Review Jantra Thai Restaurant - Braybrook

We ordered from here through uber eats and they left out one of our items. When we called they said we had to come get it. When we asked for a refund they said no, we had to go through uber eats. We went to pick up the rest of our order and they were not apologetic at all and instead just pointed to our food on the counter for us to take. They added two cans of cokes in the bag. We said there are three of us, they said they could only give us two cans. We again asked for a refund and they refused. Definitely disappointing how they handled it. The food was average so we won't be back.

Truly authentic Thai food as good as what I can find in my travels through Thailand in the 90s. It may take a while to find the place as it is not obvious. The place is nice, spacious and modern looking. A good spread of dishes and noodles in its menu. My order is massaman curry with chicken. Very flavourful and spicy the way I expect.

The worst fried rice I've EVER had. Overcooked and broken rice that was so mushy it was like a rice cake. Bland, no wok or fried texture at all. Tasted and looked like rice that had been cooked together with the overcooked veg in one saucepan or rice cooker. Hubby got the same dish a few months ago and ok, today abismal. Called them and complained. They offered to fix it but on a short lunch break, there's no time for that. I've tried their fish curries too and extremely salty and fish is very thickly battered, never had that with thai curries before. I wouldn't say it's very authentic at all. But that rice was shocking.

Awesome! Authentique original Thai taste by Thai chef with reasonable price. Amazing fresh and delicious ingredients. Friendly service and plenty of available car parking lot.

I am not sure how this place has anything over a 1 star rating. Maybe they’re still finding their feet after the lockdown - but sincerely the worst Thai food I’ve ever eaten. Oily green curry and watered down masaman.

The food was the best thai food I’ve tried definitely worth a visit!

Great food, easy parking for either eating in or taking away

I asked for spicy hot and they were indeed spicy. I ❤

My favourite place in the West for Thai. Delicious food, friendly service, and a fun little mid-century modern "living room" area to sit and wait for your takeaway. Highly recommended!

Extremely disappointed with our takeaway. They were not tasty at all. Doesn't taste anywhere Thai let alone authentic. I can cook better and so can you. Waste of money.

We went here on a family dinner. The restaurant was really empty and quiet when we went so staff were attentive. However the food wasn’t very good.

I have been to this restaurant a few time and my last visit was on a Sunday evening was a great disappointment.

High level - the standards have slipped and the dishes are now toned down from what they used to be.
It is expensive with better value for money restaurants around.

We went with a group of four, the restaurant was empty when we arrived and only got to about a quarter full.

We ordered two chicken pad thais, steam fish fillets served with stir-fried vegetables and ginger and also the soft shell crab topped with creamy coconut sauce.

It was about 15 mins from ordering when the waitress came back to say that they were out of softshell crab. Given the small menu I was surprised the waitress didn’t mention this in the first place.

It took another 10 minutes for her to take my new order. I enquired to what type of prawns they used in their dishes and the waitress said she didn’t know. Talk about not knowing your menu and I stress it is a small menu.

I ended up ordering the chicken stir-fry with roasted cashew nuts, dry chilly and seasonal vegetables.

The pad thais arrived first. And what can I saw, disappointment. There were the usual sides of peanuts, beansprouts and lime, however additional chilli flakes were missing. The noodles were nice however the tamarind sauce was lacking and the chicken was overcooked and tasted like it had been microwaved – yes it was dry and rubbery.

The steamed fish didn’t taste fresh, more like frozen.

The chicken stir-fry was underwhelming but surprisingly the best dish of the night. It definitely very toned down and watery. It didn’t have enough spice for it to be classed as even spicy.

The shiraz was supposed to be penfolds but tasted like cask wine vinegar..

For the price you are paying to go to this restaurant there are many more value for money options and even other better thai restaurants only 10 mins drive away in neighbouring suburbs.

How far this places has fallen.

