Review Yami Yami - Box Hill

Will Kim
Loved this place! They offer great Korean food and the staff are friendly (I think it's run by a family). I took my Australian friend here and we both walked out happy :)
Hello ?
I'm absolutely speechless, ordered 18 dollars of Kimchi jigae, couldn't find the review on ubereats, I'll give this restaurant 0 star if it's possible, really really bad experience. Will never get food from here again. Please AVOID AT ALL COST!!!

Great for a casual, authentic Korean dine. The staff were nice and food came out fast. We ordered quite a few dishes. Firstly, the sizzling spicy baby octopus was tender and little spicy for my liking, but perfect with a bowl of rice. If you love spice, then this is the dish for you. Not many places do octopus so definitely an extra point to Yami Yami! We were craving noodles, so we also ordered spicy cold noodles and japchae. Both great and authentic. And of course, my all-time favourite at Korean restaurants, we ordered tteokbokki, which was topped up with two mandus. The rice cake was extremely soft and chewy. Overall, perfect place for an easy eat.

Have been going to this place for years and it never disappoints. Love the bulgolgi and chili karage chicken šŸ˜ heaps of good dishes to choose from, great spot for days that you want Korean food but donā€™t want to do bbq yourself

Food āœ”āœ” āœ” not as generous as before ... Bim Bim Bap was full of rice and two spoonful of spicy pork, great presentation though, hit bowl. Venue āœ”āœ”āœ”āœ” much improved, not as smelly, new AC, fresh paint. Service āœ”āœ”āœ”āœ” juat adequate PREVIOUS For what they are charging for lunch, 4 *

Went here for dinner and it was the biggest mistake of my life. Ordered the chicken Bimbim bap and all I got was four pieces of chicken. Waitstaff also took away the sauce before we had even finished eating my meal, which is just plain rude. For $15 this was way overpriced for what I got, the beef bimbim bap was no better either (as per photo below). Avoid this place!

Been coming here for years ordering the same, tastes great every time. Owner sometimes rushes you to get out if you take too long šŸ˜‘

Too pricey for the quality and the taste provided. $42 for a Budae Jjigae, which was mostly consisted of cheap ingredients such as spam, sausages, tofu, baked bean, vegies and with only tiny bits of pork (don't what part). Korean restaurants in the city would serve the same dish with much more generous amount of pork belly, tastier broth, and cheaper price.

Have only had takeaway - ordered twice, both times great standard Korean food. The tteokbokki is spicy and a very large portion size - great value.

This place seems to attract extremely polarising reviews. We visited with an open mind on a weekday for lunch. The waitress brought out cutlery and water almost immediately. <br/><br/>We ordered:<br/>Japchae - the noodles were well prepared and delicious. <br/>Hotpot Baby Octopus Bibimbap - this came out piping hot and was full of flavour. <br/>Teriyaki Chicken - a generous serve of well seasoned chicken. <br/><br/>We also enjoyed the the side dishes - the pickled cucumbers were refreshing and crunchy. <br/><br/>So we actually had a pleasantly yummy experience at Yami Yami today and hopefully this will be replicated for everyone in the future!

Expensive with small portions , service is non existent. Photo shows what kind of portions you get for a main :) $21

If I could give a zero star, I would love to.<br/>Extremely bad experience, impolite staff and force us to order main dishes for each. Told us rudely, we have a minimum number of we spend. This made me annoyed as I just wanna spend the meal with my girlfriend.<br/>Donā€™t go there, zero star for the awful attitude.

It was nice.

A nice Korean restaurant in box hill. Price is decent here. Love the Tteokbokki with cheese and mandu. My wife and I have tried their lunch menu and it's good price and walking out full. The service is great.
TimInMelb
Have been 4 or 5 times here. I love the "chilli rice cake with cheese" dish here - I think it's called something like "pokocki", plus i always order the fizzy grape drink. Place is small but the menu is moderately extensive. Great for a quick "cheap and cheerful" eat.

3.5 <br/><br/>This is where you go if you want a semi cheap Korean meal in boxhill ! Is it the best Iā€™ve had ? No but it does satisfy mu cravings . I like the cheese corn, the stone rice , the sweet potato noodles and the Kim chi soup!
Foodie Fio
Food is great, the boss is super friendly and always offers free drinks to the kids! Love the tteokbokki and their samgaetang! Samgaetang used with fresh chicken unlike many korean eateries in Melbourne
Picky But Fair
Ubereat.Ā  Had the following<br/><br/>1. Beef Gamjatang - Very flavourful spicy broth. Tender, fall-off-the-bone pork with soft potatoes sucking up the beautiful flavour.Ā  Surpassed expectations!! (5/5)<br/>2. Beef Bulgolgi - Cooked slightly over, a bit too chewy. Flavour fairly vanilla (3+/5)<br/><br/>Included free side dishes with Uber on request.<br/>Had a wonderful uber meal on a cold winter day.<br/>Dishes should taste better at the restaurants.
Kei
A pretty average Korean eatery, we ordered Kimchi soup and tteokbokki and they were alright. Would only return if in the area and craving Korean.

