Absolutely delicious, cannot believe the serving size we received tonight. Very happy! Much left for tomorrow’s lunch! :) 10/10
the best and cheapest fried rice in box hill. Good options Aesthetically, it's basic but who really cares.

All the classic Chinese comfort foods can be found at Wong’s Lucky Bar. For years, we’ve consistently visited this little joint located right next to the box hill tram stop. Whether it’s their crab noodles or hainan chicken rice, these classics never fail to hit the spot.
My personal favourites are the combination hor fun and beef hor fun (flat noodles). These two dishes pack so much “wok hei” (aka flavour of the wok ~ a unique charred kind of taste reminiscent of what you’d find in Asian street food stalls).
Recently, under the circumstances of COVID-19, my family has taken to ordering takeout here almost on a weekly basis. The prices have remained surprisingly low and the food is consistently good.
This place continues to churn out reasonably delicious food at competitive prices. We usually order takeaway from here and while some of their dishes can be a bit too oily, they all taste consistently good.
This time around, we had the fried chicken ribs, sweet and sour pork ribs and sambal water spinach. For a change, we also ordered the bitter melon with pork. This was surprisingly tasty.
Situated slightly away from the busy part of Box Hill, it's easy enough to get to and service is always efficient.
Previously:
This is one of our regular (and reliable) restaurants in Boxhill. Absolutely no frills but reasonably priced dishes and large servings make up for that.
Their chicken ribs are always well seasoned and expertly fried. Our all time favourite dish is their long beans with XO sauce. And a close second is their sweet and sour pork ribs.
We have been getting take away from this joint for many years and the quality has been amazingly consistent. It's a sunny day every time I walk out of the restaurant!
Mud crab was great. We ordered only 2 serves of noodles with the crab (for the 4 of us) which I think was more than enough. (Any more will cause the crab dish to be too bland). Pipi with Chinese donut dish was flavoursome and it goes so well with rice. Seafood tofu clay pot was our next pick for the night.
Ordered a wide variety of dishes- my favourite was probably the sweet and sour pork - it was super crispy and I loved the sauce. The veggies were really fresh too
We also were given some free fruit and some red bean soup which I loved!!
Absolutely loooove the snow crab!!! That tofu was AMAZING and I just cannot stop eating them. The service and staff are so great as well! We will definitely come back again! Only one thing that they have a bit more sur charge on card so it’s better to bring some cash with you!
You can’t judge a book by its cover... These people know how to cook great food. We go there regularly for chicken rice which is amazing. It’s a must try when in Boxhill located at end of tramline
My overall favourite place for a cheap and cheerful dinner in Box Hill. I absolutely love their fried chicken ribs, pork mince & eggplant and beef black pepper steak. Service may not be super friendly but it is fast and efficient. Love that each table has tea and serving sizes are generous. I’ve actually never tried the crab or lobster here but it always looks amazing!
Cheap and good. $21.80/lb for crabs. Tasty and succulent crabs. Have had lobster there too, and very reasonably priced. Be prepared to queue unless you go during off peak.
Every time I want some quality dirty Asian, this is my go to joint. Fast but typical angry Asian service makes me feel right at home. Cheapest crab noodles around. Highly recommend the tomato beef rice and Hong Kong style pork chop rice. Don’t be busting to go to the loo though cos they only have a public boxhill portal toilets. Expect dirty surprises if you do use them.
Think of cheap and yummy food here but not so much of a high level of service. They are popular for their mud crab and lobster dishes. Had the mud crab noodles with ginger and spring onion and it was really good. Another favourite is the pippi with xo sauce and chinese donut.
Cheap and tasty. Don't expect anything like a premium dining area because this place is just few rows of tables and chairs. The kitchen being visible from your table means you get to hear everything that goes on there. Food was good, price was good and the service is above average for a typical Chinese restaurant.
Very casual dining spot next to a busy road in boxhill, this place is apparently famous for its crab but we didn’t have it on this occasion.. However in saying that the dishes that we had were really very good, it really had an authentic spin to it just like street food one would have in Asia.. a place that I would visit again to try its crab dishes..
