Review Humble House - Brighton

Elizabeth Crozier
Great Chinese restaurant in Bayside. I come here with colleagues, friends and family. The dishes are absolutely delicious and water is always topped up. Attentive staff and service. I am always greeted or spoken to by my name. My family and I used to go to another Chinese restaurant for decades but now we much prefer going to Humble House

If Google allows to give 10 stars I will rate them all. They do really lovely food and wonderful service. Highly recommend the wasabi prawns. Can’t complain anything!!! Definitely come back more often

Really enjoyed finding this place! Good food, nice atmosphere, great service! Would definitely come again. It even impressed my Chinese dad, which says something. He also added that the banana fritter was the best he'd ever tasted!

I came to Humble House for my birthday as booked by my father. They get 5 stars not just for the delicious and fresh Chinese food (which we ate as takeaway when my father got sick) but for the caring and patient way they handled my father’s very sudden vertigo attack. They helped box up our food, provided sick bags and calmly let us stay at our table as long as we needed before we could move Dad. It’s really rare in a busy restaurant, especially Bayside. We will gladly come again for the banquet.

Brilliant food and Brilliant service. Excellent value for money. Great entrees, and mains are just as good. Probably my 4th visit and I haven't found a bad meal. A must dine-in if in the area.

Terrific local and authentic Chinese restaurant. Warm and attentive service, the food is fresh, beautifully cooked and delicious. Can’t go wrong here ! Recommended

Service and food are impeccable. Edmond is a wizard with a cocktail shaker. Jackie is a fantastic host. Must try dishes are trumpet mushrooms with pork and the Champagne honey chicken is the best I've had.
Rob Jack
Terrific service in what is a wonderfully suburban Chinese restaurant. Food is reminiscent of Chinese from the 1980s and tasty and delicious. Service really is the standout. Quick and nothing is too much trouble. Very inexpensive wine by the glass is a bonus. Definitely worth a stop every now and then.

We ordered take away so maybe that's why the food wasn't anything like the positive reviews that have been left for this restaurant in general.
Out of the 7 items we ordered only two were good including the beef and black bean plus the homemade dim sims. Apart from that, the steamed rice was stodgy and overcooked; the prawns in garlic sauce were in a glutinous goo that tasted overpoweringly of uncooked garlic with 50% onion; the honey chicken was in a soggy, greasy batter containing very little chicken and the deep fried calamari was again smothered in soggy, greasy batter.
Overall a very unappetising and very disappointing meal.

Walked past this place and it was packed so decided to go in and check it out

We had to wait 2 mins which wasn’t an issue
The food looked and smelled amazing

We ordered the special fried rice and the Chicken and cashew dish

Both were amazing

The rice had a lot of veg and a lot of shrimp
Chicken was nicely cooked

Wine list had a lot of variety, will be back

This place is a long-time Brighton staple and ever-reliable. We love the window banquette which gives great Church Street scenery and is very cosy in the evening. We went with another couple and just had a few dishes and they are very large so you won't leave hungry... or be hungry and hour later :) Our waiter, Joe, was excellent and friendly and attentive and we can't wait to return. It's also BYO with a nominal corkage fee which is attractive.

The Wasabi Prawn is amazing!!! My favorite not as an appetizer but as main dish!! The honey chicken and jasmine tea is delicious too! I highly recommend this place, to seat or take away :)

Real nice Chinese vibe and showing the real Chinese value through dining experience! Polite, warm and humble. Even just myself 1 person come to lunch, they give the high standard of catering.

Love everything here . Have lived in Brighton for over Four years and finally had dinner here
I seriously cannot believe I hadn’t been earlier. I really cannot fault a single thing at Humble house. The fish dish I ordered ( baby snapper) is now my favourite dish bayside .
The Lobster San Choy Bao and the duck pancakes were just perfect too. Look forward to trying other things on the menu

Always can rely on humble house for some affordable great tasting Chinese food. Good local place if you're feeling a cheap and cheerful night.

