Delicious butter chicken, beef madras and lamb biryani. Will definitely return. Decor a bit daggy but food is the best Indian around Brighton currently
The most consistent high quality Indian food in Melbourne! Authentic delicious and full of flavours! Have had dinner here twice now after discovering it a year after moving to Brighton and it's a go to for us now! Highly recommended restaurant for dinner or take away! Beef vindaloo naan it's all good!
I like the open kitchen window here where you can see the chef preparing the meal and overall the service here was very accommodating. Food was a bit blander than I had anticipated though- maybe toned down for Brighton tastes...
Amazing food and service. We loved the flavours of all dishes, the quality of the meats and the freshness of the naan. Cannot wait to come back!
Nice Indian food although nothing extraordinary. Staff were quiet and efficient. Venue nice, although if the restaurant was full the tables would probably be too close to other patrons.
Normally I can't stand Indian food, over powering nasty stuff! But I was pleasantly surprised with the food I had at this venue. My friend purchased the Groupon for 6 people, and ordered kids meals also. All the meat/vegetable dishes were tasty and fresh. The sauces were very pleasant. The rice was fluffy and big servings. Loved my meal and has given me hope of eating Indian again. Highly recommend giving this place a go! Also friendly staff :). Just wish I took more photos and not just of one of the kids plates.
BEST EVER. We've had our fair share of Indian food and this is hands down the best restaurant in Melbourne. Not only is the cuisine incredible, but the atmosphere is great and service is impeccable. Heaps of choice on the menu, loads of veggie options but plenty of meat too- can be made mild or super hot. Price is extremely reasonable for the excellent quality. Fresh food with gorgeous flavours. Without fault. Will recommend to others and most definitely return.
Came here late one evening to find that they were still open! We ordered prawn masala, some dal, the blue cheese naan and some paratha. The service and the ambiance were excellent. It wasn't busy, seeing as it was around 9pm on a week night. I wanted a plain sweet lassi and they were willing to make it for me even though it wasn't on the menu. Would definitely recommend.
Went here for the first time a few weeks ago & have been back numerous times since. Every time has been absolutely delicious. The Burra kebab & the Goat Curry are a stand out. Loved seeing the tandoori chef work his magic in the tandoor display. The manager is very attentive & happily catered to some dietary requirements. This place is celebrating its 35th year & I can definitely see why. Great food, Great service, amazing ambience. Thumbs up
I absolutely loved my meal at Shalimar.
Amazing Chops to start. They have got a kick.
Butter chicken main was outstanding and the staff are amazing
Had a sensational experience at Shalimar. The waiters were attentive and the food was incredible. Best Indian food I've had since London - which is quite something! Highly recommend it.
This family run restaurant is faultless. The son of the cook was our waiter. He explained everything, modified the dishes to our particular dietary requirements and assisted with menu choices. Best of all the food was delicious.
Sensational Indian food. This place is a ripper. Don't think twice if you're after delicious Indian food. The butter chicken is the best I have ever had
We just love Shalimar. It's been a Brighton fixture for nearly 40 years and they are just wonderful.
The service is so attentive and they always look after us beautifully.
And the food... It's just delicious! I've never had a dish here that wasn't fantastic. Everything tastes fresh and like it's made with love.
This place is a winner.
As far as I know we've been going to Shalimar at least twice a year for 20 years, which is not bad considering we now live around 30km (20 miles) away. Now a new generation is managing Shalimar and the food and service are still among the best of Indian inspired restaurants in Melbourne. The Tandoor meals are always good and usually top of our list; prawn masala, beef curry, lamb tindaloo, rogan josh, and cuchumber salad have all been dishes we've tried and enjoyed. And don't forget the samosas or some onion bhajis to start. I used to live in the area, a family member still does, and would go more often if we lived close.
In a nutshell the Shalimar has just produced the best curry I have had for 11yrs. Coming from Newcastle Upon Tyne any curry expert understands that writing this is a sign of a Great curry experience!
Enjoy.
Great family owned restaurant! The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, meals are served quickly, steaming hot and full of flavour. See you again soon, Shalimar!
Best Indian in town. I'm a lover of Indian Cuisine and Shalimar Indian Restaurant is one of the best Restaurants I have ever been to. A family owned and run affair makes it all the more wonderful. You can feel the love in the cooking, every dish was delicious and made with love. The service was friendly and delivered with a smile and nothing was too difficult. The Shalimar wine selection was also a winner! I had the perfect evening with friends and it felt very homely. I'm looking forward to my next meal at Shalimar Indian Restaurant!!! 5***** all the way!!! Thank you for a fantastic night!!! I'll be back!!!
Festivus - Lovely Indian. Wasn’t very busy which didn’t seem right as food fantastic
From the entrée to the mains all very good
No attitude when handing over a voucher either
Thanks guys
Great Indian Food. Visited this Brighton establishment with a friend and was thoroughly impressed. The service was immaculate and the food delicious. We shared a Tandoori platter, plain Nann and I had a Mango Lassi, all Indian restaurant staples and all done to perfection.
Good service and fantastic food, I will definitely eat here again.
Easily the best indian food in melb. Tried curries at other places but nobody comes close. This place is a must try.
Lovely dining experience. The food at this place is always fresh and the curries tasty. It is everything you would expect from an Indian restaurant; authentic, reasonably priced and friendly wait staff. My wife and I will definitely be back.
Delicious Food. Flawless! From the service, through to the delicious chicken tikka masala (my absolute favourite). We have been going to this restaurant for over 4 years and have never been disappointed. YUM!!
