beside the price, the food taste alright, may need to come back again to try the ramen dine in, that would defiantly taste the different between take away & served it hot. the salmon roll was alright, size was fine. the store were well styled. love it

Great quality food and reasonably fast service. Broader selection than the usual Japanese places. Lovely sitting outside and watching the passing crowds.

I was shocked at the $5 sushi price and happily surprised with the think slab of tuna received Overall nothing overly special but nothing to complain on $19 poke bowl to be half full.
Wendy Cooper
Simply terrible. The inattentive cashier served the customer after me and I was charged more than the marked price. It also took nearly 5 minutes to prepare one inari that didn’t taste any better than a pre-made one. Definitely not worth a bother.

It was nice, and quickish service, BUT $19 for poke is insane, for that price I was expecting something great but to feel like I was hungry after eating is very dissapointing. Ffs guys - just add more ingredients if you are charging $19 for a small bowl. Not going back. Don't recommend.

$19 for a poke bowl we expected something much better. The quantity was small. Sushi rolls didn’t have much filling & are $5 I’ve had better

Nice easy place for a nice good fix of comforting Japanese ramen. Especially so on a cold winter day! Definitely going into my list of favourites!

Sorry guys, the taste was great but the fish wasn’t bite-able and the wrap was too.

Hiro sushi bar, while not terrible food by any means,is way over priced and very much Japanese food with a bland Melbourne lean. For that kind of price you should expect high quality, highly authentic or unique fusion. It is none of those.

Such yum and high quality food. The sushi rolls were $5 each which was pricy however, they were made fresh, were HUGE and tasted amazing. I highly recommend this place!

Takeaway was a disappointment and overlly priced compared to other sushi places - only difference is they make rolls bigger but doesnt mean you'd get one roll for lunch. Soft crabshell was cold and soggy :*( but I guess you cant help it if its not fried everytime you order

DO NOT EAT HERE!! COCKROACH almost fell into my food :(<br/><br/>This place may look nice and fancy from the outside but it's quite dirty in the inside.<br/><br/>If you're looking for legit Japanese food then this is not the place! The food is overcooked and is not fresh.<br/><br/>Don't order the pack of sushi because the rice and fish is old.<br/><br/>By the way..did I mention how dirty this place is? When I was eating inside there was flies everywhere, crawling on the table and oh yes A COCKROACH FELL FROM THE CEILING and almost into my food. We told the waitress and even she didn't want to catch it! It was disgusting!<br/><br/>She ended up giving us a loyalty card but no way would I eat there again knowing how dirty and unsanitary that place is!!<br/><br/>Good service, terrible food and environment.

I’ve visited Hiro multiple times and I’m pleasantly impressed every time. I highly recommend the Gyoza, prawn or pork. I also recommend the ginger chicken roll or any of the prawn rolls. I’ll be returning!

i have a long history of Chicken Katsu. I have traveled to different states to enjoy these dishes. however. This Chicken Katsu was served room temperature at best with low portions of food. $16.50 and 25 minutes for 4 pieces of chicken, terrible seasoning/sauce. and poorly cooked rice.<br/>do not recommend trying this recipe or this restaurant

I order the soup and fried rice with beef. The taste is good, I think the fried rice need put less oil. Because the taste is a little bit heavy. But I still enjoy it.

Just dropped by for take away. Food was just ok. A bit salty for the deep fried prawn and chicken. It ways too expensive compared to the portion and quality. I do not think I would return.

The worst poke bowl in Melbourne: pathetic portion size, no sauce or flavour and the sashimi was served room temperature. Repulsed. The staff were flustered and openly discussing how they were running out of ingredients. Very unprofessional.

Most salty and terrible ramen I ever had. <br/>Once is enough!<br/>Will never eat here again ever. <br/>The price is expensive but importantly the food was no good.

Casual dining, best for 2 people. Quick and healthy meals. Friendly staff. The food is fresh and really nice!! Been back a few times already

I orders hiro sushi via uber eats, big mistake. I paid $16 for the sashimi pack and received a fun size portion of what was expected. I couldn't really judge the taste as the portion was so small.

I took away some sushi. The sashimi on rice were not fresh and the sushi were expensive than other shop. Sorry, but I don't have any reason to come back this shop...

I think this place deserves more then it's rated. The food is nice, good portions and my order was quick. The set up isn't great with the seating hidden off to the side but service was fine. It's not going to win any awards and it is a bit pricey but I still enjoyed the food overall.

Came here on a Tuesday. Ramen not available, Poke rice not available. Ordered katsudon, egg is overcooked. Yakisoba, katsu curry, seaweed salad all bland. How can you messed up seaweed salad? If you have money to pay for the food, go somewhere else

The ramen broth is a bit too salty but the noddles tast good. The fresh coconut is great and I order it almost every time I went here. The octopus ball is good but the waiting time is a bit long. My favourite is the chicken curry with rice. Nice curry and tendered chicken. Overall is good but it is a bit pricy. Will come back but maybe not too often.<br/><br/><br/>The big disadvantage is the speed . Took 20mins to have a ramen done ! And there are only a few customers in the store...

