Review Hosokawa Japanese Restaurant - Brisbane

Amazingly delicious Japanese foods. We ordered the festive menu "Hosokawa Ultimate Experience". Beautifully prepared and presented. Full marks to the Chef. 😋👌👏🏆 Great fast service 🙂👍

japanese food lovers!! have you tried @hosokawabne ?!🥰what a great little find in Hamilton!🥳we had a huuugeee feast here the other night!! we ordered: ✨sashimi platter for 2 ($30) ✨seared scallops ($19) ✨agedashi tofu ($15) ✨slow cooked pork belly ($15) ✨nasu dengaku- eggplant ($15) ✨grilled kingfish ($21.9) ✨chicken karaage with udon ($24) ✨whiting panko ($10) ✨wakame salad ($12.5) 🥂umeshu sour ($12- the small glass) 🥂puru momo sparking peach jelly ($10) overall, a pretty nice experience!~ top highlights were, - agedashi tofu: so so delicious we ended up ordering two! unlike other places the tofu is somewhat crispy and not soggy~ i like the difference🥰 -slow cooked pork belly: so tender and incredible broth!!! so so flavourful🤩🤤 -puru momo: oh my goodness what a beautiful drink!! 🤍✨there’s jelly inside and it is so refreshing and delicious!! i would say some dishes such as the grilled kingfish, wakame salad and eggplant were a little underwhelming there were only two small pieces of the kingfish and for such a high price i wouldn’t get it again~ wakame salad, we thought there was so dressing at all, but turns out it’s at the bottom for some reason, with such a small bowl, tossing it was a mess🥲eggplant used to be different when we came a while back, seems that they have changed it and it doesn’t taste as good as before🥺sashimi was alright~ not the freshest but still nice~

Omg! I don’t even want to give one star, it should be no star. Yes, it is really that bad. What happened to the restaurant. Appears they have changed hands again! The standard has dropped 100-fold. It is the most horrible dining experience ever. The sashimi did not even come after 45 mins and we have to cancel the order. No one bothered to come and update us. We have to ask about 4 times and still no food came! The restaurant was not even packed with people. All the waitresses were hovering around the back instead of serving food, topping drinks etc. The sushi was so badly done that it is a complete disgrace to the Japanese cuisine. See the photo for proof. Obviously, they did not have the correct chef. We are still trying to recover from this aweful experience. One thing for sure, they have just lost a long term customer!!!!

I read mixed reviews since the departure of Hosokawa San. I like the convenient location and the Sashimi/Sushi here. A cheaper alternative to the nearby Sono Portside. 😂

Sushi wasn’t at the standard you’d expect from a restaurant. It was below any sushi takeaway shop (taste and presentation wise) which was quite disappointing. Most of the sashimi was fresh except the tuna, Eggplant dish was delicious, and chicken Katsu curry was underwhelming - sweet and the curry tasted diluted.

Not sure why we haven't tried Hosokawa before. This is our new favourite Japanese restaurant for date night. We had the shared Sashime platter for two, the fried tentacles, Kingfish Saikyo marinated in Miso, Hamachi Karaage and for desserts the Sakura mochi and the chocolate brownie both with vanilla ice cream. I had a glass of Pinot and my partner had a Kirin and the bill came to just over $110. Very well price and walked out of there full! The The staff were very friendly as well. Can't wait to come back and try more.

Great venue for authentic Japanese run by Japanese owner. There were multiple Japanese groups dining alongside us last night. Enough said? Still... I really enjoyed our order of grilled eggplant, eel, sashimi plate to share and some hot sake. It was a great meal and not that overpriced contemporary fusion you're getting from other Japanese places in albeit a trendier setting.

My wife and I recently had dinner at Hosokawa for the first time. We will definitely be returning, that's for sure. Despite being flat out busy, the hostess and host were absolutely delightful to deal with. The food was divine. The quality is beyond beautiful.

...only better in Japan! So my dentist was very enthusiastic and friendly during my late Saturday morning appointment -- talking throughout the entire appointment. Bouncing from topic to topic, she finally landed on making unsolicited food recommendations. And although she was Chinese-Australian, she raved about the best Japanese restaurant in the city: the place just next to my favourite gelato place on Racecourse Road in Hamilton, QLD. So here I am excited and a believer even before the food had arrived: the entire jam-packed lot of clientele is Japanese. So good!!

Traditional quality food, very fresh very well prepared and cooked. Wait staff very polite and attentive. Excellent lunch experience

The best food in Brisbane. Can’t beat it. Staff are super helpful and friendly. Food is outstanding.

My favourite Japanese restaurant in Brisbane. Delicious food and excellent service. We will be back.

Best Japanese food in brissie- the sashimi slices are extremely thick and fresh.

Best Japanese restaurant this side of the black stump. I'll be back.

My partner used to live in around this area and go there almost once every week. We love their authentic Japanese food with quality. Sashimi is always very fresh and nicely sliced in chunky size ( you see some serve very thin slice Sashimi which I hate) , service is quick and efficient, always busy dinner time so booking is essential.

The food really good.

Best Japanese food I've had in Brisbane. Sashimi is delicious!
Carmen Mak
The best value and freshest sashimi platter I have had in Brisbane *hands down* ^_^

Hosokawa used to be the go to Japanese Restaurant for my family, everyone loved it and was always excited to dine in there. We went 2 weeks ago for the first time in 5 months mainly due to the lockdown and we were quite dissapointed that night. For a start the new menu is not nearly as good as it was before, there is too many deep fried dishes now, they took off some of the best dishes that somewhat makes the place special like Tomagi, Saba, Rolled up beef, good variety of hand rolled sushi to name a few. We found it hard to choose the dishes from.the new menu that night. We noticed prices has gone up quite a bit and found the quality was not up to the usual standard. Our green tea was quite weak and tasteleaa, we had to ask to a new batch, chop sticks are not the same good quality as before and even napkins. I am not having a go at the establishment, I understand how tough it is to run a restaurant at the moment, but if they increased the price on the menu than food quality is expected to be of the same standard. I hope the owner will go back to the old Hosokawa, please take my review as a positive feedback, I am sure we are not the only one that misses the old Hosokawa.
This place has incredible reviews but my visit was a real disappointment. Had the large sashimi platter and felt sick. The tuna was the main culprit. It was thick and meaty so it was really chewy and left a bad aftertaste. It was also quite stringy. Nothing else we had could save the meal. We also tried to have a sushi platter but they said they ran out of ingredients. I had such high hopes for the supposed best Japanese restaurant in Brisbane, but my experience was terrible.

5.9.2019
This is my favourite Japanese restaurant on the Northside and today I am lunching with my fishing mate Dom. I have a table booking for 12.30pm and when we arrive the table is not ready. We are eventually seated and the Waiter takes our lunch order of 2 Chirashi Sets at the same time as the table next to us.

The table next to us finish their meal and leave. We wait another 20 minutes and enquire about our lunch order. I also inform the Waitress that the four tables nearby have almost finished their meals and we had placed our lunch order before they were even seated.

Long story short, our lunch order was forgotten! Our mood had turned sour. The Chirashi Sets looked good but we had both lost our appetites. The long wait was annoying and our food tasted bland. This is a fail Hosokawa!

Wonderful meal, quick service and nothing was a problem for staff. We dined with people that had nut and shellfish allergies, they made sure everything was perfect for them.
Natalie Nguyen
Please come if you are looking for the best cut of Sashimi from the master, authentic cuisines and attentive service from friendly staffs. This little gem would offer you all of these which I never disappointed. Lunch offers are also good value and well sorted, please check out the opening date and bookings are essential.

Hosokawa Japanese Restaurant has been a resident on Ascot’s Racecourse Road for many years. We used to frequent it when we lived closer by, but somehow had never gotten around to doing a post on it. Hosokawa has built up a solid reputation among locals for good, traditional Japanese food at a not exorbitant price, and we thought to revisit it one weekend afternoon (on a Saturday, as they are not open for lunch on Sundays) when we had a hankering for fish.

