Review The Charming Squire - Brisbane

Deboo Chatterjee
Warm & welcoming. Beautiful location. The guy who served us - Harry, he’s a wonderful & knowledgeable host. Probably coz of him, we had a wonderful experience. The beer taster is worth trying. It gave us a good idea about what different kind of beers they make. The live music was nice too. Would surely visit once again.

Awesome venue with live music and great service. Upstairs, elevated, bar and outdoor tables with stylish industrial wood finishes. The bar is stocked well with beers on tap, wine, cider, spirits and excellent cocktails. The food was delicious and came out quickly considering how busy it was. Fills up very quick on Fri & Sat nights so get in before 6:30-7:30 if you want a table.

We stopped in for a drink and some snacks before a show. The roast potatoes were wet oily potatoes with a boiled texture. I asked the server if he could take them back for some time in the oven. He never returned, or offered a refund. Calamari was OK, and somehow the drinks came out after the food...

Fabulous atmosphere to share with friends in the Embers Restaurant dining booths. The food was amazing and the service was great.

Nice spot, good was good, order was mucked up which wasn't great because my wife is super fussy about her food. Would have been nice if them to open up the upstairs bar, as going up and down stairs for drinks is highly inconvenient!

Came in for a few beers with mates, great location and quite spacious, beers are alright but nothing spectacular

Really bad, Either understaffed or just bad. Had a please wait at the door waited 15min . Tibor the manager (i guess) said sit wherever like we had not followed the instructions Just tables and tables of dirty plates cups. Drinks ordered (online menu) took 35mins. Line for food was long Food came out cold... then was reserved with new chips. I could only hear the food staff say sorry about that. Felt bad. This reminds me of high prices for no service

Great restaurant. Food is excellent. Staff are very helpful. Atmosphere was so enjoyable, oh, and great choices of beer 👌 👏

The food was very average. If you’re not coming for the beverages, don’t bother!

We came here with a large group of people and one of us ordered the Tomahawk steak. While devouring the food, there was a small caterpillar or green bug that was on the leafy greens of the same plate (of the steak) ALIVE. We told the waitress but she proceeded to say “at least you know its fresh” and she would inform the chef. For a popular restaurant you would think we would be compensated with a free side or at least dispose of the caterpillar and give us a new plate. But we did not hear from her afterwards. Overall the steak itself was good but the service could be improved.

I asked for a $95 bottle of bubbles that ‘wasn’t delivered this week’. I had to fork out for the upgrade - won’t be going back. Manager abrupt and rude about it. A normal place would automatically give you the upgrade for return patronage. Won’t be returning for this reason.

Went there for dinner tonight and was unimpressed with the service received by the waiter Daniel. Felt discriminated against, gave us attitude and could wait to get us out of there. Food was lovely, but wouldn’t return asked on the service received. We are from Melbourne, and have been to others squire loft restaurant. This one does not live up to their name.

if you like spending exorbitant amounts of money on james squire beer, drink here, otherwise, there's always the plough inn, if i ever bother eating here (i've heard it's good, but very expensive, much like the drinks) then i'll update my review, until then, as a watering hole, i'd give it a miss.

So we’ve been to the Charming Squire quite a few times – as a Brissy local, who hasn’t really? This place is consistently packed – we walk our pooch past here during the week and it’s always pumping.<br/><br/>I’ve had numerous work functions here, all have been fantastic from start to finish. Great beer, great food, great atmosphere.<br/><br/>We recently (March 2019) headed here for a late Sunday lunch from the Bar Menu and unfortunately it was average. The buns for the burgers were all a bit stale and we were rather disappointed we couldn’t order pizza before 5pm - everyone loves pizza and beer! <br/><br/>In saying that, the times we have come here for a pre-show meal in the dining room the food has been fantastic. Great wine selection too!<br/><br/>OUR TIP: Skip the bar menu and eat in the restaurant – you will be impressed with the quality. Be sure to make a booking, particularly if there's a popular show on at QPAC. Also don’t overlook the Iron Bark Coal Pit offerings – they are delicious!

Food and beer is okay. But service needs huge improvement. Food takes over 45 minutes and the line to order food is big. Does not hurt having a better service for food. A simple way of fixing that would be someone looking at tables and taking orders from tables.

The charming squire is an awesome venue to go grab some drinks with friends. Live music makes this venue so much better.<br/><br/>As far as the food goes I think it fairly average and overpriced but this is a good spot to go grab drinks and listen to live music

Came here for pre-dinner drinks with work colleagues on a work trip, before heading to Ahmets Turkish (also in SouthBank). Monday night, and there was live music going on, so that was a plus. The downside was it was too loud to be able to chat with people, so we had to head outside, but them were under smoke barrage. Pity.<br/><br/>Drinks were displayed in an interesting way, showing the type of the drink from its characteristics and flavour profile, plus Alcohol content, very nicely done. I got a glass of the Swindler, first time having that one (I've had other James Squire brews before), and I quite liked it. Reasonable size for the price.<br/><br/>I can't give it more stars because of the overbearing loudness of the performer and the smoke situation, plus, didn't get a chance to check out any food either. Perhaps next time.

I'm not a massive beer fan, I'm usually always visiting places for the food options.<br/><br/>Charming Squire always is buzzing with a large crowd which makes it interesting getting a spot in the beer garden area.<br/>This was the case when we visited and were sat in the restaurant. The restaurant is equally as nice, and on a hot spring day it was a winner for us.<br/><br/>The menu options were 10/10. I was expecting to pay a premium at this venue but was delightfully surprised that that was not the case!<br/><br/>Meals are brought out in a decent time and are exceptionally large and would pair quite well with the beverage selections.

Charming Squire turns a spin on a typical pub meal and makes worth coming back for! You will pay for the extra 'fanciness' but it's well worth it. Service was polite and quick, meals were perfect portions and great quality, beers had lots of flavour and very fresh, and the atmosphere was relaxing as a live band played in the main bar area - loud enough to hear it but not so loud you couldnt have a conversation.

A wonderful place to visit on a early Sunday evening during my recent trip to Brisbane. Met a school friend who is settled in Melbourne and visited the South Park area.<br/><br/>I wanted to try their craft beer and settled for the 4 Wives Pilsener , comfortably seated.<br/><br/>It was almost a full house and entertaining music  played by a three man band.

Came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. We ordered the baked camembert to share, it was amazing. Got three different breads to dip in and tasted so yummy. I ordered the scallops as a main with a side of coal roasted carrot and broccolini. All three dishes were incredible. The carrot was crispy and the broccolini and goat cheese went so well together. The scallops were fantastic. They had mashed potato, raisins and pickled elements and they all paired together so well. Such amazing meals and great service. Highly recommend coming here!!

I'm sorry but easily one of the worst places 'steak wise' I have ever eaten at. I wish i could give it zero stars as one star is too much. Their rib eye is very very poor quality cut and more like a skirt then rib. Place is overpriced for what it offers and hardly a good one to eat.
Liz Bennett
The security staff are pigs, I would never go there.<br/><br/><br/><br/>Please give this place a miss.<br/><br/><br/>The Management need to step up.<br/><br/><br/>There is a video going around, showing the security guards discriminating a customer.<br/><br/><br/>

This review is for THE BREWERS PANTRY which is a small cafe connected to The Charming Squire, who I HAVE NO complaint about, just to be clear....stopped in for a morning coffee before a seminar at the Convention centre, two young ladies and a young guy behind the counter, the guy was of very average height and build with the classic hipster 'man bun' and was giving the girls all kinds of annoying banter, they didn't seem to be enjoying it very much. Ordered my coffee and cake through  Mr Man bun, who certainly had an attitude and hardly grunted at me. If you don't like serving people maybe change your job? Try smiling and saying hello to people at least.
The Grinches
Had 3 early morning work breakfast meetings and a dinner here and they were very accommodating and the staff were great. The breakfasts were some of the best I’ve had and also the best our international guests have had. <br/>Thanks to Amy and Dusty Dan !!!
Tuba Media Productions
What a beautiful hemisphere restaurant that we came here for a quick dinner before go to QPAC for concert last Sunday night. Very friendly service and food is spot on. Open kitchen and dining area are divided by bar/fine area which is very likable. Can have a quiet dinner at fine dining area than catch a drink at bar area with live concert on.<br/><br/>Would like to go back again to try their pizza. It looks so tasty.<br/><br/>Highly recommended.

Hipster bartender pissed off 100 people in my group by having an attitude.<br/>Next day of a 3 day conference when someone asked if should go back the quote was "I'd rather give another place our money."<br/><br/>
Tom Maguire
Food ok but service is terrible. No concept of time even though you tell them you are going to a show. 25 min wait for an ice cream for a kids meal. Unless you have all day don't bother. $16 kids meals that are tiny and half doesn't show up
Jasen Anderson
A meal and some pre-show drinks at the Charming Squire and you can't go wrong. Appeals to a wide variety of modern Australian tastes and has the beer and wine choice to go with it. The service is good with friendly and attentive staff too which makes the experience worth while. A regular favourite.
Claire Loves Food
Food less than average- had the croquettes (slow cooked beef) tasted like beef mince from a pie?! Overcooked and too small for croquettes. Pork sliders also disappointing- more like coleslaw slider, couldn't taste the pork at all and was similar to that from a packet. Service also lacked professionalism- very rude and unhelpful. Drinks always to a high standard but definitely need to improve both menu execution and hospitality. Will not be returning anytime soon!

The very RUDE Squire. <br/><br/> I went to the Charming Squire with a group of friends who are all aged 40 - 50 yrs old. We had a couple of drinks at a previous venue and went to The Charming Squire around 8pm. After having 2 drinks, we went to the bar at just before 9pm to order a 3rd drink. As my male friend got half way through ordering, the security man to the right of the bar told the barwoman not to serve him with his order but the rest of the group could have their drinks. When I queried why he wasn't allowed to order himself a drink, the security said 'he's had too much' but couldn't elaborate on why he thought that. We were taken aback by his response as my friend was a quiet, sober man and we had all drank the same amount. No one was being loud, arrogant or annoying. My friend took it on the chin, didn't argue the verdict as they would then be justified and throw him out for being confrontational. He drank water for the next 2 hours so we could stay in the venue. As we left, we went to air our complaint to the manager that security need to be able to justify their refusal to serve alcohol with evidence of what the customer has done wrong. He was extremely rude and denied that security could have made the wrong call. He was not willing to even listen that customers have a right to complain being very dismissive, so we mentioned that Trip Advisor may be the best place to complain and be listened to if he wasn't going to. He then swore and told us to leave. So he was bothered about getting a bad review publicly and that he thought it was unjust, but couldn't be bothered to deal with customers respectfully when a complaint is made in person when we thought they were being unjust. What a disappointing night that was meant to be a celebration for us. 'The Rude Squire' is a far more appropriate name. The next time we're out (which isn't often) we will definitely keep walking onto the next venue to somewhere that values and respects good customers.