The worst meal. Bad service and attitude. We actually ordered three main meal but the waitressā€™s ear went wrong (must be deafļ¼‰and the whole order was wrong. The boss there didnā€™t say any sorry. What a excellent restaurant! I believe that this restaurant will be closed in recent months. Yamiyami is not the right name for these people. Forever bye! God bless you.

Don't ever waste your money in this restaurant.<br/>The worst restaurant I have ever dined in! Bad service. Food average - not great.<br/>Most disappointing is the rudeness of service. Bad bad service !!!! If there is a no star rating, I will mark that. Not even worthy of a 1 star.
ģ“ģ§€ķ˜œ
THE worst restaurant ever!! They have the strangest rule of ā€œone dish per personā€. i visited this restaurant for dinner with my two friends, and decided to order one dish to share as we werenā€™t very hungry. when I called the staff to order our meals, she refused to take our order as there was one dish and three of us, and apparently we had to order one dish per person. How ridiculous!! so we decided to order two more dishes along with the main meal, but she stops us to say that ā€œthese two dishes count as 1 because they are entreesā€. Keep in mind that we really were not hungry and didnā€™t want to waste food and money. Furthermore, as we were forced to order more than we wanted, we took our time to decide and the waitress would come every 30 seconds asking if we are ready to order, when we asked for a bit more time she rudely questioned ā€œhow long are you going to take?ā€ I have never been this disappointed. I would give them a 0 if I could. PLEASE AVOID!!
MELBFOODIEEE
delicious korean food - price was a bit more expensive than some others but thereā€™s a few small differences in quality that sets them apart. the bento box was filled with the usual rice and sizzling meat choice (we got spicy pork) but also surprisingly came with several different sides! all in all, i would come back to try some of their other authentic dishes.

Points for: dakgalbiĀ <br/><br/> Yami Yami are known for their spicy pan fried chicken (dakgalbi). Not many Korean restaurants do this properly, but here it's a feast.Ā <br/>You can easily feed 4 people with the portion for 2. It comes out in a large circle pan and you can eat straight off it, or use lettuce to wrap.<br/>Add in a few other ingredients like ricand finish off with fried rice with seaweed, and it's a very satisfying meal.Ā <br/>You also get the egg souffle with it, which is traditionally eaten with dakgalbi. It's soft and feels cleansing.<br/>The jokbal is also really soft and tender. The pork trotters are stewed in a soy broth, cooled and sliced. There's a bit of meat on eat bite, some collagen, tendon and skin. Add some fresh garlic and soy bean paste, into some lettuce and it's a beautiful bite.

Another Korean restaurant in Boxhill, Overall is fairly average, Beef is quite tender. Hotpot Slightly too garlicy for my liking. Slightly expensive compare to other ones in town.
Melbourne Culinary
Although Yami Yami has 3 restaurants throughout Melbourne, I have only ever visited their Box Hill location. They mainly serve a large variety of Korean comfort foods, which makes it a great place to visit if you aren't quite sure what you want to eat. But as they are a Korean/Japanese restaurant, if you look closely at their menu you will notice that they also serve some Japanese favourites, such as takoyaki and karaage.
Jasmine Ong
Iā€™m not a customer here but I came here with a group of friends only to leave before successfully putting our order through. There were 8 of us and we were going to share between 7 dish. We were told we werenā€™t allowed to and had to order a main dish for each person, excluding sides. 7 mains for 8 of us, we didnā€™t want to give in and so we decided to leave the restaurant.

This little restaurant serves our favourite Korean food in Box Hill. Very homey dishes with authentic flavours, and friendly service. Our favourite dishes: Sundobu Jigae (spicy soft tofu and seafood soup) and LA Galbi (grilled marinated beef ribs).

Itā€™s my first time and will be my last time! The worst Korean restaurant in Melbourne which I ever been! I ordered and willing to pay for additional noodles, itā€™s on menu and staff confirmed not yet finished, however the staff and owner insisted not selling and insisted me to take rice as part of standard package without giving a reason. Staff showed unhappiness when I asked why. Driving a return trip of 1.5hours for this restaurant, I deserved at least an answer! Food does not taste good and expensive. Machine problem refusing to accept credit and debit cards, have to pay in cash unexpectedly. I have been to numerous Korean restaurants and all were good, except this which I canā€™t describe by words how disappointed I was!
Bear Noms
Our favourite local Korean joint that we always come back to. Love the spicy cheese chicken and pork bulgogi. Previously served in large portions, however appears to have become smaller at recent times.
Kathy Li
Terrible service. I went there with a friend and ordered food last Saturday for lunch. While we were eating and having a conversation, the waitress came over three times to rush us. First time, she took over the bill to our table. Second time, she came over and tried to take our plates while we still had plenty of food left and still going with our lunch. Third time, she came over and blatantly told us to quickly finish our food and leave because we had been there for just over an hour and it was too long. There was no one at the time waiting for a table. My friend and I were completely shocked by how waitress treated the customers and how rude and disrespectful she was! Worst dining experience ever and I won't recommend it to any one.
Jimmy Lin
Havenā€™t been here for years so I thought I pay my visit and try it out once more but I made the wrong choice to coming here ,the dishes looked like homemade food where the side dishes were dry and hard , ordered the garlic prawn on rice and was given only 2 prawns and barely any sauce tasting bland and uninspiring and I also ordered the beef ribs , it looked like they cooked it on a site dry pan and then put in onto the plate with uncooked bean sprouts dry and flavorless wonā€™t be coming here again anytime soon <br/>
Sakura
Like it very much. The boss is a nice man that service us well. The lunch bento is really worthy. Price is friendly and the taste is really good.
Shizuko
Fair price with large portion of food. Spicy chicken with cheese is very delicious, high recommend to add extra cheese. However, the waitress is not familiar to food, and her English is not good enough. By the way, this is a CASH ONLY restaurant, please bring your cash in your pocket.
Mini Mooi
Fast service. I had cold spicy noodle for $19. It was nice but little bit salty in the end. My friend had hot baby octopus bibimbap and was looks nice.

