Review Noodle Kingdom - Box Hill

Jojo Yang
I ve tried many lanzhou ramen, including the big franchise that has stores in some shopping centres. But this, is something else! Could smell the soup fragrance infused the place when I was waiting for my dish. And it is the BEST Lanzhou ramen I have ever had! The soup was soooo tasty and fragranced. The handmade noodles were soooo soft! And the size is big enough for two. My partner had a stir fried noodle dish, and it was really nice, too! Thank you, noodle kingdom! Please keep up the quality because we will definitely come back!

Super tasty fresh hand made noodles. Noodles had a lovely firm and chewy texture. Above average service (for a Chinese restaurant in Box Hill). Recommended.

Amazing! Me and my family go there almost every week and it is superb. The dumplings are delicious and the noodles are top notch. This is a great cheap eat and it is worth your while as it is great value and really cheap. I would definitely recommend Noodle kingdom to EVERYONE as I believe it is the BEST Chinese restaurant in all of Melbourne. Make sure to order the Fried Pork dumplings (a personal favourite) as they will knock your socks off. So Noodle kingdom is a must go for all Chinese cuisine in Melbourne.

To be frank, I was a customer who went this restaurant quite often before, my and my wife's favourite favourite dish is the Authentic Lanzhou beef noodle soup. We only order this in the past years. We could say this is the chef recommendation! However, we went here again twice 3 weeks ago and found this Lanzhou beef noodle soup was been changed in not only quality but also quantity. I assume the owner has changed because their menus are changed, waitress and waiter are all different now. Feel sad

Cheap and quick eat. They hand pull the noodles in front of you and lots of food for your dollar. Highly recommend to anyone in the area who wants a nice delicious bowl of noodles or stir fry.

There should be full of this "goodness" in the Kingdom... With a name like that we do expect extraordinary Noodles, unfortunately they are below average. We've ordered a couple dishes; Lanzhou Beef Noodle, the soup was bland and tasted off. Beijing Noodles, bland and oily, you get the drift. the restaurant wasn't busy at lunchtime, 2 staff on the floor and yet ordinary service, not interested. Disarray and dirty restaurant too. Won't be hard to find better noodles within a few doors away. Trust the proprietor understand that Melbournians loves their noodles and there are a lot of places that offers great noodles.

Foods traditional and nice. But there is a really stupid thing they do which is that they cant switch noodles??? Its infuriating like I just wanted a lamb fillet soup without having to have spinach noodles and I just wanted to classic noodles. Like how hard is it to change up noodles. They straight up just say no can do .

Authentic Chinese food. All made fresh on site. Noodles are made out front of restaurant by skilled workers. Recommend the beef dumplings. So good.

I can't believe they could take our money and give us cold dumplings! The food was horrible. Do not order here. Waste of money. ..............

Wow, can't believe this is not rated more highly. Had dinner here ordered dumplings and noodle soup. Delicious! Noodles hand made on site. All our group were satisfied. Big servings! Good simple restaurant and affordable.

Well, the food is alright.. my bf and I quite like the taste and the fact that it is not expensive relative to the amount that we get.. so I give 3.5 :) but the service could have been improved:
1) the waiters do not greet the guests properly nor offering drinks or any kinds of services normally found in restaurants esp this is not a fast food restaurant
2) the drinks are self-served.. which is a bit weird since this is supposed to be a full-service restaurant, not fastfood type
3) one of the male waiters play with phone while serving.. well this is a small thing but it shows that they are not trained well