We had our Xmas party there Saturday 25.11.17 with around 14 people in attendance.  The beer selection was excellent, cocktails varied and well prepared, food (sliders/oysters/chicken wings/rib fillet) all well presented and tasty. The staff were courteous, efficient, and attentive. The general decor upmarket pub and the venue itself warm and welcoming in my opinion. Would heartily recommend

Nice decor, not that we could enjoy much of it- the place was packed. Queuing for food and drinks was a nightmare, and prices are a tad on the high side. However, when the food arrived it was fresh and tasty ( pumpkin and goats'cheese pizza was divine!) Orders came out strangely- some of us had finished eating while other meals hadn't arrived. Some meals didn't even arrive before we had to leave to make it to QPAC, although they did raincheck these meals for our return several hours later. All the grumbles can be put down to the sheer volume of customers. Would come back perhaps early in the week next time.

I had been wanting to try here for ages, as it's always packed & I love a good burger.<br/>So Mum had a drink while I had early dinner before the ballet - and was disappointed enough to not want to return.<br/>The chips were cold on arrival, and from the frozen-ish in the middle, tasted like supermarket frozen chips which hadn't been cooked properly.<br/>My beef brisket burger was also lukewarm, and was only a tiny amount of the Mac & cheese listed, so little I thought it had been missed. The flavours were nice & it probably would have been enjoyable if hot.<br/>Maybe you can't expect much service from a pub, but this was poor too & with so many great places in Bris, I won't be choosing here again.
Alex
Very average food. Had food poisoning which I suspect was from eating here. Service was also pretty average, took 15 minutes for a beer to arrive. Won't be back.

My friends and I went to this place looking for a quick bite and a drink after a show last night and it was pretty good. The atmosphere was comfortable even if the design was a little odd and we were quickly served our drinks and snacks. I ordered an espresso martini ($18) randomly because the usual wine and beer there didn't interest me and it was just a quickly thrown together bottled one that was plenty sweet. The chips were softer than I prefer but still great when you're hungry and the aioli was good. There was also a live performer playing and she added a good vibe to the place.
Bman
Poor service. Staff misled me twice and wasted 15 minutes. Tables were dirty, no one bothered to clean the table or offer any cutlery. Took more than 25 minutes to serve the food.<br/>Waffle chicken burger was disgusting. Waffle and South style fried chicken were not fresh. On the contrary, pizza was above average. <br/>It seems all the restaurants on Grey street serves ordinary and expensive food. <br/>
Canuck In Oz
I stopped at The Brewer's Pantry add it wasn't too busy and is planned it for a while. The welcome was less than welcoming with a crude "what can I get you mate?" reminiscent of a outback watering hole.<br/><br/>I ordered the beef brisket burger that came with less than ordinary fries. The burger itself was tasty, tender, and fresh.<br/><br/>What really let this place down was the service. Cutlery - get your own. Serviettes - steal them from a nearby table. Hand wipes after a juicy drippy burger - nonexistent.

Awesome food , beer and live music. There on Tuesday night ! What a relaxing evening it was... Loved the ambience . Opp the Brisbane wheel!!

Sunday marked our last weekend before we’re off to Queenstown. So of course we started the lazy afternoon at the ever central The Charming Squire. Between the two of us we’ve probably been there 5 different times because it really is a great locale for all sorts of get together. Business lunches, birthday celebrations, intimate dinners have all been spent in different parts of the micro brewery/gastro pub.

Despite being fairly busy, the service was quick and polite. Their Fever Tree Ginger Beer was the best non-alcoholic ginger beer I've had. Goat ragu was delicious however I felt the portion size was a little small (considering the size of the plate and the cost). Would, however, still return here.
Mick
Went there for a wood fired steak in which I happily paid for and got a grilled steak. After asking why it wasn't wood fired we were told that it's not on Mondays. <br/>Got chicken wings which were supposed to come with Quinoa. Got no Quinoa and when asked where's the Quinoa I was told that they must of run out so they sprinkled sesame seeds instead. <br/>Must mate got a $40 porterhouse also should of been woosfired but wasn't. not only that, being a chef it was the worst and cheapest porterhouse he has ever had. <br/>After complaining, the manager was very nice to Offering another meal at no charge. <br/>I won't be going back as I was looking forward to a nice woosfired steak.

Arranged a breakfast meeting here thinking it would be easy only to find it they only serve breakfast outside. Now need to spent 1 hour at 13C with no coat :(
Jaded Belle
Overrated and over priced like most of Southbank. The dory and chips were very bland and not worth the $28. The sticky date pudding was good but not $15 worth. When i asked for a spoon for my dessert the waitress looked at me like i'd asked her for her first born child. Won't be going back, won't be recommending.
Mr Scotch
It's pretty ordinary.<br/>Service is bland, the restaurant for a Saturday lunch had no atmosphere. Half the menu isn't available for lunch (anything on the coals).<br/><br/>The brisket burger we had was inedible. Dry, gross Brisket.<br/>Some kind of Mac and Cheese bun. Just an absolute failure.<br/>You'd get much better at the markets for 1/5th the price.<br/><br/>Could be really good, but it isn't.. For such a huge space, it's likely to be hemorrhaging money. <br/><br/>
James Canning
Great place with most of the james squire range which never disappoints. Food is on point, i had the pizza and a burger and they were both above average. They were not life changing which is where they lose a point. Will definitely return with friends and have a good afternoon session.

Ooohh would you like some salt with your beer. The American bartender with the ponytail is salty AF!! Very uninviting!! Good beers good venue, but he is a massive buzzkill. It is not the first time we have noticed this!

When you look for good cafes, you generally don't look right next to the station and at a brew house. We took a chance and it was an amazing find. Seriously happy with this place. Avocado on sourdough for me which had delicious labne on the top. It was complimented by a dukkha and tomato salad. Friend 1 had a granola with yogurt. Looked big. Almost too much granola for the yogurt. Friend 2 had poached eggs on toast with bennedict sauce. Huge amount of spinach. Only criticism on this place was that the meals were probably too big. Absolute winner of a place. Coffee was pretty good too. Get there! Brett Atley

Overpriced, they turned off the music 3 hours before closed. Beer was okay but overall complete waste of time. Essentially they tried to close early for their own convenience.
Cino's Mum
Husbandio gets his long awaited birthday wish to dine at the Squire. Being a fan of James Squire brews it's literally like all his birthdays came at once. And not for one second was he (or any of us) disappointed in any way.<br/><br/>We ate in the restaurant & the outlaws really enjoyed the ambience of being able to hear each other talk. At each other. A lot. There was also really good spacing between tables so as not to feel uncomfortably close. Or have anyone else overhear the madness. Meeting Gorden Tallis in the bar area was father-in-law's highlight. Of his life. Seriously. <br/><br/>Meanwhile we LOVED the food & shared:<br/><br/>Cheesy garlic bread | mushroom & truffle arancini | slow cooked beef croquettes | baked camembert | saute of spiced calamari | Terranora wagyu beef.<br/><br/>The arancini was a highlight - crisp coating around a treasure trove of primo risotto goodness, elevated by truffled shroom sauce & a hint of citrus. Also notable was the wagyu beef from the iron bark coal pit which surprisingly suited all our palates. Hints of delicious smoke with each bite & slow cooked to perfection. Both the horseradish cream & jus were ace. Included with the wagyu was one side dish & we couldn't get enough of the salad we chose - pickled fennel, orange, dill, kalamata olive, cucumber, watercress.<br/>The only meal which didn't excite was the baked camembert, although the warm house-baked breads with it were stellar. <br/><br/>Really enjoyed the friendly interaction with our waitress/enabler who kept the JS amber ale & pear cider flowing. Also...Devil's Lair Chardonnay ON TAP. <br/><br/>Yummo!<br/><br/>This is gastropub food with finesse. A perfect pit stop before a QPAC show. Or frankly anytime. <br/><br/>Definitely charmed by the Squire 👍

Was here for mid afternoon drinks. No other customers were there when we got around so had the whole place to ourselves. Ordered some drinks and got some snacks as well. The service was quick and friendly. The food was actually quite good and the prices were reasonable for a place in the city. Although the doors were all open it was cool and airy inside the restaurant. A good, comfortable place to hang out on a weekend with some friends.

Best experience I have ever had. Highly recommend to everyone. Great service and good. Friendly staff and would be great to take friends to. ...................

This is a tale of two dining experiences. One features five-star flavours from the Brewer's Pantry menu. I'll confidently stand behind the mushroom arancini balls, slow cooked beef croquettes and baked Camembert. That's a premium feed right there. My other visit here? Not so great. As you can imagine, after that initial experience, I was pretty excited we were having our work Christmas party at the venue. More of the same! Right? Wrong. The function food and service was dismal. Most of the dishes came out late and/or cold. Flavour had taken an unexpected RDO on this evening. And the service was putrid, with the gross bar dudes the main offenders. Rude if you were a guy, sleazy if you were a girl, and just disinterested overall. I don't know what to believe anymore!
J_cinta
We definitely charmed by these guys. It was my favourite place to eat at on my trip to Brissy. We had the mac & cheese which was flavourful, golden and cheesey crisp on the top - yum! We had the marinated warm olives so beautiful i could eat them by the jar full! And the truffled mushroom arancini balls were just as delicious as i remember my Nonna's being - Golden and crunchy coating with a truffled mushroom puree sauce to dip them in.. all so very delicious! Loved the relaxed atmosphere and service too. Thanks a bunch guys!

We had a wonderful dinner in the charming squire. The pizzas were great. The mushroom and truffle pizza was a bit too salty, but nevertheless, the flavours of the pizza were really strong. We relished ever piece of it. The crust could afford to be a little thinner, but it was still great. We also ordered the grand bazaar lamb burger and chicken & avo salad. Both dishes were delicious in their own right. I'd highly recommend a visit here.
Sepp
The fish and chips were not bad, but also not worth $28. Slightly soggy, but tasty. Serving staff was friendly but a tad incompetent and the ordering system where you have to order food and beer seperately is strange.
Haych77
Waited over 20mins for our waiter to come back and take our drinks and main meal order after taking our entree order. Had to go and ask the maitre D where our waiter was.<br/>Ordered medium rare sirloin steak and moreton bay bugs, both were over cooked. Steak tasted like charcoal as it was obviously char grilled on an unclean grill. Did not finish our meals and left. <br/>Received a 10% discount for the poor quality meals.<br/>Pub like atmosphere and vibe with expensive restaurant prices. First and last visit for us!
Krishna Brannigan
A group of us liked the idea of this place so close to the conference centre and during the day I'd seen a whole pig roasted over coals. As I could not get that out of my mind all day I've steered everyone here. Great beer on tap, live music, generous pizzas and great sides. Hit the spot and with everyone talking turns ordering food and beer an economical night out $80.
Rebecca
An interesting and extensive menu. The chicken wings were milder than I thought and not at all hot like described but still a good flavour, the fennel salad was very tasty and the banoffee pie dessert was a masterpiece
Satiety Society
We came here after a show for a drink and some bar food. There was a musician playing in the bar area but we found some tables in the next section which were surprisingly quiet. We had the Arancini which came served on a bed of dip (possibly baba ghanoush). It was delicious. The atmosphere was so good I returned for lunch some time later. <br/>On my return visit I ordered fish of the day. The crispy skin was achieved by covering it in salt - way too much salt. It was really very salty but my dining partner enjoyed his gnocchi and the sticky date pudding for dessert was divine.
Mary Broughton
Dreadful experience. The woman who meet us tonight said that there was no room. Very rude, and unacccomodating. Will never go there again...
Kevin Schwass
Perfect for a quick burger & pizza before the theatre. Both were yummy and although a busy Friday night, both arrived quickly. Couldn't have been better.