The food at Humble House is amazing! It's not cheap but it's superb. The best in Bayside when it comes to Chinese cuisine. The Kung Po Chicken is out of this world. The service is impeccable even when the place is booked out (like it was when I had dinner there on Tuesday this week). If you want an entree do not go past the duck crepes. Delicious with a tasty sauce. Oh it's heaven and you'll find it in Church Street, just opposite the Cinema.

Friendly staff, delicious food and comfortable place. It is quite different from normal Chinese restaurants. Elegant atmosphere. Just walked down the street and found this restaurant. Happy coincidence!
Sourjunky
Average food but I applaud for the good service. The food here is mainly catered for Aussie so not much authenticity. Having said that, it's not totally a disaster either. Priced for Brighton suburb, get the hint?

Delicious food and professional service. Our family has been coming here for years and have had many special celebrations here. The best calamari I've ever tasted!
Yol
Best takeaway Chinese food in the area. Always consistent and reliable. We stick to the popular sweet and sour pork, sichuan beef and lemon chicken. All pretty heavy and oily but that’s what you expect with these dishes!
Lightworker Trinh
Very busy chinese restaurant. Waiters were very attentive and friendly. Vegetable hot and sour soup, vegetable stir fry was lovely. My partner enjoyed his duck soup and duck parcels which was quite filling.

Absoloutly underwhelming place, very average food and ambience, over priced. I had a high expectation of the place but dissappointed. Not recomended.

My family have been dining and getting takeaway from Humble House since it first opened. Delicious food always a warm and friendly welcome. I love the vegetarian spring rolls and the chicken teriyaki. Looking forward to many more family occasions at Humble House.
This place is ok. Not good. Not bad. The price tag is not worth it. The tables are way too close together so you are literally eating on top of each other. The staff also have a really bad habit of making it very obvious they are serving their regular customers first. Not a great way to make an impression on new customers. Overall not worth a visit again.

The food is absolutely superb here. The service can be a tad on the cold side, however their fresh ingredients and tasty dishes are still worth the visit to this place.

Excellent service, good quality produce and yummy food, plus it's BYO. Been here a few times and never disappoints. The duck pancakes are amazing!

Average food. They classify their food as Asian, not Thai, not Chinese, not Indian etc., just Asian. Ordered Tom Yum Prawn and got chicken instead. They brought a new one, no problem. Soup very sweet though. Nothing remarkable about the cuisine and not worth the $$.

My wife and I have been to this restaurant a few times in the past 12 months. This evening I placed a phone order for take away and advised this would be 25 minutes (no problem).
I arrive to collect the order at the advised time, paid the bill as requested ....... and was told to wait out on the street my order would be brought to me.
Never again Humble House, either tell me the order will be ready in 10 mins and to come back but don't take my money and then tell
me to wait outside.
VERY disappointed
Awesome. I am up in Brighton for holidays and i am very pleased to find this Authentic chinese resturante.
I eat asian cusine all over melbourne and i loved it here :)
Steve
So disappointing. The food is bland, bland, bland. What they call XO sauce is nothing like it should be. Kung Po chicken? No heat. No complexity. Everything tasted the same. Every dish had same gloopy slightly sweet sauce.

On the plus side, the service was good (especially on a busy Saturday night). And base ingredients (meat, fish, etc.) were all good quality. But the cooking was just so boring. And the prices were very ambitious.

Wouldn't go again.
Richard
Popped into this place for lunch on a whim the other day. The room is Chinese restaurant 101......dark interior, heavy carpet, ornate decorations and tables all lined up to within an inch.

The menu reads exactly like any other of the 1000 Cantonese style eateries in Melbourne - san choy bau, black bean sauces, steamed fish etc etc. Nothing I saw that would surprise you. Where it does differ from many Chinese restaurants is in the prices it charges - a lot of the main courses nudging toward $35.

The food is bang on middle of the road ordinary. I suspect this place has been here for a while and the menu hasn't changed since it opened. This is production line Chinese food. Thick, sweet sauces, over cooked meat and seafood, stodgy san choy bau, limp vegetables. We left the fish, it was like rubber and we hurried through the rest of the meal so we could pay the bill and get out.