I felt like japchae last night. Since I really enjoyed the japchae in the city Yami Yami I thought Iā€™d give the Box Hill branch a go. When I was taken to my seat I realised how cramped the tables were. <br/><br/>My japchae was pretty tasty and there was more meat than other japchaes from other Korean restaurants. I found the city Yami Yami to be generous with their meat too. The side dishes were interesting. There were 2 chunks of potato in the sweet syrup, bean shoots like you get at most Korean restaurants and the Kim chi was more like pickled cabbage with chilli added. I actually liked the Kim chi but I didnā€™t eat much of it because I didnā€™t feel like spicy food. <br/><br/>The people working here were friendly enough however one guy (maybe the manager) went out to have a cigarette and the cigarette smoke was blowing into the restaurant. I think Iā€™d come back here for japchae. Iā€™ve been here before and had the seafood kimchi stew but from memory they werenā€™t generous with the seafood.
Wang Xiandash
the 60 years old boss is racist and this place has to shut down.<br/>i found cockroaches on the table and wall so i told him about it for the food hygiene.<br/>he pretended not to understand English and said to me in Korean saying you stinky Chinese can eat cockroaches and other bugs... but I am Korean and was with Chinese friends.<br/>I was really upset and told him that was uncalled for then he went nuts swearing at me in Korean and kicked us out...<br/><br/>Is he really serious?
Daisycc2828
Extremely rude owner!!! We had six people and there two small tables left so we asked if we could have the table joined and the boss just simply said ā€œIf you want these tables then we have to sit in two different tables or you have to wait for another 30 mins for the six seat tableā€. How ridiculous is that. If we want to sit seperate then we wouldnā€™t even come together and we have been waiting outside 15 mins. Then 3 other customers just came in and without even acknowledging us they got seated in one of the small tables straight away. So we asked if they can call us when they have a table thatā€™s big enough for us and he just simply replied u have to wait outside for another 30mins. Any other restaurants would just easily join two tables and I canā€™t see the reason why itā€™s going to be an issue. As other users said if donā€™t want your day to be ruined then avoid this restaurant! If thereā€™s an option I wonā€™t even give them a one star.
Jamie Xiao
Poor customer service with below average food. Chicken was drier than the Sahara. Avoid the old Korean owner at all costs. If he's walking to your table it means he's going to ask if you've finished your meal; pressuring you to leave the restaurant. The owner's constant pacing and smoke breaks in front of the store is not a welcoming sight. Also keep in mind they have a ridiculous rule requiring every person to order a main meal. So unless you enjoy high speed high pressure dining and the constant unwelcoming glaring from the owner, please avoid.
Catrina Lau
Very poor customer service, basically kicked us out after we just finished despite being a quiet night. Granted the restaurant has limited seating, however, the experience of high pressured dining isn't particularly enjoyble.
Thįŗ£o BĆ¹i
Chicken and cheese served with rice is the best combo with me. Itā€™s a little bit salty but thatā€™s okay. Kimchi was not much. They should give more. Anyway, I still love it
Jo Kissz
I would rather starve for the day than eating in this place, I would give 0 rating if I can. Thanks to the rude old owner I now can save more money for other decent and cheap meal. Never go this place if you don't want to ruin your day.
Ken Junz Chong
I have been to numerous Korean restaurant and never ever I was rejected on the request to have my side dishes filled up. Indeed all I was asking for is to top up 2 chunk of sweetened sweet potatoes. And guess what the reply I got?<br/>"Sorry sir, only 1 serving for each main. If you want to refill, then it is $3". Ridiculous!<br/>So I seek the clarification from the boss and he said yes. Then I just told him you will lose me as a customer in which he cheekily smiling at me like he don't care.<br/><br/>Absolute horrible and rude boss which is the old specky man. Don't bother coming here and have your day ruined for a horrible service and a mediocre food. There's other better choice around.<br/><br/>

