Review New Shanghai - Brisbane

Pogle
I wanted to try somewhere different and unfortunately very disappointed. Order was: mini pork wonton soup, pork and chive dumplings, crab and pork 'signature' bao and kung pao chicken. The chicken was so rubbery that I thought we had ordered the vegan chicken. Crab and pork bao... As my husband said, it smells like bin juice pork. $70, just on food, no drinks, and we left hungry. I won't be returning. Reply - the time and date is on the receipt in the photo provided - 19.02.22 - 12:09pm

My first time here. I ordered the pork dumplings and pork belly bao. They both tasted so good. 😊

You have to try the pot stickers and the Xio longbao (soupy dim sum), best dumplings in town!! The decor is super nice and the staff is friendly despite how busy they are! I don’t understand other reviews complaining about using QR code or the staff ….there is a line to go there every day and there is a reason for that, it’s amazing!

Whenever we are in the city, we visit New Shanghai to snack on dumplings. Despite all the visits over the years, we have hardly ventured away from dumplings as they have always been exceptional. The decor here is beautiful and the service is efficient. I would recommend trying the Xioalongbao, the pan-fried pork buns and any of the dumplings. I particularly like the shepherd's purse dumplings served with the peanut and chilli sauce. The dessert section has some interesting dishes that are definitely worth exploring as well.

Had all our usual favourites: Xiao Long Bao, Guo Tie, Seng Jian Bao, Wonton and some noodles. Very satisfied with meal.

A place where you order online and pay at the counter, which is pretty convenient if you know what’s on the menu. Good service and atmosphere however the food was average. Perhaps the trick is to come here when really hungry and order a variety of dishes.

We always enjoy the food when we come here. Staples we always order are the soup dumplings (#201) & the new shanghai signature pork & veg noodles (#407) - they are SO good. We always like to try other small dishes too but definitely always coming back for these 2 in particular. Lines can be long to get in but service is pretty quick so you are eating pretty soon after being seated.

I had several dishes. xiolongbao dumplings, drunken chicken, seaweed salad, beef nooudle soup, calamari rings, and prawn dumplings with sesame paste sauce. They were very nice. I recommend their dumplings the most. I visit there whenever I think of xiolongbao.

A rare chance in these WFH days to head into the CBD to run some errands, and took the chance to drop by New Shanghai in Queens Plaza for a feed and to redeem my free birthday dumplings.<br/><br/>We ordered:<br/>* no.201 xiao long bao / steamed pork dumplings (8pc), $10.80<br/>* no.405 zha jiang noodles (with ground pork sauce), $13.60<br/>* no.413 shepherd's purse, shredded pork & rice cake stir fry, $17.80<br/>And for my dumplings I chose<br/>* no.218 prawn dumplings (10pc), $19.50<br/><br/>XLB is pretty much a standing order whenever we eat here - New Shanghai do one of the best we've tried in Brisbane. I also tend to like ordering one of the Shanghai style rice cake dishes as it's rare to find this elsewhere. Everything was really nice; the zha jiang noodles was a good sized serve and had heaps of the meaty sauce, and the prawn dumplings went really well with the accompanying dip which had a bit of chilli in it.<br/><br/>Service wise wasn't as good an experience. We neglected to bring water with us and my son was feeling thirsty so we asked for water twice from two different staff members, and neither resulted in any water. Eventually wifey had finished her meal and went next door to Coles to buy some groceries. She came back with a bottle of water and still no water from the restaurant. We also had some issues/confusion about redeeming the birthday dumplings voucher, resulting in me paying more than I expected to. But that was subsequently sorted out after I wrote to the head office with some feedback. So we'll happily visit again when we're next in town.<br/><br/>PS. Another good thing is they're on the Liven platform, so you can earn 5% of your total spend as Liven rewards. If you're not already using Liven, get $10 free credits to spend when you sign up with my referral code UMQEEC!

Would give it 3.5 if i could. <br/>Female staff was a bit rude to us even though we were friendly to her. Young Male staff however was very sweet and had lot’s of manners. <br/>In terms of food the xia long bao were amazing and so was the fried rice. <br/>Crispy chicken skin was alright, the noodle soup noodles were so soggy, the dumpling soup tasted a bit funny
Lauren Nava
Amazing! Loved it. Been to most around the area and this is definitely one of my faves. Definitely try out.

Conveniently located in the city in Queens Plaza, this restaurant usually has a long line during lunch. Before you enter the restaurant you see people in the kitchen making the xiao long bao. Their signature dish. Most of the food here is decent. Though the service could be improved.

Thank you for the friendly service and for the food.  I recommend visiting this place if you are hungry and looking for a decent place to eat.

We saw the Taro rolls are advertising for 7.9 dollars, and the lady at the counter charged us for 8.9 dollars 😡. I asked whether she typed in wrong at the pos counter, she said it was wrong on the advertisement!!! Do they just charge whatever they want?? Such a fraud!

Saw high review score so we checked this out. Oh dear! The buns are average, the sauce is weird, the entry uneditably sour. However, the worst part is the service. The staff is so unfriendly and robotic. There werent any smiles.

Great food. Wanted to find &#x3C;a href=&#x22;specialero.com.au/&#x22;&#x3E;happy hour near me&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and stumbled upon new shanghai

Dishonest place. Food was OK. Went tonight and order item 221 "Vegetable & Pork wonton soup 12pcs $11.9". Got 10 wontons in soup instead of 12. Questioned the cashier why it was 10 and not 12 as printed on the menu, her reply was that the menu was wrong and it's always been 10, not 12 and I was the first customer who brought this to her attention. I paid $11.90, no point to waste time arguing over 2 wontons. Margin improvment by sleath.

Being in a waiting list for about 4 groups of people before us, we expected something much tastier than we actually got. We ordered rice cake (chef’s recommended), spicy pork noodle, xiao long bao, and wonton soup. All were tasteless for us, compared to what Chinese food restaurant commonly serve. Noodles have a big portion, though, but with plain taste, we hardly enjoyed the food. The Xiao long bao has thick skin and not watery inside. <br/><br/>With this restaurant being so busy, It’s either we expected too much or we ordered the wrong menu. Won’t come again, though.

Pip Ondadip and I initially visited New Shanghai in Ashfield, Sydney and was obviously excited to try it here in Brisbane. The dining was was spacious and vibrant, customer service was also very welcoming and friendly.<br/>We ordered a variety of dishes, ranging from xiao long baos, truffled xiao long bao, pan fried pork buns and truffle pot stickers.<br/>Everything was obviously delicious and the truffle menu is a definite must try!!!!!

Love this place. Always has a line here which just goes to show how popular this restaurant is. Quality dumplings. Very timely too, I ordered and food came out in less than 10 mins! Staff is very accommodating especially when I arrived so late to the restaurant.

<br/>The waiter is extremely rude. Will never come back again. Was given a very small space. Hardly seat properly, asked several times to change the table when space became available, got rejected. Such a shocking poor service.

The pork belly ($22.7) was the highlight of the night. The sweetened soy sauce marinade was excellent and the meat itself was succulent and flavoursome due to the perfect amount of fat. There was also a decent amount of bok choy hidden underneath, which I appreciated. 5/5<br/><br/>The crispy skin chicken ($21.6) would’ve been good if the good parts were consistent. There were some wonderfully tender parts that contrasted beautifully with the skin, but there were also an equal amount of parts that were tough and dry. The sauce helped you swallow them down though. I also just realised that it says “chilli sauce” on the menu but it was pretty much just sweet soy sauce. 3.5/5 <br/><br/>Mapo tofu ($15.7) was very mediocre. The ones we make at home with premade sauce tasted a lot better. There was too much soy sauce, hence the odd dark brown colour when it’s meant to be a vibrant red. There was also barely any mince. 2.5/5<br/><br/>Xiaolongbao ($9.9) & pan fried pork buns ($12.9) were nothing to write home about, but they were good. Never had XLB before so I don’t really have a basis for comparison though. 4/5<br/><br/>There was enough rice in two buckets for five of us to eat until we were bursting. Picture enclosed with cup for scale. <br/><br/>Left the restaurant satisfied and full.

Came here just before 5 to grab a quick bite. Was lucky to discover their had a happy hour menu. So we ordered their pork dumplings that also came with a drink. We ordered a lychee tea drink. Unfortunately after we waited also 20 Min we discovered they had lost our order. But when the food came we did enjoy our meal but was very disappointed with the service.
Vik
Take a bao, the dumplings hit the spot when they're not too busy. Its fantastic if you can get seated before noon and get your orders in quickly. The flavour become a little dull after a while.

Has always been a big favourite due to the consistent quality of the food. However recent visits have been disappointing. Dumplings are still ok, but the main dishes such as the Shanghainese noodles are smaller than usual and haphazardly thrown together. Service hasn't always been great, but it seems to have dropped even lower. Might as well go to the one at the Myer food court.
Yuki N
Food here is tasty and the restaurant has a superb vibe for eating. Highly recommend the iced milk tea here. I think it beats some counterparts of it in Hong Kong tea restaurants. A little expensive though. Watch when you order.

Terrible customer service, being mean to customers and not reasonable to cope with anything happened in the store. they actually do not really care about customers... asking for tap water 3 times n didn’t work, still waiting...too much bad things happened

We headed to New Shanghai for lunch today to celebrate a colleague coming to visit, but had a really poor experience. There was a table available outside, and as a group of 6, we were happy to take it. The service was very slow. In fact, we had to go and find someone to take our order. We asked for table water, but none arrived, so again we had to go in and find someone to help us. The waiter who delivered the water carried the glasses with his fingers inside them! Yeugh. We noticed diners at the tables near us, who arrived after us, started to receive their food. After 30 minutes we still hadn't received anything, so we asked 3 different waiting staff about our order. When someone came out and wrote down our order again, went to check, but didn't return to let us know what was happening, we left hungry and bitterly disappointed as we had to get back to work.

Environment was bad, not child friendly. The air condition was not working well, hot! Service was terrible! Saw a cockroach crawling up the wall, floor and corner are filthy!
FOODIE ADVENTURE
Been to the New Shanghai place in Sydney a few times so l was super happy to know that there was one in Brisbane CBD as well. Great food and great variety of dumplings. Didn't have any issues making a large reservation for 14 people. I do think the service can be slightly nicer but l didn't care too much because l absolutely loved the food. Still so much on the menu to try and l can't wait to go back.<br/><br/>Update 10/05/2019<br/>Disappointed at the service again. Service here has consistently been bordering rude and grumpy. We went during happy hour and it took nearly 20+ to get xiao long bao dumplings. We had to find out what was happening and it seemed like they had lost our ordered but no explanation or apology. Just said further 5 mins. We didn't even get our drinks. When we finaly got the dumplings they won't great. Usually its nice and soupy but even that was lacking. Very disappointed. Downgraded to 2 from my previous 4 rating.

The other week we were invited to sit in on a pairing that involved two very popular and delicious combos… Who can say no to dumplings and alcohol, especially when they are matched this well.I have been addicted to New Shanghai since I had my first Xiao Long Bao from here, then I became addicted to a few more menu items as well ( mainly rainbow beef, and shepherds purse, and jelly fish ❤)

OVERALL<br/><br/>Best soup dumplings in town, great atmosphere and food. Nothing to fault really.<br/><br/>AMBIENCE 5/5<br/><br/>Great atmosphere (see the photos). Really paints the picture of 20th century China. Wall decorations, chairs, table etc all start off an authentic experience<br/><br/><br/>SERVICE 5/5<br/><br/>Lucky we didn’t have to wait, but a queue came up soon after. Service was good, and food came quickly. <br/><br/>PRESENTATION 5/5<br/><br/>The clay pot for the braised pork was pretty nifty, though sort of misrepresented how little the serving was (still acceptable). Dumplings fried looked great, and little soup dumplings in bamboo looked amazing.<br/><br/>TASTE 5/5<br/><br/>Best soup dumplings in town. Fried sticker dumplings also nice and crispy. Braised pork belly highly recommended, so flavoursome and melt in mouth, tasted great with rice. One bowl is actually pretty big.<br/><br/>Pricing although not Sunnybank prices, was on par for city dining as were serving sizes.

Came to New Shanghai at 12pm this is just before the huge line starts forming outside every day before the lunch rush. I ordered the Xiao Long Bao and the Hot n Sour Soup. I have never had Hot n Sour Soup but with my love for spice Vietnamese pho, I was hoping it would be somewhat like that. I received a thick soup with those tiny Chinese prawns, the soup tasted very unusual. It was not to my taste and I wouldn’t order that again. Shortly after my soup I received a big steam basket of dumplings. This was a dream come true. I demolished these fast and they were beautiful. The liquid oozing into your mouth and then biting into the dumpling ... incredible.

Nice food... Friendly but unprofessional service... Very reasonable prices and flavours distinct and fresh. Why is it that good Chinese places do not havegood waiting staff? Or am I stereotyping?

Great experience, love their service. One of the best asian cuisine in this area. Dumplings and noodles are delicious. And their interior is combined old asian style new western. Love that place

Fresh dumplings made on premises are so delicious! May be a bit of a wait depending on how many dumplings you order. Highly recommend their grapefruit drink and their shanghai soup dumplings

The food was fantastic, authentic and reasonably priced. The atmosphere and aesthetic is so nice. The staff are efficient and quick, and the service is great. Would definitely return. Vegetarian steamed dumplings were so nice!

The squirrel fish eaten today is not fresh and there is no correct way to handle the complaint. Bad review! Fortunately, I am just a tourist from China, I do not recommend you to visit.

I come here all the time (since 2015) and I have to say that I keep returning because they serve the best soup dumplings (XLB) in Brisbane. The price has increased from $7.80 when I first started coming to $9.90, but I return because it's still worth it. Much better than Dumpling Republic across the street, and the other food besides soup dumplings are good too.<br/><br/>Personally I really enjoyed the pan fried pork buns (菜肉包), Shanghai mini pork won ton soup (鮮肉小雲吞), the braised beef noodles (紅燒牛肉湯麵), crispy chicken noodle soup, Shanghai stir fried noodles, slow braised pork belly, and any salted egg yolk dish. I also really like the soy milk here. I think it's really good - definitely made through Chinese methods, so the taste is different to what you would find in the supermarket. Reminds me of the days when I lived in China. :)<br/><br/>The staff are all native Chinese speakers, and the service is quick and friendly. They've also gotten rid of their payment surcharge on cards, so you're paying for what you ordered unless you're using an Amex. My only point of criticism (which is out of their control tbh) is that if you're seated too far into the restaurant, there is no cell service.<br/><br/>Overall, this is always the restaurant I head to when I'm craving Chinese food. Highly recommended!