Why did I wait so long to try Wong’s Lucky Bar?!
If you normally default to ‘rice and 2 dishes’ in the food court, do yourself a favour and order the Hainanese Chicken Rice at Wong’s. For the same price and service time (2 mins or less!!), you’ll enjoy a generous helping of Singapore’s national dish. Delish!
A good place for chilli mud crab or whatever flavors you wanna choose from. Price is reasonable. Won’t be a long wait either. Always a full house. Should check it out.
I love coming here for a Cantonese meal. The crab here has always been one of my favourite dishes , very fresh and also priced very well ! We usually get the dried chilli crab or the ginger and spring onion ! All other dishes are flavoursome but the main star in this restaurant is their crab !
I wish I could give this place 10 starsss.
You get what you pay for here. One pound of crab is usually varied from $16.80 to $20.80. But oh boy, their dried chili style cooking crab is just so so delicious. I often get flat rice noodles on the side to go with the crab.
Other dishes that I would highly recommend are:
- Salty fish fried rice with chicken
- silky tofu dish
- Pipies in xo sauce
YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS GEM!!
Excellent and quick service, amazing food selection, and the Hainanese Chicken Rice and Satay Beef on Rice are simply AWESOME! Definitely making this place a regular visit. Generous portions and very well priced. Forget the rest, this place is the best!!
I haven't been back there for nearly two years. Finding parking nearby has become a problem, but the food is still tasty and the price is great. Finally I managed to park in Box Hill Central tonight and got a takeaway of my beloved Combination Fried Crispy Noodles for $12 - cheaper than the BBQ Hill on Station Street. The noodles, seafood and chicken pieces were cooked just right and not over seasoned like many Asian takeaways. Great value!
My wife and I went here the other night. The food was really tasty and so affordable. It was also really quick to come out. We didn't order a seafood dish but we will next time as it looked so good.
Most underrated restaurant in Box Hill. The restaurant decor is not something to look at, but the food however is excellent. Reasonably priced and tasty food. One of my favs in Box Hill.
Fair price, cheaper than another famous seafood restaurant in Box hill. Lobster is very worthy to try. , juicy and delicious, you can add Chinese noodle with lobster.
A great place for tasty and affordable priced asian cuisine. Always packed with sometimes a crowd waiting outside to be seated, this place is the real Asian deal. The crab noodles are great, long beans, pipis in XO and the other dishes have always been delicious on our visits here. Spacing is a problem but service is quick. A no fuss quick, tasty and satisfying feed if you’re ever in the BXHood.
Told by friend this place cooked fresh and cheap lobster. Been here on a quite Sunday night for dinner, easily to get seats but fully packed very quick. Lobster was fresh and cooked perfectly. Green bean with anchovies is popular dish in this place, anchovies are crispy and not too salty, the dish also mix with crispy bacon/chinses sausage, beautiful flavoured, will come back to try the crab. The downside is this place is cash only, had to go to ATM get some cash.
Best lobster noodle ever. I don't often go out to have lobster noodle but that one occasion where I was craving for some crustaceans, it hit the spot right on. The damage was $220 and the portion was enough to feed 3 ppl. You can always let them know you want to add more noodle. The lobster is seasonal price. A friend told me that it's cheaper compare to lobster noodle at other places.
Had some dishes with rice and they were good too.

I came here again, this time trying their Mixed meat and peanut congee, and I was surprised to see 2 prawns included inside, which is nice. The decor of this place might not be so good, but the food is good and reasonably priced, hence it is always busy at lunch time.

The Hainanese chicken rice is marked as a recommended/signature dish on the menu and it didn't disappoint. The chicken was soft and smooth, hardly any bones.
Good ol' Wong's Lucky Bar, this place is located at the last tram stop of Route 109, smack bang in the giant median strip of Whitehorse Rd! What a crazy location, love that!