The food quality is average.<br/>The customer service is bad especially the older man was terrible.<br/>He was rude and impatient in taking payment.<br/>If he is the owner, it is just too bad!<br/>I will never want to go back there.
Lyndon Lim
Poor quality of food. Beef bulgogi was dry. Spicy squid dish had few squids. Generally pretty disappointing for the average price of $16 to $18 per dish. Box Hill restaurants in general has really unhealthy oily food compared to say Glen Waverley district. Another thrashy poor value box hill restaurant.
Melody Gwyneth Miu
Went there a few times with friends and family as they would like to give it a try. The food is generally average, however, I found it really annoying with the owner's attitude and the services provided, especially when he kept letting his staffs to ask me and my friends to order even though we said there were one more friend to join and we would like to only order for our serves first, he replied us saying that if we didn't order all serves, the restaurant would have to ask us out. That was so rude. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone simply because of the customer service.
Yangliu0212
Its terrible! Everything is just not we expected! We have three people and since one of us have already had lunch, we only want to order a bimbim bun and a spicy chicken. Here is the exciting part! They said we HAVE to order at least three dishes! This is their rule! I have never seen a restaurant does this! Will never come here again!<br/>
Haihaiclarence
This place is has a rediculous rule! You have to order the same or more main dishes than number of customers! Waiter just don't care and when I question their rule one of the waiter said: You decide....this is our rule.<br/><br/>How can someone run business like this ?
Kevin Oh Chia Vin
Must go place for bibimbap lovers. It's so good that I even forgot to add the spicy sauce, which I would usually do to add more flavour. I would highly recommend the chicken version (try eating it without the stone bowl). The kimchi jigae on the other hand is too sour (the CBD branch tastes better).
Jessie Laksmana
Average food. Owner and staff were extremely rude. My two year old was eating slowly and they kicked us out. It was not even 30 minutes since we were there. Not recommended at all.
Skirk
During our most recent lunch visit we ordered a spicy chicken donburi, halfway through the meal we discovered a dead fly in the dish. The waiter was very nice and apologetic about it and removed the dish from our bill, but it did put us off the other dishes we ordered. The bento boxes we had (beef and pork) were average in flavour and texture, if not a little too oily for our liking. Ā <br/><br/>Overall a sub-par dining experience, for the same price there are better (and cleaner) places to eat in Box Hill. We will definitely eat elsewhere next time.
Pingu
The food is not bad but I think the owner brings a negative vibe to the restaurant. Bad customer service and rude. We wanted to sit nearby the counter as it was a cold day but he said no.
Thaddeus Lim
Service of this restaurant was abysmal! Staff and boss was ridiculously rude. Major highlight was that we were promptly asked to leave the restaurant right after we finish our meal. Now the food was moderate but with this kind of service i would rather dine somewhere else instead. Diners BEWARE!

I've had two experiences now at this outlet of Yami Yami, the first of which was disappointing . It was a while ago and we had two sizzling meat dishes. Both tasted old despite (I'm assuming) being made to order. They weren't moist and saucy--quite gluggy and lacking much wholesome quality. For this reason, I avoided going there again for a few years. Recently I returned and had a much better meal. They do quite a good kimchi pancake that was flavourful and fairly crispy. Their naengmyun is quite legit and was nice. I hadn't tried haemultang before, and enjoyed it. Good seafood flavour and generous ingredients, but perhaps could have benefited from some extra flavour in the soup from more bean paste and/or some other ingredients. The galbi was not bad, pretty much standard really. Finally the kimchi fried rice was quite interesting. I wasn't that keen from the appearance of it, because it's served smothered with creamed garlic prawn sauce over the top. However, it turned out to be quite lovely, the sauce made a surprisingly good match to the light kimchi flavour of the rice. Now that I know that there is decent Korean food to be had here, I would come back without any reservations.

The place tends to get crowded during lunch time so we get there early.Ā <br/>Food - good portion size and tasted good. The service was good and we didn't have to wait for too long for the food. Definitely the perfect location at an affordable price for a quick lunch!Ā <br/>Overall, we'll be back soon!
Emily
So insulted that the waiter told us there is a MINIMUM ORDER of 1 MAIN PER PERSON. This seems like a scam considering we saw other tables sharing less dishes and is not written anywhere. The food is good but I would've walked out had my friends not insisted on staying for he food.<br/><br/>Great little restaurant with a big delicious range. The restaurant is very small and a bit tired, but clean. We ordered lunch specials and couldn't finish them because they were so big. The sukiyaki beef donburi had plenty of flavour but I found some of the beef a bit chewy. The pork bulgogi was delicious and had a bit of a spice kick. However it didn't overpower the flavour. Tonkatsu was delicious - moist meat and a crunchy crumb. What more could you want? Teriyaki beef was not at all authentic, just a sweet stirfry.<br/><br/>The menu in store is different to zomato, but I didn't grab a photo of it.
Fat Panda
Came here during lunch, was maybe only two other tables. Female wait staff, friendly attended needs.<br/>Food, pretty stingy for what you pay considering the variety of competitors in the area, taste wise... below standard.
OmNom
Go if you donā€™t mind bad service. You get one chance to order and you better eat fast!<br/><br/>Four of us plus one toddler went there for dinner last Saturday. We were seated on a table for four. My friends had to bring their own highchair as the restaurant doesnā€™t have any. Which was fine.<br/> <br/>We ordered one main each, and towards the end of the meal we wanted to order another pancake as the boys werenā€™t quite full. After the waitress took our order, the owner (a Korean man in his 50s) came and abruptly told us that we canā€™t order any more as there are people waiting outside, and our additional order would be placed at the end of the queue. This was less than half an hour after we got here, while still eating our meal.<br/> <br/>After I expressed how ridiculous his comments were, he reluctantly put through our order. The bill arrived immediately after that at our table without us asking for it, with the additional pancake on it. We decided to cancel the pancake at that point as we did not want to spend any more money there, on principle.<br/> <br/>We paid our bill and left as they were obviously rushing us so they could give the table to other people. As we came out, the owner was outside having a cigarette. I told him what he did to us was not cool, to which he said ā€œwe are a small restaurantā€¦ā€ No apologies whatsoever.<br/> <br/>Our gathering with friends was cut short. We were in and out in half an hour and left with great dissatisfaction, in our tummy and especially with customer service.

