Review Half Moon - Brighton

Damon Pillinger
Interesting. Great location Good service The problem is the food is very hit and miss. i understand it's covid and hard to get chefs but they should change the menu when it works out at $100 per head. Swordfish and oysters are horrible. Tuna tartar was Interesting but not in a good way. The Duck and pork belly mains are great. Highly recommended. Meatballs are good especially with the toast Steak is good but a requested medium comes half rare and half medium. Cold beer, good cocktails and good choice of non-alcoholic. Chips are OK. Garlic bread is "interesting " The dining room is great. It isn't too noisy compared to the front area's. In short 3 of 5 gives the food and price.

Highly recommend this venue for a private function. We held an 18th Birthday upstairs in the Henry Room. Food was great and service was amazing. Our personal function manager on the night looked after us and ensured everything ran smoothly and we always had a drink in our hand. Room has a great vibe and we would style the room how we wanted.

Very trendy gastro pub. Mains were delicious. Dessert was a bit weird, small menu but had an apple crumble but it was definitely a cake. Still good but a tad disappointing. Will be back though for another meal :-)

A secret garden place for the community around. They have really giant space for customers and truly delicious food. My favorites are grilled skull prawns and the roast chicken. Sour, spicy, and salty in one plate. Enjoy the place and don’t forget to order one glass of cocktail.

Arrived at 12.00 & sat in the back dining room. Seemed very quiet. However the place was humming by the time we left. The food was bright & fresh. Hamburgers seemed very popular. Started with the large prawns followed with the Caesar Salad the white anchovies made the meal.

🥧 beef wellington 🐟 barramundi 🥩 porterhouse 🍳 steak tartare 🍄 warm mushroom tart 🍎 apple tart tartin 🏠: @halfmoonbrighton 📍: Church St, Brighton 📝: Half Moon, a much-loved local bar and restaurant located on the busy Church St, Brighton. They’ve got a mix of beautiful indoor and outdoor dining area with a delicious seasonal menu made from quality local produce. ❤️: Big shoutout to the 🐟 Barramundi with roasted 🥕 carrot puree, 🎃 pumpkin fondany, and cider beuree blanc. The fish skin was so perfectly crispy and flavorful and the flesh was fresh and tasty 😋. If you love meat, I’d recommend a 🥧 Beef Wellington or a 🥩 fillet of steak from the grill!

After many attempts we were at last able to hold the celebration for my 50th in the delightful Henry Room at Half Moon Brighton. Since my initial inquiry 11 months ago through to the wonderful event, Samantha was a tower of strength and positivity, constantly introducing new ideas and cheering me on to the certainty that the party would go ahead. All guests raved about the room, the balcony, the food and the friendly helpful staff. Anthony was spectacular and made sure the night was everything I could have hoped for and more!

The mussels were the best we have had and we have had a lot! We will definitely be back! The pizza was tasty but could have done with a little more topping.

Located on the main straight in Brighton and just metres from the Brighton Train Station, Halfmoon offers a modern pub styled venue that offers both indoor and outdoor seating.<br/>Whilst we did visit during winter, the outdoor heating will ensure you’re still nice and toasty.<br/> <br/>The prices are a little more than your average pub. Due to this, it did heighten my expectations. The Parma did not disappoint. However, the Pizzas were more on the underwhelming side – unfortunately.<br/>For the prices, I expected a little more. However the pizzas were quite simple looking with minimal toppings and simple flavours.<br/> <br/>The atmosphere was great and provided a fantastic venue to catch up with friends. It was not overly loud, even though it was quite busy when we visited.

Its the perfect spot near middle brighton station to catch up with a friend. I went to have a glass of wine and it was the perfect temperature in the room to dodge the windy winter blues. The staffs were absolutely amazing and friendly . Loved their collection of drinks.

Went last week for date night. Food and restaurant was lovely, tried the new veal schnitzel which was a a great portion and super tasty. Only complaint is that in a nearly empty restaurant we were seated right next to another couple (struggled to squeeze between tables). Other than that, really lovely!
The Dear Luncher
The Dear Luncher has visited Half Moon a few times, but this recent visit has prompted a review. This was the first proper sit down lunch after a few function visits. <br/><br/>The charcuterie spread to begin with, was great. It was probably lacking a cheese to balance it out though. Blood sausage doesn't sound appealing, but it was probably the highlight. Fleshy, artisan level sausage. Salami was first rate, however the prosciuto was unconvincing.<br/><br/>The 300gram Scotch fillet was the main ordered by yours truly. Prepared medium and with Café de Paris butter plonked on top. The butter made sexual relations with the fillet, resulting in glorious union of meat and butter that was heavenly. <br/><br/>Mrs Luncher was having a day off the keto diet and opted for the biggest carb load possible by ordering the seafood linguine. Packed full of fish, prawns, clams and mussels - it was given two very large thumbs up from a woman that has eaten 213124 seafood pastas in her life.<br/><br/>With almost all Colonial Brewing beers available either on tap or via tinnies, the beer selection is superb. The Colonial IPA is one of the better IPAs going around. The courtyard is a superb place to eat, particularly when you get a day like The Dear Luncher did just recently in Brighton. <br/><br/>A real safe, go-to option in BRIGHHHHHH-ton.