Really dissapointing green curry, very watery. Coconut rice was good. Ordered pad see ew but it arrived with pad thai thin noodles not the thick rice noodle I was expecting. The flavour was average but the quality of ingredients was poor. I wont be coming back here.

Great food but the waiting time fo drinks and food in a restaurant where it is almost empty is inexcusable. 30 mins for a beer is a bit rich !!! Need to work on quicker service and we would be there once a week at least .

3.5. This restaurant is slightly hidden away, and although quite vacant on a weekday night, I was delighted to find that the food was generally excellent with authentic flavours, large portions and definitely deserving of a larger crowd. The fish cakes are full of flavour, grilled marinated chicken was very good, son-in-law eggs were hard-boiled (as they supposedly should be). Beef salad was a little bland, whilst the soft shell crab special was delicious in a tasty sauce of capsicum and carrots. The duck green curry was excellent (and huge!), the papaya salad was pretty good and the roti quite nice. Strangely, the weakest dish of the night was the pad thai which wasn't well marinaded in tamarind sauce and a little bland. Overall though, prompt service and delivery of food, and a great dinner with some very good dishes. Definitely recommend if you're in the area.

My family has takeaway from here regularly. Some of our favourites are Pad See Ew, Panang Curry, stir fried ginger, green curry and coconut rice. The Pad Kee Mow was way too spicy to share with our 2 year old, and menu log had no indication of hotness. We now use the paper menu so we know how spicy each dish is.

We have been here for a few years and only for lunch.

My review may not be very helpful as I've only ordered the same dish - the sweet and sour fish with rice. It's on their lunch menu.

It's not the best I've had, not the worst.
But I'm happy going back each time I feel like a quick lunch of sweet and sour, without parking hassles. It's more the convenience for me than the taste.

Staff friendly.

Being a local, I have been meaning to get to Jantra for a while. Finally I got to go here for dinner with family.

Jantra is kind of in an industrial area and near the railway line. When I pulled into the carpark I saw a wild rabbit hopping about. It did not hop off when I opened my car door.

We went and had an early dinner (~6pm) as we had very young people with us. Jantra was not busy at this time but as the night went on it got busier.

Service was friendly and with a smile, the place was clean and tidy but maybe in need of a bit of a spruce up inside.

We did not have to wait long for our entrees - spring rolls (vegie and chicken) and chicken satay skewers. The vegie spring rolls were enjoyed more than the chicken ones.

The chicken satay had plump pieces of chicken and were cooked very well. The chicken was very succulent. The peanut sauce was very acceptable.

Our mains came out pretty quick. For mains we had chicken fried rice, coconut rice, massaman curry, king prawn with mint salad, crispy soft shell crab, and a beef and vegetable stir fry.

The massaman curry seemed to be the favourite dish, the chicken fried rice was also great and the kids just loved the coconut rice. The soft shell crab could have been crispier, but it may have just been that I did not get to it quick enough before moisture got to it. The kids loved it.

Would I return? Yes.

Had driven passed so many times & only went here because Thai Angles was closed, so glad we did. Food was delicious, came out very quick & was good sized portions. Stand out dishes; son in law eggs & Pad Thai. Lovely service, will be back next time we crave Thai

I'm ashamed of myself that I didn't find this place soon enough!
Jantra provided a lovely dining experience.
We started off with chicken satay skewers, the satay sauce was lovely, the chicken however was quite overcooked and not as soft as saowanee in Niddrie.
We ordered the red chicken curry and massaman chicken curry, both very fragrant and tasty.
We ordered 2 steamed jasmine rice on the side and 1 on its own was actually a serving for 2 so good value right there.
We had apt of curry leftover as well so it was good to takeaway and bring home to eat the next day.
We also ordered some roti bread on the side, have had better, but would probably just get rice next time.
For the beverages, the $3 Thai milk tea was a bargain and it tasted perfect, not too sweet and not too strong in tea.
The $3 Thai lemon tea has an Asian tea taste, wouldn't order it again but it did make the experience refreshing.
Our orders were missed a couple of times but we're all human and it's normal to forget.
Would definitely return, staff were very friendly and attentive. Pricing is pretty decent compared to most Thai restaurants.
Take your lover, friends and family here for great Thai food.