OVERRATED AND OVERPRICED- Don't waste your time.<br/>Our party had a booking at 8:30pm for a friend's birthday dinner, so we arrived a bit earlier to have some drinks and appetisers at the bar. We were told that the people who had a 6pm booking at our table came AN HOUR LATE, at 7pm! Because of this, we were told the booking would have to be pushed back past 9pm. <br/>  Come 9pm our party went over to the dining area from the bar, and enquired about our booking. After a quick discussion between the staff with some awkward side glances, the staff concluded their conversation and then proceeded to ignore us. It wasn't until we had to go up to a staff member and enquire once more if they were able to proceed with our booking, that we were told "no" and it was not possible.  It was a waste of our time. The customer service was terrible and the food was disappointing. Spend your money somewhere else.
Knick
Always delicious! And I love the beers on tap. Great atmosphere too. I've been 4-5 times and each time has been great. Typically get the bar food, so haven't tried the restaurant area yet.
Wade Gourmet
Went here for dinner and a few drinks. The atmosphere and design of the bar was really suave and sophisticated. A really nice place to bring the lady or to celebrate a birthday ect. A very large range of beers to try straight off the tap that you won't get in most places. I also tried my first espresso martini here which I have now jumped on the band wagon lol. My dinner was really delicious, I ordered a Texas slow cooked steak (so tender and tasty) with corn salsa on top with a side of chips instead of salad. I highly rate this place and I will definitely go back here again sometime soon.
Tastytreat
I've always wanted to go here & I'm glad I did.<br/>High quality, tasty morsals of calamari & delicious pulled pork sliders.<br/>The beer is great. Which I'd expect considering it's a James squire brewery as well.<br/>I tasted quite a few unique beers (jaffa beer??), also a very tasty dark porter.<br/>The food was pretty expensive. I don't baulk too much at high costs (New Farm local), but this seemed pretty expensive.<br/>Nice layout, clean & open.<br/>The staff were absolutely top notch. The young lady who served me (on multiple occasions) could not have been nicer. I like a bartender who makes suggestions & enjoys a brief chat, even though she was busy. Service all around = 5 star.
Bryony
Love the beer and the relaxed atmosphere. Nice food too but often a hefty wait to order and meal to arrive. Perfect time to squeeze in a few more beers.
DianaW
I was strolling at the rear of Southbank & noticed this spot. First thing that grabbed my attention was all the outdoor seating which is a good idea on a cold winter morning out in the sunshine. They do a good breakfast with generous portions. Also the coffee is good Mantle & Moon blend & do not forget those home made muffins sitting on the counter. They are super fresh & really taste like mums just taken them from the oven
SweetRamekin
The Charming Squire has a nice venue setting but is mostly open-plan and as it was so busy, very noisy. We just came for a drink and the selection of all the James Squire range is great, though the prices are somewhat average. The location is a bit out of the usual nightlife area in Southbank, but has a lively atmosphere. A good bar if you're in the area, but not worth going too far out of the way.
Tastes Like Regret
Went here on Monday night! was great to see so many people and live music, good atmosphere. I wanted dessert and cider. Ordered dessert-- sticky date pudding, looked like art, tasted wonderful. The orchard crush cider was tasty and refreshing. Would come here again for the same things.
Julie Bennett
Needing an impromptu snack meal for 10 people before a show with very little time to spare we were delighted to find they could accommodate us happily on an extremely busy Friday night. Staff were friendly and our shared plates arrived within minutes! Food was very good and would highly recommend this venue. Will definitely revisit. Our out-of-town friend were very impressed.
Kate Parrott
Went to the restaurant I The Charming Squire yesterday before the ballet. Was surprised that it was actually quite quiet. The noise from the bar is mostly blocked out. The service was fantastic. They were very attentive, topping up drinks, clearing, bringing out the food promptly. They also knew our preferred leaving time and reminded us so we had time to get to the show. The food was quite good - upscale pub style - I ordered the Goat Ragu and my friend ordered the roast lamb. While we were waiting they also made me up the first nice mocktail I've had since pregnant. We've decided this is our place to go before shows. We will return.
Love Food.
I am a massive fan of the James squires brand and I had such high hopes for the pub. But on three visits last week (we were at a conference upstairs) I was blown away but the woeful service and just how out of control the place was allowed to get. Would not recommend.
Hannah Timms
Had breakfast at the Brewers Pantry, ordered the James Squire Big Breakfast and the Smoked Pulled Pork and Hot sauce Eggs Benedict. Both dishes were stunning. Staff were outstanding. Would 10/10 recommend! Definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu.
Bryce Stroud
Amazing service from male blonde waiter with glasses, some of the best I've ever had in Brisbane. Had spiced calamari, sirloin steak with seasonal vegetables and sticky date pudding. All meals were excellent and very fresh, combined with some pints of jack of spades porter overall a great dining experience. Love this place :)
Kirk Chan
We had two pizzas. A margherita and a ferrara. Both had sufficient cheese and topping. Coupled with 2 x amber ales this was a great meal. Will bring friends next time.
AC
Overpriced, and lacking in appropriate service attitude and quality. Also note that there is a 1.5% surcharge for credit card purchases which is shocking for such a large establishment in South Bank. <br/><br/>Went there at 9pm on a weekday night. Found the service to be disappointing. The bartender was disinterested and rude. When the waitress rocked up to the table with our meals, she introduced my friend's dish and when it came to mine she said, 'I don't even know what this is.'<br/><br/>For $42, I expected a better quality rib fillet but was served a thin steak which was casually layer over the chips. The chips were soggy from all the juice. The steak had obviously not been rested.

I have been looking forward to going to this place for so long because I used to walk past the renovation construction activity every day and the food through the window looks fantastic let alone the look and feel of the whole facility.<br/>Wow, my booking was lost, there were hardly any punters being a Monday night so that was ok, we then didn't get served for about ten minutes (water), then didn't get back for the food and drink order for another fifteen minutes while chatting with the work mate and THEN, after mentioning I was parched we waited all of ten minutes for my one drink to be brought over 35 minutes later......the dinner came out in reasonable time. My mate had the meaty ribs and it was superb, the green beans and kipfler potatoes were divine and my pork was cold, tasted not so fresh although the jus didn't help so I was disappointed. We cant wait to go back for the ambiance and to try better dishes and the drinks menu is fantastic so fingers crossed we get service next time.

I have tried the restaurant twice. The food is good but overpriced. The service was absolutely terribly on both occasions. Staff are unfriendly. For the price of the food there are other places in Brisbane I would prefer to go for a steak or a nice meal. It was like paying Georges or Gambaros prices for a suburban pub meal. I gave it a second chance burn left disappointed both times.

Good was pretty Devine, I would definitely recommend the arancini balls! Fun location, I wasn't expecting we would eat there but it was well worth it! <br/>Wings - tick<br/>Arancini Balls (Mushroom) - tick<br/>Garlic Bread - pretty good, tick <br/>Beef Croquettes- tick 😊<br/>Pork Sliders - tick<br/>Yummy!!!

How this place is only a 3 is still beyond me. This place had amazing pub food and some of the best craft beers on tap in Brisbane. It's always busy, and some of the live acoustic artists that play here are really good.
Tom
Ok so I've had the seafood pizza here (only available after 5pm?) and a few beers recently. I decide to go back and try the restaurant with some colleagues today. The $40 worth of entrees come out (calamari and beef briskets) and there's enough there to half feed the neighbours pigeon. We also ordered the Texan slow cooked steak. I'm expecting beautiful golden crunchy chips and a light salad although the menu slaps me down with a side of roast pumpkin and cherry tomatoes. All good. Except it comes out and the waitress apologises as she dishes it up that it will be served with a side of squash and zucchini that looks like something straight out of a mining camp. The steak has an "ok" BBQ type sauce smeared all over it and it is served on a big-W or target - purchased bread board. I cannot wait to ask for the bill, the waitress suggests coffee or desert, as I'm worried i might get a de-caf and cheesecake when I've ordered a latte and bit of caramel slice. We decline. Never again.

With a different combination of share plates to choose from. It was a nice pub to eat at. Selecting the beef and cheese croquettes, corn cobs and pork ribs, we were very happy with our choices. A nice pear cider helped to wash it down too. The only let down was the price vs serving size. It was a bit unbalanced.

Charming squire does what it does so well. Great range of squires beers on tap, great selection of classic eats to sustain you, and a beautiful location with plenty of space. I specifically note their attention to detail in the decor and the thoughtfulness of sound baffling to reduce the noise. <br/>

It's used to be hard to pick a place to meet overseas guests-not any more.<br/>Charming Squire is located close to the CBD, parking, transport and Southbank Parklands.<br/>It's what the Brits would call a gastro pub- fresh, clean and friendly service. Food offers range from a share plate of fries to a la carte meals. Something for every taste, budget and appetite.<br/>No Gluten Free bread but they happily provided my lunch without the bread. Happy days! <br/>Fully licenced with lots of great beers on tap.<br/>Love it as did our friends- can't wait to go back!!
Absolutely Gr8
Disappointed with the service and meal. I tried the place 3 times so really wanted to give it a chance. Once for drinks in the evening and that worked out ok, if you don't expect more than a pub service. <br/>Venue looks great, contemporary and vibrant; but service is like at a local boozer (for the lack of a better word). Stuff is scruffy (like the service), no style no class. <br/>I went for a lunch twice. Meals are overpriced and minimalistic so you are left hungry and confused - is it a pub wanting to be a classy joint or a classy joint that fails to deliver. <br/>Short of the long: great for drinks only (pub style) but if you have to eat there make sure you have a peanut butter sandwich before.

Went here for lunch today and it was lovely. Seated in the restaurant area where the table and bench seats are so big you feel like midgets sitting at a Giants table. Food was delicious, we all shared plates which included the arancini balls, calamari, croquettes, pork belly and tomato salad ! Really good food and everyone was satisfied ! Service was a little lackluster and slow at points waiting for drinks. But we will definitely be back

We tried the charming squire for a quick dinner before Les Mis. We enjoyed the beers and that's where it stopped. We were embarrassed for the wait staff. Absolutely no training provided to the two staff in the bistro last night. We made the mistake of asking for some beer matching with our meals. After all a brewery. Forget it. We were recommended wine. Interesting!! We ended up choosing a $39 sirloin Steak amongst other items. Steak was tough and flavourless. We genuinely felt ripped off. <br/>Back to the the other side of Melbourne street for pre show dining. <br/><br/>

went here before a show at qpac to the smaller part of the café/restaurant, the food was amazing and the staff were great! thank you so much!

It's hard to understand all the bad reviews because our experience here was excellent. We had an enthusiastic waiter who really added to the experience and earned himself a tip, delicious meals (ribs for him, slow roasted pork for me) with tasty sides, lovely wine and divine dessert (deconstructed banoffie pie and chocolate pudding). Nothing to complain about at all and will definitely return.

Went for a nice mid-week lunch with friends - selection of beer was terrific and the food was delicious - just took a surprisingly long time to come out, given how quiet things were. Would go again though!