Went with 2 friends on a Tuesday night. Restaurant wasn’t busy, but service was terrible. Slow to get served , food was slow to come out. Steak was over cooked. Nice building and vibe was ok.
FBriacliff
Been there quite a while ago, but definitely the worst mojito I had ever, the bar tender for get to out sugar in there cause I just couldn’t taste any sweetness. The services are ok though.
Foodinfocusz
Our decision to dine at Half Moon on a beautiful, autumn Anzac Day was perhaps not the most savvy! I say this only because the place was jam-packed and as a result, incredibly noisy. The food and service were impressive and for sure we will return on a less auspicious, quieter occasion!
Dine And Dash
Been here now a few times - great music and awesome vibes at night. I’ve had the steak before but was a little over cooked and I wasn’t a huge fan of their polenta chips either. I’ll definitely be back for a drink but most likely not a meal.
Jenn.K
The polenta chips here are to die for. I usually order the polenta and the seafood pasta. Both are delicious and they are almost like comfort food for us.

Had dinner there for the first time last week! It was a Wednesday night and it was a packed place! We made a booking earlier. <br/><br/>We went to the back dining area which can accomodate quite a few. Decor and space make up for a great ambience. Food was great with an extensive menu. I accidentally spilled my drink on the table and was given another free of charge which was very kind of them.<br/><br/>Our little one enjoyed the kids menu and overall we had a great time. Staff were very friendly. Great range of cocktails too!
David Fantablonde
Went for lunch here on a Friday. There is a reason there were only a handful of people there. Prices are ridiculous for what is served up. Disappointed with the burger. A burger needs to have a pattie that matches the bun, both of the tables burgers had lots of spare space for bread.
Alan King
Good local with friendly staff and great steaks! Go for happy hour followed by a meal in the restaurant. Nice selection of beers on tap from Colonial
Donita
Had dinner and drinks few months ago. I'm ordered seafood linguine, it tastes ok with many seafood in it but so expensive. The venue was supercool, it has bar, dining area and outdoor seating (also balcony on top). Nice to have drinks, catch up with friends.
Grace
Really good fish and chips with accommodation for everyone. There is an outdoor seating area and a lovely indoor area, the staff are friendly and tend to your needs well.
Renata
To begin with after placing our order we waited 45min for raw vegetable plates. Then the main meals half of the menu they ran out of the other half was bellow average. The photo I posted was a chicken pie. To us it looked like slosh. Very disappointed with slowwww service and the food????? No words. Very over priced.
Adamalta
Two areas to eat, the bar area and to the back the seated more formal dinning area. Ive only eaten at the bar area and I was fairly surprised. Parma was great and so were the pizzas. Plenty of deals on different nights and perfect for a meal and drinks with mates.

We met here before going on to dinner elsewhere as planned.<br/><br/>Ambience is good. A bit noisy in places, but we found a relatively quiet corner where we could talk.
Melbourne Epicurean Juror
Lunched here yesterday having had this venue recommended by a friend & I was overall pleased. I ordered their Chicken Pie, hand-cut Chips with a fennel & mint Salad at $24, the pie was full of chicken pieces & some vegetables and was truly flavoursome also the chips were fried to perfection. My dish was served steaming hot within 15 minutes of ordering although the bistro wasn't busy when I first arrived. Service provision was very good by Amy the waitress, I found her to be friendly & efficient, although a bit disappointed that 2 tables had no salt & pepper shakers (including mine so I had to ask) & I also wasn't warned of the exceptionally hot copper based small pot the pie was served in. The vocal background music was barely audible therefore could be heard over easily & the ambiance was bright & cheery.<br/><br/>The Juror's Verdict: Food 5/5, Service Provision 4.25/5, Will I return: Maybe, prices of other dishes were a bit too expensive<br/><br/>Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

One word: awful. I walked in five minutes before our reservation; as I was 8 and a half months pregnant at the time, so my husband could park the car. The head waiter directed me to stand at the packed bar while he 'got our table ready'. The dining area was 80% empty. I stood ( heavily pregnant!!) for 30 minutes while we waited for our ( already set up) table to be available. Then waited a further 30 minutes for a hastily ordered steak a piece. Over priced and self absorbed staff. Never again.