Big mistake going here was a waste of money and time. The price was pretty decent but I would've much rather to pay extra money to have Good, quality , authentic Thai and this was NOT it. Was a decent wait for the food despite there was barely Anyone there.. As soon as my pad Thai came out I could straight away tell it was lacking flavour as it just looked like white plain noodles with no sauce/flavouring.. I was right it was bland and tasted awfffffulllll.... We also got the stir sweet basil stir fry fish that was very disappointing .. Needless to say this restaurant does not make authentic Thai whatsoever and it lacks ALOT of flavour. I also agree with the person who said the place had a weird smell... Will NOTTT be coming back bere again and do not recommend this to those craving Thai food - you can do better.

Was craving for some Thai food so my friend and I tried out this place. We ordered green curry and jasmine rice, satay chicken skewers and a coconut rice. The waitress was friendly and no problems with the service. The restaurant was very stuffy however, and there a faint smell.
The satay skewers came first and we got a generous amount of sauce and chicken. Sauce was very creamy and full of flavour, however the abundance of chicken surface and sauce quickly made us bored with the taste. The green chicken curry was also filled with a generous amount of chicken. The first spoonful was a surprise, but the more I dug in the better it got. The jasmine rice balanced the curry perfectly, as it was a bit more neutral compared to the sweet coconut rice. Overall the experience was nice, but it could've been better.

Substandard! Tasteless food (pad see ew, red curry) and expensive for the area. Waitress decided to tell me after I had already paid full price for my takeaway that next time i should ring up before coming to receive 15% discount. Funny because there won't be a next time. Hungry and so disappointed.

Got here at 6pm on a Wednesday, 1 hr after opening and I was the only one here. Ordered takeaway- pad thai, papaya salad, fried rice, curry puff and thai milk tea. Food didnt taste that great however prices were reasonable and staff were friendly. Pad thai was plain and soggy, needed more flavour. Papaya salad wasnt also that great, I've had way better elsewhere. Fried rice was okay. Thai milk tea also wasnt that great. The star is the curry puff- nicely cooked, soft yet crispy and yummy!

Very lovely service.
Our family of 17 dined in on a Saturday night, cos there was so many of us, we got to try heaps of dishes. My favourites were the Thai beef salad and duck massaman curry. Surprisingly, the taro dessert was really nice! The noodle dishes needed a bolder flavour.

New-ish restaurant hidden away in a business district in Maidstone. We had the chicken skewers with peanut sauce to share which were delicious! The peanut sauce especially was made really well. We then had the Pad Kee Mow and a Massaman curry with coconut rice. All the food was really nice, well made and well presented. They also had a fair range of wines as well, though only a handful were available by the glass.

Overall great experience, will definitely be back!

Awesome place tucked away in a business area that probably gets less attention than it deserves. Place has A+ staff that were always ready to assist; even the plates brought out were already warm. Place was empty at 7pm which seemed odd, although people arrived in due time. Food was great, decor was really fancy and welcoming, would definitely return.

A pleasant place to eat, but nothing more than an average suburban Thai. Everything is "OK" without being especially notable. Some dishes work better than others: the softshell crab was good, the coconut icecream almost tasteless...
Scrantic
Unassuming Thai restaurant hiding in commercial business park. Eaten here a couple of times now and a Red Curry and a couple of stir fry dishes. Food has always been delicious and service has been up to scratch.

Great food,clean , friendly.
Plenty of parking.

Great Thai!. We areived 7:30pm on a Friday evening for dinner. Being the first to arrive, we were hesitant to dine in as this is usually a peak time. We were soon put at ease with the friendly staff and cleanliness of the restuarant. Outstanding thai food and very reasonable prices. Looking forward to the next visit already.

