A rare chance in these WFH days to head into the CBD to run some errands, and took the chance to drop by New Shanghai in Queens Plaza for a feed and to redeem my free birthday dumplings.
We ordered:
* no.201 xiao long bao / steamed pork dumplings (8pc), $10.80
* no.405 zha jiang noodles (with ground pork sauce), $13.60
* no.413 shepherd's purse, shredded pork & rice cake stir fry, $17.80
And for my dumplings I chose
* no.218 prawn dumplings (10pc), $19.50
XLB is pretty much a standing order whenever we eat here - New Shanghai do one of the best we've tried in Brisbane. I also tend to like ordering one of the Shanghai style rice cake dishes as it's rare to find this elsewhere. Everything was really nice; the zha jiang noodles was a good sized serve and had heaps of the meaty sauce, and the prawn dumplings went really well with the accompanying dip which had a bit of chilli in it.
Service wise wasn't as good an experience. We neglected to bring water with us and my son was feeling thirsty so we asked for water twice from two different staff members, and neither resulted in any water. Eventually wifey had finished her meal and went next door to Coles to buy some groceries. She came back with a bottle of water and still no water from the restaurant. We also had some issues/confusion about redeeming the birthday dumplings voucher, resulting in me paying more than I expected to. But that was subsequently sorted out after I wrote to the head office with some feedback. So we'll happily visit again when we're next in town.

Amazing! Loved it. Been to most around the area and this is definitely one of my faves. Definitely try out.
Conveniently located in the city in Queens Plaza, this restaurant usually has a long line during lunch. Before you enter the restaurant you see people in the kitchen making the xiao long bao. Their signature dish. Most of the food here is decent. Though the service could be improved.
Thank you for the friendly service and for the food. I recommend visiting this place if you are hungry and looking for a decent place to eat.
Great food. Wanted to find <a href="specialero.com.au/">happy hour near me</a> and stumbled upon new shanghai
Pip Ondadip and I initially visited New Shanghai in Ashfield, Sydney and was obviously excited to try it here in Brisbane. The dining was was spacious and vibrant, customer service was also very welcoming and friendly.
We ordered a variety of dishes, ranging from xiao long baos, truffled xiao long bao, pan fried pork buns and truffle pot stickers.
Everything was obviously delicious and the truffle menu is a definite must try!!!!!
Love this place. Always has a line here which just goes to show how popular this restaurant is. Quality dumplings. Very timely too, I ordered and food came out in less than 10 mins! Staff is very accommodating especially when I arrived so late to the restaurant.
The pork belly ($22.7) was the highlight of the night. The sweetened soy sauce marinade was excellent and the meat itself was succulent and flavoursome due to the perfect amount of fat. There was also a decent amount of bok choy hidden underneath, which I appreciated. 5/5
The crispy skin chicken ($21.6) would’ve been good if the good parts were consistent. There were some wonderfully tender parts that contrasted beautifully with the skin, but there were also an equal amount of parts that were tough and dry. The sauce helped you swallow them down though. I also just realised that it says “chilli sauce” on the menu but it was pretty much just sweet soy sauce. 3.5/5
Mapo tofu ($15.7) was very mediocre. The ones we make at home with premade sauce tasted a lot better. There was too much soy sauce, hence the odd dark brown colour when it’s meant to be a vibrant red. There was also barely any mince. 2.5/5
Xiaolongbao ($9.9) & pan fried pork buns ($12.9) were nothing to write home about, but they were good. Never had XLB before so I don’t really have a basis for comparison though. 4/5
There was enough rice in two buckets for five of us to eat until we were bursting. Picture enclosed with cup for scale.
Left the restaurant satisfied and full.
Food here is tasty and the restaurant has a superb vibe for eating. Highly recommend the iced milk tea here. I think it beats some counterparts of it in Hong Kong tea restaurants. A little expensive though. Watch when you order.
The other week we were invited to sit in on a pairing that involved two very popular and delicious combos… Who can say no to dumplings and alcohol, especially when they are matched this well.I have been addicted to New Shanghai since I had my first Xiao Long Bao from here, then I became addicted to a few more menu items as well ( mainly rainbow beef, and shepherds purse, and jelly fish ❤)

OVERALL
Best soup dumplings in town, great atmosphere and food. Nothing to fault really.
AMBIENCE 5/5
Great atmosphere (see the photos). Really paints the picture of 20th century China. Wall decorations, chairs, table etc all start off an authentic experience
SERVICE 5/5
Lucky we didn’t have to wait, but a queue came up soon after. Service was good, and food came quickly.
