Review Tokyo Kitchen Sakae - Brighton

beside the price, the food taste alright, may need to come back again to try the ramen dine in, that would defiantly taste the different between take away & served it hot. the salmon roll was alright, size was fine. the store were well styled. love it

Great quality food and reasonably fast service. Broader selection than the usual Japanese places. Lovely sitting outside and watching the passing crowds.

I was shocked at the $5 sushi price and happily surprised with the think slab of tuna received Overall nothing overly special but nothing to complain on $19 poke bowl to be half full.
Wendy Cooper
Simply terrible. The inattentive cashier served the customer after me and I was charged more than the marked price. It also took nearly 5 minutes to prepare one inari that didn’t taste any better than a pre-made one. Definitely not worth a bother.
Steve Flack
It was nice, and quickish service, BUT $19 for poke is insane, for that price I was expecting something great but to feel like I was hungry after eating is very dissapointing. Ffs guys - just add more ingredients if you are charging $19 for a small bowl. Not going back. Don't recommend.

$19 for a poke bowl we expected something much better. The quantity was small. Sushi rolls didn’t have much filling & are $5 I’ve had better

Nice easy place for a nice good fix of comforting Japanese ramen. Especially so on a cold winter day! Definitely going into my list of favourites!

Sorry guys, the taste was great but the fish wasn’t bite-able and the wrap was too.

Be prepared to wait for service as they get busy. Staff are very friendly and once the food is ordered , it comes out fresh, hot and super tasty. BYO wine is great, no corkage even better. Very affordable and good value for money.

Authentic Japanese food accompanied well with warm Sake.

We've been here many times before and pleased with everything, but very disappointed this week. Seemed understaffed and staff were run off their feet even though restaurant was not full. What really disappointed us this time was that the food was not up to their previous high standard. Meals took a very long time and customers were complaining to each other about the long wait and portions were smaller than usual and the quality just wasn't there. May give them a try again but they really need to lift their game.

Delicious Japanese food, everything was great and delicious. Fast service!

KINDEST staff ever! Food is delicious and combination makes for the best atmosphere and experience.

Amazing Japanese restaurant! The best Japanese restaurant that I think in Melbourne!! Extremely good service and awesome food that I haven’t ever had.

Spotted this Japanese restaurant in Brighton. Amazing food and service. The taco and desserts is a must! Presentation & food speaks for itself, I highly recommend it and will come back again. Thank you for the experience.

One of the best Japanese restaurants in bayside
for lunches.

Every item ordered so far is tasty and cooked well

MUST ORDER : Teriyaki Salmon + vegetables lunch special , with rice, takoyaki (miso soup) included. $20 good deal

**NOTE : The main sizes in the lunch deal are not big or very filling!

The delicious lunch deals feature 1 main , rice , 1 side and miso soup .

Options such as fried calamari, takoyaki, prawn gyoza etc as "sides" .

The wagyu beef main is good too

Tokyo Kitchen Sakae offers a large assortment of sushi, sashimi and nigiri, which comes in large or small plates, along with a number of gyoza options. The mains are on the smaller side, more designed for one, not really for sharing. Service is great, friendly and attentive. There’s a large drinks menu hosting wines and beers both local a couple from Japan, but the best part of the long list of sakae at differing price points and flavours

Clean place, good food, good service.
Average portion, nicely placed.
Ordered both chicken katsu and pork loin, chicken was better I feel.
Lunch special is reasonably priced, dinner more pricey.

Really good food , large variety of choices and beverages. Friendly staff and quality dishes. I would recommend anyone here anytime. The crazy salmon roll is my personal favorite

I rarely give negative review on restaurants but I’m sorry, this restaurant will only get rating 1 from me based on reasons below;

1. Slow service time (with minimal customers)
2. Katsu Don
- Fried Pork was extremely hard to chew, really overlooked.
- Purple rice with Japanese dish? I have been to Japan several times in the past and never had a restaurant used any rice other than white rice.
- Over Priced $17 dollars for small bowl of rice, a few Pork, omelette, onions....... and two broccoli.

Another dish is fried udon......... Udon supposed to be chewy but this time the noodle was way overcooked........ too soft........

Sushi platter was okay, fresh to a certain degree.

Will I be dining here again?

No.

Sushi to celebrate another one of Emily's birthdays, what a surprise! This time in the heart of Brighton, we were delighted to see on Zomato such a nice looking place offering a diverse range of sushi, at a convenient location near our hotel. With ambience very good both inside and out, today we opted for the outdoor option in synchronisation with our summer theme.

