Review Korean Bbq Restaurant - Box Hill

Staff were super friendly and delightful. Meat was so juicy and delicious and amazing portions. Great selection of Soju also and definitely don’t skip the vege dumplings.

Amazing restaurant. Have tried buffet menu. It was delicious. And the staff is very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed a lot! Will visit again for sure.

Kind of nice. Nothing too special. Vegetables didn't look to fresh. Meats taste ok, and sauce depending on if you like the sauce they offered, which again, thought it was so so.

Twice a week! Kind waitress and great food. really high cost performance. Although the food quality is as perfect as Bornga, it still totally win at the price. It becomes one of my favorite Korean restaurant in MEL!

I went there with friend last Saturday, they charge $35/pp for the bbq buffet, also all their waitress (very beautiful😍) and customers are Chinese not Korean, but I find that the food is even better than those real Korean restaurant, and the service is the best!

Good food good service You must try the seafood tofu soup in the Gourmet buffet Excellent!

The worst experience, the egg in the cold noodle was spoiled. I told the waitress, she took it back to the kitchen for a long, long time, then came back said the chef had said it‘s all good, they were lying. I spent $37.5 one person, paid by credit card, needed surcharge, asked a tax invoice, needed add $2 extra. the worst and most brutal restaurant I have ever seen.

The atmosphere was definitely strange, round bbq hotplates with stools makes for a sore back after a 90 minute dinner outing. Food was of acceptable quality, however the hosts were constantly peering and leaning over tending to the food, making the experience somewhat uncomfortable. At lot of the time at BBQ, I would want to be able to cook my own food and have fun with friends whilst doing it. Recommendations: - Invest in booths or big tables / seating - Ask if customers would like to have a self-cooking experience - Clean up the formatting of the menu - Some painting or interior design for the restaurant would go a long way

Look, I really wanted to give this place a chance. Maybe it’s not as bad as the reviews say.. My experience dining here wasn’t the worst but it wasn’t the best either.

We came in a large group, ordered the Gourmet Buffet. The entree is only available on request, it’s written on a board which is hung up on a small part of the wall and covered by the front door. Not very visible to the customers. We didn’t see the sign until after we finished our meals so we didn’t have our entree. In my opinion, wouldn’t it make more sense to have that information on the menu?

The meat was served and the portion was very reasonable, we didn’t need to order much more meat. However, the quality of the meat was average to low. There was a chunk of the meat that was still frozen. The marinaded meat was quite tasty though. When it comes to mains, two people received the wrong order. I ordered the seafood soup, which the waiter served me. When I started eating it, I noticed it was actually the Kim chi soup. Since the waiters looked busy, I didn’t mind having it anyway. My friend received the wrong soup twice, on the second time she said don’t worry about it, assuming that she’d get a discount for not receiving her mains.

For dessert, we all ordered ice cream. The vanilla ice cream was fine but the rest of the ice cream we ordered came out melted. To top it off the waiter gave us forks instead of spoons to eat our melted ice creams. So that was.. interesting.

When we went to pay, the waiter had to call up the manager in regards to giving my friend’s meal a discount, to which they denied. You’d think that after the mistakes they made, that’s the least they could do to fix the situation, but I guess not.

It seemed like the waiters did their best in serving us and there was only two of them serving the whole restaurant. However, to give a good dining experience, it’s in the little things. It’s okay to make mistakes but you need to think of better ways to make up for them and keep your customers happy.

I left the restaurant feeling quite disappointed. If you’re thinking of coming here, there are much better places to go to in this area. Yes, this place is the cheapest but you will get what you pay for... and even less.

Staff were not polite nor friendly. They had no green tea ice cream AND limited it to one ice cream per person, this rule is not written anywhere on the menu. Meat quality was very average. Not a place I would recommend.

I came to this restaurant for about 5 times. Previous services and food was good,BUT it is disappointing for today's services!!!! We always had 35.50 buffet and we can keep ordering ice cream before. However, the waitress said that we only can order only one ice cream for each person today!!!The waitresses are very unfriendly!!!They even explained that the Previous waiters didn't know the rules. we can't accept this reason. WILL NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT AGAIN!!

The price was ok. Various choices of meat. Marinated meat was really good. Just one thing I dislike is the smoke system didn’t seem to work really well. When most of the tables grilled their meat, the whole shop was covered by gray smoke, not good for health.