Came here for lunch cause I was in the mood for something hot on a cold winters day. Ordered the “Xiao Long Bao” (steamed pork dumplings) ($9.90), Pork & Chinese Cabbage Dumplings ($12.70), Shanghai Mini Prawn & Pork Wonton Soup ($14.90) and Hot & Sour Soup with Shredded Pork and Tofu ($6.40). For drinks, ordered the Iced Lemon Tea ($6) and the Peach Green Tea ($6). <br/><br/>The “Xiao Long Bao” is a definite must try! I found that this signature dish of 8 pieces of dumplings was a good amount and it was so flavourful with the soup inside (must be cautious as it is very hot soup inside!). I found that the Pork & Cabbage Dumplings were quite average, they provided soy sauce which added taste but there was nothing special in terms of flavour. The Shanghai Mini Prawn & Pork Wonton was delicious! This dish had a very fair portion (with about 7 pieces of small Wontons) and the soup had a good balance of taste (the tofu and shredded pork added a bit more flavour). The Hot & Sour Soup was a bit disappointing, it tasted quite average and it wasn’t hot at all or very sour (when compared to other places). The drinks were very nice, the Peach Green Tea was definitely my favourite! The taste was balanced well between the green tea and the sweetness and fragrance of the peach. The iced lemon tea was tasty as well but they put a lot of lemon (great for a hot day though as it was very refreshing!), it was a bit sweet but the lemon was too overpowering.<br/><br/>This place has opened for awhile and I was surprised that this place still has a lot of people having to queue up to get a seat. Inside, it was very big and spacious. I like the atmosphere because it seems like a typical Asian restaurant (red and black themed) with lightly dimmed lighting, fancy framed mirrors around and wooden antique stools and tables. I was very happy with the staff and service! The service was quick and the staff seemed very organised and knew the menu well (they are good to ask for recommendations). <br/><br/>

I wish I could give half stars.. this place is a solid 3.5. Let me start by saying that I don’t really like Shanghai Dumplings and I don’t eat much meat... however I do love meat broth. So I drink the broth that’s encapsulated by a well made skin and give the inside of the pork ones to my companions who loved the extra meat. The boys however love the dumplings. <br/><br/>The crispy thicker pan fried baos I did the same with but I love most things that are fried and flavoursome. Everyone loved these. <br/><br/>They also ordered some pork and prawn dumplings which were probably at the bottom of the rung compared to the first two.<br/><br/>I ate probably 7 of the 10 prawn wontons with chilli oil and peanut sauce and really enjoyed these. Great prawn flavour and chunks as well as the wonton skins being perfectly cooked. <br/><br/>We asked for a chilli sauce and the one the gave was delicious. <br/><br/>The only downside was having to wait 20 minutes for a table and I don’t know if you’ve noticed.. I’m super impatient and because we were seated outside... we did have to go inside to ask for more tea. All in all the food came out quickly, 3 of the 4 dishes were pretty good and they’re in the entertainment book which takes 25% off which is a nice bonus. <br/><br/>I know my family will be back here for sure. <br/>If you like Xiao Long Bao and you live in Brisbane this is one of the better places.<br/><br/>#dumplings #wontons #monicamarkle #monvsbrisbane

Xiao long bao!!<br/><br/>The kitchen is a big feature of this restaurant in the Queens Plaza food court with a large window so you can see the staff making dumplings. We tried the hot and sour soup and a Shanghai fried noodle dish which were delicious but the highlight of our meal was the xiao long bao (soup dumplings). We tried the classic pork and the pork and crab versions and they were both amazing - flavoursome, good dumpling skin and cooked to perfection. The service was pretty good too - we didn't have to wait too long to get in and once we had ordered, the food came out quite quickly.

Xiao lom bao - all broken, pork dumplings forgettable, Shanghai noodles had no meat. Won't be back, very disappointing. Wife wasn't impressed either

I ordered a Pork and chinese cabbage dumpling from here as a take away<br/>there were 10 small dumplings<br/>tasted good<br/>but took more than 10 minutes to make it<br/>

Mum and Daughter date night in the city. No.1 daughter had been wanting to check out this place for a while. We got here around 6ish and the place was already busy. We were very promptly taken to our booked table. I loved that the menu also served as your placemat.<br/>We ordered Xiao Long Bao, pork belly steamed buns and Crispy skin chicken withe noodles and a pot of Jasmine tea.<br/>The pork belly steamed buns were the highlight of the night. Everything was so tasty and can't wait to go again.
@lydiaeatsbrisbane
Visited New Shanghai which I would say is very similar to the Taiwanese restaurant Din Tai Fung. The menu is very similar as are the flavours. We ordered the drunken chicken cold Shanghai noodles which was very tasty - a large portion of chicken, cucumber and noodles. The pork and prawn wonton soup was quite ordinary. The crispy chicken with a garlic and chilli sauce was very tasty however, the sauce did not seem to taste like chilli at all. Our favourite dish was the salted egg crispy tofu which was so unique and very tasty. There was a lot of salted egg flavour covering the tofu which was very soft on the inside but very crisp on the outside. This is a dish I would definitely reorder. The xiao long bao was very ordinary - nothing special but still very tasty. I think the wrapping skin is a bit thicker which was good as we had none of the dumplings break so none of the soup on the inside spilled. <br/>The restaurant is quite busy from 5:30-7:30 so bookings are taken then but we had not booked and our table of 4 was seated within 15 minutes on a Thursday night.
Lily
Had made a booking through Zomato which was confirmed for Friday but on arrival was notified that nothing was noted and that they don't take bookings on Fridays. Still, the staff accommodated us at a shared table.<br/><br/>Ordered the pork dumplings (xiao long bao) and mini wontons. Portion sizes for value was ok but is pricey to eat until full if not ordering noodles. No split bill available.

Love coming here for authentic dumplings, hot and sour soup and green beans with fried rice. Would give 5* but sometimes they forget to come and take your order, especially if you sit outside. Don't let that deter you though! Also order the Taro milkshake. It's the best.

One phrase: best pan fried pork buns, period. These gems have juicy fillings, then crispy fried skin. Out of all sheng-jian-bao I've had in China and here this would be the tastiest. Otherwise we tried it's shaolong which is on par with Din Tai Fung, radish pastry which is slightly too deep fried for my liking, and wonton in chilli oil which is not as good as Din Tai Fung. But for it's buns alone, this place deserves a 4.5.
Mollie DB
Hot authentic mix of Chinese foods, won ton soup was a nice consistency and volume and seafood hot pot was delicious (although I prefer mine without tofu) Staff were abit rushed and we had to share a table with 4 other people even though it wasn’t extremely busy. Good if you need a quicker dining out meal but not for a special occasion or special occasion sit down meal.

New Shanghai dumplings are my favorite lunch, I regularly go there with friends, I think I have tried everything on menu the pork steamed buns are especially my favorites very yum. Sorry mother but I think they are way better than yours :-)

New Shanghai has become one of my regular after uni/work dinner joints. The food is consistently delicious and is generally served quite quickly. I ordered the following:<br/><br/>Xiao long bao (8pcs) - very tasty, we always decide to order a serve (forgot to get a picture of these!). <br/><br/>Crispy skin chicken served with steamed rice, garlic & chilli sauce - a new dish that we tried, the sauce was delicious and the chicken was well-cooked. <br/><br/>Passion fruit tea - this iced tea is a favourite of mine, very sugary but always worth it. <br/><br/>The menu is reasonably priced, the decor is pretty funky and the restaurant itself is conveniently located in Queens Plaza. Definitely a great place to check out for dinner (they also have a happy hour earlier in the afternoon).

The xiao long bao (esp. the crab meat ones) and the wontons in chili oil, peanut etc sauce are amazing!!! We go back for them all the time. Pretty much every other dish we have tried here (meatball soup, pancake, fried rice) is decent, too. A solid place for Shanghainese cuisine all around.<br/><br/>Service can unfortunately be a bit hit and miss - some waiters are good but others can be very slow, and a few even seem like they are trying to ignore as many customers as they can. Point of note: they also close very early on Sunday (all chairs up on tables and lights off by 8pm - not necessarily a negative, but worth noting). Prices are a bit on the higher side for Chinese food.<br/><br/>None of that stops us from going back though. Love the XLB. :)

Really don't understand how the rating is so high! The dumplings were so big!! And the veggie dumplings had a weird flavour.<br/>Ordered the stuffed taro, taste wasn't too bad, it was the texture which was soft and off putting.<br/>Shame the dumplings weren't nice as they are all hand made to order.
CJ Brisbane
By far some o the best dumplings around. Freshly made with those little bursts of juice you get when you bite into each dumpling. There seems to be que everytime we go but it moves very quickly. The one dish that we always get with our dumplings is the crispy golden tofu with salted egg yolk. Highly recommended👌.
Richard O'Grady
Worst service ever. Rushed, rude, unattended.. signature dishes were horrible, oily, heavy, lacking flavor. Hot and soyr soup wasn't hot.. Suggest you try elsewhere.
FoodPlease
I LOVE the dumplings here and I ask for the peanut and chilli sauce on the side because I'm vegetarian and the veggie ones don't come with it but man it's delicious.<br/>Also the peach green tea is to die for.<br/><br/>My only problem with this place is that they don't have more vegetarian options.
Quality! It Shouldnt Be That Hard! Love A Wonderful Mouth Full Of Wholesome FOOD!
We came here recently and it was a bit of a let down! There onion pancakes had no taste it hardly had any spring onion. The veggie dumplings where very nice however theY didn’t have much fillings in them... <br/>my gd order stir fry beef with a steam bun. She was so shocked when it came out she thought it was going to be a stir fri with veggies ect not make it your self lots of little buns.... this is added on to my original review from about 2 years ago... <br/><br/><br/>am so happy that New Shanghai has arrived in Brisbane Iv been to the one in Ashfield in sydney, <br/><br/>Iv only had takeaway vegetarian Dumplings, they where yummy, it's very busy in the restaurant I love the fact everything is made fresh and from scratch! Dumplings are the best!<br/><br/>The crab and Pork dumpling xiao long bao was not the nicest I found them very strong tasting and t had crab shell though it :-(
Chensha
Loved the pan fried pork buns, very authentic flavour and delicious soup inside! Super fast service, the food arrived 2 minutes after we ordered. Not exaggerating!! Had to ask the waitresses for water but otherwise, would love to come back for some wontons and noodles :)

New Shanghai offers up Shanghainese dishes (surprise!) in both Brisbane and Sydney. We were pleasantly surprised to receive an invitation to try their new menu, so headed to Queens Plaza in the CBD on a Friday evening. It was packed, with quite a line outside, and while we were lucky to get to bypass the queue, one would certainly be well advised to make a booking in advance if a weekend visit was intended. There is the option of watching chefs fold and craft dumplings while you are waiting if you haven’t planned ahead of time though.

Great, pretty authentic (though quite expensive) Chinese food. Service is ok - we made a booking for 4 over the phone a couple of days before, but they wanted to seat us outside (makeshift-looking tables near Coles) instead of inside. Granted, they might have had a couple of reservations that Monday night, but it was only at our insistence to be seated inside that we were told we could wait for 10 minutes to get a small table for 4. Tables were also a little small and the space was somewhat cramped. Apart from that, decor was pretty cool and the food came very quick.<br/> We had (L-R, clockwise): Mapo tofu, snow pea shoots, Xiaolong bao, green onion pancake, crispy chicken with noodle, rainbow beef, steamed Lion's Head soup.

Classic Shanghainese service food and decor, truly an authentic experience and I cannot stress enough how good the food is here - strong flavours and generous servings and at low prices. An extensive menu and good Chinese lager honestly make this one of my go to's in Brisbane. Food and service is fast and quick. I spent less than $100 on me and my partner including drink.
Vina
Nice place, nice food and nice staff. The pan fried dumpling is very recommended. The meat filling is so tasty. Others are okay but not as impressive as the fried dumpling. This place is always busy espc at dinnertime. But they are fast.
The Food Oracle
I've been wanting to try this well reviewed restaurant for a long time. I've heard stories of their legendary dumplings and uber cool atmosphere. However, I was disappointed by my own experience. <br/><br/>The first problem was likely our own. I went here with B, it really should have been a larger group. All the serves of dumpling are quite large (6+ pieces) so as a couple there is only so much belly space so you end up only trying a few dishes. <br/>The next problems were the restaurant's. We tried a few dishes and none were impressive. The pot stickers were very doughy, there was no broth in them, the filling was lacklustre. The spring onion pancakes were mostly flour, there were minimal no spring onions in them. They were just boring doughy pancakes.  The pork belly steamed buns were really unbalanced, a huge bun (and not the bun I expected) which two tiny pieces of pork belly with some hoisin sauce and a slice of cucumber. The pork and chive dumplings were not bad, the filling was quite tasty, but the dough was way too thick and they looked like dumplings I would have made myself. There were no beauty prizes being awarded that day. <br/><br/>Service was fine, the atmosphere and decor was very cool, but the food was sub par. <br/><br/>Also, I didn't like that there is no bowl to mix your soy and vinegar.

I've been here before and it wasn't great. But I thought I'd give it another try. First of all, I waited 5 minutes till someone saw my at the desk to be seated and then made me wait even longer. Even though there were plenty of tables available. Staff are rude and disinterested. I ordered lukewarm and sour soup and tasteless yangchou fried rice or so they must've heard me say that. In that case it was perfect. My soup was "perfectly" lukewarm and my rice perfectly tasteless. I asked for a glass of water 3 times. $17.00 not well spent, actually $18.00, because they charge a dollar for EFTPOS transactions. It surprises me how busy this place is during lunch, because I don't see it.

The food was amazing and definitely decently priced, no wonder there's a Lin every time I walk past. I loved the soup dumplings and fried pan dumplings too, I need to go back!! I even left my backpack there and they kept it for me until I came back

My first visit to the New Shanghai franchise and I had a good experience but not for the ones who are in a hurry. <br/><br/>+'ves<br/>Ambience and service was great.<br/>I wanted to try a seafood dish and was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the Shanghai Stir Fry Seafood noodle.<br/>Dish was served in good time<br/><br/>-'ves<br/>Not for the ones who are in a hurry. Had to queue for 20 mins to sit down<br/>A bit pricy<br/>Quantity not worth the price<br/><br/>Would defo go again to try different dishes

Its name might be New Shanghai, but nostalgia fills every corner of this restaurant - a vintage bike is parked at the sparkly clean glass frontage where you can watch chefs in uniform folding dumplings, old posters of 1930s Shanghai girls plastered at the shopfront as well as the bar and underneath your feet, a cobblestone paved floor that transports you to the alleyways in Shanghai’s old residential areas… New Shanghai does the theme well.

Dear foodosphere: let it be known I like me some dough-wrapped snacks. Today in the form of XLB dumplings. As these soupey, hand pleated morsels of delight swelled & burst, so did my heart. (But you know, without the soup part.) The soft, thin casing held a light yet satisfying pork broth.<br/><br/>There were other dishes this lunchtime - Shanghai noodle soup, crispy tofu with salted egg yolk & veges with oyster sauce. These were also very good.<br/><br/>I could watch the deft hands at work out the front crafting the precious dumpling parcels of joy allllll day. But sadly I had to return to work.

I am obsessed with new shanghai's xiao long bao. I love how you can see the workers making the dumplings/noodles through the big windows at the front. The dumpling dough is cooked very well and it's not too thin or too thick. The pork filling is generous and very flavoursome. I also really enjoy their pork and chive dumplings which come with an interesting sauce with chopped peanuts and chive oil.

Update: Came to try their crab and pork Xiao Long Bao. The skin was not too thin, but there were a few holes in a couple of the dumplings, so the soup had started to spill out, much to my disappointment. Flavour wise, is definitely go back for the pork Xiao Long Bao(which I tried on a previous visit) as the broth is much tastier. <br/>Tried the drunken chicken cold noodles and stir fried noodles, both of which were really good. The chicken was really smooth and moist, the noodles springy and the sauce was a really good mix of vinegar and sesame. I'll definitely come back again to try out their 小笼包.

The best dumplings in brisbane. The shepherd's purse, pot stickers, xiao long bao and sautĂŠed string beans with shrimp and garlic are all must-try. Gets really busy on a Friday/Saturday, but well worth the wait as it's all hot and fresh and so good!

I feel sorry that I visited this place. Though yes, since it was around Chinese new year, it was very beautifully decorated. Check the attached picture. Too dark though. :(<br/><br/>The food is probably the worst I tried in Brisbane. I really expected good things here. I tried their papaya and fungi dish something this is a traditional sweet of China but I didn't like it. My Chinese friend added it doesn't taste like what it does in China. :(<br/><br/>Apart from that i tried a variety of their dishes. Amongst those dumplings were a lot better. Everything else was a complete disappointment. :(

My boyfriend and I had new Shanghai for dinner about three weeks ago. It was a quiet afternoon. We ordered a glass of soy milk that took forever to deliver, not to mention it was disturbing having to watch our soymilk sitting at the bar and we could not get it ourselves while literally sat right next to it. <br/>The crispy chicken with noodles was worth going back for, it had the best sauce to pair. The pan fried dumplings was nice and crispy. <br/>Lastly We had the wontons in chilli oil with peanut and sesame sauce. It used to be sweet, mild and easy to eat. This dish used to be my favourite, but not anymore. It would be a really good dish for people who likes spicy food. The portion was decent and 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶it is extremely spicy🌶🌶🌶🌶. I asked for some more sesame sauce which the waiter tried to charge me for until explained it was so different and way more spicy than what we had in our previous visits. <br/>I know it might sound subjective, but I gotta say It was way way toooo spicy for both of us. our tolerance to spicy food is average, but not that we can't eat any spicy food. <br/>We decided to give it another chance tonight. We ordered it for takeaway. Again, it was so spicy that I didn't enjoy it at all. 😵😵😵<br/><br/>Food was above average, experience could have been better. Hope they can make the spicy wonton less spicy.

