Review Mihali's Tavern - Box Hill

Liz hantzinikolas
Just got home and damn my feet are sore. Food and staff were fantastic. Music was excellent and non stop making it so we had to keep on dancing until we were out of breathe and giddy with that feeling that only dancing and singing to Greek music can give you. They only took one break all night contrary to another review. Also contrary to other review I found the food quite tasty and not oily. I am glad there was no dressing on the salad because there were so many other flavours. It was nice to have something to cleanse the palate. To top off the night Mihalis himself sang a few songs. Oh and they catered for a vegetarian in my family bringing her a huge plate of stuffed peppers and roast potatoes. And what makes me qualified to give this review. I am greek. I owned my own restaurants. I am a great cook. Ask my family of six. I have an entertainer in my immediate family who thoroughly enjoyed herself. I would go every weekend if only my feet allowed it.

Dinned here recently for a work Christmas function and having been to numerous establishments for various work engagements i know how a satisfactory dinning experience should be like, sadly Mihalis Tavern was very much under par. First of all the food was very light on and many of us left still feeling hungry, staff were unfriendly and not overly attentive, we were refused to play music in the venue any louder then a whisper, and at the end of the night we were kicked out the door well before they shut. They pocketed a large amount of money for people who didn't attend the event as we had to pay in advance and we received no extra satisfaction for this money. At $55 a head I expected much more then what was provided. Will not be back!

I recently (May 2013) had my birthday dinner at Mihalis with friends and family. What a night! The tavern has been recently renovated and is looking very good! The food was great and plentiful and the service was very friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. This was the best service I have ever experienced at a Greek tavern. The band was fantastic and we danced well into the night. We were one of the last ones to leave. Thank you Mihalis for a memorable night thoroughly enjoyed by all.

So the one thing that's missing from this potentially really great idea for a restaurant /tavern is the effort in food and entertainment. I agree with a lot of the people who have left reviews that the service is great, but what is service when the food being dished out is either too oily, too dry, lacking flavour or been sitting around a kitchen for far too long. Yes, the foods being served is traditional Greek cuisine, but whoever is cooking it has either no idea about cooking or simply can't be bothered doing their job any longer. Zero substance and zero love in making food always equals zero flavour and zero satisfaction on the taste buds. The dips were very tasteless and old, the fried Greek sausages were so oily that the oil may as well have been served without the sausages, the meatballs were over herbed and spiced which made them awful to swallow, the calamari was deep fried and again someone forgot to let them sit for a few minutes to drain the oil from them, the salad (ironically enough) had no oil or dressing, the bread could have been cut in a lot more smaller slices (it was almost as if each loaf was sliced in 4 big pieces), the chicken and beef meat platter was so dry and hard that it felt like razors down my throat, the prawns were hard as if they just came out of the freezer, the muscles were definitely not fresh and even the potatoes were drenched in oil and over cooked. So the desserts come out and just when I was hoping that it would end well, the Turkish delights were so rubbery that even my Turkish friend was disappointed. The baklava was ok but obviously not made at the tavern (that's why it tasted ok). The entertainment could have some order and the live band should take fewer breaks. Each medley went on forever and it sounded like one big mashed up messy song each time. Whilst I might sound overly critical there are 3 things that I am that qualify me to make such a review, a damn good cook, a lover of Greek music and food and Greek! This place has a heap of potential and I was pretty excited about going, but as I said, zero effort and no love in the place. I score it a 2 out of 10!

I dont even give this place any stars. Just had too so it could post! Firstly, the menu on there website is incorrect and you won't get anything near it! My family and i were celebrating a milestone birthday when the gentleman there that happened to be the 'Manager' called Steve. not only walked off on us when we asked if there was something else to accommodate someone who didn't eat much but also had a verbal argument with us not understanding us as 'paying' customers. $55 a head including abuse was not on my agenda tonight. He also mentioned that 'customers do not come first..' and made us not only feel intimidated but definitely would not be coming back to this place.

This would have to be one of the best Greek venues I have ever eaten in and I have been to a lot, Great Food and lots of it, Great Service - very attentive. All the staff were very competent at what they do. Cannot rate them higher than 6 stars but would if I could.