Poor service and timing and carelessly made food. Had Christmas lunch here - party of about 20. Booked for 12:30. Asked by restaurant staff to arrive on time as our pre-ordered main meals could not be held once they were ready to serve. So we did. Mains were served at about 2:30! No apology or reason given. Shared the Charcuterie Plate while we waited. Appalling construction. Nice muscatels and basil pesto. Buy everything else average. And it came with only 4 thin slices of half stale baguette...to share between 4 people hahaha My Beer Battered Fish and Chips main was poorly cooked - batter was quite a dark brown and not cooked properly inside. Chips were almost soggy. Salad was a bunch of mixed leaves with random slices of cucumber, radish and tomato, shoved into a bowl so small it was difficult to eat. Struggling to recall anything that I enjoyed. Go for the beer and cider. But I'd recommend you pass on the food!

Came here for a work function, always wanted to try this place out. heard their beers are real good. and so they are. and not to mention the apple cider.<br/>since is a work function we got ourselves a private area and that's where I know they got an area upstairs and we can have our own bar.<br/>we ordered some finger food... fish n chips, salmon avocado lil pancake (love them), duck Vietnamese rice paper rolls (a lil too dry), halloumi sliders (these are good), pizzas to share (hot and yum). (Dec'15)
Lola6
An impressive selection of james squire beers. Staff are attentive friendly and quick. The food is just ok. I will come back just for drinks
Caitlin Modini
Paid $22 for a calamari salad that was 99% rocket, had a grand total of 5 thumb sized squares of rubbery calamari, garnished with several olives (un-pitted) and a bitter tasting dressing. Would not have been impressed even if it was an entree; so as a main this was dismal.
Sahar&Aurelio
This place looked good from the outside, however, ending up being a very unsatisfying dining experience. We dined in the bistro. The service was appalling, especially when this is considered a restaurant. The staff did not want to answer any questions we had and we were seated for about 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. I got a rump steak and my partner got a truffle pizza. The steak was a horrible cut, and extremely tough. Like a cheap piece of meat from the supermarket. The pizza was even worse. It was greasy, horrible dough and very bland. This may be an ok place to get a couple of drinks and a quick pub meal. But if you are after a restaurant, do not even bother going to the bistro. You will leave very disappointed.

These guys need to sort their shit out. Ordered some bar snacks prior to a gig at QPAC and I'm still waiting for them....<br/><br/>Seriously waiting 50 mins and the food was still a no show. Had to leave to get to the show. The place was busy but not real busy and I saw a few people asking after meals that were obviously taking forever. If there's a delay, staff should let patrons know on ordering. I'm about to send them a grumpy email too.

Went here for dinner before a weeknight show at QPAC (restaurant section not the pub). <br/>Ambience: modern and sleek. On walking in you could tell it was a fine dining establishment but abit more on the casual side. We risked by not making a booking but as we arrived right on 6pm we were lucky to get a table for 2. <br/>Service: Very good. Our waitress gave us just the right amount of time to consider the menu and drinks before coming back for our orders. Food came out 15-20 mins later which wasn't bad considering there was a massive table of 16 who ordered before us.<br/>Food: I had the Free-Range Pork from the Ironbark Coal Pit (selection of the day) with side dishes of Truffle Pommes puree and proscuitto crumble, and green beans with mustard butter. Meat was very tender with subtle flavours. The truffle mash was excellent and helped absorb the delicious pork jus.  Hubby had the Rib Fillet which he said was nice but nothing extraordinary. <br/>Would be best to book ahead as it does get busy, especially if you have a group going together.
Yorkie_Traveller
We ate here with some friends on a Sunday lunchtime, we had booked a table in the restaurant in advance but it was really quiet when we arrived.<br/><br/>To be honest, I was pretty much expecting the average pub style fayre from the restaurant, but I was really surprised! The service and food were both excellent, the smoked duck to start was really nice (preferred the smoked duck to the battered ‘crispy’ duck), excellent ribs for my main and topped off with the chocolate fondant, a really tasty dessert I couldn’t resist!<br/><br/>Overall, really impressed with both the service and food, much better than I expected! Would return.
Tutu
Went here for lunch with a friend on Melbourne cup day. The Food unfortunately was very average, I was definitely expecting a higher quality of food here. <br/>
Hilarey Barton
We ate here on a busy stormy Sunday afternoon and as always it was packed to the brim. It was noisy as expected for a pub and there was live music (fantastic live music actually) so if you are after a nice quiet catchup with friends or family this isn't the place for you.<br/>However if you are after a nice glass of cider and some delicious food this is the place you are looking for! I had the beef croquettes and they were juicy and tasty and the sauce they came with was yummy. Two of my friends had the half chicken and neither was able to finish the portion size was out of control! The skin was crispy and the meat was moist and well cooked. Another friend had macaroni cheese that was a little disappointing, not very tasty, but she also had the arancini which she said was right up there with some of the best she had had. <br/><br/>The food gets ordered up at the bar and it was pretty busy so that may explain why the bartender was grumpy and made ordering extremely uncomfortable. However the staff the brought the food over were professional and friendly so maybe the bartender was just having a bad day
Patrick
I had lunch at Charming Squire today and ordered the pulled pork roll. The service was really good and the selection of food and drinks was awesome! The pulled pork roll seemed a little overpriced for what it was, just a white bread roll with pork and coleslaw with a side of chips. It was tasty but compared to the pulled pork roll/burger options around Brisbane this meal really lacks in taste.
Soph
Excellent! An impressive James Squire selection and great service. I didn't even know where to start in ordering a drink and the guy that served me was great help, he explained each beer and asked for my preference, then narrowed down my choices and gave me taste testers until I decided on one. There was live music and comfortable seating. I ordered the ratatouille and was the biggest taste explosion. However, their margarita pizza was a bit of a let down, quite oily. Prices were average for Southbank, and definitely coming back.
Mrs Tabin
Went here for dinner and drinks with some of the girls from work and ordered three pizzas between us. Needless to say, the food was great! I also enjoyed my pint of pear cider. I'll have to try coming in the afternoon for a more relaxed late lunch maybe.
Alex Salmon
Amazing food and atmosphere, staff could be friendlier however wasn't much of a bother as we were too mesmerised by the way the food was presented and tasted
Rachel Sheppard
Went here for dinner last night and was very impressed. Food was well worth the money, one of the best steaks I've ever had. Service was fast and efficient. Only downside was it was quite loud inside.
Nicenursie
Dined here last night with three friends after wanting to go here for a long time.  Ordered one starter and three mains between us.  Nothing came out for an hour and a half and, when it did, one of the dishes had been forgotten.  The pork skewers were dried out, the steak was gristly and the truffled mash tasted like Deb.  Feedback was given on the food but no offer of discount or refund provided.   The drinks were also overpriced.  On a positive note the venue and atmosphere were good and the staff friendly, however the overpriced bad food means I will never return to the restaurant at least.
Catzinthealley
Have been here a couple of times. Both times has been a very enjoyable meal. The meats are cooked perfectly. The sides were ok. The truffle mash was one of the best I have had and the desserts were really good, would go again just for the dessert. Service was good depending on the waiter. Second time we had to wait a long time as they had to redo the soufflé as it flopped in the oven. Would go again.
Piffthemagicdragon
A few mates and I ordered some pizzas - they were quite oily but somehow we didn't mind as they were very tasty anyway. Drink selection is as you would expect from a James Squire venue - plenty of James Squire varieties, with a satisfactory but not wide variety of other brands. Tasting paddels are a fantastic way of trying a variety of beverages. Extremely busy on weekends, but this contributes to the bustling atmosphere. Small barrels on the mezzanine help create a "craft" environment.
Carl Martens
Great place! Loved the selection of beers on tap. The food was good as well. Very much a pub atmosphere, with the music and noise, but finding a quiet place wasn't difficult. The staff were efficient and helpful.
MsK
Had always wandered by but never really gone in till tonight. At first glance it's a pub but then you walk in and realize there is also a restaurant component with full table service available too. We opted for the latter and once seated we found the menu to be different from the pub menu. It was a pleasant surprise. Service throughout the night was friendly and attentive, the waiter even checked to see why I didn't eat brussel sprouts on my dish as someone else had said it was undercooked so he wondered if that was also the case for me. I'm glad they care enough to ask for feedback!<br/>Food wise... Entrees:<br/>1)Seared scallops, truffles parsnip purée, asparagus velouté, crispy prosciutto. The flavours worked very well together and was delicious <br/><br/>2) Smoked and Crispy duck, figs, walnuts, goat's cheese, orange gel and basil. Was also delicious however too many figs made it a bit too sweet and it became overpowering <br/><br/>Mains<br/>1) Texas style smoked Denver steak, spiced BBQ sauce, lemon and roasted vegetables - was tender and moist but a little salty until a squeeze of lemon helped it. Roasted vegetables(zucchini, pumpkin, string beans) were alright<br/><br/>2) Crispy skin chicken, sweet corn purée, king brown mushroom, prosciutto - was more like a roast chicken. Mushrooms were a little bitter. There was also the addition of brussel sprouts which in my opinion was an unnecessary add on, it did nothing for the dish at all.<br/><br/>Side of Chunky chips and aioli - fluffy potato and great aioli.<br/><br/>The drinks menu is extensive and was very happy with my cocktail (secret mistress) and my husband had the hop thief American pale ale which was also very good!<br/><br/>Perhaps next time will come back for drinks and try the pub menu side to see how it stacks up.

I always find it hard to choose somewhere to go in such heavily populated suburbs like West End, the Valley and South Bank. We were out on a tuesday night and were in search of a plain and simple good hearty meal and The Charming Squire was all of the above. Not to mention the live music!. We decided to sit near the bar and order from the “Bar Menu” there was a whole variety of options from beef to seafood to pizzas to salads. I was faced with a very tough decision. After having walked past many times and seeing the open plan kitchen and butchery there was no way we were settling for vegetarian options. I had the Morrocan Style Rump Skewers (with spiced cous cous and mint yoghurt) $21. They were cooked magnificently and it was the perfect sized meal.

