Review Middleborough Latte Cafe - Box Hill

Sharing my experience as a warning to others with a nut allergy. I ordered a chicken risotto off door dash. The description was ‘with mushroom, onion, spinach and Parmesan with chicken’. No mention of nuts. I asked for no mushrooms and extra Parmesan. When I got the dish, it was coated in what I thought was cheese so I took a bite and a few seconds later I could feel my throat swelling up. I’m allergic to cashew nuts, pine nuts and pistachios. I called the cafe and was told they had put ‘cashew Parmesan cheese’ as a vegan option - I never indicated I was vegan and am not sure why they didn’t put normal Parmesan instead. The person I spoke to said ‘I assume you wanted a healthy option’ - what???? I’m honestly outraged a mistake like that could be made given the high standards of food safety in Australia. Luckily I am okay but could have been a worse outcome for another allergy sufferer.

What a delight. As many other reviews have said, the food is well presented, tasty & the service is excellent. The venue is clean & modern. It has a cozy atmosphere that makes you want to spend time there and an aroma of “something yummy” cooking greets you as you come through the door. Family run with attention to detail while being attentive. You get an impression that they care. 5 out of 5.

The coffee is just the best! The place has a home-like atmosphere, with attentive and very kind staff. I highly recommend.

The bedside manners here are amazing and everyone there is so fun and nice. The cafe is clean and drinks are amazing, especially the greenies smoothies!

Real score 3.4. We’ve got a buzzy little cafe here in the Kerrimuir shopping centre. It was enjoying good patronage on another sparkling sunny day. That northern light was prominent again and there was barely a breath of wind. This weather can’t last - a chill wind from Antarctica is due soon - so people were out and about. Today suggested the cafe appeals to the older demographic. But, who knows what the weekend brings. I fancied the veggie breakfast which turned out to be large, generous and tasty. I’m not sure how much was made on site - the beans and the hash brown, for example - looked and tasted like bought ones. There were some inconsistencies too. One of the poached eggs was cooked and beautifully runny. The other had a decidedly firm yolk. I’m pretty easy to please though and enjoyed the dish. It was a good size and it was nicely presented and delicious in its own way. I gained an impression that they were either one staff member short or had deliberately lean staffing. The energetic lady who served me seemed run off her feet. Maybe it was the good weather bringing out an unexpected number of people. Who knows. It led to a couple of small mistakes, eg my sparkling water bring delivered late after the meal arrived and then with no glass only a bottle. These were minor things though. I found myself liking the cafe which offers good reasonably priced meals. The service too was happy, amiable and obliging. I’d happily return here.

Great place for a coffee catch up. The place is not too busy on Friday arvo. Have varieties of food if you are hungry. I only ordered a latte, which taste great.

Very good breakfasts, coffees are great and plenty of seating inside and out.

One of the best cafés I've been to! Friendly staff, delicious food and not to mention...generous portion sizes. Definitely try the avo-smash!!

The best place for coffee as the coffee is one of the best in my area and the matcha latte is the best I have ever had and I always order it every time. Orange flourless cake is good as well.

Cute and comfy cafe with delicious meals made with such fresh ingredients. Great service with a smile!

Lovely family owned cafe! There’s a good range of brunch options, which are all quite delicious. However, there’s nothing particularly special that makes this brunch spot stand out. It is nevertheless a great place to relax and enjoy a good breakfast, tucked away on a corner of a neighbourhood strip of shops.

I don’t usually write reviews but this smashed avo with chorizo and smoked salmon was by far the absolute best I’ve had.. felt like I owe it to them to write one. Stunning presentation and tastes Devine! (No filter photo) Thumbs up for the chef William.
Highly recommend this dish and coffee here is great too!

Coffee was acceptable but the food was lacking in taste and presentation. Lava Omelette was very oily, watery and tasteless when it was supposed to be spiced. Chorizo tasted more like spam. Bao was dry and barely sauced. What we got was not reflective of the description in the menu at all; maybe the cafe is under new management. Will not be returning.

Bit of a nineties naughties feel walking into here, the traditional breakfast items are all covered plus some basic brunch extras. The pricing is on the lower side for what you are getting. This venue caters for those who want good old fashioned breakfast, but the coffee isn’t the best here

Took away the beef lasagna today for a quick snack. It tasted good while still hot. Came with salad which balanced the meal. Would come back to try more dishes there!

Stopped in here today for a coffee and a mint slice. I'm not much of a sweet tooth, so I didn't even get through half of the slice, but it was pretty tasty. The coffee was quite good and the staff are friendly.

