Review Chatz Fish N' Chips - Brighton

"Fresh Local Fish & Chips!!" I tried this place one evening and was blown away how good it is! I was greeted by a big smile from the owner and his wife who are absolute legends and it was very refreshing. Family owned fish n chips are the best! The food was extremely tasty and was served up fast. Prices are really reasonable for a area. They have a good variety of packs to choose from. There is easy parking nearby also and you can get there by train. The beach is a short drive down Martin st so its extremely convenient. I will definitely be returning to this place and will highly recommend it to others.

A wonderful experience for me. Lovely well-fried food, friendly staff. The sitting place was small but I never care.

The best fish and chips I’ve had in ages! Fish were tender and batter was crispy and delicious. Potato cakes were fluffy. Customer service was amazing too...so warm and friendly! Although we live an hour away, we will definitely be returning!

If the Michelin guide inspectors came to Australia, this place would receive a star! If you love quality at an incredible price point, without frills, this is the place. Let the Chef recommend how to best cook, whether grilled or fried - it depends on the produce. Have the prawns deep fried! They explode with a "pop" and simply melt. That textural dance of both firm and soft only perfectly cooked prawns can do. Chatz Chips are perfect. Perfect temperature, size, colour, seasoning & freshness. The restaurant & hospitality industry should absolutely celebrate Chatz in Brighton... I'm surprised there aren't queues around the corner on a Sunday lunch with that Saturday night party crowd from the southside of Melbourne nursing hangovers. Bookings not required. Simply walk in. Try everything. Chat to the Chef owner, he is like the Ronnie di Stasio for hot chips. Brilliant chat, candour and sincerity. Nevermind the decor. Who actually cares when the food & service are this good. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Haven't been there since the old owners. High quality fish n chips....potato cakes are home made and delectable. Chips Nek lev crunchy and soft inside. Fish was beautiful. Nice!

Location is everything, actually not necessarily, but in this case Chatz is right there on Martin St next door to the entry to Gardenvale train station! If that's not enough, Chatz is really a quality fish & chip shop, even offering fresh fish for cooking at home. We can only hope, by maintaining our custom there, that this shop keeps going for a long time to come.

Very good fish and chips but they have decided to cut any EFTPOS transactions and accept cash only to save on costs. Disappointed that they put cost savings before any health consideration during this C-19 times. Unfortunately we now cross the road to get F&C.

Food is gr8. Stopped going there though cause they always put too much spit on my food when they lick their fingers to grab paper and put your food right over it. You can now buy this thing called a wet sponge in a plate that you can use to wet fingers.

First time here and definitely last. Firstly, family pack on Zomato listed at under $36, in store was $48. Looked like a recent change too. Secondly, went to pay by card and was told cash only. Told them that I didn't have cash and, in the current environment preferred card. Woman taking order said they didn't take card. Pointed out the sign on the till stating minimum $10 order for card, was told there was an eftpos machine around the corner. Needless to say I walked out. Looks like this place is imposing a Covid tax on one hand and short changing the ATO on the other. Shameful when good businesses and people are suffering. Steer clear and support honest operators.

I've been coming here for a long time and the fish, burgers, snacks are always top quality we love the food and the staff are so friendly.

One stop for Fish & Chips, Souvlaki and Burgers right to entrance to City bound ramp, Gardenvale Station. I had a burger with cheese and beetroot, afternoon snack. The bun was fresh and did not fall apart as I got into it. Fillings were fresh and crisp. Beef patty was your 60\70 flatten one. Meat was soft, not salty. I did not have any sauce on it. No fancy sweet bun, etc straight up burger. Nice

Best fish and chips in gardenvale for sure amazing people always friendly, helpful and passionate and the food talks for its self the burgers are great to ( and ofcorse the chicken salt ) x

Had a good snack pack for $6.50 that had 2 dim sims and 2 potato cakes. Added a piece of grilled fish, which was buttery, delicious, satisfying. Felt like a good deal.