Visited earlier this year with a large group of friends. My first impression was that of a large, noisy, overcrowded night club with a restaurant stuck on the side. Needless to say it was difficult to have a decent conversation over the music from across the room.<br/><br/>Food was good but overpriced. Menu had enough variety to suit the various dietary requirements in our group.<br/><br/>Service was what you would expect from a medium-range restaurant.
Food Lover Rin
Can't say I was greatly impressed with food although friends we were singing with enjoyed the arancini balls.<br/>We usually only go there for the beer which isn't ridiculously priced, however, the food is for what you get! And the staff are not interested in helping or taking feedback at all! <br/>I would say they should've kept it a bar with just pub food but one of us had a burger and it was so dry, the bun was not fresh by any means and it just wasn't tasty - upsetting really we expected more. We'll go to microbreweries from now on I think!
Matt Conoulty
Overpriced portentous want to be "nuvo cuisine"The snotty waiter sneered through his hipster beard at the very thought of bringing children into this exclusive establishment...in Brisbane...which was empty!Good luck with that.
Bebe
What sort of restaurant offers an entree of 'sourdough and dukkah' and doesn't serve it with olive oil...but with butter!? Super dissapointing. <br/>We came in with a large party...waited an hour for our meals to arrive, most of the meats were overcooked and my own meal was stone cold. We didn't bother saying anything because by this point we were so hungry we didn't want to wait any longer! Understaffed at the bar, was told by the bartender not to order a cocktail because it was too busy and we'd have to wait a while. Restaurant waiter wasn't overly friendly, didn't bother checking how the meals were. No apology for delay. Was really dissapointed with the meals.. For $30-$45 mains I expected a far higher level of service and quality. Will not recommend or return.
The Invisible Food Critic
At the Regional Flavours Festival and tried the place I had always wondered every time I walk past it. I love my burgers & sliders and had high expectations of this place but in the end it was slightly disappointing. The flavors wasn't what I was expecting as it all came out slightly ordinary. Lets say the price was expensive versus the quality. Not quite sure about this place anymore if I really want to try it out again, maybe it was the QC, or maybe it was just the usual standard?
Sparky Romulus
Meat lovers are well catered for. Above average without being sensational. Three legged chairs and timber cross beams on tables are not ergonomic. The beer was good.<br/>
Naomi Whitehouse
Pros: good live entertainment, large tables for big groups, food arrived quickly, lots of different beers to sample.<br/>Cons: too dark in some places, food is average yet overpriced, only a few toilets (and they were really gross) and if you don't have a penis it will take you roughly a century to be served at the bar.
Greg Bishop
We were cautious on some of the comments about service but we were very happy considering this was a Saturday night and the place was packed. Food just lovely. This is a great asset for the Southside.
Lalala_Dannii
Restaurant is very funky and the food was delicious. <br/>Although the meals came out quickly, the waiter service was a little slow which is the only reason for less than full rating. <br/>Highly recommend the food here, YUM.
Aaron Turner
We headed to check this place out on a Saturday afternoon, was busy when we arrived & the venue is huge in size. Plenty on tap if you like James Squire beers but was a great arvo. Food was very simple but hit the spot, service OK not great. Worth another visit.
Shoko Arakawa
This is a must go place by making reservation with s good group of your foodie friends or a partner. Nice casual yet upscale industrial feel yo the place. <br/><br/>Most importantly though, food was amazing. I must give it to our server who recommended us all the dishes and wines for us. He was amazing though other girls were a bit rude when we were seated at the reserved table(yes we made a reservation!!!). <br/><br/>Even with this incident I already know I'm coming back there for the next time. Pork belly, duck, sides, wines and deserts were smashing hit. Beautiful plating that goes with the taste!
Lou E
We called through here on our way to dinner at Southbank for a look & what a fit-out they have done, this place is huge. Lots of Squire beers on tap & the food (on other tables) looked simple but nice.  Great venue, just the toilets seem a little underdone for the size of the place & how many people were in there.
Christine Hayward
Great food, great service.. Will definitely go again!
Matt McFarlane
Wish i'd read these reviews before going. Service was pretentious to the max. Our salmon came out over cooked, the 'apple crumble souffle' came out as a meringue, with no apple in sight. When we questioned both the location of the apple and the quality of the dessert, the waiter told us that's what a souffle was. No, idiot, no it's not.
Gabbie_87
Don't go for food but nice place. Not the first time here but thought I'd give the food another shot...it's still well below par and it's 50/50 with the service being good and bad. Food overpriced, cold, ordeal to get a knife and fork. However the beers and ambience are good with some live music and good vibe.
Daniel Montgomery
The charming squire is one of the best pubs/restaurant out there the waitstaff are great The food omg awesome with the meals coming out really quick for a Saturday night definitely a big tick in my book
Big Kev
Rude waitstaff, lousy food, most of our group of 16 didn't finish their meal. Absolute joke of a restaraunt, maybe stick to brewing beer.

I know, I know... breakfast isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of The Charming Squire... Since opening last year Charming has made quite the name for itself as a popular watering hole in Brisbane. More late night drinking sessions with your mates...less early morning brekky catch up with the girls...  Prepare to be pleasantly surprised. The Charming Squire has a hell of a lot more to offer than boutique beers.  Earlier this year Charming opened it's Brewer's Pantry  - a welcome addition to the South Brisbane breakfast scene. The charming little open air cafe is located right next to the South Brisbane train station. The space may be small but the breakfast menu packs quite the punch! You've got the James Squire Big Breakfast (Welsh Rarebit, Bacon, Sausage, Pulled Pork, Eggs, Mushroom, and Tomato), Classic Eggs Benedict on a Flaky Croissant, House made Granola , and Brioche French Toast with Banana, Ricotta, Almonds and Honey - to name a few! The chefs at The Brewer's Pantry utilize local produce to craft their sensational menu, with many of the ingredients being sourced from The Charming Squire's farm in Pullenvale. Next time you are wandering around South Brisbane in search for a cure for your brekky cravings don't look past The Charming Squire!

Charming Squire review. Worst breakfast I have ever had. Had just done Mother's Day run and our son was treating us to breakfast. We were only ones there. Waited over an hour and then received stone cold, undercooked food that was inedible. 2 of us sent ours back and 2nd time around they were no better. Complained to manager who was totally uninterested in our comments. Raw cold food served by disinterested ill trained staff is apparently OK. 3 of us didn't (couldn't) eat our meals. Still had to pay. Definitely wont be returning .

We have been a number of times and really enjoy it. Good atmosphere, service and food. It isn't fine dining, but that's not what we were expecting, so very happy with the food we have ordered each time (only 49% liking it seems rough in my opinion!) <br/>Will be back- it's a good spot for weekend dinner and drinks

Absolutely charming. Enjoyed the food, the service and the atmosphere. <br/>Seared scallops 9/10. <br/>Smoked duck 8/10. <br/>Sirloin 7/10. <br/>Goat Ragu 9/10. <br/>Lots of customers so I am not the only one enjoying the venue.

Food, wine and service all good. Went with three others the night before Good Friday. We arrived a bit late due to bad traffic but the staff were very accomodating. We explained that we had a show to see and they made sure that our food arrived in a timely manner. Everyone enjoyed the food and the wine on tap was great! Our waiter was very friendly. I would eat here again!

Great all round! Dined with 4 adults and 2 kids. Catered well for all of us. Food and service were great. Thanks Ado! Beers and wines were fantastic. Great spot for an easy gathering and uncomplicated food and drinks while visiting the Southbank precinct.

Terrible. I normally can't be bothered providing reviews however the service and food was terrible! There were two of us who ordered a couple of burgers at lunch on Saturday, the place was not busy and it took over an hour for the food to come. We asked the staff 30 minutes in and they said "5minutes" - another 30 minutes later it arrives. My burger was cooked however my friends was cold in the middle. We didn't bother finishing as we had enough of the experience, we raised it with the manager on the way out who apologised but said he couldn't provide a refund - just an offer to heat up the burger. Shocking experience, seriously don't bother.

VILE!. This is my first review in my life. Walked in excepting something very special. Instead I met with the most bland tasting food I have ever eaten. (olives were ok). <br/><br/>I still feel it sitting in the pit of my gut. <br/><br/>Seriously Mr Squire - read these reviews and lift your game. <br/><br/>Worst restaurant in southbank by a mile.

I came to the Charming Squire with a few friends after a friend's birthday dinner. The place was fairly empty but a table next to us had a few guys that had run in the YoungCare charity run that afternoon. Underneath their shorts they were wearing their red 'budgie smugglers' and one pulled his shorts partly down to show them off, momentarily. What happened next was a disgraceful show of intolerance and lack of understanding of Australian culture from one of the bouncers (#309). We will never return to the not so Charming Squire.

This is the worst resturant I have ever been. We asked the waitress to give some water and they charged us for $8 for each bottle so $24 all together just for water !!!! And manager was so rude to us about this matter. We are so angry cuz if they charge for water they have to tell us that cuz usually no resturant charge for water if they told us we wouldn't ask for water. The manger and waitresses are so rude and wouldn't even listen to us. Bad attitude and worst service I have ever seen of a resturant. I recommend no one ever comes here. At least read my review first before u order ! So u wouldn't be charged like $100 for just tap water!!!!!!!!! Wtf

Disappointment!. We came in to the restaurant after reading the menu outside, lured in with the promise of smoky, crispy skin duck and kipfler potatoes in duck fat. Not one of our expectations were met. There was no crispy skin, no smoky flavour and barely any duck. The meat that was there was overcooked and dry, rather like a supermarket frozen nugget sliced and served. The potatoes were soggy....just like microwave cooked potatoes redeemed only because they were kipfler. No crunch, no seasoning. So disappointed and not surprised that the bar side was busy but the restaurant quiet......diners probably only eat there once. We will not recommend it or eat there again. Saying that, we did not walk out or complain because the service was friendly and excellent.<br/><br/><br/>-----06 Mar, 2015-----<br/><br/>Disappointment!. ,Great ambience, great looking menu, but our meal was VERY disappointing. Trendy is one thing, but the portion size was laughable. No crispy skin, no smoked flavour and almost no duck. The duck meat that was there was over cooked and tasteless....like a presliced defrosted serve. A side of kipfler potatoes in duck fat.....soggy, no seasoning, no flavour. Excellent service meant that we did not send it back and leave, but we won't recommend the restaurant and we won't be back. Is no wonder the pub side was busy but the restaurant nearly empty.......diners only visit once.

GREAT. I was served by the nicest girl with glasses and tattoos last Friday night, she was bubbly and had a wealth of knowledge on the craft beers and made an amazing cocktail! Food took ages but beer and alcohol was amazing. 8/10

We went to Charming Squire for a birthday dinner with a group of 8. The food was quite good but service was very poor. Food and drinks took forever to come, wrong drinks served, food served cooked to the wrong requirements. We won't come back.
Spectre
Mixed impressions. Have been a few times in groups of 8 or so. Each time food has beeN good. Vegetarian options limited but quite nice. Ambience/decor is really good however service on last visit was terrible - pretentious and rude and condescending. Friendly service should never be underrated if you want return customers. Only thing that let this place down for me.
Jan Rotinen
Very poor service, we have been waiting 35 minutes for our dessert despite of being the only customers in the restaurant. Good food though.
Nicky McGrath
Really don't understand why this place doesn't have a better rating. Came here for a lovely meal on Valentine's Day. Beautiful food, great beer and wine list, and exceptionally passionate and likeable staff. A fantastic night! (Definitely check out the tap beer options and plethora of fairly priced wines on the cellar lost. Yum!)

Great Beer. Have been quite a few times now - favourite spot before seeing anything at QPAC<br/>I think their beer menu at the bar describing each Squire beer is really great and staff are usually funky and...charming!<br/><br/>Good spot.
Aevinning
Disappointing. Quite disappointed with dinner at the restaurant. Waiting staff very pleasant and helpful but wait for main course unacceptable. Pasta certainly not up to standard and on the whole quite expensive. These short comings were acknowledged following our displeasure.
Cav
Poor service, quality food, risky choice. Food was good, service was horrible.<br/><br/>TIP #1 Make sure you speak slowly and clearly as their staff are incapable of taking bookings, following drink orders and anything that requires them to offer service to at least a good standard.

This busy little addition to the South Brisbane bar/restaurant/cafe scene is essentially a craft beer bar and this is where The Charming Squire triumphs. The selection of beer on tap is very, very good and the way it is all served and presented is well worth a visit. Yesterday it was the hottest day ever and the place was packed with drinkers quenching their thirst!!<br/><br/>The food is good as well although it is a little expensive and the portions are a small, especially the salads and the oven style chips which as well as being a little on the meager side are basic and lack a little bit of adventure.