Had a season gathering at this renowned izakaya last night in group of four. I always love to go in a group because I can taste more dishes by sharing them with my friends. Needless to say, there were lots of dishes that we ordered to satisfy our craving of nice Japanese food. We ordered: large sashimi platter, Buta kakuni, kaki fry, croquette moriawasa, tempura moriawasa, nabeyaki udon, ikayaki in salt and nasu dengaku. Manager has to divide our orders in three sections otherwise the table cannot accommodate all of them at the same time.
Sashimi still presents with thick cut of salmon and tuna, which is Hosokawa’s style. Broth of the nebeyaki udon is very tasteful, buta kakuni just melts in my month and the three different styles (original, cream & curry) of croquettes is a new experience to me, which is interesting. Honestly, tempura is good but nasu dengaku is slightly let down. Overall, Hosokawa is still one of my favourite Japanese restaurant.

Jun 27, 2015 Rating 4/5
Hosokawa is the best izakaya in Brisbane. I have been dining in this restsurant so many times. Everytime, I walk in, the first thing is to say "Hello" to the chef/owner Mr Akio Hosokawa. He then will prepare the best sashimi patter for me. I like his way of "thick cut" on the salmon and tuna, and the most that I like is Sea Urchin. Someone told me that Hosokawa is the best sushi chef in Brisbane, which cannot be denied. Sometimes, I like to sit in front of him watching him making the sushi and hand rolls, I do appreciate his sophiticated culinary skill. One thing I need to mention, don't forget to order the gyoza, Kaki Fry and Ikayaki. They are all my favourites.

I have been here numerous and countless times for the past year or so. No disappointment anytime. The food is exceptionally amazing with fresh sashimi and presentation. Great customer service. There is also a gelato place next door which is a plus because I always drop by there to have dessert afterwards. Highly recommend this place, the best Japanese restaurant out there!

We visited this restaurant three times following the suggestion of a relative who is a Japanese food critic and enthusiast. All three times we enjoyed the food and the lovely service. Fresh sushi was greatly different from that in other sushi places. The smell was so pleasant despite having raw fish which shows the freshness of the meal.

As much as I try to fight it and constantly search for something better, I just keep coming back to Hosokawa as my favorite Japanese restaurant in Brisbane. The food is just legit. Authenticity down to the details. I’ve uploaded a photo of my most recent meal which was just a lunch special but you really can’t go wrong with anything off the menu here. Always balanced flavors, thoughtful with the condiments, fresh ingredients. You can really taste the quality. The last couple of times I’ve been, I’ve been a bit disappointed with the service. It’s not that the waitresses are rude, just that they seem distracted.. very un-Japanese. Still the food makes up for it and at the end of the day I’m there to eat. Subarashi Oishisa Desu🇯🇵

Food is amazing with really fresh sashimi and authentic Japanese dishes and 5 stars if I was only rating the food. The let down is the (lack of) service and unfriendly attitude of staff. We were told that we could only have our table for an hour which wasn't a problem. However the floor manager hovered about us trying to hurry along the orders even before everyone had arrived. Then once we were ready there was no one around to take our orders. Despite being rudely reminded again that they needed the table back in an hour, we weren't given any cutlery when our meals came out and couldn't flag anyone down. Once finished we thought they would give us the bill (a telling sign to move on). Instead after finally flagging the lady down she yelled out 'bill is over there' pointing to the inside area. Such a shame... Too many other great Japanese restaurants around to put up with this rudeness.

One of Brisbane's finest Japanese restaurants, and located so close to me... And I have never gone before today. So, my girlfriend is a strong lover of Japanese cuisine, this is one stop she said we had to make into a date night. Also worked out perfectly for a post-movie meal 😊. ... But first tea

Wonderful fresh food with great service. Value for money but they don’t skimp on quality. Tempura was perfectly cooked. Miso was so clean and tasty. Craving it all and can’t wait to come back!

Went for lunch on Thursday and the place was extremely busy. I had high expectations as this place was recommended by a friend. Staff were friendly, the place was busy, and food didnt take too long to come out. Although portions were generous, some parts of the rice were seasoned well and some parts were completely unseasoned. For me, the rice is just as important as the sashimi, and on the day that I had it, it wast done well. Overall, if youre looking for a filling lunch, decently good quality sashimi, for a reasonable price ($24.90) then this bowl will do just that.

Hosokawa is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Brisbane. Sashimi is always fresh, and really good value for money. The service is usually prompt even when we haven’t made a booking and the waitstaff are always friendly. 10/10 love Hosokawa :)

This restaurant closes on Monday as well but hasnt update the opening hour. It was my first time going there but couldnt make it, unfortunately :(:(:(

Love this place. The sushi is so fresh and generous in portions. Keep trying other Japanese... but keep coming back to this one. Their grilled eggplant is also the best.
Sasha Rebekah
the best all you can eat in Brisbane. Amazing flavours and the freshest quality of produce you could possible ask for. great service and friendly staff. they are always happy to help you select the best Sake just for you. Keep up the great work
Natali Cheng
Their lunch special, chirashi set is the best!! The service is always good and staff are very friendly.
Very baby friendly too, even on their busy day, they will try to accommodate prams!
Alex Faulkner
So Delicious! Very generous portion sizes on the sushi rolls, so much salmon on the rainbow rolls! Would definitely recommend if you like a good sashimi
Tim Trotman
Honest and flavorsome Japanese food that gives you a real sense of skill and culture. Plus, they're not afraid to experiment from time to time.
Sarah
Super impressed with this restaurant. Hands down the best sushi in Brisbane!
Sashimi was fresh, good portions. We ordered the chirashi lunch set (comes with a bowl of miso soup). The bowl was not padded full with only rice but it was loaded with sashimi on the top, just the right amount to eat with the sushi rice at the bottom. Service was good, did not have to wait long for food. Felt it has good value for money. Definitely recommend!

Worst costomer service that we ever had , very rude staff very careless manager , if you go there they force you order for each person of your family or group to order at least $20 that’s really unacceptable , part of my family left the restaurant before the food coming as result of their behaviour , never come back

Wish this place opened 7 days a week. Seriously delicious food. Simple Japanese fresh ingredients and excellent customer service. Sashimi is of high standard and a good variety of a la carte dishes. Good night out where you can hear your conversation.

Sushi was very fresh. We came here during lunch time and their lunch menu price is very reasonable. Would recommend you to cal and reserve A table first because they are very busy.
Jenny
High quality, reasonable price. Excellent service:) very impressive with the freshness of the sashimi. Would highly recommend. But book ur table before you come

⚡️My first review on Zomato
(I am not a native English speaker so please feel free to correct me if I made a mistake
⚡️This restaurant is quite cozy. You’d better make a reservation a few days before enjoying your amazing Japanese food! Or else you will be offered an outside seat. It would be a little bit hot siting outside in a summer afternoon. You may even have to wait since Hosokawa is really a hit place!
⚡️I have to say the sashimi here is extremely fresh and juicy. Such a high quality! And please look at the picture. Omg... that’s insanely beautiful and colorful!! If you’re keen on Japanese food, don’t hesitate to check out this restaurant! I reckon I will visit Hosokawa many times! (And that’s true!
Highly recommended👍👍👍👍👍
Hong🌈

Great little japanese place on racecourse rd. It always seems busy , service was great and though located amongst other retailers it did have a japanese feel to it. The food was great, the terryaki chicken had lots of flavour , salmon croquette👌. We will be back.

First time trying Hosokawa - definitely won't be the last!
The staff were all friendly and very attentive. Our food was brought out very quickly which was great since it was so busy!
For entree we ordered the small sashimi. It's one of the best sashimi plates I've ever had! Fresh, thickly cut sashimi with a lot of variety 🙌🏻
We ordered the grilled eggplant, salt squid, chicken yakitori and grilled eel as mains. Our favourites of the night would be the eggplant, squid and eel.
Overall a wonderful experience with quick service, friendly staff and beautiful food.
Avin Gopalan
Consistent as always, probably the 10th time I’ve been here and their sashimi never lets me down.