Great Food. I have visited Shalimar on many an occasion. The authentic Indian food is out of this world (especially their butter chicken and kulfi - YUM!) and the prompt & friendly service keeps me coming back for more. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone. The food is excellent value for money, especially in the Brighton area. You will not be disappointed! See you soon Shalimar, for my next Indian fix!
Regards,
Mr Capeman
The food was very authentic and tasty. Great value for money and excellent service. I'll definitely be back!
Excellent again. We have been dining at Shalimar for more than 20 years and have always been welcomed like family. Meats and bread from the tandoor are great and we have branched the children into curries which are rich and full of flavour. Gagan is a most genial host and we will return again.
Tasty dinner. I had the tikka masala, my friend had the korma. Very, very tasty and I couldn't believe it was only 17 bucks each. Of course you have to have some naan (garlic) and pappadums.
A great night and cheerful hosts. I think they were first Indian restaurant in Australia? Or Victoria?
I'll be going again.
Great food ,and very friendly staff ,had a great time with friends ,strongly recommended ,
Well worth the wait. Super-friendly staff, happy to tweak the menu if you don't see exactly what you want.
Chicken Vindaloo and Goat Tindaloo were lovely, tender meat, hot and tasty, not salty like so many other curries we've had in the city.
Amazing! Some of the best Tandoori I've ever eaten! Amazing service at a great price as well! Only let down is a little small in layout
Its been 2 years since I visited Shalimar in Bay Road and nothing has changed in terms of menu or service. The Tandoori booth is still there and is worth pressing your nose up against if you have never seen a Tandoor oven. Food is filling and well spiced, The restaurant is still in the entertainment book and fairly standard Indian dishes and costs.
Ate here this evening after wanting a quick curry for dinner. Swift polite service and tasty, delicious food! Would visit again!
THUMBS UP FROM A TOUGH CRITIC. After travelling the world for many years and being disappointed by the lack of good Indian, I can honestly say that Shalimar has IMPRESSED this tough critic!
The tasty goodness of the Burra Kebab sent my tastebuds into Indian food HEAVEN after the first bite. All the curries I ordered could be modified to my liking without jepordising taste. The Prawns Masala blew me away with its different layers of flavours & the Chicken Pasanda was to die for! The service was fast and friendly and the ambience was cozy. The manager mentioned that Shalimar is in its 32nd year with the same chef cooking up these delicious delites......A true feat in this day n age !
A FANTASTIC DINING EXPERIENCE!!
This amazing find definately has my stamp of approval :)
Best Indian restaurant - only if you know what to order, I would just go in and let the waiter order everything for us without even looking at the menu...not worrying about the bill.... Best if you go in big groups to try all of the most popular dishes, mustard fish and tandoori cauliflower my favorites
Excellent but so-slow.. Had a lovely night here; except for service speed.
Great Indian food, extremely helpful manager and cheery wait-staff but the waiting was too long for 1st course and between courses. It wasn't a bust night.
Will try once more.
Excellent Take Away. We have just moved to Brighton and after a whole day of unpacking boxes, we needed a take away. The menu is very varied and we were able to pay over the phone with a credit card. A friendly chap arrived at the door 40 mins later. The food was devine. The lamb Korma was full of flavour and very rich in colour. The Palak Paneer was excellent. With a garlic naan and saffron rice for 2, we were very pleased with our meal and stuffed and we are looking forward to dining in next time once all the boxes are unpacked!
Definitely up there with the best Indian food I have had in Melbourne! Service was great and food was delicious.
Reminiscent of Mum's home cooking :). As a fellow Indian I was pleasantly surprised by the authenticity and the traditional flavours. When telling the waiter at how impressed we were, he mentioned that its a family run business with his mamma cooking these splendid delights. For the first time, I felt like I was eating a home cooked meal cooked by my family in India. Definately happy with this little find. Going back for more!!
Best Indian Food. The food at Shalimar is fantastic. My favourite dish is the butter chicken which is very authentic and made from fresh ingredients. Very good portion size. The service was also excellent, I'll definitely be coming back.
Scratching the 'Curry' itch.... I'd been craving curry over the Christmas break and so had the perfect excuse to head to Shalimar's when I read that they would open for 2011, early January... Their first night for the New Year and my curry itch appeased? I was hoping for a win-win situation.
The five of us sat down for entrees and mains, with the odd Mango Lassi to add to the mix. The service was prompt and accommodating - suggesting menu items and whether we really wanted a hot (HOT) curry (read - teenage son full of bravado...) My preference was for the Garlic chilli prawn curry, but we also had vegetarian and meat dishes on the table (including the aforementioned hot Beef Vindaloo). Steamed rice and plain roti complimented our curry choices.
And so, was my curry craving met? Yes, enjoyably so... Shalimar's is a great restaurant experience. The service, food and hospitality make this place a consistent family favourite.
Peter. Overall, this is Melbourne's best restaurant!
BEST INDIAN FOOD. GREAT Food. GREAT Service. GREAT People. CLEAN and tidy (A rarity for Indian Restaurants based on my experiences) AND... If you don't want to burn your bum, they can actually make your dish mild if you ask them to. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes real Indian Food but also to those of you who don't eat Indian food because it is too spicy/hot. Ask for VERY mild and you will actually get it! Well done guys - we'll be back very soon despite the 2 hour drive!
I love this place, I've been going here since I was little. It's awsome!
Flavours & Spice to die for. Wether you dine in at Shalimar, or get takeaway makes no difference.
The quality is the same ~ delicious, flavoursome, and a true delight.
Thanks guys ~ A++
