reputation.

Food is very tasty and hot. Quick service.

Found it very oily and salty, service was good and food came out reasonably quick. Spent $121 between three of us which wasn't bad, there was a lot of food. The chicken and core soup came out a little cold bit was taken away and heated up. It was possible the nicest dish and didn't make me feel like I had over done it.

The roasted pork and chicken dumplings were really nice but the duck was not as good as the one I've tried in the Russel street branch. Food aside, the service there was terrible, it wasn't busy at the time but was so hard to get the attention of the staff and when we finally had their attention the way they were speaking was just rude. Other then that, the water/tea they served tasted like unfiltered old water.

Old school establishment. Opens late. Full range menu with all the classic Cantonese dishes. Consistent taste. Fair prices. Great comfort food. What more can you ask for?
Carlos
Food was barely even warm. Service was incredibly rude.

Ordered hainanese chicken on uber eats and there was no side soup or sauces provided. Absolute gutted

Considering whenever I go to Box Hill and I'm looking for something cheap and good I go here for the honey chicken with fried rice, and the taro with coconut cream. but seriously the taro smoothie is so good i love it. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal at this place. The staff are always so welcoming especially the owner.

Good roast duck and pork. The only negative I would say it is not pram friendly, we tried it once and unfortunately it was pleasant. We kept getting bumped by the waiting staff and customers. It's not their fault. But the food is great, always a roast or their rice/noodle dishes. Would not recommend their dim sims and other yum cha dishes because it doesn't taste that nice and not freshly made. That's just my opinion. Stick to their roasts.

I always based my experience of China Bar from the CBD experiences. Not very fair.

First time dining in and I really enjoyed my casual dining experience there. Tea is constantly topped up. Server are attentive and fast too. I had Roast Duck Dry Noodle, approx $14. You may think it’s too pricy for such dish but the quality you are getting is definitely good for 2 person sharing. So do the maths. Quite price worthy! I am sick actually but I can enjoy the food.

Will visit again. 4 stars because I was craving for some wine but they don’t do alcohol menu. I know I’m sick, but alcohol cures all sickness. 😅

🍲 Mixed Roast with Dry Egg Noodles
🥤 Taro Coconut Shake
💰 $13.90 - Crispy Pork and BBQ Pork
.
Good ol' China Bar with @bite_me_melbourne! 😁 It only came to my attention recently that China Bar is exclusive to Melbourne 🤔 so if you're new to Melbourne or simply visiting for a few days, China Bar is your LATE NIGHT spot, any day of the week for a decent asian fix!🌙 there's a saying here that goes, "if all else fails, CHINA BAR!" ☝🏽 im pretty sure that's how most indecisive food conversations go anyway 😅 its true though 🤗 now i know some people downright don't like or are over it.. but China Bar, in my opinion, is a GREAT spot and option, that you know will fill you up with damn good asian food for a decent price 😉 its always around and always open, that its become somewhat of a local maccas! 🤔 lol so if you're ever in need of a late night night fix and can't decide? China Bar it! 😉
.
☑ 7/10! These guys make some TERRIFIC classic dishes! ☝🏽 always been a fan of their roast duck and crispy pork 🤤 beautiful, juicy, chunky pieces of roast duck with tasty, fatty skin and great portion sizes! 👌🏽 also their char kway teow is 🔥 portions are always great! 🙌🏽 the price has crept up in recent years however still good value for money 💰 the food tastes brilliant! 😉 excluding the comparison of your higher end chinese and asian spots. GREAT FOOD, GOOD PORTIONS, CHEAP, QUICK AND CONVENIENT! 🙌🏽 can't ask for much more at 12am 😉
.
💡 TIP - my only concern with China Bar is the consistensy across stores! 🤔 personally i swear by the BOX HILL store! 😉 they cater to whatever combinations you want and the food is always GREAT! Swanston St can be a hit and miss at times depending on the traffic and Glen Waverley has stepped it up a little in recent times 😊 BOX HILL store though is my GO-TO 👌🏽

Went there for lunch food was lovely and serving staff were great but lady at counter when we went to pay told us off for wanting to split the bill . There was no one in there and she said she was too busy
Well we won’t be coming back coz we will be too busy eating somewhere else
Ajengintann
Food was okay, bad customers service. Trying to say thank you after they took the menu, but he not even smile to me, but instead he giving me a bad face. Very disappointed

Me and my buddy were here for a quick dinner and it was way past the dinner time. Usually, the China bar in CBD opens 24hrs, this outlet is open only until 4 AM. It was a bit crowded, most of the tables were occupied and the ambiance was good. I liked the energy in there and the interiors and flooring may make some people feel uneasy.