Today I came back again, the service was surprisingly better than any other times. Keep that attitude, guys ❤️

As Box Hill becomes its own China Town, a few different cuisine restaurants remain or are making their own mark. Korean BBQ (literal name) located on Bank St and not far from Box Hill’s central shopping mall crowd is its own legacy. It is a casual and no frills kind of place. You won’t wine and dine but you can have a few cheeky Korean drinks like sojus.

The menu has options of ordering meats, mains and side dishes individually to various options of all you can eat Korean BBQ. It is a popular place among the young crowd and who don’t mind the mediocre quality.

I had the Gourmet Buffet setting bank accounts by $35.50 per person. Per person you have a choice of either soup, bibimbap or cold noodles. While the meat options included beef (brisket, ox tongue, ribs, diced beef), pork (pork belly, spicy pork, pork neck), chicken (non-spicy and spicy) and octopus. The side dishes included kimchi, sprouts, fishcakes and a small plate of vegetables to pair with your meat.

The meats are not your highest quality but a value for money. While the kimchi jigae was spicy, filled with minimal amounts of meat and strongly fermented kimchi.

The waiter serves you all the meats available at the start and then you are required to continuously order. The kitchen portion controls their servings and it can become extremely busy. Therefore, I recommend double ordering your meats upon request.

If you’re looking for a Korean BBQ where it is value for money, don’t mind the quality, more about the quantity and no frills– this is your place.

Very classic Korean BBQ. Always lots of customers that I need to wait, but still worthy. The meat is delish and strongly recommend the kimchi pancake.

I order a stone hot pot rice. And I want a small soup with rice, but the only choice is beverages. So I ordered a soup coat around $15. $30 for a lunch break, not happy.

Very decent for the price you pay. Had the set menu and it filled me and girlfriend up without a problem. Place is very cosy and nice. Staff was also very friendly. Note that this place is cash only however there are plenty of ATM's across the road.

Good food, good service, love this place.
Been there last night, La Kalbi was delicious and the soon dobu soup was a top notch.
Prices are a bit high but the quality of the food is excellent. I will go again as soon as possible.
Lucia Wei
We didn't have any food here because it's cash only. Also their waiters are not friendly. BTW you can't take any outside food and drinks here.
Tania
Service was great, staff were super friendly and helpful.
The food on the other hand was quite average, a bit different to the last few time we had been.
Quality not as good as before.
Margaret
Very disappointing! First time I dined at Box Hill Korean BBQ was extremely pleasant. The service was quick & friendly, and the food was fantastic. The meat was served fresh before barbecuing & the bibimbap was splendid.

However, under new management, I noticed a dip in service. On three separate occasions I've had to request dishes from the buffet menu because they were not served, bibimbap are served to a table of four in delayed sequences therefore delaying meal time for the entire table, staff are much too hands on with the tongs/scissors (I spent a long time trying to remove grease from my clothes) and the pricing is definitely not worthy of the food you receive i.e. meat is served frozen (at times). It's a shame too because this humble Korean BBQ restaurant was a favourite of mine...not anymore!

Good price for buffet❤️
Good service ❤️
Good food ❤️ love the side dishes! The meats are amazing👊🏻 love the bimbimbap as well!
And definitely coming back😍 going to try the soup!

The littlest one suggested the place for dinner and being a wet and cold evening, BBQ seems like a good idea. However, I was a little unsettled when there were mixed review about the place, in particular their service level.

My trepidation was unfounded. Our experience proved contrary. We enjoyed our dinner there. The staff were friendly throughout and service were prompt.

Ordered the beef set, chap chae and pork belly. Before long, we got into the thick of things. Beef were nicely marinated. I thought they could have been a little more generous with vegetables. We got just a handful of button mushroom, sweet potatoes and some onion. We felt like we were at a ration camp. Similarly, the description for the set dish indicated that it suits 2-3 people. Hence, why just one bowl of soup?

Chap chae was outstanding. Again, we would like a slightly bigger portion for the price we pay. As mentioned, the beef were all well marinated and I thought the pork belly was good value too.

Was glad that we kinda got on to the right side of things. Overall an enjoyable meal with the family.