I will not go there anymore. Bad services, wait staffs are rude. Went there on Monday night, Sat there for about 5-10 mins for our friends to turned up, the wait staff told us that we can't sit there too long because they were busy, but didn't see any queue. No written on the menu that each person must order 1 main and we forced to ordered 6 main that we struggled to finish all. Served in rushed even the restaurant were not crazy busy. Cleared the empty plates also loud. No politeness when asked us to leave just said "we close soon, pay first" like we will run away without paying the bills..
Snoopy
Sundubo soft tofu spicy soup, favour was alright, but not too much ingredients compared with other restaurants, pipi was a little fishy, maybe not fresh.<br/><br/>Beef bimbibap was okay, very big portion, all the veggies were nicely sliced.<br/><br/>The complimentary kimchi and bean sprout were okay, the kimchi didn't haave too much cabbage like other kimchi, not quite understand the taste of the potato, a little sweet and a little hard.<br/><br/>Overall was okay, just slightly above average.
K347
We have been there a number of times over the years and my personal observation was the quality of food declines with each visit. <br/><br/>The last visit was for lunch a couple of days ago and it somehow confirms my hunch. <br/><br/>My bulgogi was a tad too dry for my liking and for the price, they were less than generous compared to say, the other Korean restaurant we go to in the City. <br/><br/>Can't quite pint down the causes of the inconsistencies of the food. That said, the place is quite well patronised each time we were there. When we are next in Box Hill, unless we ran out of ideas as to which place to eat or yearn for some Korean food, it is unlikely that we will head to Yami Yami anytime soon. <br/><br/>
Joy
Went recently for a birthday celebration and received shocking service. They switched off the burner for our hotspot twice without asking us. Told us there was a minimum spending for dinner despite no mention about such policy on their menu, also the food we ordered were more than we could eat. They also banned us to have the birthday cake in the restaurant! Will never go back to this place!
Carryj85
i got really sick after i had soon doo boo, spicy chicken, cheese and seafood pancakes and entree's.<br/><br/>4 of us went here 2 days ago and all of us had <br/>diarrhea all night also were vomiting.<br/><br/>I called here to complain but the person who answered the phone didn't understand English no matter how many times I spoke slowly.<br/><br/>I told this to my mates and they said they've been there once but never go back cuz the owner of the venue rushes people out when it gets busy. he yells at people who work there treating them like slaves.<br/><br/>I would never come back here again.
MrGeckoZ
We visited there last night, we were quite late, got in around 9:00. After ordering, they wanted us to pay the bill first because they were finalizing the cash register, i asked can I pay by card the guy said no, but I saw other people paying by card (our bill was $50ish). Then, they told us they ran out of side dishes. Next, they told us they will be closing in 5mins (at around 9:30) and gave us take away containers... The food was acceptable, but nothing else was.
Thefoodieaddict
I had the tteokbokki with cheese and it was really tasty but on the pricier side at $17! The portion was reasonable but the sauce was a good spicy, not to the point were you'd burn your tongue. The rice cakes were chewy and the kimchi banchan was amazing! Really enjoyed the kimchi here and would come again for some food Korean food.
Cartman
Decent food and pretty good service from the wait staff. Unfortunately the owner (old guy who usually sits around playing games on his ipad or outside smoking) is a shocker. If your whole group hasn't rocked up yet he starts presurring you to either order or move to a smaller table. The kind of service he offers depends on how much you order. Order heaps of expensive dishes and he'll be your best friend. But don't stick around too long because he gets grumpy again when there are other customers waiting for your table. Don't worry you'll get the hint when you've worn out your welcome. Our man is as subtle as a sledge hammer. In all seriousness if you can put up with this guy's crap you can have a good meal here but never again for us.