I ordered the Flat rice noodles with crispy beef. The staff, a young man, seemed he prefers not to talk instead he just throw down the menu and showed up the paper to mark our choice. We scribbled down the order and later the person took it off for the kitchen.

The way he served the food was a bit rude. Instead of putting down slowly he just pushed it on the table like he is throwing food for free. And the worst part is, he didn't even acknowledge that he served the food instead he just quickly walked away to the next customer. The food was delicious and as we were enjoying it over a good conversation the earsplitting sound of the juicer made everyone uncomfortable. It was really a let down every time the juicer comes on. I wish they could have operated it in an isolated session at the kitchen. The noodles were fine but, it was a bit of too many flavors that I could literally taste the powder they put it. You can see that when you look at the noodles how all those spice powders stuck on to the food.

We had a good time dining here given, the mixer is turned off. The staff should be trained properly in customer service. The food was delivered pretty fast which is impressive. A good 'late night' joint.
Good Food Good Mood
We were looking for a late night option post a night out and being open until 4am definitely fit the profile. There’s plenty of options and everything’s cheap, quality wise it’s nothing special but I think you get what you pay for. I pretty much always get the koay teow and it’s consistent
Vanessa
I usually come here for some late night dinner. The crispy pork/ duck or chicken with rice/ noodles or noodle soups are always a safe option and the combination isn’t bad. The only ones that’d I’d give a skip is the roast pork or duck in noodle soup as they get soggy and chewy after some time.
It can also be deafening when staff are using the ice blender, but thankfully it’s only for short periods of time. Service is quick and staff are attentive. **NOTE: The minimum amount for Visa & Master credit cards payment is $30. A midnight surcharge also applies; 10% for all transactions after 12am.

I have eaten at many Chinese restaurants (yes, surprise) in Box Hill. This is, hands-down one of the very BEST. The decor is friendly and VERY clean, the staff are so accommodating and likeable and the food...well, what can I say? The BBQ portions are only exceeded by the flavour. Do yourself a favour, grab some dumplings, noodle dish, beef dish, giant soups, well; anything, really. I've never been able to finish China Bar's indulgent dishes, but always serve me well the next day or two. Fast, efficient, friendly, tasty and overall, brilliant. Don't forget that parking is just over the road - for a $1/hour.

I've got no complaints on the China Bar at Boxhill. Convenient for busy workers running around 24/7 because its open till early morning.
Food is great as always but the exceptional part is that the portions are HUGE!
Its the same price as the other branches but the portion sizes are craazy!
The staff were nice even at busy hours. Went there at 12am and it was packed.

Mushroom n chicken friedrice - not a huge fan but was ok
China bar fried rice - loved it
Beef brisket on rice - the beef was so succulent loved it
Crispy pork fried rice - my winner. Loved it
Kris Voulgaris
Love the food and love the people even more great place for a feed recommend it! Very consistent place never disappoint, my go to places whenever I’m hungry.

Had something quick to eat at China bar in Box Hill which always seems to be quite busy at late nights and they open even after 12 am which was quite convenient if anyone wants a nice midnight supper although they will charge you a little extra.

We had the hainanese chicken which came with a nice small bowl of chicken soup. Chicken was tender and the rice had a real nice chicken flavour to it. The soup does compliment the dish but I found the rice was a little too oily for my liking.

We then had the roast and crispy pork with egg noodles and also came with the soup as well. The dish was really filling but the pork was delicious, the meat was very tender and both types of meat had a lot of flavour which made the noodles enjoyable to eat.

