Review Wooden Horse Restaurant & Bar - Brisbane

Sandy
My sister told me about the mushroom steak that they had on their plant menu and I really wanted to try it. I finally got to go and it was delicious. The mushroom steak had a woody umami flavour mixed with a smokey flavour. The pan con tomate was a bit sour for my liking. If they toned down the sourness on the sauce that they used it would have hit the spot. We also had their non alcoholic drinks and they really complemented our meals. The desserts were also delicious. We got both the peanut butter pudding and the autumn crumble. I was very impressed with the peanut butter pudding as I'm not a big fan of peanuts. But they were delectable. I would love to come back here again to try their other dishes on their plant based menu.

We had an amazing time at the Wooden Horse. I know you are supposed to post pictures of the food before you eat it but it was so good that we ate the mains before I remembered to take the photograph.. I had the crumbed pork chop burnt pear sauce.and it was so delicious. The bread for starters was amazing as was the homemade rhubarb pies for dessert. We had fantastic and friendly service. It was great food in a vibrant restaurant. I would highly recommend it!

Staff were friendly, but not helpful. I went to this restaurant expecting to have a good time. First of all, the main meals took like an hour to have it. They excuse themselves that they were busy and had a lot of meals to make that night which is disrespectful to say that without an apology. Then, this meal was served in a rush, it was cold, tasteless pricey and nothing special on it. I had the worst experience. Luckily, I complain, then they realised it was their fault therefore they didn’t make me to pay for the drinks and a snack or starter I already had. What happened? I don’t know! But they need to care more about service, cooking an customers.

Absolutely yum! After checking their website and seeing a small menu with a focus on local produce and quality ingredients, we were keen to try Wooden Horse. Staff were lovely. Our waiter was friendly, professional and knew the menu. The room was beautiful, intimate and we loved the lighting. But it always comes down to the food. We ended up with an all veg selection because everything on that page looked interesting. And that decision did not disappoint. The zucchini flower "pie", blending the delicacy of zucchini flower with the flavours of a good old fashioned pie 'n' peas was a stroke of genius. Well done chef! And everyone should do themselves a favour and try the crumbed Lions mane... We'll be back for more. 😊

Really great experience. All of the food is original and very well plated. I chose the plant based menu, and it delivered well. Props to the owner of the Vegan Butcher cookbook. Staff are polite and helpful when explaining menu. Recommend for a vegan meal, especially the vegan steak

The main meals are to die for. Not really a big fan of entree but overall everything is good. Nice service! They looked us after well 😊

Beautiful food, and lovely service. Ambiance was great (although a bit cold, but it was a cold night). I would give this restaurant 5/5 but the price brought down my rating. $37 for a couple of mushrooms (which I will admit were super, super tasty!!) and some chips and some gravy, was too much for me to be able to give this restaurant 5/5. I don't know, maybe it takes the chef hours to make those mushrooms, but seemed extremely over priced to me.

Very impressed with all the food we ordered at the wooden horse. Friendly staff, great menu, relaxed atmosphere, I would definitely recommend. Only downside, I was too full to try the dessert... Guess I'll have to come back!

