Review Food Stories Chinese Kitchen - Box Hill

What a great place for authentic Beijing cuisines. We tried their tofu with little spice which was so delicious. Firm, spongy and great aromatic flavours. The deep fried pork was sizzling hot when it arrived and was so crispy. The fried rice was plain and not too oily making it a perfect combo with the other dishes. The dumplings are also wrapped fresh so there was minimal juice that came out of them.

I don’t know why this place has so many bad reviews. We had lunch at this restaurant few days ago and it was great! This is an old school restaurant nothing fancy but all the food we had was delicious and service was pretty quick. What we had: 🍖 Crispy pork ribs (holy moly! This one was so good, reminds me of home! Very delicious) 🥬 stir fried cabbage with chilli (good) 🍚 Beef fried rice with soy sauce (amazing! Must try) 🦪 XO Pippies (great) 🍗 Signature spicy chicken (it’s massive and so delicious! The only down side was it had too many small bones) Price is good and generous portion!

A traditional Chinese feast is what we need on cold winter evenings. @foodstories.au in Boxhill is a perfect classic and very, very old school Chinese restaurant serving the most authentic Chinese food you’ll ever find in Melbourne. What we had here: Whole baby chicken with Sichuan sauce and peppercorn, really spicy but very addictive, might leave your mouth numb from the heat and leaves a tingling after taste, yet it was honestly so comforting and a perfect antidote to beat the crazy Melbourne cold. Must try, if you’re good with spicy food. Pork hock, the tender and easily melt—in-the-mouth pork hock is a must try, feels very fresh to eat it. Sizzling stir beef with onions and capsicums, this one is packed with so much flavours and is mildly spicy and the tender juicy beef pieces are really yummy. Highly recommend Pork dumplings, very comforting, and the fillings is really delicious. Must try. Special fried rice, wow this was my absolute favourite, had simple and satisfying flavours and tasted very mouthwatering. Must try for sure. The prices are very standard and their elaborate menu features so many varieties of tasty Chinese food. So why not visit this weekend @foodstories.au with your friends/family for dinner/lunch.

Take forever for a hot pot to be ready!! We waited one and half hours, so did everyone before and after us! And the hot pot costs $22! Just some water with little spring onion! The waiter said will give us discount, which turned out to be $0.30! Never come back again!

Horrible food ! Horrible customer service ! I had the worst restaurant experience in Melbourne. I ordered chicken noodle, the chicken tasted weird. I ask the waiter to rework or replace with a nice, polite voice tone and language. The waiter responded with abusive language and personal attack. I asked to speak to the owner to clarify the situation and give feedback of the poor customer service, and was rudely refused. I will never eat in here again, and will stop all my friends visiting as well. This restaurant should be taken over by another owner who has good healthy food and good customer service !

Noodle was ok. Soup was average. Chicken was frozen. Service was below average.

Good food with affordable prices!! some of the dishes tasted exactly like when I had it in China, made me homesick🥺 If you are into Chinese food, you should try it out. The only thing that wasn’t perfect is that they really should work on the service, staff training.

Great choose your own food and they cook in a tasty soup.

Paid using SoSure eating app to get the app discount but when paying the bill, they added a 10% surcharge on top of the total bill , a charge that SoSure charges the restaurant which is then passed on the consumer ?? AVOID. Highly illegal, going to contact Consumer Affairs and Sosure first thing tomorrow

Horrible experience we left the place very unhappy!

My husband and i have ordered the fried chicken with chef special sauce + steamed rice i could not remember how much it was, beef brisket with homemade noodles which is $13 and 2 cans of coke, the fried chicken came first along with the steamed rice,we waited for ages and i had to ask the waitress where my food is coz my husband was starving and his food was getting cold then 5 mins later my food finally arrived.

the waitress was miserable couldn't even speak english and the boss lady took my chopsticks(it happened after we ordered our food) and wasn't friendly either.

