Enjoyed the tasting menu with my wife and two very close friends ... the staff were welcoming and attentive throughout the evening, without being intrusive; each course was described in just enough detail; the food met all our expectations in terms of creativity and taste; the piano music was appropriate without being intrusive; and the attic as a dining venue had a feeling of 'somewhere other than downtown brisvegas' ... really pleased we found this venue.
Great food, great staff, great atmosphere. Thank you. We celebrated our 45th anniversary and they were kind enough to give us a card and a small bottle of bubbly. Lovely gesture. Thank you for a wonderful memory.

Admittedly when my mains (beef rib) arrived, I was visually underwhelmed, but once I took the first bite, it was absolutely heavenly. The flavours were impeccable, especially paired with the most amazing tasting side of brussel sprouts, washed down with an amazing bottle of Lovers Block Pinot Gris, and finished off with the Malt Brownie. The dining experience, service, beautiful historic building, and live pianist made for a great Birthday Dinner - Now a favourite and will certainly be back.

We had the "Feed Me" option, which was a very good experience of the delicious and innovative meal options that Malt Dining offered. No faults.
Service was friendly and efficient. Smart casual ambience with a lovely ambience for special intimate occasions. Reasonable prices for the quality and quantity.
Overall, an impeccable dining experience. Highly recommend.

Entree’ - Scallion Crab on Corn tostados with kimchi and stuffs - Such a delicious start for our dinner - So much flavours and amazing textures!!
Lamb ribs - The best Lamb ribs we have ever tried with an amazing sauce and greens - great balance.
XO noodles with king prawns - The prawns itself was so perfectly cooked but the noodles was a bit too citrusy and we didn’t really feel the kick of XO flavour.
Side - Potatoes with Truffle mayo - One of the most delicious potatoes we have tried - so great with flavours and perfectly cooked with consistent sized potatoes and Sauce was the best!!!
Finished with a beautiful dessert - Torta Caprese - Great textures with well balanced chocolate flavour with Peach gelato, Chocolate crackle and peach sauce - perfect way to end the dinner!!! Definitely recommend this place and can’t wait to be back and try new dishes!!!

Loved: daily beef (sirloin) with miso, crispy chat potato with black truffle garlic mayo, nashville hot wings.

review is based on a function: I travelled from Melbourne and attended my friends wedding at malt. The malt team made the wedding perfect . The venue upstairs was rustic and beautiful. The food quality was amazing I couldn’t really fault anything, from the generous portions canapés downstairs at the bar, the alcohol range and the three course dinner itself was excellent. The service from the staff was excellent and attentive. The only criticism I can give is the venue is hot and not well ventilated, the aircon was not strong enough to cool the venue so it was very humid and stuffy inside. I would recommend this place for functions
Sometimes, life is hard. You find yourself overworked and deadlines are looming. At times like that, it's a nice surprise when your other half takes initiative to take you out for a nice lunch to get your mind off work. Bonus points for deciding to go to Malt dining, a place within 50 metres from work, that I've always wanted to go to but never had a good enough reason to try, and so he took me there, just because.
Above average food; technical aspects of cooking is executed well but the strength and depth of flavours can be a tad hit and miss.
Good menu which deviates from the usual run-of-mill offered around town.
Overall, good ambience and one of the better options in the cbd.

A very generous 4 but should really be a 3.5. At a fine dining restaurant such as Malt dinner would be the best option for your buck.
The lunch menu is for sure far less expensive (still pricey for lunch), however the portions will be small and you may not get the best that the restaurant has to offer.
Artichoke for the starter was fresh and flavourful. The tofu while seemingly the centerpiece of the dish according to the menu was instead a paste on the bottom of the artichokes which made me unsure if I received the correct dish. The open steak-sandwich was delicately prepared and the steak was very well cooked to medium rare with a good consistency. The overall flavor was excellent however the sandwich was lukewarm which made it less enjoyable than it should have been.
I am willing to give this place another try for dinner, as for lunch a better and cheaper meal can be found in a more traditional Café or your "middle of the range" restaurant.
Came here on a Saturday night with friends. I ordered the beef with horseradish and beetroot. The beef was cooked well; however, I think the consensus round the table was that the duck far outshone the other proteins on offer. The chat potatoes were a delicious side.
We shared the the white chocolate parfait with pumkin and the chocolate tonka with quince. The chocolate was my favourite - the quince was a lovely accompaniment to the richness of the chocolate. The white chocolate parfait was on the savoury side and I think I would've preferred the pumkin to be cold, not warm and a bit more texture in the dessert.
The staff were very attentive and professional. The pianist added to the intimate atmosphere.

Amazing place to eat or drink. Decided to try the degastation 9 course and was not disappointed. Every course was incredible. Service was superb and very friendly, atmosphere was very cosy for a quiet night. The best thing for me however was the huge selection of whiskeys. I would be hard pressed to find a bigger selection of single malts anywhere else. Highly recommended to check it out if your down here.
We had 6 course degustation dinner with matching wines. It was such a special dinner and food was extremely delicious. Customer service was good and staff were very attentive. The restaurant atmosphere was great with live pianist.

We were travelling to Brisbane from Perth. We had wonderful time dining at alt Dining. The service was very attentive and food was very well prepared and presented. Highly recommend.
Headed here for lunch with my friends given the very reasonable price points for a not-so-casual dining experience. Ordered oysters for appetizer (a bit small but I always love oysters so that wasn't a problem), while for main we had roast lamb leg (so-so), barramundi (good!), and beef brisket (this one's a winner -- beef was really soft and the slaw was well-seasoned). As for desserts, we were particularly keen on trying the malt brownies as it's received stellar reviews in the past, and I gotta say it did not disappoint. Place is a bit dark which doesn't make a very good photo spot, but overall still very nice and definitely worth a visit.

My partner and I celebrated our anniversary here by dining on the six-course degustation menu with matched wines. From making the reservation to the moment we left the venue, the service was impeccable. We were told that the degustation menu was usually done earlier (than our 7:30pm reservation) so as to give us the best experience to take in all the course but they made it work for us.
The degustation was amazing and such a wonderful experience. We loved the cured cobia with piel de sapo (Christmas melon) and cucumber: such a lovely, refreshing first course. And the tenderness of the duck breast and charred beef in the following courses was superb. We very much liked the fresh strawberry dessert. All the food was so beautifully presented and just the right portion size for degustation. We are also happy to have decided on the matched wines because they were worth it! Every red, white and sparkling were perfect accompaniments to our meals (we especially liked the Malbec). My partner is not a big wine drinker but even he enjoyed the drops that we were served.
Claire was our server and her service was relaxed, welcoming and very appropriate. The signed card by the staff and piccolo bottle of champagne was such a lovely touch too.
Thank you so much to Malt Dining for providing an anniversary and dining memory I will always be fond of.
My only regret is not taking more photos: the restaurant was very classy and the low lighting made for an intimate and rich experience of the dining however, this meant that flash would’ve had to have been used for every course. I decided against that and to just savour the food. I highly recommend you take the chance to savour it too!
Came here for a family dinner, very friendly staff. Food was cooked with quality ingredients, our favourite dish is the roasted pumpkin, they are sweet and creamy. For main we have ordered chicken and beef, the chicken was cooked in two different ways and both are very juicy.

For a special occasion required some fine dining, and after hearing of the new 9 course degustation menu, we headed off to Malt dining. On arrival, we had a pre dinner drink of a Woodford whiskey neat each at the bar. Sitting down to the degustation adventure, the waitress explained wonderfully the coming dishes and matching wines that we would be trying. 1st dish was a Cured Cobia and cucumber, followed by Goats Cheese and carrot with buckwheat. Both of these beautifully presented and great flavours. We now jumped straight into the 3rd dish Mount Tamborine Yabby with Tomato and Jalapeño, this was my least favorite, as the Yabby and tomato just didn't taste like a great combination. Moving right along to our 4th course, Rye Pasta with watercress with a soft egg on top, a wonderful flavour combination. 5th and 6th course was chicken with peas and gem, then Roasted Duck breast with butternut, rye and citrus. Both beautifully cooked and prepared. Loosening the belt, we went onto course number 7, Charred beef with mushroom ketchup, asparagus and mustard greens. To finish off this taste sensation, came strawberry white chocolate with rose, yoghurt and lemon myrtle. This was so refreshing and cleansing to eat, and to prepare you for this finishing course of Carrot and Beetroot cake with blood orange and goats cheese. All the wines I thought were matched beautifully with the dishes. All in all, it was a great dining experience at Malt Dining.
Another glowing review for Malt team. The six course degustation with the matched wines proved to be an excellent choice for a double birthday and wedding celebration. Everything was beautifully judged, and was complemented by attentive but subtle service. We'll be back next time we're up from Adelaide.

