Review Bean On Boundary - Brisbane

Brandon Lehmann (tidy)
I think we may have been forgotten about as there was a good 45 minute wait while the restaurant was half empty, but the food was delicious. A simple notification of the delay would have been appreciated.

Group booking with all meals getting a thumbs up on quality, composition and serving size. Variations on meals were catered for without fuss. French toast particularly special with side serving of real maple syrup a nice touch - add as you please and just before eating. Coffee nice with a small mix up with order compensated by a comp. Very attentive service. Would recommend a more efficient payment system to avoid delays.

Dropped in for coffee after shopping. The place is rather small and you may smell fumes from the busy fiveways, but that is the only thing I may complain. The service was friendly. The lady who took my order was very nice. Customers were so relaxed so as the atmosphere. I will go back to try some food next time as the menu looked interesting... Coffee was really nice too!

Chill place right in the middle of west end. House made prssed juices 😋

Popular west end cafe situated right in the middle of everything. This place has great coffee however the breakfast prices are a few more $$ than what you would normally pay. I ordered the bacon and eggs and my partner had the big breakfast. Both plates we're nicely stacked (30% of it was rocket though) and we're pretty tasty. Staff are also incredibly friendly :).

Very keen to please. As a soy drinker I'd recommend using a better soy milk. Bonsoy or Vitasoy rather than Coles brand.

We've been here before and had great service and food, however this time the service was comically bad, and the food ok, but not great. The coffee was cold and bitter. The waitstaff seemed bored and annoyed, and kept forgetting the orders of the tables around us. The potato rosti is delicious - highly recommend! Overall disappointing, especially given the great experience we had here a year ago.

Beautiful food and top service! We come here most weekends and the chefs always look after us. We have never had a bad meal and I highly recommend the handmade gnocchi and lasagna! Yum yum yum!

Came here for Sunday brunch. Surprisingly, there weren't that many people. I got the ricotta toast, which was just the right amount of sweet with the pomegranate adding a refreshing tangy taste to it. My friend got the cheesesteak cuban, which was also very good.

I also greatly appreciated that their chai lattes were made with actual tea leaves instead of sickly sweet powder. They had a dusting of some spices on top that made it even better.

Came here on a Saturday morning and the place was packed. We had to sit at the bar cos there weren't enough tables. They were kind enough to let me swap the bacon to smoked salmon for the fritters dish. My friend ordered a haloumi bruschetta and a cappuccino. The food and service was pretty good. I had a great experience here.

Great food, great coffee, great service. Thanks for a delicious breakfast. Best meal we had in Brissy this weekend. Haloumi Bruschetta a winner.

Lively little cafe in the heart of west-end. Great service by helpful staff. Coffee is superior and my toastee was fantastic, full of flavour and very fresh. Good menu at good prices. My second time here and did not disappoint then either.
Canuck In Oz
Zucca gnocchi with garlic parmesan toast. The service was fast and friendly. The prep time in the kitchen appeared to be slowed by takeaway orders. It was worth the wait for the food. The gnocchi was tasty and the pumpkin sauce wonderful.

This is hands down my favourite place to eat in West End, the service is always exceptional and the food is of the highest standard- not to mention the coffee!!! To die for, weekends aren't the same without a visit !!!

Just home after having dined here. Probably the worst Italian food I have ever eaten. Salt & Pepper Calamari was just fair. Served Luke warm and was slightly stewed. Aioli was reasonable but too heavy. Main corse of Veal Scalopini bore no resemblance to menu description. It was sloppy with very little meat and an overwhelming mushroom sauce which at best could just be called " mush".
Service only just reached an acceptable level. Not going here ever again. Most disappointing.
Today I was at west and while my partner was checking some store I decided to spend the time having a coffee.

I ordered a dirty chai latte and the mushroom affair.

It was my first time drinking a dirty chai latte but I can say that if they all taste like this one I got myself a new favorite drink. It was creamy, had a nice foam on top and the flavour of the espresso mixed with the spices from the chai made me fall in love with it. Would rate it a 5 out of 5.

