Last year November Public relaunched with new owners, new GM and new menu (Peruvian fusion). The food itself was beautiful with lots of flavour. Every single dish we had was presented beautifully and tasted great. We tried the Peruvian style ceviche which was lovely, the scallops were perfect, the snapper and pork dishes were cooked to perfection. Public restaurant itself has such a relaxed vibe. Great place to just simply hang or even hold a function in one of their private rooms. Great place that has lovely food and drinks.

Cocktails were really tasty, served up by a really attentive and friendly bar dude. Forgot to ask his name. 5 stars for service. The wagyu brisket tacos were YUMMZ. Would prefer some acoustic music tho. Will definitely return!

This is a modern looking restaurant with a equally modern menu. The challenge with the menu is to translate what each dish mean. For example KFD is obviously kangaroo floss with daikon. Seriously though the menu is tasty once you work out how the entree sized meals and share plates work. Back to KFD, I was expecting to taste more crunch but it didn't happen, the duck leg was well cooked and served on the bone. The share plate of pork comes with 6 decent sized pork belly pieces each with a layer of fat in the middle. The pork has a thin crunch spice layer on the skin and bottom of the belly.

We ordered the choc brownie and lychee desserts. Both are winners with a mixture of foam, dried bits of something, ice cream and or cream.

Staff are welcoming, service is prompt and food comes out quickly. I found the atmosphere a little noisy - and even with 2 guests at my table we struggled to hear each other.

(Sweet potatoes were slightly burnt on the bottom, hence bitter. Corn was delicious)

Regardless of how busy they were, we waited a good 3 minutes at reception. Lack of waiters or awareness. Only after seated down, the attendant was friendly, helpful and excited to assist.

[Verdict]
Felt that some dishes were mediocre, whereas some elevated successfully. Will recommend for its experience and will return to try cocktails and other mains.

I hate to leave such a good review because I don’t want to make it hard to get a reservation but this place is amazing! From the worms for appetisers to the Ants for dessert, every dish is delicious! I just wish they had a selection of “normal” (non-craft) beers. Could it kill you to stock Great Northern?

I went here for dinner last night with 4 other people and it was fantastic! We had the cashews & worms, kingfish ceviche, kangaroo tartare, octopus, KFD, turkey, brisket and fries and sweet potatoes as sides. Everything was delicious, I really had no negatives. The octopus was my favourite - it was so incredibly tender. It was the perfect amount of food for 5 people and the service was great too! Highly recommend!

Public is a great space perched over a tributary of Brisbane's legal precinct.  The bar is functional and big and perfect for a pre prandial drink - but the dining rooms are where it really happens.  The food is very very pleasing and broad in genre - from insects to a shoulder of lamb, via the alien creatures octupus.  We often have a working lunch among colleagues - or a post curial debriefing lunch  - with some medication.  We have never eaten a bad dish and the salads are a standout.

Enjoyed mid week lunch here with interstate guests including a chef.  Menu was contemporary with similar notes to Gerard's and Detour. Smoked butter with sourdough is the go to start these days. Love smoked butter. The octopus, smoked potato and harissa was well executed and the octopus was tender. The barramundi, green papaya and coconut was beautiful. Again cooked well and lovely flavours. The lamb with pumpkin humus and radicchio was another hit but it tasted like a fair bit of unexpected mustard was in the humus. Brussel sprouts with sage and mustard  was a great side dish. Service was ok but not proactive. Waiter should have known cheeses on platter we had to finish and renewed/offered wine as bottle finished during meal without us asking.

We had an event here in the private dining room upstairs and it was exceptional. The staff made us feel so welcome. The food - uh-mazing (only remembered to take photos of nibbles + dessert, mains were gone so quickly). We ordered pretty much all of the small plates; the curry peanuts and warmed olives are awesome drinking food if you were just going for a tipple. We had the KFD 'Kentucky-Fried Duck' and it was as ridiculous as it sounds, for mains we had the pork and lamb - and desserts; do yourself a favour and order all 3 (plus the cheese, while you're at it) - they were a bit spesh. Thank you so much Public for being so warm and accomodating with my 9 wk old baby too; made the event so much more relaxed for me!

If you want pork belly this is your place!!  Dessert wasnt bad but nothing to rave about.  Nice environment and good bar.  Can get loud if situated near bar so request table near back of restaurant of you want a quieter night.

Had a business lunch meeting & chose to have a tapas style lunch. We chose a number of dishes for the three of us. Good food, in particular KFD. Service was a bit slower as the guests left & we were one of only a couple of tables left. Only feedback was that the dishes came out with 4 pieces in each dish when there were 3 of us sharing; I wonder if they could have suggested upsizing to 6 for each dish (obviously for a higher price) so we could all have a couple of pieces of each?

Public, What can I say, it was a truly amazing restaurant, loved the food ! Loved the vibes, had very good customer service, and an excellent description of each dish without using a script, the Kentucky fried duck was cooked to perfection! I would always recommend this place for a date or even to dine in 10/10

Food was spectacular. We had the group banquet so got to taste a few of their main dishes available on the menu. The chicken with goats cheese and carrots was my fave - great flavours. Pork belly was perfectly cooked. The slow cooked beef with slaw and chipotle was also delish. KFD was crisp and tender. Service was great, never wanted for anything. Will definitely return with more friends to spread the word about Public.