substandard place and food ... prices aren't really cheap as well ... won't return ... waiter's finger nails were rimmed with dirt ... yucks
MiSenigmatic
My family and I have been coming here for 5 years and always absolutely loved it. Even though its pricey the food was worth it. Today iI ordered chicken terriyaki my usual and it was a complete dissapointment. Not only was the serving half of what it is usually, the sauce was minimal close to being completely missing. What a complete rip off. 18.50 for some chicken and onion.... This was definitley my last trip there.
SooJung Yeo
Everytime I come here, I always order kimchi fried rice with cream sauce. My husband and I love it!!! I tried to make it at home, but I can't make the same taste.
Alina Chiang
Bad experience... I love yami yami the one in the city, thats the reason we came for the one at Box hill, but I dont understand why there is a minimum order and did not notice at the menu or anywhere in the restaurant, as we ordering the entree, the lady says has to order "2" entree as count to one person order, i dont get it since the entree almost same price as main dish, while we are trying to decide how to reach our minimum order, the lady just walk away without any word to us, as she serving us later, she was rude and impolite, horrible service and bad bad bad experience, pretty sure not coming back ever.
Richard
Just way too expensive for what you get in what is a small shop with not much atmosphere and pretty crowded.<br/>You can get better value in nicer surroundings elsewhere.
Tom
I love yami yami. The bibimbap is amazing as is all of their other dishes. I can specifically recommend the cheese and spicy chicken, definitely a taste of Korea.
Sarah Remy
Food was okay but we got horrible service. My friend ordered a main (Bibimbap, $13) and I ordered an entree dish (Japchae, $12) to be told by the waitress that they have 'minimum order'. I didn't really understand what she meant but eventually she clarified that we need to order two mains, not a main and an entree which was weird since the entree is the same price as the main and the dish I wanted korean potato noodles which was only offered at entree not main size. However, to avoid conflict, I changed my order and also got a bibimbap like my friend. After about 5 minutes of being seated, we were instructed to switch tables and move to a different table in the store (despite the tables being the same size and seating the same amount of people). Halfway through our meal, they printed the bill and placed it on the edge of our table but we never even asked for the bill. This awkwardly sat there for the rest of our meal. When we finished our meal, my friend and I remained seated at the restaurant sipping our water until a man came and took the water from our table without asking us if we were finished or if we wanted anything else. The overall feeling was that they were trying to rush us out of the restaurant despite there being several empty tables and no customers waiting. Very rude and pretty shocking experience. Have never experienced such rude customer service from any restuarant before - usually I eat at a lot of Korean restuarants and they have impeccable customer service!! Very disappointed

Wandered in for some cold buckwheat noodles after some essential Box Hill groceries with my Ma, and were rewarded by yummy bibimbap and buckwheat noodles! <br/><br/>Delicious sides, refreshing noodles and yummy bibimbap, now braving the mad Australian summer. <br/><br/>Until the next hydration station. <br/><br/>York.

My favorite place to go for Korean. No BBQ but delicious food. Not a place I would go on a special night but perfect for a quick feast as they want you in and out pretty quickly!!
Pmoonlight
Stingy stupid korean restaurant! I went there with my friend and 2 of us we ordered 1 entree $14 and another main $14 to share but the manager said that we need to order 2 main at least ! It does not make sense at all because the entree and the main couse's price are almost the same! It not just that... Normally we can refill our side dish (kimchi, sweet potatoes and stuff) but this time i asked the staff to refill the side dish but the manager came in and said that we only ordered 2 dish so we can not refill our side dish!!!!! Isn't that ridiculous?! How come the manager is so stingy and selfish? I always recommend this restaurant to lots of friends but after this horrible experience i won't go back to the restaurant again! So as my friends!

Yami Yami continues to impress, for such a small store the food it serves is certainly BIG in flavour šŸ˜ Chilli chicken, cheese chicken or even just a bibimbap will definitely make you completely full. Shout out to my fav dish: beef udon, love !

There are only a few restaurant in the local suburbs that taste authentic, this place has a good taste. I decided to try their bento box last week to see how it is, but the rice was too hard and the tofu was very greasy. Maybe the bento box is not their speciality as it is not traditional Korean. The other dishes here are alright though. One downside to this restaurant is that they never have kimchi:( it's always the sour cabbage kimchi they have

Very bad service, not allowed family come in with pram.<br/>Horrible test of food! A bit hard to find a nearby car spot.<br/>cash payment only!<br/>Try the bathroom behind their kitchen, horrible condition!

Been going to this place for almost 8 years now. The food has been consistently great there. Never had a bad meal or experience (the below negative reviews are a surprise to me). The staff are always welcoming. The LA Galbi and Chicken Karaage dishes are amazing. Get yourself a side of the dumpings (crispy and damn tasty) and you're good to go.

never in my life have i been so disappointed by a resturaunts service, we sat down and decided to get a plate to share as one each is WAY too much (from experience) with half of it going to waste, when we ordered we were told that its minimum one per person, we then tried to explain that we physically cannot eat one each and it would just go to waste, they did not care a single bit and were persistent on their so called "RULE" for one per person. How can a resturaunt tell a person how they should eat even after explaining how much of a waste of food + money it would be, and not take anything their customer says into consideration. In the end we both ended up leaving without purchasing anything and we didnt even get an APOLOGY, <br/>AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS, the service is disgusting, i will never understand how they can leave a customer so dissatisfied and not even apologise for their mistakes, this rule makes ZERO sense as it should be up to the person actually EATING the food to decide how bloody hungry they are and not throw $20 away like that. I hope this place loses all its points for providing the worst service i have ever received. <br/>By the looks of it, there are similar stories to mine, therefore it must be a COMMON PROBLEM!