Terrible service but decent food. Quite expensive for the meals. We went on a Saturday night and although the starters came out reasonably promptly, it seems that our mains o4der had been forgotten. About 50 minutes after we ordered, a waiter came by to let me know that the kitchen was out of the pork that I ordered but I could have lamb instead. It is ridiculous that they didn't work it out about 45 minutes earlier. When the lamb came out, it was actually quite nice. It ended up only another 20 minutes after that for the mains but even so, waiting over an hour for this type of restaurant is just bad.
Leamurphy73
Charming not. We waited over an hour after ordering our meals to be told there was no more pork. Service was not impressive considering the price of the menu.

Overpriced and poor quality.<br/>Went to dinner with friends in the restaurant section of The Charming Squire. Service was poor. The scotch tasted like metho. And the food was considerably overpriced for the quality and quantity of what we received.

Not great. We had lunch in the restaurant. Our bill between the three of us came to $225.<br/><br/>We had the corn cob, the smoked duck, the pork roast, crispy chicken, oysters, the cheese platter and a soufflé. <br/><br/>The pork and the corn came out cold so we sent them back. The smoked duck was amazing. <br/>We also had a very strange and awkward waiter and one that was quite charming and lovely. <br/>When the cheese plate came out the fruit loaf was still frozen. <br/><br/>This place needs to get a few things right before I will come back again. Overall average.

Good drinks, good food, good service. I read so many negative reviews while I was sitting here contemplating ordering some food, and I thought "Challenge Accepted"! I ordered the pork skewers, the chicken wings, the mushroom and truffle arancini balls and pulled pork sliders. Every single dish was delicious and there was enough to feed 3 people easily for just $60! The selection of craft beers is huge, and you can order a tasting paddle with 4 x 50ml glasses of your choice of tap beers for $12. Definitely worth it! The place itself has an awesome atmosphere and its huge but still feels cozy. <br/><br/>My advice, give this place a go and don't judge it til you try it

Nice place, nice beer, poor service and average food ... Only just gets an average. The design and ambience are great. The open kitchen in full view from the street makes big promises. We were disappointed. Firstly we were served bread with a side of nuts, despite mentioning our daughter has a nut allergy and the waitress promising to check. <br/>The menu is basic but offers what reads as an honest quality choice of meats ( some seafood but mostly meat). Two of us ordered chicken and chips. Apparently the restaurant had no chicken! This seemed very odd. <br/>The meat was ok although the pork skewers were good. The chips came without any lemon or vinegar so were bland. To be honest the burger and chips at Grilled are better. <br/>Finally we were charged for the chicken which was unavailable as well as the second choices we made. <br/>This was my husband's birthday lunch but failed to be memorable at all. We would go back for a drink but would not stay for food.

The 'Go To' Bar. I'm disappointed the reviews on this place are so negative. It is literally packed each of the 5 or so times we've been. We have dined in twice so far, and each time the steak has been fantastic. The 'money shot' dish is anything from the char pit. If you like a steak and craft beer to go with it, then it's really worth hitting this place. BUT make sure you book, it's very hard to get into ...... which again makes me wonder why their score is so low!

Didn't actually eat any food her but I loved the atmosphere, and the presentation of there beer menu is so cool and fun :) bar staff are great and beer was fricking tasty, $9 a pint for beautifully Aussie brewed brews!
Foodie14
Overpriced food. I paid $18 for pork sliders and was told there would be 3 sliders, when the food came out there were only 2 ($9 per slider..) and the waiter informed us they had recently downsized their portion sizes. I'm assuming this happened after I handed over the money? Similarly the beef croquettes were approx $15 for four meatball sized crumbed beef logs. Skip the food..

Not so charming! Check your wine!. I went to the bar and purchased a glass of pinot gris "on tap" ($14). I was not made aware that, had I chosen sauvignon blanc, happy hour prices would have applied. Anyway, I go back to my table and sip my wine to find it is 90% water. I caught the attention of a waiter who replaced the wine without comment. I wondered how "on tap" wine could have water introduced into the line and was informed that this could happen if the line had recently been cleaned using water. All up, not a happy experience - so beware.

Excellent lunch. After making a lunch booking for Christmas lunch for a group of golf buddies, I read a few reviews on urbanspoon.com and was worried that we might have a regrettable experience. Happily, I can report that was not the case. Apart from one item ordered not being available, we had an excellent lunch with good food and service in very pleasant surroundings.

Put off by Chef. This place has a Chef screaming at the servers the entire time. Our meals came at a reasonable time but the Chef was constantly yelling for the servers to come take the food out. It was terribly annoying and killed the mood of the experience.<br/>Although the pig in the window looks impressive upon entering, it tasted rather bland and I was only served the lean cuts. I will not be going back here for a meal anytime soon.

We are there, lunch the ve.... We are there, lunch <br/>the venue is fine, huge area both indoor & out <br/>extensive menu staff advised a few choices had been exhausted <br/>chose fish & chips, we shared that, portion was more than adequate. <br/>beer choices extensive wine by the glass could've been on the pricey side <br/>rate the place 7/10

First Time Writer. This is my first time writing a review on Urbanspoon but I really wanted to share my recent dining experience at The Charming Squire. The venue itself has a really nice vibe and looks good. However the food not so much, we started with the beef croquettes which were really nice however it was all down hill after that... I order the "Brisket Special" there was very little that was special about it, it was tough, lacked flavor and was served with a horrible spinach puree. My boyfriend ordered the steak which was over cooked and over priced! All in all no a fantastic dining experience, however the wait staff were good and the bar menu looked a little more appealing. My advice - if you are thinking about going maybe stick to the bar.

Terrible. Avoid.. Without a doubt one of our most disappointing dining experiences. It was quite something to behold. The restaurant was virtually empty - in fact there were as many servers as customers - but somehow initial service was painfully slow. We eventually managed to order drinks and, not wanting to waste the rare opportunity of having a server at our table, we also ordered food. 20 minutes later we were informed that they'd run out of the "special" (in an empty restaurant!), so 3 people in our group had to re-order. We spent the next 90 minutes engaged in the challenge of ordering drinks while we waited for our dinner to arrive. At one point the server spilled half a beer on the table and then seemed genuinely shocked that we would want it topped up. Eventually, spread out over a period of about 30 minutes, our meals arrived. Up until this point we'd held onto a giddy thought that perhaps the food might be worth the wait. It wasn't. It really wasn't. Some of the meals were stone cold and gluggy - as if they'd been cooked an hour ago and left to sit on the bench. We sent them back and politely declined the offer of a replacement order (it was getting pretty late). The remaining meals were tiny, but we shared what we had and left as soon as possible.<br/><br/>I wish that this was an isolated case, but from reading the other reviews it seems to be the norm. I can't recommend strongly enough that this place be avoided.

Extensive beer menu. The bar is a great place to relax with a large range of beers and wine's but the restaurant is far from nice. I have had better battered fish from the local fish and chip shop, definitely not worth the $25 they are charging and my wife was not impressed with her $22 lamb burger.<br/>Service was friendly and quick but the food needs improving.<br/>I will probably be back but definitely for drinks only.

The first time I came here it was a work lunch and the restaurant was not very busy, the food was prompt and tasty. However! On the second occasion, (a work function again) my boss's dinner never turned up and after an hour and a half cancelled the order. My vegetarian pizza was nice, but after asking twice whether it contained a certain ingredient it was still included in the pizza and I had to eat around it. The others in our party were not particularly impressed with their meals either. However lovely location. Would only return for lunch.
Anyes63
Not impressed, don't bother. We went there for our son's 18th birthday. We had to wait over an hour to get our meals on a Wednesday night. The really need to improve as i can see it is a problem reported by others. They claimed they had a function. Well obviously they couldn't cope. Wpuld avoid, in particular arpubd busy festive season
Samantha.johnson
Oh dear Mr Squire.. I really wanted to love this place - with its great location and fab decor I could see it becoming a regular for our crew, but golly were we disappointed. We had a table booked for 10. When we arrived they explained that we could order off the "quick menu" (smaller selection of starters, mains, desserts) if we wanted our food out in 30 minutes, but ordering off the main menu would be 45-60minutes. We were all pretty famished so ordered off the quick menu although it meant the boys couldn't order ribs from the full menu. One and a half hours later our mains started to dribble out. The steaks (that could only be ordered off the menu as medium to ensure quick service) were well-done yet cold to the touch(!?). Those that had ordered steaks had finished their meals by the time the sides started arriving. Sides were finished and finally the three fish dinners arrived for our starving friends. After requesting to speak to the manager three times (to be told he was extremely busy) he finally came to see us half an hour later. I will say that he was apologetic and gave us a substantial deduction on our bill but it was truly a nightmare experience and no discount can make up for the ruined birthday dinner for our friend. I had read all sorts of horrible reviews about this place and really wanted Squire to prove them wrong, but alas all of the complaints and poor reviews seem to be spot on. Such a shame. Many other high quality establishments in Brisbane - no reason to ever return here.

1 hour wait for starters. We decided to check out the restaurant on Saturday night. The food was pretty standard, not bad. They have a lot of service staff on and you can readily flag a helpful waiter/waitress if required. However this is a massive venue, with a restaurant section, a bistro/cafe area and a huge bar area, as well as a function venue upstairs. It seems that ONE kitchen services the WHOLE venue, including the function area - that is a lot of covers and meals to push out. Unfortunately for us as there was a function on that night, it was clear the priority was to get meals out to the function. Our 5 share plates didn't get to our table until an hour after we placed our order. We could look into the kitchen from our table and see that the chefs were under pressure, and we felt sorry for them (though not as sorry as we felt for our hunger pangs). The management REALLY need to put on more staff in the kitchen. While I liked the look, location and food, I won't be returning in a hurry.

This is a Must. The places has fantastic food, such a good atmosphere and although beers to please me and my large group. This will not be the last time I eat and drink here!!!!

Had a Friday night catch up with a mate here a few weeks ago. What a great looking pub. It's not all hipster West End but it's also not your main stream big chain pub either. I'm not a massive craft beer fan but at least there's s couple in the James Squire range I can live with. Food is the reason I would come back here, I had an awesome Prawn pizza, super basic & perfect thin base. In the restaurant section things looked pretty good from what I saw & you can actually see right into the kitchen from the street where they have a wood fired spit roast, there was a whole pig on there when I went past, yum! Yes it's a very busy pub & the restaurant was jam packed too when I was in the bar section but it's the new kid in town that's big & fairly polished rather than dark & rustic with beards & suspenders like many other joints at the moment. I like it, but I like thin traditional pizzas & I love spit roasted meat, so I'll be back just to try that alone.

Impromptu catch up - great Idea. Last night we called an impromptu catch up with a bunch of friends at The Charming Squire. We were all impressed with the place and had a great time. We sat underneath near the brewery and worked out way through the tasting paddles. Clever way to try the different beers and work out which one we all liked best. The Going Once beer, it’s made on site and was recomended by bar staff and was a winner for me, and the bar menu is great. Definitely going back for round two.
Michelle Romans
Not impressed!. Popped in for a post-theater drink, only to receive sour looking, cocky bar staff. No greeting, no smile....just a "what do you want?" (the second drink - exactly the same treatment). Upon looking at the menu just minutes before walking through the door, I actually considered bringing my husband for dinner over the weekend. Definitely wont bother. Rude staff that made us feel very unwelcome.