The mushroom affair was quite interesting, the mushrooms were well seasoned and the fatness from the avo with the haloumi and some fresh lemon squeezed on top made this dish shine. On the other hand the bread was a bit dry, at least drier than the ones I have been served lately, and the pesto didn't give me the freshness I was expecting from it, I'm not sure if they make it themselves but it tasted like it came from a jar. This dish gets a rate of 3.5 out of 5.

Overall I had a nice coffee and my dish was enjoyable so I would be happy to come back and try some more things from their menu.

Polite and quick service. Good location (in the sun during winter - might be too hot in summer though!). Menu is varied and covers all corners (vegan, dairy free etc). Had a delicious bruschetta and bf had eggs benedict. Smoothies are on the menu, as are freshly squeezed juices. Would definitely come here again. Popular place for coffee as well however didn't have any.

Why cook at home when you can enjoy great service and excellent Italian dinners for $15? Good coffee, great deserts and well priced beverages. It's places like this that encourage people to head out on school nights.

Best pancakes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lovely brunch in Brisbane today. Was visiting with family and had a yummy meal with great service. Very attentive staff and and well priced. Lots of vegetarian options also. Would definitely recommend.

My first time dining in West End, and I wasn't disappointed! The homemade linguine was delicious and fresh, I had the special of the night, puttanesca, and it was delicious. Massive portion, I couldn't finish it. We had the garlic bread as an entree but it was a bit disappointing, slightly overdone and not moist enough. Dirty chai latte was delicious. Our waitress was cheery, happy, and very helpful.

I could rate this restaurant higher. The service was absolutely amazing. The item we wanted to order wasn't available so they Cooked us something that wasn't even on the menu. The waiter wasn't only hilarious he was very attentive and the food was to die for. Must recommend.

Imma start off by saying this is my favourite Italian place in Brisbane because its pretty cheap, has huge portions and I like people watching in West End. I definitely prefer this place for dinners but their breakfast dishes are pretty huge too. It's easy to get to being on the Boundary St intersection opposite the Commonwealth Bank. Park at the Coles and run!
Jenny
Very friendly staff. We arrived close to the end of lunch service. But they still take our order. Watermelon salad is a dream in a hot noon, refreshing. The meatball panini is nothing special. Wish I could try their pancakes but didn't see it in the menu. Maybe it is only available on weekends brunch?
Bayside97
We were really disappointed with our brunch experience. The waitress who took our order acted like she resented us being there, and didn't check up on our meals. I paid over $20 for the vegetarian breakfast which was absolutely tiny - you get a lot of things but the serving sizes are so small it still ends up a disappointing meal. To make things worse, it was missing avocado and my request to not have butter on my toast was ignored. The beans tasted like canned kidney beans with ketchup. My friend's corn fritters were mush, as if they had made dough and then not cooked it at all.
The decor is pretty dull and there's not much of an atmosphere.
On a positive note, they do fresh juices which are amazing.
Definitely won't be back, especially with those prices!

Excellent coffee. Italiano feels. Great service. Just a little small on portion. Enjoy a great 'establishment' in Brisbane's hip West End. 👌🏽

Had a lovely Friday evening here. Food was absolutely delicious. Staff were all very lovely. Great use of the space in the small restaurant. Great ambience. Couldn't rate it higher!
Yorkie_Traveller
We dined here with some friends on a recent Friday evening. We had reserved a table inside, which we preferred to the ones outside. Service was good, friendly and attentive throughout the meal though not intrusive. We had the crocchettes and garlic bread for entrees; the crocchettes were excellent, really tasty, the garlic bread was a little average and wouldn’t have that again. For mains we had lasagne and the gnocchi. The lasagne was excellent, really tasty and a good size portion. The gnocchi was also good. You can BYO and cocrkage isn’t too expensive.

Would return here again for a nice meal in West End.

Great food and presentation. The place was nice and cozy with a lovely setting and amazing light...great for photos! Staff were lovely and checked up on us frequently.

