Had my 40th Birthday there with a party of 6. The services there are absolutely superb and nothing bad can be added to it. The dishes are all very well presented and come out according to your needs. The portion seem a bit small if compared to other Asian restaurant on the Southside. However, it was surprisingly fulfilling and we are unable to finish all our orders. The food was a bit too salty for everyone of us but I am sure the kitchen would be able to adjust to that. The price was a bit dear, again if compare to the Southside. Overall we are pleased with the experiences but I won't recommend it for casual family dinner - unless you got deep pocket.
Came here for a birthday dinner. Food and service was great as to be expected with the pricing. Pictured was Banana spring roll š¤¤
4 out of 5 experience but only 3 out of 5 for food. Place is gorgeous, heritage building , very Melbourne. Staff and service fantastic. We did the big banquet and almost every dish was āalmostā great. Tuna tartare really tasty but ultimately, not a fresh tuna experience could have been anything. The strange flavour chicken salad not that strange, nice salad with sesame dressing I have made at home. Average prawn dumpling in amazing aged black vinegar with ginger. Murray cod excellent in Hinan style green onion coriander broth. Ditto the duck in plum and waygu. Deep fried ice cream gag. Had a really fun night but for the price? Not in any rush to go back
The atmosphere and architectural surroundings are amazing. The waiter and the somm were great especially the somm. However (I guess you knew there was a ābutā coming) the food was average Asian inspired fare. A standout for me was the Murray Cod in a Hainan style, which was delicate and subtle. The wagyu was drowning in Korean sauce which was unexpected because the sauce is usually a dipping sauce. The tuna tartare was good but too much chilli. I love chilli but often in a subtle seafood dish it can destroy the star of the show. The duck. An attempt to re-do Kylie Kwongās amazing dish but lacked the subtle spice components. Overall Donna Chang lacked a subtlety and a balance. Iād actually like to give a 3.5 because of the expectations delivered by the amazing surroundings and super efficient and numerous staff (great to see a restaurant with staff in sufficient numbers for good service and less stress) the food doesnāt live up to this fantastic foreplay which was ultimately disappointing.
What a delicious experience! Staff were very attentive and the second banquet option was amazing. Standout wad the scampi toast, the Wagyu steak, kingfish, and the char siu with picked cantaloupe! Would highly recommend a dinner experience here and could only imagine what a private room experience would be like!
I dined here on Saturday night for my friends birthday. Situated within a heritage- listed building, featuring the most beautiful decor and lush greenery, this place is unrivalled! The menu draws inspiration from Sichuan and Cantonese cuisine and we absolutely cannot fault the dishes. Pictured is the kingfish sashimi with black garlic, oysters with ginger pearls and spring onion and fried eggplant with chilli dressing. Our waiter even went to the effort of organising a birthday cake (not pictured) for our friend.
My experience at Donna Chang was fantastic. We went to the venue for my mother's birthday and she was floored. The interiors are sophisticated and reminiscent of high end restaurants in cities like New York; high ceilings, antique wood panelling, over the top chandeliers and swanky velvet upholstery. The place is photogenic. The food was excellent. As someone with dietary restrictions, dining at Chinese restaurants is not always the most accomodating due to the ingredients that their meals are predominantly based around, like pork and duck. It was absolutely wonderful to see a range of options that I could choose from that were also clearly identified on the menu. Even better, these options were delicious and full of flavour. To top it all off I mentioned to one of the staff on my way back from using the restroom that we were here to celebrate a birthday and was wondering if I would be able to order a dessert to come out as a surprise. Expecting to order off of the menu and pay for this, the waitress kindly let me know that there was a complimentary option that I could choose to opt for. My mother felt very special having this little dessert revealed on a gold plate with a lid concealing the goodies inside. I will dine at Donna Chang again and will be recommending it to many people.
We had some friends from interstate come and visit and after asking around, we heard Donna Chang was the new cool place to take them. We werenāt disappointed, the quality of the food was high, the tuna was exceptionally spicy, the wine selection and knowledge of the sommelier was impressive and the service couldnāt be faulted. We will definitely be back! Donna Chang is perfect for those interstate foodie friends, business development dinners or date night.
Great service, amazing ambience! Very impressive place for dinner, with a great bar downstairs. The food was lovely. We shared the crispy fried eggplant as a starter, followed by the roasted half duck with plum & octopus in tamarind. Would recommend all!