Really great spot for lunch at very reasonable prices. The duck ragu with ricotta balls has a really nice balance of flavours, though today was a little bland. Ambience is casual and comfortable, but still very professional. Great place to take colleagues. Service was quite good. Great spot to add to your regular list of CBD suggestions.
Great little spot to get whisky and a snack or meal. A bartender that actually knows their bourbon and whiskey. Worth a try for sure, loved the cheese platter with a drink.

Visited Malt on countless recommendations from foodie friends and definitely was not disappointed. This place is amazing. My partner and I shared an entrée (scallops), had our own main (steak and the market fish) plus sides and then shared the signature brownie. Everything was perfection, although next time I would forgo the entrée and sides so that we can fit a brownie in each (it's that good)!
A very enjoyable meal. The young staff were excellent- friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Starters of roo tail pasta and beef salad were well presented and tasty. Lamb rump main was to die for.
Restaurant is tucked away upstairs in a dark room full of old-school character. They waitresses took half an hour to ask us what we wanted to eat, despite not being overly busy on a Monday evening. We had scallops for entree (nice), pork belly shareplate with Brussel sprouts and duck fat potatoes. Not a fan of the potatoes - hard and not really tasting the duck fat... Brussel sprouts grew on me but was not what I was expecting. It's more like Brussel sprouts chips? The pork belly was really nice though with cabbage and peaches. The waitresses ask when paying the bill if you'd like to tip them. Overall, a little disappointed in the place as my BF had raved about it but still a little above average.
Definitely the most amazing meal I have had in Brisbane. The taste of malt which is only available Monday to Thursday is definitely the way to do it with the five course tasting menu. The pan fried gnocchi was the standout.
Well established Malt Dining adds to the growing trend of multi-level establishments with a restaurant and bar. Housed in an old market building that was built in the 1800s, the interior keeps much of the original feel, from the exposed brickwork to the timber flooring and the open peaked roof. There are three levels to Malt – the ground level bar, an upstairs restaurant that is aptly named “Attic” and the below ground cellar with a private dining room.

I've sat on the fence about posting a review for awhile because when we went I was very sick and spent the entire evening wishing I was at home in bed. However some convos with my dining companions afterwards kind of confirmed my overall impressions - restaurant is lovely, great atmosphere. Love the piano. Service was a bit snooty. Food was ok - nice but nothing that I have to have again? Even sadly the malt brownie....
The standout dish for me was the Brussel sprouts. Delicious. I had chicken for the main. Which is weird - I never order chicken (because I think chicken is for people who don't actually like food) and cause, well, chicken schmicken. It was fine, but, ya know, chicken.
The bar downstairs is great and everyone enjoyed post dinner drinks and chat in a cosy nook (except for me because I wanted to go home).
I feel like I should go again when I am feeling better. The restaurant seems very popular (was at capacity) and there were lots of people "romantic dining". It just wasn't for me.

main was the pan fried gnocchi with pumpkin and this plate was beautiful! candied pumpkin seeds were great and the dish had a slight kick of chilli taste to it. would've been nice to have slightly more truffle sauce though.
finished off with the "malt brownie", which I would kill for to learn how to make it. the brownie was so decadent and even though the dessert was slightly sweet - the salted caramel, honeycomb and chocolate pearls was just a perfect combination.

Amazing! Great menu- seriously had so much trouble deciding what to order because every item sounded amazing. I ordered the duck and the partner had the beef cheek - both of which were delicious. Good portion sizes and great, complex flavour combinations. Dessert didn't disappoint either. Their signature malt brownie was to die for! Can't wait to come back and try some of their other dishes.
Great atmosphere and service tonight for my second visit to Malt. It was quite busy as it was a Friday but the food arrived to the table quickly and was delicious to say the least. Although the entrees were quite small, the mains were generously portioned. Some standouts were the steak tartare we ordered for entree and the lamb rack and pork for main. The lamb was cooked perfectly and tender whilst the pork had lovely combinations of sweet purée and crunchy elements to give the dish a nice texture. Malt's signature dessert, the brownie, was a wonderful way to finish the night and the combination of chocolate, vanilla and honeycomb is a classic. Great experience once again.

Just a short walk from the office, Malt is more or less what I expected. Sophisticated enough, with old mate on the piano having a good time to himself and extensive whiskey menu sitting there begging to be ordered from. Let us just take a moment to appreciate how rare a bearded man in a beret playing a piano a few metres away from you as you sip a single malt usually found in woop woop Scotland really is.
The Missus orders the tongue and cheek. I order the cured salmon. What comes out is pretty amazing. Purée accompanying the red meat off cuts is very on point. Cured salmon is tasty with the enoki mushroom garnish really stealing the show. 5/5 restaurant so far. Now I order my 3rd single malt. Life is not bad as the long wait for the mains begin.
The wait for the mains is long and tough. I gaze forlornly into my whiskey tumbler. The old girl checks her social media for the 15th time in the last 20 minutes. I struggle to catch a Zubat in Pokemon Go, the slippery little buggers. Then finally they arrive. Beef cheek + eye fillet, and tea smoked duck breast.
The verdict? Beef cheek is not bad, 3/5. Eye fillet 5/5, cooked perfectly. All elements on the dish tied up quite well so I give the whole shebang roughly 4.1837372626 out of 5. The duck breast was not cooked to perfection and that entire dish was all over the place. Regardless the technique was competent. 3.27471 stars out of 5.
The wife orders a Malt Brownie. The long wait begins. I consider driving home and feeding the dog in the time it takes them to make the brownie. I throw red and white balls at several small birds to enslave them. The dessert arrives. There's popping candy in the chocolate soil! Overall quite a good dish, with an ice cream element layered neatly within that justifies its coolness and prevents it from being teased by the more mature desserts.
Service? I feel that I will copy and paste this often in the future. This is not Melbourne. Nobody here will rush to your table as you go to the bathroom to retie your napkin and charm your wife with their excellently maintained beard. The service was not bad. We could even call it good, I guess. On a local scale let's say the service was above par.
Malt has always been a good safe choice for me. Been a few times, the food is consistently good and the ambience is a bit different to a "standard" restaurant, a bit of rustic appeal there. Haven't had a bad dish here and the service was good. I would recommend this place.

Great atmosphere, good food and a wide variety of whiskey. I'm a lover of beef cheeks (Meatballs and Beef Cheeks) and the braised wagyu beef cheeks at Malt are worthy of adulation. Not quite on par with Alchemy, but not far off. Very pleasant to have a piano in the background. Probably enjoyed too many whiskeys, because I don't even recall whether I had dessert! I've been back a few different times for whiskeys on the ground level - love the large ice cubes.
What a great venue to spend the night at starting off with a few cocktails at the bar and finishing off with a great meal.
Entree we had the Citrus cured salmon and the tongue and cheek - wow.
Mains we went with the Tea smoked duck and the braised beef cheek - wow. With the sides of Brussels sprouts and roasted carrots we were certainly satisfied. Great presentation and flavours.
Service was top notched as expected, only one down side was the bill but you certainly get what you paid for.
Had a degustation here a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.. Our waiter was extremely knowledgable with his dishes and wines which we always like, when it comes to a degustation. The interior of the restaurant is quite dark and cosy, perfect for the romantic dates!

We had an excellent experience at Malt Dining 2 weeks ago. I had the Wagyu and my friend went in for the lamb. Both dishes were top notch! The flavours and the sides truly complimented. We'll be back for sure!
We had a nice dinner at Malt, but I wouldn't rate it as an amazing dining experience. The food was tasty, but not amazing for a 'fine dining' category restaurant. A few small details that really took away from the experience were side dishes that came out after we'd finished our meals and stale bread. Albeit minor details, these things really differentiate a 'good' restaurant from an 'amazing' restaurant. The ambience was lovely and pleasant and our wait-staff were attentive.
We enjoyed the five course degustation and highly recommend it! My favourite dish was the eye fillet with slow cooked brisket and my partner loved the pumpkin and mozzarella tortellini! Each dish was cooked perfectly, with the individual elements bursting with flavour and complexity! There was great service and staff were friendly and the live music was lovely. The cocktails were a treat! We will definitely be back!