Was very glad to have stumbled across this sidewalk cafe. Saturday breakfast for six and all of our group had a different dish. The benny was excellent and mushrooms cooked beautifully. The pancakes also went down very nicely. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Add to that a rich smooth coffee blend and this is a nice addition to your West End hangout list.

I went with my friends over the New Years weekend. We were originally going to go to nearby cafes but decided to give The Establishment a go.

The ambiance was nice and the staff was attentive. The menu was quite good. The best thing was probably the best portion. The serving was very generous and I swear my friend's scrambled eggs had more than 3 eggs in it! Poached eggs were also done perfectly. Either way,the serving was generous and the service was great. The only down side was the coffee wasn't that great. Definitely can do better on the coffee.

I'd definitely go back again one day.

Love this place, i usually go there for breakfast on saturdays. Good service, good atmosphere . The tiramisu is delicious. A really good experience.
Sonny Reid
Good food, attentive and fast service
The price was affordable
Portions could be a little bit better but overall a great little place to go eat at West End.
Bunny
Had heard the Establishment was good place so decided to have a breakfast with some friends on a Friday.
Arrived and the service was very friendly and food and drinks came out fast which was really impressive since there was 14 of us.
Food was alright. I had the sweet French toast which was very nice and I tasted the scrambled eggs chorizo and salmon scrambled eggs and that was also pretty good. However I was told the pancakes were a bit of a let down and they put a lot of vanilla syrup in my iced coffee so it was rather sweet.
Overall it was a good experience coming here. I would probably come back here in the future since the venue is very nice and it has a variety of breakfast and lunch items to try.
JD
Sensational and substantial breakfasts and coffee on offer here - just don't expect to get a table easily on weekends and unfortunately they don't take bookings after 6.30am..! Dinner is good but not their strongest point.
Misscharlot
Friendly staff helped us to arrange seat for a baby and a group of 4 =) love the hospitality. great coffee and the dishes was huge, i ordered the Savoury French toast which amazed me.
Teomelvin39
Food: The ingredients were separated on its own.
As for my friend's dish, the scrambled eggs were on top of a bread which as you knew it, it becomes a soggy bread

Drinks: coffee was great.

Service: couldn't ask for more. Attentive service!

Massive breakfast for a really good price - location, style and menu reminds me of being back in Europe. Great start to the weekends here...

A group of 5 of us ate here on Friday 12th June 2015 quite by accident and what a pleasant surprise to find such a lovely little restaurant with excellent service from our lovely waitress. The food was divine, beautifully presented and no long wait. Prices were very reasonable and yes the guitarist just made for a lovely ambience. Best meal I've had out in many years and can't wait for the chance to go down to Brisbane again to have such wonderful service. We need to send some of the staff from the restaurants in and around Mission Beach to take a leaf out of their book. My main was the slow cooked beef with cauliflower cream and pear done in a red wine jus. Simply stunning. Thankyou

Saturday Morning Breakfast. Warm and welcoming, willingness to help and overall good feeling. Staff are friendly but not overly so or in your face, the service was timely and he food was delicious. 4 mains, juices and coffees - price was reasonable and worth the experience - will certainly go again and recommend to others.

Delicious Italian!! Very authentic. The saltimbocca chicken and the veal scallopini were amazing. The service was excellent and there was a great selection of wines. Good size meal for a decent price - a new local favourite! Oh and the Tiramasu is 10/10

Good Italian Food. The Establishment (restaurant on the Cnr of Boundary Street and Mollison St West End) is gaining a reputation for the place to go for breakfast with their home made hash browns, beans and tasty sauces. They also have their own brand of coffee .

We are finding it to be a regular eating spot of ours on a Saturday night . You can dine outside or inside (which has an Italian theme).
The servings are very adequate, well priced and there is something for the whole family – all good Italian dishes.

