Review Larousse Restaurant - Brighton le Sands

Radames Cintra
Very nice restaurant, it has a classic romantic vibe without being posh. Staff was really nice and friendly. The meal was really good and the chocolate mousse was fantastic. A meal for a couple would cost between 100 and 200 bucks. The wine menu is a bit restricted, but the restaurant is BYO and there is a liquor store just across the street. I recommend it and I'll be coming back for sure.

It's flavorusome. Portions were sufficient. Quiet restaurants. Good atmosphere. Delicious Brie Crumbs for cheese lover. Citrus lover would enjoy the Duck with Orange sacuce.

Used a Groupon voucher and the menu offered is very different to their publicised one. The food was OK for the money. 16 people dining, 14 had Groupon. Would have liked to have tried some of the other dishes.

This old school French restaurant is one of the best I've been too. Not only does the food have amazing strong flavours and aromas but the ambience of Larousse is unbelievable. Inside it might not be the most modern looking place but it sure feels like you in Paris, and a great homey feeling about it. The service is fantastic! If you are a seafood fan I strongly suggest the 'Seafood Vol au Vent Cardinal'. I would definitely go back!

Ordinary food and over priced. Only 3 tables filled, and no new comers, on a Saturday night in summer and in good weather is a clear statement. Veal lacked enough sauce to enjoy. Needed seasoning to give it life. With $33 a main I expect to bit of wow and a bit more French at least. The restaurant needs to listen to feedback from all customers to survive.

We went there for dinner and the food tasted excellent. For starter we had Camembert cheese was good. The main meal we had duck in grand manier and roast pork which was traditional and yummy taste wise. Finish of with a crepe suzzette. Awesome taste only needs some updating in the deco.

We had our Engagement Party here a few years ago with about 80 people and we booked the whole restaurant and wanted to go back for dinner. Last night we went with a Groupon voucher. There were only 6 people in the restaurant when we were told because we didn't make a booking they can't serve us. We had booked 2 weeks before through Groupon but we couldn't use the voucher on Saturday's and couldn't RE book through the Groupon site so we just went there as we had many times before. I asked to speak with the manager who was the chef. A nice fellow but only because I pushed him to serve us without a booking we would have been turned away. Bottom line you can tell there were new owners as it was sold a year ago. The previous owner was a lady and she was great. The attitude of the waitress was pathetic, food was tasteless or not as good as prior and I would never go back.

Last night Larousse was the venue for my birthday dinner. It was thoroughly enjoyable and definately a night to remember. Definately will be back again to introduce more people to this lovely restaurant. Staff are lovely especially Aldo. Very accommodating. Everyone had a blast! Thanks again!!

Underwhelming experience ,food was home cooked quality at best and lacking the anticipated flavours .Service was slow and staff did not deliver a good customer experience. In addition they had run out of duck!!!!
A shame as the restaurant is well established but as per other reviews it has become tired, which is a shame as the atmosphere is very pleasant.
Disappointed

This was probably the worst experience I have had in sydney. When hogs breath would do a better job of a steak you know things are wrong. I couldnt believe how terribly inedible the food was, the local oub cooks an $8 piece of meat to a better quality. Im usually not one to complain however i felt like i was eating a bistro meal is a country town with 5 people.

Avoid

Opened in 1977? This French restaurant is keeping itself very original, the lights, the decor, the paintings, even has a wooden front door. The food was so so, the garlic bread was crispy And fresh, main was pretty good ( I had the chicken), crepe Suzette was way too sweet. Price was great, $30 for a proper dine in 2 course meal (Monday to Thursday) not too bad I guess

Really delicious risotto, cute atmosphere. A bit overpriced for the quantity and quality. Again, not much of a variety when It comes to vegetarian options

the food is relatively okie !! average !! the service is rude and not at all charming !! the place overall for French food lovers is not recommended at all !! we felt like we were rushed to finish our dinner and leave ! there are better French places to eat than THIS PLACE !! will never see this place again !!
rubbish !!
Not what it used to be.

Larousse was taken over by Indian owners a few years ago who have run it into the ground. Staff are rude and hostile, the food is average. The only saving grace is the $29.50 weekday special which makes it acceptable for the price. Expect to be treated like dirt when ordering off the "cheap menu" though!

If you want a blast from the past this is the place to go. No much has changed since the 1980's except the prices. We had the two course special for $29 which was reasonable for the price. Staff attentive and friendly. Unfortunately the special menu would not enticed to try anything from the main menu! Corkage is $5 per bottle and with a bottle shop across the road mean it is easier to pop out and buy a bottle then order from the wine list?
Larousse French restaurant. We went deeply and sincerely to look in to the issues rased above but we're unable to find any basis or logic in it .Majority of our valued and sophisticated customers have consistently and regularly appreciated our food and service available at most reasonable prizes .They always to eat to their brim and satisfaction .We have highly trained staff and experienced staff who very well know the taste of our customers .We agree that every individual has his or her on taste ,likes and dislikes .We invite to you kindly revisit our restaurant soon to enable us to find the basis ,if any of your grouse .
Thanking you
Ruby

