Review Bay Street Grill And Pasta - Brighton

This restaurant is in a great location, right next door to the Palace Brighton Bay Cinema, and has a great menu but unfortunately the food isn't that great for the prices charged. However, the staff is friendly and helpful. Decor wise, the place could do with an upgrade. Given it's location, the restaurant could do well if the it attended to the issues raised here.

I could not believe the rudeness that we were subjected to when we entered this restaurant last night. We were offered a table near the entrance to the toilets and kitchen of which declined. I asked the very unfriendly waitress for several other tables of which we were told were reserved. I could only see one reserved table sign, the others looked available. My husband and I left in disgust. I am not surprised that this restaurant has so many bad reviews. I am surprised that anyone goes there at all!!!!

Fairly reliable. Good for standards. Menu never changes except for seasonal fish. Handy for the cinema next door. I usually just go for dinner but today I lunched there. The chicken omelette was very good.

Disgusting Pizza. Ordered a Margherita and the base was store bought, soft and soggy. The topping was equivalent to 1kg of cheese...oily, tasteless, hardly any Napoli and missing any fresh basil. Learn how to make a prober pizza!!!! The chicken salad was ok but off cuts of breast, one of which was raw. The veal parmigana was actually nice, we actually had to order another one after the pizza disaster. The staff didn't acknowledge any suggestion. Seemed ignorant and arrogant. Good luck to them.

Perfect to take the weight off your feet and grab a coffee. Quick and friendly service. What i really liked was the waitress brought us each a glass of water before we ordered.

This place is absolutely feral! We waited about 15 minutes before we were served and when we were the service was terrible. The food took way too long to come out it was bland and forgettable. Would not recommend

Food needs some adjustments... coffee is fine

Today I ordered a quick lunch which was 2 poached eggs on toast. I was served 2 wholemeal slices of "toast" soaked in vinegar flavoured water from the eggs and a handful of dried up lettuce leaves. When I brought my dissatisfaction with this meal to the attention of the owner I was ignored. Safe your money and go elsewhere, I certainly will!

Limited menu and food was not very good. The salad had a light vinaigrette which was good and they used "real" chicken instead of processed chicken but mayonnaise was out of a jar and a bit mean with the avocado. They only offered white, wholegrain or brown bread, not much choice here. I suppose they only stay in business because they are next door to the cinemas and make their money from movie goers.

Service was disgusting. I ordered a steak well done and some one on our table ordered it rare with no sauce. They mixed them up and when we complained took them away and said they would fix it. Fix it they did they scrapped the sauce of the rare steak and put it on the well done steak. We noticed because I had cut into mine and the steak that should have no sauce you could see it had been scrapped off. To bad if you had a food allergy to the peppercorn sauce. We both complained and the owner blamed the waiter we were so disgusted left the other 4 members on our table and went next door at the pub and had a fantastic meal. NEVER AGAIN.

Decent outdoor atmosphere and cappuccino was fine. Unfortunately, the same could not be said about the owners. Very unprofessional and need to work on their customer service skills. I will not be coming back.

Ok, not great. Dropped in for a quick bite to eat one night. Asked the waiter for a glass of water with ice. I got no ice. Would be nice if they had a bottle/jug of water on the table rather than having to ask for a refill. Wait staff didn't know the menu very well. Ordered the vegi pizza. Decent size but was a bit soggy. For $11.9 it was just a cheap meal. Other items on the menu were more expensive. I'm not sure I would order them given the quality of the pizza. For an italian restaurant they should make their own pasta. The people that go there are very much an older generation.

Disappointed.. I just want to start by saying that I am not very critical of restaurants and this is my second review ever placed Simply because of how off put we were. We went out for a celebratory dinner on a Saturday night to this restaurant based on the reviews my girlfriend read. I dont know why the reviews are as good as they are. I have made the effort to write this because of my dissatisfaction.. One of the 'specials' for the night, a seafood pizza came out, it had so much cheese on it we were stunned it was the worst looking pizza we have ever seen. Even the people on the table next to us commented how awful, for the first few minutes we were not going to bring it up with the staff, but after attempting to scrape some cheese off to make it eatable it was so thick all the way through to the base dousing all other ingredients in a sticky artery clogging mess.. We subtly notified the friendly waitress and there was no worries about a swap for another to be cooked. This made us all a bit wary and look at the meals we each were eating. My meatballs had a little undercooked specks of meat and chewy pieces anand overall was nothing special that I couldnt have made at home. The curried scollops had thickly cut slimy various coloured/types of capsicum , not much of this was eaten because the taste was not appealing. The scollops themselves were nice and got picked out from the other stuff. The eye fillet was very nice a good cut of meat cooked well and looked appealing. . Our water was never offered to be refilled after being on the table from the beginning nor another bottle of wine, this was a blessing as our dining experience was tarnished and we were happy the leave, for such a prime location in Bay street Brighton and the reviews I had been told about i expected so much better

