Review Fifty Birds - Box Hill

Nice small charming place with owners running it. Didn’t like the coffee much(wasn’t terrible) but it made up with the food. We ordered a big breakfast & it was awesome. Seems only quality ingredients was used.

It's a nice little place for breakfast or some coffee. Food was okay, but most importantly to me, the staffs were very kindly with good manner. Chef was flexible with the food I ordered which I was thankful. I'd visit there again if I'm in the neighborhood.

Had a great time here. Visited during COVID restrictions were harsh and after they were lifted, but the great service was still the same. It feels like home because the staff are very warm and welcoming. The food is also the best! I am no fan of lamb, but they made me come back for more. The service was very generous for it's price! How I wish I had a picture, maybe the next time I come. 🤤😊

Attentive and kind service. Just like home cooked food and great coffee. Highly recommended.

Very cute cafe and dog friendly with a water bowl outside. The food was a great but a little pricey, which is to be expected considering this is Melbourne. Would definitely go again

Great to see this local Cafe still open for Business. It’s an important part of our local community, and people are supporting them in these tough times. Always great coffee and friendly service, well worth getting out for some exercise and grabbing a drink and something to eat at the time.

Friendly, family-run small biz with delicious coffee. Great range of food available for lockdown takeaway meals also.

Given that this cafe is located across the road from a school, you would think that they would be embracing Mums with kids. This was not the case when we visited. Never have I ever been spoken to so rudely by a cafe owner/employee. When visiting this cafe with my two children, a friend and her two children, the cafe owner, half way through our food and drinks, asked us if we thought the cafe was a childcare centre and accused us of scaring away his customers. At no point were our children out of control, yelling, running, throwing food, standing on chairs, or anything that would frustrate a cafe owner. We were not ignoring our kids and letting them do as they liked in the cafe. To this po int, no one had tried to come into the cafe, or even walked past. We were wanting to support a small business after so long in lockdown, but walked away feeling that we had not only been verbally attacked, but very unwelcomed and disrespected.

Great local cafe with really friendly service and delicious food! Only issue I've had is that on more than one occasion I've gotten the wrong order (e.g. Regular bread instead of gluten free). But other than that it's a great little place :)

Cozy and warm place to be, great and friendly staff!

We just had the loveliest time here. The coffee and milkshakes were delicious and the chocolate caramel slice... the best! Thank you!

What a great new edition to the community! Excellent decor, comfy cafe with an array of sweet treats to tempt the serious sweet tooth. All house made. Perfect menu with a changing specials board. Eggs benny, French toast with baklava ice cream and Spanish baked eggs are sooo good!! Fantastic coffee served by the charming manager/ barista. Very happy to call this new cafe my local :)

3.5
We chose 50 Birds cafe as the midpoint on our regular Saturday walk. Grabbing a take away coffee to sip while continuing the walk. There was a little queue going as so the barista was under the pump but coffees were delivered quickly and we were on our way. Kellie raved about her strong almond latte and I enjoyed my regular skinny latte also especially with milk on the hotter side. Handy to home so will probably make this journey a little more regularly.

Coffee at Fifty Birds Cafe is great. Love that they have a range of milk options. In terms of food, it's pretty average. The Spanish baked eggs had way too much sauce and no substance underneath. The chicken focaccia was very simple and ordinary (chicken bread spinach mayo). I think having more salads added to it like avocado and tomato would be good.

Instagram @flabnbone_food

UPDATE 30/10/2017.
Even better .... even for non Vegetarian .... had a bite of their $11.50 Foccacia Vegetable, I must admit it was great, Pesto and all ..... Also their Vanilla slice.

Latte still need works ....

PREVIOUS
Good find .....

Another "interesting" hidden little cafe in Melbourne leafy suburbia.

$5.50 for a slice of Choc Brownie and a regular Latte is a great buy in any currency for Melbourne cafe.

Must check out their Menu soon. JT-18/10/2017.

I've always had a penchant for those tucked-away or hidden cafes in suburban streets and Fifty Birds is one of them. I found it by simply following the garage sale-like cardboard sign along Canterbury Road. Simple.

Love the coffee and decor. Simple menu. Not extensive. Friendly service and the chef was also the de-facto server. If I had the spare cash I'd love to buy in this street just to be next to this cafe Irene Susilo

A little corner café, pleasant rather than sophisticated, residing in a quiet back street of Box Hill. The décor consists of an exposed brick wall, polished concrete floor, and a white colour scheme with grey highlights. There are timber benches and tables, decorative cushions, and several outside tables. The menu is not extensive, and includes fairly standard fare, with some vegetarian items such as the vegetable polenta bake, smashed avo, and the vegetarian focaccia. This visit I simply had a croissant and coffee. The coffee was good, the croissant average. The service was friendly, and efficient. Not bad for a small suburban café, but being tucked away, it didn’t seem to be doing a lot of business (on a Sunday morning - usually a peak time).

Good coffee good snot block........sorry; vanilla slice. Found Fifty Birds by accident ( killing time before dentist appointment...shudder) worth the detour off the main road😎

When we arrived at "Fifty Birds" - Wasabi the super pup could have been forgiven for thinking there'd be some birdies to chase! But alas, no!