It can be easy to not even notice Public unless you’ve heard of it before, tucked away on the first floor of an office building on George Street in a quiet corner of the city. Once inside though, you feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem for first time. Public is a cross between a cocktail and wine bar and a fine dining tapas-style restaurant. It has the vibe of a classy jazz club throughout with dark timber furnishings, dim lighting and a scattering of mounted taxidermy, a full size peacock is perched above the main bar. This carried through to the drinks menu which was a quaint leather-wrapped booklet.

Fantastic and interesting food and good prices. We had a group of ten and a serving of the pork belly, jerk chicken, slow cooked lamb and accompanying sides fed the lot of us. Excellent value, great staff and some really well done and innovative food, highly recommended.

Had dinner at this one-hatted restaurant for my birthday celebration. I loved the place full of happiness vibe and packed with diners with enjoyable facial expressions. It was busy but the service was attentive and proficient. Ordered dishes as tapas style to share, I am much appreciated the chef's invention on dishes. It was the first time that I had the pork crackling in such way; however, the surprise should be on the KFD (Korean Fried Duck) which gave me the impression of a nice version of KFC....In addition, the wagyu was done perfectly matched with the onions and bone marrow and was marvellous to go with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. Overall experience was an unforgettable birthday dinner.

A good solid meal, the KFD (Korean Fried Duck) and beef brisket were the right choices. But the service was pushy, and for a 3/4 empty restaurant it's hard to understand why. I think I would come back for a drink at the bar and it was worth it to try the KFD.

The first time I noticed the term "KFD", I was so slow witted that I did not even think of Kentucky Fried.   That was because this is on the menu of the Public, a rather ambient dining and watering hole at the quiet end of George Street , as far away from the Treasury Casino as you can get.   Located up an escalator, the Public is on the first floor, exudes suggestions of a private club with just the right level of subdued lighting.  I can see groups at tables perhaps seeking refuge from the world after a long day  - business colleagues, middle aged mates, huddles of women, couples and families.Oh yes, back to KFD and this Public version of deep fried and spicy battered duck.   Duck dishes are my weakness I admit, but I was distracted then by other interesting offerings in the menu that evening.  Spatchcock - yes.    Belly pork - a definite YES!    Cocktails - oh ya. The drinks list is generous  - a potential and actual place for business gatherings.

The drinks list is generous  - a potential and actual place for business gatherings.We started with relaxing drinks, I chose the low glass Malabar Crush, with hints of spices and getting into a comfy zone. The best refresher is perhaps the Cucumber Collins.    The strongest offering is possibly the Charred Monk, with a foundation of Dom Benedictine,  La Goya sherry and Bowmore's, then tempered with a twist of Jerry Thomas bitters.   The Public Nuisance may appear light in spirit, with Elderflower, strawberry, cucumber and sparkling wine, but do not forget there is gin.   On an interesting note, there is egg white in A Parting Gift, which is also graced by Amaro Nonino, Bourbon and peached tea.And you can have your Pina Colada too.....For food starters,  I recommend the south east Asian spinach (Kangkong) served with worms;  the Emu Tartare with mustard and the duck egg, runny served on toast and enhanced with truffle.

This is the second time we've dined at Public. The first was fabulous and one of the best dining experiences I'd had all year. This time we were taking friends and had raved about the food and service. We weren't disappointed!!! Another exceptional night.....the food we had was divine and the service impeccable.

Outstanding customer service & even better food.
They were clearly busy last Friday when got there but we were seated within minutes. The guy taking care of us was super friendly and attentive. It was the 2nd we had dined there however we didn't leave disappointed at all.

Great experience here. Nice big open space with classic and understated decor. The food kind of passes itself as tapa/share plates but at $26-30+ that might be a bit too redefining. Regardless it is beautifully presented and full of flavours. Choices for the night were KFP (deep fried pork), a carrot dish and a lamb salad. Happy to have any and all of them again. Dessert was pannacotta. Close to the best I have had I think. Delicate poised just on the set side, once it was opened up it oozed deliciously across the plate. The rich vanilla flavour was accompanied by lightly toffeed hazelnuts which added a perfect texture. A great classic dessert.

Public is amazing if you are wanting fantastic food and flavours. The portions are smaller which is great for sharing. My partner and I had the worm entrée and the salmon which was suppose to be with ants, and the market fish. The worm dish was amazing they taste very nutty and worth a try if you like a Asian flavours and the salmon was raw and amazing. The market fish was just beautiful with such great flavour. Lastly we had the chocolate dessert. This was by far on of the best choc desserts I have had. The balance was perfect and with the salted caramel fairy floss it added the perfect amount of salt to the dish. The only downside is that this is our second visit and both times the ants have not been available so don't have your hopes up for them. All in all great service and experience.

Love the relaxed yet classy vibes of this restaurant/wine bar. I was drawn to this place because of their neon escalators but what I discovered inside was even more trendy. The high ceiling, friendly staff and chilled atmosphere was exactly what I needed after my flight. The dishes are clearly made for sharing and they offer quite a unique selection - I even ate ants! Nonetheless, it was a great find and I would most likely revisit if I happen to be in Brisbane again.