None. Really lousy helpings and poor attitude to diners

-----09 Nov, 2014-----

Inflexible and Empty for a reason. Went there for a lazy late lunch with my fiancée before a movie matinee. Both ordered the fried fish and chips. My fiancée loathes leaf salad so we asked for vegetables for her. The old maxim "the customer is always right" is one maxim this place has obviously not learned as we were told "no! If you want veggies you must have grilled fish." The owner even bellowed his reinforcement that this transgression would not be allowed, when the waiter informed us. Given that both dishes were the daily specials, surely asking for this substitution was not asking for the earth. When meals arrived, they were very disappointing. Fish was overdone and the crumbs just fell off in a lump when we tried to cut it. Helpings of chips were tragically tiny. Six sad little sorry chips hiding beneath the unwanted leaves... Given the price of potatoes is not exactly Beluga caviar, this seemed pretty ordinary. All in all very disappointing. Obviously relying too heavily on the cinema crowd, who must have low expectations given this poor attitude. My advice - there are much better options for a pre-movie meal than this place.

Traditional Warm Family Feel.. I love family owned and operated restaurants like this one; you can be sure they put love and care into everything they do.
Having a meal or just coffee and cake before catching a movie has been a delightful experience here for many years and I hope a lot more to come.
Sharon is spot on with her recommendation of this place although missed on another great family run daytime cafe in Bentleigh East.
The Father at Bay Street Grill & Pasta operates with integrity so we intend to recommend this place to all of our family and friends.

Liked it ! Thumbs up !. Awesome service ! Tasty dishes, and right next door to the cinema. We had time to relax before the movie, because we were right next door, so no need to rush.

Disappointed. Very average. Bread poor quality. Bruschetta had bottled olives and cheap feta. Not much effort to make nicer.

Excellent Restaurant. I've been to the Bay St Grill and pasta before and I have always found it to be very friendly, courteous and good service and good menu. It's run by a family and it is a great restaurant in Bay St. I highly recommend it. It is good also so close to the theatre in the street.

Regards,
Jeffrey.

Great Service, Great Food!. Ate their for New Years eve and it was fantastic! I had the risotto and the trifle and they were great. Prompt service, friendly service and good food - will be eating here again. Extremely convenient for the theatre next door too.

To Service or Not to Service ??. We got the second one !!! There 20 mins.....and not one person had come near us. We even had a bottle of wine on the table....but not a glass to be found.
Finally we had to ask for some drinks.....twice!! And then even had to ask for menus. The food.....to be fair...it was very good. 5 of us and no complaints at all. Now for the bill......yep you guessed it. 15 mins to get to us.....and yep we even had to request that twice. We arrived at the Rest' at 7.00 pm for a 9.00pm movie next door. We had no entree, just mains...and only just made the movie. The majority of customers were clearly from the Retirement Village around the corner......No issues there. But the Service staff here are obviously on their wait list !!!
What a shame for the Chef... great food, but we won't be experiencing that again.

Mmm ok not quite what I imagined when I booked a table . The age group started at 60 and ended about 90 ! I think they must have one basic sauce for for most dishes chunky vegatable .its not the place for a lively get together or if you are young .It felt a bit like a RSL .food was hot and staff we friendly , but would not go back .

Beautiful traditional, homemade pasta followed by the best tiramisu I've had since I was in Italy. The service was impeccable and prompt. Would come back again and again with friends :)

Great service. We really enjoyed this restaurant, and had an excellent service with delicious food. I had a mix grill and my partner had fish, it was wonderful. I will definitely go back with my family.

Ok for a quick feed before a movie.

Worst meal ever. Veal Scallopini was tough and swimming in what looked like gravy, risotto was tasteless and could not have been made with any stock. One of the most disappointing meals i have ever had. The plates were left on the table for half an hour after it was obvious no one wanted to eat any more. have beeen before and it was ok buy won't be returning.