I decided to try the “specials” last Saturday night which were Prawns fried with Quinoa flakes and a Seafood combo on couscous finished off with the home made tiramisu (shared)

The Staff are always friendly and welcoming.
I would recommend trying The Establishment West End to anyone.

Dining before Hifi-ing. Great food and the 2 waitresses were so friendly and helpful. Fully recommend the Establishment. We had 3 starters and drinks before checking out a gig at the Hifi.

Fruit toast. I ordered the fruit toast. How hard is that to stuff up? Put bread in toaster, put on plate when brown.
The waitress comes out tells me the fruit toast is off the menu this morning. I'll have some ....banana bread.
Less than 30 seconds later the waitress presents me with fruit toast. " we had some after all " says the waitress.
I put the honey on and notice the toast is near cold. As if they found some left over fruit toast, put it in the micro wave and whacked it on a plate.
I tell the waitress this toast is near cold.
She feels it and agrees.
Look I'll just have the banana bread. Two minutes later she comes back with my reheated fruit toast that she has felt and I have rejected, reheated re toasted. How do I know it's not a new one? Because it has a bite out of it where I tried it.
I say to the waitress I don't want this.
She takes it away.
When I'm billed, I get a free coffee and am charged for the fruit toast plus a service fee of $1.

My rule is if a cafe can't do toast they shouldn't be in the game.

The real italia. After eating traditional homemade Italian all my life, I find a select few in melbourne(my home) with the best in lygon st...but this little corner place is as good as it gets!
Service A1.
Food A1
CoffeeA1
Go!

Little gem!!. Everything was incredible and fresh . Took me right back to Italy! True Italian food. buffalo mozzarella and prociutto special entree was perfect, pesto and chorizo gnocchi melted in my mouth and the chocolate cannoli was incredible! Must visit if you haven't been and I'll definitely be returning.

Amazing friendly staff, great vibe & food. I have been here on many occasions for breakfast and now twice since they've opened for dinner. I have to say I cannot fault this place! The french toast is impressive, coffee is really good and you must try the gnocchi if you go there for dinner. The service is fantastic, staff are attentive and polite. The place has a good vibe, you must try it out!
Bx94
Unfriendly staff. The manager here is up herself and thinks of herself as being better than others - this is not the correct attitude a manager should have. The waitress and waiters were frantic and rude, they paided no attention to the customers and even told a polite waitress who was making conversation with me
to stop. I did'my appreciate the attitude of this cafe at all.
Tish
Extremely disappointing food. Had a cool vibe, and the guitarist on the vesper at the door was what really sucked us in. Started with the crumbed fetta stuffed olives, which were alright, but everything went downhill from there. The wine (chianti) was quite ordinary. Things got worse as our mains came out - marinara linguini and mushroom risotto. The linguini was the fresh pasta of the day, and it was really very overcooked, almost mushy. The waitress asked how were our meals, we said ok, and she looked questioningly at us so we had to elaborate that the pasta was really very overcooked. At first she misunderstood that we were saying it was underdone and she tried to explain the chef is Italian and he cooks his pasta "al dente", and we had to explain no it's really OVERcooked. The attitude of the waitresses (who were really nice at the beginning) dramatically changed after we gave this feedback. There was hardly any seafood in the marina, all the tiny bits of prawn wouldn't have even made up one whole prawn. The chef came out and apologised and really tried hard to get us to try his tiramisu. We reluctantly agreed. And regretted it. A final let down for the night. Really wanted to like this place, but not if an Italian chef can't do their pasta anywhere remotely near the realms of "al dente"... =(

Love it!. We arrived quite late on Sunday night and the kitchen officially just closed. The waitress asked the chef if we could have dinner anyway and he agreed. That starts with very good service. Loved it that we got chilled glasses and cold water. The entrees we had meatballs and croquettes. Both were good but not excellent. As mains we shared a gnocchi dish, a seafood pasta dish, a puttanesca and a risotto. All were very good! We also had some tiramisu and coffee, which were very good as well! Especially for us, because we were late, they had the guy who played music before, play a bit more after he finished his dinner. Waitresses were very nice and good. Love this place!!