But tell you what, we trotted in at least 5mins before opening time, on a Sunday morning, and the coffee machine/barista were both ready to go. We saw them walk in 5 mins before! How???!

They leave the COFFEE MACHINE ON - OVERNIGHT. Ready to go 24/7.

Service: we LOVE the friendly, happy couple that served us. SO nice. SO genuine. (We spent considerable time trying to convince them to buy a Whippet. That's how you know we like you, hey!)

The coffee was strong, good. But, the coffee was a tad OVERDONE. Maybe, the milk was a bit overheated, which affects the taste.

How do we know? THE SCOOP TEST.. With a great coffee, you want to scoop the froth from the bottom (it's kinda sweet, even with no sugar.).

Not today, but it was still a lovely coffee.
Went with my bestie. Mocha was good but not so much the skinny cap. Ordered the special menu an omelette and Sicilian scrambled egg. Taste good. The portion is big so the two of us (girls) can barely finish. The food is a bit oily overall.

I actually paid my visit to 50 birds for 3 times for the past 3 months . They have really good vanilla slice & carbonara. The chef is really good . Drinks was average but love the atmosphere. It located in a really quiet place , but I really love to spend the time here .

Sadly the potential of the location has not been maximised with this cafe. The coffee is average and the food overpriced for what you are getting when there are other sensational Cafes a short drive away. We have given it a few try's because it is our local but sadly this ones a no go. 🙁

Great food and coffee in a relaxed friendly atmosphere - always have something diary free for my daughter. The poached eggs are excellent and they always have a wicked selection of cakes! So lucky to have this cafe close to home!

Happened upon this hidden gem whilst out with the grandchildren. Very welcoming staff, clearly used to accommodating children. Generous sized milkshake, delicious iced coffee made with 'real' coffee not syrup, and the baby chinos only cost $1 complete with a freckle and marshmallow. Didn't have any food but what I saw looked great so I'll be back to sample it soon!

Lovely little cafe with plenty of outdoor seating. Staff were lovely and very accommodating, they had run out of some menu items but offered alternatives. Good coffee and reasonable variety of food for a small cafe

So near and yet so far from the food and beverage chaos that is Box Hill - and all the better for it!

Dropping the big FIVE here. Friendly, as unpretentious as you can get. You can see this start up has had some serious money spent yet they're not ostentatious about it.

Welcomed as I walked through the door. Nice uncrap music. Thanked when leaving. These guys have it right.

I went the Pulled Lamb bun amd a soy latte. Both done "Kellogs" - just right.

Highly recommended.

Seriously good cafe.. a shame my partner is moving away from box hill area and wont be making this a local! Hidden away in box hill this small cafe makes some seriously good food, i had spanish baked eggs (best ive ever had) and my partner had an avo smash which she really liked. The coffee was really good too only thing was wouldve loved more bread to dip in my dish!

A good, honest suburban cafe that's not trying to be too much. Warm, genuine and caring service greeted us and continued until we walked out the door. Nice Greek touches with the menu. A good new local.

Really great little cafe, the coffee is amazing and the food is just as good :) Ive been many times, and my favourite meal is the spanish eggs! They were absolutely delicious! I would definitely recommend them to anyone who goes there. The staff are very friendly and it has an all round great atmosphere. I think this is a great new addition to the area! :)

Sleep deprived? Go down to Fifty Birds and score yourself a good quality coffee (the large size always does the job for me). Such a great staff that are very easy going. I go to this cafe all the time, I practically live here.

Cute little cafe, tucked around a Box Hill South side street. Friendly staff, great coffee & good variety of breaky on the menu. Hubby had the 'big breaky' and was full afterwards (a good sign). I had the homemade toasted granola... delicious (when I could find it amongst the hugely generous serving of yogurt on top). As previously mentioned, they're seem to still be finding their feet somewhat, but it's worth a visit, especially if you're a local!

This cafe has the potential to be wonderful. Unfortunately at the moment it is still finding its feet.
To start, the coffee is bad. Really bad. I don't think it's the beans but the way it's made. we witnessed the young gent not really frothing the milk (no noise) and just warming it up. This was probably the reason our lattes tasted as though they had been made in a microwave. This can certainly be improved with a bit of training or a full time barista.
When the cafe first started selling breakfast the dishes came with all the trimmings. Now, poached eggs on toast don't even come with margarine. Very plan and dry. Again, this can be improved quite simply but putting a little thought into each dish offered and its presentation.
Lastly they really need to hire another person and have at least three staff on at the one time: one barista, one cook and one waiter. It will get too hard for them during busy periods to have the barista also serving and cleaning up, especially when diners are sitting waiting for their coffees.
All in all, not a bad start but absolutely needs improvement if they want the locals to keep returning. In the fickle Melbourne cafe scene ones which don't step up generally don't last unfortunately.

A new little gem to a neighbourhood desperately needing a great coffee escape and finally we have it. The owners/staff are attentive but not I intrusive. I gather most of the cakes and biscuits are baked on the premises - I've sampled the lamingtons and vanilla slice - superb! I hope the locals discover this little hub and if you do, spread the word.