I used to like coming here. It used to be a great offer of all you can eat combined with service with a smile.
However recently when I went I was so put off by not only the staff but the lack of food I'll never return here again (or the Sister location in Carnegie for that matter.

We were accepted to come in at 9pm. Now it is all you can eat. If the staff was not happy with us eating till closing time 1.why not warn us before we come in 2. Why offer us more dishes when we can not be expected to finish our food without raw pork / chicken poisoning 3. Can they not politely ask us to leave instead of death glaring us?

They also ran allegedly Kimchi after only serving us one for side dish.

Go elsewhere for your kBBQ
Generally a nice meal. I'm certainly not into eating challenges or anything but definitely found the waiters to be avoiding serving food and their service was slow. I suppose some people eat a lot but that is the risk when offering all you can eat. The flavours were ok and overall an entertaining evening. I won't be rushing back but would be open to returning. Despite the reviews the restaurant seemed hygienic compared to some places and maybe they have stepped up their game.

Been to this place a few times and it's always been pleasant. Yes it's not as fancy as those BBQ places in the city but if you know your Korean BBQ food this place is nice. Their meat is fresh and well marinated and when needed upon request they change the grill plate. They give plenty of side dishes, and much bigger in portion compared to other restaurants. The service is quick and honestly if you want to go somewhere cheap this is the place. We usually get kimchi soup on the side and in terms of flavour it's authentic and consistent amongst the few times we have visited this place. This restaurant is definitely a place you should check out if you want a cheap eat.
Belinda
Giving 5.0 rating based mainly on the value. Have been here a good handful of times and always left with the meat sweats (a good thing). I love the condiments, and along with the set buffet meats you also get to choose a main to go with which i always go for the kimchi soup. Service has always been pleasant.

The food here is solid for the price. Have to disagree with some of the negative reviews!
Came for dinner and had a $49 beef bbq set for two which filled us up and the meat was all really tasty. Service was basic but attentive if that makes sense, not a lot of personality but they were attentive and at times filled our side dishes and sauce before we even asked! Recommended.

Was here with another 2 friends for dinner. The food was alright, i would say average. But the staffs' attitude were terrible, and i have read other reviews as well where i am not the only one with such horrifying experience. Raised my hand for more than 10 mins, no one even come over until i left my seat to request them another can of drink. Even so, was so reluctant to offer me the drink. Every time when they put down a dish you can tell from their expression which they are really reluctant to serve you. Never coming back for this restaurant.

p.s. The first time in life to write a review, really can't stand their attitude

Found the source of my mysterious stomach bug. Cockroaches in the restaurant. Absolutely shocking hygiene. Completely ruined our dinner experience. Never coming back! :(
Mary Lu
Great! I've been here numerous times and I've never been disappointed. We always order the all you can eat buffet and meat is tasty (mix it in with bibimbap). Staff are tentative and quick. This is why I always come back! Highly recommend Korean BBQ cooked over flames.

Really quite cheap for good delicious food.

The downside - got very very very sick and was out of action for a few days. It was very delicious but was it all worth it?
Hilda Lee
Had the $29.90 buffet, which came with beef, chicken, pork, octopus, bibimbap, side dishes and fruit/ice cream for dessert. Meat was nice, but we found most of them too sweet. The spicy meat was not even spicy. Service was great - the waiters and waitresses were friendly and attentive, they changed our cooking plate and replaced our side dishes frequently. Overall it was a more pleasant experience compared to Seoulia, but I think Seoulia had better tasting meat.

Before going to this place like many others I read the reviews .. They were not very positive
But I still decided to go and try the 32.50 all you can eat
It was delicious , there was nothing wrong with this
First they made us pick from a soup than they gave us a bit of all the meats
Bulgogi , chicken etc
Than after that you can keep asking for more meat
It was awesome
Good value
Il be back :)
This is a simple, no fuss Korean BBQ restaurant. Nothing is particularly great here however nothing is particularly bad here. Will still come back looking for my Korean BBQ fix
Nick NotsoFun
Terrible service. We ordered the deluxe buffet but were served the regular one despite confirming half way through our meal with staff that they were serving regular one. When we went to pay the bill manager was unaccommodating and blamed us for not asking her directly about our order, for not asking for our food (including the entree to be provided with the deluxe) and was not willing to charge us for the food we received. After some debate she decided we were criminals and called the police at which point we decided to pay the excess. To judge the food, all i can say is the highlight of the meal was the amusing ending to ourexperience.