Would come again to try out other dishes if we feel more peckish during the late night!
I came here for dinner, ordered the broccolini with roasted sesame sauce, dry noodles roast combination and the wonton noodle soup. They serve every meal generously but the actual taste isn’t there, it tasted very plain. Over $40 for a meal for two.. I don’t think it’s worth it.
Sunny Days Melbourne
I have been coming here for almost the past 20 years...yes, it's been here for that long! There have been changes to their menu every now and again but this particular branch of China Bar serves solid, consistent and tasty dishes. Yes, the floor is a bit sticky. Yes, it's a bit squishy especially when it's busy. And yes, the service is not sterling BUT they have one of the best roast meats around.

Roast duck, char siu and crispy pork.....their delicious triad of meats never disappoints. The accompanying sauces accentuate the already highly tasty meats. Here's to another 20 years, China Bar Boxhill!

Don’t understand why the taste are so much different with Cbd branch.. the taste really worst. I really recommend Swanston st Cbd branch. The taste really good.
Hân Trịnh
Their roast duck was pretty good but not exceptional. The service here just like in all China bar restaurants is cold and unfriendly. It is a good place to go for a quick cheap meal.
Bear Noms
My good friend’s local favourite eatery so decided to give it a go. The pork was not as crispy, and there was not enough sauce on the rice. The texture of the barbecue pork was a bit dry. The honey crispy chicken rice came with too much batter and the sauce was a bit plain. The fried rice that came with it was slightly bland.
Steven Gu
China bar at Box Hill. Very famous restaurant good place for supper. BBQ pork dish is good but the environment was small and crowded. Service was poor.
Yovita Aurora
What I love the most about China Bar is they opened till 4am in the morning, even other branches can open for 24 hours and they serve a decent food. So when you’re going out and you’re starving afterwards, you know where to go.
I’ve visited China Bar in different branch for several times and they never disappoint me though. At this time of visit, I ordered Dry Noodles with 2 Roast Combination and Pork Dumplings (which I forgot to take a picture of it). And they taste great! They are also very generous for the portion.
Cons : their staff are super unfriendly, so don’t expect you’ll be greet with a big smile from the staff. When you order after midnight, there is also a minimum purchase so beware of that.
I really wish they can train their staff to be more friendly though, I can give them a 4 stars if that ever happen
Vivian
One of the few restaurants open late but its best maybe to save your calories and starve in my opinion. The food is always oily and makes me feel sick afterwards. The portions are ok but the amount of ingredients they give you in the rice dishes or noodles is very small. The food is filled with MSG and super salty or super bland ( depends on the night you go )
Hesh Auradhi
Had Seafood tom yum noodles soup, wonton noodles soup and nasi lemak. Was delicious. Loved the seafood tom yum soup (spicy). Good customer service. 😊👍

I went here on a late Saturday night. I wasn’t going to order much food but then I saw Hainanese Chicken Rice on the menu. After the awful chicken rice in Werribee I needed some good chicken rice to make up for it.

My friends ordered honey chicken, chicken laksa and pork dumplings to share. Everything came out very quickly, my friend’s honey chicken came out instantly. My chicken rice was last to come out hehehe. It was a huge serving but it was pretty tasty so I ate all of it. The rice could’ve had a bit more chicken flavour but at least it didn’t have curry powder hehehe. The chicken was flavoursome and the sauces were perfect. I saw a couple of other people in the restaurant having chicken rice too. The dumplings were good and I really liked the sweet vinegary red sauce that came with them.

The service was interesting. When they were grabbing our order and clearing our dishes they did it in a hurry and they were a bit rough, they nearly knocked my friend’s phone off the table. Other than that they were friendly enough. I would come back here next time I have late night Asian food cravings, I’d probably get the crispy chicken rice next time. I’ve had sweet and sour chicken at China Bar years ago and I remember it being really good.

