Review Story Bridge Cafe - Brisbane

Em & Eden
Came in for a quick coffee whilst in the area. Big cafe, with heaps of cabinet food on display. Was disappointed with the service as I found the staff to be quite rude. We had a small bag of food from a nearby bakery (unopened) however the staff member serving us told us quite harshly we can’t eat it in the cafe. We completely understood, but thought it wasn’t addressed the best way. Coffee was pretty good, as merlo usually is. If in the area would just get one to takeaway!

Even the dogs get free water! Asked for water with brekkie but told could not because of covid and would have to purchase water from fridge. Coffee good (+4 stars). Eggs had shell in them. (-5 stars) Service - could not understand the waiter (-1 star) Dog water (+ 3 stars) Overall +1 star Would recommend. For coffee (or free dog water) Brekkie not so much.

A lovely deli with a great selection of food for young and old. Serving Merlo coffee and with a range of milkshakes and frappes to keep everyone happy. Plenty of options in the cabinets and a nice menu.

Well the staff seem nice friendly. I ordered a cappuccino which was really burnt then when my streak sandwich came out it looked average in appearance but i thought all good i took one bite into the steak it was but chewy i opened the sandwich to see in side and the steak was so raw like it was mooing. I hope dont get sick now from trying to eat it. From the price of the meal sadly it was not worth a look. To be honest i would really like my money back not happy with the food. Its a shame thought id try somewhere new for lunch.

Food was very good and not a long wait for it! Coffee tasted burnt ☹ And no table service ☹ Or would have have been 4+stars

We LOVED this place. The serving sizes were very generous and the food tasted divine. It was a little more expensive than we usually spend for breakfast but we definitely got our moneys worth. Best coffee sold here too. Wish we lived in Brisbane because we would go here all the time!

Third time I’ve been to this cafe and the staff isn’t friendly.. they don’t look happy and unfortunately it is reflected in the food. I’ve been back there because I was in a group and someone choose that cafe, but next time I’ll make sure to go somewhere else. Also if you want to drink water you need to buy, no free tap water.. but that wouldn’t be a problem if everything else was good.

I stopped by while out for a bike ride and had a coffee, it was very good. Even got a free cookie, I love a free cookie! They have a wide range of delicious looking food freshly made and the cheapest eggs in Brisbane 800g free range for $6. Very friendly staff and excellent customer service. Stop by and support the locals.

Story Bridge Deli is my favourite place in all of Brisbane for breakfast, lunch and most importantly, coffee. The staff are wonderful and nothing is too much trouble, even for those difficult customers!!!

I purchased a group buying voucher for the Story Bridge Cafe last year which I thought would be perfect to use when taking my wife out for lunch on our anniversary. So very regretful I did. Instead of ending up with a half price meal we ended up paying 1.5 times menu price. It was about 1:30 to 2 pm when we arrived so the cafe was quite empty with plenty of tables. We went up to the counter to tell them we had a voucher and ask for a menu. In the meantime a friendly staff member came to us and showed us to a table. We ordered quite expensive menu items (after all, we had a voucher). The food wasn't brilliant and we were both less than impressed. However this would have been ok. It was somewhere new and we were taking a risk. But then I went to the counter to pay..... I gave the lady behind the counter my voucher but she advised that it couldn't be accepted since a booking was required to use it. Fair enough, I didn't read the T&C's close enough and missed this. However I think it was ridiculous to enforce this when it was obviously a very quiet time of day with plenty of spare tables. So we had to pay full menu price for all our food and drinks. What made it worse, we still had the vouchers which we have never used and never will use. After giving us an anniversary of bad memories we will not be returning and have simply wasted the money spent on the vouchers. The only positive on the day was the waitress that served us. The food was pretty poor and the manager on duty was very rude and unaccommodating. We will not be returning and have warned others against giving it a go.

Best cafe & deli around.....

I have walked passed this little deli/cafe and never thought it was anything special to go inside, oh how wrong I was!
Freshly prepared salads, cakes, slices, prepared meals to take home. God I want to move to Kangaroo Point just to go and buy the lasagne, quiche and all the other meal ideas. Plus a menu of more goodies.
We came mid week for lunch and it was just a constant stream of people getting healthy lunch options. We decided to share a curried lamb filo with 2 different salads. So cheap and so yummy! One place you can have a meal without chips on the side.
Revisited this café early this morning, which was the best time otherwise it would packed of diners later on the day. First visual inspection found that the café' vibe is as good as before. Peoples are very relaxed in enjoying their brekkies. I ordered my flat white and designed my own brekkie form the sides, which I selected the bacon, chipolata & salmon. A friendly staff brought my coffee to the table very quick. Looked at the flat white with nice looking white Merlo coffee cup, my visual and olfactory senses told me that this ought to be a nice one. Indeed, it proved to be true that this flat white was even better than the one that I had at the original Merlo café in Fortitude Valley a couple of weeks ago. After that, my own designed brekkie came the next, which was full of protein :). A big tick was given for the portions and an additional tick for the taste. Well, this café really makes my day.