Chicken salad was fantastic, my latte was beautifully presented and tasted creamy just the way I like it.
Service was given with a smile, I will be backpack when I'm in the area.

this coffee shop is very unusual and unique for a local caffe , I enjoyed the experience of this family business and the service very much

best coffee in this area
service is very family oriented
highly recomended

Brekkie menu says sourdough toast but got regular white toast. Makes me wonder if other claims like free range eggs are trustworthy.........

We came here for a coffee and ended up ordering lunch as well ...
They have a large variety of hot drinks to order .. including matcha green tea ...
I ordered a lactose free cappuccino and the Spanish style omelette.. the coffee was gorgeous and the omelette was divine ... I couldn't eat it all and the staff were very obliging in giving me a take away container so I could take the rest home ..and even asked if the meal was ok .. we reassured them it was lovely .. but I was full and also running late for an appointment ..
My friend ordered an almond milk coffee and creamy eggs with smoked salmon .. he said it was the best almond milk coffee he's had ... and the creamy eggs with smoked salmon was a good size and delicious ..he walked out saying that we'd definitely have to come back ..
We paid $41 for the two coffees and two meals which were generous portions ... so for $20.50 each for a coffee and meal .. we found it very reasonable in price .. the cafe itself is a decent size with ample seating .. and a few outdoor tables too .. the staff were friendly and eager to please ..my only advice would be not to sit near the sliding door in winter as people come and go and they don't close the door properly and the cold breeze blows in ..
I agree with my friend in that we'll definitely be back again 😄

Very disappointed with the quality of food and overall experience my friends and I had at Latte Cafe. Our food took around an hour to come out. So incredibly long to wait and the wait was unfortunately not worth it.

When my food came out I instantly noticed that my toast was buttered even after repeatedly telling the cashier that I cannot eat dairy or eggs upon ordering and was made to feel annoying when requesting this. I knew that she wasn't taking me very seriously and was made me feel uncomfortable.
After turning over the bread it was %100 obvious that the other side had been buttered but after our food was brought out the wait staff didn't come over and I was unable to get their attention so just didn't eat my toast. Overall for $16 I ate one tomato, a small handful of undercooked mushrooms, one hash brown and a small handful of spinach.
So disappointing and still hungry.

They forgot my friends bacon and by the time they brought his back out the rest of the table had finished or their food had gone ice cold.
Feel like it was a big waste of time and money.

How lucky I am to have Middleborough Latte Cafe right around the corner from where I live. Love this little cafe, coffee amazing (the best around), new menu delicious and the staff are just so beautiful and friendly. Always a great experience.
Can easily spend a couple of hours at a time here, relaxing, reading, and catching up with family and friends.
Highly recommend!!

The best coffee in Box Hill. I have been going to Middleborough Cafe Late for years because the coffee is reliable and the cakes perfect! My favourite place to stop before work for a caffeine fix. Friendly, happy staff.

UPDATE 20/04/2017
CASH ONLY now
Ambiance is a bit duller now, looks messier too.
Latte is needing some improvement.

Much has changed and improved ....

That's always great to see, especially when it has a prominent corner location, lots of natural sunlight's and a pleasure to be inside.

Good coffee and food especially.

Not sure why I haven't reviewed here sooner, it's a lovely little neighbourhood cafe. The hot drink selection is quite vast. The Hollandaise for the Eggs Benedict or Florentine is delicious, and the breakfasts (all day) are all generous in size. There's a friendly neighbourhood atmosphere too, with lots of regulars popping in for their morning coffee and chat with the amiable staff. haven't tried lunches. There is a lovely selection of cakes and (giant - why are they so big these days) biscuits.

Nice little cafe with nice ambience. Food was served relatively fast and good service. Good portion size and not too oily. Price is reasonable too.

I decided to have the ‘Soup of the day ($9.50)’ as it was a cold and miserable day. The soup was pumpkin soup which is one of my favourites. I received a very generous bowl of yummy soup with a swirl of cream and some toast for dipping. The soup had a sweet, rich flavour.

The staff at this cafe are so friendly, they make you feel at home. The coffee is to die for and second to none. The chicken beetroot salad is dilicous. *****

Great little cafe ....nothing to complain about here.
I had the smashed avo breakfast it was delicious and there serving size was quite large . I had a green tea latte, it is very good and its nice to see some optioins for those of us who don't actually drink coffee.
Staff are lovley and friendly as well.
Hungry Cat
The worst cafe I've been to in a long time. I had the smashed avocado with pine nuts. The bread was thin airy cob loaves. They treat the avocado like butter. I was so thin I could see the bread thru it. I was still so hungry afterwards and it cost $16. My husband had the Mediterranean veggies focaccia. The veggies had gone off and smelt bad. He could not swallow it. Told the waitress and she just took it away. Since we had to pay for the food first she didn't bother to come back or offer us anything else or a refund. It's the second time I was there. I usually give them a second chance but never again. Absolutely terrible.