Went to this restaurant last night as a surprise from my partner. We had the herb pan fried gnocchi for entree and for mains i had the pan fried market fish which was great. The fish of the day was Barramundi and they cooked the skin to perfection. It was a nice crunch to accompany the nicely plump fish that wasn't dry or tasteless. It was sitting on top of some zucchini (forgot the name, but they kind of shaved it to make it like a pasta?) but it was so good in the creamy sauce. The sauce was so lovely and light, seeming that i was kind of expecting a heavy cream sauce, but it really was fantastic and everything tied in so well together.
I stole a bit of my partners meal which was the pumpkin tortellini. It was actually quite a sweet dish but it was so good. It tasted like it was caramelised and for me personally (i'm more savoury than a sweet tooth) more like a dessert. But my partner fully enjoyed it.
Overall great food, nice interior, the waitress was a little pretentious towards us, but overall it was a great evening!
We flew into Brisbane Saturday afternoon, rang and booked a table (thanks to a cancellation). We arrived and walked into a bar buzzing with pre-dinner drinkers and climbed very modest but contemporary staircase.
We were welcomed by a lovely waitress and shown to our table. The staff were very attentive, polite and knew the menu. We had a wonderful evening, the food was simple but delicious and well matched.
The endive salad was amazing and perfect for a warm summer Brisbane night. With it we had the chicken and the scotch fillet with broccoli.
For depart we couldn't go past the brownie and the brûlée.
Wonderful night and we'll be back when next in Brisbane!
Visited Malt last night(Monday night) for my partners birthday and it was fantastic. From the moment we walked in our experience was great. There was a birthday card on our table which was signed by the waitresses, who all came over to wish him a happy birthday. They were very attentive and knowledgeable throughout the whole night. Food was delicious and portion size was just right. For entree we had oysters followed by complementary bread, vinegar and oil. We had Salomon and chicken for mains. For dessert we had Whisky brûlée and chocolate hazelnut soufflé which were to die for! They even put a candle in the dessert. Everything about the night made it such a great dining experience. I would highly recommend malt to anyone especially for a special occasion. I cannot wait to return.
I am a Malt groupie from way back, it has been my absolute favourite in Brisbane for the last 3 or so years. The food and service is usually faultless, however I recently visited on the weekend and I am curious as to whether there has been a recent change in hands? I am aware that there was a change in chef, and the food was still great, oysters in particular were divine but dessert noticeably less impressive, but above all else a distinct change noticed in the service. The staff were still friendly and lovely, but certainly could not be described as attentive, and the drinks service was incredibly slow. I would still recommend this place but I would be lying if I didn't say I was slightly disappointed this weekend.
The bar downstairs is a great place to sit with your friends for a drink before heading upstairs for dinner. Love the food, you will not be disappointed.
Have been here several times with my partner. Love the atmosphere, they normally have a pianist playing. Menu is very limited, but they do change it up. waitresses are very friendly and know their stuff. I would recommend here for a romantic dinner.
We went here on a whim to see what great food was available on offer...and we were not disappointed. We had the prix fixe 3 course lunch (I recommend the 3 over the 2 - much better value for money). The standout dish was the malt brownie. I would actually consider coming back just to order that as a stand alone dish. Service was very attentive and friendly. Complimentary tea and coffee was also offered. Ultimately, I feel as though every food lover should visit this place at least once.

The restaurant has a really wonderful, subdued atmosphere, with a lovely live pianist playing off to the side. The staff were wonderful and very very attentive. And the food! The food was to die for. I have not been able to stop thinking about the puree pumpkin since eating it. Just incredible! The brownie was a must do on our list, and after thought, we decided to get one each, and I'm so glad we did! It was delicious. Well worth it! Overall, this is one of my favourite restaurants in Brisbane, and I will continue coming here in the future.

It was a bit quiet on the day we went so perhaps the atmosphere fell a bit flat, however, the service and food were wonderful. Well cooked lamb and an amazing chocolate brownie for dessert.
After looking at many lunch menus, we decided to go to Malt Dining in the city. We have been there before and the food and service has always been exceptional. Furthermore, they had a scrumptious sounding ‘Taste of Malt’ degustation menu. Perfect!
Good value food. Had lunch here with a few colleagues. The menu had limited choices but both the salad and the fish we ordered were nicely done. It takes a bit of time so budget an hour for a sit down lunch.
Impressed every time. I have been dined here a handful of times over the last few years. Once or twice with friends, once for a more personal catchup with someone and also with clients. Every time and for each, very different, situation I have been impressed. The service is top quality and the food is devine.
The best salmon. We here quite a while ago with my boyfriend celebrating valentine's day.
I had the salmon because I loved the salmon roe comes with it.
the salmon was cooked to perfection and the mash potato was creamy
my boyfriend had the steak. it was yummy too.

Atmosphere - A lovely, dark and intimate space. The live piano is also a nice touch.
Now to the food. Everything was beautifully and carefully presented. King Fish is always a winner, though the Ceviche was deconstructed to the point of not really being a ceviche anymore. Without the essential curing, calling the dish cubist inspired sashimi would have been more accurate. Sous Vide Prawns with granny smith foam was fresh and delightful, accompanying broad beans a brilliant green though slightly too al dente.
Worth a return visit.

High expectations. I've been here twice now and have had different experiences both times. The first time I came here was almost 2 years ago and I was absolutely blown away by the food and service. There were only two wait staff on that night and they managed the floor exceptionally well and the food was outstanding. I could not wait to bring my partner to Malt but unfortunately he was unable to say the same.
We both had risotto to start with followed by the market fish served with morten bag bug and zucchini spaghetti and partner had the lamb. The food was still good; flavours were amazing but serving sizes have gotten tiny. Being fine dining, I wasn't expecting massive portions however, I believe you should at least be satiated after entrée, bread, main & wine. I'm not a massive eater but I found myself trying to fill up on water.
There were two people on the floor that night, I believe one waitress and the manager. They knew the menu well and were friendly, however we were left feeling forgotten for some of the night. We sat around with our empty entree plates for a while, which we didn't mind seeing as the girls were relatively busy, however after about 20 mins of them sitting there, they were cleared and we heard the manager call away our mains....which meant it took about another 20-25 mins before our mains arrived at the table. whoops.
The manager knew that we were getting a little impatient but didn't speak to us about the wait and just continued to serve other guest. We're not people to complain but after that, we weren't too keen to stay for dessert so I have no comment on that.
Its a shame that my two experiences were so different. I loved the place so much after my first so I'm still hoping my next visit will be better.

Had my 1st Anniversary dinner here and we loved it. We tried the "Taste of Malt" and every dish was delicious. Vibrate colors and flavours on every dish which compensated each other, made our taste buds full of life. Staff was friendly and helpful, decor is nice however lighting was quite dim. Overall we were pleased with our dining experience. This place had been on my wish list for a very long time, finally I can rate it 9.510. Will return again to try more dishes.
Loved it. Brought my partner here for her birthday dinner. When making the booking, I was asked whether it was a special occasion and I informed staff about my partner's birthday. I wasn't expecting anything, but when we were brought to our seats, there was a really lovely birthday card on the table for her. We chose to start with cocktails (I loved my China Fizz), and then selected the Taste of Malt menu. Every single dish brought out was bursting with flavour and had us mesmerised. Malt even put a candle on top of my partner's brownie when it was brought out, which I thought was an extremely sweet gesture. We thoroughly enjoyed the food at Malt, and will be back for sure!
Decided on Malt for our anniversary. We ordered the Taste of Malt degustation menu which had amazing flavours- mandarin crumble kingfish in tarragon sauce was a highlight! Pretty good value at $90 for 5 dishes. Service was ok but could've been a little more enthusiastic. Shame we got a corner table with one of us looking at white walls but otherwise very tasteful decor and nice atmosphere.
Wow. An evening to remember.. We were made to feel welcome and special right from the start. Delicious cocktails and quail to start, then duck with a sweet potato mash and a heavenly wagyu steak - I now finally understand the beauty of a perfectly cooked steak! The malt Icecream in the brownie was the smoothest I have ever tried, and the souffle was light and fresh. Attentive, knowledgeable staff were able to recommend particular beers from an extensive list and our table by the window was one to envy. What an enjoyable evening. Thank you Malt, we will be back!
The food was sensational and full of flavour. Our waitress was very on top of her game and gave brilliant descriptions of the food she placed infront of us.
The music was a beautiful mix of blues, soul and jazz which created a rich exciting atmosphere. Malt is a restaurant like no other and you will not regret coming here for tea!
A great place for couples to share a romantic dinner together as each table was candlelit. My only wish was that they had a dance floor.

Great inner-city dining!. On the basis of other diners excellent reviews, I booked Malt for my wife's birthday last night. I love the location - the building itself is part of an older Brisbane and the Attic is very cosy with nicely elevated views onto the street. Even though we didn't have a drink there, the wine bar downstairs looked very welcoming also. We were able to get a park on the street almost beside restaurant, which was a pleasant surprise. The food was the next. My wife is rather picky and at a first glance of the menu the use of such elements as black rice congee and liquorice cast an impression that the chef might have been trying a little too hard.
How wrong we were; the food was spectacular. We had the quail and the scallops for entree, and the market fish (Barramundi) and venison for mains, finishing with the berry souffle. All the flavours worked beautifully, the proteins were perfectly cooked and the presentation was spectacular. The only mild criticisms were that the lighting was a bit low (I could barely read my menu) and the service was a little surly, if efficient. Neither of us had dined at Malt before or knew anyone who had, and I would absolutely recommend it.