Aug 02, 2015 Rating 3.5/5

I always have the impression that this cafe must be very small because I see so many peoples sitting at the alfresco dining area for breakfast. It was definitely a surprise when I walked in and realized how large it is. Ordered the fruit loaf with my flat white, its own blend of Merlo coffee definitely earned a big tick. Service was efficient and friendly. I prefer to have breakfast here more than Tuppy's across the road.

TL;DR: Sometimes for the best kind of eating, it pays to give the local delicatessen a visit once in a while. That is what happened here, and it really personifies many overlooked aspects about what makes eating out memorable. Good quality food, the right sort of ambiance, and a genuine all-round satisfying indication of customer service. All of it was present here, and it is this kind of experience that is not going anywhere anytime soon.

While lots of cars are whizzing up ahead, on one of the most perpetually busy stretches of road anywhere in Brisbane, down below it is something of an amalgam of any suburban street full of apartments and downtown minus the grunge. Within this area is a rare kind of eatery within the central area of town, some that are undoubtedly timeless and not following trends, somehow sticking on as popular places to go once the trendiness has gone. Hiding within the foundations of the big bridge is the old-style delicatessen, one that can always be given more love, and be relied upon. That is the beauty of it right here.

It was one weekend like any other, going out for breakfast during the Sunday morning. For the most part, the plan of attack took the gist of what often happens - groceries, which is first preceded by getting some coffee to drink. Usually, it is in and around the local area, but a slight change of pace was underway this time around. He had been doing quite the bit of work around Kangaroo Point, and that is one place that is ripe for places to eat (which I have somehow managed to pass by until recently for some strange reason). He had known a few of them, in particular that has a great view over the cityscape.

There was that one place in mind, but also on the selection platter were a few places near the Story Bridge. Finding one of the streets that is either directly under it, or at least adjacent to the lower part of Kangaroo Point, what happened was getting a convenient park then walking around to see what looked good. I can't remember if there was more that was possibly on the list, since the stop-over had one place examined before moving onto the next place - and that place was right here.

Sometimes to decide on a place, all that needs to be done is to walk right in and have a gauge if the vibe is right or not. That was definitely the case here, and what a good call it was. Walking right in, the amount of space inside was much bigger than it seemed from the outlook. Like with many delicatessens out there, it is a combination of several food services done at a specialty price. Without much of a theme, the general gist of it is getting a bit of everything for reliable eating. Some smallgoods and fresh produce are there for a decent price to purchase, the counter is big, and houses all kinds of delectable items. Both inside and outside - the front and the back - they also have a number of tables to sit at, with plenty of space to move around. It is relaxed, and has its own character is terms of ergonomics and aesthetics.

Service is pretty much what has come to be expected around this part of the world. Adding to the vibe, they are definitely friendly and welcoming folk, whom do show some elements of working hard, and . That being said, the sequence in which the orders came out was a bit strange and lop-sided, with one meal arriving before both coffees were here; the hospitality isn't something that is lacking in any way, however getting the timing right might need a bit of tweaking here and there, and if they manage to get that underway it would undoubtedly be one of the prime locations anywhere in Brisbane. To play devil's advocate here, the vibe does invite people to stay and peruse the newspapers laying around so it is not so noticeable if they take their time, and if the order is to go it is quick as lightning. This is one sort of effort that is more relaxed, and kind of follows the basics. It is not one to be avoided, but it won't necessary be used for any pointers in customer service.

With all kinds of trendiness going around the place, and many other places just seeming to float by giving out the standard fare, a place such as this is a welcome find once in a while. To give it the best description in brevity, the food that they serve is basically home-style and traditional. They use trusted recipes, along with what they have got, to create meals which have an earnestness behind their craft. They serve breakfast and lunch, along with several cakes and drinks for a snack.

Getting to the breakfasts, something exists here for everyone that comes through. The first page has the vibe of either being simple, or getting the sweet options out in the open early. All of it starts with a basic breakfast component, and as it was already said they put what they have into it, thus exuding the impression that they have their own twist on it. After that are the bigger breakfasts, complete with the big options, the Benedict, and basically anything else that most people would want when heading out to eat breakfast. Every time, the components are given due attention regardless.