The Venue is great however the veal I had was tough. I mentioned this to the waitress and she said she would tell the chef. That was it. I would hope that an iconic hotel like this one would have made sure that the customers were happy.

Omg finally a decent pub found in the south-east <br/>Living north all my life great corner pubs everywhere moving to south end soon and thank the pub gods I found a pub and a great one . We had a ball .. initial reception was poor .. however they picked up the pace and there game rapidly ..food and wine list were exceptional .. we definitely will be making this another regular date night event .
Mary Merrington
Had dinner there with friends a few months ago.<br/>My main course was steak, chips and salad which was tasty but hugely expensive!<br/>I have had better at much better prices at a couple of bayside southern suburbs.... $15.00 and $18.00!<br/>The steak here in Brighton was a bit tough and over done when I had ordered medium rare.<br/>They need to get that right or I will be returning it requesting for one that was what I ordered.<br/>Choice of steak needs to be more tender quality as well because fibrous medium rare steak will never become tender.<br/>Last night we had drinks at the front bar but had to move outside with the smokers unfortunately because it was so noisy with the older men all talking with very loud voices making it difficult to hear ourselves speak unless we shouted which would further contribute to the high decibels. Would be worse if you had live music playing.<br/>Outside became very cold so went home.<br/>Glad when no more smoking is allowed outside so nonsmokers could also be able to enjoy FRESH AIR INSTEAD OF CIGARETTE AND CIGAR SMOKE which is CARCINOGENIC AND DNA DAMAGING!<br/>Had a small pizza which was way too thin but tasty.
Maxkonji
$22 for approx 10 pieces of calamari <br/>Crap. Will not be eating here again<br/>Amount of salad was no better<br/><br/>Could not even feed a rabbit<br/>Give it a miss <br/><br/>

Half Moon is back! It was rubble for a while but when they re-opened it had a whole new air of coolness about it and it looks like it is going really well. They have cleverly zoned the big space with indoor bar, outdoor seating and a bistro area plus function spaces. We usually hang in the bar or in the outdoor space but it’s a bit cold tonight and the heaters can’t fight it so we headed into the bistro.
Peter Armstrong
Give the pub a big miss, 2 pints for $34 and a barman with a snobby attitude when questioned why so expensive. Nice decor but not worth those ridiculous prices, I'll never visit there again.
World Eats Food
The rib eye steak was super tasty! Definitely will come back for more! Staff were very friendly, bar makes a great Mojito & interior of the venue was very cool.
Stefanie Gilchrist
Had a delicious suckling pig here! Love that you can go here with a group of friends and know that the food is good. I will have to come back to try more of the menu.
Glorious Food Melbs
Midweek dinner was steak with chips & salad. My boyfriend and his mates had the parma. Another friend had the calamari. I liked my steak, although the salad was quite plain with only lettuce, dressing and onion (more of a garnish really). I'd also always choose chunky chips over shoestring. Considering the cut of steak I probably wouldn't pay the $32 again. My boyfriend got a really well cooked and decent sized parma which he gave the thumbs up. What was most disappointing was definitely the small size of the calamari main course. Our friend ordered a parma for main as well as the calamari as soon as it arrived due to its small size.

Have been here a few times & the service is always so slow in the Dining Room. Tonight was probably the worst service to date. The waitress even struggled to put a smile on her face & left the table without even collecting all the drink orders. The Orecchiette lacked salt & any flavor. The only positive note was the desserts which were exceptional.
Bigdoggeats
Good food and great atmosphere in the front bar. Prices are reasonable for the Brighton area. Great outdoor area. Had the scotch fillet off the front bar menu. Cooked to perfection. Chef only cooks it to medium rare. Although it possibly was a little rare than I anticipated but I like my steak that way. <br/><br/>Only negative is that the staff were a bit eager to clean the tables too quickly. <br/><br/>Also has a great selection of tap beers.<br/><br/>Would go back.<br/><br/>