A great fine dining option in Brisbane CBD.  The menu is unique and eclectic with choices ranging from Seared Scallops through to Emu Tartare and all designed to be shared.  On that note, if you are a fan of tartare, the emu is a must-do! Simply put it is the best tartare I have had to date and in my opinion is peerless!

Service is impeccable, with staff having impeccable knowledge of the dishes which comes from them actually having eaten the food and not just being drilled in what to say.

I found the ambience of Public to be very intriguing.  Like most fine dining options, the lighting is on the low side which gives the impression of privacy however there is a pleasant level of noise bleed from the surrounding tables which provides a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

Reservations are recommended and I would recommend you put Public on your list of restaurants to dine at if it isn't there already!

Came with 3 others, ordered the salmon with ants, pork belly with kimchi, wagyu horseradish, and the brisket avocado chipotle. The salmon was pleasant tasting, and it was started off as an appetiser. Next was the pork belly, extremely well prepared, it was complemented by the kimchi magnificently. The wagyu horseradish was excellent, soft, tender and succulent and the horseradish provided a very nice distraction. The brisket came last, it was like a Mexican style pulled pork dish. It came with a taco bread, feta salad, smashed avo, and a chipotle sauce. Combining it all gave rise to a superb dish. All in all, I had an extremely good tasting experience and 5/5 will be back again to try all the other dishes!! P.S. public's dishes are for sharing, so remember to bring a couple of more people!!

Favourite restaurant in Brisbane, the food here is always outstanding and always served in a timely manner. KFD is a personal favourite, something the wife and I always get. Every time we have attended there has always been a change in the menu giving us something new to try. Thanks Public!!!

A real dining pleasure - you must try the fossilised carrot and their signature KFD, but the wagyu was incredible too. Public has a well-chosen wine list to complement. At times I felt a little overserviced - they replaced our cutlery four times during the night - but that's still better than the alternative. Highly recommended.

We had a group booking on the Saturday night in the private dining room and I couldn't be more impressed. Food was fantastic and they catered well to dietary requirements even though we were on a banquet. Service was really good and unobtrusive. Highly recommend and will be going back to test more of the menu items!

Public is hidden away on the second floor of 400 on George, so you may not be aware it exists unless you work in the area. It's a great place to have a nice drink after work, but it's not the cheapest restaurant/bar around.The menu consists of some unusual items, some that will either have you screaming to try, or screaming in horror! The KFD (Kentucky fried duck) is delicious with a nicely seasoned coating. It's not large, but its a must try. The beef brisket tacos to share is great, has plenty of meat and would be a handful to eat alone. It's usually pretty packed on Friday afternoons when the local workers come for drinks, so keep that in mind if you want a quiet dinner.

Went to the Public on Friday night after a big work week. It's a quaint, modern restaurant situated on Level 1 on 400 George Street. Our waiter was well versed and knowledgable in her food and wine, making suggestions for the table. Over the course of the night we had emu tartare, salmon black ants and apple, char siu chicken and the Texas brisket. The highlight of the night was definitely the Salmon. Cooked perfectly and paired with those black ants made an amazing combination. The ants explode with heat and flavour! The emu tartare was a close second. Usually quite tough, it was smooth and enjoyable. I was disappointed with the Texas brisket, full of flavour but it was quite tough. All up, immaculate service, decent food and a warm ambience.

Public has a very intimate feel and is a great place to dine at for a date night. We enjoyed our visits to public this year, finding the service to be quick and the menu to be pleasantly different. Our favourite 3 dishes were the cauliflower mornay, wagyu beef dish and chicken dish. Service on the first visit was great, the waitress explained every dish that we ordered. Great quality food at reasonable price.

Tenderize your evening with a fancy dinner at the classy and cosy restaurant & bar radiating with chill vibes. Braise with sincerely welcoming waitstaff to enhance your dining experience and to recommend highlights on the menus ideal to suit your taste buds. As a “fine dining” restaurant, portion sizes are expectedly smaller but the great variety amongst the small group of us was extremely satisfying.

I often dine alone as I travel for work and that can sometimes put me off restaurants that specialise in share dishes. I'm glad I gave Public a go. Delicious cocktail, yummy food and above all, fantastic service. Aida was lovely and knowledgable, offering helpful suggestions to me and I could hear the same at neighbouring tables. I had food envy looking at the table next to me so I think I'll be back to try more from the menu next time I'm in Brisbane.

I've never felt more welcome at a restaurant before. The staff really go out of their way to ensure that everyone has an amazing dining experience. The food is also amazing and beautifully presented. I would definitely come back here again and try some of the other dishes on the menu.

Public Brisbane at the forefront of innovation. Tucked away in the corner of the Brisbane’s vibrant CBD, a restaurant by the name of Public Brisbane can be found. It so happened that I had the great fortunate of dining at this place. Upon a glance at the menu I realized that this was something out of the ordinary, something special. It was a restaurant upon the edge of innovation, at the forefront of fusion cuisine, the first of pioneers.

Salmon, Apple, Black Ants. Kentucky Fried Duck. Fossilised Carrot. Wallaby Tartare. The words leapt out of the piece of paper in front of me but one caught my eye in particular. The Salmon, apple and black ants. I had seen black ants used by only one other chef and that was none other than Rene Redzepi, four times winner of the World’s Best Restaurant and the man with a 60,000 waiting list for a pop-up. His shrimp and black ants dish was described as terrifying, but beautiful like the ocean after the storm. I couldn’t wait for it. The ants were meant to be replicating the sourness of citrus via the natural formic acid they possessed.