Very friendly staffs, with great coffee & food. My wife loved avocado egg very much! Strongly recommend to try it out. I personally loved the coffee there very much, everyday 1-2 lattes.

Fantastic new menu I had creamy eggs with smoked salmon. Scrambled free range eggs with smoked salmon, smashed avocado, pesto & feta on sour dough brilliant value at $16.90 and fantastic flavour very filling thanks guys.

Walked in, seated self, no water given until meal provided 30 mins later. Poached eggs were cooked through, sausage was clearly bought from Coles in a pack and the mushrooms were cooked in an odd curry sauce in the plain big breakfast. Disappointing.

Not a bad little local cafe - great bacon & egg focaccia's. Some good meals and some not so good but reasonably priced.

1) Coffees - all fine, nothing to complain about. I like that the use Fairtrade and organic coffee but service is a tad slow so this place is not ideal if you're on the run or want a quick meal but service if swift and friendly enough.

2) Bacon & egg on turkish bread were excellent. The bacon was lean, not fatty, perfectly cooked and very generous in portions (I think I had 3 rashers of rindless bacon) plus the eggs were perfectly cooked with a tiny bit of gooey yolk inside. It was finished off with nicely toasted turkish bread

Our party also had the bacon & egg on toast which was fine (3 options of bread - white, wholemeal and multigrain) but not as good as the turkish bread.

3) Veggie focaccia - not that good. The filling was fine but I think there could have been more veggies but our main gripe was that the focaccia was small in size and quite floury. Not the best focaccia bread we've had but it did come with a generous sized, fresh side salad whiched helped to round the meal out.

4) Milkshakes - gross. It's made from chocolate syrup and you can really taste the artificial flavours. Give this one a miss.

Note: this place is frequented by mainly elderly clientele so if you're looking for a hip, vibrant place, this isn't it. Plus, the softly piped, boring classical music may make me fall asleep in your meal.

Delicious Food and absolutely GORGEOUS coffee! The service is fantastic and everything here is VERY reasonably priced. I have been back many times and I have to say I definitely think this is the BEST cafe in the Box Hill area.

Creamy smoked salmon w/ scrambled eggs & pesto smothered toast is a HIT. Recently had their Lamb Shank w/ mash and it was cooked to mouthwatering perfection for a VERY Reasonable price.. Coffee is AMAZING and their Hot Chocs & Chai latte's are to die for..This cafe has many return customers, every time I visit there are many regulars complimenting on how great the coffee is. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to give this cafe a try! Also very Kids and Family friendly. Will be back SOON!!

Creamy eggs with smoked salmon!! Was very nice :) staff are friendly! Don't come here if you want proper kitchen made cafe food - I think some of the stuff they use is pre-made/canned but if you want a quick and cheap meal (WITH A SIDE OF REALLY NICE COFFEE) then why not give this place a shot :) I enjoyed it regardless.

Its a really cafe I ve ever been to, I am impressed with the coffee they make

Great old style cafe. The Middleborough Latte Cafe is the original cafe in the strip. I go there for their creamy mochas which are the best in the area :) Its not as bustling and trendy as its competition, so you can sit there and have a relaxed coffee. The down side is that being so quiet, if I bring my noisy kids, they tend to disturb the other customers having their quiet coffees.

My experence. As a frequent user of this cafe, i must say i was very impressed my breakfast was huge and delish but there coffee is to die for . Highly recommend. 5 stars

Highly Recommend. I have been to this cafe twice now to grab a bite to eat and a green tea before heading off for work and I have to say that I was quite surprised by the service and the food.
I have ordered the vegetarian breakfast (with added bacon) and it was delicious. I am usually quite picky about my bacon and prefer it to be on the well-cooked side rather than lightly cooked. I would say that the bacon was cooked in between these stages and was still very tasty and not too oily. The eggs were very tasty and slightly creamy, and in no way were they over-cooked or undercooked (in my opinion). If anything, the serving size was quite large and you could quite easily share this meal with another person and still be satisfied.
I only had to wait about 2 minutes for my tea to come out to my table, which was fine because I prefer my tea to cool down a little before I drink it anyway.
My meal probably took about 10 minutes (possibly 15) to come out, although I was busy reading the complimentary newspaper and didn't really notice. I was there at a time when it was not very busy (maybe 6 other diners) so I would assume that during a lunch rush service might become a little slower.
I also ordered the mince beef item (which is contained within the all-day breakfast menu) and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the meal, and the portion size for this was much smaller than my previous meal (but still satisfying).
I have (so far) had no issues with parking near here; however, I have not visited on the weekend so I can imagine it would probably be much busier on a Saturday morning!
All-in-all, I am planning on heading back to the cafe today for lunch before heading to work in the afternoon!