I’ve been here twice lately – it’s that good. So good, that the friend who came with me the first time, she’s been three times! All within the space of a week. On our first visit we had pork xiao long bao with the pork and Chive steamed dumplings and both were incredible. Juicy and fresh – you can’t get enough of them! The shepherds purse and pork wontons with chilli, peanut and sesame sauce were different, I had heard through UrbanList to give them a whirl. The chilli and the peanut sauce are a unique combination and one to be tried for yourself!

This place always has a line out the front but it is worth the wait! The dumplings here especially the soup ones are awesome. Great variety of dumplings, noodle dishes and sides.
Elle
The pan fried pork buns tasted great, and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of soup inside each bun. While these buns and the soup dumplings were very flavoursome, the same cannot be said for the braised noodle soup which was incredibly bland and watery. The atmosphere of the restaurant was quite pleasant and the waitresses were very quick and efficient.

On my friend's recommendation we came here for lunch, and we came early to avoid the long queues that begin before 12pm. <br/>We ordered xiao long bao, pan fried pork buns and pan fried pork dumplings. They were all done quite well (the pan fried pork dumplings were slightly overcooked but I liked them that way), and were tasty with the chilli sauce, soya sauce and vinegar.<br/>The xiao long bao had a nice thin skin, and the pan fried pork buns had an excellent crispy base. The fillings for all three dishes were flavourful.<br/>Overall, a very satisfying lunch.

Delicious dumplings, fried rice and crispy chicken. Service is a let down, inconsistent and not as attentive as it should be. Food comes out at different times.

I've been having lunch at New Shanghai quite frequently over the last couple of years with work colleagues and I LOVE IT, they have the best xiao long bao that I have been able to find in Brisbane (albeit I stopped looking after I found these ones). The staff are very friendly and fast, and even with a huge lineup out the door you are still able to be in and out within the hour :)
Lauren Green
It's mesmerising to watch the staff deftly make such delicate dumplings through the font window, go inside and be greeted by the smell of said delicious dumplings cooking. I found the food to be pretty good, but not my favourite. The serves are very large so to do proper dim sum style eating you need to bring a lot of friends (I think a group of 6 or 8 would work best)

For the first time in a decade, we decided to go low budget with our Valentines date. After considering a meal from Subway after getting off work at 8 pm, I decided we go some place where we can sit down to a meal. So New Shanghai it was that night. It was less busy than usual and we managed to snag our own table on our arrival (there's usually a wait and sharing tables is a common arrangement). I had my favorite noodles with toasty sesame oil, salty dried shrimp, and scorched scallions. This dish comes with a chicken broth, which somehow always seems lukewarm. We had steaming hot xiao long bao which is always well made and filled generously with broth. Excellent with sharp vinegar. Too bad they don't have the acidic red kind with shredded ginger. The clams weren't spectacular (measly tiny pieces that were obviously not live) but we knew that. A concession to satisfy our craving for clams in clam-less Brisbane. The jellyfish was very nice. It was extended with shredded turnips, but somehow, I do not feel cheated. The dish was cold, crunchy, juicy, and salted well. We also had soup with pork and shepherd's purse wontons. The broth was the same as the one served with my noodles but this was served hot. All in all, our Valentines date cost less than 2 main courses in a fancy restaurant. And we had no room for dessert.

This is my absolute favourite dumpling place in Brisbane. We go at least once a month. It's always busy but don't be turned off by the line out front it moves fairly quickly. But to avoid it we line up before they open to be in first. The restaurant is packed in tight with tables and stools/chairs so not a fancy place to sit and chat but good to get more people through quickly.<br/><br/><br/>Staff can be hard to get a hold of because it's so busy. We have been there so much we have regular dishes and order as soon as they seat us before the staff leave. <br/><br/>Favourite:<br/>- xiao long bao<br/>- spring onion pancake<br/>- pan fried pork buns<br/>- pork and chive dumplings <br/>- Shanghai stir fries noodles with pork & vegetables <br/>- Yangzhou fried rice <br/><br/>We order a few things to have some variety and take the left overs home. Note you have to pay for take away containers (20 cents I think). <br/><br/>Reasonably priced. I have seen the review noting a cockroach in oil, we have never had any issues with the cleanliness of the restaurant, anything in our food and have never been sick.
Alison Read
First visit here required us to wait in a line for about 5 minutes before being shown to our table. The waiter bought menus and left us to peruse them. We chose garlic cucumber, chicken rice cakes, seafood hokkein noodles and pork dumplings. My companion and I also bought a soft drink each. The wait for our food was brief. All meals were delicious and the only criticism I have is that the garlic cucumber looked like it had been cut up by a toddler or chewed on before serving! The taste was still great. Highly recommended.
Michelle Wang
The hot and sour soup is basically a bottle of vinegar. Smells awful. Was only $5 but still not worth the price if cant eat it. Had to get something else anyway.
Miss Pedantic
Easily the worst dumplings I've ever eaten. My family have never before left so much food on the table uneaten. Just awful. I have no idea how this place rates as well as it does. I feel I just wasted a meal.
🍴
I come here about three times a month, sometimes more. I usually order Pot Stickers, Pan Fried Pork Buns and Xiao Long Bao. I find the Pot Stickers and Pan Fried Pork Buns are fresher when the restaurant isn't busy (i.e. generally any time that's not 11:45am-1pm). It seems they keep making the Pan Fried Pork Buns during peak time even before orders come in, so they come out hot but not as crisp. Still delicious though. I dislike boiled dumplings so would like to see more steamed dumplings on the menu. The steamed vegetable dumplings are good but not better than the before listed three dishes. Lychee green tea also goes down well with the dumplings, though is overpriced in comparison to bubble tea shops. Service is a little lacking and not a fan of the shared tables. Also recommend they start using table numbers, as there has been mix ups with which table gets orders and would also save the hassle of describing the table location when paying at the register. I wish there was a New Shanghai on the Southside as I hate accessing the CBD.
Janice
Been there countless time. The food was better when they just open. But now the price gone up a lots and the portion are less, table always dirty and bad customers service.
Matty D
Authentic Shanghainese food at an affordable price.<br/><br/>Reminds me of the legendary Shanghainese restaurants in Ashfield. <br/><br/>The xiao long baos are good not great but given we are in Brisbane. This is amazing.
Ricco
Worst service ever. Feels like you dining at a gestapo<br/> restaurant. The staff all seem not wanting to be there! The food ordered came sporadically. As for the food, bland and tasteless would best describe what was dished out. <br/>
Hungrygirl
Although the line out the door may be off putting, it moves quite quickly so give it a chance. These are definitely the best dumplings in the CBD and the fact you can watch them make them in the shopfront window is a great touch. Service can be a little delayed because they are always so busy but I continue to go back because the food is so good. I wish there was more than one around the city. I would recommend the xiao long bao, beef and coriander dumplings and the milk tea.
DianaW
After reading the previous review about the cockroach it's making me regret visiting!! I had  the vegetarian dumplings, they make them in the front of house where you can watch the process whilst waiting for a table. I always vowed never to wait for a table at any restaurant so visited when they were not so busy (which is very rare) usually afternoons late in the day.
Luke Topp
My partner and I go to this place quite often until about a month ago. We usually get some dumplings with the soup dumplings to start. Last time we went plates were dirty and staff were quite rude. The food also took an extra long time to come and the restaurant was quiet. We probably will not go back.
Eat-outer
We used to visit NSH regularly until few years ago when we found a cockroach swimming in chilli oil in one of our regular dishes which then got picked off the plate by a staff with a napkin. She then stood there waiting for us to continue eating. When we refused to and put our chopsticks down, she asked if we wanted the rest to take away. We were stunned by the question but politely refused. Concept of hygiene was clearly wrong. It was not okay. That was our experience of the place and we have never gone back there since.<br/><br/>I have submitted many reviews on Zomato back when it was still Urbanspoon but only this particular one for NSH went missing without a notification.<br/><br/>Since NSH is so popular amongst city dwellers, I hope they have been paying more attention to food safety and staff training or it could cause serious food poisoning to large crowd.
Alex K
There is always a line for lunch. Great place if you're after good quality dumplings. They all taste amazing. Services is quick and easy. The Xiao Long Bao however doesn't taste anything like in Shanghai which is a disappointment.
Nessa Tan
Great food and reasonable prices, location is also really convenient, service from a particular waitress was horrible though, apart from that, it was great, favorite dishes were the xiao long bao and the beef noodle soup
AEM
I came here with friends while walking around Queen Street, and saw the chefs making dumplings in the window and thought me must try it. We had to wait about 15mins for a seat but the food was certainly worth it. We ordered the salt and pepper calamari, pork and chive dumplings, pork special dumplings and the vegetable dumplings. For drinks we order the Virgin Pina Cola and the Cinderella mocktail. The food was absolutely delicious and came out quick once we had ordered. The dumplings had a soup inside along with the meat which added so much flavour. Seriously the best dumplings I have eaten.
Lambo Blair
Had lunch at New Shanghai today and I have to say very nice food and super quick service. We ordered a few different dumplings, spinach, spring rolls, crispy skinned chicken w rice and also some jasmine tea. All was thoroughly enjoyed and very tasty. I will definitely be back again. Also very reasonably priced.
Robbie Neller
This place offers a reasonable experience at an as to be expected price. Quite a lengthy wait to get it, a reasonable ambience considering the location. I would not rush back but would recommend to anybody wanting some reliable Chinese food.
Rebecca
An old staple of mine in Sydney this one just didn't hit the mark. The marinated pork ribs weren't with the sticky sauce I remember and the Xiao long Bao were sticky and chewy
James
Really enjoyed the experience here. The dumplings were delicious and the service is quick. A great night that is highly recommended and looking forward to going back soon.
Casey Whight
Worst dining experience ever - the staff were rude and rushed our whole dining experience. The food was rubbish!! Ordered Singaporean noodles with pork and vegetables only to receive a plate of noodles with 5 pieces of bokchoy and 1/3cup shredded pork. I would never recommend this place to anyone.
Izj
only dumplings are impressive. other dishes like the duck and wanton are too far from the flavor of real Shanghai style.<br/>but if you haven't had those in China before, you may not be able to tell the difference anyway.<br/>so for customers from China, i recommend you try their xiaolong only
Fiona Yee
Really loved the Yangzhou fried rice, the pan fried pork buns and especially the xiao long bao! There's always a long queue, but it's definitely worth the wait.
Live
Their 小笼包 and 红烧肉 are definitely the best. I don't think New Shanghai is expensive at all. However, their 炸酱面was a bit disappointing. Overall, not a bad place to try out Chinese cuisine. The only thing bad about the place is that there's no service inside so you can't use your phone.
Chandrew
Is this Myer centre outlet. Don't let this little brother of Queens Plaza franchise go by easily. Xio long Bao. Pork. Panfried if u live to eat and not eat to live. Reminiscent of Shanghai pilgrimage that Bourdain led us. English menu here though. Nip the top suck the juices and eat with some mandatory juice on said face.
N&M
The only reason we stopped by this food court restaurant was because we were starving and the menu was decently appealing. Our orders were quickly taken, and within 10 minutes, we had our meals, which included pork belly, fried rice noodles, and steamed buns. Whilst the pork belly and noodles were average (but good for a food court), the buns were just little mouthfuls of joy. Well worth a few minutes to stop by and grab a little moment of happiness.
Roxie
I've been this place for a couple of times. The signature dish, xiaolongbao, is definitely standing out. The other types of dumplings are also very special and well cooked. However, some of the Chinese dishes, which severed cold, are not very tasty. The tables are set a little crowded.

Love the atmosphere in this place. I feel as if I'm in a Chinese street. Buns and dumplings in this restaurant are simply phenomenal. The pan fried pork buns are tasty, soft, and crunchy and is a definite must-try! XO sauce fried rice is also sensational, delicious and balanced. I definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Betty & Jason
The dumplings here are always amazing and flavoursome! I love the shepherds purse with chilli and peanut oil and definitely recommend it! Of course the xiao long Bao and fried pork buns are a must have every time! The calamari is too salty and soggy so it's definitely a miss, but that's to be expected at a dumpling restaurant. The table was too wobbly but the service was quick and easy!
Natalie
We enjoyed our night at the New Shanghai. I was initially concerned when I saw a large queue of people waiting to go into the restaurant. We didn't wait long at all as the service was quick and efficient! We got to eat delicious pork buns, dumplings and noodles. I enjoyed the atmosphere as well.

Greatest  xiao long bao in brisbane! im not exaggerating, its juicy, flavoursome  and tender!  Great service and price. they wont disappoint you................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

I've been to New Shanghai in a couple of cities now and each time it is an awesome experience with some of the tastiest dumplings you'll find anywhere. Great value for money which will leave you extremely satisfied