This is not a review but I've been trying to call this place to book a function but the phone number must be incorrect as the recorded message states. <br/>

Magnificent service plenty of authentic Greek food and the music always superb. Plenty of room to dance and party. If you looking to have a function with a Greek twist then you can't go far than this beautifully appointed Greek tavern. We shall be back !

If you're looking for good Greek food that's value for money.... I would recommend taking a trip to Oakleigh. Came here for dinner the other night and the food was bland and expensive. Will not be back!

Heart warming experience!. Starting with the phone call to book the venue to celebrate our mum's 80th birthday, the promises I receive from Steve were all fulfilled. The warm welcome on arrival by Sophie and Steve the delicious and very generous servings of food the live entertainment too good to resist from joining in on the dance floor. Nothing was too much trouble for Sophie and Steve in attending to our requests. And to finish off the night we were entertained by Mihalis the chef who cooked up the delicious spread of food. After finishing up in the kitchen he took to the dance floor with the microphone and with his heart warming voice in song. Thank you Sophie, Steve and Mihalis for making the night so very special as we celebrated our mum's 80th birthday! Well worth the trip from Bendigo.

Best Greek Tavern I have been too. Recently I organised a night out with friends to this Greek Restaurant that had been recommend by a friend of mine it was a little out of the way from where I live however WOW it was worth the travel we were greeted with a smile at the front door and welcomed which made a good impression right away it's nice to feel warmth from a restaurants hospitality upon arrival. We had the banquet which was plentiful and amazingly tasty, the Lamb, sausages, garlic prawns taramasalata dip and calamari were to die for. I must add that the service was top notch all night and the music was so much fun such and entertaining. Thanks to the guys at Mihalis we will see you again very soon.

Great food, generous portions, attentive staff. Came here a couple years ago for my 21st and all the guests were so impressed by the food and service that it wasn't even a question where we'd host my dad's 60th. <br/><br/>THE FOOD: served banquet style and in absolute abundance. special mention goes to the seafood - tasted really fresh. We're a family of seafood lovers and this is some of the best i've had in Melbourne - both in quality and quantity. Some venues will skimp on the more expensive seafoods, like oysters, prawns etc, but we couldn't even finish the platters at Mihalis. The king prawns were especially great and the meat lovers raved about the lamb even weeks after the function. <br/><br/>DRINKS: beer and wine were included in the set menu. The staff were incredibly attentive to ensure everyone was satisfied with drinks. Never had an empty glass! <br/><br/>ATMOSPHERE: live band and dancing was a lot of fun for all the guests from 4 years old right up to 70.<br/><br/>STAFF: exceptional. A very special thanks to the team at Mihalis for being so attentive to all the guests, especially the elderly members. The Mihalis team helped out with wheelchairs, ensured the elderly were located close to restroom etc.

Was expecting more. I was really looking forward to the banquet as what was described on the website looked fantastic. I left very disappointed and hungry as the servings were tiny and in most cases not fresh tasting. The only thing I enjoy was the seafood but there wasnt enough served to satisfy. Been to quite a few greek restaurants around and found Mihali's a let down. I wont be back.

Ripped Off!. I'm not sure who has been writing these glowing reviews of this restaurant because what I experienced was quite the opposite. The one thing I can say there was an abundance of was bread, but at $45 per person it soon went down hill from there. Portion sizes were small and the freshness of the food has to be questioned. Misleading menu on the website coupled with awful stale tasting vegetarian options had me wishing I'd taken my money and spent it down the road at a decent restaurant where I wouldn't leave feeling hungry and having wasted over $100.

Have been here twice for work lunches and both times the set menu was varied and tasty. Definitely recommend to try if you have a large group.

Alcohol (beer wine) included in the set price menu! How can you go wrong! Lots of Greek dancing! Great night out and looking forward to going back soon.

We celebrated our sons christening last week at Mihalis Tavern. The venue was fantastic and Steve was very helpful and made everything super easy. The staff were great, the food was fantastic and plentiful. My big fat Greek family were very impressed and we all had a great time. The jumping castle was a HUGE hit with the kids. The day was a great success.

Very disappointing. Used to have great food a while ago. I went on Sunday and the food was very bland and uninspiring. Portions were also stingy.