Extremely bad service!!.The worst service I have ever experienced, including lots of worldwide travel. You are also risking your health if you eat here. Table was very dirty, seat was dirty and needed to be wiped clean before I could sit on it, and I nearly fell over when I slipped on some split oil on the floor. (which I noticed other people also walking in the spilled oil/food).Also the table next tome was filthy. The food shows potential as it has some nice spices that remind me of home. However the service is by far the worst service I have ever experienced.Have been there a total of 3 times in the last year.(went there 2 years ago and was happy with the service).Since then things have gone down hill. The girl/female who makes the noodles in the front window seems to be the only hard working and professional staff in the whole place.Last time we were there we witnessed the guy/male who makes the noodles go out the front for a cigarette and then walk back in and without washing his hands start to make the dough for the noodles using his dirty hands. The food that came to us from the kitchen out the back, was cold, and not fresh.I appreciate under the guidelines for writing a review we are not supposed to single individuals out, however in this case I really believe it is warranted. The waitress called TANG LINPING was more interested in walking around dancing to the music and playing on her phone than taking anyone's order. She forgot to place my boyfriends order, and we waited more than 30 minutes and then after asking another staff member we got to the bottom of the problem. She plain out 100% just forgot to place my food order. We noticed an Australian guy come into the restaurant and was turned away because no one could speak English to him and take his order.Really don't like to talk bad about a place, however our experience here has been very bad each time and we won't be going back until we see the staff have changed.(I would much rather take an extra 30 minute drive and go to the Preston Noodle Kingdom). Preston noodle Kingdom is clean and has fresh food. And won't get sick from eating there, unlike Box Hill Noodle Kingdom.

More interested in Uber Eats orders than sit in customers, rude and slow service. Food wasn't terrible, but service threw it all off.

Will not go there again.

In one word this place is...disappointing. My partner & I have been going here for years & we've noticed a serious decline in the table service & cleanliness of the restaurant. Additionally, they changed the menu recently, which now has a serious lack of noodle dishes (silly, seeing as it's called 'Noodle Kingdom'), they've also jacked up the prices. But mostly I'm devastated because they scraped my all time favourite dish of wonton noodle soup. This WAS our easy-breezy $20 dinner place, but no more, we shall not be returning.

I must say that it's one of the worst dinning experience that i have ever encountered. They have changed the menu and not much choices. We have ordered two noodle dish and one bun, waited 45mins for the bun (it's not even busy, empty restaurant). I've asked for small bowl for sharing, the waitress told me that they don't have any aprt from kids plastic bowl. Weird! Won't be coming back again!

Got their lanzhou noodles with deep fried pork chops and egg. Have to say that their noodles are good, but let down by their broth, which was tasteless. The pork chops and egg were alright. Cheap food, but do the job of filling up the tummy.

Been there many times, my boyfriend loves their beef noodles but I don't. The portions were great, flavor was just average.
Except noodles, a kind of lamb ribs serving with rice was pretty good, sorry about forgetting the name.
However, the restaurant was not clean enough.
BL
Ordered the Lanzhou beef noodles, the soup wasn't hot enough which was disappointing. Got the steamed pork dumplings and the deep fried chicken with chilli, both were good but wasn't outstanding. Pretty average place.

I came here on a Tuesday night looking for a quick feed after being out. Noodle Kingdom was one of the few choices available at around 9.30pm at night (opted to not go to China Bar).

On arrival, nice and clean restauraunt (sometimes rare in Box Hill) and friendly staff! We sat down and ordered quickly and was soon met with our food.

I had the beef and brisket noodle soup ($11.80) and was very happy with my meal! Obviously it wasn't 10/10 quality but it definitely wasn't bad. The brisket was very tender, the broth was really nice and the handmade noodles were also good. Not to mention the servings were EXTREMELY generous (I only got through half of my noodles). The soup was a bit oily, but I kind of like mine that way. My friend had the pork chop and egg noodle soup and basically finished the whole thing.

For a late night feed i'm quite impressed, i've been craving some cheap hearty chinese food and this hit the spot.

Might come back again!

It's a busy Chinese fast food restaurant, alway crowds. The noodle is firm and dumpling skin is firm as well. They are all very nice. I like to order the seaweed and dry bean curd, they are only 1 or 2 dollars per dish. The beef stir fry noodle is a bit oily , but tasty. It's a good place for quick meals.

Terrible service, mediocre food. Don't come here!
When we came in, there were 3 wait staff and only 3 tables occupied. The 3 wait staff were more interested in standing around chatting than taking our order. After a good 5 minutes of trying to attract their attention, we were finally able to order.
2 other tables that arrived after us got their meals but our food didn't arrive. One of the waitresses came and asked if we'd ordered already. We asked her to check on our food, and she came back and asked us what we had ordered. Clearly they didn't put our order through at all. Another table that arrived after us got their food before we finally got our food.
The food was pretty average. Definitely not worth what we went through. Should've just walked out...