In the last several weeks, my friend and I have been to New Shanghai three times. However, upon each occasion we have been told that there are no vegetarian dumplings. So imagine that you have spent 20 minutes picking menu items and getting excited only to be told that your favourite dish isn't available, on 3 consecutive occasions. As my friend is a vegetarian and it is the dumplings that bring us there, we have no choice but to leave as it would be unfair for only one person to eat. The last time it happened I voiced my disappointment, however it was met with utter indifference. The waitresses/waiters often point to meat dishes on the menu and say that they are able to do them without meat, which is a pretty weak suggestion. As well, we must insist that we came for the dumplings. Why not advertise that the dumplings are subject to availability? Come on NS, at least say sorry when you up... 3 times. I would give 0/5 if I could simply because I didn't even get to experience it. <br/>
The Tasty Plate
New Shanghai is one of my favorite places to eat in the City. It does get very busy at lunch time, so I would suggest getting there right on 12:00pm or after 1:30pm. They now also have a take away New Shanghai in the Myer Centre which has a good selection of options available. My top 4 dishes from New Shanghai are: <br/><br/>1. Shepherds purse and pork wontons with chilli oil, peanut and sesame sauce<br/>2. Steamed Vegetarian Dumplings <br/>3. Salt and Pepper Calamari <br/>4. Sauteed Spinach and garlic
Posh
cheap and healthy-ish xiao long bao (steamed pork dumplings) for lunch ($7.8 for 8), but the meat fillings were way too salty! Too much seasoning!
Debbie Pham
One of my favourite places to dine if I'm craving dumplings or pan fried pork buns filled with soup. I have visited this place a few times and the food has always come fresh. The price is average and not too dear. Service is average, if not, a little on the negative side as some waiters don't speak fluently- so they're not very 'chatty friendly', also, when it gets busy, prepare to share tables with other people.... for me, I'm willing to put aside these details because of my love for their soup dumplings and pork buns
Alex An
Really really bad. Serve the used tea leaves for new customer, really disgustin.Ask for a change, throw a tea pot to your face and nothing change, and threating for extra charge.<br/><br/>Wonton uncooked. Stir fry pork has a funny taste.<br/>Been to New Shanghai Sydney lots times, This one Strongly not recommended.
Reynaldo
It was a decent experience. We came 5.30 to avoid the queue. Ordered pork n chive dumpling which was good unfortunately it came after the main dish. The crispy skin chicken was nice and crispy. The soy garlic chilli sauce was also good. Mapo tofu was decent. Unfortunately the rice was hard to swallow
Tastytreat
I've always wanted to visit. I'm on holidays atm so checking a lot of places off my list.<br/>Good sweet corn & crab soup. I always have a soft spot for it. Not brilliant. But decent.<br/>The dumplings are crispy bottomed & very succulent. <br/>A bit expensive as they didn't seem to do served of 4. We were drinking so it could have been lacking of attention on our part.
AHN
Had a good night at the New Shanghai. Food started coming after 3minutes of ordering. 2nd time at New Shanghai but I am sure it was nicer last time. Definitely had better dumplings than this place before but none better than this place in Brisbane so far.
Angel Nguyen
I've been here a few times .The dumplings are very tasty!! I especially like the ones with the peanut butter sauce, and the all time popular pan-fried mini soup baos. The price range is pretty exy for dumplings but standard for the location.
AnitaOnChi
Everytime we come to New Shanghai... There are three key dishes we always never fail to order: the Xiao Long Bao, Deep Fried Pork Buns, and the picture attached, prawn wonton tossed in chilli and peanut sauce (it's not actually that spicey) and without fail we are always left happy and giddy. The only reason this place has lost a bit of points from us is because of its service (employees look like they're there because they have to, they don't seem like they care)
XeaTs
It's always busy here so be prepared to wait in line! My all time favourite has to be the Crispy tofu and salted egg yolk. I don't know anywhere else that serves this but it is a must try! The stir fried rice and noodles are very oily, and although they say there is meat in these dishes, there is very little included. I would only go back for the tofu and dumplings.
Dan Ricketts
Average. Would not return. Ordered the 'Recommended' Satay beef and vegetables. Received a plate full of satay vegetable and very little beef. In addition, the flavour was weak and watery. We also tried the crispy chicken, which was dry and the beef dumplings which were ok. The Virgin Pina Colada was actually quite nice, however it was mostly ice. Overall not a great experience. Would not recommend.
Theitalianfoodie
This place is great!! Very busy at lunchtime but so worth waiting. I love how it's set out like you are actually sitting in the street in Shanghai and also love how the little lady's are making the dumplings behind a the window for you to watch. I would highly recommend ordering dumplings and the sticky pork belly.
Esquirefoodie
Love this place!!! The food is always on par. There can be a bit of a wait to get seated but once your seated and ready to go it is worth it. I am hooked on the fried pork dumplings till this day 😋
Jeon Kyung
I have been occasionally eaten here with my friends for the past 2-3 years. Always love the Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings). They also have great main dishes and a decent drink menu too. The cost isn't decent for what you get :)
Ronnielui2003
Cashier, please be polite!. Have been to this restaurant twice due to the promotional deal from entertainment book. Average dishes are over-priced, Xiaolongboa is just ok not to mention the one from "Ding Tai Fung".<br/>It happened twice that the cashier was so impolite. First time, she said in a very rude manner that they don't accept American Express Card but I pointed to the menu where indicates "American Express is welcome", no apologies! Second time, she gave me the wrong bill of 6 people but we only have 3 so the amount was far out of my expectation. However, there was no apologise after she found it was wrong and showed impatience to my queries on the bill.<br/>Hey! Please be noted that you are not the only place that I can have really authentic homey Shanghainese food in Brisbane.......<br/>Foodie is alway clever and fair!
Molly Siu
nice dumplings and very reasonable price. Not a romantic place for couple, but if you want some real Chinese dumplings and atmospher, here is the place.
Davski
Not overly impressed with New Shanghai. I was told so many good things that I may of expected to much, the food was bland, the staff didn't seem interested in serving us and it was very busy. My wife and I felt the whole experience discomforting.
Emma Stargatt
Prawn dumplings were very floury and Hardly warm, not to mention the staff I believe don't want business and try to Ignore that your sitting waiting to be served I felt sad and unwanted. Twice I have been here now, I tried to give a second chance because I hear such a good wrap about it.. I waisted my money.
Lixian Ow
Pork dumpling and rice cake are good.. Shanghai stir fried noodle with seafood is a big no no.. They basically used udon which make me feel cheated.. Apparently that is a recommended dish.. Had pan fried pork bun which is not in the photo.. Taste good but the dough is not what i was expecting... It is way too thick.. Fried pork bun dough is supposed to be thin.. But this one literally is a bun..
Shannonplus123
Do not order pork belly steamed buns.... It was very disappointing.... The cucumber is even bigger than the pork belly... And a huge bun with a little tiny meant in it just so ridiculous.... <br/>I used to love this restaurant, but somehow I think their quality isn't as good as I remembered. The pastry of pan fried pork dumplings didn't fully cooked, you can still taste the flour..
Milly
New shanghai never disappoints!! My friends and I always order the panfried dumplings because its always crunchy and tasty. Their lychee frappe and honey green tea were the best we've had
Brisfoodiefangirl
Possibly the best pork dumplings ever, they are soft and fluffy but still have a crispy bottom! The braised pork belly was nice but maybe not the best pork belly I've ever had.
Deborah Batchelor
Disappointed (after wanting to go here for ages), we waited in line and eventually got seated wedged up against the bar. Ordered and then were told by passing waiter "No EftPos or Credit Card facilities today". Dumplings OK but pork was strange mid pink colour (almost not cooked) and twenty cents for each take away container we needed. It's a shame because I thought the decor was fantastic and it was fun to watch the dumplings being made.
Angela Sun
Nice pan fried Xiao long Bao. Average priced $30 per person, located right in the city centre next to david Jones. Definitely going back for more. <br/>
Paul Cavallaro
Great atmosphere however pork has a bit rubbery. It was great to see food being prepared. Interpreting the menu was a nightmare. Long wait outside for a table.
Brisbane Devoured
Brisbane’s branch of New Shanghai has been down in the bottom of Queens Plaza for a couple of years now. We blogged about it back shortly after it opened (see post here) but to be honest we hadn’t actually returned since that visit. I was pleased to be recently invited back to experience some Shanghai cuisine again.
Captainshaft
Pretty good even compared to the genuine stuff from SH. Like their varieties in types of noodle and dumplings. Worth coming back again! The location is also convenient for anyone wanting to try good Chinese food in the city
Patrick
One of my favourite places to go in the city. Awesome Asian cuisine, friendly and quick service and pretty reasonable prices. Would recommend to everyone for eat in or take out

Pricey asian dishes. Was here with my boyfriend. xiaolongboa is a must <br/>we wanted to try something new today, so we went for the special menu<br/>xiaolongboa was nice and juicy and flavoursome<br/>we ordered the rice cracker with sweet and sour sauce i believe... <br/>i was awful.! it was so sour that brought me to cough, there was not much in the sauce except a few pieces of seafood. it cost us $21 <br/>for 8 pieces of mini rice crackers and the sauce made from vinegar :( very disappointed
Nutty
Average. Look i rated this place a "like" because the food was good and not over priced. However I don't see what the fuss and the large lines were for.
Eflord
Shanghai style. Good rustic shanghai style food. The place is always full. <br/><br/>Drunken Chicken is a favourite
Shayne
I am actually been there a few times. The food was "okay", since there isn't much Chinese cuisine restaurant in the city. But the staff are not really attentive. After they saw you raised your hand, you still have to wait like 5 minutes before they came to you. And every time you ordered any food, they will missed at least one meal and you have to check with them whether how long you still have to wait. So, if you have a high demand about the eating, better don come.
Ross
Poor Service but Great Food. New Shanghai is quintessentially 'authentic' in that it views quality of food more important than service. You'll find that in most restaurants in mainland China; the food speaks for itself, not the service!<br/><br/>I've been going to New Shanghai since it opened, and each time, the food is consistently good. Dumplings are their specialty but everything that we've ordered in the past years have been good. <br/><br/>Best food joint in Queen's Street Mall, and brilliant value for money. Long may this place prosper.
Jennydo31
Delicious food. Excellent value.. Attentive and pleasant staff. Wonderful dumplings. Excellent value for money.
The Devourer Of Food
You take my money? Ok ... just Ok. This is a little surprise on this side of town that is not know to have good Yum Cha. However, my Obesity Senses were tingling as my trolley boy roll my fat butt pass this place. I was so full of Xiao Long Bao and prawn dumplings that the wheel on the trolley went flat and had to be crane lifted up the stairs.
F.von.briel
Don't eat here if you ever had proper Dim Sum. It is not generally bad, but don't eat here if you ever had proper Dim Sum in China or Hong Kong. You would be highly disappointed!

I love this place. This place is great, i've been here a few times and will definitely keep coming back. Service is quick, and efficient - nothing amazing but nothing to complain about either. Prices are decent and the decor is lovely. its loud, not very intimate but at the same time a fun place to be with friends and family. you get to watch the chefs make the dumplings through the window which is always entertaining.<br/><br/>Stand out from all my visits would be the xiao long bao, pan fried pork and shrimp steam bun (they taste very similar to the ones i had when i was in Shanghai) and the lychee martinis. <br/>Last time i was here, they offered a great "happy hour" lunch deal which i though was great value for money.

Yum. Came alone, ordered pan fried dumplings. Restuarant was full but was seated and served immediately and got my food very quickly. Service was super fast and friendly. Dumplings were delish!

Really good Xiao Long Bao. Love the food here. The gyoza type dumplings aren't as good, I think the skin is too thick but the Xiao long Bao is brilliant. <br/>The shepherds purse with the peanut butter is also good but I wished they were more spicy with more of a kick. Still yummy though. <br/>I also like the prawns with the salted duck egg. Very rich and morish.

Good. Service could be a little better. Should have serving cutlery for every dish

Best dumplings in Brisbane!!!. I've searched high and low for decent dumplings! This place definitely met my expectations! The food was awesome! Maybe don't go there during peak hours if you're impatient and hangry, because you will have to wait. However if you don't have anywhere to be, definitely, go there, as it is well worth the wait! And affordable!

We've been treated worse than cattle. Absolut disrespect to me and my family when trying to accommodate us. We left. Not a family friendly place!
Alanyuan424
I loved the food, but please slow down on hanging the dishes over...order 8 dishes, came out nearly all at the same time...

Worth the wait? NO! Complete disaster.. Was waiting in line to get seated. may tables free but had to wait 5-10 minutes before anyone came back to us for seating. This place has got to have the worst customer service. The waiters seem like they ignore you even though they have seen you and your sitting there screaming "EXCUSE ME" and having your hand up. I had to wait and hunt down a waiter. Also to note, I got fried dumplings which were burnt. COMPLETELY burnt, on the bottom and therefore that was all you could taste. Tea was also a rip off. Only half pot was filled. approximately only the smallest pinch of tea leafs were given, therefore the tea was basically just hot water. When requested for it to be refilled, had to wait for so long, that we were long finished and could not wait anymore.<br/><br/>I would NEVER return. absolutely horrible.

Appalling customer service. Despite opening time being 11am still not letting people into the restaurant by 11.20am(i say by 11.20am cause thats when we left) but what is more frustrating and unprofessional is the fact that no one made an effort to communicate to the multitude of people queueing outside. Manager and 2 other still eating on one of the tables at 11.15am and when questioned about whats happening she felt she was justified because they were putting christmas decorations up. A family with kids left, we left and will never return again. Worst customer service ever.

Great buns. Best buns in Brisbane at the moment. anything else on their menu is just average though. go there for their buns, you won't be disappointed.

Worth the wait. Go early and bring a large appetite. Great food.

Do not order the steamed pork belly bun!!!. Once a fortnight I will go to pick up some xiao long bao for takeaway but today I had a long lunch break so decided to eat there with a colleague. We ordered the afternoon deal (A) and picked the steamed pock belly bun. The food always comes out fast so we were happy with that, however when my colleague took a bite out of her bun.. she had a sick look and removed the pork from her bun straight away and warned me not to eat it as there was a sickening smell once in the mouth. Thinking that she was overreacting I took a bite (missing the pork completely since it was such a small piece) I took a second bite. As soon as I started to chew, I smelt the horrid off-like stench! I spat it out and took a look at the pork, and to my horror it was bright pink! We called the waitress over and asked her to take a look and have a smell, she took it to the cook and came back saying that the restaurant receives the pork pre-cooked and it was suppose to look like that. I am no chef... but isn't pork suppose to be 100% cooked!? Not to mention the funky smell.. my colleague asked her to check that the pork was not expired. We advised her that it was not edible at all and asked to change it for something else of same value. She came back saying we already ate half of the food and couldnt do anything about it. How did we eat half of the dish when my colleague only took 1 bite of hers and I took 2 bites of mine. I am no monster with a large set of teeth! I understand asian food can be quite adventurous at times but my colleague is from China and I am too of asian descent and we have NEVER encountered an establishment claiming that it is normal for the pork to look or smell like that. With such dissapointment, I couldnt eat anything after that.

Casual dining. Good food.. Took my wife there for dinner last Thursday. It was the first time I'd been inside, normally queues are pretty long. Anyway, it's very casual dining (reminded me of Wagamama) and the food was tasty and pretty timely. Would go back.

Dumpling and Pork Ribs. The dumplings we had here are as good as any we have had in Hong Kong and the pork ribs were better than the ones we had in orange County. The service was a bit too quick but the food and the prices definitely made up for anything else. Going for lunch we couldn't believe how quickly it filled up so unless you like to qeue think about what time you show up here.

Review. I'm a big fan of the food here. The xiao long bao are delicately made, juicy and full of tender pork. Last time, I tried fried tofu in salted egg yolk. The tofu cubes were perfect, crisp outside and tender inside, in an intense, grainy yellow sauce - exactly the sort of new taste that's such a refreshing addition to the "traditional" Aussie chinese. The bean sprouts come served in a beautifully textured hill shape. <br/><br/>The service is kind of brisk and institutional, though efficient, and there's often a queue. But if you go early, it's worth it.
Misscharlot
Not the same anymore. The xiao long bao is smaller the taste changed the pork inside got a strange texture to me. We also ordered half a chicken, and it tastes nothing can’t even finish it. Is so disappointed that don’t think we will ever come back again not just because of he food but also the service. (Dec 2017)<br/><br/>Gotta recommend The American Ribs. Deep fried, you must love it. The must order dish, Xiao long bao never fails to surprise me every single time. (July 2015)

Wouldnt allow us to sit out the front. We have been here a few times. Have noticed it has become less popular of late. The last time we were here we asked to be seated out the front of the store as we had a (expensive) relatively bulky pram. We also had shopping bags etc. Was told they didn't have enough staff on for us to sit there so to instead leave our pram outside and sit inside??? Didn't end up doing that... Wont return.

Free Offers online. Lured in by a free voucher sent online for dumplings which we made aware to the waitress, and ordered noodle soup, dry noodles with minced pork and another set of fried dumplings. They were all VERY tasteless which had to be supplemented with soya sauce, vinegar and chilli. To our dismay we were overcharged as the voucher was the wrong order (taken by their waitress) and evidently not honoured. Such pettiness for the sake of a few dollars has lost them customers like us forever. In addition we were charged for take away containers for the left overs. When we got home had to rush to the loo. Gave the rest to the dog but only got a cold stare probably saying "what? you wanna poison me?" Stomach Growler

We went here for dinner last week mid week and had a great night. <br/><br/>Have been before and liked (voted positively last year). We have our favourites on the menu (fresh Chinese vege, pork belly, spicy soups etc) and had another good experience last week. Larger group but we were seated in time and had a good waitstaff. <br/><br/>Did not accept amex.

What have they done so far !!! What a great value of foods !! I am just speechless in every single times during each meal time !!

Always a bit hit and miss. New Shanghai offers an interesting variety of Chinese food and is conveniently located in the CBD. That is about all that it's got going for it however, and I reckon that as soon as another average priced Chinese restaurant opens in the city, New Shanghai will lose a lot of business. Their food quality is RELATIVELY good (but then again, they don't have much competition in the CBD. Food court fare doesn't count!). But where they are lacking is their shoddy, and at times dodgy, customer service. First off, unless you rack up a bill of $30 or more you can't pay by card. Dodgy! If you have an online voucher, they don't tell you that it won't be valid if you show it to them when you go to the counter to pay your bill and by then your bill is already printed out, so apparently they can't just issue another one with your discount. Dodgy! I can deal with the non-smiling waiters and even the chipped/dirty tableware, but these guys won't even try to apologise or make amends for ridiculous wait times, forgetting your order and burnt food! I generally don't have the highest expectations of budget restaurants, but now I've had a few too many negative experiences here and won't bother going back..