My wife and I went there on a Friday night - the service and the food were simply amazing. The waiter serving us knew the menu well, gave us recommendations and suggestions when we wanted it, looked after us as you would expect which is becoming increasingly unusual. The food was very good, and good value. The atmosphere both in the pub downstairs and the restaurant upstairs was really good.

Great night out. We dined here recently and wish we had earlier! The food and service was amazing from start to finish. Loved how they explained everything on the plate so I knew what I was eating! The ice cream in the Malt Brownie was the best I've ever had!

3 Course Dinner. Just had the best and most relaxing 3 course meal. The food from start to finish was incredible full of flavor and looked like heaven on a plate. Our waiter Claire was very knowledgable about the food and wine and helped to make the night a great experience.
New Favourite. Wish I had gone earlier! We went with one of our Entertainment vouchers and the experience was so good, we couldn't bring ourselves to use it. It is amazing.
The food was excellent, but the service was what really made this special. Friendly, not cold and cocky like in so many restaurants these days. And don't they know their product...the way everything on the plate is explained in detail when placed down in front of you is superb. Wine knowledge was also beyond most other places, which is a pleasant surprise. Can't recommend Malt highly enough.

Delicious and excellent service. Went to Malt with really high expectations, and I wasn't disappointed. We tried the Steak Tartare-I'm not usually a fan of raw meat but it was delicious. My duck was perfectly cooked and their Malt brownie is just right. A not too sweet dessert but sweet enough to be happy! By the time we had our main, we were rushing for time so we asked if the dessert would take long. The waitress promised it wouldn't be and it definitely wasn't. A wonderful experience, would recommend it for both the foodies and not!
Sensational!. A fabulous dining experience! The service was first class. The setting was wonderful enhanced by a quality pianist in the background. Parking was handily located especially given it was a Friday night. But most importantly, the meal was absolutely tremendous. I would certainly recommend Malt Dining to you all!
Excellent Service. Went for Malt for the first time with fairly high expectations and was not disappointed. Being a Thusday it was quiet but still a nice atmosphere.
The bar on the ground floor was well stocked with premium drinks and a nice place to relax before going upstairs to dinner. Once upstairs, the staff were very attentive and knowledgeable. Anything they didn't know themselves, they found out from the chef. They had no issue dealing with my food intolerances, and chef even made a desert off menu for me as I couldn't have any of the options offered.
The food itself was delicious, packed with flavour and very well balanced. Highlights for us were the lamb rump and the brownie. Well worth a visit.
Good food with a beautiful setting. This is a really lovely and unique dinning venue in Brisbane and I love how its hidden in a little attic in the middle of Brisbane CBD. The highlight of the evening was the cozy candlelit atmosphere and the beautiful grand piano. The food was also very good, however I thought my main needed more gnoochi and/or vegetables to balance out the strong flavour of the beef cheeks (which were cooked perfectly). The signature Malt Brownies were also very good but for some reason this dish did not have the same 'wow factor' as the first time I tried it a year ago.
I was also very impressed with the service, my friend brought a long list of food he could not eat and the kitchen was more than happy to accommodate his requirements without a moment's notice. Overall I had a lovely night and highly recommend it!
Can't say there were any real issues, over all there was excellent service, absolutely delicious dessert and a fabulous main course. However I will critique the mashed potato which was probably one of the most awful tastes I've ever encountered, it was a sort of burnt taste. Aside from this it's absolutely perfect. Love the theme of the whole place and the atmosphere.
Eaten here a couple times, it just keeps getting better! Service is absolutely exceptional and food is delicious. The malt brownie is a personal fave of mine.
10/10. For now, this easily takes 1st place for my choice of restaurant in Brisbane.

Great for small groups. We hired the private dining room in the basement to host a murder mystery - the location was fantastic, food and service (before, during and after) - faultless.

My partner and I had dinner at Malt on a whim, we heard some great reviews from friends and had to give it a shot.
Staff were friendly, had a great knowledge of the menu and were happy to answer and questions we had. They described the dishes to us in detail, which was great as a few items I was a little unsure of.
Atmosphere is relaxed and cosy, there was a pianist the night we dined and it added a nice touch to the evening.
The food is top notch and the service to match - keep it up Malt!

Great experience. Had a beautiful celebratory dinner at Malt. The whole experience was fantastic, the menu - entrees, mains and desserts were all memorable, the service was great and so was the ambience. One thing though - the pianist was fine but I was not a fan at all of the sappy romantic piano hits on the playlist. Some nice ambient music or jazz piano would be nice.

Delicious food and lovely atmosphere. We went for our first wedding anniversary and I had pretty high expectations as this is obviously a premium restaurant. We were not allowed to have drinks in the bar as they had a wedding reception which was unfortunate, however we were told when booking so it was fair enough.
My wife had the Agnolotti and I had the crab salad, both were delicious. Portion sizes were quite small as expected in a fine dining establishment. For mains my wife had the beef cheek and I had the pork, both were fully explained by the wait staff as to cooking methods, which was interesting. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, and the portions were very generous. I was a bit nervous I would leave hungry after entree! Dessert was the brownie for the wife and the maple tart for me, again, both dishes were outstanding.
Service was absolutely exceptional with all wait staff very professional, friendly and informed on the menu items. Overall I could not fault the experience, fantastic restaurant and fully recommend it.

I dined at Malt with some friends last month for my birthday. The food was absolutely beautiful. I had the wagyu sirloin and beef cheek; the dish had wonderful flavours and textures. The malt brownie, for dessert, was decadent. The service was second to none; the waiters were friendly and extremely knowledgeable - they made my birthday special. YUM. Went here for Fathers day, and it was just beautiful. The staff were attentive and helpful :) the only thing that was a little annoying was the piano being played right in our ears...as we were seated close to it. Other then that will definitely be back! Thankyou!
FANTASTIC!!!!. I took my GF to Malt for dinner on saturday night and all I can say is it is FANTASTIC! the service was 2nd to none, the wine was beautiful and the food was stunning. I would recommend Malt dining to everyone! the scallops are amazing, the duck & the pork was amazing, the malt brownie what can i say... Amazing!! our waiter Rebecca was very lovely she told us everything we needed to know and answered all our questions and she truly made our experience so much more.

Best of Brisbane. Had a friend who is used to fine dining in Melbourne visit me twice this year - a few months ago I took her to one of the most renowned restaurants in Brisbane, and felt terrible for her lack of options and average Brisbane service. Last night, I took her to Malt Dining. The Vegetarian menu is as long and as appealing to "Mains" menu. My friend had the Zucchini Flowers which were flawless, she was so excited to have numerous appealing options. I had the pork, which was probably the greatest meal I have had in my life. The dessert menu was spectacular. The service was immaculate. Thank you Malt for showing Brisbane is a world city!
Absoutely love this restaurant!. We dined at Malt for the second time on Monday night and it was just as good as we had remembered from our first experience. The food was absolutely amazing, we each had three courses plus sides and we could not fault any of the dishes, they were all superb. The service was excellent, and the ambience is really beautiful, classy and cosy. I cannot recommend Malt enough, I have been telling anyone who will listen to try it out!
Consistently good. A faithful favorite - can't always be expecting the world's greatest service, but its generally very good and the food/wine always top notch. I've dined in the private cellar on a few occasions too, and I recommend the space thoroughly. Kudos to Malt furthermore on the in house pianist playing classics over dinner... Book a table for 2 if you're keen on feeling loved up and exceptionally satisfied :)
My only criticism (hardly) might be that my dessert on numerous occasions has been massively over sized .. but hey!

Great Again. We had eaten here a while ago now with some friends, they suggested we go again before this year’s ‘Entertainment Book’ had finished, remembering how good it was, we decided to go again.
Same excellent food and service again, our pre-dinner cocktails in the bar were also great.

Great Food & Service. Had wanted to try Malt for a while as the food got good reviews and the menu sounded tasty.
Booked in with some friends for a Saturday night, had a quick drink in the bar first. Cocktails were good, we were surprised the bar wasn’t busier being a Saturday night. The restaurant upstairs was busy, so a good job we booked.
The restaurant upstairs was nice, a nice atmosphere with some piano music being played.
The food was service was all excellent, couldn't fault either. Value was made even better as it features in the ‘Entertainment Book’ so we scored a nice discount too!
Having waited so long to try it, we won’t wait as long to return!
Worth the money. Coming all the way from Canada, we wanted to make sure we ate at Brisbanes best restaraunt. The steak we ordered was fantastic! I never had such a good slice of Beef. The appetizer (scallop) was good but very small. Desert was great as well. I would recommend this place to anyone who is stopping by Brisbane.
Need to be impressed? Go here. Start with the top service - people who really care and are genuinely interested in you having a positive experience.