Atmosphere dies down around 7-8pm, needs to be open a bit later, as it would create bit of a buzz/liveliness 👍🏾
Alice Yin
We went there for lunch on a weekday. It was still quite busy. But I could see why after the lunch: Fresh sashimi, crispy tempura, quality wasabi and the price was reasonable.
Pragindy
Among one of the best restaurants I have ever visited, Hosokawa never disappoints. Ths waiters are always friendly and we are constantly receiving complimentary sushi. Their gyoza and yakitori skewers are full of flavor. This restaurant deserves every positive review it gets!
Jasmyin.tay
We came by late and we were still welcomed by super friendly staff. We chose to sit by the sushi counter which was a really great choice as we saw the chef in action and even scored some additional salmon belly which was so yummy!

Their food is not cheap but when you see the portions and you taste the quality of it, it's really worth it. The pork belly was soft and tender with just the right amount of sweetness in the sauce, the vegetable tempura was sliced just right so everything is cooked to perfection and the eggplant miso was huge and soft, amazingly wonderful to the palate.

The small sashimi platter was $28 which we thought was expensive until we had it in front of us, 3 slices each of the white fish, salmon and tuna, 2 slices each of scallop, octopus, squid, salmon belly, tuna belly and a whole spoonful of roe. That's good value!

Definitely coming back here soon for more sashimi and friendly service!

I was a bit sceptical about the rating of this place but not anymore. 5 stars! Wow! Amazing flavours. I just had the best tofu in my life: the deep fried tofu in broth. Very balanced flavours, nothing overpowering, great textures and freshness. Orders some sushi and loved the simplicity of good sushi. Rolls are well prepared and generous, as for any sushi the rice is the key. This wasn't your average Aussie sushi, no sir this was at least something that inspires thoughts of Japan... I was so happy to eat here, I loved the quality ingredients and freshness of the food. Prices are reasonable and quantities generous. I'm coming back no matter what. Tuna karage, fresh salmon rolls, tofu in broth... All matched to a cold Kirin, perfect dinner! Well done guys!!!

Nothing flash about the place but the food is excellent. We were on the hunt for great Sushi in Brisbane which believe it or not is hard to find. Most glamours places have a great atmosphere but average food. This place was different it was great all the way through. Great quality fish and great staff! photos are on Instagram ID masatotami. Follow me for more food adventures around Brisbane and beyond

The best Japanese restaurant in Brisbane in terms of the quality for price. We always leave happy. If you want good Japanese food, you need to go to a restaurant with a genuine Japanese chef, like this one.
Recommend booking especially for dinner.
Coffee Snob
I come here as often as I can, particularly when my dad is visiting from out of town. We love having a lunch date here, the menu is excellent and portions are fairly generous. For a timid raw sushi eater such as myself, the thick-cut sashimi can be a bit confronting, but I see lots of Japanese clientele so the restaurant is obviously staying true to their cuisine. Love it!
Major Eatingstuff
I hadn't visited for a few years, but today's lunchtime chirashi was superb. A very generous serve of tasty, fresh fish atop perfect sushi rice. Oishi!
Chensha
I have been here more than 5 times and honestly there is no other place I would go in Brisbane for fresh thick sashimi slices!! Make sure to go at lunchtime to order one of the lunch specials, most priced around $20! I always get the chirashi bowl. Definitely worth your value for money and you get miso soup on the side! Also maybe if you timed lunch well, Milani gelato next door will be open and can grab some dessert.. ;)
Danelle Lim Yun
This place serves the best sashimi I've had so far in Brisbane. The fish slices were fresh and cut into thick, juicy slices. There was a variety of fish served as well. The service was great and I am definitely coming back again.
Update: The tempura udon was mindblowingly good. That soup was so sweet. The sashimi set was really worth the money and I would love to keep coming back here for my fix of Japanese food.
Wander Wonder Wonton
I found Hosokawa on Zomato by fluke. It was listed on a trending list for Brisbane so thought we would give it a shot. Thank goodness we did, that kind of secret should be shared far and wide!. Hidden in a bunch of shops on Racecourse Road, Hosokawa is an unassuming but busy restaurant. There was a brief wait for a table, always a good sign. In saying that, there are only about a dozen or so tables, I would look to book next time.
Rebecca
A quite impressive place. The three items I ordered were of good quality but the Sashimi was exceptional, perfectly cut and nice sized pieces. The vegetable tempura was a good variety of vegetables (green beans, eggplant, potato, pumpkin and capsicum ). Was pleasantly surprised by the bill considering how much I ordered.
ELLEN BELLUCCI
We ordered pork Kakuni (pork cooked in soy sauce and sweet wine sauce). The dish was very small, only two small pieces of pork belly without anything else, pork itself lack of flavor!! The overall price is relatively high (compare with similar type of Japanese restaurants), but the presentation and flavor are below average, service is good though. Our friends went once before, and felt the same way. We both won't go again
Daz
Regular visitor here, great service and reasonably priced. Love this place! Sashimi is really fresh. Pork belly rendered well and succulently sweet

Hosokawa is hands down my family's favourite Japanese restaurant in Brisbane. There's no other restaurant that hits the value to freshness ratio better. We come here whether it's for a special occasion, or just a mid-week treat. Only problem at times is getting a table as they're always busy! - rightfully so of course.
Picolas
We ordered a number of dishes between 3 people. We left feeling somewhat disappointed, and hungry. The quality is good but for the price you pay, we expected more. Just... underwhelming.
Lin
My bf and I tried the chirashi don & tempura set for lunch. We were seated at the sushi bar. While both dishes were pretty yummy, it was very much a turn off to see flies landing on the salmon, tuna and etc at the sushi bar, especially since we know these seafood are served raw. Would recommend to maybe have some lids to cover the seafood.
Elle King
One of the worst restaurant I have ever been to. I want to rate 0 if possible. Food is so overpriced and everything tastes like miso with excessive sugar. Sashimis are poorly cut with skin still on. Chicken skewers are burnt on one side and raw on the other. Too stingy to leave any napkin on the table and gave just one sheet upon request. Those unreasonably good reviews look quite suspicious especially with the same person posting it everywhere.
Grace Lung
Came here during a busy lunch time for a small celebratory lunch. We were seated at the sushi counter which we didn't mind. The service was pretty good despite the busyness. It was interesting to watch the master at work and feel a sense of privacy with our backs the rest of the restaurant. We ordered the small sashimi platter, yakitori and squid plus rice. The sashimi seemed pretty generous with thick cut pieces. I personally prefer thinner pieces but can't complain. Yakitori and squid were good too.

Would like to come back to try the sukiyaki and shabu shabu.