I felt like an adventurer venturing forth in new uncharted jungle territory as I scooped the ant-covered piece of salmon towards my mouth. It was not everything I expected and also everything I didn’t expect. I could feel each scrape of the ants legs of the top of my mouth and somewhere in the back of my imagination I wondered what if any were still alive. It was a "terrifying then relief" feeing, like the sensation you'd get after a blackout caused by a storm rather than the beauty of the ocean. The pressurized apple and apple jelly on the side was a perfect compliment to the saltiness of the salmon, a refreshment for my overstressed taste buds.

Besides the ants, the Hawaiian potato curry was a disappointment. It was a healthy alternative being gluten free and all, but too mushy and the lychees were all but a weak attempt at balance. You'd wonder whether they thought you had a set of dentures and couldn't chew properly. The duck egg inside the truffle toast was amazing and the highlight of the night, melting out of the toast like an egg fondant of sorts.

Taste: 3/5
Verdict: Worth a trip.

All the ingredients - but something missing. We had family up from Sydney staying for the weekend and they chose Public for dinner on Friday night. Firstly let me say that the fitout and ambience of Public is superb - almost had a bit of a Melbourne-vibe to the play ... somewhat industrial with open ceiling spaces, lots of glass and warm lighting - I loved it from the moment I walked in. The place was full and had a buzz going, but it wasn't noisy, we were still able to talk at normal levels - so that was a huge plus (I'm finding more and more restaurants that are a little industrial in design have serious noise issues - I'm looking at you Jamie's Italian).

Anyway we were seated quickly - a table of four adults and two kids (to be honest not really a place to take kids but they had already eaten and just shared some of our chips and played quietly on their ipads). Menu's were on the table and drink orders taken quickly. We decided to each pick a share plate and get a couple of sides. This worked out well - although my usual whinge about share plates is that why oh why are there always odd numbers of items on the plate i.e. three bits of chicken - how many tables of three do you see eating out? I really wish places that do the share plate thing put enough items on each plate to cater for the number of people at the table - charge a bit more accordingly - I don't mind!!! Otherwise you are cutting food in half etc - it's truly annoying.

Enough of that. We ordered the scallop ceviche, KFD, slow-cooked brisket with tortillas and soft-shelled crab - with sides of salt and vinegar fries and minted peas and feta. The ceviche was delicious - very small serve - but lovely and fresh, a great start. Then came the KFD - yummmm, loved it, beautifully cooked duck with a tasty crunchy coating. Next up was the soft-shelled crab - delicious - not the best I've had, but certainly right up there. Lastly we had the brisket - this was probably the most disappointing - it certainly melted in the mouth but was lacking flavour for some reason - along with the coleslaw it was served with (which also came with the duck) ... the coleslaw just didn't have any flavour ... it was odd. The spicy tomato sauce that came with the brisket saved the dish a little but I was just disappointed - it should have been much much better. The chips were delish although they could have used a bit more s&p seasoning and the peas/feta were good.

Overall I enjoyed the meal but there was just something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. I will likely go back again at some stage because I loved the ambience and would like to try some of the other dishes, so I guess worth a second try.

Fantastic lunch today. The beef brisket is a delicious dish, as was the chicken etc with sour cream & corn. Wagyu with peas etc incredible. Only disappointing dish of the day was the lamb.
Tried four different cocktails and they were all amazing. Great service. Will be back.

Review title is required. This is a seriously gorgeous place to eat. An airy, high ceilinged space with green trellises and a lovely view over George St. Attentive staff, nice wine list, and a majestic stuffed peacock above the bar.

My kingfish in miso was tender and delicious, a small-ish serve though. I still can't decide whether the side of potato topped with crab was brilliant or weird. It's pricey, but a lovely place for a leisurely business dinner, a special occasion, or an indulgent snack after work.

Wow. Such a beautiful venue and food. Our kingfish was AH MAY ZING. Like a party in our mouth, although the KFD was cool and is frequently recommended here, please try the fish. We also loved the soft shell crab. The brisket was tasty but I couldn't finish mine as we were too full! I can't wait to go back and try more. The service was a little hot and cold as we were sometimes left waiting a while but they were very pleasant and helped out with some dietary requirements, remembering id asked about no raw egg mayo after I'd forgotten to specify it on ordering!

Wonderful. This is my happy place - I'd eat here everyday if I could. The drinks are great, the staff are without par in Brisbane and the food is utterly amazing. Everyone is treated like a VIP here, the staff will always go the extra mile to make your meal perfect. The back tables get a little loud (acoustics from the low wood ceiling I suspect), but if that's the sole complaint - you know they're doing everything else very right!

Beautiful restaurant and amazing service!. It was my 30th last weekend and I decided to celebrate by having a romantic dinner with my partner. I made a reservation, but unfortunately overlooked a confirmation call that afternoon. However, when we arrived the manager was very accommodating and welcoming. We were given the option of one of the regular tables or waiting for a small amount of time for one that had a stunning view and was tucked away in a very private location. We decided to wait at the bar and had a few cocktails to start the night off.

