Review Petaling Street - Box Hill

I wonder why there are not many customers as other busy restaurants. Staff service was not even achieved average to be mentioned. We waited at the entrance as other customers. 3 uncles n auntie was just busy for no reason. No one wanna take customers to the seats. Took a while to get their attention to take the order. Sign... Food was good so please hire more energy with good attitude service staff to increase more customers.

Always consistent pick me up Malaysian Hawker food. Not great but enough to hit those cravings. Dishes range from ok to decent. Service is inviting and friendly
Michael Sell (DemonicLacky)
Great Malaysian food for a very reasonable price. Friendly service and fast serving.

I have been here a few times at different timings. I find that the service is better when you go in for an early dinner, rather than at dinner time (7pm) as the place is really crowded and sometimes has a queue. Ordered the sambal French beans, marmite ribs and sizzling hot plate toufu. The hot plate toufu was ok, I would have preferred the hot plate to be hotter, thus more sizzle. It was delicious though and we finished most of it. The marmite pork ribs was recommended by the staff as the menu only has marmite chicken. We were delighted with it and it was not too sweet and very well marinated. The sambal French beans was very delicious. One note to future customers though : one bowl of rice is a very big portion. So do share if you aren’t a rice fan. Big shout out to one of the lady staff who gave my child a Lolly as the child was not too happy with waiting for his food.

Nice Malaysian cuisine and staff were very friendly...

Lemon chicken was grey and looked freezer burnt, and was overall really unappealing. The people next to us had food that looked fresher, but ours was sloppy and unappetizing. (PW)

Ordered Char Kway teow from here and it wasn’t very good. Didnt have any wok air and the beef tasted unfresh. The cook was a young guy so I already lowered my expectations - just didn’t expect it to be so underwhelming. It has been many years since I visited this establishment and I don’t think I’ll ever return due to the poor and unauthentic taste.

I dont get the negative reviews here. The food is generous and flavorful, price is cheap and service is not that bad (quite fast, no fuss, free tea). I love their fish selection with different cooking styles. Their congee fed me for two meals (i took the leftovers home).
Long Phanh
Below average food, not worth the price. Staffs are rude, very unfriendly which makes you feel really uncomfortable.

Ordered Assam Laksa and Hot Cham here for dinner. Pleasantly surprised by the taste and quantity of the bowl of laksa. Just needed some extra har kou. Cham came served in a large tankard as well. Service was not the best, but was made up by the standard of the food.

The food is standard here. I like to come here for the fish though - it’s cheap and it’s tasty. Service isn’t great here but to be honest, I find that a lot of restaurants in Box Hill also don’t provide good service... if you’re wondering where all the tissues are, it’s in the drawer under your table! The only real critique I have in regards to the food is the $6.9 ‘Ice Chendol’ is not worth what you pay. It’s served in a glass cup instead of a bowl (not the same as the picture taken in the menu or on Zomato a couple years ago), so it’s hard to eat from and the flavour is lacking. (Im only comparing to the ones in Malaysia) **NOTE: No split bills. Cash only.

It looks like the golden age of Petaling Street is over. The drab atmosphere doesn't help whet anyone's appetite and on one of our previous visits, the whole place had a disturbingly unpleasant odour.<br/><br/>My favourite item to order here is the Thai style fish with rice. You get a whole fish (head to tail) that is always beautifully fried in a light batter then smothered with Thai sweet chilli sauce and assorted vegetables. It is also great value for money. <br/><br/>For today though, I had the vegetarian mee goreng which was nothing extraordinary. <br/>Service here is usually acceptable albeit sloth-like at times - get your skates on, people!<br/><br/>I used to love this place but it's been tarnished over the years.

This place was always bustling and we used to go here whenever we crave for cereal prawns. They also offer awesome fish dishes with various sauces. Only downside is most dishes are a bit salty.
Melanie (ForeverBrunching)
Great feed here the other day. Service was fast and polite, we went out of peak periods. The servings were very generous in size and good flavour. Stand out was the marmite chicken ribs which were juicy and flavoursome. The food is really great for the price
Pandamonium
Don’t order the fish fillet noodle soup!!! Thin slices (not fillets) of basa fish fried in a thick spongey chewy inedible batter, no joke it was impossible to eat. The broth is watery plain stock (if I’m lucky) with milk or something added to keep up appearances, such a strange flavour. The tomato so fresh and ham choy/preserved mustard greens so salty that it’s no wonder the soup tasted so bad, it must have been added to the finished dish last. Even the noodles were wrong, too thin, you could have at least given me that. Don’t put it on the menu if you’re not going to even try.

This is my favourite restaurant in box hill for after work dinner. Why? Order their fish head curry laksa and you will know, not to mention their great customer service and fast food serving speed.
Ahnaf
The Tom Yum Fried Rice was decent any they gave a good amount of it. The real reason for the 5 star review is because the wait staff were very nice and provided me with free tea. The place is very busy and waiting time it's quite high.