There's space in the outdoor seating for prams and they have high chairs.
Tom
Aweseom sashimi platter, great value.nice thick fresh fish steaks. Yakitori are also good. Waitress recommended Omlette eel as chefs special which is my fav dish of the night. Not the typical eel sushi you have in any other shop. Will definitely come back.
Eatingtheweekaway
Always a reliable place for Japanese. Generous servings of fresh seafood even for the lunchtime specials . Even if you're not a sushi or sashimi fan plenty on the menu to satisfy- try the miso grilled eggplant and the soy and miso marinated grilled fish just to name a few
Hihocherie
Been to Hosokawa multiple times for the quality of the sashimi alone- their lunch specials are great value for money and the ala carte dinner isn't bad either. I don't rate the service or the ambience because little things like table water were missed for almost the whole meal despite us asking at the beginning and again towards the end. The food is consistently outstanding- just don't expect too much (or treat like your local takeaway joint for seaweed salads and salmon rolls- have some respect for the chef, people) and you'll have a good time.
Erandi Hettiarachchi
An authentic Japanese restaurant tucked away on racecourse road. We had a sashimi platter, sake salmon, spicy tuna roll and the special which was a deep fried tuna. All the dishes were well prepared and tasted fresh. The price is a little on the higher side but for good sashimi it was well worth it. The staff are friendly and the food came out within 10 minutes of ordering. The dishes were quite filling we enjoyed every bite. Will definitely come back for more.
Cecilia Ma
Sashimi was nice! HOWEVER!!!! Do not ever try the Shabu Shabu Hotpot!!!!! Only want to say what on it!!!! The most expensive but the worst Hotpot ever! We had to order 2 serves (1 serve is $38.5) as a minimum order, and the food turned out to be tap water boiled with some cheap bok choi and half onion!!!
Churchill Yao
Sashimi is good, Eel is not bad, but WTH IS THE HOT POT?????????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I spent almost $80 on this hot pot! WTH? Only cabbage and tap water boiled together with half an onion! WTH? And you have to order two serves of this!
EmilinaMay
Teriyaki chicken avocado roll oh my goodness to die for!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
S Fingers
Awesome, awesome lunch specials - (tue to sat) - their sashimi rice bowl is THE BOMB. Dinner is great too, but it's rather $$$$$. This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in brisbane.
MadPaddy
It's awesome to go to a Japanese restaurant run by Japanese staff. The staff are so nice, typical of Japanese people. The food is authentic and really good. If you go here for dinner you're ok. I had lunch here once and the sashimi was awful. It was like they didn't cut it correctly. It was chewy and I ended up leaving. But I've been back since and it was better. Please add Okonomyaki to your menu!
Ching Tan
If you want Sahimi, this is the place.
All staff speak Japanese .
Best and the only one in Brisbane to get real Japanese food.
It is always crowded with Japanese expatriate and local Australian Japanese.
Fresh seafood and skilful sashimi master chef.
Slick Chef Extraordinaire. Gangster Of Food.
Amazing sashimi, sushi and Izakaya! Very friendly and welcoming staff. I enjoy coming to Hosokawa, it is always a pleasure and I am looking forward to the next visit.
Doc Stigmergy
Authentic Japanese food that is exceptional! If you want the same style food (in its simplest and most elegant form) you would buy in Shinjuku then head to Hosokawa's.

We've followed Hokasawa's head chef since his days at Oshin restaurant in the city way back in the early 90's. We were ecstatic that he and his business partner decided to open thier Japanese restaurant in our local neighbourhood of Ascot.

It's not a fancy and up market Japanese dinning experience like Sono at Portside however, what it lacks in panache, it's more than make up by the no-fuss, high quality of the food. On that front it is on par with some of the best in town.

This is a little low key Japanese restaurant that gives the big boys the run for their money, and speaking of money their prices are reasonably cheap for an authentic and fully a la carte Japanese restaurant.

We'll be coming back for as long as they keep their door open.

MynameisFood.
A traditional Japanese restaurant located on Racecourse Rd in Ascot/Hamilton is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants to go to. The fact that it is also in Northside gives it another thumbs up for me since it is closer to where I am. Expect simple casual interior with a touch of Japanese flair here and there but remember to book in advance as it gets booked out at nights and nearly during lunch time. Another thing is that they are closed on Sundays. Price wise is quite straight to the point and not overly priced but you do get generous serving sizes and for its well priced dishes, it allows you to enjoy both Japanese cuisine in a traditional Izakaya setting.

I always take family and friends here but today's encounter left me thinking otherwise. Today's service was incredibly disappointing. I had booked for a large group but the staff was rude about our big number. The bigger the group = more money for them so I don't know why they'd be so rude and unfriendly. I am very disappointed and I'm definitely not recommending this place.
Lydia
Fresh and great portion of food. Love the chirashi don- it's got a variety of different fish and most importantly they are thick! Friendly staff. A place a always come back.
Nancha
I love this restaurant. Always serve fresh and amazing sashimi. The price are very cheap if you compare the quality and quantity to 5 stars Japanese restaurant near the riverside or even in the Jupiter at GC. My Recommendation to book the table so you won't miss out.

i've been to this place about 3 times already, the first time i came here i ordered the Ten Don and i was far from impressed -i'm not a fan of tempura and this was just that! lol i can't blame the restaurant though, I blame my partner for not letting me look at the menu. it was actually quite tasty and the produce used was fresh.
the last 2 times we've been there i've gotten the Sashimi Set and OMG that is AMAZING! the sashimi is THICK and fresh and delicious. it comes with Miso, Rice and Pickled Veg -it's TO DIE FOR!
my partner is a lil more adventurous, he's had the Chirashi Set, the Bento box AND the Sushi set....
the food is consistently amazing.

Food was awesome but the waiter was rude. We had booked 4 people and one baby but they gave us 4 seats only. When we asked for another chair, the staff told us that next time we had to tell them we had a baby (without assuming it may have been their fault). We had a seat inside but we're told that our table was in fact outside... Even though there were plenty of tables inside. It really soured the experience... Not driving all this way for rude service again...

If you are not Japanese, I would suggest you not to go to Hosokawa.
My friends and I had ordered a couple of shashimi sets.
The shashimi looked pale, dry, chewy and taste like ice.
When we look at the other tables of groups of Japanese (maybe tourists or residents around),
the colour of their shashimi were look rich with higher quality.

We paid the same amount of money, we didn't know why we have different quality of shashimi.
Maybe they think we don't know what shashimi actually is and gave us something not up to standard.

Also, there were many flies, I saw the flies landed on the food and the chef still serve to the customers. I can't imagine the flies buried in the rubbish and then stick the bacteria on our food.

It was a very bad experience
Chloe
Lovely little Jap restaurant, reasonable price for a big plate of fresh sashimi, wish they put some ice underneath to keep the freshness of the fish during hot summer.
Kate Parrott
Very traditional Japanese. Went with a group of friends for a end of year get together. We ordered lots of little dishes to share and it worked really well. We ordered edamame beans to start, vegetables wrapped in beef, pork belly, gyoza and potato croquettes for entree. We then ordered a small sashimi platter This was tasty but I struggled to eat it all as it was cut a little too thick for my liking. I've only just started eating raw fish so need to build up to this. Maybe the disclaimer should be - not for beginners. We also ordered yakatori and vegetable tempura. Good came out quickly and served hot. The service was also very efficient. Will return.

Another great Japanese place that is very authentic. The price is pretty good for the quality of food that you get. The sashimi sizes are huge and is always very fresh! The staff are also very friendly and helpful. Must book in advance because they are always booked out (especially during weekends)!
Jevon
Cute outlet, with a pleasant atmosphere inside the shop. Had the una don set which was just unagi on rice with miso soup on the side. The unagi was very well prepared and I was quite satisfied! Also ordered extra hotate sashimi, I absolutely loved the sweet tasting scallops. Overall, great place to have lunch - many lunch deals and many people have recommended the chirashi don to me, will definitely be back again to try it out!