Loved it. 3 of us had a wonderful night out at Malt. We all had 3 courses and we all enjoyed everything we ate. The staff were friendly and professional, the space is well presented, staff were kowledgable, and they were helpful with wine choices. The food was delicious. We will definitely be back, more things on that menu that I'd love to try.
A very pleasant surprise in Brisbane. George produced the most amazing degustation I've ever had, the duck breast, by which all restaurants should be judged, was a taste sensation.

Loved it!. I had been wanting to go to Malt for ages and finally got the excuse late last month as my husband and I were in the city to see a friend's show. We didn't have time for dinner beforehand so we were pretty hungry by the time we got to Malt (at around 8:30pm). The service in The Attic restaurant was wonderful and our waitress recommended a delicious wine! The food and atmosphere were also great - we will definitely be back!
Malt just about triples the overall quality of dining in brisbane. attentive and friendly waitstaff, non-pretentious atmosphere, and importantly, incredible food with a good wine list to go with it. Catering to special dietary needs was also sincerely appreciated. Top notch.

Old-School Service. I am one of those people who rates a restaurant on not only service, ambience and food - but also its decor and design. Malt is simply charming. It is elegant. Wooden stairs lead you to The Attic, past an ebony grand piano, into a sunken dimly lit, intimate restaurant with large old timber windows looking out over Market Street. The exposed brick walls on one side contrast the clean white walls on the other. The tables are made of real timber, and so are the chairs. There are real linen tablecloths and real candles in the votives on each table.
The wine list is incredible. Nothing pretentious.
The meals are faultless. When you look at the menu you could think you've seen these meals before - but the Malt chefs are smarter than that. When you order at Malt - you're not eating 'the same old thing'.
And then there's the service. Pleasant, polite, knowledgable waiters who are not annoying, but very attentive. And they managed to overhear me saying 'Happy Birthday' to my husband - and brought a candle out with his dessert.
Malt - keep doing what you're doing.

What a spectacular dining experience! We came here for my mums 60th and had the most delightful night. Staff were wonderful, and the food was simply amazing. Best of all, they catered for gluten free in a very considered manner. Cannot recommend this place highly enough!

Favourite! Yum!. I love this place. The food is amazing, the setting makes you feel that you are definitely in a special place. My friends and I go to this place when we want to treat ourselves. Having said that, the prices are reasonable for fine dining given that the portion sizes are so generous. I can only do 2 courses at this place (and I'm a little guts too!!!) so something to bear in mind if you are a dessert fan (I'm not). The scallop entree was delicious and I struggle to order anything other than the wagyu sirloin and beef cheek or duck main. I tend to alternate between those!!! My friends had the fine apple tart and creme brûlée for dessert. Both looked yummy and tasted that way so I'm told. If you haven't been to Malt yet, then you are missing out! Get there now!
Magical experience, a definite favourite. Wow what a place! First the ambience, brickwork and lighting sets the mood for a relaxing experience. Couple this with a very attentive and happy wait-staff. Top it off with the most amazing food which arrived at the table quick enough to keep you form being hungry but slow enough to make sure you have time to rest and reflect on the previous course. Such a pleasurable experience!

Lovely first time at Malt.. Malt on monday night and it was just divine - we will be back. Staff were warm and welcoming from the start, and continued to be attentive throughout the meal - it was obvious they knew the menu inside out. For entree we had the gravlax kingfish which was lovely (tequila puree worked perfectly with it), but the stand out was the quail tart - perfectly cooked quail with delicious flaky pastry. For main it was onto wagyu sirloin and lamb - both fantastic but the wagyu a highlight. Dessert was the creme brullee and the Malt brownie - we pretty much would have licked the plates if allowed. All in all, a great experience. If you're looking for somewhere in the city, stay away from the hype at eagle st pier and head to Malt.
Amazing... New favourite.. Went here Riverfire 2012. Staff were lovely, accommodating and about as friendly as possible. The menu was divine and varied, and worth the premium. The decor was warm and romantic, with big bay windows and wooden finishes. To top it all off there was a beautiful pianist playing at just the right ambient level. 10/10!

Definitely Coming Back!. Visited Malt this week on a Monday night (instantly impressed, since all my other favourites are closed on Mondays!). Elegant and interesting venue, sure to be popular in Winter with its cosy, dark feel. It took us forever to decide what to have from the small but very appetising main menu as they all sounded delicious! I ordered the Duck, Pork and Veal Terrine entree with cranberry apple compote which was flavorsome and a very decent sized entree portion. My dining partner had the Gravlax Kingfish and enjoyed the tequila gel and citrus tapioca that accompanied it. For mains I thoroughly enjoyed the perfectly cooked Milly Hill Lamb with Herb Gnocchi which came topped with rich, melt-in-the-mouth lamb neck jus. My partner ordered the Grimaud Duck Breast Sous Vide and Confit Leg, and was impressed by the braised red cabbage accompaniment, though the meat was a little dry for my liking. We skipped dessert as we were both sufficiently full, though I am dying to return to try the Malt Brownie! We will definitely be back to sample more of the menu at Malt!
Visited this venue for a Birthday dinner and WOW! Talk about feeling at home. Warm, generous and comfortable, the staff made us all feel like we were in their home with the added bonus of a great wine cellar. The restaurant was very busy and they all did very well making sure they looked after everyone.
The food was lovely. Super generous portions for the price (av $36 a main and we were stuffed ) and the vegetarian selections were really good. We all left very happy.
I would say YES YES YES to this restaurant again for a large group or romantic dinner for 2. Thank you Malt :) we loved it!
Fine Dining. Fine dining with delicate tasty food really sums the whole experience. I had the kingfish for entree and it really was one of the most delicately balanced dish I've had. Fresh raw kingfish with tapioca pearls was a touch of class. The main of wagyu beef with beef cheek was also nicely cooked, the jus complimented both cuts of beef and the vegetable was we'll cooked. The crime brûlée was also nicely done. My wife had the brownie, but I thought that was a bit rich. Excellent service and fast delivery of the food to our table really made this restaurant the benchmark of fine dining.
Our new favourite. We loved the ambience, great service and fantastic food! Wait staff is very knowlegeable about their menu and wines. Wild mushroom tart for entree was full of flavour, scallops my husband had were cooked perfectly. The duck main was really nice as well. Malt Brownie was just devine!

Top Anniversary Pick. We had a great meal. Pleasant decor and ambiance, a piano player, attentive staff. Food was very good. I enjoy oysters, however they often can be a let down. The waiter went to ask chef about the oysters who said he would recommend them. I wasn't disappointed. Hard to park in this area on a Saturday night so next time we will cab it. Nice to see vegetarian options on the menu. We will be back.
Took my friend here for our monthly catch up dinner. Beautifully furnished and intimate restaurant with a live pianist who played throughout the night. She was amazing. The staff were so warm and friendly and ambience was lovely. We ordered the natural oysters and scallops for entree which were not bad but not the best I've ever had. My main however was absolutely delicious. I ordered the beef cheeks and I want to say sirloin steak which was cooked to absolute perfection. My friend had the lamb which she said was good but apparently my meal was better :) we ordered the shoe string fries on the side along with the spring salad. Shoe stung fries were perfect! Salad mediocre. And the cocktails were perfect. Perfect first date, romantic dinner, anniversary etc restaurant. Loved this place and will brig my bf next time. Amazing food, staff, ambience!
Perfection.. This review may be 5 months too late but I still give it 5 stars all round. From the romantic atmosphere to the amazing food, Malt is just perfect. The staff were knowledgable and friendly, yet not too intrusive so that my boyfriend and I could still enjoy our anniversary together in our own little world. We ordered: Oysters, Eye fillet, Lamb and Side of fries. The eye fillet was the gem of the night. Tender and creamy and cooked medium rare. From memory we couldn't choose how the steak was done but medium rare definitely did the steak justice. The baby veggies served with the steak and lamb were practically the same though. Malt also had a pianist playing on the night. She played pieces ranging from Chopin to modern day pop (namely, Taylor Swift). That was the perfect finishing touch to the dining experience. bravo!
Amazing in every way. This place really impressed with their food, service and ambience (don't think the piano player ever took a break). After a not-so-nice experience at Public the night before, this was a pleasant surprise in the CBD.
The zucchini flower entree was very tasty yet delicate. And the pork assiette was full on with flavor, as was the duck. The food was so good our table turned it into a bit of a group-shared meal. Highly recommend it for a romantic date or even if you just want an amazing dining experience. The service was impeccable, very attentive without being intrusive. Can't wait to go back!