Shit service, one menu for one person completely ignoring the fact that one plate can be shared between 2 people. I use to like this place but this had happened way too many times. When we left the owner didn't even try and stop us... Poorest customer service and just please don't go there.

Food was ordinary, but the service was appalling! I went there with a friend & her 4 years old daughter. We ordered 3 dishes. After about one hour, we were only half way through our dinner, a person who seemed to be the owner, pretty much told us that we need to finish eating soon as it's a small restaurant, when there were 2 empty tables & no one waiting outside! Don't bother, go somewhere else, there're plenty of better Korean restaurants in Melbourne!

The food not bad. It's nice actually. The portion a bit small for the price. Service not good. Not the waitress but the person who in charge. Me and my other 2 companion decided to order 2 dishes to share. He came up and said each of us must order at least one dish. He kinda hinting we not allowed to share. Okay, that's fine. So we add another dish with request to replace squid with prawn. We don't mind with extra charge. But he said No! <br/>It's winter, they gave us table near entry door. The place is small and not crowded, so we decided to move ourself to table next to us. Again he came to us and gave us a warning. We speechless and really annoyed. Even my daughter love the foods there, we decided will never go back again.

First time here! Small restaurant with less than 10 tables. Ordered the sukiyaki hot pot for 3. Portion was more like for 4! Must give top marks for the soup and the beef which was tender and juicy. The glass noodles were good except that it puffed up a little after sitting in the broth for a while so, if you don't like your glass noodles that way, scoop it up once the soup starts boiling. Service-wise, no complaints except that the wait staff was very eager to clear our hot pot for some reason (restaurant wasn't crowded). Would definitely come back to Yami Yami again to try other dishes!<br/><br/>Came back on 24/11/15 to try their sundubu jjigae, and it as fantastic. Loved the spiciness of the soup. Would have loved more seafood in it. Another good experience at Yami Yami!

Expensive Korean food // Poor service // Food isn't the best especially paying such a high price for it. Don't like spending too long in there as staff aren't friendly or welcoming either. Which affects the food experience there.

GO for the Bento Box for Lunch.<br/><br/>Lunch is always pleasant here, the Beef Bento Box, for around $12 comes complete with just about everything. If you don't like Beef, then there's Chicken or Pork to choose from.<br/><br/>The only downside is the small size of the restaurant, you can't have more than 6, then you need to turn up early, around 12:00 midday as the place is always popular everyday.<br/><br/>The other annoying thing is the smokes coming from the kitchen, nice smells, you just need to wash/dry clean your clothes and have a shower after.<br/><br/>Steam rice is always hot, served on a typical Stainless Steel bowl to match the Stainless Steel Chopstick (Korean trademark) and Hot Corn Tea is a great companion.<br/>Always enjoyable to come back though.

Food is nice, service is not good, well, not extremely bad either. waiter was a bit smug. Went there with my fam. Opened the door, the waiter straight away said" Ā "sorry Pram is not allowed" didn't even asked if it can be folded. We told him it can be folded, then only he allow us to come in. then I saw the waiter didn't allow other customer to sit (practically said" don't sit down " ) just because he wants to clean the table but with a rude gesture instead of friendly one.

I've been going to yami yami for years! Their dokbokki is absolutely amazing! I recommend getting all the add ons with that dish - the egg, ramen noodle! Their bulging is also really good, very flavoursome. They also do takeaway and it's super quick!

Never coming back again. Came up to us while eating and asked us if we could pay. As soon as they "closed" which was closed 20 minutes faster than the actual time it states. Food was horrendous. Expensive. Horrible experience and would never recommend anyone, not even someone who gave me aids and then proceeded to take a dump on my face. DO NOT ENTER. At all costs. Ever. Do yourself a favour and go get a large Big Mac meal instead. At least it they don't shoo you away at Maccas.

One of the worse possible restaurant in box hill! We went in just b4 8pm and was literally kicked out b4 930pm! They rushed us, half way thru our meal and told us to pay. Then said we can't pay with credit only cheque or saving or cash! If u have the ability to pay by cheque or saving why is it so difficult to do credit?? Never going back

One of the best korean, i love their LA gabi so much, have been their regular customer for almost a year now. Their soup is another one of my favourite dish, very good for winter, services are pretty good too! Highly recommended

Absolutely shocking behaviour from the owner. <br/><br/>Came in with a friend and asked for a table of 4 because 2 of my friends were running late and were going to join us a bit later. My friend was already hungry and wanted to get a head start and order first but the owner didn't let us order until everyone arrived because he didn't trust us about the fact that we had 2 other friends coming and thought that we were going to waste a 4 person table with only 2 people. Unbelievable. After 2 of my friends came, we all just left and went to another Korean place next door.

Poor customer service from owner. I've been to Yami Yami quite a few times before, but have always put up with the owner's bad attitude because I love some of their dishes there. Today when we arrived, there were no tables available except for one table, occupied by the owner while he's surfing on his tablet and having a drink. The waitress initially wanted to sit us at that table but the owner declined to give it up. We were askedto wait for another table. The owner finally relented after a few mins when other customers start arriving and a queue start forming. Food was good as always, but before we even finished all our food, the bill was plonked down in front of us in an obvious attempt to get us to pay up and leave. When we went to pay, we decided to try a card payment but unfortunately the payment couldn't go through as we weren't allowed the credit option and had to try savings. The next card worked as it allowed the savings option. The owner snidely insinuated that he had lost 50 cents due to the declined card, and implied we should cover that charge. Its a pity that the owner is such a rude man, as the food there is good and the waiters are so friendly and polite. Don't think I will be returning while he's there.