Was looking for Petaling Street after moving to Melbourne as I was religiously having it in Sydney. When I chanced upon it at Box hill, I knew I have to give it a try despite of the average comments given on Zomato. We ordered a SEAFOOD LAKSA, MEE GORENG and CLAMS (pipis) in XO with BACON SERVED WITH CHINESE DONUT (youtiao which is also known as ‘dough fritters’). The seafood laksa came with squid, imitation crab meat, clams, prawns and the highlight which were MUSSELS. Its the flavour from the shell fish that enhances the soup. Something that I couldn’t find in Lagenda nor Laksa King. In Singapore, the shell fish used was cockles. Also, the gravy has a hint of curry leaves which was the right asian flavour you will need to find in a bowl of authentic laksa. The others that doesn’t have it, I can only name them as ‘curry noodles’ to be honest. The mee goreng was still alright, not spicy enough as it was a little too sweet. The gravy that coats the noodles could be a little more. Clams in Xo sauce served with dough fritters was good. Fresh tasting clams with savoury gravy matches well. The dough fritters was absolutely delicious after soaking up part of the hot gravy. Dough fritters were crispy and fresh (as in doesn’t feel like they fried it and put aside for long time). Will be back again.

Worst Malaysian restaurant ever. We tried Laksa, Char Kway Teo and Mamak Mee Goreng 3 of the main Malaysian dishes. The Mee Goreng was a alright Char Kway Teo has no sense of Malaysian food just like Chinese stir fry flat rice noodle with some soy sauce n oyster sauce. The portion is quite big. Laksa seafood was very curry taste I never ever feel sick of laksa like this. It's absolutely terrible and "Imitation crab stick" in a Restaurant ? Customer service was very bad the waitress threw the dish into the table and walked away. Farewell guys !

One of my go to malaysian restaurant whenever we’re bored of trying something new in Box Hill. I’ve come to this place for a couple of times and they never dissapointed me. My personal favourite is their clams with chinese donuts (I’m so sorry I forgot to take picture of that since we’re super famished) and their fish (just ask them which one is the most popular one). We usually eat them with rice but this time my friends wanna also try their fried rice. They didn’t disappoint us at all. The price I think is quite affordable and they have a pretty large place, so you don’t have to worry of queuing to get a table in here.

Petaling Street definitely does provide value for money, they have a large variety of dishes to cater to all. I've been to many of their franchises and found that the Box Hill outlet stands out from the others. Staff may have a hard time understanding you & the place could definitely do with a clean up but they are the only negatives I've been able to deduce from Petaling Street. My last encounter at Petaling Street, I came with no expectations, it was late and close to closing time so I'd made peace with a disappointing meal but oh my god was I wrong. $15 here goes a long way.

Very bad experience! They did not change the menu which tells us the description of a dish. We ordered a fried rice but bcs theres a lot of option for fried rice, we decided to choose one based on the description/ingredients they wrote on the menu. However, they gave us a diffetent fried rice with different toppings/ingredients. We asked why is it different cause we wanted the ingredients (chinese sausage, and other stuff) and those things are not there. The staff replied "oh, we didnt have that ingredients at all". Okay so they didnt have the promised items in the fried rice. We're okay with that but just disappointed cause we wanna pay the price bcs of the promised items on the description. Basically its another fried rice on their menu which is cheaper and did not have other good items/ingredients/meat. They didnt tell us the items were no longer exist yet they still CHARGED us based on our fried rice's price WHICH CLEARLY is not the same fried rice!!

Fair price with plenty food. The food standards never reduce. I often visit this restaurant for lunch offers. LOL<br/>My boyfriend lives Hainan chicken with coconut rice.

We ordered fried telapia, a plate of clams, some greens, a bean curd dish and rice. Fed four people for around $65. Everything was delicious and fresh.

I always come here because of the fish and fried keow tyaw. The portion is big and value for money. They are open til 12am most nights so it's a good place to go after night shift at the restaurant.<br/>The service is ok.

Went with a big group of friends. I had been to the one in Glen Waverley and liked it, so thought this would be good. However, i was disappointed compared to the Glen Waverley one. One of their waitresses was taking our order and she did not to seem understand any question we asked, eventhough she speaks english. But what is irritating was not her not understanding, but her attitude. Everytime she does not understand, she looked annoyed as why do we have to ask so many questions. Later on the dishes came out except this chicken dish for a long time so we asked about it and it turned out they forgot to put it in order in the first place. Food was okay, tastes the same as the Glen Waverley branch but smaller portion. We ordered our favourite sambal okra and marmite chicken which were crowd pleaser and clams with xo sauce and deep friend petaling sauce fish, both were just ok. They also did not tell us that some dishes came with rice so when we paid there was a bit of confusion. Oh, and they dont even know the name of their dishes because we have to point to pictures when ordering and when the dishes come, they cant even tell us what dishes they are until they asked the kitchen.<br/> <br/>We went here again when I needed a laksa fix. I usually have my laksa at China bar which is delicious, but thought will give this place a go and I thought being Malaysian restaurant, they cant go wrong. The price is slightly cheaper than China Bar's laksa, but generally taste is not a s good. It is rich with the coconut cream, quite heavy, but spices-wise, it does not hit the right spot. Portion is bigger though, and they are generous with their meat. So generally not as good, but cheaper and bigger portion so it sorts of compensate the taste.