Beware this place. This 4th time I went here to eat in my dumpling this time I found little rocks inside them when I was chewing on them the filling wad pork and coriander was not clean properly had a chat to the staff member she went to manger kept arguing about how clean they are then accuse Me putting them in as if I carry rocks around service here is extremely Rude just as bad as land mark at sunny bank

Go for your favorites. We go here regularly, not for the service but for the great dishes we are now slightly addicted to at a great price ! <br/>1. Xiao Long Bao - usually hot and steamy and full of broth and flavour<br/>2. Pan fried pork dumplings - crispy and slightly charred on the bottom - yum<br/>3. Steamed buns with meat and cucumber - fill your own with these tasty treats.<br/>We occasionally go outside our comfort zone and order something else, but generally come back to these or another dumpling. If your heart specialist is on standby try the soy pork! The chinese tea here is good. Recommend going just outside peak times when it is still busy but not over run and avoid the really quiet times as they seem to be mostly getting prepared for the busy times again.

Mediocre, would not dine again. I had the fried chicken and noodles with the special garlic and chilli sauce and my friend had the shredded pork and noodles and we all had the pan fried pork dumplings, a virgin pina colada and lemon lime and bitters. So the fried chicken and noodles were served separately and the noodles had so much liquid, it was slightly bland and there was no trace of chilli and garlic in the sauce except for some chilli seeds. The chicken was served as slices but there was a piece with a joint and socket of the chicken, so that was bad. The shredded pork noodles only had 5% pork and the rest was just noodles covered with sauce and some bok choi and it was average and not worth the money. The pan fried dumplings were good. I had the virgin pina colada and jt was 75% ice, I kid you not but it tasted nice but there was not enough. My friend had the lemon lime and bitters and it was very sweet but there was a lot more of the drink compared to mine. Overall it was mediocre and I would not dine again.
Ashleyluren
Fail. I booked online via the website at newshanghai.com.au. Don't bother - I got no reply from my online booking and, when I arrived for dinner, no table. I can't even comment on the food, because I didn't hang around to taste it, and after this experience, I'm not sure that I'll bother again. In a way, I am grateful, because did have a fantastic meal at The Imperial at Eagle Street. Go there instead - fantastic food and excellent service!
Matt Fer
I love dumplings but not from here. The outside was way too thick and chewy and overcooked plus there was hardly any filling except for all the hot water which sprayed out when I took a bite. Stay away!
Cleo
Horrible Service, Average Food. Out of 6 dishes we ordered, only 2 were above average. Despite the most amazing prawn dumplings I have ever had, the horrific service and rudeness of every single staff member we dealt with brought this restaurant down in my eyes and I'll never be coming back here again. Disappointed.
Amanda
Only order the dumplings! A.... Only order the dumplings!<br/>All their other food is below average!
R
Only order item 201 (steamed pork dumpling with soup inside) - it is delicious. Otherwise, the service is absolutely horrendous - a waitress spilt a full bottle of soy sauce all over me absolutely ruining my shirt, my partners shirt and pants, and splattering the occupants at the next table. It was an absolute nightmare trying to get fair compensation. When you ask to speak to the manager, they really should send the manager out instead of another waitress.
Simone Tonkin
Tasty Dumplings! The prawn wonton, pan fried pork dumplings and crispy chicken are delicious! About a 5 minute wait on Saturday, service is adequate, you're here for the food not for people to ask you every 5 minutes if you're ok! Once you order your dumplings they leave you alone to enjoy the food coma!
Red Pepper
Bad service and and worse food. If you're expecting traditional Chinese, stay away
Kuanzhi Chen
Have to say the food and service are horrible as a Chinese
Richard
This is definitely one of our top the places in Brisbane to go for Xiao Long Bao, and the pan fried option is a great alternative - definitely worth queuing for. The service is adequate, but I've you've already ordered it can be difficult to get any more attention from wait staff, so might not be up to some people's standards but the good is worth it.
AWESOME. Terrific place. Worth the queue.
Food Glorious Food
Nice stop in the city. The traditional xiao long pau was good, not too fatty and in fat really nice soup. <br/>Spicy and sour soup was well seasoned and the cold dish of pork ribs yummy too... <br/>This will be my new stop in the city from now on.
Heybrisbane
Tasty pork belly. The braised pork belly was superb! Also love the decoration of this place :)
Foodieinheels
Great food, and you feel like you're sitting on a street with the restaurant decor. Recommend the pan fried pork buns, shanghai noodles, crispy skin chicken (boneless!!), salt & pepper squid and pork belly. Service is average but you shouldn't expect excellent service at Asian restaurants. Prices reasonable for the city location. The place gets very busy during peak lunch and dinner times so best to go before then (eg. 5.30pm weeknights).
Jaclyn
Yum. Been here a number of times and absolutely love it. The best steamed pork buns ever, but qatch out for the liquid inside as can be very hot. staff seam friendly also
Caroline Wan
Staffs here appeared to be inexperienced, eg we have ordered pork dumplings and they gave us lamb dumplings, when we raised it to them they said they have mixed the order w another table, those aunties demonstrating dumplings wrapping just chit chat all the time. Honey & grape fruit drink has no taste, like water. Deep fried radish pastry tasted awful!!
Adsl43k6
Good and bad. I have been to this fabulous restaurant a few times now and everything I have had has been awesome and so tasty but holy crap the service is terrible. We have waited 30mins to be served and then didn't receive my drinks till the end of my meal. This has happened on several occasions so sadly not a one off event. So this restaurant is a hit and miss for me.The food being great but with crap service and no smile.
Jess
Beware. On three separate occasions, we found spoiled food served to us. Pork mince inside dumplings, cold jelly fish salad and the lotus rice sweets had gone off. Although the staff happily exchanged the dishes, we lost confidence with this restaurant. We also found remnants of wire scrubs in vegetable stir fry.
Kittypie2008
EXCELLENT food, GREAT service!. I am confused about the comments here about "bad" service. If you want in your face staff fawning over you and asking you "hows your food" every 5 minutes maybe you should go eat at Grill'd. The staff here are great and so is the service - no nonsense, they take your order right away and are very fast bringing out the food. There is nothing more annoying than chatty obnoxious staff who harass me every 5 minutes to try and push me to order something extra. <br/>Anyway the food is BRILLIANT. This is a DUMPLING restaurant so their specialty is dumplings which they do amazingly. I come here every week without fail because I am addicted to their pan fried dumplings and steamed pork and cabbage dumplings. The noodles are great too! My main issue with this place is that everything on the menu is so delicious that it can be hard to decide what to order. The prices are also ridiculously cheap!
Xiaoyu.wang
Bad food and bad service!. The service in New Shanghai, Brisbane City (Underneath of David Jones), is definitely very bad. Every waiter and waitress is so unfriendly that to make you feel like you owe them a lot of money. However the service is not the worst yet, the food is. the Chicken and vegetables we ordered were not fresh, the taste of the sauce was terrible. The deep fried fish with sweet sauce was just ok but the sauce was not enough. The fish tasted oily and plain without any sauce and the waitress refused to add more sauce for us. We had been told that we can only have the sauce unless we order another of the same dish! The food there is not cheap and I think they basically treat the customers as idiots.
Dave Zou
Really enjoyed dinner here. Nice dumplings and served quickly. Definitely will come back with my friend, and highly recommend people to come to try.
Anity.s
Amazing Food but don't come here for service. Food here is amazing! Love it. Definitely try the Xiao Long Bao and the Deep Fried Buns. Being Chinese myself, these are actually great quality. <br/><br/>Service wise is HORRIBLE. Cannot begin to write how bad the service is. Everyone looks like they don't want to be there, no smiles, no anything.
Joanne
Unfriendly staff as well as the boss. Well, pan fried pork dumplings are good, while the rest on the menu were just average... Worth to have a try.
Lol
Very bad quality meats!

Came here for dinner (fri night) bit of a line up, but was worth it! Really enjoyed it. Will definetly be going back!

Successful Chinese food offering. This is the fifth New Shanghai store and they're certainly onto a formula that's popular and it's not just with the Asian food bloggers. Second time we've been here - had xiao long bao with the crabmeat (tasty), pan fried pork buns (yes!), shallot pancake (have to say this was on the small side). Had the stick rice cakes with XO sauce (get this), and although we've not had it before the Shantung crispy skin chicken - this was the revelation versus the hundreds of times we've had it in Cantonese restaurants where there's always the risk of food poisoning from the chicken not having been fully cooked through. Very pleased with the crispy skin and lots of dark meat - everybody was impressed.<br/><br/>Like this place - note the queues.
Laura Stripeikis
Cheap. Tasty. Convenient. Quick.

Taste OK. Taste was good but nothing special...

8/10. Cool place and delicious dumplings. The only complaint would be that sometimes I find it hard to get served, the waitstaff are always in such a rush they overlook you when you're trying to get their attention. I would recommend one or two more waitstaff but apart from that, great!
A Hungry Man Is An Angry Man
Best Chinese Food in Brissy. I lived in China for 3 years, travelled around China extensively and the food in New Shanghai is the best, most authentic Chinese food I've had in Brisbane. Yes, better than what you can get in Sunnybank. Worth lining up. Shame it is next to a hideous food court and Supermarket, even if it is in Queen's Plaza.
Mel
Good but not amazing. Xiao long bao skin is not as thin and smooth as the one from Din Tai Fung but, it was good.
Eve
This place was horrible!! Bad service and bad food. Only 1 gluten free option and to make it gluten free it comes without the main ingredient of pork.
The Invisible Food Critic
The food here is quite alright, although I haven't tried alot of dishes but their dumplings remain very traditional and was done quite well. Some dishes were above average but still got their basics together. I like this place with very nice decorations and I rate it 6.5/10

Food never arrived for 2 people on the table. Might have been good but didn't get the opportunity to find out.

Lies: Mains are Cantonese Cuisine. My friends and I decided to try out New Shanghai on the recommendation of a friend of a friend who also allowed us to sample some delicious Xiao Bao dumplings. <br/><br/>Upon being seated, we expected the typical service in an Asian restaurant. My friend and I ordered the Shanghai noodles with Pork at $9.50, and my other two friends ordered, Crispy Skin Chicken and American Pork Ribs at about $16. The shanghai noodles arrived first with the Chicken and the Ribs arriving 5 mins later. A bit of faux pas on the service side but it is expected in an Asian restaurant. <br/><br/>It was quite obvious when presented with the noodles it was Cantonese cuisine-not Shanghai-nese. The dish had Hokkien Noodles, quartered of the whole Bok Choi and less than 20g of pork, the pork strips were literally less than the size of matchsticks. Now I am quite understanding of restaurant business, but you should not lie about the cuisine on the menu and be so utterly lazy about the preparation and presentation of the food. Quartered Whole Bok Choi screams laziness. <br/><br/>When the Chicken and American Ribs came, it was presented as normal crispy skin unseasoned butcher's chicken with little flavor and deep-fried cut ribs with no hickory sauce or seasoning. My friend who ordered the ribs, is a chef, was quite unhappy, as he expected oven-roasted ribs marinated in hickory based sauce, served whole as a ribcage. Not deep-fried off-cuts. Quite disappointing as both were plain and boring-throwing parsley on top of fried food does not add to flavour; it just shows lazy presentation as well. <br/><br/>The decor is nice, but some the chipped crockery distracted our attention. <br/><br/>I would like for them not to pass cantonese cuisine as shanghainese cuisine on the menu. <br/><br/>I understand rent is expensive etc to make you cut corners. But you can't fool people from lazy prep, lazy presentation, no flavor, in your main courses and still charge bowls of Rice as extra (@$2 each) <br/><br/>Although the dumplings are nice. I can't recommend the dinner service. If this restaurant was at Market Square Sunnybank, it would be severely outcompeted.

Great Venue -Love the crab noodles. I really like new shanghai. The service is only ok, but the food is a great price point for the location. Quick and easy and a great fast escape when in the city. Food is always really tasty. I particularly like their crab with sliced noodle. I have been three times now.
Saran
Great venue and great food!. We had a lovely meal here. This is a really unique venue - I love the decor. One of the best Chinese places in the CBD!
Demi-leigh
Wasn't impressed at all. The service was horrendous - there seemed to be a big language barrier with the servers we had and the chicken I ordered was so pink it was practically still walking around. I won't be back.
Gradelle
Great dumplings in Brisbane CBD. Have been here multiple times now. Definitely one of the best dumplings in Brisbane, and the fact that it is located in the city is Plus! Try the Xiao Long Bao & Shanghai Dry Noodle with szechuan sauce, a fav for hubby & I. Just make sure you are not eating the dumpling straight after it has been served and the broth will burn you!
Latitudes
Pedestrian dumplings. Rude staff. Had to actively seek out device then vinegar then ginger then spoons. There are so many better places
Morgan Tamaho-Peri
Some waiters and waitresses here are rude. Two of them were having a lovely chat while i had my hand up to order for a good 2 minutes. Food is good though.
Justanothermofo
Yummy but needs work on service. Really nice selection of food and the servings are substantial with an above average price point, there's always a queue to dine here and if you come for the food, you won't be disappointed. You may be disappointed by the spotty service though. I would dine in again but try at a less busy time perhaps.
Lauren Anne
Yum and good value. This place has great dumplings and mains!!! We always find them to be huge serves and great value! Service is fast (sometimes abrupt but doesn't bother me)! We wish this place wasn't in city so we could visit more easily!!! Yum!!!
Ann Liao
Food is nice and service is not bad only thing I would say is the young guy at the counter " I think he is the boss" he really needs to smile or be more welcoming. What a put off at the end of a nice experience .
Hryelle
Dericious. Nothing bad on the menu.
Sarah V
So yummy. Number 203 of the menu is to die for
Cath0303
The pan fried dumpling are pretty good, everything else on the menu is average. Sloppy service.
Melly
Have been wanting to try this place for ages! As we waited in line for 15minutes, a waiter came out and moved down the line telling those waiting that the cooker was broken and they could only offer 5 dishes on the menu. How was this possible when the tables inside were still being served all sorts of dumplings. We'd paid $15 to park so wasn't turning away now. Decided to risk it and wait in line. And surprise surprise when we were seated 5 minutes later, there was no mention about the cooker being broken. What the...??? We were however informed of a 20minute wait for the food which was fine by us. So I'm still puzzled as to why they didn't tell us while in line that there's a bit of a wait instead of making up some ridiculous story that the cooker is broken. Are they seriously trying to shorten the queue by making up such ridiculous nonsense. Don't think the owner would be impressed. Service was appalling but enough winging...Dumplings are amazing and very well priced! The pan fried pork buns (with a small amount of soup inside each bun) are to die for! Also the pork and chive dumplings are a must.
Chia
Some decent dishes. Waiters rude.. Don't expect good shanghai dumplings. The steam ones. No even close to good actually, They really need to work on making better shanghai dumplings. <br/><br/>Good thing about this place is the pan fried pork buns. Veggie dishes are pretty decent too. <br/><br/>Service is definitely lacking. The guys working there are really rude and do not bother looking around to help customers. One guy just quickly looked away when we asked for some service. The guy who was super skinny moderate height with glasses gave us the most dirtiest look ever and told us to wait. Also the waiters and waitresses are mostly behind the counter chatting away. Even when you wave your hand for some service they give you this look like we are disturbing their important conversation.<br/><br/>They are really lucky that their food is good otherwise wouldn't go back because of their waiters lack of customer service skills.<br/><br/>Finally Brisbane has a Shanghai restaurant that serves some decent edible dumplings that aren't overly expensive.<br/><br/>But this restaurant better watch out if another Shanghai restaurant open next door who serves good shanghai dumplings because I'd rather eat there.
Krystle Lee
Average. I've been to this place a couple of times, it has the advantage of being one of the few dumpling places and it is well-placed right in the middle of the city. I've tried a couple of their dumplings before though, including the specialty soup-filled dumplings and I've always been disappointed with them. The dumplings are too chewy and not particularly soft, not as good as the ones I had in Sydney.
Viktor
Like everyone else says: food good, service not so good
Ange17
The dumplings are amazing!!! have had two great experiences at new shanghai. Very tasty, fresh, great servings and every thing you'd want from asian dishes. Spring rolls are also very good. Love it, my favourite dining experience in a while...
Jacinta
Go for the dumplings!. Love the dumplings with soup inside! Don't expect great service but the food is delicious and I always leave satisfied!<br/><br/>Note that their minimum eftpos is $30 which is a bit strange but I have mostly exceeded that amount with 2 diners.