Worst attitude I've never met. You are not the only Chinese restaurant in Boxhill, why be so cocky? We are customers here to spend money not only on your so-so food but also we expect at least a friendly dining atmosphere.
The man in the shirt (looks like the manager) serving at the front even lets people jump in the queue by his own choice.
Leonagao121
A mix of Asian food, not only Chinese food. Good quantity and price but the taste is just so so. A place to go when you don’t know where to eat.
Vivi861
Rubbish services. A waitress gave me menu and paper without a pen, but she supposed me to write down my order. 5 minutes later, she served wrong dish on my table. How could she have such a shorten memory?
CCC
I love Chinabar, service is always extremely fast and and everything is fresh. The only issue is that since they've adopted the new method of writing down your orders, all the entrees and mains come out at the same time which is annoying. Order twice if you want to have a small break between your courses
Zest_of_life
I love this China Bar. Every now and then i grab some dinner with the lads, and this place is always consistent with its food. The staff are friendly and the service is good. No complaints at all.
Tori
Quick service but one of our mains was given to another table so we had to wait while everyone else ate with no compensation on the meal. Veggie Spring rolls and the coconut milkshake were yum. Big portions on the mains, rice and soup but nothing special food wise. I got the beef brisket noodle soup, I couldn't even eat the mince it tasted like jelly.... eww
Probably wouldn't go back again
The Gastronaut
Nothing fancy or unique about this restaurant. This place is always packed, I think its because of its presence in many locations. The service is poor and the staff hardly interact with customers. Food is average.
Coco Crisp
After hearing good reviews decided to try this place for dinner ..Good Asian food and worth paying! There's a plethora of Asian dishes ..Good service by the staff Will definitely visit again :)
Lewy
Disgusting food, horrible service, far better Asian restaurants to eat at in the area. Manager in the pink shirt was a rude arrogant pig. Food was oily and full of msg

Won't be back

If you are looking for late night food this place will be right there. Open till 4 am China Bar serves delicious Chinese cuisine. Ordered the usual BBQ Duck and it was delicious. Stay was very friendly even when the place was packed. Their tea was very boring and I was looking for some flavour in it.
Ashleigh Craig-Smith
This was the worst honey chicken that I have ever had. My partner got the beef and black bean, this was also absolutely terrible. Cannot say that I will be back.
Yorkstergram
Gotta love China Bar for a sneaky post-shift or Supper eat! There's a plethora of Asian food options for all tastes. I particularly loved the chicken and salted fish fried rice, used to be my midnight feast guilty pleasure!

The staff are friendly and efficient too!
I S2 Food
Always a nice go to place if you want a quick fast and tasty meal in a modern atmosphere. This place is generally filled with the younger generation. Good value for money.
JT Esse
Average BBQ pork buns. Staff are rude (very typical of China bar franchises) ridiculous 7.50
Per person limit. Which we argued
because it is only printed at the very back of the menu so we didn't see it until we had ordered . They tried to protest but I threatened to walk. To which they changed their mind
Cookiemonsta
Okay for a late night feed. Roast meats are the only dishes I'd get here. Would stay away from the homemade drinks, they're overpriced for what they are.
NC
Busy restaurant with a great selection to suit everyone. Regular customer and would definitely recommend the steamed pork dumplings and china bar fried rice. Open until late but there can often be a bit of a wait so be prepared. Staff are also friendly considering how busy they are.
Sam Wong
Been here for dinner before. Rude waitress. Bad service. And the food is nothing to write home about.