UPDATE 4/7/2017<br/><br/>$9 lunch menu?<br/>How do they do it?<br/><br/>Less pungent, revamped a little, better food and plenty to choose from those 5 pages of A2 Menu with photos.<br/><br/>And cheap $3.90 Tsingtao beers ..... maximum three bottles per customer, okay, cheers 🥂<br/><br/>PREVIOUS<br/>Sometimes ......<br/><br/>Trading Hours;<br/>Sometimes Opened and sometimes Closed.<br/><br/>Food wise; <br/>Sometimes is okay and sometimes. <br/><br/>Value wise;<br/>Sometimes good  and other times not so good.<br/><br/>Venue wise;<br/>There's a constant pungent smells inside and always dirty. <br/>Always;<br/>BIG SERVE ....<br/><br/>What used to be La Porchetta, then Straits of Malacca (please correct me if I'm wrong), then a few owners. On the main esplanade of food in Box Hill, huge, high ceiling, two tiered dining level, mezzanine, open kitchen and okay service. <br/><br/>Just one always and too many "Sometimes" is not a good reminder to comeback .......

Decent congee. Had good amount of century egg but the salted pork was too strong and overtook all other flavors. Decent congee texture, it's not watery but not "creamy/fluffy" enough.

Never ordering drinks with my meal at this place... Drink taste like water with a pinch of flavour... Only get a 2 rating from me... People that works here does not serve the customer properly... The customer need to look into the waitress eyes or put hand up to get served... <br/><br/>Aside from that the food is a pass grade

This place is a great go to place if you want something good in an affordable price. My first experience with the place was some what disliking because the environment did not give me the vibe that this is a place to dine in. But i was shocked as to the food being really good and delicious. We ordered 5 different dishes and all served up to the expectation. I did wish the portions of the food to be a bit more, and the also the food did not come fast enough. Service around this part of the city is somehow missing, but this place proved it wrong by having good, smiling waitresses with kind and good sense of humour. None the less i know i will visit this place again to see if the rating i gave is what they deserve or is it just i felt that way.

Went for dinner- great prices especially for seafood options. I very much enjoyed the clam in spicy sauce. The drinks were very delicious! My partner ordered roti and chicken curry. He found the Roti to be too oily though it was crispy. For the price it was reasonable.

Nice Malaysian food. We love the Pipi special (curry flavoured one) and the sambas fried fish special with rice. Very good value for seafood.

Absolutely fantastic resturaunt, one of the only and first local resturaunts that I've discovered to have the meat on tofu toast, amazing food and great service.
Master Foodie
Delicious food and reasonably priced. <br/>Petaling Street serves Malaysian hawker style food located in the busy Asian strip along Station Street Box Hill. Hidden behind the multiple posters covering the shopfront is a very large restaurant with ample seating. The ambiance is very casual and decor is extremely dated and feels grubby, but this adds to the Hawker style atmosphere. Food was fresh and full of robust Malaysian flavour, there was definitely no scrimping on ingredients. Servings were large enough to  share or take leftovers home. Service was good and was in line with the casual atmosphere. Price was relatively inexpensive given the extensive fish options on the menu.<br/>***Tried Petaling again last week November 2018 and they took the Singapore Crab off the menu! They have changed it to a smaller crab still well priced but not as good as the original one.
Jeremy Young
The Nasi lemak was very tasty and filling with all of the components working in harmony. I am looking forward to trying some other items on their menu.
Melbourne Culinary
Petaling Street is a name well known throughout the Melbourne suburbs. The Malaysian hawker style restaurant has multiple locations throughout Melbourne, including the CBD's Chinatown and Glen Waverley's iconic Kingsway.

Come here quite a bit. Usually go with the malaysian butter chicken, marmite chicken, the flat rice noodles with fried chicken.<br/>As of late, the service standard has dropped, some staff are still friendly, then some are rude. When asking about a menu item that we had gotten the previous week, the lady sighed rolled her eyes and walked off to ask about the item, then came back with an attitude and answered our question. Then a male server, he was trying to act all cool, when bringing the food over instead of placing it down properly, he drops it onto the table, with some crappy attitude and a look as if he didnt care. This has prevented us from coming back as often as we normally would.

Had lunch here with friends and we love it! The pork was crunchy and seasoned well, the kamhiong clams was good as well, we asked for extra chinese donout and it really compliment the dish. The hainan chicken was awsome, tender chicken with well balanced sauce. Was a bit dissapointed with the kuey tiao as it was recomended by family member which sadly i think straits cafe still win for this. But overall very happy with our lunch, and definitely will go back to try the others! :)<br/><br/>4/6<br/>Had a late dinner with my partner, i ordered the fried fish with petaling sauce, my partner ordered chicken with butter curry sauce and fried rice, the chicken was awesome, my fish was very crispy but the sauce was overly sweet. Service was good as usual.