Came here for lunch and ate in the outside area. Its a nice place to sit if the weather is good. We ordered from the bar menu - chicken wings and porchetta sandwich. I tried to order the polenta chips but was told they had run out which is understandable, however I later saw them go out to another table that had ordered after us. Also the porchetta sandwich came in pita rather than bread, which isn't mentioned on the menu. Overall the food was alright, but nothing particularly exciting. Otherwise the service was good. A rather pleasant place to have a few drinks.
Sam
Really lovely menu and wonderful range to drink. Nothing disappoints here. There is a nice classy but casual outdoor area for a drink with friends or a lovely inside area that is perfect for a celebration with the family or an intimate dinner with a date or partner. It really has whatever you are looking for ;)
Aggiekobe
Nice place, delicious food. Apple cider is perfect. Dessert is just to die for. <br/>Not enough attention, probably because this place is too big with only three waitress. But we didn't mind get the menu ourselves. <br/>But they don't have soy milk or any other non-dairy milk. Woo~~

The children working behind the bar should really stop talking to each other, and serve.. i stood at the bar for way to long. Half moon management please look in to this. Also serve both men and women not just women..Very disappointed.
KITCHFIT
700g T-Bone steak and cider! Do I need to say more!? Not only are the steaks big! They're tender, juicy and delicious!! I love a good steak! Service was not all that great but the food we had most certainly was!
Işın Gizem Çelik
Cool place and it was also open before new years. That was a really hot day. I got a glass of rose and my friends ordered different beers. We also got parma. It was delicious.
Alex Whitney
Disappointing experience. Manager rude and arrogant from the time we arrived. Large party wanting to eat together. No attempt to accommodate us. Food disappointing. Expensive and small serves. Complaints about undercooked food were met with the response - oh you changed your mind. Minimum of $20 on eftpos so all had to have bar tabs. Had to leave credit cards behind bar - security no no. Would not recommend.

On the positive side the service was excellent, very attentive and good humored; sadly the waiter did too good a job on over selling the quality of the food. I ordered the slow cooked lamb. It was not slow cooked, raw in the middle and dry as a bone on the outside. Poor execution of a low quality piece of meat. Inexcusable for a gastro pub to produce poor steak and meat dishes. <br/><br/>Venue and location are perfect, but the food was mean and poorly prepared using cheap meat.<br/>The place needs a chef which can match the location and venue.<br/><br/>......and they don't honor good food cards, so ask before you sit down.

My hubby and I have been here a few times since moving to Melbourne. Staff are always friendly and the service is always great. Lovely outdoor area, perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Close to shops and public transport :)<br/><br/>www.myromanceaddiction.com.au

I worked in this restaurant for awhile and ate here too. It is Modern Australian and the concept is very interesting - pomegranate on salad as well as working with a massive selection of salad items, sous vide or slow cooked chicken breasts for their salads and sandwiches. The venue is quite interesting too and posh. I am quite disappointed that the past reviews has been bad. I hope this restaurant recovers balance soon. Oh, this restaurant was also featured in a television show.
Michael Pilkington
Have eaten here multiple times and the food is never great. Not very generous and have struggled with undercooked steak and bland burgers. Good for a pint in the evening but don't bother with anything else.
La Contadina
Great local pub. Caters for gf options happily! I'd give this place a 5 if I could get a gf Parma! Great wine list better than most pubs. Staff are friendly happy to have this as my local:))<br/>

Great function in the central room. Just had my daughters 21st birthday party in the Central Room. I could not have wished for a better night. We were all very impressed with the choice of menu, service was professional, the food was cooked well and flavoursome. <br/>We were able to decorate the room which added to the festivities. 5 stars Half Moon. Thanks

Burger was pedestrian. Brioche bun and aged cheese were pretty good but the patty was very dry. Serving of fries was extremely stingy and as far as I'm concerned this is unforgivable for a pub. Pint of Asahi $14???? They are lucky the venue is pretty and in waking distance.
Zomg_Melbourne
Had a strange experience at Half Moon. The waiter seemed very awkward and unresponsive to simple requests, which came across as quite unprofessional. The dessert menu has changed since last time I dined here which was also disappointing. When we went to pay, I had a voucher for a discount but the waiter needed permission to authorise from him manager to redeem the voucher and he didn't know where his manager was so I wasn't able to receive the discount. Very poor