The food here is delicious authentic Chinese, and fast-paced! Ideal for takeaway, bit less so for eating in. Have to say that I wasn't a fan of their lobster noodles, which is what I'd initially heard raves about. But I am obsessed with their fried chicken wings!
We had the crab noodles a while ago and the salted egg fried chicken. Pretty tasty and good value for the crabs when on special and the fried chicken was nice but could go with more salted egg taste.

Really enjoyed tonight's meal, we ordered lobster noodles, crab noodles, clams, deep fried calamari, and spare ribs. The lobster and noodles were full of flavour and although pricey well worth the money. A must try if you're into Asian food!
As one of the many Chinese joints in a relatively competitive area, this is a relatively good food reasonably priced place.
We had the pipis, sambal kangkung and fried noodle.
The wok fried dishes were delicious, though the msg is not light. Beware, those that has allergies.
Read a lot of reviews that seemingly did this joint is for crab, although we didn't try, we thought the place seem appropriate for crab if you are familiar with the Malaysian roadside restaurants joints that sell crabs.
Generally quite happy with the food. Don't expect too much for ambience or service. It is reasonably good for the price.
Wong's Lucky Bar is situated directly on top of the 109 tram stop at Box Hill Central. Being located here has its perks, as hungry high-school students often use this route on their way home. Serving mainly Cantonese cuisine, Wong's Lucky Bar has become quite well known for their incredibly cheap prices and filling dishes.
This is the place that my family and I come for cheap and yummy Chinese food. Whenever we want yummy Chinese food especially crab and lobster dishes this is the place we go.
Recently we came for dinner and had; lobster with ginger/spring onion with noddles, xo sauce pipi with Chinese donut, xo sauce crocodile meat, stir-fry abalone, and stir-fry spinach.
The food were nice, tasty and generous potions too.
Although service is lack of but price was reasonable too. The total for the above plus 4 serves of rice was only $211.
We had a pleasant takeaway experience from Wong's lucky bar! We ordered chicken rice and it was delicious. The chicken was perfectly cooked and of great consistency amongst the whole order. They gave us generous servings of their onion and chilli sauce (both really good - you just want to keep going back for more). I was really full and couldn't finish my own box. The order pick up was smooth too - the staff happily helped load the food and were well organised before the pick up time.
If you have seafood allergies please look away right now. However for those with a love of anything shellfish and an EpiPen at the ready please do pay this restaurant a visit.
Wong's Lucky Bar might just be the most affordable place for authentic Cantonese crab/lobster noodle dish in Melbourne today.
Came with 3 other friends sat night and ordered 2 pounds of crab, 2.5 pounds of lobster (Both stir fried with ginger and spring onions with 2 noodle cakes each) and stir fried pipi with XO sauce on Chinese donuts.
The most important thing for a tasty crab/lobster noodle dish is the extreme heat from the wok and the machine gun stir fry action from the chef. Shellfish meat is delicate and if overcooked it just turns into mash.
Both crab and lobster dish came onto the table piping hot and oozes with the juices from the meat. The meat is sweet to the taste and falls apart in the mouth both showing freshness and the stir frying skill of the chef. The noodles acts like a sponge sucking up all the yummy juices and in my opinion is the actual star of the show.
The stir fried pipi meat is also crunchy in the mouth from the wok's heat and the XO sauce dipped Chinese donuts will make the most hardcore Kripsy Kreme fan jumping with happiness.
And the price? $150 in total and the 4 of us walked away each with a mermaid in the belly.
Any bad pointers? Well it is not usual that you will find a seafood restaurant in the middle of the road surrounded by tram tracks so the exhausts from bypassing cars might be off putting for some if you are sitting on the outside tables.
There is also no toilet onsite so you might need to wear adult nappies if you are planning to stay for while (There is a public green loo behind the restaurant but use it only as a last resort due to the severe high usage rate).
All dishes are also a little on the salty side (Just let the chef know to go easy on the seasoning).
Otherwise for a tasty seafood treat at this price point Wong's Lucky Bar is hard to beat.