Disgusting. Went about 6 months ago. Tonight we went out of our way to give them another chance. And it was seriously disappointing. Hands down the most horrific experience i have ever had. Absolutely sickening.
Ronnie
Had the Nasi Lemak, which I found to be quite simple and ordinary - it was a good eat and served as one would expect ordinary Nasi Lemak. Service standard was ordinary, though tea was poured and refilled by the service staff, which was a nice touch. <br/><br/>The biggest turn-off, however, wasn't the food, but rather the tables / seating. The tables that have the booth seating (as opposed to chairs) were horrible to sit at, and unfortunately, most of the tables here have the booth seats. The table is too high / seat too low, which made the eating experience very bad and left me with a sore back afterwards.
The Portly Pumpkim
Hands down, best roti I've ever had. Nothing compares. Also the best Nasi Lemak I've had. The Assam Fish Fillet Curry (off-the-menu item) is amazing. I could eat it every day. Boyfriend loves the Char Kway Teow with Duck Egg. Honestly these items are so good we haven't explored much else on the menu, despite us dining here on a regular basis for over 18 months. Love it.
Abhijit Lad
one of the worst experience of my life staff don't know about the food we order hot (spicy) clams presented with sweet one , ordered  French beans served okra then 25 minutes for desert which we left but paid for it . when we asked for the bill never arrived so went on the counter got the bill with 2 extra items curry laksa and beef briskets which we never ordered so I bring it to attention but staff start being rude with us I don't know the lady on the next table probably manager or owner came on the counter and started conversation very rudely . is this how you manage your place ?????????? great keep it up
Cottonball♡
Very disappointed with their signature xo crab with dry noodle, crab meat tastes like its been frozen and thawed, the rest taste good as usual!
Jodie
I really like the food here! And the drinks are nice too, although pricey at times. The service is nice here and the cleanliness of the restaurant is good. Much better than the Glen Waverley one!
Kay
Very quiet place. Ready made lunch. Order, reheat and serve. Quick service. Luke warm meal. Well, what would any customer need/ want on a cold Monday?
Lancelthebard
I will give this Petaling more credit, since the food standard is stabler than the Glen Waverley one. Has come here 4 times since last 3 months now and nothing was seriously disappointing. <br/><br/>Recommended:<br/>Sizzling minced pork with Tofu<br/>Hainaness Chicken <br/><br/>I also like Hakka Style Pork Belly and Satay Beef Claypot but it's a little too salty for my friends.
Patrick Yien
I'm Malaysian eat out a lot. Ate twice here. For twice Food not fresh, added too much salt tried to cover horrible taste. I had two month full threw everything away. This place Put malaysians to shame.
Caroline Ling
Food was very tasty and salty. When we were eating the food, thought was one of best we ever tried. But after 1/2 hour later, we were all very thirsty and mouth felt weird and dry. Realised was The MSG after effect which lasted from lunch till late dinner. Drank a lot of water after the meal but didn't help and my poor children suffers too. Over kill In MSG. Waitresses were not friendly and they clearly show by their body language. Quickly finished meal and was in hurry to leave as feel not welcomed. <br/>

I just love this place. Am always sticking to my fav nasi lemak and/or beef rending w/ dry noodles... sometimes both! yes am a greedy gut! :) they have other outlets but I prefer this one as they have never got it it wrong when it comes to nasi lemak and my curry mee. The clayton one has mucked it up s few times. ie. it wasn't so good..
Snoref
Ate here last night and all i can say is i wont be back...ever. my wife order their fish special it was bland and fish tasted stale. That night we both got food poisoning.
Tom
The food here was ok. Very standard for Petaling St, same as any other. I'd prefer papa rich when I'm chasing my Malaysian grub fix. A good option for a quick and easy eat though

"...HEY.. I'M NO EXPERT ON MALAYSIAN FOOD.. BUT.. THIS PLACE REALLY 'TICKED ALL THOSE BOXES'.. FRESH, FULL OF FLAVOUR, FAST - GREAT SERVICE, GENEROUS SERVES, GOOD VALUE.. FFS..!! WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT??..." <br/><br/>Just got back from 'feasting' at PETALING STREET, Station Street, Box Hill...<br/><br/>I'm so content, I gotta go lay down.. can't stay sitting up... - all the details when I wake... <br/>Truly... get there tonight - so cool, so comfy, so tummy scrumptious...!!! <br/><br/>Won't leave much of a dint in your pocket, either.. kinda important - this time of the year...<br/><br/>Visited on Wednesday 18th November 2015 for a late Lunch with my son.

Been here a few times now. Always loved the dry wanton noodles with hainanese chicken as it never fails to bring a smile to a BIG wanton noodles fan! The pork lard they use in the sauce is simply amazing. Chicken is tender and yummy too. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about their claypot lou shu fun and mee goreng mamak, one being too dry and the later being too wet. The mee goreng mamak felt like mee basah and there is just too much paste in it. Nevertheless, I will still return for their dry wanton noodles.
Sophie
First time to try out petaling street. A great experience, food come out nice and quick. Only found their fish dish was pretty oily and wasnt full of flavours. It was basically battered deep fried fish and then the sauce was placed on top. Other than that price was quiet reasonable. And very happy that they accept creaditcard payment as many boxhill restaurants dodge the system and make it cash only.
Michele Wang
I came here after trying out the branch in the CBD, I was happy to find one here but only to be disappointed by their tasteless Claypot Loh Shu Fan and unfriendly service. Considering I am paying this much for a meal, I was hoping for at least a more polite service. It was an bad experience which encourages me to go elsewhere. They even charge me for a take away box, which was surprising since other Asian shop that I've visited provide it for me for free.
Jeremy W
Good variety and very tasty food. My favourite dish turned out to be the petaling street crispy pork dish. The ice kacang dish was quite authentic as well. Fully recommended.
Binula
Good, fast, cheap mostly Malaysian food - do a great roti and fried rice - worth a try. Always pop in here for a quick meal before/after work
Loz Arthur
I love the roti here!! Working in the area my partner and I regularly pop in for a quick meal. I love the veggie fried rice and my partner gets the curry chicken with roti. Food also comes really quick with good staff. It's not a fancy restaurant but would definitely recommend it!
Caitlin
YUMMY :). I like Petaling Street. My boyfriend and I have come here a few times now, and never had an issue.<br/>Their Chicken Laksa is delicious....!!<br/>Our waitress last time remembered our order from the last, and she was so friendly and lovely. I loved that she remembered us, it made us both feel special :)<br/>We look forward to coming back soon!<br/>Thanks so much
Vicky_lee28
Hopeless food. I order mee goreng takeaway yesterday and it was disgusting food that i ever had in my life.It didn'd had any salt in it, no falvour, tastless never going back again.
Denny
The chicken served also lacks flavour but at least it has a marinate. In most restaurants, the cut of chicken served would be a selection of cuts but mostly the tender and moist parts of the chicken with bones being mostly a small inconvenience. Maybe I’m just a bit lazy, but it’s something I often never seem to come across when I order a Ipoh Hor Fun. The Dry Curry Noodles (Chicken), at least has great curry flavour and sauce. It’s rich, slightly creamy but still a tad spicy and goes well with the noodles. My only con is for a tiny bit more curry sauce to flavour the noodles as well. As with the other Petaling Street restaurants, they also offer fish as a menu item. Steamed and Fried varieties. Their Steamed Fish was surprisingly decent, the sauce was flavourful, but the balance wasn’t quite perfect. The garnish of these fried pieces adds a bit of crunch and is most welcome. Impressions Overall, I found Petaling Street to be slightly underwhelming. The food standard here isn’t as high or as tasty as you may find in Glen Waverley but I only hope as time passes, it gets better with age.