There's no question that Chatz is not the same fish and chip shop it used to be. New owners now for at least 6 months seem to be making hard work of things. Previously family run by Greeks I went there several times not to be disappointed. Now run by Chinese, I've been there several times further, and to be honest, I'm still not disappointed.<br/><br/>Just because things are not exactly the same, doesn't deserve the 1.0 reviews. The fish and chips remain better than I've had in a lot of places. The batter has been crispy and flaky and the fish very fresh. They could do a little better on the chips since recently they've all been no more than 2 inches long, but we are certainly not talking "bad food". <br/><br/>Of course, I never go during their busy period, so I can't speak for messed up orders or staffing or cleanliness at that time, but at 4pm Saturday, the ace looked fine, albeit with one person taking orders and cooking. Maybe they just need a bit more help and a bit of a chance from locals. <br/><br/>I'll continue to eat here when I'm in the area. There's tables out the front for a pleasant meal curbside in a beautiful part of Melbourne. What's not to love! <br/>

What a dud. First time I have ever been, and will be the last. Dirty glass display fridges, bare hands to pick up all the raw seafood items, filthy chux wipe after handling raw fish. I saw in the space of ten minutes, five people's orders stuffed up! Apparently this used to be the best place to go for fish n chips... not anymore. I ate a bite of each item after waiting 20 minutes. Forgot my grilled fish, rushed it through dropping the utensil on the floor in the process - not sure where it went after that. This place has been under new management since the beginning of this year. The food is not as good as it use to be. Such a shame. It's difficult to find a good fish and chips shop these days.

Chatz used to be my place to go for fish ' n chips in Brighton/Gardenvale.  Just picked up my phoned order for 3 pieces of whiting and salad to be told it was $40.50!  What?  Then I get home and find I have 6 pieces of Whiting.  Ring to find out why, and am told when ordering a "piece" it means a "serve which means 2 pieces" Why wasn't I told that when I ordered!  Salads soggy and tasteless.  Not going back.  Be warned.  Not what it used to be.

Chatz used to be my favourite fish 'n chip place to go, however the other day I was very disappointed, as the fish had been frozen so what I received was a piece of wet, soggy, flavourless fish! I won't be going back there.

My very favourite fish & chippery! The chips are always amazing and the fish succulent. Fresh salads, a great selection of fresh fish and seafood and not forgetting the fabulous burgers as well!

Buy my fresh fish here to take home very often. They have a great range. Tuna, salmon , flathead, whiting and more. It's always fresh and lovely. I appreciate having a local fish shop, there aren't many left these days. Chatz is a family run business, always friendly and helpful. I've been buying there for years and never had a bad piece of fish. It's always fresh and fabulous.

I like it. I get fish and chips here just about every Friday. Service is very friendly, and courteous. Food is fresh and very well cooked. The place seems to be run by a bunch of twenty something guys, who are doing a brilliant job!

Grease fest!! Expensive ($18 for 2 fish and half chips, never trust a take away which doesn't display fish prices), very slow service (25 mins) even though it wasn't busy, and everything was under/not seasoned (two other customers came back in while we were waiting and asked for salt). I know fish and chips aren't health food, but the amount of oil pooling in the bottom of the tray and dripping from the fish was appalling. Never again.

THE BEST. I regularly go here for lunch/ dinner with my girlfriend. We both love it, amazing fish, chips, potato cakes, and very generous serves.<br/>The burgers are fantastic as well.<br/>Love the service, the staff are always friendly and start conversation with us.<br/>Very pleased regular, will definitely return. keep up the good stuff Chatz!

Extra pieces given generously but.... Bought some fried flake and other bits 3rd April, all good except as two people bit into flake both tasted the amonia taste ( like breathing in bleach) rang and was told that wasn't possible, was offered a refund or other fish , but unable to get back to shop. My understanding is that this occurs when fish is not fresh - is part of decomposition - so Chatz- just hoping your fish is fresh daily as you say.<br/>Its true that extra bits were generously added to the order.

Great fish and chips shop. friendly people and they always throw in extra, well seasoned hot fish and chips every time. awesome burgers as well

Just orded some food watched the lady handle my food without gloves then put her finger in the sauce bottle and wiped it on my burger then proceeded to lick her fingers and touch my burger again never coming back here again

Amazing!!!!. It was a lovely sunny day when i decided to try out this magnificent fish & chippery, the food was exquisite and the staff were extremely friendly and not to mention that attractive young lad Manny!!<br/><br/>Over all i would rate chatz 10/10 i will be back again!!

Would have to be one of the best Fish 'n Chippery's around - excellent quality, fresh fish, super tender calamari great tasting chips ....nothing greasy about this meal......overall 10/10!!

My favorite fish & chip shop in Melbourne!!! The seafood is always wonderfully fresh. The gourmet salads are fantastic, especially the beetroot. The family that owns the business are lovely people, and they definitely seem to take a lot of pride in their business.

New ownership has really lifted the service. Chips and fish could not be any better and they always throw in extra! My number one fish n chips joint