With prompt and warm service, we were seated and began to order absolute demolition. A serving of the scallop rolls, volcano rolls, soft shell crab, sashimi, and salmon rolls, we were absolutely blessed to have tried all of these. The scallop rolls were nothing like we had before with a nice teriyaki sauce and juicy, succulent scallop on top. The volcano rolls had some very delicious tuna and the soft shell crab rolls- a highlight of them all, had two types of crab meat. The salmon rolls were one of a kind up there with our favourite over at Tookayai on Keilor. The sashimi was fresher than most too.

This place has made us realise that platters are overrated. Why pay for things you only kind of like when you can order so many things that you do! Definitely a top 5 sushi restaurant for us that we have ever had and would highly recommend it to all in the area!

Food: 4.5/5
Service: 3.5/5
Ambience: 3.5/5
Value: 3/5

Overall: 4/5

Service was really really slow but food was delicious, not really worth the wait though. Waited for about 35 minutes for food to come, and another 10 mins for the second dish to come, lastly about another 20mis for our last dish to come. Total all in, we were there for over an hour😞 disappointing

Came here for dinner recently. We had a great experience! Easy to book, everything was fresh, well priced, quickly friendly service and good sized portions! We'll definitely be back!
@twogoodtoresist
Tokyo sakae definitely offers a "something for everyone menu". All dishes are reasonably priced and quite generous in serving. Staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. We loved the salmon Katsu don, tuna sushi taco and the sashimi platter. A great restaurant for a casual family meal
LifeExplorersClub
Great little Japanese place located in the heart of Brighton. I have usually tuck into the tonkatsu which is delicious but this time chose the yakiniku chicken sizzling plate accompanied with purple rice. Good balance of meat veg and sauce at $19.50 made a satisfying value for money meal. Serves are a little on the smaller side which suits me just fine (I hate wasting food) but certainly wouldn't fill a super hungry tummy!

Fresh!
We have eaten here about 3 times and have enjoyed the food quality and freshness.
Most of the dishes on the menu we have ordered and on our last visit we had a large group, so we sampled a lot.
We have found the food to be consistent and of a high standard.
The service mostly starts of slow and have to remind wait staff to remove finished plates. I find this annoying and frustrating.
If not for the service, I would rate at a solid 4 or perhaps close to a 4.5.
More work needs to be done here!
I would still return without hesitation, only for the food.

The food has been very enjoyable every time we've been here. Never had an issue, even with take away. Fresh food, well prepared, delicious! And, it's consistent (something of a rarity in this area).

One of my favourite go to Japanese restaurants, always fresh and delicious. Have rarely had a bad experience here. It's not the best Japanese in melbourne but it's certainly a great local!

Fantastic food, nice and cozy place, friendly staff. the best dish is Salmon curry which tastes fantastic. highly recommended for all sorts of tastes.

Cold, cloudy and super windy, that’s how a day in the Melbourne winter is like. Everyone else might feel like something warm and soupy, but I all of sudden am in the sushi mood. On the way back from getting my chai I saw a little hidden sign saying “Tokyo Kitchen Sakae, spicy tuna roll”, I knew straight away I got my lunch settled.

Made a booking earlier in the week, wanting to try something new. Like trying new Japanese restaurants, as no two are the same and I think they make for great dining experiences, especially when you share lots of different small dishes between people. Always a fun date night and a bit of a treat for me and my partner. Would have overlooked this restaurant because I don't see Brighton as a great dining precinct, and would usually prefer to dine elsewhere. Service was really slow to start, about 30 minutes before they took our order even when we gave eye contact and waved. They weren't very busy, but they were seating people inside and outside. Meals were a bit all over the place, sashimi had bones in it. And was quite expensive. Food was pretty average, nothing really stood out for me.

Came for dinner with 2 friends on Saturday night close to 8pm. Restaurant was very busy but we got a seat, however it took over 10 minutes to get a menu and several requested for wine glasses and water. We ordered agadashi tofu, edamame, vegetable gyoza, vegetable pancake , spider roll and fried vegetable udon. The food came out quite fast , fresh and hot. Edamame was a bit on the hard side, tofu was cooked nicely it had a bit of crispness on the outside and silky soft on the inside. The gyoza filling was a bit bland but the outside was nice. Vege pancake was nice and crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside, just enough amount of jap mayo and teriyaki sauce on top. The spider roll was so so, presentation was nice but nothing stood out for me. The Udon noodles was a small portion but had nice flavour, more noodles please! The bill came to $73 so price wise was a winner. One of my gfs is vegan so the menu was good as it had many options. Another plus is they have byo wine and don't charge corkage. Service a bit slow but staff were friendly. Would come again.