Tonight we had soy chicken. Most respectable housewives can cook soy chicken properly. The soy chicken we had tonight, cold and dry. Even the skin tastes like a sheet of plastic. The best part is the oily springonion. Should give it a miss without consideration.
MF
Came here 12 at night on saturday, it was packed! The chicken feet was suprisingly good! Curry mee goreng was good, seafood horfan was good as well, but chicken & mushroom fried rice here was so-so. Overall happy with our food, as the taste is better than any other chona bar that we'v tried.
Fat Panda
Come here for the roast mainly... the roast duck, BBQ pork, and roast pork is pretty consistent, the soy chicken is a hit or miss. Service is always good on the countless times I have been here, except one lady in particular that looks like Yzma from Emperors New Groove. She can be a bit rude.
The durian milkshake is good if done properly!
Kimky
Came here during lunch with a friend. I had the nasi lemak beef and my friend ordered the triple roast meats on rice. It was yummy and the service was fast. Would return back for other dishes.
Melindajoe95
I went there last week with my wife and afew friends and we had an awesome night. Food was good and value for money but the service was not that good. Maybe coz was in the rush hour.
Nean
Very average, and some items below average. The roast duck almost burned my taste buds with the amount of MSG. The broccolini with sesame sauce was quite vinegary, and lacking the sesame flavour. My Ja Jia mien was appalling. The sauce was like a soup, which was too sweet and held no resemblance to a true Ja Jia Mien. The only semi decent dish (though quite fatty) was the beef brisket noodle soup.
TweeVy Ngo
Love Chinabar mainly because of their opening hours. Good for late night suppers. Service is quick and food tastes like typical Chinese food. Their crispy pork belly and roasted duck tastes great. Unfortunately their seafood laksa wasn't any good at all. Lacked in taste and seafood.
Doris Stark
One old woman of the waitress is too impolite👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 hope they can train the waiters and waitresses more🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂 2.0 for the just so so food.
Melbrunchin
Serious oh&s issues here, witnessed a waiter eating someone's left over food, whose to say they don't reuse what people don't eat and pass it into the next? Also saw them reuse the tea. Gross.
Foodstorean
Had wonton noodle soup... the broth was so salty that i came home feeling nauseous. It was like sipping on hot seawater. I didnt even get 3 bites out of it. Just couldn't... there was no point even telling the staff there as they are so busy just getting food out and clearing ppl out asap
Ash
Situated on Station street in bustling Box Hill this is the king of China Bar's. With the best portion size and better flavours. I have been to this China Bar many times and it always delivers. Their pork buns are the best I can find and the nasi goreng is delish. Most recently I visited this place for a quick Sunday lunch. We ordered combination roast pork and lemon chicken with fried rice and it was tasty as always. Next time your in the mood for good food that's quick and affordable head on over.
Karen Ling
I ordered a takeaway steam pork and prawn roll and the lady microwaved it in a takeaway container! She probably then realised I was standing there waiting for my takeaway so she ignored the food and left it in the microwave for over 10min after the "ding". I had to remind the waiter, who then reminded the lady. The lady sneakily took the container to the kitchen and reappeared with my microwaved food!
Peanut Butter Cup
Another late night session at China Bar. I ate the Soy Chicken on rice and found the chicken was quite dry, and I found myself having to try and remove the chicken from the bones. Overall it was an average dish. My friend had the roast pork belly which looked really good. The quality of the meals may have been due to the time of day (1am), and the service was good.
Z-Lina Wuy
I like the combination crispy noodle from China Bar Box Hill, it's the best!!! yummmm.... Service is quick & friendly, good price for my pocket :D
Aman Singh
Great food. Great service. Place is busy almost daily as this is a popular suburb and especially dinner time. My favs are roasted duck , fried chicken and prawn rice combo. Good quantity and they serve flavoured tea too.
Philippe Francois
They get a point for staying open late in Box Hill, and a half a point for being quick, the food came out very quickly and the wait staff was doing a reasonable job.
the food is not bad for a quick take away type of dish. The roast pork and bbq pork was ok, but the more you eat it the less you like it. Good variety menu, although everything tastes almost the same.
In general not bad for what it is.
COBRAA-KING
always nice, been here for 10000xxxx. friendly staff, tasty food and affordable! Open till late morning!!! The nasi lemak worth of try, nice curry, crispy roasted pork, noodle soup etc. Everything in the menus are great!
Teh P. Bhuwit
The worst China Bar in Melbourne. Had to find a table then go to order by myself. The among of Hainanese chicken on rice was much lesser than the others China Bar and the rice was also a bit too hard. No water service till the end. And no "Thank you" word when I paid. Felt like I came to eat for free. Definitely not coming back and will tell everyone I know about this.
One Piece Left
One of the few places open until 4am daily so if you're looking for food in the early wee hours and you don't feel like fast food then this is one of the very few places to stop by. Don't expect the best quality food or service though. I normally order the chicken hainanese which is one of the better dishes. In generally the food is a bit on the oily side. They also have a yum cha menu but again it's not the best. I think the main thing they have going for them is that they are open so late.
Beau James
Where else to go at midnight for a feed than China Bar? It's an easy trip at that time and it's so easy to order, eat and leave.