Over-priced food : Under-valued customer. We've eaten bar food here before and been reasonably happy (although I echo other comments about slowness of service). However last night's visit was a fiasco and an utter rip-off. I ordered a squid salad and my partner ordered a tofu salad. Now, these are meant to be "bar snacks" - nothing up market here. My squid salad was $25 and the tofu salad was $18. The squid salad was acceptable but still a lot of money for what it was. However, the tofu salad was a joke. This salad consisted of a handful of rocket and THREE (3) pieces of tofu (see photo).<br/><br/>We complained to the duty manager. His initial response was to offer a glass of wine as recompense. I told him I wasn't interested in a glass of wine, what I did want was either a decent salad or a refund. He went and checked with the Chef. The response was that it was expensive silken tofu and there was quite a lot of food there. Are you serious - look at the photo! 60g of rocket retails for $2 and 300g of silken tofu retails for about $3 so let's assume we had a whole packet of rocket and a whole packet of tofu (which we didn't), then the RETAIL cost of ingredients would have been about $5. Now I understand that there is more than just ingredients and there has to be a markup in order to make a profit but this is ridiculous. <br/><br/>The manager then said the food was from the restaurant - a comment I can only assume was made to imply we were getting restaurant quality food. I'm sorry - this comes straight from a kitchen. We were NOT seated in a restaurant with linen tablecloths, silver cutlery and attended to by waitstaff. We sat at a bar with self-serve utensils and condiments with paper napkins - which is fine, but don't tell us or imply we're enjoying fine dining!<br/><br/>In the end we neither ate the tofu salad nor paid for it. The other disappointing aspect of this is that we were made to work hard to justify our complaint with little or no concern or understanding from the manager.<br/><br/>The verdict: Half Moon = Half-hearted.

Went here on a Sunday night and was very impressed, staff were kind and my chicken Parma was beautiful, but my cousin ordered a fish and chips for $25 and got 5 chips and 2 pieces of fish, other wise a good night

I’d have to say that this burger hunt is probably the most controversial to date. I guess it comes back to the question –  What attributes must be present for a food item to be classified as a burger? When is a burger not a burger? This was the issue faced by Chris and I on Monday night. Since Chris is a much better writer than I am, he has kindly provided his take on the whole affair – however I will provide my own tasting notes on the burgers and judgement here – (as a side note –  we ordered two Burgers, a side of Poutine, and dessert – sticky date and chocolate fondant) : For all intents and purposes the burger looks like a pretty normal burger. It’s a bit on the small side for my tastes – that annoying size between a slider and a hamburger, but you get a heafty slab of meat so you won’t leave hungry… The bun is a nice light brioche, very sp

If you ever go to Half Moon all I can say is for Main - HAVE THE RIBS! Tender pork which has been rubbed with a fantastic spice which almost whacks you in the face with intense smokeyness and hint of chilli. With it's accompaniment coleslaw which allowed you to cool down and had a fantastic flavour similar to an asian slaw with fresh corriander or mint. It truly made the dish of the night for me.

I really like the Half Moon and would happily travel out this way to dine here one evening even without the lure of great local theater performance.

Half Moon has changed a few times over the years but has always kept it’s name. It seemed to be empty for a very long time but this prime position in Brighton is now very much a hot favourite with the locals and rain or shine seems to be overflowing with happy punters. From the front it looks like a reasonable size space with a bar and covered garden-esque area but when you pop inside you find the place just goes on and on with a good sized restaurant and functions areas!! I really love the private dining room too a little glam space for a select group to enjoy! The Bar Menu ‘Hands Best Friend’ is a mouthwatering list of small bites like pork pies, calamari, skewers, scotch egg along with ‘Pub Classics’ – the burger, fish and chips and parma – similar staples to the offering in the dining area. We arrive with our Dimmi booking online all sorted but no record of our booking in the system which is a bit worrying but the guys are lovely and fortunately a no – show means we get a table qui
The Burger Adventure
Split over 2 levels and boasting no less than 6 drinking and dining spaces both indoors and outdoors, Half Moon caters to everyone from families with little kids eating dinner, mates catching up and watching the footy to cougars on the hunt for their future ex-husbands. The menu offers a small selection of pub classics as well as a some pastas and meat dishes. We ordered the Beef Burger that had bacon, Swiss cheese, sweet and sour onions, lettuce, tomato and aoili served with chunky steak fries.

Lost their way!!. Is anyone ever in control at the Half Moon. There is no visible management unless they are on their computer in public areas doing rosters or whatever...<br/>The bar specials have disappeared. Food cost issue ????<br/>What a disappointment !
Amanda Walters
Extremely slow service and extremely disappointing food. The snapper served with rocket and overcooked school prawns was almost inedibly bitter, very unpleasant. The oysters with crab had a foul texture (and I love natural oysters), and the eaton mess was pretentious, even for Brighton, nothing like the desert it is named for. <br/>Will not return

Happy summer nights at the moon. Friendly and attentive bar and dining staff paired with a fresh contemporary selection of wine and beers, food was delicious and presented really well. Will be coming back soon!