Plain, Bad Food. Had lunch yesterday at New Shanghai for the first time and it was one of the worst meals I have ever had in Brisbane. It tasted like it had been plated up hours ago and bought out when ordered. The rice was cold and dry, the chicken was beyond dry and chewy with the "crispy skin" tasting like it was cooked a week ago. It came with bok-choy which was also cold. My companion had the salt and pepper calamari which had to be "ripped" out of his mouth with his fingers as you couldn't just bite it. They had also put vinegar instead of soy sauce in the containers on the table, which also further wrecked the dining experience - and the meal. We won't ever be returning.
Azn Foodie
Bad service ruined the meal for me. Bad service, and as a result, I don't see myself going back there again. We had the Braised beef noodles and Dry spring onion noodles. Noodles were soggy, and did not taste authentic. The only good thing I would say about this restaurant is the Dumpling/ Xiao Long Bao. Not worth queuing up for I would say!
Suzuki Makoto Mitsuboshi
Don't wear a white shirt ^_^. Waited in line for this at lunch but got a seat very quickly.<br/>the New Shanghai Pan Fried Pork Bun and Pan Fried Pork Dumpling came out very quickly and were so juicy that I would not recommend to wear a white shirt to dine at this place ^_^ haha

I was in a group of 6 for my first time here. Lovely atmosphere with the family style dining. Extensive menu but we didn't even make it past the beautiful hand made dumplings! I can't wait to go back again! Simply amazing
Erica
Food is good but the service is not well! Always can't find the waiter/waitress! Even we call them , they still chatting! Ask them about the question of the menu, they just answer " I'm not sure" and don't find out!
Homerofbrisbane
New Shanghai. Yes the service can be hectic and there is always a long queue. Get over it and you get good quality buns and dumplings. I can't say the a la carte dishes were as god as their buns and dumplings as we ordered some less than impressive dishes. Will try and stick to the staples next time. Prices are reasonable for a city restaurant.
CB
Pork belly braised overnight in sweet soy sauce was super tasty. Would come back just for this dish. It came with bok choy. The fried pork bun was average & the deep fried pastry shallot & ham was too dry. Very busy during lunch. Stuck seated next to the line of people who are paying for their meal. That wasn't cool.
Babeevenyo
Shanghainese girl likes it:). Not all the food there is Shanghainese but at least the food that I like all tasted nice! Miss Shanghai a lot so I always go there and eat. Nice food, nice place.
Linda
Reasonably priced. Definitely room to improve in the soup dumpling as there is not much soup in them, was hoping to relive my soup dumpling experience when I was in New York. Overall it was a nice dining experience and would come back.
AZ
Seriously good dumplings, best I've had in Brisbane. Go there!
Saxafun
SAXAFUN. Great food.. .spoiled by inept service.Having dined there on several occasions and only ordering lightly (soup and steamed dumplings) the waiters have yet to get it right. When it becomes a hassle to get them to just bring what is ordered in a reasonable time the enjoyment of the meal is greatly diminished ."would you like water" was answered in the affirmative .It however NEVER arrived!! ..".could I please have some chili" ..same result ..Pity ..

Splendid Drink. The drink in new shanghai is vast in variety and delicious on taste buds. The waiters and bar tenders are both helpful and friendly. I had 'Virgin Sex on the Beach' as my first mocktail experience. It's rather quirky, but the berry flavor is like an explosion in the mouth. I would not recommend anyone who does not have a sweet tooth to try it. (It's very sweet.) My friend's 'Cosmopolitan' is fancy in its own way as well. In her word, "it's making me look as if from 20s, not old but classy.' Can't wait for more surprises within this cozy little diner.

Wonderful SXLB however unnacceptable to see bar staff twice (at least) tasting cocktails / frappes with spoon and putting SAME used spoon in for colleague to taste, then using SAME spoon to serve it with, THEN using straw to suck out from overflowing glass!!!

Great dumplings and atmosphere. Having eaten dumplings for several years in Greater China, I particularly recommend their steamed 'xiao long bao' (i.e. little dragon dumplings) that are served in the bamboo dish. Dumplings are very fresh, the dumpling skins were nice and thin (i.e. not thick and 'doughy' like some places) and fillings were very tasty. Great atmosphere with beautiful decor! The hot and sour soup was a bit average, 'tho. Service was friendly but rather slow, we had to repeatedly ask for our drinks. I recommend that you get in before noon since there are long queues for lunch.

Tasty and cheap. I had the xiao long bao, shephards purse with pork and shallot pancake shared with a friend and was impressed with all of them. The edamame was horrible though! Not sure what was going on there but it was overcooked, slimy sitting in a puddle of salty water. Other than that everything else was good, service leaves a little to be desired but not as bad as lots of other reviews, everything was well presented and very good value for money. The setup is very cute, good ambiance. My only complaint on serving sizes would be that 10/12/15 dumplings is a LOT if there are only two of you, would be good if you could get these dishes in half sizes or something.
Hungry Badger
Pass. Didn't try the xiao long bao.<br/>As i can see from other reviews, this might warrant i give it a second shot sometimes. Won't be too soon though as all dishes we ordered were disappointing. Not particularly horrible, but just no flavour, not much love into them.<br/>Shangai style deep fried fish: super dry and not particularly tasty.<br/>Chinese spring roll: blah. no flavour at all. <br/>Deep fried calamari coated with salted egg yolked: pieces were too thick and no flavour or seasoning to speak of. <br/>We ordered a fourth dish which i can't remember, prawns, very sweet, nothing to rave about.<br/>Yes, maybe we ordered the wrong dishes, but still any of these in a respectable chinese restaurant can be very pleasant.<br/>I know, i know, i should have ordered xiao long bao. Maybe next time.
Clairemc
Loved it. We beat the lunch time rush by going at 11:30 and got seated straight away. Unsure on portion size we ordered the vegetarian dumplings, drunken chicken and rainbow beef to share with plenty left over. Fast and friendly service, will go back again for sure.

Authentic and overpriced. Lived in Shanghai for 3 years and always craved staple items like basket buns (xiao long bao), pan fried buns and wontons ever after. I'd agree with the Frankie Gao review below. It's nice to finally find a place in the CBD with good Shanghainese food. But only if you're after the most basic items, nothing fancy. It is a little over priced, considering what you're paying for, but I guess that's the common trend in Brisbane downtown. Service is hit or miss, there's usually a wait (up to 20 mins), sometimes servers are prompt other times slow. Atmosphere and decor is awesome though and the giant window into the kitchen where they make the buns is what would you see in old Shanghai restaurants.

Average XLB. I prefer a slight ginger kick to mine. Nice decor and teapots though.

My asian delight. This place is so goood! if you hear bad reviews, just means they dont know what to order!
Naysan
Had assorted types of dimsims and were all flavoursome and fresh. Would definitely return.

Worst service I've ever experienced at a restaurant in my life and mediocre food that just tastes of MSG. Please avoid this place
Jay
Love it!. Been here many times since it opened, and I have to say I adore it! I do concede that some of the options on their menu aren't that great, but their actual 'Shanghai'-based options are excellent. Perhaps better than all the other stores in Brisbane attempting to sell these: Xiao Long Bao (mini pork dumpling), the pan-fried pork dumpling, the pork bun, etc.<br/>Unfortunately, there isn't that much seating inside, so there is a long line at lunch, and the service isn't that great, but still. The food is well worth the low prices! Definitely will continue to keep coming.

Views from a shanghainess. I'm a shanghainess, studying in Auz, I think it's not too bad that I can eat my home town flavor. However, only the steamed dumpling (xiao long bao) & wuntoon are good, other dishes are not so native shanghai dish. I just suggest try the xiao long bao only, it's a really shanghai dish and others definitely not so good. By the way, rubbish service, terrible!!!!!

Will visit again.... Heard mixed reviews about this place but really enjoyed it. Will go back again.
Noodle Noodle
Not Bad. This is our second attempt to get in before lunch time and still very full already before noon. The Shanghai dumplings were good but cool off quickly. Other dishes were good but the service needs improvement.

Perfect for the lowly student!. For cheap, tasty eats, this place is a must! The dim sum menu is extensive, with prices ranging to fit all types of budgets. My partner and I ordered a noodle dish each, which was too much! A perfect outcome for students! We had the pork and Chinese cabbage dim sum, and we would have been perfectly content eating those all night long, absolutely delicious. Quick service means food delivered to you in a flash but no customer service. I will be returning and will bring my friends with me.
Cheryl
Mobile Review. Nice steamed dumplings can't find a better one in Brisbane yet? Sour and spicy noodle is ok , it will be good to have more vegetables in there.
Feed Me
Nice steamed dumplings, at a reasonable price. I have not tried rest of menu as it seems a little overpriced....and I like the dumplings.
Kris.C
Average XLB. Price-6, Service-5, Food-5, Atmosphere-7,<br/>XLB was too small and not enough soup inside
Rossana
Used to be better. We used to go here for their fried dumplings which I must say they used to be heavenly but in the last month we felt the flavour and the juice on the meat is not as the same as it was before, also the service hasn't been the same as before staff seem to be looking everywhere else but the costumers

Terribly Over Rated. Dined here yesterday. After a ten minute wait for a free table we anticipated good food. We ordered the spiced beef shin, smoked pork hock, crispy skin chicken and beef and coriander dumplings. The beef and pork were by far the biggest disappointment and resembled something purchased from a coles deli. The crispy skin chicken was pretty flavourless, but better than the beef and pork. Dumplings were ok but not a stand out dish. Overall very disappointing meal and we were left wondering why people stand in que waiting for a table!
Canturigirl
True authentic shanghai dishes. all excellent flavour & quality. You need to ask about the menu and look at the popular dishes everyone is eating.
Howitiz
Where did this little gem appear from? Service bit amateur, but food was fantastic. An Asian restaurant can be judged by the amount of Asians eating there, needless to say it was full. Can't wait to go again
LisaSc
BAD SERVICE!. Frustrated evening there. Left very annoyed. The food was good, loved the dumplings. But the waiting staff were quite incompetent. I don't like to be hard on people but I seriously had to ask three times for one of our dishes...we had been waiting for honestly almost an HOUR!!! I'm seriously not exaggerating. I wasn't even nagging them, and every time I did ask they came back and asked me twice what I had ordered...even though the food was nice I would not go back here because of such a bad experience. If you get your food within REASONABLE time, then it would be a lovely place. I'm just going to TASTE gallery in sunnybank for cheaper and better experience. Or, if you want to go classy but still affordable, go to BAMBOO BASKET in Southbank...the shanghai soup dumplings there are to die for.

New shanhais a really good thing i tell ya. Now i tell ya what this is the kinda place i am gona come again and again a lot of drongos about and by that i mean its really busy!!!! cant a gal catch a break whos with me<br/><br/>anyway reasonable prices and i tell ya what those shepards purse dumplings in chilli peanut sauce well they get this lil slayas tummy grumblin'

Pretty decent Chinese food!. Been reading the mixed reviews on New Shanghai and I figured I should give it a try. I had the drunken chicken with cold noodles, braised tofu skin and the xlb with crab meat. The prices were decent and somewhat fit with the amount of food presented on the plate. <br/><br/>The xlb with crab meat was delicious and had the right amount of broth which was not salty at all and the pastry skin was thin. Good! The drunken chicken could have been better in terms of getting the rich flavour of the drunken sauce, cold noodles were nice. Braised tofu skin was the best, I could eat a few more plates of it. <br/><br/>All in all, decent food at decent pricing and at a nice location.
Mmfsurg
Decor look nice but not the all the food is the same. Steam XLB and pan fried versions were both good: thin pastry, plenty of soup, nice soft meat. The hot sour noodle soup was neither hot or sour. The shredded beef and bun can be better especially the bun, needs to be more fluffy. Seasame ball in rife wine soup wasn't appetizing but the shaved ice red bean and ice cream was. 6/10, has potential, just need to refine a few things. Give it a try, prices are reasonable for cbd
Jacqueline Lam
Average. Food was average. Food weren't hot enough. The plate was big but there's only a small portion of food on the plate. Expensive Asian cuisine. You can have much better food and price in Sunnybank. Service is good. Decoration and atmosphere is good.

Bang for bucks. Had dinner Friday night, must say get in early... Seated fast, food was great, didn't charge for corkage. walked out full and happy, could not believe how well priced it was.
Babycino Porter
Alright.. The first time I came here the waitstaff managed to get my drink order wrong twice before I gave up and drank what they gave me, but other than that the service is pretty good. Location is a bit odd but the interior is nice, lots of teapots up behind the counter etc.<br/>The portions are good for the price you pay, and the food is tasty (though I say this having only tried a selection of the dumplings). <br/>My only real complaint is that they need to get some chilli oil on the table between the vinegar and soy (ala bamboo basket and harajuku gyoza), charging extra for "XO sauce" is a bit ridiculous.
Barry
Did not get a chance to try - three meals were ordered, all were not available. Walked out and went somewhere else. Staff couldn't care less.
Thilini Weligamage
Delicious!. My friends and I dined here last week and loved it! The pan fried pork dumplings were absolutely amazing with the broth instead - definitely the best dumplings I've ever had =) My favourite main dish was the rainbow beef - an explosion of delicious flavours that everyone really enjoyed. And drinks-wise, we all got the lime chiller which was so lusciously light and refreshing. On top of that, every single one of our other dishes were yummy. We definitely hope to go there again sometime soon!
Debra Young
Dumplings to die for. I love it when someone new comes to town and gives Brisbane a twist on eating. The dumplings are made by hand in the window ...perfectly.<br/>The line to get in is long but worth the wait.<br/>It reminds me of Melbourne and cute dumpling cafes you find down the lane ways. Yet it is in queens plaza opposite tea 2 near the food court.<br/>If you like dumplings then you will love it here
Jessica
Underwhelming. I was going to start a big long winded recount of my experience here today however have decided to keep it short. <br/>Don't waste your money, time, patience or taste buds on this place. <br/>If your not Asian expect to wait excessive amounts of time to be served and get your meals. We had two rounds ofccouples on either side of us be seated, order similar items, be served, eat them and leave before we got our 2nd dish.

DO NOT EAT HERE !!!!! We .... DO NOT EAT HERE !!!!!<br/><br/>We had deep fried pastry, dumplings, crab meat sweet corn soup and sweet prawn dish. They somehow managed to make them all taste disgusting and smell of raw fish & meat. We literally had 2 bites of the meals and 2 sips of the soup and left. It was terrible. I seriously advise people not to eat here!!
Tyler Brown
We loved it..... My friend and I had lunch here on a busy Thursday. She had been before and loved it, this was my first time and I loved it too. <br/><br/>We both had dumplings - chicken and celery; beef and coriander. They were both lovely - and at 12 pieces per serve, we couldn't finish them, but so wanted to try... <br/><br/>We also had to try the kelp with chilli and vinegar (I think) and the cucumber and garlic entrees. They also were amazingly good.<br/><br/>I'm surprised at the bad reviews, considering we had four dishes and they were all great. The service was fantastic, and we were out by 12n (we arrived at 11am, and by 11.15am the place was almost full). <br/><br/>We usually go down to Sunnybank to Fortune Well for Sichuan, but this place will be on our list too!
Kawaii Bubble Tea
Soup Dumplings!. I had given up getting good dumplings in Brisbane but the soup dumplings here are just as good as I've experienced in Melbourne. All the food looked great, I would happily try everything on the menu. Staff aren't rude at all, just busy.
Abhi
Not too great but not too bad either !!. I think the dumplings(pan fried ones) are damn good for the price and quality and quantity.<br/>Rest of the stuff is just ok. <br/>Chick /beef/pork with rice are all average. <br/>Probably a last min place to go on fridays after a light drinking session or casual dinner.
Cookiesandmilk
Please don't go!. The long line, decor, location and the demonstration in making the little pork buns, DO NOT BE FOOLED! This place is the WORSE if you're wanting to experience authentic Chinese food. Not only is the food below standard (tasteless and oily), but the service is atrocious! waited at least half hour for the food, I understand it was busy but no apology? Not only that, there was at least another half hour interval for the last dish! Again, no apology. Never going back to this place, please, if you read this, do not go. It's just after your money. You will be much better off elsewhere!
Lee
Very disappointing, I won't be back. Their xiao long bao were not a patch on Bamboo Basket's, and our other dumplings were very average and tasted a bit powdery. The service was frustratingly inept and not particularly friendly.
Kate S
Just had lunch at New Shanghai - sadly my high expectations were shattered. Staff a bit surly - took about 20 mins to take our order. Our tea sat at the bar getting cold for 10 mins before anyone brought it to us. XLB just ok - not a patch on Bamboo Basket or DTF. My juice finally came out at end of meal. Lots of staff standing around looking a bit vague. Wouldn't bother going again. So disappointed - it would have been great to have done awesome XLB available in the CBD.