I loved the green curry with chicken! Reminded me of the authentic flavours of Thailand. I will definetely come back just for the curry!!! :)

Good food and great service. Been to this place a couple of times and have enjoyed the food. Very friendly wait staff and great choice on the menu. Would recommend this place as its not too expensive for the fantastic taste and good service.

Fantastic! Fresh & delicious. Reasonably priced & friendly service. Definitely recommend

Jean Palmer. We are from NSW and this is the nicest, cleanest Thai restaurant and best Thai food we have ever had and we eat Thai a lot.

In this unassuming place, tucked away off the main road sits a literal diamond in the rough. You don't have to travel to Thailand to experience some of the best traditional thai food, it's right here in Melbourne! Every time I have visited its been top quality, consistent food and prompt service. If you love your Thai PLEASE try Jantra. The Tom Yum and Soft Shell Crab Salad is a must when visiting.

Lovely food..very clean premises. I popped in for lunch.
loads of car parks, very clean premises.
quick service, friendly waiter and quite a few people dining.
really good food and flavours!

Best Thai I have eaten in a long time. The vegetables are very fresh and not overcooked which is great. During the day out the window you can see two rabbits in the garden which was fun to observe - apparently they are regulars too.
Patrick
Great tasting food. Despite it's location it's a favourite for us.

Best Thai food in Footscray. We just moved to the area. We have ever passed this place 2-3 times, it looks very nice that we have seen from outside. Finally, we decided to get in. Visually, the inside was superb!!!, the service was exceptional, the staff was really lovely. We ordered Satay Chicken Skewers, Chicken in Pandan leaves, Green Chicken Curry and Crispy Fish in Curry. All food was very very fantastic!!! Curry is the best I have ever had... We will definitely be back.

Best Thai restaurant. Nice environment and service! The stir fried chicken with Tufu is yummm! It is nice marriage of chicken and tufu, tender chicken and fresh tufu with lemon grass stir fried rice are my favorite and highly recommended. PS: Reasonable price as well.

Wouldn't be rushing back We.... Wouldn't be rushing back
We went with a group of 8 and after the first 2 people ordered the waiter walked away and thought all orders were done. We had to ask him back to finish the order.
It then took 1 hour to start receiving our drinks, entrees which were spread out over 15 minutes of receiving them.
The chicken was under cooked in one of the dishes.
So an hour and a half after we ordered our mains we received them again the were all delivered over a 15 minute period so we didn't eat together again.

Most people said the rest of the food was ok but nothing special and we were all talking about a lot of other Thai restaurants which were heaps better.

To give them credit we had water on entry and gave us some free stuff because of all the problems we had.

Sorry not for me
Frank
Beautiful Beaf Salad. I tried their beaf salad last friday and it is beautiful. I love the taste of the beaf and especially when i mix the salad with rice, delicious!
I will come again for another beaf salad and try something else, cheers

A++++++. I usually go to caroline springs Thai but thought I would try somewhere different. My partner & I are obessed with this place, been there more than 3 times now! There panang chicken is delicous & there prawn rolls are beautiful & decent size too! And also if you are thinking of going, try there coconut ice cream, its to die for!!!
Vee
OK, but weird veg in dishes. Have been three time. Very yummy and authentic Pad Tai, curries, spring rolls, fish cakes. However I think due to produce available vegs included are sometimes not exactly authentic. Eg we had yellow squash in our green curry. The desserts were amazing and well worth squeezing in!

Having passed this local restaurant many times, my partner and I decided to give the place a go.

Upon entering we found the restaurant provided a nice atmosphere with nice table settings and calming voice of Whitney Houston's greatest hits.

While there was only one waiter, we found our service to be polite and quick. We were given water and menus as soon as we were seated, and had the opportunity to order soon after. The wait for food was relatively short but gave ample time to chit chat and converse.