Disappointing. I had a calamari salad which cost $25. It can only be described as a pile of leaves and not the best tasting calamari by a long shot. I really like this place and took a friend to show it off and wasn't expecting the disappointing food experience.
Bella
Underwhelming. Had the gnocchi for $24. The first few bites were tasty, but it ended up just being really garlicky, and not what we expected for that price (ie. $2 a piece, I was still quite hungry after). The other dish we had was the melanzane ($28) which was okay, but pretty bland, and again, not what we expected for the price. Service was very slow - we were seated with the drinks menu and then forgotten about. The staff were very apologetic about it, but it was pretty frustrating trying to catch their attention for so long.<br/><br/>I definitely wouldn't return - there are a lot of other places I'd choose to dine at for the same price or cheaper. Overall a bit of an underwhelming experience.

Just had dinner with 2 friends and got the bill & went to pay & was told of the no split bill policy. This policy is not anywhere to be seen.

No good. Had the $15 slow cooked meal...beef bourginon with mash....the plate was only 2/3rds full and a third of this was with mash..had a spponful of light brown casserole with around 5 bits of meat and a few mushrooms. very very disappointing, a real rip off

Seafood and champagne!. Amazing! Live Jazz, seafood, drinks, I had a great night guys. Thanks for the effect. It was packed which creates a fantastic atmosphere, worth it going all the way to Brighton for your Seafood Spectacular. The canapés were delicious; the decoration with the ice sculptures was a hit! Can’t wait for the next one, hope at least your Oyster Frenzy is coming soon!!

Just left a brilliant night at Half Moon for the Oyster Frenzy. Heaps of oysters freshly shucked and even some cooked ones came through. The music was brilliant and our glasses were never empty. Congratulations for a great event!<br/><br/><br/>-----27 Mar, 2014-----<br/><br/>Went to the Hf Moon tonight for their seafood spectacular event. We were bitterly disappointed with an evening that was not at all adequate. There was very little food - the waiters were mobbed by the attendees and the kitchen obviously not advised the number of punters. We had to wait 30 mind before we got a piece of sushi. At the end of the evening they even brought out chips, maybe in Brighton potatoes come out of the sea? Completely unreasonable pricing for the food provided. To the venue's credit, they offered a reasonable alternative after our third complaint. Hopefully they have learnt the hard way,

Thoroughly enjoyed the flavors. Mum and I had oysters for starter & barramundi for main. The thyme infused poached fruits for desert was interesting and delicious. I especially liked the Pinot Grigio by the glass. I find with someplaces the wine by the glass options are a bit bla.. But not here:)

Top quality food and great service. Went to Half Moon without booking hoping for dinner in the separate restaurant section - I'm new to the area- and they were fully booked. But the maître d was so nice enough to call us back to let us know that a couple had just finished dinner and offered us a booking. My steak was cooked to perfection and service was fantastic. Thanks Half Moon:)
John Geasumi
Went there for dinner, food wasn't bad but service could have been better. It's really got that Brighton vibe, eww. I suspect too many Brighton Grammar boys have been in there wearing polo shirts.
Clb
Very poor quality & poor value meals. Besides the extremely slow and inattentive service, the meals we ordered as a group of 10 were overhyped on the menu, disappointing slop. Small portions. Will never be back to eat.
Danny Sakkas
Worst service went last night for a friends birthday in the back room we were hosted by the rudest girl I've ever met the funny thing was the topic of the night was how rude the bargirl was never go back