Rude employee !!!!!!!. The guy serving in box hill was horrible . i ordered a takeaway and sat on a vacant chair . he then told me to wait outside which they dont have any seats at all . out in the cold !!!! HORRIBLE SERVICE
Metamorphosis_g
Horrible place to go with young children. The food was just average but what is horrible was the staff who was ignorant and rude. We got told off for bringing a seaweed snack for our toddler. I explain that its to keep him occupied, to which his reply was "it doesn't make sense to bring outside food" It's not like we bought a whole McDonald happy meal in! Anyone with children would understand there's always a water bottle and some form of snack in a baby bag. Ridiculous place.

Ridiculous minimum order. We have dined out in many restaurants in Melbourne and never have had to place minimum order based on number of people. When we said our little daughter can't eat such lots of dishes, the waitress began to be rude to us and even didn't look at us. Finally we had to leave. Can you imagine that such restaurant can survive for another few years? Absolutely ridiculous!

I havenā€™t been to any Korean restaurants away from the CBD so I was interested to see how this one compared. The price was comparable to the city joints Iā€™ve visited so far, but the food was better than most. We ordered soondubu jjigae, spicy pork belly and squid and haemul jeongol for two (also available for three). All the dishes were tasty and satisfying with a nice and spicy kick from chilli powder. I also liked the slightly charred flavour in the osam bulgogi. It was quite a busy place with a high turnover. Oddly there were more people at 6:30pm than at 7pm and we had to wait for a table (only for less than 10 minutes). Perhaps everyone had the same idea as we did and were trying to come in early. DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
I have been to this place numerous times and have yet to experience any bad service (which seems to be the main complaint for most of the Urbanspoon reviews of this place) Maybe I just got lucky? Who knows? What I do know for certain is that the food here is delicious, and that I will definitely be returning.

I am guessing many people seldom venture down to this part of Box Hill which is away from the main shopping centre. The location is a small strip of shops in a quiet street facing the railway line, near the Station St pedestrian underpass. We found ourselves there very late on a Saturday afternoon, after doing some shopping. Standing facing these shops, we saw there were a couple of small eating places. Which one should we go to? On a whim, we went into Yami Yami.

Parking should be easy to find around the area; fees apply during the day. L.A. Galbi $15.00+ This is a grilled Korean dish that is made with marinated pork short ribs in a ganjang-based sauce (Korean soy sauce). When cooked on a griddle or grill, the meat is usually cut in thin slices across the bones and is called L.A. Galbi.

The bento box serving size is smaller than average. Ventilation in the shop is very poor. You smell like the food when you walk out. Taste of food is average. Didn't get any side dishes at all. Don't think will go back again.

Excellent service and food!. I've eaten at many Korean restaurants in Melbourne and Yami Yami is truly one of the best. Albeit small and somewhat lacking in ambiance it nonetheless offered a delightful dining experience. Being a vegan I can find it quite hard ordering at restaurants in accordance to my dietary requirements, but this was certainly not an issue at Yami Yami, not only did the waiter instantly recognise my friend I are vegans, he also recommended the best vegetarian dishes for us to order, a rare feat for any omnivorous restaurant. The wonderfully friendly staff, quick waiting time and the quality of the food make Yami Yami my new favourite Korean restaurant.

The King Advises a Trip to Yami Yami for Great Service and a Filling Meal!. Yami Yami is a great little restaurant that offers a quality menu and above average service for box hill. The waiting staff are fluent in English (A rare treat in Box Hill) and are very friendly. The teriayki and tonkatsu are by far the best I've had in Box Hill and they have great takes on some Japanese and Korean dishes. They have great prices even for box hill and I've always gone home satisfied. One downside however is the size of the restaurant which doesn't always guarantee you'll get a seat. They do not take bookings either so you'll have to get in early if you want to confirm a seating on Friday or Saturday nights.

Unbelievable worst service. Was there last night with my friends and ordered one of my favourite dishes, HOWEVER, the dish was way too salty and I made a complaint to them. Firstly the waiter apologises and told us he will not charge us for that dish, and asked me if I want another one so they can remake one for me. I didn't want my friend to wait for that long so I was like "it's ok, but just give me a plain rice." A few minutes later the owner walked in after smoking outside and said something to the waiter (wasn't a happy face). When I went to pay for the bill they still charged me for the dish, and the plain rice as well!!!!! I was really angry and didn't want to make anymore complaints because the owner pretended nothing happened. Not to mention I have been going there for years, and always recommending my friends there, but their customer service is so bad. I am strongly reconsidering going there for food again.<br/>P.S: when they are full , the owner will go to your table and start to clean up the table whilst you are still eating, and if you didn't "get what he means", a few mins later he will just leave your bill on your table just to tell you to get out because they want to let more people in. THE WORSE.