Came back with a friend for their crab noodles and pipi. The crabs are charged according to pound~ $18/pound. Portions were generous, but expected to pay.
===============================
Love the Hainanese chicken rice at this store. The rice was fragrant and the soup has the right flavour. Chicken was moist and tender. The waiters were attentive and you pay after your meal. Cash only.
Would be back to try their popular crab noodles next time.
Inconspicuously located at the Box Hill #109 tram terminus, this place is nothing much to look at but the go-to dish here is the Hainanese Chicken Rice. It comes out very quickly and is accompanied by a side-serve of soup as well as lashings of chilli and spring onion oil in the serving dish.
I marked this place down 1/2 a point because the dish is getting to be a little on the pricey side at $9. When it first opened it was only $7.50!
That aside, casual group dining here is something to try with some of Melbourne's most affordable seafood and shellfish on offer.
I've been referring to Wong's lucky bar as the "Hainanese Chicken Rice Place" since I first started eating their $6.80 chicken rice years ago. It runs like a typical box hill Chinese restaurant - the place is loud, cramped, not too clean and with no interior decor. Service is acceptable, staff are efficient and do their job but there is nothing warm, friendly or outstanding about their service. Hainanese chicken rice is now $9 but it's still their specialty - chicken is boneless and perfectly cooked, comes with lightly flavored chicken rice to have with sauce, and the soup is not bad for an MSG one. Compared to many other places, the chicken rice is cheaper, and chicken is better cooked and doesn't have bones. Because it is their specialty, you can expect to receive the rice around 5 minutes after ordering, no matter how busy they are. Haven't had too many other dishes here because I mainly come here for the rice, but I know the laksa and the crab noodles are also very popular. I wouldn't say it's my favorite restaurant, but I can say I don't go anywhere else for my Hainanese chicken rice!
This is the first time i have been and even know this restaurant is here! Its located on whitehorse road in between the 2 way traffic. Small restaurant but fast service. The lobster noodles was huge and delicious. Very very good value for money. Every table had crab or lobster noodles so i guess it must be their signature dish. Will be back again.
Nice small cosy restaurant that reminds me of Asia street stalls.
Very busy and people are in and out every 30mins.
Seafoods fresh and cheap.
We ordered and our food came out quick, except for one plate, but the young boss was on to it straight away and it came out in not even 10 minutes when we told him.
Great no frills restaurant where the service is quick and the seafood is fresh.
Do: the crab. Must do the crab. Dry or wet. Both are good.
Don't: wear anything white. Will be messy. Have fun.
Tip: sit "inside" inside. It's hilarious. Cash only.
Since everyone is commenting about seafood (yea the standard really isn't stable), so I'm going to highlight other dishes. Try the pepper shredded steak and golden chicken ribs - they are hits. I'm a regular in past few years and those standards are well-maintained.
The crab noodle was nice.. Lots of peoples ordering crabs.. and some of the foods were also good.. good price as well.. and the service not bad.. worth to go there and try.. It's our second time.. to be here.. and surely will come back for more..
Great place to get some authentic tasting chilli crab. Don't come here expecting great service or a nice quiet place to eat. You will not get that. What this place lacks in service and ambience it more than makes up for it with the food. ENJOY!

Let me set the scene for those who are not familiar with Wong's. It's location is on the median strip of Maroondah Hwy as it traverses through the busy hub of Box Hill with traffic rushing by on both sides. Being on the median strip, it shares it's presence on this narrow archipelago with the tram terminal. So one could have literally one foot at the tram stop waiting for the tram and the other foot inside Wong's ordering take away. Wong's itself is narrow, no frills establishment. It is approximately 5 metres wide (if that). The owners have tacked on an extra 0.5m or so in width simply by building another wall one table's breadth away from the existing external window in order to fit in an extra three tables. Having said that, the food here is good.