Great allrounder. I am very picky about where I buy and spend time with my coffee as well as having something nice to eat if i feel hungry.
This is my little local cafe I avoided it for awhile it wasnt winning any prizes for interior design and I was admittedly suspicious of the 50 something asian woman behind the counter who I wrongly thought would be better placed in an asian takeaway.
But quite surprisingly and delightedly was I punished for my racially wrong assumptions.
Fiona makes great coffee you only have to watch her whilst sipping your own to realise she has the gift. Her son Mike is good too and they are passionate about what they do.
I am rather ahsamed that I avoided them in the beginning and vow never to judge anyone till I try their wares.
The cafe decor might not be uber savvy but its comfortable and pleasant to spend time in they have a good range of reading material and the food is nice and wholesome.
So for a coffee snob with very high standards and a somewhat more open view to the cafe scene I happily visit this cafe for fairtrade coffee a couple of times a week. Its not the tastiest blend but its consistently good and the friendly barissters and atmosphere make the experience an enjoyable one.

Great coffee and amazing food , the staff are very friendly. Highly recommended to all loves of good coffee.

This caffe seems to have everything I need ! . Great coffee,Great Food,Great Friendly Service,
Would Defiantly recommend.

Coffee consistent, service slow. This is the neighbourhood café where everyone knows your name! The 3 times Ive been there the coffee has been very good and fairtrade at that. The service is slow and they seem to get confused very easily with someone trying to give me a sandwich twice that I didn't order. I have not tried the food but for friendliest and the warm vibe you get about this place its worth a visit. Just don't be in a rush when you come here...

I spend more time here than at home. Great coffee, reasonable prices and lovely staff.

HAPPY AS LARRY!. I have to say they got the best coffee in town, it's absolutely amazing! You probably won't be able to find anything close to it nearby.. Their breakfast is very artistic yet very authentic and their sandwiches are absolutely delicious. With great service from their friendly staff keeps me in and outta there five times a week!!
Alex
Brilliant shop. I eat at this cafe and have coffee's Monday to Friday, the food is excellent and the service is top notch.
I read the article where someone claimed the eggs are microwaved, well i see them cook them on the hot plate or poached in simmering water so i don't know where this came from.
The staff are excellent , friendly and smiling, the food quality is excellent, i do not say this lightly, i am a fussy eater and do not waste money in bad shops, this place is brilliant and that is why i go there 5 days a week!!!!!
The coffee they use is very good!!!!!!!

Awesome local cafe, foods taste nice as always. Love their new menu, especially the pancakes and the cakesffs are friendly, feel like coming back home.
Audrey Tan
Really friendly staff. Coffee was ok. Food took awhile to be served, their version of "sourdough" is sliced sandwich toast and their poached eggs are pretty much hard boiled - or microwaved.
I ordered eggs Benedict and my
Hollandaise sauce looked creamy white. My friend and i ordered hash browns but they told us they only had one serve left (at 8:30am)???
Not impressed. But I guess this is what you'd get for the low price they offer?
Mn Mn
Coffee is ok but DO NOT eat here. We got microwaved eggs that were indelible, and fried eggs were done in the grill. Trying to do too much without a kitchen.
Rachel
Jess knows customers by name. This is my local cafe where I get my takeaway coffee. Best thing about this place is the coffee - it is earthy but great-tasting and it really grows on you, as evidenced by the huge number of loyal customers that drop in for coffee daily. Locally known as Jess's, it's many regulars are often spoken to by name and somehow the owners manage to remember how they all take their coffee as well!

Being situated on the end of a strip of shops with ample parking means that it's great for getting my takeaway and you can pay the bills at the PO and get your milk and bread at the same time.
Margaret
Margaret. Great service and very friendly. babies and prams welcome. Coffee is very good, service can be a bit slower during the morning rush. Great place to meet friends or business associates. Highly recommended.

Sitting at the end of the Kerrimuir shopping strip, this cafe is popular with the locals for a traditional weekend breakfast / coffee. If you're after a cuppa and a toasted sandwich (or something similar) this is the place. Service is friendly. Parking at the shopping strip can sometimes be a challenge on Saturday morning though.