The food is okay. I came here with a friend a while ago and we shared fried dumplings which were very good. Tonight, I came with two different friends and we ordered some five-spice brisket with rice, some weird smoky soup with 'lamb', dumplings in 'spicy chilli' broth, and broad noodles with beef and chopped vegetables. Everything was all right, except the 'lamb' didn't taste like lamb, the 'spicy chilli' broth wasn't very spicy, nor flavourful, and my noodles were very difficult to share on account of being so long. The chopped vegetables on the noodles also looked like they were from canned soup, and I had to add chilli oil, vinegar and a little bit of soy to make it taste less bland. I would come back again, but probably only for dumplings. The main dishes were good, but sort of cold and not really the best Chinese food in the world, let alone Box Hill. We also got a cold side-dish of soy beans and spinach and it was much too salty for any of us to finish.

I went here with friends tonight for dinner. The food was nice but not the best I've had in Box Hill. We wanted to order eggplant as a cold dish but they said they didn't have any so we just had beans and greens which I've had elsewhere, the Noodle Kingdom version was really salty so we didn't finish it. I got braised beef brisket which was yummy and a big serve however it looked sloppy and it was Luke warm. One of my friends got long thick noodles which tasted nice but it was hard to share. Another friend got this interesting noodle soup with thick cut up noodles and it had a smoky broth, I liked that. We also ordered the spicy dumpling soup and it was a bit bland but it was nice when I added more chili oil and vinegar. The servings were sooooo big and I'm sooooo full, I'll remember this if I come back. The people working here were nice enough, it was nice to get a smile as we were leaving. We saw the eggplant that we wanted at the beginning of the night had just been made up as we were leaving.

What happened? Previously a few months ago you were great albeit average service; today I went for lunch and the dish you served had sour off-tasting cabbage disguised under the noodle sauce. Really wondering what happened to the quality as it has declined noticeably since last year.

I always order the same dishes when I come here, but the staff are incapable of communicating any languages other than Chinese.

Tbh, this issue turns me off from coming to this place.

disappointed with what we tried, but maybe we picked the wrong dishes. hot and sour chicken noodle soup (supposedly very spicy, but not) and spicy lamb noodle soup (not spicy at all). plus the tofu salad which was either OTT in salt or sadly msg. I believe the later, given my thirst. don't get me wrong, i''m not anti msg, but heavy handed with anything, unless balanced, is not my fave. The lamb soup base was tasty, but the hot and sour wasn't that great. miss 5 on holidays, a new spicy venture tomorrow night. suggestions appreciated!

There are two Noodle Kingdoms in the city, but did you know that there is now one at Box Hill? There is and we talk about our visit there. Noodle Kingdom is on Station st , right around the corner from the station. Here it was busy on a Saturday night until around 7:30pm and then it became quiet. It is known for their handmade noodles and dumplings. They are also known for their big serves. I still remember reading in the paper about the problems that the Russell store had with mice and all. But here there is no such thing, except for the longish wait and staff who don't understand English all too well.
Foodfun
Amazing value for money! Specialty is definitely their noodles (beef brisket and lanzhou beef mmm) which are hand made! Their pumpkin cake is deliciously chewy! Their dumplings are average (skin is a bit thick but still good!!) I come here religiously, so not sure why they get such a bad rap
Faye
Cheap food. Massive serving. Quick service. We had dumplings and noodles and both didn't disappoint. Extensive menu, lots to choose from. Not bad for a quick winter dinner.

Yick, we just ate here today and I might be actually suffering from a bout of food poisoning. Ordered beef noodles and xiaolongbao, plus 2 side dishes. To be fair, the noodles were quite good, but the meat that came with it tasted like its been chemically bleached or something. It has the same pungent odour as the pork tripe, which definitely seems like it's washed by some strong inedible chemical. Now, I have vomitted twice already, hopefully I can get rid of that chemical taste in my mouth. The xiaolongbao was so dry and tasteless, thankfully no weird chemical odour, cause my baby ate it.

Anyway, to add insult to injury, the staff members were all mean, and they're tossing the dishes to your table and gave us an old bottle of water.... Stay away from this restaurant.
Bek
Yuk!!!
Meals took ages. Mains came out before entree. My meal was inedible. Covered in cumin seeds which was not on the menu. 2 others sent their meals back while we were there. Did not offer to recoil or refund. AVOID!!