The cocktails were sublime and we both enjoyed them immensely. After a short wait we were shown to our table and it truly was the best one in the restaurant, for which we were very grateful. I was surprised when the manager offered complimentary french champagne to celebrate my birthday which really was a nice thoughtful touch.

We ordered the duck egg and truffle toast, the octopus and the famous brisket with a side of brussel sprouts, onion and bacon. We could not fault any one of the dishes and we struggled picking a favorite. I was amazed that I loved the brussel sprouts as all my life I have hated them with passion, so it really opened my mind in perhaps trying to cook with it in the future myself. The brisket was slow cooked and to die for and the octopus dish had a variety of fresh herbs and a lovely chargrilled component. We honestly thought we would order more, and wanted to try more on the menu but were simply too full. Though somehow we managed to finish off a lovely Camembert cheese platter, however my one criticism would be that for the amount of crackers and apples for the small slice of cheese did not make sense and we were left with delicious crackers but nothing to put on them (and we were very sparing with the cheese).

The atmosphere and service were impeccable, the waiters were very quick to fill our water or to whisk away empty cocktail glasses and having the manager that was so friendly and polite really made the restaurant stand out from any other in Brisbane from memory. Thank you for the lovely evening.

Fabulous fine dining food done differently! We ordered 4 dishes at an average of $18 each (for 2 people) and they were outstanding. There was a generous but calculated portion on each plate, enough to split two or three ways. Quick, professional and attentive service, nice atmosphere, and extensive drinks list. Finally, one of few places in Brisbane where you can get great food, drinks and a wicked atmosphere. It was (unfortunately) very quite on a Thursday night, but i blame that on the "school night" culture of queenslanders... It deserves a better reception! We absolutely love Aida, she was on the ball, and very honest & helpful with choosing our dishes. The brisket was fantastic, and the fig cheesecake is to die for!!

We went to Public for dinner for my birthday. We made a 8pm booking but arrived early. We were greeted and offered to go straight to our table or to the bar, we chose to enjoy a cocktail in the bar. The bar staff were very well informed and offered to make us a special cocktail based on what we liked. We ordered duck egg truffle toast, scallops, Texas brisket & KFD for dinner. We really enjoyed and recommend both the duck egg and scallops. We had friendly & professional service throughout and fantastic food. Overall we really enjoyed our night at Public and will definately be back.

Best food in Brisbane!. My husband and I went to Public for my birthday on 22 March 2014. IT WAS LIFE CHANGING. The food is absolutely amazing, we both agreed it was some of the best food we have ever had, definitely the best in Brisbane! Prices are very reasonable and the drinks are great. Forget KFD, get the brisket!. We’d read mostly great reviews for this place so we decided to try if out for my wife’s birthday. It was midweek so we didn’t book and got in no problems.
Having read so many great things about the Kentucky fried duck we had to try that, we also had the Texas Brisket and the Hawaiian Potato Curry.
The duck cooked perfectly and was tasty, but it wasn’t as special as we were expecting, not worth the hype really. The beef on the other hand was amazing much more hype worthy than the duck as was the curry, they were definitely the star dishes and would have them again without a doubt we washed that down with some fizz and all in all was pretty good value.
We’d definitely go back, but with so many great restaurants still to try in Brisbane we probably won’t be rushing back just yet.

We came to Public after a recomendation from a friend and we were not disappointed. Service was fast and friendly and food was delicious and beautifully presented. KFD lives up to its reputation and tataki is amazing!! We also had the pumpkin (on the recomendation of our waitress)- macadamia 'snow' is delicious; and the scallops were perfectly cooked! Our waitress was knowledgable and attentive. We will definitely be back!

Finding its way. This is one of these venues which does not know how to fill itself up. Chrome and steel and pot plants - like the set of an 80s sitcom. Fairly typical Brisbane sort of bar in that way. The food is pretty average and overpriced, not unexpected in the vast wasteland that is the the Brisbane CBD. Don't go there for the food. Go there for the drinks. The bar is the best thing about it. Full of chubby boozed up barristers on a Friday night but if you can ignore them (and, lets face it, everyone can ignores Brisbane barristers these days) in cheap suits braying loudly with red wine stains round their mouths. Not a good crowd but keep going, ignore the strange layout and the Friday night lower middle class crowd because the staff are excellent. Very good drinks served by experts. I go there once a month and they still remember my drink. They know about drinks and can talk to you about them and are not snobby and wierd like most most Brisbane bar and waiting staff. They are clearly professionals. Very impressed. Critically, they know how to make a martini. It is kind of an ugly and uncomfortable place but the drinks and the staff making them and make it worth while.

Need to clarify the meaning of a sitting to some staff.. Food great, service patchy. Salt n Vinegar French Fries were the high light! We were booked For an 8pm sitting however by 8.45 and 3 requests for our table we were still sitting at the bar. We were told that they couldn't move the Friday drinkers to the bar or they'd have 2 sets of disgruntled customers ie us who had a booking and the drinkers who were sitting at our table from the 6pm session. But we were welcome to eat at the bar ??? Our waiter could not understand a sitting is a sitting!! When we were finally shown to our table, our night greatly improved. Beautiful food and to make amends our drinks bill was on the house. Shame the waiter kept arguing the point that he was right about the sitting incident at the table, at the bar and as we were leaving. Lucky the food was so good it put the shine back on our night.