Hosokawa is still one of the best Japanese restaurant in Brisbane! Great food great service! Love their sashimi platter, sushi nigiri, chicken katsu, tenzaru soba, terriyaki steak! But it is always very busy, booking is highly recommended!
AnitaOnChi
Fantastic authentic Japanese food, with sushi prepared fresh right in front of you. Sushi, sashimi, soba noodles and tempura. This place does book out, so make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment!
Jay
If you are after Sashimi this is your place however if sushi or tempura are more your thing perhaps go elsewhere. Service and atmosphere were average.
HotPotato
Am never, ever disappointed at Hosokawa. Steadily working our way through the menu and have yet to experience a bad dish. Sashimi, sushi, tempura, karaage, udon - all incredible. We order the eggplant every time, it is that good. After dinner, head to the gelato place next door.
Piffthemagicdragon
Great seafood tempura udon. Most authentic Japanese cuisine I have had in Brisbane. Would have liked to try the sukiyaki, but there was a two person order minimum. Staff are very nice. Conveniently located next to the Malany Ice Cream vendor for dessert.
Food Lover Rin
Brilliant!
Wonderful staff and very authentic Japanese cuisine. The sashimi looked amazing!
We had some starters and the sukiyaki hotpot which were all delicious!
After living in Japan for 18months I was delighted to find about hosokawa.
It's a good sign when there are many tables of Japanese diners in a Japanese izakaya.
They even had umeshu (plum wine) but unfortunately no yuzushu my favorite alcoholic beverage from the land of thee rising sun. Highly recommended!
Brisfoodiefangirl
I really enjoyed my dining experience at Hosokawa. The staff were extremely friendly and the food came out quickly which is what you need for a lunch break. I would definitely return as the food was very authentic and reasonably priced.
Kate
Really delicious Japanese food! Surpass my expectations! Very generous serving size of the sashimi platter. Udon is chewy and soup is tasty. If only they are more baby friendly and provide high chair and also provide pictures with the sushi menu, it will be even better!! Would definitely go back and recommend to others!!
Paul Chan
Absolutely best Japanese cuisines in Brisbane. Fresh ingredients and generous serving, the service was excellent. Price is good for the quality you're getting. Highly recommending it to everyone. But booking is essential... a place you must go if you're like Japanese curisine.
John B
Hosokawa is certainly one of the best Japanese restaurants in Brisbane. The high standard of food is similar to Sono, however, the restaurant decor and atmosphere is closer to a casual dining experience than a fine one. For a special occasion, Sono is probably a better choice, but for a traditional Japanese restaurant you can visit regularly, Hosokawa is a great, cheaper alternative.

The sushi and sashimi is fresh and authentic. I wish they would expand (and maintain their high standards).
Seanieee
Love it!. Definitely one of the best jap food in town. Surprised by the generous slices of sashimi, reasonable price. Really enjoyed the grilled eggplant, highly recommended. Very friendly staff, squeeze us in altho we didn't have a reservation during busy lunch time. Will be back for more :)
CS
Love this place - it's my secret gem for a good quality of sashimi :)

Without a doubt, Racecourse Road has become my new 'Happy Place'. I go there whenever I have anything to celebrate or just to make sure I have an enjoyable night out. With a recent happy announcement, I thought it would be a great opportunity to grab dinner at Hosokawa, which I have been wanting to try for quite a long time. I was very pleased that I managed to make a booking that day, because it was the last table before the whole store was booked out. The store itself was quite small and cozy. I really liked the environment, simple but elegant. The menu was quite extensive, consisting of quite a number of pages. I ordered quite a significant number of things to share. First to arrive for the evening was our Grilled Eggplant. It had a mildly sweet sauce on top, and was grilled to perfection. The texture was just right, and it was definitely warm and comforting. Next up, we got to try the fried oyster. Compared to the oysters that I have had at other Japanese restaurants, the ones at Hosokawa were considerably larger, and had a much lighter batter. It was also a definite plus that it came out piping hot. The sauces and salads on the side also offered quite a refreshing twist to what would have been quite a heavy dish. My companions really enjoyed this dish. The highlight of my night came next. The large Sashimi platter was absolutely stunning. I found the fish to be exceptionally fresh, and generously thick cut. The wasabi was the proper type, being freshly ground instead of the processed ones from a tube. We advised the chef we had a liking for salmon, and we note that there was larger portion of salmon than the other types, which was great. I also found the tuna and kingfish to be quite delicious though. Beef Tataki came next. The beef was nicely marbled and tender. The crushed garlic and spanish onion added a whole lot of zing. It was served with quite a refreshing dipping sauce, and I really liked it. We also had the gyoza. This was one of the better gyozas tha
Victoriali102
Best Sashimi in Brisbane!. Love this place. Was introduced to it a few weeks ago and have been back several times since! Generous servings of sashimi at good prices, and always fresh. Cosy atmosphere too.
Peter Henley
Really impressed, great food, large servings and very well priced. Sashimi was thick cut and fresh. Well worth a visit !
Silkwillow
Management have an attitude. Had a terrible waitress that argued with me when I insisted the tuna was not defrosted properly hence affecting the texture that tasted WRONG! Will not be returning to line the pockets of terrible wait staff or owners that keep such bad service!
Luv Brissie
The owner yelled at a waitress right in front of us. The food was good but that incident ruined the whole experience...
Jggraphic
Dine in, maybe... Take-away, no chance. The meals looked delicious on the tables but we were not dining out. We ordered take-away off the table menu. The 15 piece sashimi platter had maybe six nice pieces on it. The rest was just scrappy small off cuts covered in skin. The mackerel was small, thin and dried out, even though we were eating within five minutes of collecting the order. The squid/octopus was uncleaned with a creamy gunk inside. The buta kakuni was a disgraceful serving size, cold and tough! Maybe it was a once off, maybe not. Disappointing to think that it was ok for them to deliberately provide such a comparatively awful meal just because weren't dining in. We will not be returning.
Hsieh.tien
Honest Japanese Food. My goto restaurant for sashimi and sushi fix and any other celebrations. Some might find his cuts rustic but his sashimi is a favourite of mine.
Denisemchee
Great sashimi and great value!. Sono at Portside is by far my all time favourite Japanese restaurant in Brisbane - however it is a little expensive for me to eat there all the time. After hearing mixed reviews from friends and colleagues, I came to Hosokawa with my cousin during a week night. Didn't expect it to be so busy so we didn't make a booking. The waitress said they were fully booked but if we wanted she could seat us at the sushi bar - which we didn't have a problem with. I ordered 3 serves of Kingfish, 2 serves of Tuna, 1 serve of salmon and 1 serve of scallop sashimi (pictured) I also ordered a few serves of nigiri sushi for myself which I didn't take a photo of. When my sashimi came out, I was very impressed with the quality and freshness of the fish and the thickness of the cut - it was delicious - probably some of the best sashimi I have ever had. Despite being so busy that night the service was friendly, we didn't wait long at all for our food to be served, and when we were leaving, Mr Hosokawa himself came out to thank me personally. Will definitely be back again!
Sam
Good. Food was delicious and service was lovely. I did find it to be quite over priced for what we ordered - however, this is not unique to this Japanese restaurant.
Stu3285
Mr A. As good as it gets best value sashimi in brisbane.
Leong.jc
Brilliant, simply brilliant. I love this place, the Chirashi lunch special is by far the best value Japanese meal bar none. The sashimi has a brilliant texture and subtle taste. Service is always prompt and friendly and there has got to be something to be said for the bus loads of Japanese tourists that always seem to pack out each and every lunch service.

To the person "Mobile Reviewer" from Melbourne who simply said the Sashimi was not fresh, I got news for you buddy, fresh doesn't necessarily mean better. If you get a freshly caught salmon or tuna, the flesh has no flavor, there is a process where sashimi is aged to give texture and a fuller, rich flavor. And by the way, practically every piece of sushi or sashimi sold in Australia has been frozen at some point or another, sometimes up to three weeks.