Eh, my meal here was ok but I had a hard time choosing something appealing and not overpriced. There's a lot of chicken or fish options but I think you'd struggle if you were vegetarian or vegan. Layout of the place is terrible- there's a tiny narrow corridor which a staff member stands in to block you from entering the back part of the restaurant, seemingly wanting to encourage everyone to simply have their meal as takeout. Staff seemed flustered and gave us a buzzer to pick up our meal when ready but then when we went to pick it up the staff got our meal for us since the space was so small and unworkable. They really need to think that space through! Food was average, would not eat here again in a hurry.

Cute little Japanese store on Brighton's busy main street. Very big portions, but a bit expensive.<br/><br/>Find me on Instagram @Melbourne_Explorer.

Surprised at the current low rating of this place. While it's a little pricey, the quality of the food is terrific! I generally stick to the hand rolls which I rate the best in Melbourne. Ginger chicken brown rice, soft crab shell, hiro special, tuna...it's all good. Two of these hand rolls at $5 a pop is a better meal than getting 3-4 hand rolls at your stock standard sushi places. I've also had the katsu chicken which is really nice, as is the eggplant and tofu sweet miso salad. I could eat that by the bucket full. Their slaw is also quite yummy.

Popped in for some quick sushi and seaweed salad for lunch and was not impressed. We walked in and weren't greeted by the staff member standing there. So we sort of stood there awkwardly and had a look in the display cases. We went over to order and then were handed a beeper... But when we sat down, they delivered the food anyway... What was the beeper for then?<br/>Service, food and atmosphere all weren't great. Wouldn't return.

Shocked to find The Pantry empire has taken over Hiro, appears to be the same Japanese chef (old owner). Whats next, Humble House next door. Prices definitely are marked up. My crumbed chicken with egg and rice was disappointing compared to the same dish at other restaurants. Put this way, will not return.

Great for takeaway Japanese! I regularly have the Vegetarian Rice Paper rolls, $10 for 2 is quite steep, but they are very big and delicious! I don't think I would come here to eat in, as limited seating available.

Only come here for a desperate take out with no expectations, otherwise you will be disappointed....<br/>We dined in. The ramen came out lukewarm, which is a sin! Broth was thin. Portion size was ok but food quality wasn't. The katsu was crispy but very under-seasoned. Hate their use of disposable cutlery. No water. Their menu on Zomato is just a sample. There are more items but prices are also higher. <br/>Just this once!

I got a small salad woth 2 different sushis. Nothing was delicious and didnt make me happy. Couldnt finish anything. Long sushis are really hard to eat.

----- 06 November, 2015 -----<br/><br/>First time visit for me (although been past many times) and this shop is tiny, no tables or chairs inside, just a few stools and tables outside and of course the day we decided to order some food it was cold with a light rain!<br/><br/>They’ve got a large display counter with all their goodies on display and whilst I was a little surprised at the sushi roll and rice paper roll prices, they’re larger than what you would normally expect and were in the end really worth it. My softshell crab rolls were especially good and we’re well made as were the other items we ordered. Really worth a visit for a quick bite on the run or take back home or office but it does get busy – and to our surprise they hand out the beepers to call you when your order is ready.

I've tried their hand roll. Yes it's more expensive, but they're enormous! I had one for lunch and for me it was enough for at least 3-4 hours. It's great value and they're delicious! However, I've also tried their Japanese chicken curry. It was just a 100% disappointment.... Such a shame I didn't go for hand roll....

I'll be honest...I kind of avoided this place after seeing that they charge $4.50 for a hand roll. But finally gave in and have to say, the quality is actually pretty outstanding. I have only had the hand rollls (hiro special, chicken teriyaki, soft shell crab), but they are fresh, huge, and quite a delight. Other food, while a bit pricey, all looks pretty tasty. I think they got the chef back who used to run this joint years ago.

Disappointed. I had lunch here with a friend a few weeks back. I was really looking forward to trying Hiro because Royal Bros, Pantry's hole-in-the-wall burger shop, is fantastic. To be fair, I didn't try the sushi at Hiro, which looked okay but was at least $1.00 more per hand roll than anywhere else (which is fine if it's actually $1.00 better than anywhere else). I ordered the Ginger Chicken with a side of Japanese coleslaw. Although tasty, the chicken was very greasy and I felt ill after eating it. The coleslaw already looked tired and unappetising when it arrived and it tasted much the same (stale), and it was not a good accompaniment for the greasy chicken as it had a mayonnaise-style dressing. (Perhaps I might have enjoyed a different salad more. I was expecting a more refreshing salad and I definitely wasn't expecting the chicken to be greasy.) My friend had Katsu Chicken, again with Japanese coleslaw, but she said hers was greasy too and she also felt unwell after eating. This was all very disappointing given the Pantry's usual excellent standard. I had to wonder: have they sub-let this side of the business? I am not inclined to try Hiro again.

Large sushi rolls, lots of rice with not a lot of filling and flavour. Overpriced as well.