Well, it's a while since I've done a restaurant review. Seemed like a good night to do it. Flew in from Sydney, dumped luggage. Starving. Only some bacon, an egg and some no doubt rather damp n soggy lettuce in the fridge. Take far too long at this time of night to thaw out any of the lovely meat in the freezer. Solution: dinner out treat. Decided Wooden Horse would have something delicious for me. So, jumped in the car and whizzed up to Eagle Junction. All tables booked (sigh) so they sat me at the bar table - no worries on my end, came for the food not the chair. Next thing I know, there's a cancellation so got a nice table just for me. Tonight is steak night - gathered it's a new thing. Picked out the rump for a couple of reasons: 1. It's one of the truly tastiest cuts. 2. It was the only one of the three cuts that was organic and totally (apparently) grass fed (the others were either wholly or finished grain-fed). The steak was absolutely delicious: beautifully tender and beautifully cooked - medium rare all through just perfectly done. There's a choice of sides included. Chose the wilted fried greens (broccolini and kale) and the most wonderful smoked potato purée (I'm already thinking of how I could replicate that one in the Thermomix with my new, yet-to-be-used smoke gun), all drizzled with a veal marrow jus. Just delicious. Perfectly seasoned - I like a bit of salt but no addition necessary, which is the sign of a chef that really understands seasoning. Washed it down with a very nice Rioja which really complemented the meal - a small but good selection of wines to suit all choices, a suitable number available by the glass. Had tossed up having an entrée. For someone who's rather partial to quackery, it was hard to resist the duck liver parfait, but the dessert menu was very attractive so thought I'd skip the entree and maybe spoil myself with a dessert. Chose the strawberries and cream dessert. Sounds quite ordinary doesn't it. The description should've said told you it wouldn't be: "local strawberries, meander valley clotted cream (memories of clotted cream fudge and scones with jam and clotted cream in Britain creeping in here), campfire meringue, dark balsamic, basil (these as tiny micro-basil sprigs), rosé". The description in no way prepared me for the vision of delight, the gorgeous concoction of ethereal wonder that floated its way onto my table. It was sensational. I'm sure the other diners could hear my little grunts and groans of ecstasy. It was extraordinary. So, if you go to eat at this lovely restaurant, do yourself a favour and make sure you have a dessert. Will try the la passionè next time which sounds like a chocolate passionfruit dream. This restaurant does most if not all gluten-free (GF substitutions/ options available). A wonderful dining experience.

Finally got a chance to try this local joint and took the rellies for steak night last week. Very impressed! The platter/share board with the duck pate was supurb Great service (new waitress that just moved from Melbourne. Great personality, professional and quality banter) Good homely feel and incredible food and cocktails. The only thing I was dissapointed in was the bloody Mary's didn't come out with the oyster garnish as your instagram promised. It was the cherry on top when it was in the hat of which restaurant to go to that night. However it didn't stop me ordering 2 more after the initial dissapointment. The waitress explained you ran out the night before. Shit happens. Good call on the BYO also Keep up the awesome work, we will be back :)

Visited this lovely place recently. Great atmosphere and happy staff (which is hard to find these days!) Highly recommend and will return for sure. Thank you wooden horse for a great experience :)

Just finished lunch there and we couldn't be happier. The pizza was amazing and everyone at the table seemed to really enjoy everything they got. Service was fantastic and very attentive. We will absolutely return and recommend to people

Amazing food! We had the mushroom gnocchi, duck, arancini balls, squid and the lemon tart! Staff were very professional and friendly. We will be back x

The food was fantastic but the majority of the floor staff where very inexperienced. Wine is very over priced for the amount you get in your glass. We where seated in an area that was up a few stairs and felt forgotten about a little. Our 4 star rating is for the food only.

Their pizza is amazing! Highly recommend the Drunken Pig and the Black Sheep. The drill pickle sounds odd, but give it a try; it balances out the other flavors nicely.

Susie and I have dined at Wooden Horse a number of times since they first opened. Returned again tonight and once again we found the whole dining experience amazing. Having recently returned from a U.K. Holiday - where we went to a number of well known Michelin starred establishments - we feel justified to rate the Wooden Horse food in that class. If Wooden Horse was competing, Michelin points would be lost probably only because the wait staff aren't decked out in suits and gush about the food instead of whispering in dulcet tones. Their pizzas are also great.

OMG! Absolutely the best steak in forever:) the service is 100% and the food was beyond perfect! It was my first visit after following you on Facebook and I'll be back regularly. Tonight was my birthday. Thank you so much. Your waiter was beyond Silver Service!! GOLD! thank you

Perfect food and service. We went in for the $15 pizza and byo wine night and had the best time.