Between the two of us we ordered a lot of food, which I'll get through now.

Steamed pork dumplings - very disappointing they don’t have pan fried (always go pan fried) and they were a let down honestly. Still tasty but too watery for my liking.

Lemon Chicken - Chicken is nice and good to see the batter stayed on the chicken! The sauce is a bit too sweet personally but it still goes down alright.

Beef and broccoli in oyster sauce - probably my favourite part of the meal. Beef was tender and the veggies worked a treat. Do recommend.

Peking Duck - A bit let down by the duck to be honest, still tasted nice was wasn’t as juicy as I was hoping.

BBQ Glazed Pork - Really tasty and the sauce had seeped into the rice which was great. Definitely recommend this one too.

Service is what you expect from a place like this though they were nice and always happy to grab an extra drink etc. Worth the money if it’s late and night and you want quick easy service.

Amazing place ! ignore other reviews.. I've been to boxhill china Bar countless times over the years. Never have they let me down, the food is always delicious the service is quick plus you always get free delicious tea. I can't explain why others have had bad experiences but I stand behind this place 100%. I strongly recommend you try this place for yourself before you reach any conclusions.

Good value for money tasty me goreng and fried noodles looking for casual fast food this place is the one to be in box hill service is fast too
Notice Me Senpai
The most unauthentic Ma Po Tofu I have ever tasted. Very greasy, and no spice at all. Will be sticking with the Taiwan Cafe in the shopping centre.
Melbournian
Best Chinabar around. The special fried rice is delicious (had it from the Doncaster Chinabar once and it was horribly dry and lacked ingredients). Also really yummy roti chanai curry, and mee goreng. Open crazy hours too which was always great when I worked in hospitality and heading home at 1am starving.
Melbsgaleater
Cheap and yummy Asian dishes 1am in the morning who can complain.... Quality isn't great but still tastes good.
Binula
Cheap, fast, average food. They are consistent though - if you have a favourite meal, they'll make it well, quickly each time. They could definitely learn to smile a bit more
John
Would never go back. Ask for extra meat in a meal...pay for the extra meat & instead they put extra noodles & sauce to make it appear like there is extra meat. Food was not fresh & service is below average. They got all our meals wrong.
Chris Wookie
Not happy about getting caught out with every China Bar franchise having a Cash Only policy in 2015. Seams dodgy and like something the ATO should look into????
Sunny Singh
Gross food. Food is crap, uncooked tasteless rice . Not worth of money what we paid for take away food. Black bean beef noodles was shocking. We end up cooking at home after that horrible food we got from China bar box hill.
Ragadoll23
Bad service. Food is strange.. I eat here often because it's cheap and close to my house. I've tried almost everything on the menu by now and I've got to say, there's a taste that I can't describe that's in absolutely everything.. Not a pleasant one either (Probably MSG). The food is okay for what you pay for, expect the bare minimum of whatever dish you ordered.

-10 points for the fact that I definitely did not appreciate coming in on the way home one night and having the cooks hiding behind the shelf with the steamed foods poking out their heads pointing and laughing at me. Really professional guys.. I struggle with anxiety enough as it is.

Sweet And Sour Fork
The noodles had lovely, charred edges and the sprouts were a crispy, fresh counterpoint, but I just couldn’t get past the fact that it was sitting in a puddle of oil.