I don't eat Cantonese style much, I think it is one of the hardest cuisines to find done well and in my experience the only really good Cantonese food in Melbourne is in Chinatown. This place is an example of what many places in Melbourne dish up unfortunately.
Rickallen70
Disappointed. Ordered some take away last night - Sweet an Sour pork and Crispy beef strips with mandarin sauce. The pork was grey coloured and tough and the beef strips were tough and chewy and inedible. What a shame.
Tessm
We went to humble house and had the mandarin banquet. It was delicious!! The food came out piping hot Abd had lots if flavour. Duck soup was unlike what I had eaten before and the San Choy bau and suck pancake were fabulous. Beef and prawns very tasty and the Banaba fritter a lovely way to end the meal. Walked away with a full belly and a smile!

Expensive and ordinary. Popped in for a quick pre movie meal
Decor a nd service was good but the Schezuan Beef at 24.50 was tastless and the beef over softened with Bicarb i think to make a poor cut ltaste tender .
We sent it back half full and asked for satay skewers to replace it as we were then pressed for time .
It took 15 mins and out came one skewer each (yes thats right one each!!!!!
The rice was over powered with egg but ok so we ate that and a satay stick each .
When we went to pay they had the cheek to charge for the beef (which was sent back with their approval)
Cant believe people were coming in by the droves .
Waiter was lovely
Humble house you need to lift your game and lower the prices
NEVER AGAIN back to our ol faithful
Bayside Epicurean
Modest yet mediocre. There is little to like about this place. in the many times I've been here with colleagues, the food has been uninspired, bland and overcooked. The Brighton-AUD exchange rate doesn't help justify the disappointing food here. The atmosphere is moody and somewhat cramped. The service is brusque, as might be expected from many Chinese restaurants. I recommend giving it a miss.
Darren
Consistently Excellent. We have always found Humble House to be an excellent Chinese restaurant - the service is very friendly and efficient, but most of all the food is fantastic and bottles of fine are priced reasonably. There is something about this place that makes it feel very different to your average local suburban Chinese restaurant. That this restaurant is always full shows we are not the only customers who think the same.

We generally order a banquet, which are excellent value; there are a number to choose from - the portion sizes are generous and the flavours of each course perfect.

Excellent value for money.
Joliverbrand
HUMBLE HOUSE FAILS. I ordered braised pork ribs but was given tiny crumbed pork chops, possibly fried, and with barbecue sauce added later. They were stale and tough, and had not been marinated and/or slow-cooked as a braise should be.

When I politely pointed this out, the manager shrugged it off and went on busily attended to the many other customers.

Very disappointed.
Hungryhippo
A nice evening out. My expectations from a restaurant are wait staff to understand my order, serve my food in a timely manner, the food to be fresh and tasty, good size servings, my table cleared when I've finished and the dining experience to be pleasant for all involved. I can say my family all had happy, full tummies and were looked after well by staff. The reviews for this restaurant were consistently positive which I took on board and wasn't disappointed. Would definitely go back again.

Takeaway dinner. Great takeaway menu and food. Try something different each time and always been happy.

Well done my friends..very consistent. As a somewhat semi-regular to this Church St staple, the folks at Humble House deliver well on many dishes and particularly noting the outstanding Red Duck Curry, it's a winner. Spring rolls are very nice as well. Good value proposition, they are friendly and hospitable. Loving the BYO option as well it is a genuine 'solid place' to visit for both a dinner out or as a takeaway option. Well played indeed.
Liz
This is our regular post-movie restaurant. Exceptional service, great food delivered quickly. A little on the pricey side, but BYO helps. About $70 for 2 with 2 mains and rice- no entrees.
Mkmike
The best Asian. Best chinese food i had in the Bayside area. Will go again and again. Love the top stairs dining private area.
Jezstone
Up there with Lau's Family in St Kilda for great Chinese. We had Mongolian Beef, Rainbow Duck special, Prawn Egg White special , Scezuan Eggplant and Chinese mushrooms. All just perfect. No complaints at all
Louise
Guilty Pleasure. As this restaurant is located adjacent to the Palace Cinemas, it was a natural choice for dinner before our movie. We ordered the $60 per head Humble Banquet. Each of the courses were too tasty for their ingredients, for my liking. And with that, three letters sprang to mind...MSG. Not forgetting what must be liberal doses of food colouring. It was off putting, the vibrant green colour on the Wasabi Prawns. Similarly, the Eye Fillet, was too blatantly visually enhanced. The service was super efficient and our courses were timed well. Might re-visit... if options are limited prior to a movie.