...my fascination for anything Korean has grown - Kpop, Korean Pretty boys, and of course Korean cuisine! YUM! To be honest I feel that Korean BBQ isn't as good as Yami Yami Korean BBQ (next door). The portions were a lot smaller. It's kinda ironic in a sense that the service at Korean BBQ is a lot better than Yami Yami, where the service was horrible but the food was better. Soju To be honest, I'm not a big fan of soju. It's high in alcohol content, and it taste almost like water. However, I must practice my soju

We were left disappointed with the meals we had after having really great food at Dae Jang Geum. The service here is also bare minimum, and took at least 15 minutes to receive our food that was a bit cold. Hmm. The complementary sides with the two rice dishes are also very small and unlike the Dae Jang Geum which is generous. Maybe the dinner or BBQ is better? I don’t know, but I’m not enthused to try it again.

Korean barbeques are one of the most flavourful types of barbeques and an all-time favourite for hanging out with friends. However, to me, the mark of a truely good Korean barbeque is how good the establishment's pre-meal pickles are. They have to be drop

(My 'main' - which was rice, fried egg, various other side dishes and beef) We ended up in Box Hill one night since I felt like lots of meat. I'm really not a big meat eater generally and I tend to stay away from all-you-can-eat because I have this bad ha

Good value for money!. Came here a few times and the food is great everytime! Nice range of Korean cuisine, and the BBQ sets are satisfying. As mentioned "good value for money", the BBQ sets provide a lot, with a range of meats and sides. One of my favourite Korean BBQ restaurants;) Although the space is small, it creates a "homey" feel, especially on winter nights nothing better than having an indoor bbq! Service could be improved though, and I strongly suggest booking if you want to dine here.

NOT COMING BACK AGAIN. 30 minutes of waiting in your 90 minute time limit for the buffet. The waitress takes your order in an impatient manner, or sometimes they ignore your call. food is average but service is poor, will not come back.
"JT" Jeffrie Trika
It's OK. Not a bad Bento for around $15 including hot tea.
The place is a little smelly, greasy and dirty as it is small and lots of grilling on the table.

Not a pleasant dining experience.
Jack3387646
Service extremely terrible! All you can wait ! Staff no manners. Compare to other restaurant, this is the worst ever Korea BBQ restaurant I ever been attended! One of the waitresses could speak Cantonese always place the dish on the table like earthquake! There is no customer service or manners at all ! Additional serve could let you wait for ages ! And 90 minutes limited sounds like a joke since you can wait for more than 30 minutes per serve ! My impression is that one Cantonese spoken waitress feels so impatient when you ask for another serve ! The customer service calling button on the table is even a joke, because they could walk pass by you and try to ignore you no matter what we say, wave our hands! Their responses to customer are as follow - yes everyone can wait for that long is common , they may not give you exact dishes you ordered, another worst moment is Cantonese spoken waitress even mumber or swear words in front of customer when customer tries to give suggestion ,which I learnt that customer in their restaurant is no respect and right to have a say!

Won't be back. Worst Korean food ever. Service is terrible!!!!!

I went there around May. Food was terrible and the service was worst. I order beef soup, not sure the name. We got only clear soup and 2 slice of small beef. It costed $15. I was shocked and asked the waitress "is it the right one?", it doesn't look worth for $15. She said we keep boiling the soup and it is the way our restaurant serve. I was so angry. Never go there again.
Ant
Dirty restaurant, waiter that doesn't know serving sizes of his own menu, and cash only payments. Food is average.
Paulina Skorupski
Average quality meat. Spicy chicken was sweet. Smallish servings. Restaurant pretty dated. Cash only. There are Better korean bbq restaurants out there. Won't be back.
Melody
Bad service,stupid time limit
Charlie Chen
Don't like it! It's too expensive comparing what they searve, and there is a annoying 90 mins time limit, one of my friend arrived late, they refused to searve dessert becasce they timed us and told us time was out!