My new favourite place to eat! A little piece of Italy. Fantastic service.. The Establishment in West End is sure to give adjacent restaurants and cafĂŠs a run for their money. I first started coming to Establishment for their fantastic Breakfasts which are served up till the early afternoon - great for those who have had a big night and an even bigger sleep-in ;) The Establishment have just started dinner on Fri, Sat and Sun nights much to our delight so my partner and I headed in to see if the dinner was as good as their breakfast. We arrived to find a gentleman playing beautiful Italian music on his guitar sitting on a Vespa. I felt like I was in Italy - such a great touch! Really created a beautiful atmosphere. I ordered the pumpkin gnocchi and it was sensational - true home style gnocchi made with love. My partner had the calamari and it was spot-on - not too oily, not too dry, not chewy and melted in our mouth. The staff are fantastic and the food is fresh, simple and made with love. We come for the food and we stay for the staff who look like they want to be at work and make us feel so at home - so refreshing! Looking forward to trying the meatball dish next time.

What a great night! Melt in your mouth gnocchi!. I had the most devine gnocchi for dinner last night with pumpkin, sundried tomatoes and pine nuts. It was melt in your mouth gnocchi!

The atmosphere was great with a guitar player sitting on the vespa out the front. Great way to spend a Friday night to wind down after the week. The music was great entertainment for the kids.

Meals were great and we didn't have to wait long despite a busy restaurant. The staff were very friendly and accomodating with our kids.

Will be back!
Shaun
Best pasta I've ever had, exceptional friendly and professional service, great atmosphere.
Yolande1986
Amazing food! Real Italian!. I have never had a meal from entree to desert that was made as perfect as this evening at The Establishment. From the bruschetta to the vegetarian lasagne to my tiramisu ( which is homemade and to die for) my dinner was delightful. The staff were lovely, welcoming and warm hearted and my partner and I will definitely be coming back. The food is extremely cheap for the quality of the meals. Devine Devine Devine.

Coffee but skip the burger. Staff are friendly.and attentive ,Ice in tap water is good. coffee good.
sadly the vegeburger seemed to be treated like a schnitzel and deep fried and the accompanying small amount of salad did not seem fresh;it all lacked flavour so despite the accompanying fries I was disappointed. the tables outside are good for people watching but also expose you to a lot of traffic fumes and noise.
Toni Soderstrom
Fabulous breakfast, excellent coffee, excellent service, unique!!!
Thepiedpiper82
Fabulous Staff. My boyfriend and I are regulars at The Establishment and the lovely waitress remembers our coffee orders every time! That kind of service is few and far between. great coffee, great food, fantastic staff.
Rose.norton21
A fantastic experience. The Establishment has been amazing each time we go. We have been there for breakfast and lunch several times and each time the food has been amazing, and the service has been impeccable. The place has good vibes and is right in the heart of West End. Fantastic food, great staff - would definitely recommend

Beautiful atmosphere. We been at the establishment last Friday lunch we had the lunch specials and it was just beautiful full of flavor and really Italian style cooked, the staff really friendly, its the perfect spot for a nice meal in the heart of west end will back soon!! thank you guys

The food was pretty tasty, the service was pretty helpful. The gluten free options were not bad. Would recommend.

Lovely wait staff, tasty food and a perfect location. The mushrooms are particularly amazing.

Not the best place West End has to offer. Living near by West End, I was definitely interested in checking out the place I saw being constructed inside out for many weeks. I have only visited once, so my comments are only from one experience.

The girl who served us was not your typical friendly West Ender. As a new cafe in a good end of town, I would of thought customer service would be one of your greatest draw cards in making people return and building a relationship with the local customers. This was not the case. We were there for brunch. The Eggs benny sauce I had tasted store bought, the eggs weren't cooked properly and everything else on the plate was cold (stale bread from it being hot and going cold). My friend had the sourdough with smashed avocado. One slice of bread, piled high with mashed up avocado for $$. A place cant simple rely on being successful from having their business in a thriving area of town, they need to work on becoming part of the community with friendly service and simple but delish food.