Petaling street Box Hill - NEVER EVER AGAIN - score=0. Our meal was absolute rubbish and expensive slop.<br/><br/>First time and last time. <br/><br/>Glen Waverley Petaling street is just okay but Petaling Street in the city is very good. <br/><br/>I would rather eat cold fish and chips. <br/><br/>The lass asked if we would like to leave a tip.....amazing. <br/><br/>ripped off again

ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME PETALING STREET?. Yes, it's another Asian/Malaysian franchise .... must be ordinary right?<br/>WRONG ... Firstly, it's modern, spacious and clean .... tell me, how many other Asian restaurants in Box Hill are like that?<br/>Superb location, easy to find.<br/>Secondly, what a pleasant service, now tell me which other restaurants in Box Hill. We love how the young ladies serves us with smiles and politeness every week without fail. Extra Fresh Cut Chilies, no worries ...<br/>Thirdly, I've/we've been there 4 weeks in a row, only disappointment was the Combination fired hor fun, the rest are tasty and EXTRA LARGE serve, so I think to be fair, this place has done a great job.<br/>Lastly, all the service are very make me happy with that. I don't know why people said the woman in PS service were terrible. <br/>Well done to the team, we will come back for more. :))
Nesshihi
Ridiculous service. I would like to complain a woman who works in box hill petaling street because her service manner makes me feel dissapointed . I ordered a ice kacang and i reminded her that i only want the ice kacang with coconut sugar. However, when the order was ready to serve , and the waitress notice the mistake made by the woman who make this order and reported back, the woman loudly speak out, "just ignore it, go ahead and serve it." i was shocked when i heard it. I have never been to a restaurant and being served with this terrible service. I had special request with the order, the woman who made this order noticed the mistake, but didnt have any apologize with the customer. I think the person who spoke out loudly "ignore the mistake", is not.qualified to be a waitress. I hope the manager of the restaurant will reconsider to recruit this staff.
Cy_yu_star0629
Terrible customer service. I had my supper with my friends at petalling street in box hill at around 11pm. I was served by a mid -aged lady with poor english, i orderd lasi lamak with pork , but i ended up served with beef. Also, when i served the dish, i received it impolitely, i was asking for a glass of water , but she ignored me. I feel very dissapointed with the service, i will definitely not coming back to dine here at this restaurant.
Stchung99
Staff morale & customer service. I've been to Petaling Street at Box Hill three times since its reopening and will not patronise it again. The service there is abolutely appaling - no one cares to take order and the food I ordered is not available. Staff are loitering up and down with little to do. <br/>At this rate, you are going to end up with another 're-opening' soon especially with the competition around...Papa Rich, Kopitiam, Straits Of Malacca many others you should know well. There is nothing special about your menu or slack service that gives customers to come back.
Steve19800
The meat likes used meat from stock. The bowl is peeling at the edge , be careful not to eat those peeled stuff as you don't know what is the content.

Dinner at Petaling Street Restaurant Box Hill.. We usually go out for a meal on the weekend. So we decided to dine at China Bar. Just before we crossed the street we saw this Malaysian restaurant called Petaling Street, so we stopped to look at the menu on the window. They had some tantalizing food on the menu and that was enough to change our mind to cross the street. We orderd nasilemak with chicken curry, nasi lemak with beef curry, roasted chicken with rice and char kway tiaw. Nasi lemak came with crispy peanuts and anchovy fish plus sambal. My daughter ate up all the char kway tiaw although she put aside the fishcake slices and cockles. Rosted chicken and rice was delicious , I found the soup that came with it was too salty. After meal we ordered ice kachang and a glass of drink with red bean Iin it. Overall the food was delicious, service needs improvements. We shall return to try other dishes on the menu.

Bloody good food. Beef rendang was particularly good. Chicken Roti Chanai was also superb as was the crispy whole fish with the Thai sauce
Natalieho123
Finally come back after close nearly two years, nice food and good service.<br/>Welcome back, petaling street
Nean
It's back. And judging from the half full restaurant at only 12.30 (and full before we received our meals) I'd say it's been missed by a lot of locals. The Har Mee was both fragrant and flavourful. You could smell and taste the prawn heads/shells used in the broth. The whole fish with Nyonya sauce was also tasty, and was crispy enough that the fins were edible like chips.<br/><br/>Staff were keen to impress with it being newly opened, so service was polite and efficient (for uni students, anyway, which I am guessing they were).<br/><br/>Welcome back Petaling Street
Robyn
Very average. Food is okay. Nothing special. Cheap way to fill up but don't get excited. Service also extremely average.