Finally, a step forward!. We were fortunate enough to be seated straight away after arriving at the absurdly early time of 5.30 on a Friday afternoon. Several plates of dumplings (both pan fried and steamed) later, plus hot and sour soup, cucumber and garlic salad, these avid dumpling lovers can conclude that this is really one of the best in Brisbane in terms of this type of food. Better than places in Sunnybank even. Value for money is actually not bad compared to, for example, the train wreck that is Fat Noodle. The (non-alcoholic) drinks list is great, and the tea is better quality than most. A real leap forward for Brisbane and highly recommended if you can get in!
Graeme Connor
Well food great like the atmosphere shame about the quality of the serving dishes all chipped

Decided to try it out on my last day in Brisbane after reading the review .. waited outside for 15 mins and finally gother sitted with 5 others , which I don't mind as I only wanted to try the Xiao long bao for lunch ..order in 5 mins then waited for 10 mins.. request ed the waiter to serve drink b4 food arrive and to check how long still I have to wait as am wanting to get on airtrain.. another waitress came back said for the bao I have to wait 40 mins!! ...ordered something else and waited 15 mins for the tiny bowl of wanton soup to arrive ... while waiting all this time the 5 peoples on the same table as me finished eating and new 4 more new peoples arrive and already half way into their meals b4 mine arrive ... speaking of service !!! Don't go if u need a quick bite

Service is bad and food is pretty ordinary. I rather go to market square for proper Chinese food.
Rachel Hutton
The partner and I came here last Friday night, to a rather long line. We were advised about a 10 minute wait, asked politely if we wouldn't mind sharing, and accepted cause we were pretty hungry! You aren't forced to share a table, but you can get seated faster if you do. The waiters are polite, if a little hard to understand at times, but the food came pretty quickly which was good. I had the crispy skin chicken, which was really nice, but sadly not crispy. Chilli garlic sauce made up for that. Partner got the crab with salted egg yolk, he said it was tasty but fiddly as it comes in the shell. We shared a serve of Xiao Long Bao, which I thought were on par with Din Tai Fung's in Sydney. I think this restaurant's strengths lie in it's dumpling chefs, every one is fresh made in front of your eyes. Freshly made apple juice was lovely, would be even better with some ice, as it was served warm. Overall a good experience, would love to go back for dumplings (and a cold brew if we can!)
W
Most disgusted and rudest service ever!!!!!!. Most disgusted service I ever had. We have 4 families with 8 kids and the owner/manager takes away the kids table due to people queuing outside the restaurant. Couldn't believe how an adult (owner/manager) could treat kids all age around 5-9 yo in this manner. I suggest that everyone boycott this restaurant for their inappropriate behaviour to the kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Te Amo
Below average, not worth it. Even the most basic dish- fried rice, they could not make it to above average level. The fried rice tasted like those left overnight, the ingredients used tasted sour. The services were so bad and rude as well. I am very disappointed and will never ever go to New Shanghai anymore.
Forever Hungry
Average.... Decoration is nice. Have to share long tables with randoms unless big group. <br/>Food is ok. Nothing amazing. <br/>$2 corkage per person though which is pretty sweet~
Emma Gray
Paying $10+ for 2 minute noodles??!. Meh. This place is definitely over-hyped. The food isn't very great and neither is the service. I had the crispy chicken noodle soup - by definition it is simply cut up BBQ chicken served with 2 minute noodles (they were still square from the packet they had come out of). The hot and sour soup was ordinary and the fried rice was too. It is not worth the money! Asked for water twice and it never arrived. By the way, the Eftpos minimum is $30. Ridiculous as the median price of things on the menu is $12- $20. <br/><br/>Go home, cook the meal yourself and it will taste better and be a lot cheaper.
Glen Hannan
Sorry skelly, but the service contributes to the overall experience and IS worth noting on Urban Spoon. <br/><br/>No, I will never return, and I URGE OTHERS TO STAY AWAY UNTIL SERVICE IMPROVES!
Debbie Ryan
Great night out. Was a bit dubious after reading some reviews but surprisingly it was wonderful!! Food came out very quickly, more then enough food for 3 ppl ordered a cple of plates of dumplings & 2 mains.. The shallot pancakes were a definite highlight, can't wait to go back for more!
Yumosumo
Dumplings and service was ok. Plus side was that food cane out rather quickly
Mayday Boy
Its alright.... Communal tables was pretty off-putting considering in Australia we are so used to having separate tables and all. <br/><br/>Food itself was pretty good and came out fast. Tried everything from shao long bao to the spinach cooked w/ ginger. <br/><br/>Taste was pretty good. <br/><br/>If you like this kind of food without having to wait ages and not have to share tables, take a look at bamboo basket @ southbank.
Josie
Way overhyped. Typical sheep mentality surrounding this place - if you have a big queue it must be great. Well, hate to disappoint people but this food is not worth queuing for. And have to agree with reviewer below who said the decor just didn;t add up. Like putting some cheap plastic baubles with a stunning dress. Worst bit was, being stuck in the line up, had plenty of time to notice the decor faux pas..
Phoebe Lee
Not good.. I went to New Shanghai for lunch with a friend and was really disappointed. I absolutely love dumplings and yum cha, anything along those lines is usually a winner with me. <br/><br/>The line to get a seat was huge but I don't mind waiting if the food is good, but in this case it wasn't. <br/><br/>The edamame are soggy and covered in a strange sauce, they are not fresh and I could barely eat them. <br/><br/>The vegetarian steamed dumplings were horrible, they were dry and claggy on the outside and the filling was minimal and bland, the only taste I could find in them was a horrible acidity. <br/><br/>It's safe to say that I will never go back and never recommend it to a friend, I felt really ripped off after going there. <br/><br/>For more reviews and stories from Brisbane check out my blog: littlegreybox.net

First visit. Fried calamari arrived dripping oil, crispy fried chicken order forgotten finally arrived with a very dry rice. The crispy fried chicken and coating sauce was superb, staff were attentive and pleasant. The remainder we want to forget<br/><br/>Jim Sharpe

Mary, Mary, quite contrary.. For those of you who have followed my posts, you will know that I am quite the avid dumpling fan - in all its forms. The opening of New Shanghai was one of great joy for me as it's the closest dumpling sanctuary to my office :D<br/><br/>I've now tried it out a couple of times and I am pleased to report that I had none experiences of the most negative posts of the other reviewers on this page. <br/><br/>For me the best dumplings that I tried were the pan fried buns. The pastry is the right blend of chewiness, softness and crispyness. Never mind what I say, you will just have to try them for yourself!<br/><br/>Yes, I will admit that SOME of the staff are a little abrupt but on the whole I found them to be quite friendly. You will ALWAYS have one or two disgruntled staff when you have a restaurant full of Asians.<br/><br/>The decor falls somewhere between Shanghainese chic and kitschy Asian. They look like they had an excellent designer work on the interior but then it all got spoiled by someone hanging up some cheap plastic flags and Chinese adornments.<br/><br/>Atmosphere is a-buzzin; just as you would expect at such a fast-paced eatery. Like.<br/><br/>Verdict: Value for money is quite good. I had a good time each time I came and the food comes out quite quickly (and I was quite hungry both times). Compared to Bamboo Basket, you get the same thing for exactly HALF PRICE!!! Compared to Taste Gallery, you get the same thing, for the same price BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO TRAVEL TO SUNNYBANK!!!

DISLIKE! Waitress comment customer as thief!<br/>went to New shanghai for dinner tonight. As the restaurant dont sell wine, we brought in one and clearly checked with the restaurant that was okay. We placed the wine bottle on the floor with Wollies' plastic bag half on, becoz there was no space on the table. After we paid the bill and about the leave, one of the waitress said to me 'u know u shouldve pay coucage, which we didnt charge u this time. be mindful that u have to pay, and just 4 bux, dont drink like a THIEF!' Seriously, no one said anything when we brought in the wine and isnt the part of restaurant's responsibility to note what their customers had? clearly they knew there was a bottle of wine consumed on this table, instead of putting on the bill, they define their customers as thief. <br/>What a restaurant! never ever go back again. If u dont mind your night/day out got ruined, then go.
Nick In Briz
Food not worth the hassle. Communal noisy tables, with numbered dishes ordering shouldn't be so hard. Getting the attention of a waiter is also really difficult.<br/>About half of the the xiao long bao (pork and soup dumplings) stuck to the dish so the dumpling was unavoidably ripped, spilling the soup before you could eat it. The reason for this became apparent when you ate the dumpling and found the bottom half soggy from over-steaming. Stir fried meet was a bit too dry.<br/><br/>Overall the food is not too bad, but there were enough little disappointments so I won't be back in a hurry.
Tuan Nguyen
Typical Asian service but the quality of the food is outstanding. The dumplings are fresh, the noodles is well balance with flavour and the broth for the soups are simple but very nice. Best of all the pricing is very good, for 4 of us it only cost $60 and we even has to take some left overs home

Awwwwwwful first time experience. The manager should teach his staff some proper customer service.... I have never in my life experienced such poor service.<br/>Never even made it to sit down to eat as the host at the door was soooo rude and nasty.. Horrible food and staff. Worst restaurant I have ever visited, the food tasted bland and was poorly prepared (the dumplings were falling apart when they arrived), the dessert never arrived and I was told to move while eating by staff so they could squeeze more customers on the table. Furthermore, the staff act as though they have no clue when asked what ingrediants are in a certain meal. Don't bother dining here- the food is terrible and the waitors are clueless when it comes to customer service.
Daisy
Terrible service, don't go on a week day! We ordered 3 plates of Dumplings. The first one came after 35 mins, the last one came at the 50 min mark and I was late back to work. The table next to us got given a plate then it got taken off and given to another table, only to be given back again! The staff are not helpful and couldn't tell us what was in a dumpling. The food was ok but you can get better elsewhere. Fail.
Lambros Lakoumentas
Dumplings tasted like they were loaded with MSG. Weren't too bad though.. Service was quite quick but it wasn't busy.
Sarah Allen
Pretty good. The service was great, though the food was meh... we had the shanghai stir fried noodles with shredded pork, steamed beef dumplings and deep fried pastries filled with shallots and ham (these pastries were delicious!)

Finally. I've been a long time patron of NSH at Chatswood Chase and after recently moving to Brisbane I was so glad to see that they had opened here. After reading some of the reviews on here I think it's important to know how it all works so that you aren't too disappointed/frustrated etc. <br/><br/>- You will need to line up in peak times. Tell the person at the door how many people in your group and they will give you a number. They will call out the numbers in no particular order depending on how many they can seat. In Chatswood they used to do this but you now write the number of people down and take the number yourself<br/><br/>- Sometimes you will be seated at a big table with another group. It's the only way to keep the tables turning in busy times. <br/><br/>- The service is average at best. You will more than likely need to put your hand up or go really out of your way to catch a glance of the waiters to get their attention. <br/><br/>- Their Xiao Long Bao (201) is the best in Brisbane. I've only found 2 other restaurants in Brisbane doing this - Taste Gallery at Sunnybank and Bamboo Basket at South Bank. They are both good but New Shanghai is better.. in every way. <br/><br/>- Meals will come out in any order they are ready. That includes rice, if you order a bowl of steamed rice it will probably come out first and sit there going cold while your other plates are prepared. I'd suggest waiting until you have everything and then rice then. <br/><br/>Fantastic food and average service.

Long wait for some devine food. Went there on a Saturday<br/>Staff provided a number tag for the table of 8<br/>Was advised there would be a 20 min wait<br/>Waited for 30 mins<br/>Waiter squeezed us onto a table meant for 5<br/>Then the waiter took forever to come back to get our order so we ended up getting up and grabbing a waiter<br/>food came out really quickly<br/>food was super favoursome and juice buns. Soup spurting out!<br/>value for money<br/>nice serving sizes.<br/>I would go back =) fingers crossed no long wait

Terrible food. I don't understand how the signature dish is xiao long bao when it was clearly lousy effort on their part. These dumplings are known for their thin skin that wraps around the filling and soup in the middle, whereas the ones served here are too thick and doughy. Service is poor as many of the waiters wilfully ignore the customers if they are busy. I wouldn't settle for second-rate Chinese food, and I hope they buck up. It's a shame as they've got a great location and I'd hate to see that go to waste.
Anna
Good and bad! Combo of bad service with amazing food!!
LenEey
Delicious Xiao long baos are hard to find and they are very rare in Brisbane, so you can tell how happy I am to find a placethat makes it scrumptiously! The pastry is of great consistency, meat and soup nicely wrapped inside and cooked perfectly. A must try. Another dish we tried was the Szchuan noodles, this is a very tasty dish but the noodles itself could have been of better quality. But the flavours come well together and is refreshing.

Worst service ever! Don't go here! I went at 12:30 for lunch, a group of 5. We ordered 3 x dumplings and 2 x noodle dishes. We waited 45min, and it wasn't until we asked that they told us they had lost our order!!! The staff were rude, asked to re-take our order, and never even apologized! Worst place in the CBD, definitely do not go on a work day! Worse still, we had to wait 20 mins for a table whilst the host yelled numbers out for people who arrived after us, and to add insult to injury - after we complained 4 other tables realised they had lost their orders too! Incredible!
Godzilla
Rudest service ever!!. Our food came and we asked for chopsticks (bowls already given earlier). When the waitress came back with the chopsticks, my wife asked for some serviettes. The waitress snapped at my wife saying that my wife should have said so when she asked for the chopsticks! NEVER AGAIN!!

Good Chinese food in CBD. .... Good Chinese food in CBD.<br/><br/>Xiao long bao are very good and appear to be made fresh in the kitchen. <br/><br/>Drunken chicken cold noodles are also good. Generous serving so good for sharing. <br/><br/>Could go on.. Must try.

Food great, but service is so terrible i find it hard to come here and eat.. Even getting takeaway seems to be such a drama.

Shangas!!. Hi,<br/>I have moved from Sydney to Brisbane in the last two years and this restaurant was a major player for us in Sydney.<br/>The dumplings are unrivalled in Brisbane, and the soups (try the shepherds Purse and pork) is great for those who enjoy simple chinese cooking.<br/>We went with 3 adults and 2 kids and ate for under $50. You cant beat that value for high quality chinese cooking in Brisbane.<br/>The service is something you have to get used too, sometimes everything comes at once, other times it comes out in different orders, it depends on what is available. If you enjoy eating out and dont need a particular sequence of dishes on the table you will enjoy New Shanghai in Brisbane.

Service appalling. My meal came, my wife's nowhere to be seen. Asked 5 times on progress of her meal.(coming,coming). I finished mine & hers arrived. I had crispy skin chicken noodle soup - bland soup/dry chicken. Disappointing & I suggest looking elsewhere!