Hostess with the leastess. We had dinner here on a Sunday night and the food was good- beautifully prepared, decent value, and the wait wasn't too long despite being moderately busy- however the staff really let this place down which ultimately sways my vote.<br/><br/>While our table server was wonderful, the main hostess was anything but. Not only did she blatantly give preferential service to friends of hers who were dining there also (even though we had made a booking), she refused to allow us to move tables even though others nearby were free and unreserved, rolled her eyes as she walked away from diners (I'm sure we copped an eye roll, too), checked her watch numerous times throughout the night looking bored, and all-in-all ooze general unpleasantness to both us and the tables nearby who were also making comments about her attitude. <br/><br/>Maybe she was simply having a bad night but it has made us rethink recommending The Charming Squire to friends without giving them a disclaimer first. Can't fault the food though - and the tripod chairs are a trip.
Bridieh
The charming squire more like the rip off lier. We went to this restaurant and were appauled! Not only did the chairs have three legs, causing them to be really unstable, but also the waiter spilled a drink on one of our dining companions. We also paid $21 for three coin sized pieces of duck, ridiculous! We only ordered 2 'share entrees' but we waited for over 40 minutes. Never again!
Sesulls
Charming squire. All I have to say is that I have never seen so many people fall hard to the floor. They have tripod chairs and literally I have seen 4 people so far collapse in 20 mins. #fallsohard. #muhfuhkrswannafineme. Good ambience and food though. #datfoodtho.

Mixed feelings. The food was great- when we eventually got it -and there is a good choice of wine and beers. We ordered at 8pm after having to signal our waitress that we wanted drinks and to order. By 8.50 we were getting really hungry so asked where our food was. It arrived at 9pm. This was a Tuesday night so it was only moderately busy. There seemed to be plenty of wait staff but they didn't come near us. It's a strange way to run a business as they could have sold us more drinks and we probably would have ordered desserts but with no one offering any service this didn't happen. No tip for service like that!
Ccd
Crap. Service was horrible, super unfriendly. Waited almost an hour for food on a quiet night, paid ridiculous prices.

DON'T BOTHER. A terrible experience, slow food service, poor quality and overpriced.<br/>A group of 4 And we arrived at 540 and ordered by 550. Ordering a garlic bread and mains we were anticipating to be gone before 7. First drinks and garlic bread arrived quickly and it all went downhill from there. Topping up of water and asking for second drinks was slow. After waiting 45 minutes for our mains we asked our waiter how long the food would be. He went off to the pass and did not return until 5 minutes later, after delivering other people's food to say our food would be there in a few minutes. 10 minutes later our food arrived. My fish dish was an overly large serving of the accompaniments and a small portion of fish. The accompaniments were overstated and the fish boring and bland. The sides with the other guests meals were also heavily salted and very very oily. <br/>The boys were sharing the coal pit roast , 500g of lamb. The lamb came out as 3 lovely slices and one huge hunk that look like a cave man had grabbed it off and chucked it on the plate. The 500g of lamb had at least 100g hunk of fat on the hunk of meat served. Considering the lamb and sides only needed plating or heating and fish takes under 10 minutes and hour is an excessively long time to wait for a meal. When I provided feedback to the waiter and she said she would pass it on there was no offer of compensation or apology for the quality of food or poor service we received. Disgusting we will never return. <br/>I do hope the chefs and management bother to read the feedback on this site and others, by all accounts it does not appear positive! Shame we didn't read before we went.

Good place for drink awesome venue but just don't order food waited way to long and the food was very average like a small cafe pitty because it has such a nice restaurant

Good atmosphere but.... We came here for grand final night so the atmosphere was pretty good however food and drinks are on the pricey side. we ordered a pizza and a few pulled pork rolls; the food came promptly and pizza was tasty. The pork rolls were not ideal - on a hot dog bun, over sauced and although the pork was somewhat tender, it was not pulled (contrary to its title). if you are asking $18 for a sandwich & chips, then I think it should reflect its name. at least the chips were tasty.

Utterly Disappointing. I won't bore you with overly wordy sentences, i'll just give you the facts of what happened and my advice, DON'T EVEN BOTHER TRYING THIS PLACE!!!!!<br/><br/>- Horribly disorganised bar staff - it took 8 minutes and input from 4 people to locate a bottle of wine from their fridges<br/>- Rude bar staff that care more about finishing their personal conversation with a colleague than taking our food order. When the person taking our order finally finished their chat, we were greeted with raised eyebrows, thats it, not even a "hello".<br/>- Ordered Aioli to have with meals.... it came 10 minutes after our meals.<br/>- One of our meals was a steak, which was bland except for the overwhelming flavour of char. My Lamb burger was fine, but even an average fish and chip shop can produce something of equal quality.<br/>- Our table was cleared and the staff member didn't ask if there was an issue with the meal when only 1 cut was taken from the steak. We watched the waiter take the steak via a supervisor or manager to show them, their response was a glance at the plate and then promptly went back to their phone conversation.<br/>- I approached said supervisor/manager and told him about the issues we had experienced and i was met with apparently no knowledge of the plate he had looked at 2 minutes before. I was offered a beer to make up for a rubbish $41 steak, 'cause that makes up for it and the others shortcomings of this overrated place.<br/>Instead of putting yourself through this, take a very short walk just up the road to one of the many other perfectly good eating places Southbank has to offer.
James.vaughanpow
Not so Charming squire.. Went there for drinks and dinner before heading to the playhouse. Having seen other reviews regarding long wait times, we arrived at around 5:30pm, and had ordered dinner by 5:40pm (for a 7:30pm show). <br/><br/>Many things went wrong in our experience.<br/>Upon getting a table, our first waitress spilt one of our beers all over the table (and onto me) as she passed out the menus. After barely a sorry, she wiped up the mess using our napkins (not even a wet cloth after)- and then did not even offer to replace the beer.<br/>After sorting ourselves out, we started looking over the menus. We ordered off the show menu- this was touted as being a quick service by the waitress. Time by this point: 5:40pm.<br/>Ordered another set of drinks as we waited.<br/>And waited.<br/>And waited.<br/>Over our wait, we were assured by 3 different staff members that our entrees were on the way- by this point it was around 6:30pm<br/>About 5 minutes after the last staff member came over, they finally arrived. They were ok. Two of us had the prawns, which were burnt.<br/><br/>Once we have eaten these, our table was cleared and we were given new cutlery- though one knife was drty and we had to ask for a replacement.<br/>And again, we waited.<br/>And waited.<br/>And waited some more.<br/>Keeping in mind that we ordered at 5:40pm- we were understandably getting pretty annoyed about this wait. It was now just after 7:00pm. This time we asked one of the floor supervisors about the wait. He seemed apologetic about the wait, and offered us a free round of drinks at the bar as apology. Whilst a decent gesture, it didn't speed up the process.<br/>Eventually (around 7:20pm), we had to leave to make our show. We spoke to the female floor supervisor, and she seemed very reasonable about us leaving- we said we were willing to pay our drinks tab, but she said not to, that the service we had received didn't deserve it and she fully understood us leaving.<br/><br/>Whilst this place is a lovely after-work drinks venue, it is a horrible place to have food. Any of these review talking about wait times are not an exaggeration (we would have loved a one hour wait!!!).<br/>1 star.

We had lunch for four of us here on Tuesday. We thought it was excellent value for money. The food, presentation and service was very good. We had four main courses comprising the ribs, the half chicken, the vegetarian wraps and the fish and chips. All were good portion size, superbly presented, hot and tasty. We then had three desserts that were really well presented, tasty and nice portion size. We had a beer, sparkling wine and two soft drinks. Following our desserts we had two coffees. All served without delay by a lovely, courteous waitress. I read the previous reviews about this place and was almost put off. Good job we decided to make up our own minds. The meal was one of the best we have had for weeks. The bill for all four of us came to $191.80 in total which I think represents great value for money. We will be definitely going back, as well as telling our friends about our great dining experience there.

Hopeless Service. Went there for dinner last night with 3 friends. Restaurant looked really nice however it took 1 hour to get entree and then another hour to get mains one of which was a cold steak. Waiters were fine in getting drinks however the poor girls were at the mercy of a hopeless kitchen and manager. Many people in the restaurant experienced the same problem and were very disappointed as well. I wouldn't bother in going there- plenty of other good restaurants in South bank that can actually serve food within a reasonable time
2B
Not charming yet.... I understand that the restaurant is new, but overall our experience was very disappointing. Waiting over an hour for an overpriced steak with two 'sides' (why are they on separate plates when the tables are so small?) is unacceptable. In reading the other reviews here, it seems as though we received our meals in record time. <br/><br/>The kitchen clearly can't handle the number of options on the menu and the number of seats in the restaurant. If this is just a 'teething' issue, management needs to step up and either simplify the menu, or take a third of the tables in the restaurant and put them in a back room until the kitchen can handle full capacity. <br/><br/>On a positive note, the waitstaff should be commended for maintaining a positive and helpful attitude in the face of a great number of complaints (we overheard plenty during our meal). The beer is great, and the interior is very well done.