Go try this place for yourself, I've tried almost everything on the menu and its all brilliant, but the sashimi is really a stand out for me.
Yusha
Over rated. sashimi platter was not even fresh, can't finish anything.
Carmen Mak
I love their sashimi!!!. Hosokawa is renowned for their quality fresh seafood. I had heard about this little gem from a few friends and I decided to visit Hosokawa for the first time about one year ago. And I have been back many times since then. I am amongst many people a huge fan of their sashimi platter! Really fresh fish and shellfish and very reasonably priced at $32 for a large platter. I also love sipping of their warm sake and I like the authentic Japanese decor inside the restaurant. Hosokawa is THE place to go to for fresh tasty sashimi and sushi in Brisbane!
Jane_maree1960
Best Japanese in Brisbane. Seriously. I've eaten here many times, and I've never encountered the "rude staff" other reviewers have mentioned. Staff have always been friendly and accommodating. The food has got to be close to the best Japanese in Brisbane. The fish is always fresh and delicious. I usually order the mixed platters which never disappoint.
Junkmegently
This is a restaurant I would visit frequently when visiting Brisbane - such delicious and authentic food. After my last visit I will NOT be returning as there was a waitress who was utterly rude and unaccommodating. I had booked and we were placed at a table under the air conditioner. As it was cold we asked to move to the vacant table and were adamantly told no - not because it was booked or for a special client, but because it would be 'too confusing for staff as they were busy'. I expressed my disappointment at the counter and the owner pretended not to hear. We left without eating.
Oznulife
I tired twice. The first time was good experience. I just ate sashimi mix platter with a bowl of rice. The second time was disappointing, the sashimi was cut too thick and had kinda 'hard tissue' stuff. So I could only give 5 out of 10 marks.
Buys.or.sales
Over rated restaurant. Average japanese food and very unfriendly staff. I was going to try a few more dishes after hearing about the place, but didnt end up doing it because the waitress was so unfriendly and rushing during the whole time!
Jamakinmehungry
OH MY SASHIMI. I didn't believe anything could really melt in your mouth until i tried the sashimi from this place. Absolutely amazing, a must try! Only downside was the mandatory $20 pp cost requirement which i felt was rather weird even though most items were around the $18+ mark. Other then that, honestly try the sashimi
Hazechichi
Best japanese restuarant at brisbane. I like this restaurant a lot, food are amazing, reasonable yet fresh! true Japanese cooperator and waitress, fresh wasabi, not the one from tube, everything taste great, truly unable to critique.

and lunch set is so much cheaper with same quality!!!! First class food, environment inside are not too bad..but who cares as soon as food is delicious!!!! 10 x big thumbs!
Nina
Best Japanese I have had in Brisbane. I have never had such fresh, delicious sashimi! Very reasonably priced too. I absolutely loved this place and would recommend to everyone. I will be coming back.
Nwm1982
TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I booked a Valentine's Day Dinner this year on the 30/01/2014. I phoned on Thursday the 13/02/2014 to confirm my booking. I was told by the girl that they had no record of my booking despite me having phone records indicating the call. I then asked to speak to the manager or owner, after several minutes I was told the Manager was too busy to talk to me even though I could hear them discussing the situation in the background. TERRIBLE SERVICE WILL NEVER RECOMMEND. All other suitable venues are now booked.
Kristen
There is a reason they are always so busy!. Always love it here! Quite good value, very fast service and delicious food. My favourites are the yasai nikumaki and chicken yakitori. My husband devours a large sashimi platter whenever we go. Definitely plan ahead and make a reservation as they are always busy!
Fredlimes1112
Really Good Sashimi. Very fresh and well prepared sushi. Prices are reasonable, particularly when compared to nearby competitors. The miso eggplant is delicious and the bento boxes are great for a picnic lunch. Wait times can stretch out a bit, but I just tell myself that it is because the food is all prepared fresh.
Julianne
Fabulous Food. Everything on the Menu is wonderful.
My favourites are the Sushi Set for Lunch and Shabu Shabu for Dinner.
The service is prompt and friendly.
Lashez
Best Japanese food in Brisbane amazing you know when it's full of japanese people that it's the real deal! Even tho I live on the East side I will make it my local. Love it!
Can Di Suen
Fresh Sashimi and nice Jap Food. Went for celebrate birthday on a Wednesday night.
Not full when we got in and staff were polite and friendly.
We ordered plenty of food and most of them were very good.
Had a great nice and end up spending $50 pp with full tummy.
SweetieSweet
Love the sashimi lunch but the staff are a bit rude. Not one time, but four times in 3 weeks. Not good for a yummy restaurant.
I will still come for lunch when I have the cravings but not with friends though. What a potty.
IamJapanese
Nice. Having been recommended by friends, we tried Hosokawa one night.
For the quality of the food, the price was very reasonable.
No wonder they are always busy.
Mandy83
Unexciting experience. The sashimi wasn't the freshest I've tried and the agadeshi tofu was rather bland. The service wasn't exceptional either. There is better Japanese in Brisbane. (Sushi Edo, Sakana, Bird's Nest )
Pandh10
YUMMY. Fresh sashimi,,, good service and excellent food.
Easily one of the best Japanese restaurants in Brisbane!
Finecritique
BAD. Just HORRIBLE!! Never go. Went with my family. They take your glass before you finish and the servings were for ants. We love a good Japanese meal but we had to order to meals for each person! A rip off as well not to mention staff that take your glass before you finish.
Poppy Simonidis
Would never go again.. This evening my 3 children and i went to dine at hosokawa. The service wasn't good at all, the wait staff consistently hurried us through our meals and for expensive prices the servings were tiny! We paid $180 for small servings and rude customer service when Sono is just as close. There was no authenticity and was a very limited menu. Living in Ascot doesn't mean you can afford terrible value meals
Susan230
Should I really spread the word?. Hosokawa is a favourite Japanese restaurant of my whole family. Delicious Japanese food - I crave the chirashi sushi and the nasu degaku (Japanese eggplant). If you like real Japanese food you will love this place.
Mosushi
Most authentic japanese food in brisbane. Hosokawa-san is an ex-Sono chef who was trained in Japan. The price is reasonable and service is warm and swift. I go here regularly and haven't had a bad experience.
Mary
Authentic!. The most authentic Japanese restaurant in the city! Lovely staff and extremely fresh fish, cut thick! I love it and I go very often!
Dan Badd
Fantastic. No other place in Brisbane quite reminds me of the fantastic little restaurants found in Japanese subways and side streets. Hosokawa is very highly regarded in the local Japanese community which really says it all.
ARB
Had an amazing dinner- even managed to satisfy a picky friend who doesn't eat seafood. Had almost every vegetable, chicken and cooked meat dish available and it was all fantastic- made better by the sweet plum wine which we still talk about. There are several more pages to the menu from the photo available. Service was good, small comfortable place for a couple of friends. Good service, communication issue regarding the alcohol percentage of the wine which we (including wait staff) laughed about once we all understood each other.
AKAI
The best. It's the best Japanese restaurant in Brisbane so far!!! The chirashi is my favourite!!!
AdmCan
The sushi here was absolutely disgusting!! All the cuts had inedible pieces of connective tissue. Very disappointed.
Alex
Terrible. Sashimi was average. Shabu shabu was awful - the meat was dreadful, the vegetables ordinary. Far too expensive when Sono is just down the road. Of course the icing on the cake was the 1hr time frame in which to sit, order & eat. I would have appreciated it more if they said it wasn't realistic to have the shabu shabu in this time, instead of rushing the order through (plus our cooker was running out of gas - not that there was time or service enough to even mention it to the staff). Even better was when the next guests arrived and the staff indicated that we were just finishing up, and left said guests standing behind us breathing down our necks.
I would not wish this experience on anyone.
Poor in all aspects, from food to service.
Johnny Alexander Loving
Just have to say, AMAZING. I have to leave it at that, couldn't type any more if I wanted too.
Marcus
Bad Service. I have been going visiting Hosokawa Japanese Restaurant for about 2 years, and lately their service WHAT service, Rude, I asked for the bill and the waitress waved her hand at me. Are you kidding write. Look if you don't mind this crap than go and enjoy.
Elle
Excellent food. Sensational food, great service and Japanese owned and run. Proud family with pride in their culture.
TED C
Loved it, would go back, authentic japanese, good prices, friendly staff. Japanese owned and operated.
TMD
Fourth time unlucky. Been here 3 times previously which were all perfectly fresh sashimi on the chirashi rice, hence the revisits.
But today's visit was just dissappointing with the salmon lacking freshness. Although it didn't smell foul but the texture was just weird and unpleasant, almost dissolved into a watery powder, mushy texture after a few bites, lacking the usual firmness and rich taste u expect from a fresh fish. All other fish seemed fine though, standout were the hokkaido scallop.
Nigel Poynter
Great family dinner. Shared the sushi and sashimi platters between four - very good with fresh, tasty produce. Also had a couple of the main dishes - the unagi (eel) was particularly good. Brought our own wine (corkage $7). Overall impression - very good (quality and price), efficient, unpretentious. Very happy to recommend and look forward to visiting again.
Tanya
Amazing sashimi. Went there for lunch once. Had the mixed sashimi plate. The tuna was so amazing, I ordered a bowl of tuna sashimi alone. Fabulous.