Cheap n Tasty. Food: Most items on the menu are sensational<br/>Value: Outstanding<br/>Service: Super fast<br/>Staff: Who cares at these prices<br/>Atmosphere: I go there to eat

Waited ages for a dish where the only skill applicable was microwaving. Anddd they failed on that front .. Meat was cold in the middle. Presentation was zero... Seriously disgusting.

When its bad, its really bad. When its good, its not bad.. A host of purportedly Malaysian eateries have sprung up over the recent year or so, many of them franchises.<br/><br/>Petaling Street is one such place. <br/>When a franchise first opened on Swanston Street, I took the initiative to drop by for dinner together with a family member.<br/><br/>One thing which set Petaling St apart were the fish dishes - a variety of dishes using whole fish, steamed or fried in different sauces, together with rice. Whole fish is popular with Asians because it implies freshness - you can't use bad cuts of unidentifiable meat and pass it off for something else.<br/>Unfortunately Aussies do not like whole fish much because of the bones and therein lies the conundrum.<br/><br/>I'm not sure how well that turned out with the public, but seeing as to how they dropped the emphasis of fish to a host of other familiar South-East Asian dishes, I'm guessing not so stellar.<br/><br/>We ordered a fish cooked in sambal sauce and it turned out pretty unspectacular. It tasted alot like the fish had been cooked separately from the sauce and finally just assembled together with the sauce ladled over the fish. Not good. Also not good was the Bak Kut Teh (Pork ribs cooked in tea soup) - watery and lacking in taste. It was our first and last visit, we thought.<br/><br/>Fast forward many months later and a friend decided to take me to - surprise surprise - Petaling St for dinner. I thought it would be a good opportunity to try them again and see if anything has changed in this franchise with some potential.<br/><br/>The interior has lots of red wood and gold, very stereotypical of Asian restaurants. The area the restaurant sits on is massive, and as you walk in to be seated you are flanked by two large cooking stations - why there are two cooking stations are beyond me, but if I would hazard a guess one is for cooking and the other is mainly a prep area.<br/><br/>Almost dizzy from hunger, I decided on a whim to order Hainanese Chicken rice, while my friend ordered a Curry Laksa. We also ordered Iced Teh Tarik for ourselves.<br/><br/>The Petaling Street menu is quite odd in the sense that it feels random. While on one hand it seems to want to conform to Malaysian food it suddenly veers off and offers alien dishes such as "Combination seafood on rice". I have a particular dislike for eateries which are for example, labelled as "Singaporean" and offers "Thai green curry" on their menu. It seems to me an insincere attempt to even try to stay true to their roots.<br/><br/>The iced teh tarik wasn't as milky as I expected, but a little thinned down.<br/>However, when served the Hainanese chicken rice I was pleasantly surprised to see the grated ginger and garlic chilli served on the side to dip the chicken in.<br/><br/>First off, the rice was not the aromatic rice cooked in chicken stock as expected. It was coloured yellow slightly - I'm not sure why - but other than that it was rather flat tasting.<br/>The chicken was tender and meaty - many people don't know this but the chicken in a chicken rice has to be slightly below room temperature or room temperature, taste plump and flavoursome, yet not be overly meaty.<br/>But it wasn't too bad, in fact, it beats hands down anything from a food court, and to a lesser degree a good many mediocre Malaysian restaurants peppered throughout Melbourne.<br/><br/>Under the chicken were cucumber slices, a nod to the traditionally served chicken rice in Malaysia and Singapore that is served with sliced cucumber, and a little bit of gravy.<br/><br/>The best part was the soup. Chicken rice is ALWAYS served with soup and for some its a fine art in its own, bursting with umami flavour which some chicken rice lovers would use to spoon over the rice to moisten it, mixed with a bit of chilli.<br/><br/>My friend thinks I'm silly to rave about the chicken rice soup instead of the chicken rice, but I personally think its the details which matter. <br/><br/>My friend thought her curry laksa wasn't too bad - it was not too thick, like those gourmet laksas you get when you order from some chi-chi Malaysian restaurants, but yet retained a slight creaminess and a spike of chilli when you slurp through (yes, I picked on her food too!).<br/><br/>Ultimately, in my humble opinion, when one takes into account the difficulties in producing consistent tasting dishes in a multi-outlet franchise, complete with different chefs with different cooking skills and techniques, we should expect a sacrifice of taste and quality to a reasonable degree for the convenience of being able to drop by multiple outlets in popular suburbs and in the CBD.<br/><br/>Despite all this, Petaling St does have a few decent dishes that aren't too shabby despite having a host of other possibly less-than-average dishes - examples being their Bak kut teh and their fish dishes.

We ordered the combination hor fun and fried kuay teow. Our food was serve 5 min apart. Food was served in plates that were chipped. Food was bland and serving was small with little ingredients. Won't be back for sure!