Lunch is not as exciting a fare, essentially recycling a number of breakfast options alongside some burgers, salads, and a few other basic snacks. Inside the cabinet might be the place to peruse for something a bit different, or there is all the wholesale fare that is around the perimeter. Then it comes to drinks, they have the general range of tea and coffee to start off with, then all sorts of sodas with the usual choices as well as house specialties, plus a big list of smoothies, juices, shakes et al. Essentially everyone is accounted for here, and it is all in the vein of being wholesome and home-style.

From my dining buddy's plate, I got a bit of his bubble and squeak. The mixture of potato, pumpkin, and corn was a solid base which also had mix-ins of cheese, bacon, and spinach to plump it up. With the addition of chipotle sauce, this was a smoky and substantial number. The small section I had confirmed that this place was going to be pretty good in the end.

Flipping and flopping between a couple of options, the magnitude won over in the end with the Ultimate Breakfast taking my fancy. More or less, this is the necessary big breakfast on their menu, containing a bit of everything major from the sides menu. This made for one huge, substantial sucker for breakfast, and it was the right call through and through. On the plate was some thick cuts of bacon, chorizo, sauteed mushrooms, oven roasted tomatoes, house-made potato cake, poached eggs - and the yolk being soft as always - all with some toasted Turkish bread. Each component of the dish was massive, and had a keen eye of quality considered. The sausage was thick and smoky, with a good lot of meat packed in, the bacon was thick and crispy, the eggs both were so plump, and the egg yolk thick and rich. The mushrooms were plentiful, just being cooked to the point of both releasing flavour and maintaining texture, and who could forget the potato cake? This was a winning combination of having a creamy texture in conjunction to the soft, fluffy finish of the potatoes, and a crispy finish outside. It is times like this when big breakfasts are hard to beat.

Then comes the coffee. Again, we meet our "friend" Merlo. Whatever could be good or bad, this is the one that relies upon the talent of the barista at the machine. That being said, they got to be on their game to make a great cup, because some can be ordinary if otherwise. This time around though, there was a competent barista at the helm and it even was pretty strong - a bizarre occurrence even when the coffee is good from Merlo. As per usual, it was the doppio. This was nicely extracted,

While perusing the menu, among the drinks section, one item stuck out to me for how strange it sounded. Being a milkshake fan - albeit not to the extent about ten or so years ago - it kicks into drive when there is a flavour that is somewhat unorthodox, or rarer to find. From memory, it might have been read somewhere about shakes that have flavours of soda in them. That being said, among the usual suspects on the menu there was also "creaming soda" as an option. During the meal, I pondered whether or not to try it out - and this would not be being written if the answer were no.

It was a last order, that was all made to go. And it was quite nice. The flavour was a little close to strawberry, and from what I could tell with seeing it prepared is they possible used the soda syrup with the milk instead of fizzy water. Also on that, it had the right amount of thickness, a cold, creamy texture with the milk and ice cream, making it one worth sweet finish to a generously-sized meal.

So overall, with the Story Bridge Delicatessen, there is no secrets here that is out and out down-home fare. They prepare it all in house, with fresh ingredients, the dishes are wholesome and use a general recipe with wriggle room to try new things out, and it is more delicious as a result. The price is also right, as is the value for money, and it all becomes more apparent with the setting. Whether it is to go, or to stay in for the meal, the staff here make you feel welcome, and it could not possibly be in a better position to make use of every draw card a place could have.

I've been here a few times with friends and we really like it, it's in a good little location easy to get parking with a great selection of food and coffee - the portion sizes are really generous also.

Absolute mint meals!
Came on a trip to Brisbane and had breakfast here recently and was not disappointed. Great value for money as the food is a generous serving. The food came quickly and was delicious. Chilled vibes in the store and super friendly and efficient staff. Will be back!

I have been to story bridge deli cafe for coffee before and always thought the coffee is tasty. I also appreciate and enjoy the little biscuit that accompanies the coffee. Today I had the house made granola for breakfast which was nice and my husband had the omelette which was nice. The omelette was enormous and definitely a very filling meal- too much to get through.
Patrick
Awesome first time at Story Bridge Deli Cafe. I had the omelette and a smoothie and both were delicious - the omelette was huge! I am a big eater and only made it through half of it. The back seating area has a good feel and the service was great!

Tried the Story Bridge Deli Cafe for the first time this morning and had a really enjoyable experience. The smoothies are sooo good and the meals where fast to come out. Recommend the sweet potato rosti. It was delicious. Will definitely go back.