Humble house was a loverly experience. The food was wonderful esp the wasabi prawns. The staff are very friendly and attentive 10/10 for service and 10/10 for the food. Xoxo

ALWAYS GOOD. We have been coming here for many years and the service is always outstanding with the food being consistently good ! Being B.Y.O is also a plus. There banquets are very good value ! We will be back.
Tell It Like It Is Of Brighton
Had a Father's Day banquet . The quality of food was very good, so was the service. The only fault was the soup was way too hot which burnt your mouth. Duck soup was also very salty which took away the flavour of the duck. Overall an enjoyable meal will come back!
Yum In My Tum
Very average. Dinner with a friend. Veg spring rolls tasteless. San copy bau chicken was yum. Cashew chicken and black bean beef too full of MSG. Average. Would not rush back.
Madeleine
The best wasabi prawns
Luvfood
Great food and great service. Been here many times and never disappointed. Try our favorites - wasabi prawns, baked crab shell, calamari and trumpet mushrooms! Delish!

A Happy Humble House. This place is around the corner from my work, so I head there fairly often. Mostly I just get Tom Yum and/or san choy bao, both really yum dishes at reasonable prices.
The staff are always smiling and friendly and food is prepared super quick.
Would like to go here for dinner one time to try some more dishes!
Elwood Diner
Bland and overpriced. We had dinner here last night - and will not be back. Firstly acknowledge that that the service was very good, however let down by the food. Just really bland, unmemorable dishes. The kids had "satay" chicken however the peanut sauce was virtually inedible. It tasted very much like it a cheap commercial product, (a bad one at that). Our dishes were passable at best. Just really bland and lacking in real flavour in the sauce. Even the rice was dry and floury and in tiny servings. There is plenty of good Cantonese around in Melbourne to waste over $100 here for a quick meal, to justify returning.
Snarky Miss
9/10 would go again. The f.... 9/10 would go again.
The food here is absolutely divine! Went in a large party and ordered the oriental banquet, everything was absolutely perfect.
Our waitress was rather stern and distracted from the otherwise friendly, family-oriented yet intimate atmosphere. Overall, very good!

Best Chinese you can have. We dropped down to the humble house earlier today with no booking, the place was pumping. The manager noticed that we were stressing about finding a table so he suggested a table upstairs and lucky he did.
We started with their signature wasabi prawns that was wow we even asked for seconds of that dish, for mains we had the shredded mandarin beef and lemon chicken both dishes were sensational.
Will be back there any day,
Well done guys.

Early sitting for New Year's Eve and it was pretty busy. Service was prompt, polite and efficient. Normally on New Year's Eve you don't expect too much but Humble House didn't disappoint. The food was was tasty and very enjoyable. We were a party of 8 and all were pleased. Would probably go there again if I was on that side of town.
Tracey Rubin
We like Humble House. The food is consistently good. Pity about the service as it is consistently bad. But they make a mean daiquiri & you can BYO! Always busy, so I don't feel obvious dining with 2 children. Expensive for Chinese but worth it every once in a while.
Hazel
Bland! Very dissappointing - it always looks busy so we eventually got a take away - it was so bland! Lots of meat though. We prefer the new restaurant "Flamire" opposite the Brighton yatch club.