Poor form. Walked in randomly Wednesday night for early steak dinner. Restaurant was empty. Pre-occupied staff member told us restaurant didn't open till 6pm, which was just 20 minutes away. I asked if we could sit in the restaurant and wait with a drink. The reply was a cold "no" and he went back to his paperwork. If he had any clue, he could have politely sat as at the bar, organised us a drink and offered to seat us in the restaurant at 6pm. We sat at the bar for ten minutes and no one served us. We spent our money elsewhere. I've eaten here before, the food is good, but clearly the service is very poor.
JustWandering
Pub food. Recommend their fish and chips.<br/>Good bar selection.<br/><br/>If you're hungry - don't get the parma expecting a traditional pub style schnitzel.
Latham.4
What a joke. We arrived for Friday lunch and ordered 3 Parmas at $26.00 each. What an absolute joke. We have all been eating parmas for years and to say we were ripped off is an understatement. Words cannot even describe the pathetic meal that we received. A few chips, a bit of salad and a piece of rolled chicken with a burnt piece of ham around it and so small. Just because its Brighton don't think we are stupid and can afford it.<br/><br/>My best advice is if you walk past Half Moon , keep walking!!!
George_Renee
Not bad.... We had Friday night drinks and ate dinner in the dining area. The bar was busy and the service to get a drink was very very average and very slow... The staff in the dining area were excellent and very friendly and the food was lovely. The waitress knew what each dish was and was able to explain menu items. I noticed they have a great little space/room out the back, perfect for a celebration/party. The crowd inside were of the older persuasion, great for the older crowd. A pleasant evening overall..
JB
Nice bar space and restaurant area. Food was reasonable with attentive staff in dining area.
Joey Commerford
Had a steak at half moon tonight.. Um so I asked for a medium rare steak got a blue/rare steak sent it back expecting to get a new medium rare steak .. But no I got the cut in half steak I sent back.. Asked to talk to a manager .. He/she didn't come... As a restaurant manager i know what good and bad service is...this is woeful ... As a upper end scale pub you expect half decent service this is low end stuff
Lisa Fusaro
Very disappointed. In a nice location but food size and service was disappointing. Ordered a beer root salad; the chef obviously was trying to look like master chef and the meal looked like the size for a small toddler-with a few bites of beer root and no salad. Tuna seared salad was not seared and when went to complain had to argue with the waitress who finally agreed to send it back to the kitchen. On a plus size, the pizza portions were great. Would not go back again though.

Overpriced!. What ever happened to value for money? Obviously it has gone by the by at the Half Moon in Brighton. $32 for a piece of fish and a bit of salad. $36 for a small rack of pork ribs. Poor service, very limited menu, the gluten free option for the cheese plate, meant you didn't get the bread, so $16 for a small piece of cheese then. Up your game...

Ordered the Hanger steak which was very tasty but stone cold. Sent it back. Second meal wasn't cold but $40 steak was tough and chewy. When 2nd steak arrived I had no cutlery which took another 5 minutes to arrive. Also waited 15 minutes for a bottle of wine which was eventually reordered. A bad experience a round and not a word of apology or any concession on a $400 bill. I won't be back.

Amazing pizza and great drinks including ruinart champagne which is not widely available. Lovely outdoor garden area.

Bad in every way. Bad food (worst steak i've eaten in months - and priced at $38), bad service, bad food, bad service. <br/>Won't be back.<br/>It's not rocket science learning how to serve a customer. Far too over priced.

New Menu?. Nice venue and good place for a drink with friends, however what is with the new menu!! In an effort to be polite I will not go into details. Please just bring back the old menu or improve the new menu.

Very disappointing..won't go back for food. I visited for the first time with a group of 12 friends on Friday night and immediately was impressed by the decor and surrounds but that's where it stopped: food average, service poor and very pricey. I ordered medium rare (mooing) steak and sent it back but the return dish was still mooing (a little weaker albeit). My cheeseboard came with half a loaf of fruit bread (yuck!) and the wine sat on the sideboard unless we helped ourselves. Obviously the Christmas party in the room behind us was more important? Oh, and they couldn't allow those of us who wanted entree / main or main/dessert..too hard?

Really disappointed. They've stuffed up with the new menu. The pork ribs were so salty they had to be sent back. The lamb skewers in a wrap really need some yogurt or sauce to lift the dish. The new Tijuana burger is ok although the guacamole seemed missing. A strange choice as a pub classic if you're to only offer one burger. Doesn't come with fries but corn chips with melted cheese. The bucket of chicken wings were only just cooked enough which is a shame as the lovely flavours marinade would have crisped up the skin. Instead it was like jelly. Side flog fries were nice. In summary it seems a badly chosen menu that isn't prepared well and I wouldn't come back here again after today's experience.

Might be the worst Parma I have had. Kids meal was raw which is not good when chicken. Not coming back.

Loved the Chocolate Pudding with Hokey Pokey ice cream for dessert but was a bit unimpressed by the marinated roasted Spatchcock main. It was served with an almond salad & little potatoes (which were more like giant, soggy croutons). The sliders entree/sharing plate was tasty and a generous portion. Would like to try the Waygu and mushroom pie next time. Seriously though - yum town chocolate pudding!

My Local Favourite- no more. We have just eaten at our favourite local pub 'Half Moon" in Brighton and are bitterly disappointed by not only the meal but the attitude of the waitress. I ordered my favourite "pork ribs'" which I have eaten there on several occasions. From my first efforts to cut what should be parralel bones my knife was unable to easily navigate the tissue. The bones were not parralel as ribs should be but placed in all directions including jointed tissue. The meat was tough and fatty and very "light on". These were obviously not ribs. I spoke to the waitress .who initially was quite sympathetic and assured me she would talk to the chef. When she came back to clear my plate she said she had spoken to the chef and it was the sternum cut ??? and the 'luck of the draw' mmm... either the chef needs a lesson in anatomy or a new supplier, either way, I should not have been dismissed with the 'take it or leave it ' attitude. The meal was gross. Not good enough Half Moon. I am a local resident and support Church St whenever I can. You should be more respectful of your clients. It would only have taken an apology and a dessert or coffee offer. Half Moon- no longer our favourite.