Amazing service, staff and food. Have been coming for years. Great for quick business meetings and family gatherings. Parking is hassle free also.

Home to some of the best home made brownies 😎😍. Thanks team.

unfortynately not a good review. I stopped by the Story Bridge deli this morning for a coffee. The barista was very short and snappy with her fellow staff members while myself and some other customers waited for our orders. I didn't think it was vert professional. To top it off the coffee tasted bitter. There are other better options in the area sorry wont be back.

This is my favourite place. Morning coffee on way to work, breakfast or lunch on the weekend. Staff are very friendly and efficient. Never have to wait to long but you are not rushed. Great food great coffee.

This would have been a good review if they could take constructive feedback.
Coffee was reasonable, fruit plate was good, my wife had an omelette which was good. The problem came in that I ordered the corn fritters and they were lukewarm and stodgy like they were yesterday's leftovers reheated in the microwave. I politely told the waitress that I couldn't eat them because they were really bad and she offered me more, but I opted for some toast in preference. When came time to pay the information had not been passed along. I had to re-explain to the manager that I returned the fritters after one bite (after I complimented everything else) - She abruptly assured me that they were made today and they are one of their most popular meals.
I didn't want to be "that guy" and have it out at the register, so I just left it at that.
Had they been able to take my feedback into polite consideration, this would actually have been a good review.
Needless to say I will not be back, there are plenty of other good choices in the area.

Great staff :-) all very friendly, good coffee made well. Delicious food, nice and cosy. You get a nice treat with every coffee. Has a nice range of deli items too.

Had breakfast at the Deli through the week, the meal was generous in proportion, fresh and delicious. Try the coffee made with coconut milk - fantastic. Great option for those of us who can't have dairy or soy!

BAD Coffee. Go here if you want bad coffee!! Burnt beans and milk! They really should teach their staff to brew the coffee a lot better. On a few occasions recently i have purchased a soy cappuchino and there seems to be a consistently of really bad burnt coffee. I have had to end up throwing it out.

Found my new favourite place for breakfast. YUM!!! Best menu and really lovely staff.

A-MA-ZING. Yum, the fresh deli foods are to die for, completely fresh and authentic tasting! While I was there saw some gorgeous meals going out to diners, I'm definitely going back for lunch too!

Lovely deli but very disappointing food. My partner and I were excited to try The Storey Bridge Deli for lunch. We are locals and think this area has been crying out for a good deli and cafe.
Everything started out wonderfully.
The shop itself is really cute and the outdoor eating area at the back of the shop is lovely.
The waiter who served us was friendly and helpful so we enjoying the experience, until the food arrived.
Both of us ordered the char grilled vegetable sandwich with goats curd on pumpkin bread. Sounded and looked great but after two bites I was wondering where the char grilled veg and goats curd was. I opened my sandwich to find pesto and semi dried tomatoes. No chargrilled veg and no sign of goats curd. None in my partners sandwich either.
I told our waiter our sandwiches only had semi dried tomatoes and pesto and he assured me that is what the sandwich is supposed to be. Since when is a semi dried tomato a char grilled veggie ?
. Where was the goats curd?
The bread was great but am seriously disappointed.
I really hope this place can sort itself out because it's a great idea and obviously the owner and manager care about the business - it shows in the care they have taken with the groceries it sells and the look and feel of the shop.

Amazing!!! Every time I go in for a nice breaky i am never let down, From the customer service to the quality of the food. Always enjoyable to go there as the staff are more than happy to accommodate any changes that I would like make to my meal to suit myself. Lovely staff with lovely smiles. Sure to come back every time

Absolutely amazing! The staff are extremely accomodating and you can tell that customer service is one of there main focuses. I try to go there atleast once a week because there pancakes are absolutely amazing. The combination of bananas and caramel sauce topped off with clotted cream is sensational especially paired with a deluxe hot chocolate. I recommend that whilst in brisbane you go to the storey bridge deli & cafe. So as to the previous comment regarding the pancakes maybe speaking up would be advised as they seem eager to please and more than accomodating to fix any issues.

It's Nice.. It's a cafe.. Great Coffee... So I'm a local @ SBD

I grew up in Melbourne so I know a good coffee. SBD makes a great one rest assured. Brekky is nice, no complaints at all. Generous serves delivered

However what is it with 'Hoity Toity cougars" ordering the most difficult coffees ever. "A half soy/Half skim iced half caf triple mocha latte macchiato" is not winning you any favours with the wait staff. If you put as much effort into your make up as you do into choosing more user friendly coffees I wouldn't be stating the obvious.