Very Average. We went here for a family dinner in mid February 2012, we went on a mid week night looking forward to a feast. When we began to order I asked for a serve of roasted pork belly and was informed that they didn't sell this item. So we changed our order to some Char Siu pork and some Peking Duck. The waiter then told me that they didn't sell these items either! (Maybe time to update the menu me thinks.....) <br/>So we had to then order some other entrees and mains that they did actually sell. The food was average and was lacking flavour. Will not be returning to this place, I would rather go across the road to China Bar. I give this place a 3/10.

Had dinner here tonight. Was very bad, beef curry was awful. We asked the waiter for a recommendation and was brought a dish that looked like spew on a plate and did not taste that great. Couldn't eat any of the dishes. Plenty of other places to go in Box Hill.

My friend and I went in... The food tasted disgusting! We couldn't eat it! Got up and left... They didn't even ask what was wrong. It stank and smelt like ass! Do yourselves a favor and DO NOT BOTHER.

Worst squid ever!. Having just returned from Malaysia and missing the food, we thought we'd give Petaling Street a try. The experience was very unenjoyable. The hawker style squid was the worst squid I have ever eaten- so chewy that I literally could not bite through it. Such a shame because the flavours were great. Nothing like the soft squid we had eaten over there. The roti chanai was nice but nothing special. We won't be going back!

This "restaurant" was offensively bad. They served mee goreng that was pretty much Heinz spaghetti in tomato sauce. Atrocious food and weird smells, DO NOT GO THERE.

This is one of my went in once and never again. The har mee was covered in oil on the top layer before u can get into the soup....

PS need to lift their game!. Working in the area, my colleagues and I have tried pretty much every place along Station St. I have given PS Box Hill several chances, but the final nail in the coffin came just before Christmas when the noodle dish I'd ordered and altered to become a vegetarian dish arrived with meat in it. <br/><br/>After eventually flagging down a waitress and explaining the situation, she didn't even let me finish speaking before snatching the plate back and stalking to the kitchen. My food was back in less than 2 minutes - obviously they'd just picked out the meat and handed it back. It was lukewarm, oily and I still ended up finding bits of meat throughout. The service and the food quality here keeps on slipping. There are plenty of other places to eat in Box Hill.

Cheap Malaysian. Service was non-existent and they don't serve alcohol... but when you're paying $10 a main, who really cares? Food was delicious, especially the huge curry laksa, which could have been served in a bucket! Certainly not the most atmospheric of places, but great for a budget friendly, no frills feed.

Smelly and slow service. The restaurant has a funny smell in the dining area. I sat near the sink area where it stank.<br/><br/>Also, the food wasn't that great. I had the Loh Mee and Prawn Noodle soup. Turns out to be different and full of sugar in the soup base. Terrible! <br/><br/>The only thing good was the Malaysian Roast Chicken Rice which i can probably get in Glen or Swanston St.

This is the worst restaurant ever. Service is absolutely crap, waitresses are very rude. Food is crap too, noodles is undercooked, meats are chunky and tasteless. I won't recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Cheap and quick food...Love it. To all those people who have given bad reviews, I don't agree at all.<br/>Me and my wife felt a bit lazy to cook and were on the lookout for some cheap food in box hill, as it's clsoe to where we have recently moved. HAving not known or heard about this restaurant, we happened to just walk in.<br/><br/>We both ordered Claypot Rice dishes. Mine was chicken and fish which was very ordinary. My wife's was Pork and that was great tasting.<br/><br/>Overall I would give it 8-9/10 for taste and value for money and will surely be going tehre again.<br/><br/>We paid $18.50 all together and there is no way we can get cheaper food than this in whole of melbourne.<br/><br/>Guys this is not fine dining :). Stop whinging. You get what you pay for. <br/><br/>The menu has lots of dishes to try, so surely I will be heading again.

Meh. Very average for what it is. Have been a few times and have always thought it was okay. The last time i had a Wanton Noodle soup which had ZERO flavour! The sambal was not what i call sambal...where was the spice?Probably would steer clear of this place next time and head back to old faithful Chinabar!

Dissapointing. I arrived in Box Hill later in the evening one night, craving Hainanese Chicken. Usually any Asian restaurant near Box Hill CBD is of a high standard. Many are truly excellent. Not so Petaling Street.<br/><br/>Hainanese Chicken is a pedestrian dish, usually simple but large and full of flavour. The dish that arrived on my table was about $13.00, which is reasonably expensive for this dish. It was the smallest Hainan Chicken serve I have ever seen. Probably about half the usual serve of chicken. The accompanying soup was not quite lukewarm, and the rice was bland. <br/><br/>I have not tried any other dishes here, but I don't think I will be going back when there are so many excellent restaurants to choose from in Box Hill.

Yummy Malaysian. The service here is crap. Lets face it though, most places in Box Hill are a little under par with there service. <br/>The food here on the other hand is delicious and very reasonably priced. I love the wonton noodle soup and the malaysian roast chicken. <br/>Don't expect that your food will come out at the right time or even that the waitress can speak english.<br/>However more importantly you can expect for there to be great food!

The WORST asian restaurant I've ever been to!!! Food stank, meat was rock hard and not even cooked properly. And to top things off the waiters are unbelievably rude! Even for Asian FOB standards and that's putting it politely! There's one guy with dyed hair that walks around burping loudly in your face. I mean wtf??!! who does that? seriosly! While other waiters just spin around the joint aimlessly having loud chit chats with each other right next to where you're sitting. I will NEVER go back there.