Went with some friends for lunch. I had a Barramundi special which was really good, others had Chicken Parma, Beef Pie, Salmon Salad and Rocking. Everybody enjoyed their meals, I would go back.

Interior is nice, upstairs bar is more comfortable than the downstairs sports bar but is hardly ever open. I've eaten here quite a few times, hoping it will get better. It didn't. Some of the bar snacks are good. Main meals - forget about it. Overpriced. One day we spent almost 30 dollars on an antipasto plate. There were two pieces of crappy Hungarian salami, one piece of prosciutto and three bits of bread and chutney. It was absurd. It promises everything but only delivers a bar. I've gradually stopped going there. Hopefully they pick up their game because after all the money they sunk into renovating this pub, it seems priorities are amiss

Happy customer. Went on a Thursday night with 8 others for a work dinner and had a great time. Excellent selection of beers and wines, good food and service from friendly staff. Wouldn't drive to the other side of town to try it but certainly a good place to dine if you're in the area.
The Hungry Croat
Good food. Went on a Tuesday night with 3 others, ordered the beef burger and the ribs and both were delicious. Maybe I was expecting worse after all the negative reviews but I'd happily return for a pub meal when in Brighton next. Service is friendly.
Banana Splits

My partner and I dined here the other week and we were both extremely impressed with the whole experience. It was a Sunday night so one of the quieter nights I would expect, but there were enough people dining and in the front bar area for there to be a nice atmosphere. The service was excellent. Wait staff were very attentive but certainly did not give you the feeling they were trying hurry you up. The food was excellent! I had the fish of the day (snapper) and it was one of the best meals I've had in a long while. Wine list was great, and deserts were beautiful. All in all a great dining experience. We will go back for sure.

CRAP you can do better. There are many nice places to eat in Brighton, this is not one of them. Average food, poor service, rude and abrupt staff, useless "bouncers". Remember you are at a pub, and it is nothing special. Don't let the post code think it is a great option I am a local and this place is the last place I would ever go to again.

A table for 12 please. A party for 12? Sure no problem.<br/>Celebrating a birthday dinner there was surly no issues with catering on a busy saturday night for a large table at 7pm, as many restaurants these days will always say 6pm is the more suited time or 8pm.<br/>This tucked away dining room, is arranged fantastically not being shoved in a corner or feeling like a sardine in a can with brick walls and creme decor.<br/>Staff were attentive to the beginning of the evening up until dessert where they faded away and service became almost nil, but whether that was due to the increasing demand at the bar for Saturday night drinks.....<br/>Food was fantastic having share plates to begin with followed by sum very scrumptious mains and dessert of which was enjoyed by all.<br/>With a function room and bar both having loud music it did effect the overall dining experience with having to yell over the music, but over all a pleasant evening.

Ms R Kruss. I recently celebrated my daughters 21st at Half Moon Brighton. We booked a function room together with drinks and food. I don't as a rule write a review but the food was so exceptional that I had no choice. The budget that my daughter had set was limited and we thought she might run out of food or drinks but not only was each individual food choice of exceptional quality and taste and plentiful, the drinks were more that suffiicient as I believe an honest bar tab was maintained by the friendly staff.I would have to mention the pear cider as that was a hit with many of the more mature family members. As sceptical as I was in the begginning I would have no hesitation in recommending Half Moon for your function and found the manager Belinda was very helpul in assisting my daughter in making the best choices in keeping with her budget.

Great pub The place was packed on a Friday night and so it should be! Brighton...I'm jealous, wish there was a pub like this near me. Food is simple, tasty and inexpensive, staff looked after us and were really helpful. There is nothing like this pub anywhere else in Brighton...that's for sure

Half moon - do not go,. There are many places to eat in Brighton and I have eaten in most. White Rabbit is the best and Half Moon is the worst.<br/><br/>The food is average at best, the place lacks atmosphere and the staff are rude. The staff on the door have no concept of customer service and are totally unwelcoming. Brighton is one of Melbournes nicest suburbs so why employ bogans to staff the door. Try Indian Palace or Dendy Plaza or maybe even go to Hampton. Anywhere except this place.