Eaten here a number of times and always had a good meal. Great food, great service and excellent jazz in the background. If anything, it improves each time. The latest menu is highly recommended.

Not great! Went last night and the food was far from good.. Soggy dry and not fresh! The spicy tuna roll did not taste fresh! The chilli prawns were cooked in a wet sloppy chilli sauce and they were inedible! The highlight for me was the fact they had Aesop hand wash in the bathrooms! They need to up their standards if they want to stay in a Briiiiiiiighton 🙄

What an amazing experience.
From the outside,' my wife and i contemplated if it was worth while going into a small,Rather empty Japanese restaurant.
As soon as we passed through the threshold our fourtunes and our entire lives immedietley changed, what an absolute gem in the heart of brighton.
Service - exceptional.
Food - so close to being in Tokyo ( I have been twice)

Bravo

Welcome to Tokyo Kitchen
I will be back
The Emporer would be proud

Good food and good service. The staff know the menu well and are eager to please. I have no hesitations in having a meal here again. The food comes in a reasonable time after ordering.

Just ate here. A present evening dining with my girlfriends family, had goyza, a sushimi platter a beef dish and two lots of the chicken curry. However the rice came out way before the curry making the rice very clumpy by the time the curry came. Very decent. However only given one glass of water. Hence making table service ok, the outdoor setting is very nice.

Local in Brighton so my family and I tried dinner here. There wasn't much people the night I went so I wasn't expecting much... But it was seriously above my expectations. The assorted sashimi was really really nice.. Fish was fresh and the scallop sashimi just melted in my mouth! The mixed beef hot plate was also very nice. Everything was affordable with good portion sizes.. so best if you come with a bigger group in order to try more variety of dishes. Highly recommended!

Utter rubbish. I'm sorry but this place serves utter crap! Went for dinner tonight and had no booking so we sat outside which was ok as they had a heater above us but apart from that was very basic. We started with pork gyozas which were average, followed by chicken karage which was very average, oyster tempura, average and beef tataki which was about the best of a bad bunch. Then for main was wagu teppanaki and salmon teriyaki, both were very average, as what they do is put a few small pieces on the plate of salmon ect and fill it in with bamboo shoots and broccoli ect to make it appear a full plate and its smothered in a cheap sauce. So as far as a place to eat for Japanese I'd give it a big miss. Brighton does lack in decent restaurants regardless as I live here and know the area.

Funny taste...not authentic. Having been to Japan a number of times and eaten much better food, this restaurant did not impress me and my group at all. Food presentation is good but ingredient combination is funny. Wagyu beef was overcooked. We only realised at the end of our meal that we were served a bottle of plum wine that had passed best by date by 3 months. Overall if you are looking for authentic Japanese food there are better options.

Absolutely great food...highly recommended!!. Fantastic place with great food. The grilled eel is to die for and the tempura, sashimi and soft shell crab not far behind. After watching a movie wanted 'fast' food as it was getting late. The food came out quickly but no compromise on quality. Yes it was a bit cramped but with very reasonable prices that was a fair trade off. Byo wine also helps.

Great food!. We've had two great meals here, and will keep coming back.

Best value Japanese in Brighton - hands down.. My wife and I are both Japanese food fanatics, and from our perspective this place ticks all the boxes for a mid priced Japanese restaurant. The interior is all natural wood and mood lighting, and this combined with music (jazz) creates a wonderful, cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The food itself is quite authentic and reasonably priced, with the tempura entree in particular presenting great value for money. They also make the best takoyaki we've had in Melbourne, and it takes us straight back to those cold winter mornings in Osaka when we would warm our bellies with freshly made takoyaki from the street vendors. The Japanese tap beer is also great, cold and frothy coming straight out of the same cooling and tap systems used in restaurants over there. My only gripe is as the place becomes more popular they are increasing the seating which means we often have to sit elbow to elbow with strangers. A bit of a mood breaker for those on a date but with food, drink and service being as good as it is we're willing to overlook it.

Great Food. Went with a couple of friends. Food was fantastic and very tasty. A bit hidden away but glad we
stumbled on it. Will be coming back for more in the future. Highly recommend this restaurant. Not
noisy.

Miss Mary. A true delight, wonderful service, fabulous fresh food, beautifully presented, fair prices, ate too much and it worked out at $75 a couple. Would definitely recommend. One of Melbournes best Japanese.