The Moreton bag bugs and the duck dish was really good. The prawn and scallop dumplings and the abalone was ok. The duck pancakes were not that great but the fried rice was quite nice. Iāll definitely be coming back to try out some more dishes
A very fancy restaurant, the interior design is absolutely gorgeous . The foods was VERY YUMMY and services was SUPERB. Definitely will come back again and try some other foods . THUMBS UP
Beautiful Chinese food in a colonial building ... light airy spacious and beautiful food. Murray cod was perfect and the black Angus black bean quite good. Have some dim sum type entrees and quench your thirst with Chinese beer
Better than a four Live farmed grouper await
This is a really good restaurant!
Firstly Donna Chang has an interesting wine list, which includes a great range of German reisling. We choose one of those, which matched the food perfectly.
Secondly the food is really tasty and well presented. The standouts, from what we ordered, were the sesame green tea noodles, the house made pickles and the egg noodles with Chinese cabbage.
Finally the restaurant itself is spectacular, in a beautifully preserved old government building.
Delicious Chinese food especially the pecking duck. The duck was juicy and tender. Authentic pecking duck and with good amount of serving. Donna chang has also one of the better cocktails. My partner had 3 cocktails as it flavourful and has a good mix of alcohol. The dim sum was yummy and steamed well. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant was elegant and yet simple.
What can I say...
5 stars. Bravo Beautiful.
Food drink decor company staff great thank you and we'll see you again soon. Go here for good food and special occasions or just a date if you want to impress.
Ask about Donna Chang and the history of the name.
Waiter was amazing and very knowledgeable. Food highly exceeded my expectation. Flavours were authentic instead of having a westernised twist.
Service was very quick - table for 9 during lunch time.
Very happy overall! Will definitely be back. Highly recommend!
Lovedddd the food at Donna Chang! Huge credit to our waitress Victoria - every single thing she recommended was brilliant. Her knowledge of the menu was key and just the general vibe from the moment we sat down was so welcoming. The cumin spiced lamb buns! my goodness šš¾ I would have been satisfied with just that and the perfectly made margaritas! But ofcourse we did order more and everything was delicious. Food came out fast, vibrant atmosphere and great restaurant for a fun date night and group dins! Canāt wait to be back and try more of the menu.š„
Excellent food and service. Will Definitely be back and recommend. They also have private function rooms do a special family dinner.
Advice from waiter and smellier a big bonus.
Duck pancakes, sashimi and bug & prawn dumplings - amazingly good.
Only minor issue is the seating as most tables have a chair one side and soft booth type seating on the other which is notably lower and not so supportive.
This restaurant offers a fusion East meets West experience with the bulk majority of the dishes being from Chinese cuisine.
We ordered the white chicken and lamb skewers to start off with, followed by the chow mein noodle with cabbage, roast duck, char siu pork neck and some drinks.
The white chicken was very succulent and flavoursome, cooked to perfection. The lamb on the other hand was a bit of a let down as it was quite salty and a little dry.
The chow mein with fungi was also a tad bit too salty for my liking although the portion sizes were generous. Roast duck was very nice. The skin of the duck was very crisp while the duck meat was tender and succulent. It was difficult to fault the duck. The cha siu pork neck was also a bit of a let down as pork neck is usually very soft and tender. The pork neck actually tasted like usual cha siu cooked in Chinese restaurants but it was a tad bit dry. The honey coating may have caused the outer layer of the cha siu to be slightly burnt when cooked.
There weren't many dessert options to choose from in the menu. I decided to
order their special or the night, which was an expresso soft serve. In my opinion, the flavour wasn't strong enough but the soft serve was was quite smooth.
Service was awesome. Staff were very friendly and polite.
Atmosphere was also great. The open kitchen plan allows for guests and patrons to look in to see how food was made.
The restaurant definitely pitches towards the high end Chinese fusion dining experience. Presentation was good and ingredients were fresh. My personal preference though is authentic Chinese food. The dishes are on the pricey side for Chinese food.
If you are into fushiok Asian food, give this restaurant a try.
Honestly speaking, itās average for a Chinese in terms of the flavour. The dim sum set is a bit pricey, but reasonable given the ingredients are fish/prawn meat other than pork. The fried rice is beyond the expectation as a side. Finally, nice gin and great service.