The glasses looked ok, but when we wiped them with a dry napkin, the napkin was BLACK! How can you enjoy your food after that.

Oily food but noodles/rice portions are huge!. This place is somehow runned by Mainland china workers but they served huge portion of food. For the price of around $10, even 2 people can't finish the noodles or rice on the plate unless you are bottomless pit eater! The noodles and rice dishes are worthwhile to order even for take away as you can portion it for 3 times.

We ordered the Fried Chicken with 5 spices and it turned out to be super oily, filled with batter and nothing special. The service is average and price is ok. Don't bother ordering the dishes as they turned out to be oily and battered. My suggestion is stick to the noodles or rice dishes- worth it and cheaper!

Disappointed second visit. Ordered the zha xiang mian... Which in menu flagged as level 2 spicy. Came with no spiciness at all. Whats going on...?

Good Value for money. We went there recently, and made the mistake of ordering 2 main courses and 2 entrees, as the sheer volume was way too much, but we managed to finish it

You get the typical Asian budget priced service, sometimes a pout, sometimes a smile, sometimes a "what are you doing here?" look.

We ordered 2 dumplings and 2 noodle dishes. The dumplings were good, the first noodle dish was good, the second one being the more expensive seafood fried noodles wasnt all that great. No real taste, quite oily. Overall it was great bang for buck and would recommend it

Big serves, cheap, tasty food, fast service, just great

I have been here many times after finishing work, and always have had the dumplings and noodle
Soups!! I love noodle kingdom!!

Weird experience. I experienced the worst possible service ever, no customer service, could talk english but didn't no what we wanted. The food was weird below average. I didnt realise how bad it was until I went home and my intestines almost came out.

It's a noodle shop, not gourmet. I had a job interview in the Box Hill environs that went well, so I reckoned I'd treat myself to lunch there. When in Box Hill, one should eat Chinese, eh? The first time I lived in Melbourne, I heard so much talk of how Chinese Box Hill has become. But after living in British Columbia, Canada, and experiencing the city of Richmond there (a satellite town to Vancouver) I have to say Box Hill is not nearly as Asian-dominated as other places in the English ex-Empire.

Noodle Kingdom had a descriptive menu in the window, prices were cheap, and it appeared clean inside. I like it when I'm the only gweilo dining in a place, as I was here. It's true that the waitstaff were not gushy-friendly and asking how my mum's arthritis is doing, but I go for the food, not to be a guest on "Oprah." My food was served quickly. I've always gotten fast service in Chinese restos. Maybe they want to get my pasty face out of there in a hurry.

I ordered "Beef and Veg on top of Hand Made Broad Noodle with Spicy Oil." That's a mouthful of a name. It was also a mouthful of a dish for $9.80. There was an adequate amount of fried beef strips, properly cooked (i.e. not over-boiled) green beans and onions, shredded zucchini, cucumber and carrot -- healthy stuff. The Shanghai-style noodles were OK, a bit of chewiness to them, but I had better in Vancouver, where the noodle culture is fanatical. The menu showed one red chile pepper by this dish, and it had enough heat that I only had to add a little oil from the Szechuan pepper container. The only clinker was the pile of diced tinned garlic bits that was dumped in the middle of the dish. They had an chemical-ly taste that overwhelmed a lot of the other flavours until I stirred them around to dilute the effect. And the four vegetarian spring rolls I had as an appy must have come from a frozen food service pack. They were deep-fried perfectly, but had little flavour. Not worth the $4 that item cost.

Quite Fresh. Noodles are fresh and hand made, I've been here a few times quite like the noodle and soup dishes, dumplings in soup also quite nice.

Decor's a bit nicer than most other nearby too... would definitely recommend.
Mugi Naka Nei
Worse than terrible. The service is unattentive and ruins any atmosphere. The obvious dissatisfaction and apathy of the staff would surely taint the food. Tried to charge me corkage, but not willing to provide a wine cooler or even a container with ice...left in a hurry. I could walk through a war zone and get brighter, more obliging service. Just awful!