Awesome!. We had our daughters christening here and we were SO impressed. In fact for weeks afterwards we had our guests commenting on what a fantastic venue it was. Food is AMazing & plentiful, service impeccable. Nothing is too much for Steve. Completely recommend Mihalis. One of the BEST taverns I have ever been to!!

Fantastic!. We've had both our childrens' christening receptions here and highly recommend it. Steve is great to work with in the organisation stages and nothing is too much trouble for him on the day. The food is always beautiful and there is plenty of it. The rest of the staff are great - always polite and courteous. Could not speak more highly of this place if you're looking for a taverna.

Impeccable.. If you want fine dining then go to the Sofitel, but if you want quality at a good price then this is the place. The food is in a banquet style with more than enough and the lamb and chicken off the spit is amazing. The service is attentive and friendly and there is a great Greek band playing so dancing is a must. This place really jumps and its not a wonder with the recipe of fantastic food, fantastic service and fantastic entertainment that Mihalis have developed over many years in the Restaurant business.

Good value. For $55 full Greek menu and wine, beer and soft drink included, not a bad night. If you enjoying Greek dancing definitely a venue to go to.

Since the renovation everything about Mihalis is wonderful! Had a great Saturday night, the set menu was divine, the service impeccable & the entertainment fantastic, great place for a function or a great greek dinner dance night!!

Fantastic venue for a party. I had my 21st here on a Fri night in May. The staff went above and beyond with their service. I was expecting guests to get all their drinks from the bar, but the staff went around and made sure everyone's glass was always full and that everyone was well fed. They were particularly attentive to the needs of my grandparents and other elderly guest.<br/><br/>The food was also top notch. There was a dozen or so finger food to choose from on the cocktail menu. The next morning, I actually received numerous text messages from friends telling me they craved more of the homemade lamb sausages. Personally, my favourite was the mussels florentine.<br/><br/>I was also really grateful that the venue were very reasonable about how late people could leave. They remained really friendly even when a few tipsy stragglers at the end of the night wanted to stay on the dancefloor!<br/><br/>The venue looked absolutely beautiful at night with the candle-lit tables and dance floor lights.<br/><br/>Thanks to the team at Mihalis! I'll be recommending you to anyone else hosting a function :)
Dave
Good entertainment. Didnt like the food here very much. More of a night club than restaurant or tavern. So i guess their focus is on entertainment which is ok if your after that.

Fantastic service and food!. We celebrated my father in laws 80th birthday at Mihalis tavern. The service was exceptional and the food and drinks were in abundance! They were even so accomodating with my sons special dietary needs!<br/>Would certainly recommend it to anyone who is looking at having a big feed, great warm service and lots of Greek dancing!

We had our triplets christening at Mihalis on the 29th of July. Well what can I say it was the best night we had we had 220 people the food was promt and plenty full and delisous the service was fantastic starting with Mihalis in the kitchen, Stephan and his team at the front of house. I can not rate this place high enough if you wanting to book a function look no further!! Thanks guys for an awesome night!!!

Great Night. My son Pete and his fiancé Niki had their engagement party at Mihalis Tavern on March 18th 2012.<br/>What a FANTASTIC night, the food was absolutely yummy and lots of. The music was great - dance floor was always buzzing. And the service - what can I say.<br/>We had great feedback from everyone that attended, and have been highly recommending this venue to everyone.<br/>Again thank you for all......<br/>Effie

FANTASTIC TIME. What an awesome Greek tavern, had an amazing night. The service was outstanding and cheerful, food was very appetising and did not disappoint. The music was sensational with all the latest Greek hits. The atmosphere was a buzz with everybody enjoying themselves, what a great night, highly recommended will definitely be going back!

Tennis team; fun greek night out.. Heard about this Tavern because of an 'Elvis Night '.<br/>This place really rocked that night. Didn't think Elvis was Greek! However, because Mihalis restaurant was very clean, with fast service for a large attendance and plenty of free parking; we thought that we would try the Greek Tavern night. So my tennis team and families went another night. None of us are Greek, but really enjoyed the greek style cuisine ('a plenty'), ie: dips / entrees, lamb & chicken. The wives were very happy to dance Zorba to the very tallented bouzouki player, while the men lamented tennis. Didn't understand a word of the greek female vocalist, but she was really entertaining as well.<br/><br/>You won't be dissappointed.