Horrible place run by horrible people.. The floor manager was rude to the staff and has a chip on his shoulder and the manager or owner who does the money is rude to the guests and has a chip on his shoulder too! The food was raw and bland and overpriced. The premises was dirty and they want you to write the order down on a pad they leave with you at the table- so they want me to cook the meal too? Mind you it probably would have tasted better if I had have cooked it. They don't provide side sauces for non-Chinese and overall the place is a disgrace. McDonald's is better run and has better prepared food. GIVE THIS PLACE A BIG MISS.
Sagent83
I love this place so much. Been coming for 7 years. The manager is a nice man and always welcomes myself and the group I'm with. Hot food and quick with nice staff who constantly fill your glass up with complimentary tea. More variety, and nicer staff and not once have I felt discriminated against because I was white unlike the glen Waverley store.
Will keep coming back here for a long time
Janedoe
Not bad for the price you pay. This is somewhere I normally go with my partner for a quick bite when we can't be bothered to cook and don't feel like spending too much on dining out. Service is generally fast, lots of variety on the menu, cheap, some stand out dishes and some that are fairly average. Obviously it's no Flower Drum so you basically get what you pay for and food and service is pretty decent for the price they charge. You can't really compare this place with fine-dining restaurants, but it's comparable with Maccas (western food equivalent) so expect what you'd expect to get from a fast-food joint.
Julie Mitchelmore
Wish I'd checked reviews first. Ordered takeaway Fried Koay Teow and Singapore noodles tonight and thoroughly regretting the decision. Cheap enough, but apart from a handful of tough shallot ends that we couldn't even chew, there were no discernable vegetables at all in either of them and they would be very well described as bland noodle slop. The extra prawn tails we spat out weren't a nice surprise either. Maybe the other offerings are better, but I'm never going back after that. We ended up throwing most of it out.
Fadi
I'm a regular at this china bar, I order the same thing everytime, sweet and sour chicken, when I got my order I took a bite and it smelt fishy, I told the manager that there was an odour, he laughed at me, I felt insulted, on top of that he charged me for the meal I didn't eat. Regular customer gone

My Box Hill mainstay. I have some favourite dishes here that are my go-to in Box Hill when I'm passing through and in a rush. They have a fantastic noodle soup with crispy pork, duck and some greens that's less than $10 and it's great.

It's not fine dining, but you know that going in. For the price, well worth it.

Heart broken. I just to come here a lot as a child and it was great. But that was before now i can only say its horrible. I went there today and had the worst meat I've tasted in my life, i couldn't believe what happened to this place, it used to be good :(

The peanuts were the only thing with flavour. I've been passing through Box Hill a lot for job reasons, and since my cooking gear is still sailing across the Pacific, I have an excuse to buy cheap Chinese takeaway for dinner. I have good memories of that style of food from when I was a kid and in uni. Not classy, but tasty. So anything from an Asian hotspot like Box Hill must be good, right?

Wrong. I stopped at this China Bar because the dishes on the menu in the window looked attractive and the prices were sub-$10. Something called Kung Bo chicken on rice had three hot peppers on the "hotness scale" next to the name, and it had peanuts on top. I like heat and peanuts, plus I reckoned with that combo, it must be Szechuan. Instead, it was flavourless. There was a crudely chopped-up red pepper that had been dried and rehydrated, but it had no spicy punch. The skin was too tough for me to masticate, and I have teeth like a piranha's. There was some sort of sauce that stained the rice brown, but for the life of me, I can't tell what seasoning was used. Not soy, not hoisin, not beef gravy mix -- I'm thinking maybe brown food colouring with some corn starch? There was a decent amount of chicken, I'll give China Bar that, but the only thing that had any flavour in this dish were the peanuts.

I'm kicking myself for not reading Urbanspoon reviews before wasting my money at China Bar. The negative ones are right. If I had known it was a chain, and that Camy's in the next shop gets better ratings, I would have gone there. You should.

User reviews. Service is too quick for a bar although the value for money is great the prawn dumplings are delicious ! and the rice and lemon chicken was massive such a big serving for a cheap price and very tasty. the service was okay very fast paced and only downside is we were handed water with no glasses and it did take a long time for someone to help us with that ! there is such a wide variety of food will go back here soon

Possibly the Asian shop with the worst service. Rude, force you to squeeze with others when there are other tables around. A pity because the food is quite decent actually, and that they open till past midnight.