Came here for a pre-show dinner and was absolutely blown away by the great service and attention to detail. Upon arrival we were seated and our coats/scarves taken. A small thing, I know, but appreciated none the less. Our waiter gave us our menu and left us to it while we happily chatted and enjoyed our wine. We struggled to decide on our menu items (which are designed to be shared) but the waiter was super-helpful and talked us through each item and gave his recommendations as to how much food he thought we would need. It took us AGES to decide but we got there in the end. Loved the curry and the scallops. We choose the KFD (Kentucky fried duck) based on other recommendations but this was probably the least favourite of all we choose. I found it a bit overpriced for the portion size too. That's pretty much the only negative to an otherwise awesome evening! Because we took so long to order we were going to be running late for our show, but after a quick word to our waiter our remaining dishes were brought to the table pronto. It's definitely the kind of place to linger for a while and enjoy each dish - I wish I had of considered this prior to booking as I would have allowed us more time! Ill be back!

Brisket!!. Went here with a group for a birthday on Saturday night. We had a set menu and all the dishes were full of flavour, well presented and good portion sizes. The brisket was amazing, so tender it almost fell apart when you touched it. The desserts (the cheesecake one and chocolate/salted caramel) were also a highlight. Great spot / Excellent Service / Food Extremely Good. Went here on a Friday night and was booked into the upstairs dining room with lounge area to the side. What a fabulous place for drinks/cocktails and dinner following. The female staff and hosts attending to us were extremely helpful and service was very quick for drinks and meals. Food was excellent (we had the big share plates of pork belly and lamb shoulder) and prices reasonable for what you receive. I am keen to revisit for some of the smaller share plates too. Overall a great experience and it is always a nice touch for the attendants to farewell you as you leave. Highly recommended.

Can't get the Brisket out of my head.... Went for dinner last night with the Husband and a friend for dinner. I'd heard so much about the KFD and was really excited the try this place (finally!).

What we Had: We ordered 5 share plates - the famous KFD, the Beef Brisket (with tortillas and chillli sauce), the Wagyu Tataki (with sake and sesame), the Scallop (with pumpkin and smoked Wagyu) and the Salmon (and scallop and lemon). We also ordered the pea, mint and fetta salad. For dessert we had the chocolate marquis and the mango cheesecake.

The Good: The food is delicious. Standouts were the Beef Brisket (amazing), the Wagyu Tataki (deliciously tender and great combination of flavours) and the Salmon. The cocktails here a pretty fantastic as well. Whilst the KFD was nice, I think this dish is overrated.

The Bad: The service is a little lacklustre. The wait staff seem very disinterested and we had to flag down a waitress a few times to order more drinks. We also felt a little rushed as we were asked if we wanted the bill immediately after dessert even though we were planning on staying a while longer and having some more drinks. We left early thinking perhaps they had booked our table for another party but there were quite a few empty tables around us and we couldn't see any people waiting for a table. Odd.

The desserts were also a little strange. Elements of both desserts were nice, but confusing. I don't think I will order dessert the next time I come back.

Getting there. What the menu lacks in coherence, it makes up for in individually beautifully constructed dishes, with the charry beef tataki and Texas beef brisket being highlights. Servings aren't huge so expect to order 1.5-2 dishes per person, which can result in a bit of a mash up of culinary influences at the table. The setting is fab, one of the best in Brisbane for dinner. We had no problems with the service or timing of food, which came out in tranches for our group of 4.

Loves it. Very nice ambience, cocktails were nice but its the food here that impresses. High attention to detail and to those who have previously reviewed the portions as being too small, a counter meal steak and chips is probably more your style, because I found the exact opposite. My wife and I ordered the pickled eggs, swordfish and crab, KFD, saltbush roast lamb, coconut curry and a side of beetroot salad. And struggled to finish it all. The food and technique here is second to none presentation is whimsical and fun with out being too serious, flavour profiles are perfectly balance and the coconut curry is one of the best dishes I have had, can't explain you just have to try it for yourself. We finished with the berry garden and the mango cheesecake two of the best deserts I have had in a long time.
This restaurant won't stay one hat for long, expect it to be up there with urbane and Ortiga and if they remain consistent maybe show esquire how it is really done

Loved this place... First of all I loved the setting, it was very intimate with dim lights and a spacious feel. We were served promptly and it didn't take long for us to get our meals and drinks. The Texas Brisket and the Wagyu dish were amazing, with meat so tender you could cut it with a spoon. I loved the presentation of all the dishes and would definitely recommend it to anyone!

Dont order too much though as the servings are larger than you would think... I am never one to complain about eating great food with good service and having a perve at the same time! Love Public!. Public has friendly staff, attentive service, simple and yet warm ambience, ah-mazing cocktails and most importantly, delicious food! I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think that some of Public's 'signature' dishes such as the KFD with potato and gravy, and the Mac and Cheese are a bit of a let down. Some of the dishes are a bit weird, like the apple risotto, which definitely wasn't to my liking. I highly recommend the texas brisket (which is VERY filling for two people - beware), the potato skins, the wagyu tataki, saltbush lamb and duck egg toast. Provided you order the right things, Public is definitely not a let-down - I'll definitely be going back for more!