I will be going back soon to see if my opinion will change as like I said, I have only tried it once so they could of just been having a bad day. I will give them another go, hopefully it wont be my last.
Brisbane Delights
Really nice. I have been here a good few times now for breakfast. I will say there is a little wait time. But it doesn't bother me. The coffee is really good. The breakfast dishes are reasonably priced and very tasty. The tomato could be fried a little longer as each time i get it, its always a little hard. Staff are very friendly.
Overall we will keep going back.
Ms Foodie
One slice of sourdough with some avocado and fetta...$14.90 really? I don't think so.
When I remarked to the waitress, I would have expected 2 for that price. I received a sarcastic infused: "thanks for the feedback." I'm still hungry:(
Letishia Ryan
Was so bad I didn't even eat my meal!! And I never do that! The calamari was tough and lacked any flavour and the salad had no oomph or anything remotely interesting. The homemade tartare was boring and tasted like crappy mayo. I also had an acai smoothie that I didn't finish as it was so flat and weird tasting.
Subaruhamo
Great place for lunch!!!. We had lunch here and had Vegetable Stack that had fulsome favours as well as the salad that was so fresh and crisp! So difficult to select from the delicious homemade deserts and the Coffee was just great.

This is a really good place to go. Am looking forwarding coming again for dinner, lunch and breakfast!
Deejaysecolare
A new West End gem. A fantastic relaxed style, fresh and home made food, everything we had was amazing.

Together with my wife, we are staying in the West End for 6 weeks, from Noosa.
We used the Establishment on many occasions for coffee and had lunch there yesterday with out son,
The service has been first class and all three of us enjoyed the food prepared for our lunch.
Very happy to again visit The Establishment before we return home.

Went for breakfast this morning (Sunday) we waited 10 minutes to be seated, which was fine..they we're busy. When we were seated the waitress told us the only thing they didn't have was the acai berry super bowl ( as we had waited 10 minutes to be seated, we had looked at the menu and I had chosen that very dish!) I guess my face said it all and then the waitress said oh well we do actually have it but it's just a pain in the ass to make but if that's what you want I'll make it for you??!!!!! She then left and another waitress took our order, I asked for the super bowl...I was then told they were out of it! Obviously lies...just too much trouble to prepare. Here's some advise....don't put something on the menu if it's too difficult to get out to your customers even if it is busy!!! I ended up ordering the oatmeal My partner ordered the nonnas eggs. After getting our coffee and chai latte (no complaints) my partner asked for a croissant while we waited. This came out sans butter or jam and was clearly not fresh. 40 minutes after we ordered our breakfast arrived, my oatmeal was bland, uninspired with a side of soy milk with bits floating on top. My partners eggs arrived, without the side of bacon he ordered, the baked eggs were under cooked so had to be sent back. The eggs were put back under the grill..causing them to turn rubbery. They were returned to the table, still no bacon. I would never return to this "restaurant" service-appalling, food appalling. Save your money

Being in west end majority of the time, when this new place opened I was very interested in checking it out.

Being new I can understand that they need to learn a few things. But the service it's self was incredibly poor.

Sat down and waited for menus for around 10 minutes. The first person to come to our tables didn't come with menus. Asked us for drink orders, we asked for menus and water. Received our coffee, how ever the person who brought the coffee out didn't take our order... Waited about 10 mins for a person to come back. Placed our order, asked for water again. Received our food, unfortunately it had pepper all over it, personally I think pepper should be added to someones food after asking them if they want it, not just assumed.

Again asked for water (pretty sure by law you are required to put water on a table as soon as someone sits at it)

Finally got the water, how ever my glass had a chip in it and I cut my lip which just topped everything off.

After receiving my food order again, without a mountain of pepper on it, I must say that was probably the highlight of the breakfast.

I may come back after they have been in business for a few months, hopefully they will have learnt something about service.