Our family came here after a long night. The food was comforting and service was polite and quick :)
We loved the cold appetisers that were quite cheap in price; meaning we could order a lot more variety.

Were we at a different restaurant? Our experience was fine. I had the Schezuan Pork Noodle Soup. Initially i thought the stock was a little mild, but when the intensely flavoured toppings were mixed it it was just right. The fresh noodles were very nice indeed. My son had sweet and sour fish on rice. He liked that too.
The service was fine and the serving sizes generous. We were in and out very satisfied in 40 mins.
Makan Sedap
Utterly horrible food. I ordered a bowl of "pork dumplings in hot and spicy soup" while my husband had a bowl of "pork chops and egg in noodle soup". How we wished that we didn't patronize that eatery! Informed the waiter that the soup tasted horrible and he brought me a bottle of "Black & Gold" table salt! The dumplings are not worthy of my stomach space while the noodle my husband had was tasteless. He also said that the pork chops were dry and bland! We would never go back to Noodle Kingdom!
Ange
Good service, massive meals (one serve would feed three), very limited vegetarian options.

Absolute slop served on a plate

This story is titled, "The worst restaurant". Gather round kids, it's time for a story!

Once upon a time, A family, heading out on a journey for some Asian food. On the way to the restaurant, the oldest of the kids said "can we just have KFC", the mum replied "No, KFC's disgusting!". This family arrived at box hill and started to look at which restaurant they should dine at that night. After a few minutes of searching, they stumbled across noodle kingdom. "Lets eat here" said one of the children. "Ok" said the Mum and Dad. The family walked in and sat down in their surprisingly uncomfortable seats. After talk about what to order, the family told the waiter what they decided they were going to eat. After taking the family's order, the food arrived almost immediately. The family wondered "I wonder how much effort they put into preparing this meal for us". The family went on to eat the fried rice they ordered, only, they hadn't got what they expected! Instead of ham, the family was expecting, they received little cubes of processed meat. The next meal was some beef and Shallots! The beef was un-chewable, it was so bad, that 2 family members ended up spitting it out! Next was the Squid! It was so chewy and had no taste! Now the family realized why the food was prepared so quickly. The family was sure that their meal could not get any worse... it did... The dumplings were tasteless and watery. Yucky!! Aren't the dumpling supposed to arrive before the meal? The family cancelled their next order and left the restaurant. A lucky family out side was warned by the family that had just dined here! They were saved from the disgusting food that the family (who had dined there) had experienced! On the way home, the oldest said "How's KFC looking now". The family arrived home and all had a glass of 'Eno' (A drink for relieving upset tummies)

Moral of the story, don't eat at noodle kingdom.
Dr MS
Didn't stay for dinner. They took forever to bring out the first few dishes. the wine glasses were dirty, and they wanted to charge us 4$ corkage per glass. the deep fried calamari was raw- a dish as basic as that! the dumplings were bland. the service was terrible and we walked out before ordering dinner.
Rebecca
Great experience - surprised at the other reviews!. My husband and I went there on a Fri night, food was great, we shared a noodle dish and some dumplings. The Szechan noodle dish we had was especially good and kinda cool seeing the noodles being hand made in the window. We'll definitely be going back. Cheap, good and cheerful!
Ganaman
If there's ever been an Asian restaurant that's disappointed massively , this is IT. It took 15 mins to get dirty wine glasses. Then came the spring onion pancake which was decent but uncooked in parts. The straw that broke the camels back was the deep fried calamari that was not deep fried - eaten raw calamari ? I have now !! Asked for the bill before trying the dumplings and left. Never to return.

Terrible food. We frequent resturants regularly but here, the food was bland, oily and tasteless. Very dissapointed.

Friendly service! fresh food, big serve!!!