I didn't like that I had to wait at the bar for my table even though I had a booking, and the restaurant wasn't full. Ploy to get you to buy more drinks? OK this time because I was with a group of people...but otherwise, it's just annoying. People have a booking for a reason, why make someone wait 30 minutes at the bar when their table is available at the time that they booked?

Stylish. I always thought the city to lack character but recently with the opening of Burnett Lane and this place - Public, I have definitely become a fan. The owners of Canvas (a great cocktail bar in Woolloongabba) have done an amazing job on Public - stylish decor, delicious meals, yummy cocktails and attentive staff. What more could you want. After going to Sprout recently and had the worst possible service there, I really appreciated the professionalism of the Public waiters and bar staff. We got the Lamb roast to share with the peas with mint and feta. The lamb was so soft and seasoned well and the peas were cold but was the perfect accompaniment. We also got the crunchy potatoes. Delicious. I want to go back to try the KFD and the slow roasted pork. Definitely give it a go!

Welcoming and delicious.. The problem with reading reviews before going to a restaurant is that you may get your heart set on a menu item that doesn't exist on the night you dine. Such was my luck (or lack of) with the duck egg french toast and the scallop, pear and popcorn small plate I'd read about. Sob.
Nevertheless, the beef tartare (with potato crisps!), KFD, and Lamb dishes were delightful - though it really was the Truffle Mac & Cheese that won the evening. And the smoky potato skins. And the banana dessert. And the cocktails... It was just a really great evening. Prompt and smiling service, well-spaced seating for the number of mid-week diners... I can't wait to go back.

Eat all the foods!. I love Public! After the first time I went there I've been finding any excuse to have dinner there. The trick is to bring enough people in your group so that you can order pretty much everything on the menu. The cocktails are delicious. Am I in New York???. We booked a table for 10 at Public on a Saturday night for my birthday. We got the long refectory table with a large candelabra which had elegantly dripped wax onto the table and was in contract to the other modern booths and tables.

The bar is stylish and the chairs ultra comfortable. We sampled MANY of the cocktails with my favourite hands down being the Public Nuisance.

Not feeling in a decision making mood after several cocktails we gave our waiter a budget and just said 'bring it'! We were not disappointed. Every dish was absolutely impeccably cooked and if we wanted a little more of something it was not problem and came out quickly.

The Kentucky Fried Duck was all everyone raves about as is the Brisket. There was a diving lamb dish (onto the second bottle of wine now so don't recall all the details!) and a dish with a tin of baked beans that were to die for. There was also an amazing pork belly dish that was fought over.

The wine list is decent and reasonably priced and the staff and friendly and readily on hand.

I'll be going back - for sure!!!

Such an open space I imagine its quite impossible to heat, so dress warm if you go in winter girls. We were seated in the thoroughfare area, even though they weren't full, but they happily moved us when we asked.

Food was pretty tasty, except for an underwhelming clafoutis, which wasn't bad just average. The service was well meaning but extremely inept. The food took ages then came in quick succession, contrary to the easy pace out waiter had suggested we could expect. Drinks ordered together came with 10 minute lag in between and our young waiter had no idea how to open a bottle of wine at table and broke the cork, it was like watching an accident in slow motion. Another waiter cleared our plates and asked what the dish was, just gauche really, a bit more training might be required before greenhorn waiters are let loose on their own sections.

Fun, noisy, not really a date restaurant but good for a small group. Those small plates add up though, our bill was $100 pp, which included 1 bottle wine & 1 pre-dinner drink.

Really Really Loves it. Went to public for a late night super date and was blown away from the moment i got there. Bonnie was just simply amazing. She was warm, friendly and obviously very proud of what her and her partner have created. The sharing plates are inventive, fresh, full of flavour and very well presented. So nice to see someone take a fresh approach and doing something different. The wine list was hard to choose from as there were so many good wines on there that i would have liked to try. Staff were very friendly and attentive, decor is very sharp and edgy, music was just right. I will be going back for sure, the cocktail list is calling out my name. Good on you guys, you have a new loyal customer in me.

Wow! This place impresses. You could easily think you're in a new New York nosh spot. The cocktails menu is inspired. Service is friendly, relaxed but attentive and the food...take an appetite. The portions are generous and the food - this place will be a rising star in Australias eating scene. This is one of the best but go see for yourself.

Great find for a business dinner. The hostess accommodated my request for a table where we could talk easily, our waiter was gracious and took our idiosyncrasies in his stride, not all dishes were amazing, but the standouts were the baby beets, the scallop, the KFD and wagyu, peas and fir the dessert, we tried all between us and the standout was the lemongrass brûlée. Wine was also delicious.

Doesn't get much better..... I dined with some friends last Thursday and had a truly wonderful time here; highlights for us included - KFD (cheeky!!!), Texas Brisket and Wasabi Lamb. All dishes not only looked awesome but they tasted so so good.
To complete the food, the drinks were of the highest quality and service was relaxed, proffesional and attentive. I can honestly say this has been one of my top places i've visited this year. I will be back very, very soon. My Sydney friends are now finally beginning to agree that Brisbane is a great dining destination.