2nd time here, and still love the funky menu. All food was delicious, from the lamb pizza, to the roo steak! Lovley attentive and friendly waiter all served in a stylish setting. Wine expensive but good quality

Thank you guys for a great night out! Being in the industry we hardly get out for dinner so this was a big deal and we thoroughly enjoyed our Dinner! Highly recommend!

Just stumbled across Wooden Horse today when other plans fell through, what luck!! THE best pizza we’ve had in Brisbane and the barramundi was heavenly. We’re already planning our next trip back.

I have been wanting to come to this place ever since the announced they were doing breakfast. After being a huge fan of their dinner menu (and the burger 🤤) I knew I was in for a treat…Lets do it. Drinks: aka, all the coffee. Iced Long Black - my go to and always the best way to wake up to start the day.

My partner and I dined at Wooden Horse recently and our first impressions were great: a warm atmosphere and attentive service.

When it came time to order, it was a struggle to flag down a waiter.

After this, sadly, the only highlight was a nice Margaret River Cab Sav.

One of the restaurant's signature steaks, a sous vide flank, was chewy and the dish lacked oomph, overall.

Amazing food, just so sublime. We had the mushroom pizza, seafood stew, and the little one enjoyed the pulled lamb with veges. Great service and location too. Couldn't fault the place. We love it, and we will definitely go again.

Very impressive. Somebody with a real understanding of flavours is cooking here. Steak marinaded in miso tender and perfectly cooked. Linguine marinara with a subtle fennel note. An excellent wine and craft beer drinks list. All at quite reasonable prices.

We went to wooden horse for a special occasion recently. We LOVED the place - amazing layout and darker lighting. The food is all gourmet but affordable. Service was great too

Food is of exceptional quality, you can tell the chef & staff really care. This is the second time I have been here & both times its 5/5. Highly recommended. PS Try the Sergeant Peppers Cocktail.

Hats off to the chefs & staff for delivering an outstanding dining experience. Seasonal menu, several mainstays & an ever interesting wine list topped with great service makes this place an enjoyable experience every single time.

Had dinner last Saturday at this renowned restaurant. Set-up is matching with the name with wooden furniture that makes a comfortable feeling for diners enjoying their meals. Service is extraordinary sincere and friendly. Although the manager introduced some daily special to us, we still like to follow their menu. Ordered the charcuterie with additional duck parfait to share for entrée then have a change to order The Drunken Pig Brick Oven Pizza because its interesting name. In addition, we ordered two side dishes of Pork Scratchings and Char Grilled Market Greens. The Charcuterie broad was spectacular with quality aged jamon, wild boar sausage, varieties of pickles and the additional duck parfait added lots of marks. Next came the pork scratchings for us to go with our drinks while we were waiting for the pizza. The pork scratchings is a-must order side dish. Same feeling as crackling but not as hard. Pizza then came to the table which was topped with some pickles, bacon, pork belly and buffalo mozzarella. The drunken name came from the spicy bourbon BBQ sauce, which was not that alcoholic taste, however, the pizza was still above average. The char grilled market greens side dish gained back a lot of marks. Overall dining experience was decent. The only advice is that if they can reduce the background music and make it softer, then the vibe would be perfect.

Had an amazing meal here with a friend late last year. The service was great, all the courses were delicious and the drinks were nice too!
Had the oysters to start and they were the best I've ever had. The duck main was also excellent.
Really excited to go back hopefully sometime soon!

Wooden Horse is lovely. The restaurant itself made me feel like I could be somewhere else, it was so calming and the staff were very polite and helpful. The menu and food itself was fantastic, and for what we considered to be a more upmarket place, it was reasonably priced. Make sure you leave room for the panna cotta - it's so worth it!

This place is great - now you can get a fantastic upmarket restaurant meal without hiking all the way in to the city. The place itself has a quirky rustic feel inside the converted building, all the way down to how the menus are presented in old hard back books.

The food has always been amazing, and I haven't had a bad wine off the list yet. I am keen to try the pizzas takeaway next. 10/10 would recommend this to anyone looking for a great meal that live in the suburbs - and even to those who don't!