Handmade noodles were nice but forget the dumplings. Had the authentic Lanzhou hand made noodles, which tasted quite nice and noodles were fresh and tough like what I would expect from hand made noodles. Forget the snacks though. I had the chicken pan fried dumplings and it was sooo salty, and not crispy. I think they are recooked. The chicken filling looked a bit red like it was not properly cooked. The vegetarian spring rolls were large but again very very salty. I also had the vegetarian and mushroom steamed buns which were tasteless. Seems like the snacks are either extremely salty or tasteless. Noodles were nice though and waitresses were very friendly and polite for an Asian joint.
KT
Friendly staff. We went here for an all-you-can-eat deal, and was more than satisfied! The dumplings were larger than normal but they tasted great. The only downside was the time the dishes took to come out.
Sonya
I loved it. The dumplings were so tasty and the sizzling plate are highly recommended. Very fresh and the staff were very friendly

Soooo big!! Great taste!!! Fresh noodle and dumpling!! U can see the chef is making the Nnooddllee

Anger management. What is more relaxing than to visit Box Hill to have some 'noodles and dumplings' - Noodle Kingdom!
Yummy Yummy Dumplings more fit for the third world tastebud, what a great place, don't get me wrong, the dumplings wasn't so bad, ordinary and average dumplings, nothing special though. Just don't expect quality food.

Customer service? What? What is customer service? Apparently the customers are the one that are meant to be providing their own service hence 'Noodle Kingdom customer service'. Approach to grab a table, the boss with his faceless impression like he just lost all his money from gambling welcomes you. Here you are greeted by Waiters that seem to be soldiers landing on Omaha beach. Only that they just rush through without thinking and forgetting their orders.

Instead of tasting good food, you taste the negative impression of the owner like a guard dog ready to pounce on any intruders or ruin your beautiful night out with less than average food you can easily find closeby in other stores.

Worth a try, just make sure you don't end up in anger management yourself. Not hard to make yourself grumpy like them when that's how they treat you.

Only go there if you have an hour and a half to spare for two dishes - a total ripoff. Hubby purchased scoopon deal.So much for wanting to try something different. Have never been somewhere and waited so long. Would normally walk out after waiting an hour for spring rolls and dumplings. Service - that is another story. Waited another half hour for next menu dish. Ordered extra couple of dishes off the everyday menu and they never came within the hour and a half there. No real variety and rather oily. Can only order two dishes at a time and take forever to serve and almost seems like a ploy that you will leave in disgust before eating and not getting your moneys worth. Absolutely terrible. Will never return and unfortunately any one who asks about our sunday lunch will be told the truth. Very bad press for this unbelievably bad experience. 1 waiter ok the other should have been somewhere else. No plates were taken until 15 minutes later as we ran into other diners who also told us how disappointed they were. Never again
Stiffy Johncock
Service was terrible, waiters are rude, food is reheated, flavourless, fatty rubbish. To top it off the chilli container looked like it hadnt been cleaned in weeks. I will never go back
John
Waiters are mute... ordered 4 things without them saying a word. Food is bland.
Joycie
My boyfriend and I went to the one situated on station st. It was one of the worse meal I've ever had in my life. For a noodle kingdom, the noodles were very disappointing. It was doughy and just overcooked. The meat sauce was really mushy. Their dumplings were just caked in oil. My friend also went there today and she got served dumplings with raw pork still inside, no apologies was made to her either! I don't know if I got them on a bad day but I wouldn't go there again or recommend anyone to go.....

Walked out, horrible...... The service is terrible, the waiters are useless and the food is bland.......
Walked out after 55 minutes and getting only a plate of dumplings.....don't bother there are so many other wonderful restaurants in Box Hill I don't know how this one is still open.
AW
I ordered the Lanzhou beef noddle soup which is shown on the cover of the menu but it turned out like a plain boring looking noddle soup. The soup is tasteless and it doesn't look good at all. This dish suppose to be the signature dish of the name of the restaurant ! I asked the waiter how come it looks so different , his response was " yeah " and then walked away. My partner ordered the pork chop rice dish , it was very plain as well, the pork was dry and not tasty. However the serve is big but what the good of it if the food is not tasty.
Sarah Butler
Got a 'scoopon' for all you can eat from their snack menu. Dumplings super filling. Only managed to have 6 dishes, one of which was donuts for my daughter. Service was ok: had to remind the waiters for everything! Several times. They were just young men in a busy resturant. Would like to try the other food not on the scoopon menu...

Recommend for casual dinning. The dumpling in spicy soup is great

Now called Ramen King.
My favourite dish here is the Fish in spicy szechuan sauce.
You'll be surprised at the colour of this dish! As long as you don't eat the chili, it's not as hot as it looks.