Inconsistent food and service!. Ordered Hainanese Chicken over rice here and they only gave me like four pieces of dryed chicken!! It's so dry that it didn't even taste like proper Hainanese chicken i had in other China Bar resturants, didn't bother to give feedback because of their poor service. I was a huge lover of China Bar but definitly won't come back to this one in Box Hill, the one in Glen Waverley is much better.

Consistently Fast, Cheap and Good. Lunches only, if you can handle consistently no smile, fast, good and cheap Asian Hawker menu, then this is the place.

Perfect for a quick meeting place, plenty of fried and soup noodles, Roast & BBQ Pork and Roast Duck.

Can't go wrong .... quick trip down those Hawker centres in South East Asia.

The most discussing good I have ever had from the china bar chain.
The pork chops where dry like cardboard and tasted terrible and the bean curd which should be soft to melt in your mouth was on a sizzling plate and hard like leather and couldn't be separated with a knife ingredients were missing in comparison to other china bars and the duck congee which usually comes in a large bowl was plain congee with a serve of duck with bones on the side. I wonder if you ordered seafood combination would you have to shell your own prawns before you put them in? An experience so memorable no doubt it will be the centre of conversation between my friends and I for many months to come

Despite the comments here I had a great experience. My chicken was perfect. The service was fantastic. Thank you China Bar

Good Enough to Fill the Stomach. What more to say? It's not bad but it's not the best I've ever eaten but all items are fresh, generous in portion and tasty with fast service.

Cheap, go for the food, not the service. I have been to this particular China Bar a number of times as it is just down the road from my work. I have always found the food to be amazing, even if the Hot & Sour soup seems to be getting hotter each time I or my partner orders it. Yes, the service could be improved, you are seated, your order taken and you get up to leave and pay, but hey that's fine by me. The food comes out quickly which is good when you need to get back to work, or need to get somewhere else, and the there is always plenty of food for the price. I find that the food at this China Bar better than the one in the city. I have never had a problem with the language, never thought it was dirty, or felt that I was being treat as if I didn't exist like others have mentioned. If you want a friendly, beck-and-call service, I suggest you go to an upper class restaurant, if you want good, fast food, then this is the place

Haven't been here in ages but good food. I always have yum cha because I can get it at night! Beancurd skin pork rolls, scallop dumplings and their range of Asian drinks are impressive!

Oily, greasy, dirty, bad service. Food is absolutely terrible and the service is just as bad.

The atmosphere of a self service checkout. Food 4/10, service 2/10, atmosphere 2/10. From the moment you step into the restaurant, you feel as though you've just been put on the assembly line. Tell them the menu number, a plate will be slammed on your table, and then you pay. All done by their robot workers without a hint of eye contact or any interest in your presence. The food was laden with salt and other flavour enhancers when it came out, and my meal was constantly interrupted by staff feeling the need to fiddle with the condiments and cutlery on my table, without acknowledging my existence. It seemed they had to share the bottle of soy sauce around with everyone. I wouldn't have thought there would be a soy sauce shortage around Box Hill. But maybe they're saving their money to buy a personality chip for their employees.

Cheap and always open. This isn't a place to go for a fancy dinner this is a place to go to have some food , some nice cheap quick food
before or after drinks doesn't matter they will be open.
easier to order by numbers then words, personal favorite is roast duck and crispy pork on rice and for $9.80 who can complain.

The Peking Duck is awful and a waste of money. Apparently the skin isn't meant be crispy, they must have got it wrong lastime I was in Beijing.

Just crap.

Worst experience ever!!!!
Waiter couldn't speak English. The whole place looked dirty. Food came out and both meals (chicken & beef) were off!!!! The meat stank like it was a year off. Yuck. Never ever coming here.

I recently went to china bar for dinner and it was one of the worst experiences ever. The waiter didn't speak English well at all and it was too busy and all the tables are too close together. Food was average and I didn't get what I wanted. There was a guy there that looked to be the manager and he was the rudest person. Didn't even look at me or talk to me as I paid the bill. My brother also recently had take away from there. The fried rice was full of oil he had to strain it out and that still tasted disgusting. Would never go there again, disgraceful !