We ordered the pad thai (a famous dish) and the chicken basil stir fry. The pad thai came out first and immediately we noticed how small the portion was. For a hefty 16 dollars, this small portion seemed like nothing I'm comparison to other local Thai restaurants. The pad thai was bland and flavourless, which was very disappointing. The chicken stir fry was an improvement but having to order rice separate from a fish which could obviously not be eaten alone was an annoyance.

In summary:
- the food was pricey in comparison to other local Thai places
- the portions were small and only semi-filling
- the food itself wasn't flavoursome and appetizing

And overall, not an extremely enjoyable dinner.

Fantastic meals! We had stir fried beef with basil & chicken panang. Kids had selection of entree's...spring rolls, chicken satay, calamari & wontons. SO GOOD! Every scrap of food gone and all totally full. Definitely be back again :)

Really genuine, authentic Thai food here. Great service, and very cheap for how good the food is. Curries are nice and spicy upon request, pretty ridiculous that this place is so quiet! Is a little hard to find, I reckon it'll catch on!
Adrian
I had the ginger chicken tonight and it was great choice. Tasted better than almost all other Thai places I have been to, and I have been to a lot of Thai places. Even the rice was great, I am usually picky with rice but this was perfect and I took my time to overeat. First time but definitely going back again. Love the location with heaps of parking. Adrian

The food is great! Usually I don't like curry but the curry here is very nice. Very friendly service too!

Very pleasant dinner out. We went with a booking for 10 on a Monday night and chose a combination of the vegetarian and omnivore banquets. Firstly I was impressed by the service - accommodating, attentive, pretty quick, very polite service... They worked around the two prams we had and there seemed to be plenty of room. The food was pleasant and tasty - comforting, inoffensive, lots of lovely creamy coconut dishes, without being overly wow or particularly spicy. Generous servings of the dishes, we had lots of left overs and didn't eat much rice. The lychee with coconut ice cream was a nice way to finish. Would be happy to go back and recommend it, especially for a group booking. But wouldn't go out of my way to seek this out.
MelbourneBites
Nice food, but the wait and staggered serving of meals means this place is best avoided by groups bigger than two.
H839593
Not content. The food was not great, way too pricey for average food. The only thing I really disliked was the wait for the food. Waited for 40 minutes for entree, and an hour for mains. Seemed like they only had one chef and felt like they just purchased the groceries after ordering and cooked everything from scratch - was not happy with that. The ambiance was nice though the place looked more like a cafe than a Thai restaurant. The soft shell crab came with fruit salad...? Roti was probably purchased from Safeway and heated up on a hotplate. Won't be coming back.
Chris
Great food!. I have been to this place a few times & each time I have found the service to be fantastic, the atmosphere great & the food is very, very yummy! Would recommend it thoroughly. I will definately be going back & bringing my friends. It is a hidden gem.
Jen
Great food and service. Really hope they sort out their liquor license. Little bit pricey but everything tasted great and the food came out nice and quick. Will definately go back :) kinda hope it stays not too busy!
Amanda Boyd
YUMMY!. Great prices, friendly service and above average fare. Was disappointed that they don't have a license yet, we were really looking forward to a Beer with our meal but we'll definitely be back and I imagine it will become a regular take away too.
Jne
Great local place to go too. Delicious food!
Daiz33
Excellent service. A bit of a wait for the food, but it was worth it! Delicious and flavorful food. I recommend the fish cakes, Thai curry and the lychee ice cream with coconut. A must try out place!
Temasek68
Everytime someone suggests a new Thai, I go in the hope that the restaurant delivers a whopping punch in the face with spice and chilli hits dialled up to 11. Jantra delivers a soft carress ... and sometimes a comforting touch is what you really need. Me? I want the total gut-stripping experience.
Vi
Nevermind, we were here for lunch, and lunch we judged.

Now Braybrook's getting in on the "secret restaraunt" action with a new Thai place tucked away in the business park behind Central West Plaza.