Superb!. Malt Dining was a fabulous experience - the ambience was charming, the food was wonderful and the service enjoyable. Any minor service glitches (eg, ordered oysters as an appetiser, they arrived with entrees) were acknowledged and the lovely staff did all they could to enhance the experience - I must say how nice it is to have people enthusiastic about what they were serving to you. They also came through with some excellent wine suggestions.
The food, so lovely. Exciting enough to be interesting and flavoursome enough to savour slowly, but also familiar enough to suit the warm and intimate atmosphere. Can't wait to go back!

So, So Good.. Normally when a restaurant receives as much hype as Malt has, your expectations are never met when you finally decide to dine there. Malt was an exception - the staff are approachable and friendly, the ambience was lovely (live piano in the background), and the food was just great. We ordered cocktails to start, served in tall glasses, picturesque as well as delicious. For the entree, we ordered the zucchini flowers stuffed with goat's cheese and eggplant. The zucchini flower-goat's cheese combination is always a winner, but the eggplant remained on the plate as it was unbearably salty. I was assured by a friend that it wasn't like this when she ate it, so it must have been a little hiccup. For the main, I ordered confit of duck leg and sous vide duck breast, which came with braised cabbage and artichoke puree. It was flawless, as was the dessert, which I can undoubtedly say, was one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. The chocolate brownie is a surefire winner, and something I will never forget eating. The plate was scattered with choc-coated pop rocks, lashings of smooth caramel, a caramel tuille crisp, aero pieces and what seemed like a parfait sandwiched in moist brownie. It was rich, but I cleaned it up, knowing I would regret it if I left even a morsel on my plate. Definitely going back to Malt.

To die for. Everything was spectacular! The service, the entrees, mains and desserts. Each course blew me away. It was also well priced for a fine dining restaurant.
The only thing I didn't like was the carpet, it was grey and had some stains on it..... but besides that, flawless ;)

Wonderful food, fantastic service and a lovely experience overall. My partner and I recently came here for a romantic dinner after our Kookaburra Queen reservation fell through and we had to find somewhere last minute. We arrived at 5pm on a Thursday after work and the bar downstairs was busy but not ridiculously crowded and the atmosphere was very relaxed.
We didn't have a booking for the restaurant but a staff member was more than happy to check the reservation list and let us know that they had a table free for 6:30. While we waited, we managed to get an outdoor table and ordered cocktails. The service was fantastic - the waiter was friendly and our drinks were made in no time and tasted amazing.
For dinner, we ordered the roasted zucchini flowers, the duck and the market fish. Everything was perfectly cooked and the waitress was incredibly helpful with wine recommendations. We also got the brownie for dessert which was so delicious.
The prices were very reasonable, the service was fantastic and the food and drinks were amazing. We'll definitely be back!

Brilliant Service - food was presented as descibed and waitress would explain which ingredient was which. Food was brought out quickly and always hot like straight off the grill.
Drinks- reasonably priced
Food- Fresh and portions were a decent size. If you're looking for a buffet.. then this isnt the place.
Setting- the lights were dimmed but had a lovely candle at the dinner table - provided a very romantic atmosphere.
Would recommend it to couples but not for large groups.
Delightful Dining. Six of us had a wonderful meal at Malt last night. It was good to see the restaurant almost full on a Tuesday night. The cocktails in the bar were excellent. The bartender recommended Berry Blush and it was perfect. We all enjoyed our meals and the service was professional but friendly and unobtrusive. Garth knew the menu well and gave good advice when asked for help in selecting our meals. We enjoyed the special ambience of Malt and are pleased to have found this gem in Brisbane.
Exquisite food and impeccable service.. The atmosphere was quite lovely with live piano music and the decor is amazing. I think the star for me was the Apple dessert although everything else was a close second.

A fantastic warm atmosphere. I'm glad we were seated in the corner although maybe a little dark it felt so cosy. The live piano was fantastic for the atmosphere and the food speaks for itself...AMAZING! My partner and i werent huge fans of the kill patria oysters being tempura style but it gave us something new to try. Attentive staff (if not a little over the top) and good wine list, overall a great night! We'll be back!
Function Service Issues. After having a lovely dining experience in the resturant and a nice lunch in the bar we booked the cellar for my birthday.
I must say I and some of my guests was VERY disappointed. The service was horrid. The waitress was not accomodating at all and very out of her depth serving a big group. It was really rude that she kept telling us upstairs was fully booked - not my problem! It took a really long time for food - especially mains (We were eating mains well after 10pm).
When I booked I was assured they could squeeze the number for the full alacarte menu...not so but they said the day before they could accomodate one or two meals from regular menu. We tried to order one lamb dish on the night as my friend did not like the other choices and were rudely told this was not possible (surely you can accomodate 1 meal for a group spending thousands of dollars!)
On this plus side the room is really lovely and the food was enjoyed by all.

When writing a food review one commonly ignores the decor unless it is spectacularly poor and detracts from the eating experience. In this case Malt has achieved the opposite. The mix of old and new leads upstairs to a beautifully laid out dining area. It appeared to be rearranged as a matter of course to suit the specific patronage for the night, resulting in an experience that felt uncrowned enough to afford some privacy but with other patrons close enough to provide an excellent ambience above and beyond that of the pianist unobtrusively filling the space with background music. The layout additionally aided the obligatory over-shoulder glances to nearby tables to wallow in dinner envy or bathe in the smug satisfaction of having picked the perfect meal.
The staff were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and engaging. They had an excellent product knowledge and a keen sense to be at the table exactly when needed, all achieved without being in-your-face.
The wine list was excellent with its only possible downfall being that it was nearly outshined by the cocktail menu.
The food was presented with an attention to detail that is in the upper echelons on Brisbane dining. The flavours were perfectly balanced and the components each cooked to perfection. As a rabid carnivore the succulence of the quail entree and lamb main were a pleasure to my senses. Meanwhile across the table genuine options for those in the realms of the vegetarian world were being appreciated with glee. Not just a token gesture to those non-meat-eating folk among us, but a selection of meals that would have set malt as one of Brisbane's best vegetarian restaurants if for some insane reason they decided to ditch the delicious meaty goodness of their main menu. Dessert was equally impressive and the last in the line of excellent food of perfect portion size. Entree and main were enough. Dessert was indulgence. Exactly how it should be.
This would have been enough to secure Malt a place in my list of favourite restaurants but then a step further is taken as one decends the stairs to the bar, only to be greeted with an elegant bar where one can hear oneself speak whilst enjoying some uniquie and exquisite cocktails. The Womble and Marmalade Fix became two favourites by the end of the night.
If urbanspoon had star ratings I would give Malt 5.
Great food!. Dinner here at malt was amazing. the service was wonderful and i personally felt the serving size was spot- on. however the guys did complain about not being completely full afterwards.

Outstanding!. It makes a change to visit a restaurant in Brisbane and get everything you expect in fine dining: great ambience, excellent food, outstanding service and an overall good time. The cocktail menu is huge and we tried several and weren't disappointed. After we were seated at our table we all remarked as to how cozy and European it felt in the dining area. We opted for mains and desserts. All had different mains and chose several sides as they just sounded amazing - and they were! I think if it had been appropriate to lick the plates clean we would have! We'd made room for dessert and were glad we did. The staff are friendly, helpful, efficient, professional and smiled throughout - it was such a breath of fresh air to actually speak to staff who knew the menu and could make recommendations. This place is a true gem and we all remarked that we would love to return and experience it again. Well done!!

Not just another restaurant. My husband and I fell in love with Malt from the very first time we dined there. Combined with the simple, yet elegant decor, this restaurant has a certain warmth and charm sometimes only attainable in buildings with a history (the building/area once housed the Brisbane Markets now at Rocklea). This relaxed venue, when coupled with staff who are friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about the food, makes for a solid foundation for presenting great food...and that too they deliver upon.
I feel, what we have found in Malt is the trifecta - the ability to delivery great food, great service, all at a great venue.
We love this place so much that we held our wedding of 60 people here in May 2012. Our guests have not stopped talking about the great food and fabulous service ever since.
If you want a meal that is 'down to earth', tasty and hearty, accompanied by a good choice of wines and great service (in a relaxed environment) then I can highly recommend Malt for your next night out.

Great place. Went to Malt last week in a group of 5. Great atmosphere, nice decor. Were happy right from the get-go. The only thing that dampened the whole night was the waitress. Not only wasn't she friendly, but she was slow. We had to keep trying to get her attention, firstly for drinks, then to ask questions about the menu, again to get drinks etc etc. We also ended up pouring our own wine.
The food was delicious though and well presented. We each had an entree and main, no-one had room for sweets.
The salmon was delightful, perfectly cooked lovely and moist. Partner had the homemade gnocci with rabbit which he really enjoyed. Faultless food, great place.
We'll give it another try and hopefully that waitress will be gone!