For me there are a couple of wait staff that are awesome. (However all are v.good)

Priscilla.. You keep me coming back with that awesome smile and easygoing and professional attitude. The food and coffee is a bonus! If you have caught me checking you out previously then you may be correct. You are quite hot!

There is another young uni type chick that makes a mean coffee usually in the mornings. I would like to give you a substantial high five as after 3 sips on the way to work in my car any tiredness from my slumber is quickly reversed. However I tend to get mild road rage around Morningside due to the caffiene buzz kicking in.

All up>> SBD.. All Good. Go try it for yourself.

Slightly disappointed... .... Slightly disappointed...

My boyfriend and I were searching for a restaurant with nice, indulgent pancakes. We found the menu for Story Bridge Deli Cafe online and were hooked on their pancake description - banana and caramel, a match made in heaven...

However good they sound in theory, we were quite disappointed in real life. My boyfriend asked to swap the clotted cream for mascarpone and I swapped it for yoghurt. The first big disappointment was in portion size (2 small pancakes for $15) which hardly filled up my boyfriend. Secondly there was so little of the caramel sauce, we would argue if there even was any on the pancakes - you couldn't taste it at all. And thirdly, even though we were reassured multiple times my boyfriends pancakes did have lemon mascarpone instead of cream, we are still dubious whether it was lemon mascarpone as it tasted identical to cream... So in essence all we tasted was 2 small pancakes, with banana, strawberries and passionfruit & no caramel for $15...

If we were after a small "healthy" serve of pancakes, it would have tasted nice without the guilty feeling afterwards. However expecting a nice caramel & banana, indulgent pancake, we were left very disappointed, didn't fill us up, feeling like it wasn't anything special and something we could have easily made at home...

My boyfriend did however enjoy the "dirty chai" he had. Was a nice mix of spices and coffee.

This deli/cafe is just amazing. As soon as you walk through the doors, the aroma's flood your senses. Just great !!! The staff are fantastic, very engaging and up lifting. I enjoyed a fantastic Sunday lunch of Thai fish cakes & a freshly made juice. My fish cakes were absolutely delicious. They were accompanied by a beautiful dipping sauce & salad. The juice i selected was very refreshing. A very satisfying meal indeed. Along with their great food they also stock some amazing small goods. I highly recommend this cafe & will definitely be returning for more.

Thankyou so much for your feedback. Regards Rachel Bubb, Storybridge Deli Manager

Unfriendly Waitress. I have been coming to this cafe for my take away coffee for a while, the young girl makes a fantastic coffee, and always knows what I want when walking through the door. I decided to eat in the other day and what a bad experience the waitress was quite rude and abrupt not only to me but to her fellow work mates as well. The food was good, and the atmosphere is good, just a shame about the waitress, businesses these days need to be aware of this sort of behaviour as it can be damaging to the reputation of the place and can lead to bullying claims from other staff members. And nothing against tattoos but when there on the legs and wearing 3/4 pants, and talking about nothing but her tattoos and where the next one is going to be, isn't good either. Words of advise to the owners, waitresses like this can damage your reputation, I was just a customer witnessing this behaviour and not sure what others thought but it's not appealing for me to eat in.

Excellent. Have had wonderful take-away meals - home made savoury tarts, lasagne, ravioli -all excellent; highest quality;
Coffee good and treats were amazing - raspberry chocolate brownie exquisite and a baklava cooked with apple in it - both the best I've ever had.
The seating areas are very pleasant and the service friendly, knowledgeable and on the ball.
Looking forward to trying breakfast and lunch

Great Addition to the Neighbourhood. Having visited on 3 occasions now, this little cafe is a great addition to Kangaroo Point. The Breakfast, Lunch and takeaway options are fantastic and very high quality. It's a pleasure to have mid-morning and afternoon meetings with clients there. They also have a lovely area out the back. The coffee blend is very smooth and has a sweet after-taste, which is unlike most other cafe's serving Merlo....highly recommended. The wait staff have always made us feel very welcome.

Great potential- terrible coffee!. Such a great position and cute little outdoor area. Someone has obviously gone to a lot of trouble to source quality smallgoods and deli items, and the counter fridge was stocked with yummy looking lunchtime items. Sadly though the coffee was a let down twice- first time I sent back an extra shot latte (which was sent out in an extra large glass- apparently extra shot means 250ml of extra milk as well for this 'wannabe' barista) and opted for a long mac instead to reduce the milk amount problem and was served a watered down long black with some froth.
If you're going to charge $4+ a coffee- at least get it right!
David
Just what Kangaroo Point needed. Good atmosphere and good food. Recommended.