This place is awesome, these boys do an amazing job .. went for dinner a little while back.. hand made gnocchi continues to make my mouth water when I think of it.. drunken pig pizza awesome.. great range of alcoholic beverages.. very progressive in the industry without being pretentious.. one of my faves.. must go back again soon! Thanks for being out there in this big bad world of cowboys and biscuit markers 🐝

Went here for dinner on Friday night after work. This place is a very nice old Queenslander that's been converted into a restaurant. The inside is amazing and the food was delicious and served timely. Would definitely recommend and go go back.

Everything was beautiful - food service drinks although it would be great to have a bigger area to have drinks while waiting for your table.

Amazing setting . Modern and sleek but still has the beautiful vibe of the old butcher. Simple menu with classic flavour combinations. Had the pork belly with an amazing carrot purée. Will be back

Exceptional. Went there for Valentines Day and the mixed entree share plates were a treat. The Pork Belly and Steak are fantastic. Dessert fans, do yourself a favour.
Came after work for their first night of the new menu. Really great food I was very impressed. This is on par with any meal that I have had at inner city restaurants. The meals came out so quickly. We had the pizza and the meat board and both were really good. Great new Zealand wine to top it off!

Living so close we decided to try the takeaway pizza option from the restaurant and wow what a experience we ordered the flat garlic bread and the drunken pig pizza. The garlic bread was fantastic, cheesy with real garlic and full of flavor, it was a little oily but that is a small critism, the pizza was great as well pieces of well cooked pork belly with slices of pickle, cheese and a smoky bbq sauce just made this pizza amazing. The combo of flavors may not sound appealing but it works. Having done a initial dining experience via a takeaway pizza the next time we will be dining in and eating from a exciting menu.

I have been to this fabulous restaurant 4 times and loved the menu and service each and every time and so thought I should take the time to write a review so other people could enjoy this chic restaurant with an imaginative menu, great wine list, superb wine list and even better chefs . Dane and Morgan are on a winning formula here- there attention to detail is great and every time I have been there we have had a great time. Would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone- it is reasonably priced, a great location and a fabulous eating experience- well done guys!!!! I will keep coming back.

We went here on a busy Saturday night last weekend where the place was packed out. I agree with others that is can be very noisy but otherwise the service was impeccable and the food delicious! We got the slow roast pork belly and the eye fillet, both of which were cooked perfectly, especially the crispy pork belly! The Panna cotta for dessert was nice but not amazing, and the strawberry fields forever cocktail was could have been Better, won't be ordering that again. Otherwise the food was overall fantastic, great service and location and beautiful decor. It's soon to be our new local for a beautiful dinner.

Hosted an event at this fabulous restaurant yesterday. The food was outstanding - pork belly which we believe is a staple menu item was the best I have ever had. And the salt and pepper squid was sublime. The selection of wines on offer was a real delight and shows a commitment to a great
All round experience - my pick here is rosy red rose - slight fruit and a dry finish perfect for an afternoon canapé lunch. For lunch, dinner or your next work function this place is awesome.

My husband & I dined at Wooden Horse on a Sunday night. We shared the wooden meat board and BBQ baby squid. They were so wonderful! The cured meats were superb. I had the pumpkin and feta ravioli, which was sweetened by the candied walnuts and I absolutely loved every last bite! You can tell how much effort goes into that dish. My husband has the chicken, BEAUTIFUL gnocchi, and truffle sauce completes the dish! We shared the black Forrest dessert and the cheese board. Stuffed and satisfied, I couldn't fault a single thing. Very attentive and friendly staff, gorgeous space, can't wait to go again!! 💯

Great new restaurant for Brisbane! Beautifully presented food and equally as delicious. Would highly recommend the lamb shanks and panna cotta. Great service and atmosphere and excellent value for money. Ideal for a date night or a group. Would love to try their pizzas, as they looked delicious. Will definitely be back!