Yep, it's totally dingy and cramped, especially if you get seated in the little corridor jammed on the side where you can barely walk past the table. Let's get this straight - you aren't paying for the ambience and/or service. What you are paying for is really well priced seafood. Crab noodles for $13.80/lb? I'll take it. And I'll be back for more.
Cheap and tasty. Cheapest seafood and tasty
Wong's Lucky Bar is the only Chinese restaurant that I know of which is situated on a tram terminal. It's a cheap eats sort of place.
The japanese tofu is well fried, similar to what I have back in Indonesia. I enjoyed this dish, its not too salty and there're good amount of seafood and vegetables. Japanese Tofu with mixed Vegetables and Seafood - $17 Overall rating : 7, they offer good food with good price. I want to go back to try their famous mud crab! The staffs were not really friendly but they did assist us well.
Great value for money. This place is worth coming for their special priced crabs and lobsters. The other dishes on the menu are also worth trying and are good value for money, most rice and noodles dishes are around the ~$10 mark and portions are quite generous. Great for lunch or dinner and is usually a top choice when in Box Hill.
Will always come back for their Lobster & Mud Crab Noodles. For the many times we've been here .... YES, it's not the most cozy, pleasant, clean, nicely fitted restaurant with poorly dressed uniform and imperfectly spoken English .... :-) then again I'm eating Chinese food, for what they are charging they actually provides great food, esp. those Lobster, Mud Crab Noodles .... and the usual Chinese fare, Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs, Tom Miaw Garlic (Chinese Spinach), etc. are tasty too .... and yes, the funny thing about people, if you take time to speak to these hard working waitress and waiter they are actually very polite, pleasant and nice to deal with. They saved my Father's Day Dinner after a very bad experience at a well known Cafe Nursery in Warrandyte .....
Their seasonal lobster/crab special are pretty good.
Tonight our experience at Wong's was great. Service may have been abrupt, but the food came out quickly and staff were attentive. Pipi in XO sauce - superb, pipi was SO fresh and doughnut was soft and soaked up the sauce. Singapore noodles - faultless, well balanced curry sauce and generous filling. Deep fried flounder was good too, but not on the level of the noodles or the XO pipi. Seriously, I was rather impressed tonight. 7.5/10 well done
Cheap and easy. I love the Chicken Curry Laksa here. Simply amazing for the price. 10$ and you will feel so full!
Good chicken rice. Probably has the best tasting and best value Hainanese chicken rice in the area - only $8, and boneless. Will have to try out the crab next time.
I didn't know this restaurant until my friend told me to go. Cause it's a bit hidden which located next to the tram stop. The dishes are really nice, ginger and shallot crab hit the spot! Sooooo good. And also if I'm not wrong its Golden salted egg ribs. It's the second best after the crab!!
Prices are reasonable I guess.
Foods came out really quick. Perfect for hungry tummy.
Less point is just is very small, so they have limited seats and you have to share your tabel with other people.
If you're confused where it is, it's just literally next to the tram stop. Also I suggesting you to bring cash there!
One of my fav Asian restaurant!
The dishes are very tasty, very good portion sizes, and good value for money
Had the Singaporean crab this time but the other styled crabs are very nice too!!
Had a great dinner with family n friends.. Fresh seafood.. Lobster n crab noodles are highly recommended.. great price too..
No bells and whistles. Just upfront good value lobster and mud crab dishes. Cash payment discount available too.
One of the best prices for mud crab around in Melbourne. But don’t judge them on price this place is super affordable, large portion, quick. We live in the area, and this area is blessed with endless choice of Chinese restaurants from cheap to expensive but this one will not disappoint. This restaurant is our choice for when we don’t know what to eat, they never failed us, the food quality is very stable unlike some place it’s nice one day and not another. If you are on the fence just try them out.
The best mud crab dish in Melbourne. Have been a royal customer for years, the dining environment is like street food level but it never affects the taste and quality of food there. It’s great to see the same staffs for the last few years. We have to say goodbye to so many nice restaurants post COVID pandemic. They must have a secret to not just survive but maintain the same standards after such hard time. It’s a very lucky bar👍🏻