We were quite excited about trying Korean BBQ for the first time. While the food was average, the service was very poor. We weren't quite sure what to order and how it all worked. When we asked questions, we received blank stares. We felt incredibly rushed as staff brought all of the food out at once and offered no explanation as to what everything was.
When we had finished our meal, we were informed that we would have to pay our bill in cash only...neither of the staff members bothered to help us to locate an ATM. Disappointing, to say the least!
Amanda Green
I couldn't believe how small their potion was for "Dok-bo-ki" dish. It was around $8 to $8.50. I can't remember the exact price but there was only 8 prices of thumb sized rice cakes. That means it's $1/rice cake. I've been to many other korean restaurants in Melbourne. This Korean BBQ seem to have their own strict rule for their potions.
Mark Stella
Went there with a group of people for a birthday and the service was great, so was the food. They catered for our friend who is gluten intolerate and went the extra step to make sure she was catered for. The food and experience was A1 and would definitely go back again highly recommend.
Nean
Don't bother. We opted for the non-BBQ menu. Kim chi chijae was non spicy. Since when has Kim chi not been spicy? It tasted like canned tomato soup with pieces of wom bok. It had the sweet savoury taste of canned tomato soup. The bi bim bap was average. For the price, it was even more disappointing. Was about to go next door, but remembered hearing bad review about service,so opted for here. At least I remember the food next door was good.
Charlie Kang
Food was terrible. the meat was chewy. poor service and expensive given quality of ingredients. wouldn't be back ever......
Dave
BBQ pork- find it here. My favourite local

Not Recommended!!. Staff weren't being very helpful, asked if we could sit in for dinner (DID NOT GIVE US THE TABLE just because ppeople came in later had more than 5 people). "I'm sorry this table is reserved to serve more than 3 customers!" I was angry, will not tell families/ friends to come!
Greg Knight
I had never had Korean BBQ before so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was surprisingly good. I'd eat there again but I wish the portions were bigger. A little pricey to.

Eating it up ^^. Had all you can eat for the 2 time this week. the waiters was fantastic and we enjoyed the meal

Problems with bookings/service. We went to this restaurant after booking a large group, ive been here before and my first experience was generally good. The food was great, we had a lot to eat and ordered quite a lot.

However when we had a groupon deal, we had a group of 12 and the first time we came to the restaurant, they made a mistake with the booking. So we rescheduled to another day (after eating at some other cheap place in box hill not worthy of a birthday celebration) to find that there still wasnt enough seating for us. We cramped onto two tables that normally seat 4-6, but the food was generally good.

My parents then ordered tea toward the end. They came out with 2 teapots and 6-8 teacups. The people who did drink the tea never got any refills, and so each of the 6 or so people only got 1 cup of tea. The waiters then charged the entire table of 12 for tea @ $2 each.

$24 for 2 pots of tea (6 cups of tea) is a flying ripoff. The fact that they even had the guts to charge 12 people for tea when they didnt even give us enough cups to drink is a joke. I tried to placate my parents who were charged the meal that night, and wrote an email to the restaurant who did not reply.

although the food was good, im no longer supporting this business on the grounds of how they treat customers.
Asianfoodlover
Extremely disappointed!!. The food is limited. for $33.5 buffet, except for the meat, we can choose only One desert, one dish. im so pissed off how they can call it buffet this way when i tried to order another green tea ice cream. the meat comes out slow, sometimes they forgot and we have to order it again many times. they let us have 1h30 mins to eat, including Waiting ages for them to bring the food out if they remember, cook, and eat, and order desert and finish it. Be prepared to go straight home for a bath afterward as your clothes and your hair will be full of bbq flavour. the restaurant is so small so the smoke cant be sucked all up i guess. NEVER go there for a buffet , iy is expensive but the food is mediocre. the sauce iz what you can get from Korean shop near the place.
Cherise
Casual but funky environment. Loved the experience.

Fail: The Korean BBQ Experience. I am not pleased with Korean BBQ and will not be dining there.

As a native Californian who loves Korean BBQ, I was excited to find this restaurant considering there are so few here in Melbourne where I now live. I drove 20 minutes specifically to have the all you can eat buffet for $27.

When I got there, they said I couldn't order it.

Why?

It was mandatory to have two people.

What I found fascinating is the fact that, had they allowed me to dine, they would have profited more from the sale considering they would have had only one person to feed, for the same price it would have cost for two people - which I was more than happy to pay.