Seemed like a well established restaurant, so passing by I thought it deserved a visit. When you think of 'French Cuisine' the first thing that comes to mind is finesse, presentation and perfect portions (and butter aplenty of course). It was dissappointing as the delivery was the exact opposite. Clearly everything on each plate has been pre-prepared, apart from perhaps the meat for the mains. Our salads suffered from 'fridge burn' and had absorbed that mild over packed fridge odour. The entrees where excessively larger than mains at other French Restaurants, and the several mushroom sauces which were described differently on the menu where clearly from the same bain marie with a slightly different garnished. (Unlucky for some who end up with a second course almost identical to their first). Staff overall happy but lack real experience. Prices are immaterially less than that at the top end of town so your money is much better spent their instead.

Wonderful Experience Great Food And Great Service. Yesterday evening i and my husband were strolling on the road on our way to some restaurant to have evening food .We were wating for the traffic lights to go green Suddenly my glace fell on Larousse restaurant serving french cuisine and decided to have french food in the cold night which is more warming .It is $29.50 two course meal appealed me much .Me and my husband consented went in to a restaurant were we cecked ala carte menu which appealed us more .We ordered this menu and i enjoyed snails and duck my husband having calamari and lobster and brulle and crepes in desserts .
We were highly impresseed the waitress and visibly of indian origin of us was of a slightly heavy build . But her agility astonished us highly .She was ever ready to serve us quickly ..She provides us a homely atmosphere high privacy .We felt like being in a home away from our own home .Food and service were highly hyginic and fresh .The personality of the waitress an indelible mark on us .We became their permanent customers .I recommended everbody to atleast have food over their and test the veracity of my review .

Terrible. This restaurant has gone downhill since the change of owners. Food is overpriced and lacking the quality it once had.

Terrible!. I was so excited when I booked this restaurant for my Dad's birthday. He used to visit this restaurant (and love it) about 5-10 years ago.

What a dissapointment!!! Change of owner since the great experience we used to have at this restaurant & there is now nothing French about Larousse. Staff were not very friendly and watched us from behind the counter while we ate, making my grandmother feel very uncomfotable.

Would not recommend and would never return!

Our family have been dining at this restaurant for decades. We went tonight for a family member's significant birthday and were really disappointed. The staff were pleasant enough but the standard of food has dropped significantly. Two ordered the seafood vol au vent and one came without the vol au vent! The salt & pepper calamari was tough. Three of us ordered steaks which were good. The staff and owner started to take notice once we started checking reviews on Urbanspoon on our mobile phones and discussing them. They attempted to try and redeem themselves even bring a complimentary Birthday dessert. It's such a shame as it was once a great little French restaurant. We won't be going back.
Let Them Eat Cake
Sorry, but I didn't want to write this review but I feel I have to say we were more than disappointed. There were so many things that were just not right.
The unhappy owners??, the food, (the prepackaged pastry, calamari and more) the wine list (lack of champagne, which was no longer available as they were are replacing the previous list but no substitute offered), no ambiance, weak coffee.... I can't go on. I wish you luck.

AMAZING AMAZING. Me and my husband dined here on the 13th of feb just before valentines day, and can i say WOW!
food- amazing, each spoon full was immaculate
staff- beautiful service, we were served by a wonderful blonde Australian girl who was presented well and very funny! fluent english (which is always a plus)
DEFINATELY RETURNING!

Great Fillet Steak. Visited in Saturday 15th Feb and overall the experience was good.
We both had a fillet steak, very nice. Although the difference between my medium steak and her rare steak was not evident. The rare option was a little over done. Fans in the restaurant were intrusive and despite requests to adjust fans - nothing happened. BYO option is good.

We shared a Creme Brulee - first class!

I'd recommend this restaurant and I would go again.

Terrible!! Never written a review before, but experience has driven me to it!!! Service / Hospitality minus 12 out of 10, food "nil point", pre-prepared, cold, duck better suited for shoe repairs than eating...& not cheap!!! much better food available at any RSL

Do NOT go to this Restaurant if You want Service & Respect. My husband & I used to eat in this restaurant .... we love it and we enjoyed the SERVICE especially the owner.

It is Valentine's Day & my husband booked this restaurant hoping it is the same owner ... Unfortunately, there is a change of owner .....

When we go out, it is not just the food BUT THE EXPERIENCE COUNTS .... in my entire life in Australia (I am a migrant from Asia), I experienced on Valentines's Day the most horrifying service .... and for the record, it was the WIFE of the owner who has no idea of treating a customer ....

She had an argument with a couple who booked and she was claiming that they did not ... and to think, they asked for a $20.00 deposit. It was obviously a mistake on her part but she refused to admit and continously argued with the client ... offering them $40 just to go away ... good thing the client fought back which is the right thing to do

The worst part was the fact I was talking to one of the girls serving (who was very good in her job), the same girl (the WIFE of the owner), just butted in asking me .... "Are you talking about me?" ..... I guess, she was guilty in doing the wrong thing with the customer and I witnessed it all ....she was a total disaster .... I wanted to create a scene but I am not going to go down to her level which is obviously ... never mine

We used to love this restaurant ..... unfortunately, the CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP is not helping to make it as a good restaurant.