Thanks a million. Thanks to Jackie and the gang for taking on 22 of us today (Sunday 9th) for our Xmas get together and Krisskringle. Not only did you cater to our every whim upstairs you had a party of 40 downstairs! Don't think we've had that before but you took it in your stride. It is no wonder that we each individually, as couples, visit you often throughout the year.
We had a wonderful time and the food was superb. Many thanks Rachael (?) for running her socks off to look after us all. We had the best time (and have to also thank our friends Marsy and Christine for organising it). Will continue to come here for the great atmosphere and food.Sorry we hadn't gone by 4, but thanks for you patience!
Lesley
Traditional Chinese!!. The place is good for your old fashion traditional chinese fix but you can get this at any chinese restaurant. Nothing special and the flavours were a bit bland. However the staff were very accomodating and friendly..
Greendoggiebag
A neighborhood Chinese restaurant. My work mate took me here as this restaurant has been acclaimed as one of the bests in Brighton. I don't believe it. This place might pass as a family go-to Chinese fix, but not as good as to expect much out of. The taste was bland for pretty much all dishes.
Chrissie M
Humble. Beautiful restaurant, with amazing food! Our family goes there for formal events such as birthdays because it is a tad pricey. I always get the shredded beef in mandarin sauce, and it is beautiful! Don't forget the banana fritters for desert!
FoodTalkie
Overpriced overadventurous blandness. What strikes you first is the inexperienced staff, and the next thing that you notice are how many empty seats there are. This is Understandable why. We had the banquet meal where it failed on delivery on both taste and presentation. Forget this place like everyone else has until they start to taste and improve on their own food.
Gina Pugman
Delightful as always!. A very enjoyable dining experience! The food is delicious and the staff are friendly. A little pricey but I highly recommend it to try!
Hungry Princess
Humble Find. Had a variety of dishes - some turned out well, some turned out a bit disastrous.

The noodles and san bao choi (which is a lettuce leaf filled with mince) were great. The wasabi prawns were a little too saucy but fresh and crunchy if you took off the sauce. It was interesting to have the wasabi flavour without the chilli taste.

The food was fresh, not too oily and tasty. They also have a great lunch special i will go back to try - with entree main and drinks for about $22 per person.
Quality Over Quantity
Slightly disappointing. Take away order of Beef in mandarin sauce, red duck curry and bbq pork chow mien. The beef was quite nice and very well cooked. The duck curry was delicious but overcooked and therefore tough and the chow mien was a big let down. Overall it was nice but, as it currently stands, there are better Asian restaurants in the area. Also the fried rice was very expensive.
J
Splendid. This restaurant has the best entrees. I keep coming back for the delicious wasabi prawns and the escargots, you just can't get enough.

There's lots of asian varieties in the main selection and the best thing is, the wine selection has equal amount of choices, and value for money! It's hard to find such a delicate restaurant in Brighton at this price range.

Thumbs up and would def recommend !!!
Stephanie Gaddin
Excellent authentic Asian food. Thai green curry and shredded beef with mandarin sauce are brilliant. Let the waiters recommend the signature dishes, they know what they are talking about
Dangerous Dave
Humble and Helpful. This restaurant serves beautiful Asian cuisine and offers many delicious dishes. The staff are wonderful and you can B.Y.O. This is my favorite place to eat, and, take it from me, once you eat here, you won't want to leave.

My perfect meal here would be
Wasabi prawns with
Beef Massaman and
Deep fried ice cream
Frequent Foodie
Great but slow. This was a great, typical chinese night out. Lovely Chinese dishes, great friendly staff and family dining at the table next door. BYO to boot. Just a tad slow on getting the dishes out but I'd easily go again.
James Thornton
Great food and always welcoming staff. Plenty of food with each order and decent wine avaliable.

Despite the odd circumstances which brought us together, Humble House actually turned out to be quite a suitable venue. The service was attentive, accommodating and also very perceptive. The menu here features traditional dishes, and the tastes are familiar and comforting. We shared some light and crisp san choi bao’s, some fresh greens, a nourishing fillet of steamed fish and a large bowl of fluffy fried rice. Everything was nicely presented, although this was one of those rare instances where I didn't take any photos during the meal as it wouldn't have been appropriate to do so, given the occasion.