Meh, just another fail for Brisbane. I've heard good things about other venues in Tasmania and Melbourne but looks like this one is victim to the lack of competition in Brisbane. Boo.
Matt Linger
Awesome space with a great fit out. Love the steel and copper. Too bad it was downhill from there. Food was very average for the price. Burger was tiny. And the wait was way too long. Staff didn't even know the names of the pizzas they were handing out - 'here's the pizza with olives' doesn't suffice when there are multiple pizzas with olives.
Ml
Wait for entrees was half an hour and mains was an hour. If you've got good company makes time go quicker because the food is fantastic.
Gibbo
To all those people who are giving this place a good review, you obviously work here! This place was a shambles as soon as we walked in. Our drinks order was stuffed up 3 times, our food took an hour to come out and was also incorrect. 45 mins wait for 2 oysters?? We were offered a refund and free round of drinks by a waitstaff, but this was then retracted by an unapologetic manager. Are you serious! Very very disappointing. The owners need to address this quick smart as bad news spreads fast in a small city like Brisbane and I'm certainly not recommending anyone I know to go here.
S.d.watson
Work Required. Waited an hour for a table, then a two hour wait for mains!! Had the staff advised the wait was going be that long we would have ordered entrees. Being told "we're next" and then waiting another 10 mintues whilst plates of food went past our table made us all a little annoyed. On top of being late the food was luke warm and my partners steak was cooked medium when he ordered rare. The food did taste good but would have been far better hot and on time. I'd give the food a wait until they can sort out their kitchen/wait staff issues however the Bar was fun and had a great atmosphere.
Weightmanwilliam
Incapable. Waited for over 90 minutes to receive food after ordering at 7:30pm on a Saturday night. The kitchen staff are incapable of catering to a full house. Would not recommend for dinner on a Friday or Saturday night.
Squirrel
Early days but needs improvement. Had lunch on sunday - arrived at 12:30 and waited about 1 1/4 hours for main meal to come out. entrée was served in a timely fashion but scallops were cold so very disappointing. the 200 gm eye fillet at $44 is well overpriced and very dry - certainly not medium as requested. wait staff were trying as hard as they could but when the food is incredibly slow and not warm its difficult. also pet hate is describing something on a menu as something it isn't ie menu describes crispy baby cabbage which when it arrived was brussel sprouts - these 2 things are not the same and a lot of people have a strong aversion to brussel sprouts... not sure if we would go back again - steak is way too expensive
Rachelg272
A very disappointing experience. I understand that all new restaurants tend to have a few teething issues, but this was ridiculous. I went there for dinner on Friday night, We made a reservation for 8pm and didn't receive our food for over an hour and a half. They were out of the beef steak, which we all wanted to order and when the lamb finally did arrive, it was full of fat and largely um-edible. Luckily the two sides it came with were fairly decent, but when your paying $34 per meal it just doesn't seem worth it for some mash and broccoli. Although our meals had good portion sizes, we watched other people receive the burgers and the pulled pork roll with disappointment as they were extremely small, yet still priced at $20-23. I agree with previous comments that a lot of food seemed to be delivered to the bar area, including some nice looking pizzas which weren't included on the restaurant menu. The three legged chairs are also a bit of a hazard, they are unstable and easily unbalanced. The only consolation was the free round of drinks we received for having to wait so long for the food. Overall a very poor experience. The bar itself is rather impressive and a much larger establishment than I was expecting. This place has so much potential if they can work out the food situation.
Ifmessig
I hate to be that guy. However, after dining at the James Squire brew house in Melbourne's docklands I expected my experience in Brisbane to be just as enjoyable. Unfortunately I am unable to write a review on the food as it has been nearly an hour since I ordered. I can understand that you are still in the processes of finding your feet, but this is ridiculous. One word of advice guys. Get it right before opening. I will not be here again.
Robynmcgahan
If you are hungry enough, eat a chair leg!. Oh dear, what is going on at this place???? One hour and 45 mins before we were served our food in the restaurant last Saturday night. As we looked around the place and wondered where the candid camera was, we saw that NO ONE in the quite busy restaurant had food in front of them, all of us looking at each other in hungry disbelief. However there was a constant parade of food being carted out to the bar area. The kindly waitress said she sadly couldn't bring us any food, but she would be happy to keep bringing us overpriced bottles of wine to help ease our pain. Are there fines for that??? When we did finally get served after we made a number of pleas to the staff, we had 2 stone cold steaks, one inedible tough pork dish and some ribs that the recipient said were fine, but he would have enjoyed a chair leg by then. Actually, this has clearly been a regular occurrence , given the oh so groovy three legged chairs in the place. We did manage to pass the interminable time by practising our balance skills on these ridiculous chairs. We observed a number of people failing the test however. <br/>We asked the floor manager " how he thought the night was going?" Yes, he agreed things were a bit shambolic. (A bit!!). He advised us the bar was experiencing a busy night with food orders and they just hadn't found the time to take care of the restaurant orders. Well that's a great formula for a new restaurant to work on. Good luck with that. We'd hate for the revellers in the bar to have to wait for their wedges while those of us paying substantial prices in the restaurant actually get fed.
Lizzy
Way over priced! We ordered 5 sharing plates for 4 people. We had to wait an hour for our food. Every time we asked a waiter about our food they didn't come back to us. When the food did eventually come the servings were so small that we walked away hungry. I don't expect to pay $100 for lunch and walk away hungry.

We went to The Charming Squire on a Friday night when it was really busy. We got a massive reserved table and were on a budget. Overall, the food was amazing. The service was crap, and the prices followed closely behind it. We bought the Arancini, as we loved the homemade ones we've had previously. They were $15 for 5 small balls. They tasted absolutely amazing complete with mushrooms and truffle. The value of this unfortunately was not worth it as we craved more but didn't see the price as being worth it. It took 1 hour to get these little balls of heaven and we didn't receive even recieve a napkin or cutlery. It was messy and we were starving by the time we got it. We got no apologies and I wouldn't have known if we had because the music was so loud in the dining area (what sounded like a nightclub but had no dance floor) we couldn't talk without yelling. The interior design of The Charming Squire was really great, and the menus were well presented but clearly they needed to increase their value because it didn't have the fine dining experience needed for those prices.

New restaurant with a lot of promise. First let me start with, the look from the outside of Charming Squire is incredibly hard not to find luring.. Seriously, as you walk past, you walk past the kitchen that you can see into and watch them prepare the delicious food and watch that succulent meat cook.. it truly is a beautiful sight. Then you have the restaurant area, all wood, polished smooth wood tables, leather and wooden seat with a nice relaxing atmosphere which you can just lose track of time in. Yeah, I was in a happy place at 4pm after work ;)<br/><br/>Let's start<br/><br/>Drinks:<br/>House Beer <br/><br/>Orange, pineapple, and red cordial mocktail (seriously good stuff) <br/><br/>Starters:<br/>Pulled Pork Sliders: <br/>If it were possible, I would eat these all at once.. they were that delicious. The mix of taste with the pork, apple sauce and colslaw was perfect. Even the bun was amazing, with it soft chewy goodness.<br/><br/>Beef Croquettes:<br/>I must confess, I had no idea what I was in for with this dish. But after reading on the menu it was Kimberley Red beef.. I was very curious on the taste. Then the dish came and the presentation of it was remarkable, and the taste no less. The beef alone was enough to make me want to pick up the pieces with my fingers and just eat them like chips, after rubbing them in the dip :). So much taste and flavor, definitely trying the Kimberley Red Beef main next time :) <br/><br/>Mains:<br/>Here there was a slight problem, my friends order was misheard and the waiter delivered a hot salmon salad instead of the smoked chicken salad she ordered. Simple mistake, and it was fixed effortlessly with no dramas. the waiter was very kind and apologetic, great service all round from him.<br/><br/>Smoked Chicken and Goats Cheese Salad:<br/>I applaud them with this.. there was without a doubt an abundance of chicken in this salad, unlike some places that give you a few little piece scattered on a plate. This salad had larger slices of chicken and was filled with pumpkin, goats cheese, hazelnuts, and pumpkin.. it was hard not to taste how good it was.<br/><br/>Meaty beef short ribs:<br/>These bad boys.. my goodness. The title does it justice, there were sure meat on those bones that slid clean off effortlessly (cooked perfectly). And the additional BBQ Sauce that came with it, once added to the ribs (or in my case the mashed potato too), made it taste even better.. They tasted so well, that to do it justice you have to use your hands and get messy :). Seriously.. the sow cooked texture and flavor simply made amazing.<br/><br/>Dessert:<br/><br/>After a long decision and talk we finally narrowed it down to one option, the Assiette of mandarin & orange (the waffles are next). <br/>Just look at the photo of this, I'll wait.. This is mind blowing.. There isn't one part of this dessert that doesn't do it justice. I mean the crumble, the sobet, all the way to that giant macaroon (which too a little force to break with the spoon, although just stealing it and eating it was certain an option I was thinking of). So sweet and delicious, choosing a dessert is no simple task. <br/><br/>So was this a perfect dinner, no flaws, or pain? Not perfect, but so close. I'm mean, sure the error on the salad.. but it was handled so professionally and politely I really have to give it to the waiter. Also, I wouldn't mind a little more to the non-alcoholic drink menu... but that's nit picking, the mocktail was pretty nice.<br/>The other little negative was at the end with getting the bill, once more people came, we were avoided and it took some time to get his attention to get our bill. But truly only a minor defect. <br/><br/>Amazing Atmosphere, Delicious Food, and Great Service.. ticks the boxes, give it a go now :)

Outstanding experience. Love this restaurant. From the timber floor and triangular chairs to the efficient and friendly staff.<br/>The atmosphere is great and the food is amazing. A "must-try".

Amazing!. This is one of the best American restaurants I've eaten at in Brisbane! The food is so reasonably priced and tastes incredible. Service was exceptional! Enjoyed everything the Charming Squire had to offer.
Espresso&Matcha
Needless to say, it looked quite spectacular. However, when ordering, it struck me as singular that I wasn't asked how I'd like my steak done. As someone who prefers their steak rare, it was very well done for my liking (((p(>o

Upon walking into the bar, my immediate thought process was ‘wow…bigger than I expected. Much bigger’. Having usually frequented much smaller craft beer bars such as The Archive and Scratch, I was surprised when it had little resemblance to either of those places. The downstairs area was a cavernous industrial space, aligned with a bar up one end, a multitude of bar stools, high bar tables, and large-group-friendly low tables, backdropped by what I could only assume was the brewing equipment, displayed behind large sheets of reflective glass. It gave the impression of a light and airy space, despite the crowded tables and craft-beer synonymous copper features and wooden decor.

The Charming Squire opened its doors last Thursday the 28th of August and as expected when a juggernaut like Lion starts swinging bags of cash around you get a rather impressive looking pub, albeit dressed in hipster clothing. The place is huge and will easily seat a few hundred people with bar, outdoor and casual dining seating areas it blends seamlessly into the ever beautiful South Bank. The lay out is a mix of concrete, wood and steal with some benches, seats and stools for seating. As expected there is ample James Squire branding around the place with fancy lighting and other neat features. The in-house brewery has produced a session-able ale called "Going Once Galaxy Ale" and is rather fruity upfront (thank you Galaxy hops!) with a familiar lager backbone, sure to be a hit as we head into the warmer weather. All the James Squire staples are on tap from 150 Lashes to Jack of Spades Porter to Hop Thief and even the apple and pear ciders are included. The bottled range however is la
Sunshine And Gin
Gosh James Squire has good branding. The label has a terrific back-story about a thief who was better at brewing than he was at stealing, excellent themed beer names and the advantage of being one of the earliest in the rise of craft beer producers, and now probably the largest brewer of craft beer in the country. You can buy James Squires everywhere, and they just keep growing in range and craftiness. Now in Brisbane, we have our own James Squires mega-bar – The Charming Squire in South Bank. Yes, I am using the term ‘mega’ bar because it really is. The place is huge, with bars stretching over two stories and balconies out onto the street as well as a restaurant. Inside the decor is wood and concrete with the ubiquitous copper brewing equipment behind glass and a guide to choosing the right brew for you behind the bar. The kitchen is a theatre you cannot see from the dining room, but people walking by are treated to sights of pigs on spits, frying chips and surprisingly calm chefs. Th
A Matter Of Taste
I generally don’t like pork. And I absolutely LOVE these pork sliders from The Charming Squire. Smokey BBQ slow braised pork, apple sauce and coleslaw…

The fish and chips were wrapped in a sheet of faux-newspaper, presented on a wooden chopping board was also some garden salad. The beer batter was crunchy with each bite and the cod was cooked so well; its flesh was tender and tasted extremely delicious with the tartare sauce.

We had a lovely meal at The Charming Squire. The food was quite good and very, very filling. The dishes as a whole were a bit on the pricier side. A steak was comparable to fine dining restaurant prices and I can't say that it was that level. On the plus, they didn't charge extra for public holiday service so that helped. The beers were top notch and we experienced excellent service too.
Eat Drink And Be Kerry
It's much bigger than I expected with different levels, private rooms and a loo with a view. I'm talking about The Charming Squire which has taken up residence on the Grey Street side of the Brisbane Convention Centre. It's named after Australia's first brewer, the reputedly charming James Squire and is yet another venture from the Mantle Group who have a series of venues around town including Pig 'N Whistle and Jimmy's on the Mall.