They charged us $48 altogether. I mean WTH such a rip off!

I think I'm starting to scrape the bottom of the food barrel in Box Hill.

If you are after mediocre Chinese food coupled with poor service, then have I got a story for you.

The service here was bordering on atrocious. The dumplings we ordered were extremely ordinary. The atmosphere was quite depressing.

The end.

Food 2/5
service 2/5
environment 3/5

The pork is cold! Lobster feels not the whole one and not fresh at all. And when we complain to retire the lobster back to kitchen, the waiter say yes and later gave a nice one to us! We feel we were be foolish that time! I wouldn't come backwere

Terrible service, we ordered 6 dishes and literally waited for more than 30mins for the first one to come, also the staff was quite rude and unfriendly, I would never come again and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

I'm not accustomed to northern China food, I'm more a Cantonese food type of person. As such I found the food here very heavy flavoured, too strong. Spicy dishes have peppercorns and usually lots of oil. For those who are used to these types of cuisine it should be alright. For people who usually eat canton food just stick to your usual canton restaurants.

Always being here after busy work because it opens until 2:00am. :)
The dishes are above average but not perfect. At least is the best one among the station st.
A bit different but worth a try .... BYO, CASH ONLY or 2% surcharge on credit card.
Converted from its previous Cantonese restaurant, new name, new staff, new menu with photos, although some are very unfamiliar "stuff" (steambot, bones, etc.) it was quite easy to explore.

Not your common Chinese (Cantonese style) food that Melbournians grew up with, more like a Sichuan Chinese mainland style .....

Food wise; Garlic Chinese Water Spinach was a tad salty but tasty. Smelly/Stinky Tofu is not so smelly, also tasty with a bit of pepper Sichuan on it. Pork & Century Egg congee is a bit plain but not bad and huge for about $10.50.

BYO for $1 corkage, cheap and reasonable..... no big bubble wine stem glass, but it does the job.
Overall, a good enjoyable new food venture to the changing of Box Hill culinary scene, bring CASH or 2% surcharge on credit card, just like any other good Chinese restaurants :-) JT - 22/06/2017.

A fairly new restaurant in Box Hill, I have been here only once however my first impression on this restaurant is second to none, well at least around box hill. We ordered stir fried chicken with oyster sauce, chicken dumplings and rice. The service was prompt, the food was delicious with big portions of it. Although I did find it a bit awkward that when I asked for water they served hot water so I had to order cold water again. But that was just the downside of the restaurant. Also there is another thing that I want to mention if you are thinking about visiting the restaurant is that they do not give you the menu that is shown outside and you need to ask for it which I felt was a bit weird since the menu they provide is a bit expensive version of the one shown outside; nonetheless the environment was super nice with clean and modern interior with good food after all that's what matters. Will be visiting the place again soon and hopefully I will be increasing the rating too.

Went there yesterday (Fri 28 Oct) as a family of six to celebrate the niece's birthday. Ordered quite a lot of dishes (being a laowai can't remember fancy Chinese names...LOL - have a look at the pix). Nice and quiet place (got busy later, it was Friday afternoon), friendly and prompt service. Quality of food - very good. Prices - very decent! Cuisine - I am told it's Beijing )))) Overall impression - good. Recommended.

Good food, tasty but there is room for improvement in the service. Only one person working, understaffed, hot water provided was luke warm at best.

We went there on Sunday afternoon. The place was clean and tidy. We had home made braised pork hock and stir fried chicken noodle with satay sauce.

The pork hock was a cold dish, which was very special and delicious. The jelly-like meat did not taste fatty or greasy. Chicken noodle was nice too.

There was room to improve for service. We were not offered with any tea or water.

We will go back to try more cold dishes.

--------------------------------------------------------

We went there again for dinner. We had the cold dish, pork hock again, which was still tasty.

The homemade chicken dumplings were very nice, in which the fragrance of the mushroom and meat blend very well together.