The next time I went back, I think the tuna was not so fresh. Still good, but not as blood red as the first time.

Their gyoza is to die for.
Luv2eat
Guaranteed fresh sashimi. This is one of my favourite restaurants. The waitresses are very polite and the food (more so the sashimi) is always fresh and delicious. If you need a japanese food fix, this is the place to go! :-D
Tam
Fresh, delicious.. Really enjoyed the sashimi- the "small" is huge and can feed two people easily! Agadashi tofu was also delicious. Uzaku salad was good, but the eel was quite rich which I'm not such a fan of. Service was excellent, very busy so definitely book a table (even at lunch! In the rain!).
Their menu is available on their facebook page as well so you can scope out your choices before you get there!
Bexsta16
Best Sashimi I have had in a long time!! I recommend booking a table too no matter what time because it's so popular!! Love it ;-)
Chad Glover
Great Japanese food at a really reasonae price considering some of the exhaberant prices alloy of Brisbane Japanese restaurants charge. Good service and nice atmosphere. Will definetly return.
Landish
Simply wonderful!. I have been to Hosokawa twice. Both times had great experience. The food is very delicious and good value. The miso eggplant dish was amazing! Sashimi was very fresh. Pork Belly was tender and tasty. Some of the best Japanese food in town. Will be back!
Alf Burmeister
Tastes okay, below average quality sushi and cooked food. Its quality reflects the prices charged. Busy but food was served pretty quick.
Laura Dickson
Love this place! Food is super fresh and reasonably priced. Restaurant was fully booked when we were there on a tuesday night so probably best to book ahead
Erica Jang
Genuine Japanese sashimi:) If u are interested in trying authentic sashimi, start with a tuna either a salmon. U will love them!!
Minamiy
Yummmmm. First time I ate there on last Friday. It was recommended by friend. My bf and I ordered Sashimi plate small. It came with many kinds of sashimi. It was great. Then we had gyoza, nasu dengaku and chicken karaage. I thought everything was very authentic. I am a Japanese by the way. I have been almost all Jap restaurant in Brisbane. This restaurant was small and so busy. However food came in fast enough. We definitely go back there for another round!
As48916
Cheap quality. The portions are huge and very cheap. The sushi is the best of it. Awesome. We ordered too much because the prices were so low we thought the portions must be tiny. Went there every Friday night for 7 months but after getting our order wrong 4 times in a row and always delivering my son's California rolls so late everyone else had completely finished, we are heading back to our old haunt. We'll get over it. Rainbow roll excellent.
Lisa M
Great food with cheap price. Love sashimi and after been to Japan few times I really have a high standard for Japanese cuisine . Hosokawa is the place I would like to go every week, not fancy but comfy. Fresh and great value sashimi platter. Love the atmosphere feels like Im In Japan again!!
Stuart
As far as I am aware, there are three places in Brisbane where you can get top quality sashimi. Of those three, Hosokawa is possibly the best and definitely the cheapest. It is also better than average in the Japanese casual dining category.
Melly
Fresh and Delicious!. Dined at Hosakawa on Saturday night with a group of 7 for a birthday dinner. The restaurant was extremely busy and the staff had to constantly turn away customers that were hoping to get a table without a booking.

There was a group of Japanese men having dinner when we arrived which a sign that the food must be good.

The food was delicious and fresh. While the dishes cost considerably less than what you would pay at Sono just up the road, I did think some of the portion sizes were quite small for the price.

The staff were friendly and very accommodating when it came to bringing out the birthday cake we brought along - $1 cakage per person.

Overall was a great night with delicious food. Will definitely be back!
NLJ
Ordered the sashimi platter for lunch. The slices were so thick the dish was unpleasant and inedible. Still made me pay full price even after complaining. Will never go back and would not recommend
Lee
Lunch. Ordered sashimi and sushi lunch specials - the fish was cut so thick you needed a knife n fork to cut it! Terrible service and after not eating a single thing on either plate they still made us pay $46 - will not be going back - so dissapointed!
Bobby
Surprise. Some rules for dining in Brisbane, avoid mexican, amercian and sushi. Why? the chefs here have no idea what they are doing. pet hate, canned tuna in a sushi roll YUCK!

Foraging for food and stumbled upon this restaurant, crowded and smiling patrons. Good sign. I was craving sushi and asked "is the tuna raw?" what a silly question - the Japanese waitress must have been thinking. No worries here, I really enjoyed my sushi and jasmine tea. The icecream next door was a great finish to the meal, perfect!
Food Searching
Fully booked is a good indication. Arrived without a booking to a booked out venue but they squeezed me. prices typical for japanese food with nice indoor and outdoor seating. unfortunately sashimi was marginally fresh and pieces were much too thick. i do commend the scallop sashimi for being on the contrary. if you like a bbq then definately try the yakitori here with a bit of rice. as for the agedashi tofu and ozaku, alright but nothing to rave on about. book in advance to save disapointed as this seems to be the talk of the town. would i return? yes. recommend? yes. the experience 7/10
Flauteklautz
Good food decent price~. Food was really good...especially the Agedashi Tofu..goes well with a bowl of hot white rice !
Sashimi slices were generous in sizess!
Defnitely coming back for some good Japanese food!
8mile
Not kids friendly. Good quarity sushi and sashimi..but their service is pretty bad. Especially waitresses are pretty friendly to only VIP customers. Maybe it's too Japanese style? They also aren't kids friendly. Thay don't even have high chairs stuff. If you take your kids there, you will be pretty dissapointed.
M
Sashimi was not all entirely fresh and the waitress argued with me saying it was fresh. Manager came out and admitted it wasn't fresh with no apology. Chef came out to apologise. Did not get a replacement for fresh fish or discount in lieu of stinky non sashimi grade fish. Disappointing customer service and will not be back!
TC
Must visit. Akio Hosokawa, a native of Hokkaido which fresh produce is key to good table fare, hass been on the Brisbane restaurant scene for 30 years. from Oshin onwards his talent has been on display for a long time. Beautifully fresh seafood, generous poritons and crafted presentation are his trademark.
Penny
Very rude manager and they forgot one of our meals.
Bon
Very nice, but pricy. Very nice. But I feel ripped off as is is about 30-40% more than the same food in japan.
Dolphin
The worst experience i had. We went there to celebrate my boy friend's birthday, we ordered sashimi, grill eel, deep fried osyter and hop pot udon The first three dishes came very fast but the hot pot udon not, we were not very happy with that because we waited for the hot pot udon for 40 mins.
Brizzz
Not too bad. I went here with my partner for dinner. The restaurant itself is very beautiful and well set out. The staff are friendly, attentive and quick to tend to your order. Our meals were also served very quickly.

The food itself was good, but not great. For $18, I expected slightly more on the small sushi platter. It is more of a gourmet sushi platter I guess, which is why the price was so high. The other dishes we had were also on the small side, so for the price, I would expect a little more.

