Had mother's day lunch here today. All of us enjoyed the food. They were all delicious particularly the shasimi spread, the steak, the pork katsu, the tempura and the fried chicken. The place was cosy and the service friendly.

A wide variety of fresh, delicious Japanese cuisine. Really enjoyed the meal. Akaba is a gem restaurant tucked away down a shopping alley in Brighton, offering a wide range of Japanese dishes from sushi, sashimi, tasty tataki, miso and more. Parking is available in the lot behind the restaurant.

This is definitely a local gem of a restaurant, and you'd never see it from the street as it's tucked away in a mini "arcade" type of passageway leading from a car park to Bay Street. However, seeing how busy they were the whole night - both with patrons and take out orders - it's clear that they are popular and now I see why. While they pack you in tight, and tables are small, and food service was slow, the food itself more than made up for it. The food here was DELICIOUS and whenever we are allowed to eat out again, I cannot wait to go back (will probably have to do a takeout order). Everything is fresh and delicious and well presented and simply yummy. I even had cooked tuna maki (usually raw tuna is used) and it was such a great flavour. Their Salmon Tataki is heavenly, and everything else that my companions ate looked good and they said was delicious too. Pricing ... Japanese isn't cheap. But overall, I think it's reasonably priced here and again, the food is totally worth it. I cannot wait to come back as it's now definitely one of my favourite Japanese restaurants around. (just also be prepared to search high and low for parking, depending when it is you visit).

We enjoyed our dinner. Staff were polite and friendly. The menu had a good range of options. The sashimi was good quality and the mains were very tasty with good quality ingredients. Would certainly go back. Thank you for a lovely meal!

It is a hidden Japanese restaurant with a pretty chill vibe. I was really amazed by the sophisticated tastes of gyu and salmon tataki, I believe they are worth the price for their size of portions. Although the unagi don and gyoza were just alright. I’ll go back there again to try other dishes if I’m in the area. Location wise: 3.6 stars Food: 4.3 stars Service: The staff were all smiley

I had a great time here, it was my first visit and I was more than happy with both the service and the food. If you are in the area and enjoy Japanese food then stop by and try it for yourself. I will definitely try this again next time I'm in the area. I rate 5/5 stars

Amazing Japanese food here, the staff at front desk served us very well. We felt welcomed in this restaurant, food was very detailed like an art, the taste was delicious.

I've been to Akaba twice so far, and my experiences there were nothing short of amazing. The food was fresh and delicious, the service was prompt and friendly, the restaurant was clean and welcoming, and the location is really accessible (right next to North Brighton station). I'll be coming back for more. Definitely worth trying it out if you haven't already!

I have been here previously for a wonderful
Japanese lunch and last night after seeing a move across the road with a group of friends - I decided to introduce this restaurant to them.
Seven of us rolled up and waited a short time for a table for our group to be set up.
Ordered a wide selection of dishes for our group which arrived having been freshly created by talented Japanese chefs.
The team here works hard to make you comfortable and warm on a cold Melbourne evening.
The locals enjoy this comfortable welcoming restaurant and one can see that all feel the love for the food which is full of flavours from freshly sourced products.
Do try the roasted rice tea ( full of nutty tastes ) wonderful with the meal.
Thank you for your work - you are appreciated.

You may easily find a Japanese restaurant like this anywhere in Melbourne. There is nothing special with Akaba but it does not mean this place is disappointing. We enjoyed above average, good quality of Japanese at affordable prices. Dengaku Nasu was rich and nice.

Tried the 8 course dinner at Akaba last night using a Groupon voucher. By far the best experience using a voucher that I have had till date. The staff were friendly and attentive but very respectful. The food came out fresh and the timing between the courses was perfect.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Will for sure be back.

If you want an addictive place to eat this is it. There is a camouflage about this place that delivers culinary surprises from left field. One of the few Japanese restaurants I've been to that serves up a single prawn as a meal.... cooked or raw ! This dish will swim out of this place so I would highly recommend you booking one.
Bring a French freind from Burgandy and its shut the gate.

used a Groupon voucher for dinner for two. Food was great. Rice on sushi was fresh. Entre were delicious. Service was prompt. Only disappointment was the main course of fried chicken. It was not up to our expectation of a main. Quite ordinary dish. Finished the dining experience with a matcha ice-cream which was tasty.

Delicious and fresh sushi and sashimi.
Highly recommended and will definitely return .. Friendly service and spacious dining area. Located in the walkway of the nail shop, near mothers milk 🍙🍘🍱

Sushi sashimi very fresh but slightly pricey. Tempura udon had tasty broth, not too heavy. Decent tempura. Teriyaki chicken had well balanced seasoning. The sauce was great and chicken cooked well.

One of the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. I personally feel that the food is of a high quality and is usually accompanied with a relatively good level of service. Would recommend the eye fillet steak (which is my favourite), prawn tempura (which tastes how tempura should taste) , the sushi platter (especially the one with the prawn sushi and raw trout) and the Barramundi is also very nice.