Great Expectations. Went to Public last week looking for a decent feed before watching the football - or soccer if you must. First things I noticed was how well laid out the place was and how friendly the staff were. Special kudos go to the floor manager - for being so goddamn nice - and the bartender.

Dinner was Three entree sized plates; Duck egg french toast and truffles - minus the duck egg alas but the organic hens egg was a worthy substitute - Seared King Fish and Braised Brisket all very tasty and washed down with a glass of pinot chosen from their well stocked wine list. All of this and a cocktail at the end, set me back $75, which I felt was quite affordable and money well spent.

The 'Kentucky Fried Duck' caught my eye as well as it went passed me and to another customer. I was tempted to try but needed to find a pub that was showing the Asian Champions League.

Besides it gives me a reason to come back! Come to think of it I never had dessert either...hmm......

Drinks and dinner in the CBD. What an absolutely divine place! delightful feel, yummy cocktails and sensational food served in share plates. the Kentucky fried duck and Texas beef brisket were to die for. v well priced for the quality and lovely staff too.

Lunch today was incredible.The service here is warm and not intrusive and the dining room is spacious and light. We shared a host of share plates all were vibrant and full of love. I love wagyu so the skirt steak was my pick cooked to absolute perfection with a melt like butter feel. I love this place, can't wait to go back!

They don't only serve great food but make a mean cocktail and have a reasonable wine list at reasonable prices. We were a little hungry on the night so we decided to order the famous texus beef brisket,  prawn and chorizo , wagyu beef tataki, swordfish crab wiht a chilli prawn cracker and Salt n Vinegar fries. I would have also ordered the duck egg truffle toast but my other half wouldn't help me eat it.  Ah well there is always next time. First up was the prawn chorizo and pequillo dish. An amazing looking bowl of food signalled that the Hawaiian Potato Curry, Coconut and Lychee had arrived. There was an incredible array of colours and textures in the bowl, with really pretty yellows, pinks and whites. I am not a huge fan of curries usually, but this was very nice with lots of subtle and complex flavours working in harmony. The lychee was an interesting choice of flavours, it really stood out, but it did work well.

Being a student and all, it's hard to have fellow student friends who are willing to pay a premium for good food! Fortunately, I can always rely on a very few who love to join me on my foodie adventures, even when it might cost them an arm and a leg! But today was totally worth it, for the food was delicious, the service was non-pretentious, and the atmosphere was calm, perfect for a lunch date. I've been raving about Public to my fellow friends, trying to persuade them to come eat with me here, and today, it was finally the day! Reading reviews elsewhere, I was definitely looking forward to the KFD dish. Shock horror, the dish was no longer available! Clearly I had left my intention to visit Public far too long!  We were offered three types of water. Yep, three! Distilled, sparkling, or tap. My friend also opted for a lemon lime and bitters, which, according to her, was delicious! It's good to know that it wasn't the pre-made bottled stuff that you pay a premium for at the restaurant,

I had a really good time at Public. We often focus on the food offered at a restaurant and specific dishes. What I think is more important is the overall experience. Public has a semi-isolated location (it's more of a 'go there knowing it's there' restaurant than a 'walk past and walk in' restaurant') but the fitout is great.

Last year November Public relaunched with new owners, new GM and new menu (Peruvian fusion). The food itself was beautiful with lots of flavour. Every single dish we had was presented beautifully and tasted great. We tried the Peruvian style ceviche which was lovely, the scallops were perfect, the snapper and pork dishes were cooked to perfection. Public restaurant itself has such a relaxed vibe. Great place to just simply hang or even hold a function in one of their private rooms. Great place that has lovely food and drinks.

Very tasty eats tonight. Lamb rump was cooked perfectly and matched with the ancient grains very well. Pork was succulent and work well ad a whole. Finished off with a chocolate ganache that has a great strong flavour without being over the top. Nice atmosphere and great service. Solid Saturday night eats.

Enjoyed having a lunch at this place. Sophisticated menu, beautiful dish, it was amazing! Dish was too big for me. Regrettably I could not eat all. If you have a seat by the window side, you can enjoy George street view. (Actually I enjoyed looking to the busy street in the city as I’m from a country side) Must be a good atmosphere at night time!

What can I say about Public ahh ants? Ants on the menu, I HAD to try them.. They were served over delightful pieces of fish and cucumber which were sublime! The ants however, added nothing to the dish. They were pointless and a little sharp in the mouth giving that, 'did I just get an ant bite?' feeling. I scraped them off. Order the fish 100% just minus the ants. The other dishes were amazing, as was the service. Great place for date night.

Food and drink is on the expensive side but there a lot of plus sides to this establishment. Firstly, the decor is gorgeous. Secondly, the waitress was helpful, friendly and attentive. Finally, I ordered the kingfish, cucumber and ants dish (come on, trying ants is too hard to miss!) and it didn’t disappoint. Fresh ingredients and the fish was divine. I could taste little bursts of citrus (the ants?) and it perfectly complimented the fish. I also enjoyed my aperol spritz and was happy it came with an olive because.. well, I love olives! Recommend this place as a fancy treat.

Myself and my partner went to the Peruvian tapas night at Public and it was awesome! Especially loved the tuna wanton cones and the pisco sours were also great. Hopefully they will do it again at some point.