Highly Rated. Im not going to lie to you, Malt Dining is in my top two in Brisbane, Ive eaten in every CBD 5* restaurant for business and pleasure. The staff a well trained and the owner is very hands on with a great attention to detail, the fit out is warm and inviting, At nights the piano playing in the back ground really adds to the ambiance of this wonderful establishment. All the meals are well priced and the wine list is second to none.
My new favourite place. A seriously wonderful place to drink and dine. The staff were attentive but not in your face and they really know their stuff, speaking with passion when explaining the dishes.
The food was new and very exciting and left me dreaming about the flavours that night.
The hero dish for me was the octopus salad that come with the salmon.
Prices were very reasonable.
We had a drink at the bar down stairs and the service and knowledge continued. We sat and played a game of name that bottle.... Very extensive range of spirits and liqueurs.

Lovely. We enjoyed a lovely dinner here over the weekend in this stunning building. Delicious vegetarian meals and stunning wine list. The staff were very attentive and the desserts were AMAZING! A couple of communication errors between staff and timing of desserts and coffees - 8.5/10
Excellent food. Very well thought out dishes with fresh flavours, subtle complexity and very good level of service. Our meal was about $100 per head for 3 courses and 3 rounds of drinks. Our pork terrine was delicious, sous vide duck and salmon mains beautifully cooked and the desserts (apple tart, brownies, soufflé) were very well presented. So far, a leader amongst the "One Hatters".
This place is amazing, I came here for my anniversary with my fiancé and everything from the food service & atmosphere is excellent would recommend it to anyone!

Ambiance Abounds. I just last night visited this establishment.
Deciding on a night out with a friend I trolled the Urbanspoon website for somewhere new to go. As I did start searching on a Saturday afternoon my options were limited, as being a shift worker limits my choices on occasions. I However emailed and called Malt then managed at 3.30pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon managed to get in contact with someone at the restaurant. Got told I would get a call back, after a 10 minute wait a reservation was made. (The staffs attention to detail went to the fact that they know I had also emailed to make a booking - Brilliant)
The Surroundings
The restaurant aptly named "The Attic" was up a small stair case. as the final corner was rounded, I was pleasantly surprised. A adequately open space with tables brilliant placed well apart giving the potential first daters the privacy to use their worst one liners, but not too far as to resemble the sterile environment of most new "fine dining" restaurants have plagued themselves with. Lighting gave a warm feeling and not in your face as to give your unattractive date no hope of scoring. A baby grand sits to the right of the entrance which for a change was not for show, a live piano player graced us with entertainer later on through the night. We were seated next to a window that was open which was a nice change with a beautiful view of the street.
The Service
We were seated and offered the usual options of water, given menus and the wine list with a quick rehearsal of the specials for the evening. The host for the evening easily adapted to us not throwing the usual platitudes of arrogance that you can sometimes get. When the food was bought out each dish was presented with a explanation of what was in front of us, all well versed in each dish. All the staff were attentive and plates were taken promptly and food did not take too long to arrive. The only con I could possibly throw out there was when my wine was finished I was not offered a top up or a different option, which was fine as one wine was my limit for the evening.
The Consumables
Entree: Pan Seared Hervey Bay Scallops, Cauliflower Beignet, Wild Rice Granola, Coriander
Main: Seared Rack & Slow Cooked Shoulder of Lamb Aligot, Black Olive, Baby Vegetables
Dessert: Malt Brownie - Salted Caramel, Chocolate Textures, Peanut Brittle
The Entree was brilliantly cooked and not confused with too many different tastes Well presented and mouth melting material.
The Main was told by our host as the most popular dish it came out and smelt divine. The lamb was cooked medium rare, and also tasted beautiful however presentation was confusing and muddled it seemed that the garnish took over the actual plate. An array of different flavors bombarded the taste buds, though it did taste superb presentation of that particular dish could use a little simplification. However my Cohorts chicken dish was very well presented.
Malt Brownie was a absolute winner we both walked away with smiles on our faces. Presented well with the small amounts of ice-cream offsetting the luscious richness of the brownie. Wow.
The Dollars
Overall I have paid more for meals in the past at other fine dining establishments but the pricing of the meals was reasonable and I did look at the final bill and raised the questioning eyebrow deciding that we may not have been charged for one of our items. However I was wrong to offset the reasonable price i did leave a little tip to say thank-you to a deserving service staff.
The Hammer
In summation Malt was a surprising Brisbane jewel. As said by my counterpart it felt like we were having dinner at a associates house.
I tend to agree, a fine dining experience without the wankery of fine dining attitudes. I would strongly suggest a visit to this establishment for a romantic dinner or a intimate group of friends.
Food and experience is subjective so I will not degrade it will a mark out of 10 but as mentioned above worth a visit.
Lunch. We had steak sandwich with fries and beef cheek at the bar on Friday. Food portion was good, yet regarding the taste, I won't recommend the steak sandwich.
Fantastic food and service for a group dinner. Went to Malt for a group dinner (12+) and had the 3 course set menu. We had a great time there - fantastic food, drinks and the service. Everyone (including international and interstate guests) enjoyed it so much so some of them went back the second time the following week. Keep it up!
Wonderful. One of the best, if not THE best restaurant in Brisbane. I would honestly rate it hire then Restaurant two.
What an amazing experience. Malt has something different than any other Brisbane restaurants (coming from people who eat out ALOT). It is very refreshing. The piano player was spectacular, which made our dining experience an event to remember. I can't describe how beautiful the food was. Entree, main (get the steak!!) and dessert were all amazing, and a big thank you to the lovely lady who looked after us and helped in selecting our wines for each course. We certainly will be back again. I might even pop in this week for a cheeky after work beverage. The downstairs bar looks great. Thanks again for making our anniversary a night to remember.

Received prompt discrete service, excellent simple lunch menu with a few specials able to be delivered quickly, right price, and brilliant fit-out and lighting all make for a great place to catch up with colleagues and clients for a fast lunchtime meeting. Other Brisbane lunch venues should take notice - this is how you do it right. Well done to the owners and staff. We'll be back regularly.

Amazing dining. Went for a Valentine's Dinner toward the end of service and was blown away. The setting is elegant and modern, without being intimidating and the service was professional, warm and prompt without being intrusive.
The food was generously served, innovative variants of customary fine dining dishes and produced with finesse. The confit octopus and the pork tenderloin & jowl with coffee soil were stand out dishes.
Best recent foray into Brisbane dining.
Loved it, story end.. I sat down in the wine cellar for a work function recently and wow - what a cool space! We had about 20 people for dinner and really all I spoke to really loved the service and the food. I didn't order the wine, but I will say it tasted fantastic and the waitress was very much into making sure I had a "bottomless" glass.
I had the sous vide duck which was lovely, some complained that the portion was too small it's a duck breast, how big were you really expecting it to be?
It was really good all around, the space was fun yet classic and I can't wait to go back to try it again.
Fantastic food and service. Headed up to the Attic to have dinner late on a Thursday night. The place was abuzz with chatter. Food presentation was lovely. Waitress was very pleasant and polite.
Only downside was that the Creme Brulee was too burnt, but other than that no complaints.
Fantastic! They managed a large function with delicious & plentiful canapés. The service was friendly & highly organized & the food was yum! Especially liked the mushroom risotto & the buttermilk chicken. I also love the ambience of the venue. I will definitely be back - worth every cent!

Hot spot for Friday drinks. Popped in with 3 colleagues for a quick drink at about 3:30pm. Interior is uber cool, looks like the architect has a flare for city bars - think exposed brick, dark timers and mood lighting. Staff appear highly trained but layed back enough to make you feel instantly welcome. Upstairs wasnt open so i couldnt take a sneak peep, so settle into the window seats at the front entrance for a cosy and private drinking nook. Would love to come back and try their lunchtime menu too - all are under $20.