I asked what would have to happen to have it anyway and they said it was there policy to only serve the buffet to two people.

This is quite unfortunate.

Considering I'm a huge Korean BBQ lover, I likely would have dined at their location at least once a week... maybe even bring friends next time.

If I were to come once per week they would have had $1404 in revenue per year from me alone.

It appears as though this restaurant does not understand the life time value of one customer and is not willing to 'go the extra mile' to give an outstanding experience.

Could they have outstanding food? Absolutely. Could you have an outstanding experience if you're with more than one person? Very possible. Could you have an outstanding person if you're flying solo - very possible if you're not looking for the buffet.

For my own personal experience however, I was not pleased, will not go there to dine again and will seek out a better Korean BBQ restaurant whom will go the extra mile.
The Critic
Korean Fail. Very disappointing... I've been to a few korean bbq places previously, and i would have to admit this is the WORST!
The meat was bland, and the cooktop was not ideal as it stated "Charcoal" ... There was one piece of charcoal surround by a gas flame... Seriously? I rarely complain about the service, but this was bad at the fact that the waitresses barely know whats going on. When we asked for a Coke, she looked at us confused and it took a while for her to understand. Don't even bother! I suggest try the Korean BBQ places on Canterbury Rd!

Great food! Tried the cbd and loved it do thought I would check out my local. Just as good if not better!
Chopstik_gal
Worst Korean restaurant in town. This is the worst Korean restaurant I've ever had the misfortune of visiting. The service was extremely bad. We had to ask for everything: can we have some cutlery please, can we have some glass for the water please, can we have the lettuce we ordered please, etc. The waitress responded by rolling her eyes and throwing plates onto the table. If the food had been better I might have been able to put up with their attitude a little better. But disappointingly, the food was very ordinary, it the lacked care factor. From where I was sitting, i could see into the kitchen a little. There were pots and pans on the floor and I actually saw one of the waiters scooping something out of one of these pots straight onto the serving plates. Very disgusting. All in all, it was a pretty bad dining experience, I wouldn't pay half what I paid. Never going back again!!
Sally
Not happy. Food was average and so was the service. The whole restaurant environment looks dull and boring. Spoilt my weekend. Not going back again....ever.

Very Dissappointed. Environment - chinese takeaway style. Staff - not menu knowledgable. Dont care attitude. On website and phone they said BYO for 2$/person but charged us $3. Said they will turn over meat for us but got busy and all our chicken got burnt. Upon complaining they said sorry we got busy. Food - have tried several korean restaurants. For food, will rate it 4/10. False info provided on phone- about BYO as above, unlimited beer is only limited to 1 hour, 2% surcharge if payment made by eftpos or credit card

Incredible flavours. I love this place. It can be confusing sometimes to a white Australian like me that has almost zero understanding of Korean culture, however I had a great time. When I asked for advice, I found the staff were very friendly and helpful, without being condescending in any way. They seemed genuinely pleased to have custom from anyone and everyone, not that they were dead quiet, they were just polite.

The flavours were surprisingly good, the serves generous, and the staff super friendly, efficient and fast.
John
Déjà vu. My experience pretty much mirrors that of "KT". I was part of a larger group that was forced to slit into 2 groups. Really no complaints about the food itself, we had a nice blend of meals. If I have one whinge apart from having to split our group it would be that everything felt a little rushed.
KT
Food is great. Service, not so much.. Very small place. Went with a larger group of about 16, and they made us sit on a table of 12 and a table of 4. There was room, but they refused to add another table on the end of the 12 seats.

Staff were preoccupied and took a while for someone to come and take our order.

Food was simple and great! No problems at all there. Tasty and very generous servings. Buffet sets were well worth the cost.

Definitely recommended. Will be coming back again.
Nick
Insatiable. Fabulous! I was so excited to finally get organised to eat at Korean BBQ Box Hill. It was a cosy, smokey (BBQ not cigarette) place. The food was very tasty and the beer plentiful (extra $10 for unlimited Korean beer). Unlimited kimchi goes well with the beer. The staff were very friendly and efficient in turning the cooking meat and preparing it to serve. Thank goodness I booked in advance.

Interesting menu, good food. Nice small restaurant, good menu, good food, nice staff. Nothing too flash but sometimes that's what you want!