Sad to see a previously very good restaurant going to the bin because of MIS-MANAGEMENT and NOT KNOWING HOW TO TREAT CLIENTS RIGHT ....

WHEN WE GO TO A RESTAURANT ... IT IS NOT JUST THE FOOD .... IT IS THE EXPERIENCE THAT COUNTS ....

C'est magnifique. Great food, great service, generous servings. This is not modern fancy French, more rustic and traditional. Have never left hungry or unhappy.
Highly recommended

Good grub. Just moved to the area. Was actually walking to Coles when I stopped to look at the menu and decided to go in. The staff were friendly and helpful for a first time diner not familiar with French food. I had the pate and splurged to get the lobster for main. Both great and price ok for the good quality. I've booked another table for next week with friends and can see thus being a regular restaurant for me

A little old fashioned, but I loved it. I think this place has been around for many years, just had my first visit. It was quite busy and a slight bit noisy, but still ok for us as the atmosphere was good. It was the best meal I have had in a very long time, scallops to start, trout for main & cheesecake for dessert. All were so very tasty.
The 3 other diners with me could not fault the food or service either .
Can't wait to return

Went there on a Friday night. Apparantly they changed owners over a year ago. Food was average for the price. Little Snail is roughly the same price but better food.
Only two waiters running the floors. Seemed like they couldnt handle the rush. Waiters were very helpful though

Larousse excellence. I couldn't fault this restaurant on any level! The food and wine service was excellent - the ambience superb - the food was simply exquisite. This was our first time dining here and we will definitely be back for more even though it is far from where we live (45 minutes), it is worth the trip again and again! Fantastic.

This place is fantastic for traditional French food, I had the escargot for entree, duck with orange sauce for main and profiteroles for dessert and they are all awesome! My bf had the prawn&scallop in puff pastry for entree which was fantastic too! However, he did not like the veal as it was the meat was overlooked and tough. Would recommend this place for French food as the price was also reasonable compare to some other fine dining French around the city. Do try the duck with orange sauce!

Very impressed. This restaurant is great for both a quiet dinner for 2 and larger groups. The staff are very friendly and the service is spot on. The food is very good and the portion sizes are just right. We had the two course specials menu for $35 pp which is great value and it includes garlic bread. We will definitely be back.

Bon Appetit. Good food and great atmosphere . Mick and Nat where the convivial hosts . Great french food considering the Anglo/ Middle Eastern background of the new owners .Vive Le difference !!

Had a lovely Friday night date with the hubby here. Service was fantastic, very attentive but not annoying at all. The wait staff go out of their way to accommodate you. Decor is quaint and very French. Was slightly concerned that the food would be too rich but was just divine - had the pork calvados and couldn't fault it! Husband also really enjoyed his fillet mignon. Crepe suzette was nice and fluffy. Will most definitely return.

Bad steak. One of the worst steak I've ever had. Ordered a daily special beef and reef, asked for rare, it came out very well done, bearly chewable, the owner was very friendly initially, keep asking how was the meal. But when I told him it was over cooked, he said he'll talk to the chef and dissappeared, never came back.

I expect goose liver in a French restaurant, but they uses chicken liver, $19 for a spoonful liver, taste similar to Cole's Don $1.7's chicken liver tube.

Food is delicious & owner is absolutely lovely!

Ambiance 8.5 service 9.5 food 10 I would say this was one of the best French restaurants I have been too in Sydney, Brendan owner/chef made it that more personal by coming to the table and having a chat also offering a comp desert wine would definitely make this a place to take visitors

I took a friend couple and had a great time a shame the food didnt put up, my vol au vent was bought at Coles on the corner.

Good value, simple traditional French food with excellent service!

C'est Magnifique. Recently we have been concentrating on eating very, very healthy food. Lots of grilled seafood, salads and Japanese.
Tonight we were staying at Brighton-Le-Sands for a conference and I consulted Urbanspoon for a good restaurant within walking distance.
The good experience started when I booked the table. Brendan introduced himself as the owner and explained their policy of encouraging patrons to bring their own wine if it will enhance their dining experience. They only charge $3 per bottle (not per person). Their own wine list is good, with a couple of well-priced French wines available.
When we arrived, the excellent staff were 'on the ball' and things went very smoothly from then on. We had the scallop and prawn Vol-au-Vent, Pork Fillet and Lamb Rack. These were all superb.
Brendan introduced himself and was interested in our comments. His story of buying the restaurant is very interesting.
We were looking forward to the cheese plate, hoping for a runny French brie. There were Danish, Australian and other cheeses available, but no French. Perhaps next time.
The ambiance was very good. The waiters were all waistcoated and very well trained. The tables were intimate and laid with white linen.
After our stretch of 'healthy' food it was wonderful to give ourselves over to an excellent and delicious dining experience.
I highly recommend Larousse Restaurant.