I have a confession to make. Despite its existence in Brisbane for the past 3 years, I had not been to Malt Dining before last night. But that is part of the beauty of Good Food Month - it pushes you to try out new restaurants and get nicely sloshed in the process. As part of this month's foodie celebrations, Malt hosted a Behind Enemy Lines dinner, which is a name that kind of strikes fear into your heart and I half expected to be greeted by chefs with a slotted spoon in one hand and a bayonet in the other. The experience was warm and welcoming though- thankfully the complete opposite of warfare! The restaurant itself is country-cozy, with dim lighting and exposed wooden beams. It's a nice change to the sleek modernism that is continually dotting the Brisbane skyline. Paired with dinner were a range of wines from Granite Belt winery Witches Falls . Being situated in Queensland is an instant challenge for any winery; this state is not known for its grape-growing. I honestly was not sure what to expect from these wines, but they turned out to be the surprise of the night for me. Balanced and interesting, they more than did justice to the food. To kick things off, we were given a gorgeous Tanqueray Cocktail with Apple Juice, Pineapple Juice and Basil which was a really nice touch. To keep us off the floor, we also started with a Tempura Prawn with Pineapple Yoghurt and Corn Basil Aranchini. The aranchini was served with a 2013 Co-inoculated Verdelho which was probably my least favourite out of the Witches Falls wines that evening, but that really says more about how much I liked their other wines rather than not liking this one. Fruity on the nose and with a light pineapple palate, it was a very nice opening glass. As of only a few weeks ago, Malt had appointed a new head chef so this dinner was a pretty big deal as a chance to show off some potential new menu items. Even though the food wasn't as great as I was expecting, the atmosphere of the restaurant was perfect. One thing I have to add is the service which was questionable. When we were seated it was hard to get attention from the waiters for our orders to be taken. It was good while we were actually eating, they weren't too attentive but still came over to check on us occasionally. When it came to the bill and we were ready to leave they took a little too long to take the bill with my card in it so I we just walked to the front counter and still had to wait for someone to attend to us. I'm not too fussed on service unless their obviously rude but it wasn't that busy. Perhaps they were short on staff, who knows. You can judge whether it was a hit or miss yourselves because I'm just chilling on the fence. :)
I am a slow learner but I get there eventually. Even in just a few hours this morning I learnt a whole heap. Firstly do not eat burn your face off chilli the night before a speed session. It tasted amazing but your stomach will feel every bite the next morning as you attempt to run at any pace. Secondly turn up to speed on time so you don’t have your own mini speed session to catch up to the group. Actually I was on time but the chilli issue arose as I was warming up. #runnersproblems Thirdly be ready for whatever comes at you when you post photos like this and say it is your running coach…. I’m scared. And finally you can get ready for work, whip up some eggs, cherry tomato, spinach and avocado and make it to the bus in record time. My other amazing feat this week is pull ups. I am still on banded pull ups but I did manage to do a few sets on the skinniest orange band. Which is almost body weight equivalent! I will master a pull up eventually! It’s my BDAY! and theres no better way to celebrate than to splash out on some fine dining. We decided on this occasion to spare no expense and go for all three courses. I chose the terrine, wagyu beef cheeks and apple tart and my wife decided on the quail, duck and creme brulee. First to the atmosphere and service. The restaurant setting wasn’t anything new or amazing but it set a relaxing mood with the brick walls, white table cloths, dim lights and large artwork. Service was top notch as expected with this class of restaurant and the waitress/waitors would go into extreme detail of each of the components of the dish when they brought them out. Both entrees were pretty good. The terrine was tasty and the quail tart was pretty interesting. Mains were also well done, the wagyu and beef cheeks were cooked really well and it was interesting to have the different textures on the same dish. Both desserts were also really tasty. I would definitely recommend the experience to my family and friends… but I do look forward to trying other restaurants before coming back :)
There are some things to like about Malt Dining with some of the dishes being well thought out and clearly well presented and tasty, but there are some elements that disappointed. I can understand a menu having some items that don't gel perfectly for my tastes, after all you need to cater to all tastes. However, I get quite disappointed when some key techniques go badly and food is over cooked, even worse is when it seems to be only me impacted! Also, if a restaurant is going to use an online booking system, it's critical for it to work well. We are not sure what happened on the day as we had an electronic confirmation but we almost didn't have our annual Christmas lunch and that would have been a shame.
One of the best restaurant experiences I've had, no delusions, I am in awe of Malt Dining. A celebration was in order, and a good opportunity to tick off a restaurant on my list of 'must dos'. Malt is located on Market Street, Brisbane, and offers the ultimate food, wine and dining experience with a cellar, bar and restaurant dispersed over three levels.
For entree, i myself had the scallops and the fatty had the quail, the scallops were cooked well, but its combination with the wild rice granola which is the key to this dish i believe! it was just that little bit of crunch and saltiness from the wild rice which just made the taste in this entree from good, to really good. The quail, while it was enjoyable i didn't quite think it was much of a standout compared to the scallops! (being bias here! hehe)
Just around the corner from Waterfront Place is this hidden gem of a venue. Enter this iconic heritage building and behold - a luxury three level bar and dining experience comprised of a bar, a restaurant and a cellar for private events. Each level has its own distinct feel to it but the overall atmosphere is intimate and exudes old world glamour.

My old office was right around the corner from malt and my colleagues and I found any excuse to go there to enjoy a great meal and atmosphere in a stunning setting. The specials board is always what captures my attention and I can thank it for one of the best prawn laksas I have ever had! But the steak sandwich is a consistent favourite, the lavin bread is melded together with beautiful gruyere cheese and caramalised onions. The braised beef cheeks, placed on perfectly creamy mash are also a winning dish. Price: all meals are are between $15-$20.
Hmm... My chicken breast was quite dry unfortunately. It is a mixed bag because my friend had the tender chicken breast. Putting that aside, the sauce was amazing and I love the potato galette.
The SO did a little research and insisted that we should have the ‘Malt’ Brownie for dessert. This isn’t like any brownie I’ve ever had and I struggle to really call it a “brownie”. If anything, it’s a brownie sandwich with malt ice-cream and beautifully presented with a range of textures and flavours to balance the sweet and some salty.
The ambience of the restaurant is exquisite. I absolutely loved the brick walls and candle-lit tables. We found it hard to decide on the food, as all the menu items sounded irresistibly delicious.
Malt is the first restaurant that I've tried in a long time that has managed to really impress me. I'm getting to the point where most restaurants are variations of the same but Malt stood out in delivering truly delicious and well-executed food. There were no gastronomical flairs or stage elements to the meal but I wasn't found wanting. Our waiter was personable and helpful. What else can we hope for in a restaurant?
My very first visit to Malt Dining happened many years ago for a friend’s birthday dinner but I finally got the chance to come back again for a great meal last night!
We ordered a good spread off the menu to share around the table.
Each main dish had such a distinguishable range of flavours that complimented the ingredients so well! Loved everything we tasted : the tangy, the sweet, the charcoal burn, everything! Kudos to the Chef for creating and serving an amazing palette on a plate.
I was really amazed by how delicious the food in here was.My most favorite was the wagyu beef brisket. It was cooked perfectly and the flavor was just magical in my mouth 👌🏻.I wish the serving could’ve been more. The side dishes were also delicious and well thought of. The salad and the potato sauce was really yum. To think that they’re just sides. I just didn’t enjoy the mango sorbet dessert. I think it’s an acquired taste. The mango flavor was yum but then when you mix it, i just didn’t enjoy the spicy aftertaste and the black pudding mixture. The serving was just slow on that night because there’s not much staff on that weekday and there were a lot of us but the food made up for it
Outstanding food. Hands down the best food I have eaten in fine dining. We had the set menu and swapped out the quail for the pork belly and paid a little more for it - worth every cent. The flavours were devine and every dish was completely different from the last. We absolutely loved, what we referred to as "a sneaky cream dollop" on most plates. I have no idea what each dollop was but man was it a show stopper. The coconut labneh? Wow!!!

This time, we just wanted to catch up over nice light dishes at a cozy space. Malt provides all that, especially during the weekdays.
Awesome experience for lunch today. A huge selection of drinks including craft beers, wines and of course whiskey. My wife and I tried 4 different dishes on the menu and all were impeccable. Beautifully presented and balanced! A big tick to the Chefs! Our waiter was also fantastic even though by himself nothing was a bother and service was excellent!
Had the 6 course degustation dinner with paired wines last night. Food and wine were both sensational. Only thing I would add is I would of loved to of known more about the wine they served and why it was paired with each dish.

Having been a patron of Malt bar for many years, I finally decided to give the upstairs restaurant a go. Being welcomed by more of the dark stained wood and gentle ambiance of the main bar, along with familiar staff, the restaurant is mmediately identifiable as an extended parts of a whole. It's a comforting, welcoming, joyful fine dining atmosphere and menu.
I opted for the 6 course taster menu and it was an absolute delight, as well as fantastic value for money. The knockout dish for me was the wontons, perfectly balanced in flavour and texture, the sauce a revelation of savoury goodness married perfectly with the creaminess of the filling and the crunch of the walnuts. All of the other dishes were wonderful still and a unique experience for each. Would definitely recommend the brownie for dessert to share. The smoky miso caramel was moreish and a great contrast to the sweetness of the rest of the dish.
Staff as always are helpful, attentive, and give excellent recommendations. From the kitchen to front of house, it's obvious that everyone knows their current menu back to front.
Each dish arrived succulent, crisp, and brimming with fresh, seasonal, and artful flavour, and with such a nice drink selection, go for the prearranged accompaniment wines or select a few whiskys, cocktails, etc from the menu, or just ask for a recommendation.
I will absolutely be returning for more. Perfect for indulgence on your own, as a couple, or for a special occasion for a larger group.