All in all, we probably won't go again, but it is a nice restaurant for a one-off.
Gordon Ramsay
Amazing!. What great fresh and tasy Japanese food! So authentic and quality is amazing. Best in Brisbane!
Emma
Will come back again!. I tried Kaisen chirashi sushi. Just amazing !! Good potion, great presentation, so fresh and lovely staff await you.
will come back and will try shoukadou bento!!
Kewlaurel
Reasonably priced, excellent quality Japanese food. All the dishes we ordered were all very good. We ordered: agedashi tofu, miso eggplant, egg omelette, mixed tempura, grilled eel, pork belly, large sashimi platter, prawn tempura sushi and a vegetarian sushi, and 4 bowls of rice. This was plenty for 6 people! The EXCEPTIONAL dishes were: the miso eggplant, egg omelette, agedashi tofu, grilled eel and the large sashimi platter. All had great flavors and the sashimi was just so fresh and was almost...crunchy with freshness! Prices were also very reasonable. Cannot WAIT to come back here again! P.s the gelato place next door is also very good!
Dotcatdot
My husband I love to go here. The food is delicious and so fresh, the service is always with a smile and the price very reasonable. Hosokawa is my favourite japanese in brisbane
Manup
This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Brisbane. Great flavours. Fresh. Amazing gyoza.
Cvtully1
Great Japanese on Racecourse Rd. Good service and the food is always great. Nice fresh produce and gives you the feel that you are in one of the small restaurants in Tokyo. Have been half a dozen times now and we always come away impressed.
Price is right aswell.
Anthony Turner
Excellent in all aspects. After living in Japan for so long, I can easily say that this place is spot on when it comes to getting it right. If most of the clientele are Japanese, thats your first clue. The chef and owner has been around the block with other restaurants and ventures that allude to good, solid, well prepared Japanese cuisine, but has done us all a massive favour by opening his own in Hosokawa. Yes, it may lack all the cultural trappings of say Little Tokyo, and the decor and $$ of Sono, but what is the focus here? If you want a jade buddha experience, well go there instead. Hosokawa reminds me of so many of the small and local izakayas you find in any Japanese neighborhood, and in my opinion, this is a winning formula not lost on everyone. The food is the best out there by a long shot.
David Hanlin
This is the place for fresh Japanese food with great taste, a little more formal! Great value sized meals and bento selection.

What a great place!. Delicious authentic Japanese food at a great price. Especially loved the eggplant with miso which we had not tried before and the sashimi platter was amazing value. Green tea ice cream with red beans also a nice end to a great meal.. very impressive fast friendly service.

Great food Great Price. I love Japanese food, and this petite little restaurant does it right. Good food, good service at a very good price. I haven't been there for dinner yet, but lunched on several times and have always been impressed.

Good food. Everything about this place reminds me of the restaurants they have in Japan. The food is simple yet very nice. My partner and I had some Sashimi, Sushi a couple of small dishes. Sashimi was excellent, both the cut and quality. Sushi was very simple but very good, just like in Japan. We also had a udon soup dish. The flavours were strong but not overpowering. The staff were genuinely warm and friendly. It was quite busy when we went but food arrived promptly and was well presented.

It was the simplicity of the place that we liked but that might also be the reason some may not like it. The menu does not offer as much variety as other places.

I have been to many Japanese restaurants and Japan itself. I would recommend this place.

Disappointing. After such a good review in The Australian I was looking forward to this. The sushi was ok, as was the gyoza. The teriyaki chicken was very average, and very late.. Portside sono is miles ahead of this place. Not worth the money and the ambience is more flouro than zen.

Local quick bite. I went to Hosokawa to see what it was all about last week. Nothing like some of the stunning Japanese restaurants in Brisbane but good for a quick fix. The staff were friendly and decor clean and simple. After looking through the menu we ordered a selection of dishes from sushi to chicken teriyaki. It was delivered fairly quickly to the table and all the food was of a standard you would expect from a local restaurant but nothing flash considering the prices weren't that cheap. The chef was out the front at the sushi bar and said hello. I thought he was from Sono but apparently was there over 10 years ago so unsure of where he has come from but was sweet.
All in all Hosokawa was good for a quick meal with friendly staff - may not be somewhere you go often but good to check out.

Authentic and cheap but oh so tasty!. This is a brand new restaurant - it only opened Tuesday 25-May - but make sure you call ahead to make a reservation if you'd like an inside table. The atmosphere reminds me of similar restaurants in Japan and they have even managed to squeeze a sushi bar inside where you can watch the chef prepare the sushi and sashimi! We had a number of smaller dishes between 2 and drinks and still came out full, and only $40 lighter. 2 enthusiastic thumbs up! I think we'll definitely be regulars.

Overall, we think that this place is most value-for-money if you consume sashimi because each slice is thick and is served in a generous portion!
The other dishes aren’t too bad as well.
Service is also good and prompt.

...most Japanese restaurants, they do amazing lunch specials so its so much cheaper than dinner. Even when its cheaper, the quality is still the same which is another bonus!

Throughout our whole dinner, tables were being turned over quite often. First up was the simmered pork belly. The pieces were quite large, but not many pieces. My friend who had been here before noted that it was quite dry compared to previous times. To be honest, this was the most forgettable dish of the evening. Luckily, it was only to get better. Our large sashimi platter had me salivating the moment it arrived. Large slices of tuna

Hosokawa Japanese restaurant in Hamilton, along Racecourse road does its justice for traditional Japanese food, however, it may be hard to find street parking or you even may miss the place when you drive past. Do book before you come because sometimes, they may easily be fully booked even if sometimes you do see empty tables around. The restaurant is not as big as I thought it would be, with both indoor and outdoor seatings available. A wide range of Japanese dishes were offered, there were also lunch specials that were available. We decided to try two of their lunch specials and one of their sashimi sets.

It's a small cosy restaurant with minimalist decor, serving very traditional Japanese dishes. We started off with some starters. Edamame - boiled soybeans $5.00 For some reason I really like Edamame, I don't think it's actually the taste that I like but more the fun action of squeezing the beans out of the salty casing =) They were still warm which was a bonus, unlike some places which preboil them so they're cold when served to you. Next came the Agedashi Tofu - deep fried tofu in broth $8.00 It came in a bit too much broth for my liking, especially 'cause it was quit

Despite the bone and disorganised service, they serve well made sushi – more sophisticated than other places I have tried in Brisbane of late.

The taste of the food was undoubtedly delicious, whether it was the sweet broth of the nabeyaki udon, the unique flavour of sea urchin or the simple crispy dried seaweed wrapped around sushi rice.

When craving for good Japanese food in Brisbane with a reasonable price, Hosokawa Japanese Restaurant at Racecourse road is place you need to go. It was a Saturday night and pouring with rain when we decided to go for a visit. We weren't sure if we needed to have a booking at Hosokawa so we turned up confidently. However, we were nearly turned away as the restaurant was fully booked for the night. Lucky, I spotted a couple at the sushi bar that had just finished and about to walk to counter to pay for their bill. After waiting a few minutes, we were given the seats right in front of the Sushi bar and ready for our Japanese feast night. Going through the menu, it prominently features Sushi, Sashimi and Nigiri - very traditional Japanese cuisines. We decided to go with a Sushi platter , Tempura Udon and Grilled eggplant . While waiting for the food to arrive, we started talking Akio Hosokawa - the Chef at the Sushi bar, who we later found out is also the owner of the Restaurant. Akio had

Generous fresh portions of salmon, tuna, hamachi, squid and scallops. While I was happy with the portion, with any platter I expect a larger variety and a surprise or two which we didn't find.

Certainly no complaints about the made-to-order sushi rolls, which were fresh, moist and delicious. And definitely no complaints about the nasu dengaku.

Needless to say, I loved Hosokawa! All the dishes were good but the sashimi was exceptional. It was definitely of a higher grade of produce than what is normally seen in Japanese restaurants. The service was so friendly and I truly enjoyed seeing the sashimi chef at work.

Hosokawa is my new favourite Japanese restaurant in Brisbane! Recently opened in May 2010 on Racecourse Road , this little gem has already attracted lots of local Japanese diners. Hosokawa is situated next to the popular Milany Gelato , it has a Sushi Bar

Hailing from a suburban west side upbringing, even just mentioning I had dins at Racecourse Rd on a school night makes me cool by association. The idea was to have achieve the near impossible- go out for a midweek meal that’s tasty and yet healthy without
