Review Ah'loys Malaysian Restaurant - Brighton

Second visit yesterday. New owners here. We enjoyed our lunch both times very much. Good value for lunch and they are getting busier as people try them out. Good portion size and very tasty.

guess what, the foods are absolutely stunning, the curry here is amazing, the laksa tastes totally different from other restaurants, it has coconut flavour in the soup and I never found anywhere have this kinda flavour, their fried rice is unforgettable. If any of you planning travel to Malaysia for foods, my best advice is, cancel your ticket and come this place, trust me I won't get you wrong.

Super friendly and lovely staff, really nice looking restaurant and the curry Laksa is amazing. Definitely will be my regular go to. I couldn't post a photo of a before as it smelt so good.

Very busy on a Sat night but the food came out fast regardless. Everything was tasty. We especially loved the fish curry. Would come back for the comfort food!

Silky texture for Laksa. Good service for lunch and suffice portions to get full.

We've been coming here regularly since 1999 all the way back when Alan was the manager. In the last couple of years they sold the business to new owners and although the food quality went down slightly it was still a nice enough place to eat. After the treatment we recieved tonight I'm sad to say we will never return. The short, overweight lady who is the manager was extremely rude and had very little customer service skills to the point where one of the waiting staff was even embarrassed by her rudeness and apologised for it. It was very uncomfortable for everyone in the proximity. I understand people can have bad days but do not take it out on your loyal customers who did nothing to deserve it. Unbelievable.

The food is probably the blandest I’ve ever had for Asian food. The highlight dish was the spring rolls. Majorly over priced also, don’t think it’s worth the money personally.

We love this restaurant for eating in and takeway. The food is great, favourites are the beef rendang and chicken curry although we haven't actually come across a dish we didn't wholeheartedly enjoy! The service is lovely, always so friendly and very efficient. Ah'Loys is definitely one of our local favourites.

It's a good place, good food, good service, absoloutley nothing wrong with the place. Went back there a few times.recommended to try at least once.

Had the har mee. It was really diluted and the spice over topped the flavour - made my tummy really bad. Service was pretty bad also. They took awhile to take our order even though there was not many people in the restaurant. No wonder not many asians eat here. The waiting staff didn't even know what bean shoots were. Wouldn't come back.

Service was quick and friendly and for that I rated the restaurant a 2. Food was ordinary at best. Lamb curry appeared to be meat and boiled potatoes covered in the sauce rather than cooked in the sauce.Potatoes were still white and had not absorbed the colour of the curry sauce. The curry was rated a 2 chiilies dish but would be lucky to even be a one. Chicken sate - sauce was nice but again seemed to be like sauce added to pre cooked chicken. Food came out far too quickly to believe that it had been freshly cooked. Very disappointing meal. We shall not be eating there again.

A real winner, polite prompt service food mostly good , nothing that was bad just varied from amazing to okay. The roti chanai lamb was definitely the standout could eat this dish everyday of the week. Recommended

I'm well aware that food in the Brighton area is usually rated better than it is. If you are a Melbourne foodie this will not suffice! The prawn curry ($28) was not cooked as a dish, with ingredients added to a pre-prepared sauce which was more like a soup than a curry. The laksa was too salty yet somehow bland at the same time, and didn't taste freshly made.My friend and I both had slight stomach aches afterwards. I'll be heading to Prahran or Richmond next time despite the drive time.

Absolutely amazing, we were recommended to come here from the RAAF Williamtown intranet and we were not disappointed. The food is incredibly authentic - takes us back to the days of curry in bags and stained fingers from roti chanai. More importantly was the impeccable service and attentiveness, particularly with our 18 month old toddler, nothing was a problem. I can't recommend them more highly - try the roti, chicken curry and char kway teow, the best!!

Great food, good service. Nice interior.
Have been back several times.
Great to have a reasonably priced restaurant, with BYO, in an area replete with overpriced cafes.
Keep up the good work.

Service quality can vary, and the venue can be noisy. The food is always appetising and in quantity, featuring variations on Malaysian cuisine without being experimental. A favourite.

Delicious. Do yourself a favour and eat here!
Don't leave without trying the Roti. Food was so tasty, good options and great service. Will definitely be back again

Really enjoyed our meal here a lot. It was worth going to and I will be back again soon for the food. The prawn main was superb. Everyone else was jealous ! The calamari was superb. Worth a visit. We had a slight glitch with spice levels of a one chilli marked chicken dish that was so spicy it almost blew my friends head off ..... but the waiter was not very interested to check that perhaps the dish was not as listed. The fish curry wasn't as tasty as my husband would have liked but all based on his previous experience with curries, he thought maybe it could have packed more punch !

Thoroughly impressed with the quality of this place. We visited for a friend's birthday a few weeks ago and everyone enjoyed their food. Excellent, friendly service.

Such yummy food! The crispy honey pepper beef is a winner! Great service and good value! Nothing fancy, good for a casual dinner but a nice setting also.

Do yourself a favour...
Come to this restaurant.
Order the Belachan eggplant.
Order a Roti dish of your choice.
Order any other dishes (you can't go wrong really).
Enjoy!