Had noodles with pork and veggies. Was ok. Service was bad.
The Food Extinguisher
After being separated from my beloved Xiao Long Bao in Dintaifung, I was suffering from serious withdrawal symptoms. So where's the next best place to go to in Brisbane? New Shanghai, which can be found next to the Food Court at Queens Plaza. Make sure you don't go during peak hours unless you don't mind waiting as there is ALWAYS a very long queue. There is a large window at the front where you can see your Xiao Long Baos being freshly made.     Walking through New Shanghai is like going through a time machine. With its antique dark rosewood chairs and stools, cobbled stone alleyways, and ancient red lanterns, it feels as if you've travelled back in time to Shanghai in the 1930s. The old Chinese artwork and the rusty peasant's bicycle at the front of the store adds to the oriental ambience.   As soon as we were seated, we were given the menu as a placemat. There were a variety of options available, but it was a no brainer. We immediately ordered their signature dishes, Xiao Long Bao ($7.8) and Pan Fried Pork Buns ($10.5).   The Xiao Long Bao here is a very big hit. The mince was smooth and juicy with a hint of subtle sweetness and ginger, and with each bite, delicious pork broth bursts out with flavour. The skin was too thick for my liking, but my fellow Food Extinguisher preferred it as the soup was less likely to explode. It was a pity that we weren't provided with shredded ginger, as it is one of the traditional complements for this dish.      The Pan Fried Pork Buns was also very enjoyable. The pork was tender, and the buns were light and fluffy. The best part was the crispy golden bottom. These kind of buns are traditionally pan fried, but the one

Other than Sushi, my second life passion is Shanghai Food. Having gone to cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Toronto, it was fairly apparent that Brisbane was quite lacking in its offering of authentic Shanghai Cuisine. It may be due to this, that there New Shanghai very popular, having to line up almost every time I go there.  It seems that there is a trend for a lot of the new Chinese Restaurants to have an 'outdoors indoors' look, where they set the place out like its a winding alleyway with cobbled steps, like 8 Street and like Little Red Dumpling. I dont mind it, but I would prefer to eat in a more well lit kind of environment. Upon sitting down, the menu is available for each person as a place mat.  Table water is also provided as a priority. The Hot and Sour Soup is my usual starting point. The soup itself isnt very hot or sour, but instead the end user is supposed to add their own vinegar and pepper to their liking. Many people are unaware of this, and end up questioning why the soup is not hot or sour enough. The Shanghai noodles were quite disappointing to be honest. The portion in itself was small, and the meat and vegetables were really quite minimal. Other than the soy sauce in the noodles, there wasn't much flavour. Xiao Long Bao is what I use to gauge the quality of a Shanghai Restaurant. This can be broken into three parts, the skin, the soup and the filling. The skin was a decent thickness, I have had thinner at Din Tai Fung (the ultimate dumpling destination), and the top was scrunched up to make it quite hard. But still, much better than the other offerings in Brisbane. Soup was in ample quality, and had a strong meaty and gingery taste to it. The meet itself was finely minced and had that gingery soup in it.  The pan fried pork buns are New Shanghai's brand name dish. Indeed it is one of the best pan fried pork dumplings in Brisbane. The fillings and soup are the same as Xiao Long Bao, a friend mentioned she found it unoriginal for that reason and

New Shanghai is a reasonably priced restaurant with an enjoyable variety of dishes. It is the perfect place to meet in the city with friends to share a few entrees and main dishes, which gives you an opportunity to have a taste of everything. I would highly recommend trying their xiao long baos and the other dim sims that they have on offer.
Liza Nuing
In summary, disappointing food apart from the wonton soup, friendly and efficient service, reasonably priced and comfortable seating.

Dumplings Galore! Image courtesy of Broadsheet.com.au Ever since Tom and I returned from Hong Kong we have become obsessed with dumplings. Chinese, Japanese..we aren’t choosy and with the recent explosion of dumpling restaurants around Brisbane we are clearly not the only ones! So I’ve compiled a list of Brisbane’s best joints to grab yourself a gyoza. Happy Little Dumplings With multiple locations around Brisbane, Happy Little Dumplings have you covered with a range of gourmet and vegetarian dumpling options, vietnamese rolls and steamed buns. I normally hit up the Barracks location (why leave your suburb if you don’t have to) and the service is always quick and friendly. The Chinese Chilli duck dumplings are to die for and you can follow up your dinner with a scrumptious Mango Pancake. Can you say yummo! Brunswick Social Cocktails, beer and wine? Check. I do not know what I was thinking but this certainly has cleared any curiosities I had. It was a interesting meal but it was a dish I am not keen to order any time soon.<br/><br/>If I were to come again I would probably choose the Shanghai noodle dish myself or even the Rice Cakes.<br/><br/>New Shanghai on Urbanspoon

I've never had Xiao Long Bao's before and I hear so many people say how yummy they are. I just thought they were just ordinary dumplings/wontons. and so I was wrong! Like dumplings/wontons, Xiao long baos can be filled with varies ingredients. We chose the traditional pork. With these dumplings, they have the ball of pork and they a have a little pudding of broth inside bathing the ball of mince. It's suppose to be really hot so the technique is to bite the top of it to let the heat filter out and then you just eat the whole thing in one go. It was yummy! For my first xiao long bao I loved it! you pretty much get similar taste to wonton noodle soup but in one bite. I could definitely go back for more. But I hear there are other restaurants just as good so I've yet to try.<br/>
Little Local Kitchen
This place is very popular, and usually there is a line (albeit a fast moving one), so be prepared for a slight wait. They do have a glass wall in the kitchen, so you can watch the nimble hands of the chefs at work, which helps pass the time. Also, the service is a little on the poor side, I assume due to the fact they are so busy – so be prepared to speak up if you want something, as it can be trying at times to flag down a staff member.<br/>

...I am happy to conclude that  despite the popularity of New Shanghai, it still remained faithful to its roots.  And besides, you know it's an authentic asian restaurant when the minute you walk in, 99% of the customers are asians themselves. RECOMMENDED FOR: a group of friends who aren't afraid to try out something different

In the upmarket and glossy Queens Plaza, this restaurant mimics Old Town China with its red lanterns, antique dark rosewood chairs and tables and grey stone cut floor. Being the only Queensland child and with its siblings spread across New South Wales, the hype has thrown the food-loving Brisbanites into a frenzy. Jelly, Sunjo, Pooch and I ventured to New Shanghai for lunch, keeping in theme with Cai Guo-Qiang’s ‘Falling Back to Earth’. The Shredded Kelp with Spice and Vinegar Dressing was tender, yet lifted by the crunch of shredded carrot and seasoned well with Sichuan chilli and vinegar. Lotus Root Stuffed with Sticky Rice was a sweet entree of deliciously braised lotus root and just enough sticky rice to leave one satisfied, rather than bloated. New Shanghai’s signature Xiao Long Bao is a must order here. Not only are they beautifully wrapped, but variations like Crab and Pork, as well as having the option of a steamed or pan-fried ver

The decor is refreshing, it is supposed to be a throw back to the old traditional Shanghair with stone floors imitation floors and ornate windows and decorations.   Besides that I don't really care I just want my dumplings. We order the New Shanghi Xiao Long Bao  ( Traditional Pork

I will definitely be backďťż to try more of the Dim Sum menu (with an army of friends, for sure), and hopefully this time, I can get a inside seating. The place is really affordable for Chinese in the city (I was pleasantly surprised when I got my bill). It's no Din Tai Fung, but it's a good place for Chinese if you can't be bothered to travel to Sunnybank.

A nice restaurant for eating out, for people who like dimsum and main meals as well. They provide a small variety of dimsums, mostly main meals. The waiters are friendly and feel free to ask for suggestions. Last but not least, it's really crowded during lunch time!
Sandra Nguy
Food was great and we even ended up taking home leftovers. Prices are very good for the quality and number of dumplings you receive. We stuck to the dim sum menu but maybe next time we’ll try some of the mains. Need to come with a handful of friends though, that way we can try more things!

The menu is very diverse and has heaps of traditional Chinese and Shanghai cuisine and extremely reasonable prices.......A standout for me the first time was the Braised Pork Belly, which was as good as any I have had, although on subsequent visits is been a bit average. Also a favourite are the Steamed Mini Pork Buns and the Pan Fried Pork Dumplings.......Cheap prices, vast quantity of food and authentic Chinese is definitely alright in my books

Here are their signature xiao long bao! A really classic Shanghaiese dish, they are paper thin dumplings with a sip of soup in there. The idea is that you pick up the dumpling delicately, place it on a spoon, nip open a hole, sip out the soup and eat the rest of the dumpling as is. How do they get the soup in there? They either freeze their soup or make it with a high collagen content so that when it cools down it solidifies into a gel. It is then combined with the rest of the meat portion and wrapped in a wrapper, when they get cooked the gel turns back in a soup. These were quite good, well seasoned, pretty to look at and just the right size.

i can't exactly class this place as a 'favourite' but i know that from the menu, i would definitely come back here for the Xiao Long Bao rather than the regular sort of food items

For anyone else who is familiar with Shanghai, the dark paved floors and walls in this place remind me of Xintiandi. There are also kitschy red lanterns, bunting, bamboo decor and old Chinese artwork that takes you back to Shanghai as it would have been like in the 1930s. It's all very cute and charming. For some reason they don't like to take bookings so you may have to wait for a table. Luckily the turnover was pretty quick and we only waited for about 10 minutes to be seated for a group of eight. One of the best perks is that the restaurant has a BYO licence. Having excellent manners when it comes to dinner etiquette, everybody showed up with their own bottle of wine to share. You can imagine the look on the waitress' face when we asked for eight ice buckets.

Fairly new to Brisbane is New Shanghai, the newest addition to an established Shanghainese restaurant chain in Sydney.  The ambience is one based on an old Chinese dining parlor, with wooden furnishings, traditional-looking decor, and walls of vintage posters and paintings. The thing about Shanghainese food is that it's carbs, carbs, carbs!  I love carbs, but it is a bit hard to control yourself when things taste good, and then it's all over.

Being based in Brisbane for 4 months for work, I was really missing Melbourne food. Overall Brisbane food is sadly nowhere as impressive as Melbourne or Sydney. So I was quite glad when I finally found this beauty. Located on the lower floor of Queen's Plaza, I was quite intrigued when every time I walked passed there was a queue there. Feeling the longing for Shanghai Street's XLB (Xiao Long Bao) I thought it was worth giving New Shanghai a go. Their signature dish here is the pan fried pork bun. I had to say it is worth being called the signature dish. This is the best pan fried pork bun I've ever eaten. I dare say it is even better than some of the actual Din Tai Fung restaurants in Asia. The bun was just the right thickness with the perfect crispness on the bottom while still being soft on the top. The pork filling was soupy and not too salty.  Drunken chicken was also quite nice but nothing special. The level of alcohol was not too overpowering which was nice to see for a change.

The dumpling kitchen had large windows to peer through while you waited. This however didn’t make for good viewing. Watching uncoordinated staff scrape away and stab with wooden spatulas at oversized mounds of raw mince doesn’t get my appetite going.

From the outside, you can see staff making dumplings with mounds of meat and flour being made into xiaolongbao an other Chinese dumplings - xiaolongbao being the official dish of Shanghai. With that being said, we had to order a serve of the xiaolongbao. We were seated at a large communal table with other diners. It was strange how the people sitting next to my group arrived after us, yet their orders were taken first. Anyway, I got the attention of

New Shanghai is  one of the few restaurant's serving the famous Shanghai soup dumplings in Brisbane.  If you are wondering what the heck are soup dumplings, then my friend you have not experienced dumpling heaven. Well that's if they are done correctly.  When I heard about this place opening in Brisbane that serves such parcels of pure delight I had to go.  The store is located in Queens plaza near the food court area and has long lines during lunch and dinner. So get there early or be prepared to wait. We got there early and only had to wait 10 minutes for a seat. Its easier if your willing to sit at a share table or have four or less people to get a seat.  The decor is refreshing, it is supposed to be a throw back to the old traditional Shanghair with stone floors imitation floors and ornate windows and decorations.   Besides that I don't really care I just want my dumplings. We order the New Shanghi Xiao Long Bao  ( Traditional Pork Soup Dumpling)

Called in for dinner - a quickish one. Started with the sweet and sour pork rib in dark vinegar sauce - so good. This was lovely - the thick sauce had tang. Then moved on to a serving of the steamed pork belly buns which were quite big.

'Shanghai noodle' stir fried with shredded pork and vegetables.. It had a dark soy sauce based and it had the right amount of sauce, the shredded pork and vegetables were okay but for me it was nothing special... It was a simple dish..'New Shanghai Pan Fried Pork Bun'.. pork filled bun pan fried at the bottom which you can see the golden brown colour bottom and topped with black sesame seeds.. One portion is 8 buns..

New Shanghai, a new chinese restaurant located in front of coles in Queens Plaza in the Brisbane CBD.. Seems to be the talk of the town these days and so, when I had the chance to try it one afternoon while in city, I popped by and had a look and decided to give it a try... Known for its Shanghai cuisine , this restaurant has travelled from Sydney to Brisbane soil...

I was ready to start devouring dumplings. First up on my list was Xiao Long Bao [#201] - a steamed mini pork soup dumpling. I had tasted my first one of these at a dumpling bar in Sydney, and longed for another since. Simply amazing! So, so impressed. Definately one to add to my favourites list But be very careful – the hot soup does burn, so try not to be too eager !<br/>xiao long bao new shanghai

came at noon and it was packed already! Luckily the wait wasn't too long (when we agreed to share table with other poeple) as they like to get people in and out quickly, so don't come here expecting a nice long lunch!

To be truthful, as much as I like 'xiao long bao', New Shanghai's weren't the best. It was a hit and miss that night. Some of them were juicy but some were dry. So, if you have all the juicy ones, then they will be quite amazing!
Melissa Loh
Considering the food is fairly decent and the location is right smack in the middle of the city, I would consider the portion size for the price extremely reasonable. Their 小籠包 (Xiao Long Bao) are not the best we’ve had, but it’s decent – I’d have them again.

Food-wise, the dumplings were, as stated previously “not bad”. Not fabulous, just not bad. The skin was quite thick – and oddly enough, the broth was fairly salty. I found it a little strange since I usually add a soya sauce vinegar concoction to my dumplings, but was unable to due to fear of sodium poisoning. The saving grace, overall, was the price – compared to many other places in the city, the dollar signs were low.
Brisbane Devoured
The decor immediately places you in another world, old school pictures of Chinese ladies with umbrellas, red bunting, stone path flooring and even an old bicycle outside the restaurant, its as if you are actually eating in an alleyway in Shanghai. There is a large open window at the front of the restaurant where you can witness dumplings being freshly prepared.
Strawbeari3
It has the same oriental style ambience as some other dumpling-style restaurants, with a window to the dumpling kitchen where you can watch the staff filling the dumplings.

I have mixed feelings about New Shanghai. On the whole, the food was fairly good and the menu contains quite a few authentic dishes. I like the decor and the concept of the restaurant but its popularity is a bit of a turn off. I get a Melbourne/Sydney vibe from it because of how busy it was the whole time we were there. The service was sketchy at best but at least our waiters weren't rude to us (which I had read online). They were disorganized but apologetic. I would recommend sticking to their signature dishes.

I love Shanghainese food! Tonight we went to New Shanghai and it’s really really good! We recently came back from Sydney and tried their chained restaurant at Chatswood Chase, we were so excited to hear they now set foot at  Queens Plaza!  Brisbane finally has some authentic Shanghainese cuisine! We arrived tonight at 7pm and there was already a very long queue! They don’t take bookings on Friday nights so we took a number and then wandered around DJ, after 45 minutes we finally got a table! New Shanghai’s  menu is printed on a sheet of paper, the typical Asian style, like  Fat Noodle’s .  We quickly picked our favourite  Shanghainese  dishes -  Xiao Long Bao (steamed mini pork buns) and Pan Fried Pork Dumplings. Surprisingly they were even better than the  Sydney’s Chatswood Chase shop! Both are very juicy with lots of soup inside! But if you compare the quality to the famous  Din Tai Fung  there’s still a long way to go, with every  Din Tai Fung’s  Xiao Long Bao  it has