Highly not recommended. After the hype of this Malaysian place opening up in Box Hill- I couldn't wait to try its famous Nasi Lemak and Laksa. <br/>All I can say is that I've been back twice so far- both times a let down. Food was luke warm, and everything looked like it had been pre-heated in the microwave. Can second guess the place isn't owned, nor is the food cooked by Malaysians or have they been trained to cook the specialized cuisine. I'm not surprised at how empty the place looks each time I pass by.
Kelviny_98
BAD food. I ordered "hakka pork belly with dry noodles"<br/><br/>This is so bad!...... the pork was like a rock and have signs thats its been recooked a millions times in MICROWAVE! yes microwave!<br/><br/>Worst place for malaysian food. Poor effort. They are trying to do too many things and therefore instead of being good with a few dish, they suck with many dishes. Seriously don't call your place Petaling Street (WHERE GOOD FOOD COMES FROM)<br/><br/>stay away from this place<br/><br/>MALAYSIAN

Not in a hurry to go back. I had early dinner at the restaurant yesterday and did not really enjoyed it much. Tried to order soup, but no 2,4,6, and 8 were not available on that day. Got no 10 instead and was disappointed.<br/>We also ordered the traditional Malaysian Chicken and Salted Fish Claypot Rice, thinking that it must be something traditional and tasty. Was truly disappointed! What was supposed to be chicken was just bones with hardly any meat, awful bits of salted fish, super thin slices of chinese sausage and soya sauce poured on the rice.<br/>The only okay dish was the fish special for $14 as it was cheap. But i dont think the fish was fresh and has got a little 'earthy/muddy' taste if you know what i mean. dont even mentioned the accompanying rice - it's yesterday's.

Petaling Street. I went for dinner two nights ago with three friends. It started off well. A staff member came and poured us tea (which was delicious) and took our orders. This is where it started to go downhill. We were told that we would not be able to open our bottle of wine. That's fine. We hadn't checked to see if it was BYO. So we ordered beer off the menu but were told we could not have beer. OK. We all decided we could put our alcoholic tendencies away for one night, so we plowed on. We ordered our entrees and mains. Our entrees arrived but the wait staff did not bring any bowls....we had to ask for them. We also had to help ourselves to serviettes from the drawer as they weren't provided either. The entrees (spring rolls and satay chicken sticks) were only adequate, but we had barely started eating them before our mains arrived. By the time we were ready to start eating our mains they had started to go cold. We did not finish any of the main meals. The pork was fatty and unappetising, the combination meats with crispy fried noodles were bland (as was the sauce served on it), and throughout the night the service from the wait staff continued to deteriorate. I would definately not return to this restaurant.

Ipoh Fried Hor Fun Soup. We ordered the Ipoh Fried Noodle, but the gravy was so watery that it was more like a soup! Suffice to say, it wasn't a great tasting dish. On the other hand, the roast chicken rice was better, if somewhat salty, but the experience was kind of ruined by the fact that they had forgotten my order.<br/><br/>Somehow though, the venue is rather popular as there aren't many Malaysian options immediately nearby. Take my advice though... It's worth driving 5 minutes to go elsewhere.

When this restaurant first opened it was great, food was fresh & full of flavour that i didn't mind lining up for a table. Since then everything has gone downhill. Went last week and the food came out in 3 minutes! Parts of it was cold, the fish was dry - it was CRAP. I guess the owners are cutting costs & that's why there's no lining up anymore & why there are heaps of tables available on a Saturday night. Never going there again!

Quick and delish. Great value arvo tea meal for $6.80. I come here often. Their serves are bigger than the ones that glen waverley petaling and also the flavours are much better. The service is casual, not much other than the plonk of the dish on your table. But for casual dining, I love the taste and value. The chau kuey teow is one of the best I've had, though it had some kind of clam meat which was very fishy :/ Though I crave their roast malaysian chicken with rice the most with the hot milk tea. Ahhhhhh, very satisfying autumn meal!

May Petaling flutter away. The hawthorne Petaling is actually nice to eat at, you'd think a mega restaurant of the same name can succeed. Not with its incoherent service, late meals and scrawny portions it won't. You don't get smaller with meals the size of cup saucers like you get here. Plenty of the same but better just across the street

Only Love the Fried Fish. I like the hawker style idea and interesting use of the majong tables where you can open up the drawers to find the serviettes hidden there. <br/><br/>I was very dissappointed with my order which was the noodles with pork belly because the presentation was terrible and un-appetizing. It's like feeding a dog. Therefore, I didn't enjoy the food. <br/><br/>But my friend ordered the Fried Fish with Thai Sauce and it looked and tasted delicious. It is a whole fish and comes with a bowl of rice- exactly like the picture on the wall. The Fried Fish dishes were the most popular dishes there.<br/><br/>I will go back to this place next time but only to order the Fried Fish. <br/><br/>Also, if you ask for a take away container for the Fried Fish dishes they charge extra $1. But if you ask for take away containers for other dishes, there is no charge. Go figure...

Easily the poorest representation of Malaysian food I've had so far in Melbourne. It was obvious to me from the presentation and inconsistent temperature that the components of the combination hor fun had been precooked individually then subsequently assembled, and a copious amount of egg gravy slapped on top to disguise the fact. There was no disguising how bland the dish was and that MSG had been added. The nasi lemak was equally disappointing. We hate wasting food, but just couldn't bring ourselves to finish our meals on this occasion. Service was prompt and the iced teh was well done. However, there was no saving the entire experience when the star of the show, the food, failed so miserably.