Average, will give it another go!. We went to this place after watching a movie at palace cinema next door, and I have to say this place was the only place close by still open at 9pm on a Tuesday.
Stuffed tofu for entree was really nice, great combination of spices in it. Spring rolls were quite blunt, and a bit cold by the time they got to the table.
We ordered seafood laksa and chicken fried rice for main. Laksa was just spot on, perfect portion of seafood and great taste in the broth.
However the fried rice was actually burnt rice. Most of the rice was black and you couldn’t really find much chicken in it. Understand it was a late visit and judging by the number of the times the waitressed checked on whether we have finished our meals, I guess we didn’t get the best of it. Will give it another go soon, and surely will order the stuffed tofu and the laksa again.

At Ah'Loys on Bay st- you will find some authentic Malaysian at decent prices which is definitely a local secret. Always thriving with people, it's no wonder because we were seriously impressed.

Wow, can't believe howuch the food has changed here. I hadn't been here for 6 months until today and now I don't think I will ever go back. Not sure if there is new owners but the food was not digestible. The black pepper calamari tasted as bland as fried cardboard. I don't even think it was calamari in all that batter.

The halia beef was watery and salty. Roti bread was dry like toast.

Very disappointed.

Sadly, I found the char kway teow to be rather bland and oily and the dish had been westernised way too much. The chicken satay was bland, dry and the satay sauce was also greasy. I will stick to PapaRich next time.
Ven.ny01
Yum!. My favourite is the stuffed tofu with peanut sauce!

Previously had good food here but uninterested service. Tonight almost empty and they just laughed at me for asking for a table for one. They were really quite rude. Maybe not the place for quick local food anymore.

A family of 4 adults went on valentines day & we all enjoyed the meal... It was very tasty , authentic & vey affordable ! We also had enough for two lunches the next day

Now disappointing .... My family and I have been going to Ah Loys for 'years' for post-movies and family birthdays. However, it has gone downhill big time of late. Very disappointing - we'll have to find anor local!
The Goose
Great Local Malaysian. Went on a weeknight with a group of 8 - food was above expectations and enjoyed by all. Worked out at just over $20 per head and we didn't want for anything. No problem bringing cake for birthday - unpretentious local that is well worth trying
Zoe
Great food, service & price. Highly recommended Malaysian restaurant in bayside Brighton. Lemon grass chicken, tasty crunchy vegetables & beef rendang were all delicious. We will be back for another tasty meal soon.

Delicious!. Just back from a fabulous meal! Food delicious & service excellent. Beef in black bean was a standout. Definitely will be back soon
Brando The Pig
Overall food was ok, lamb curry is bland, should have gone the rendang. The shredded beef was equally as poor. The noodles had a nice char zing, but dish of the night was the eggplant. Worth another try, but feel this place deceptively has "cheap and cheerful" food except at more expensive prices
Birdy
YUM. The meat here is cooked perfectly , not too chewy and super fresh! Try something from their specialties menu!
Joe
More please!. Superb dining experience. Great food coupled with exceptional service. The curried lamb with roti is to die for. Generous portions throughout. Highly recommended for sharing food with friends.

Lamb Curry is amazing!

Haven't had a chicken Curry this good since the Malaya in Sydney.

Like it. I've been here a few times to eat in and also take away. the staff are really friendly and the place has a nice, fresh feel although not overly memorable. my usual dish is the laksa which, so far, has always been on point!

Used to be good. I used to really like this place, great service and great food. Its been a while since we had been and we really noticed the decline. The food was ordinary and service terrible. Four of us all received our dishes at different times and when asking the waiter where the last remaining dish was we were told that she was not sure as they were very busy. Keep on coming up with responses like that and producing food like that, they wont be busy for much longer!

Disappointing. Malaysian food sits in the top three cuisines for me - so when it's not good I really notice it. The food lacked finesse, authenticity, flavour and quality. To be fair, the service is v. good; prompt, friendly and Asian - as you would expect. It's a big barn of a place - so lacks something in decor as well. If you have not had good Malaysian food and are used to average Chinese this place would be fine.

Stay away from this place!!! it is a disgrace for food lovers!!!

Disappointing. Food was disappointing and the service was bad.The waiters are not interested to serve us. Won't be going back again.

Still good. Ah loys has long been a favourite of ours, but it seems to have gone down lately in both taste and portion size. Although not as amazing as it used to be, it's still good and definitely worth trying if you like Malaysian.
Lyn Main
Very poor service. Very disappointed, the staff were very slack and not at all interested in helping us. Food wasn't that spectacular either. No stars.

Value for money. Great spot to eat at before a movie.
Great portions, speedy and friendly service.
Food was great. We'll be back for more.

What can I say, my take away order was literally ready in 5 minutes. Best of all it tasted great. Thumbs up.

Great Malaysian food. We lived in Singapore for 5 years and this is very authentic. Favourites include beef rendang, roti chennai with chicken curry and for redlly gredt value, Nasi lemak.
Rodney - Villa D'Este
Close by and always good. If you like Malaysian/Indonesian this place is consistant. The favours are correct to the dishes as if you were "over there". I always over indulge.

Surprised at how good!. 8/10

Service - very good.

Ambiance - average, but still pleasant.

Food - absolutely great. Between 4 of us we ordered several dishes. They were all fresh, authentic and absolutely delicious. Serving portions were very generous and overall value was impressive given the quality of the food.

Highly recommended,

The Food Monster