PRESENTATION 5/5
The clay pot for the braised pork was pretty nifty, though sort of misrepresented how little the serving was (still acceptable). Dumplings fried looked great, and little soup dumplings in bamboo looked amazing.
TASTE 5/5
Best soup dumplings in town. Fried sticker dumplings also nice and crispy. Braised pork belly highly recommended, so flavoursome and melt in mouth, tasted great with rice. One bowl is actually pretty big.
Pricing although not Sunnybank prices, was on par for city dining as were serving sizes.
Came to New Shanghai at 12pm this is just before the huge line starts forming outside every day before the lunch rush. I ordered the Xiao Long Bao and the Hot n Sour Soup. I have never had Hot n Sour Soup but with my love for spice Vietnamese pho, I was hoping it would be somewhat like that. I received a thick soup with those tiny Chinese prawns, the soup tasted very unusual. It was not to my taste and I wouldn’t order that again. Shortly after my soup I received a big steam basket of dumplings. This was a dream come true. I demolished these fast and they were beautiful. The liquid oozing into your mouth and then biting into the dumpling ... incredible.
Great experience, love their service. One of the best asian cuisine in this area. Dumplings and noodles are delicious. And their interior is combined old asian style new western. Love that place
Fresh dumplings made on premises are so delicious! May be a bit of a wait depending on how many dumplings you order. Highly recommend their grapefruit drink and their shanghai soup dumplings
The food was fantastic, authentic and reasonably priced. The atmosphere and aesthetic is so nice. The staff are efficient and quick, and the service is great. Would definitely return. Vegetarian steamed dumplings were so nice!
I come here all the time (since 2015) and I have to say that I keep returning because they serve the best soup dumplings (XLB) in Brisbane. The price has increased from $7.80 when I first started coming to $9.90, but I return because it's still worth it. Much better than Dumpling Republic across the street, and the other food besides soup dumplings are good too.
Personally I really enjoyed the pan fried pork buns (菜肉包), Shanghai mini pork won ton soup (鮮肉小雲吞), the braised beef noodles (紅燒牛肉湯麵), crispy chicken noodle soup, Shanghai stir fried noodles, slow braised pork belly, and any salted egg yolk dish. I also really like the soy milk here. I think it's really good - definitely made through Chinese methods, so the taste is different to what you would find in the supermarket. Reminds me of the days when I lived in China. :)
The staff are all native Chinese speakers, and the service is quick and friendly. They've also gotten rid of their payment surcharge on cards, so you're paying for what you ordered unless you're using an Amex. My only point of criticism (which is out of their control tbh) is that if you're seated too far into the restaurant, there is no cell service.
Overall, this is always the restaurant I head to when I'm craving Chinese food. Highly recommended!
Xiao long bao!!
The kitchen is a big feature of this restaurant in the Queens Plaza food court with a large window so you can see the staff making dumplings. We tried the hot and sour soup and a Shanghai fried noodle dish which were delicious but the highlight of our meal was the xiao long bao (soup dumplings). We tried the classic pork and the pork and crab versions and they were both amazing - flavoursome, good dumpling skin and cooked to perfection. The service was pretty good too - we didn't have to wait too long to get in and once we had ordered, the food came out quite quickly.
Mum and Daughter date night in the city. No.1 daughter had been wanting to check out this place for a while. We got here around 6ish and the place was already busy. We were very promptly taken to our booked table. I loved that the menu also served as your placemat.
We ordered Xiao Long Bao, pork belly steamed buns and Crispy skin chicken withe noodles and a pot of Jasmine tea.
The pork belly steamed buns were the highlight of the night. Everything was so tasty and can't wait to go again.
Visited New Shanghai which I would say is very similar to the Taiwanese restaurant Din Tai Fung. The menu is very similar as are the flavours. We ordered the drunken chicken cold Shanghai noodles which was very tasty - a large portion of chicken, cucumber and noodles. The pork and prawn wonton soup was quite ordinary. The crispy chicken with a garlic and chilli sauce was very tasty however, the sauce did not seem to taste like chilli at all. Our favourite dish was the salted egg crispy tofu which was so unique and very tasty. There was a lot of salted egg flavour covering the tofu which was very soft on the inside but very crisp on the outside. This is a dish I would definitely reorder. The xiao long bao was very ordinary - nothing special but still very tasty. I think the wrapping skin is a bit thicker which was good as we had none of the dumplings break so none of the soup on the inside spilled.
The restaurant is quite busy from 5:30-7:30 so bookings are taken then but we had not booked and our table of 4 was seated within 15 minutes on a Thursday night.
Love coming here for authentic dumplings, hot and sour soup and green beans with fried rice. Would give 5* but sometimes they forget to come and take your order, especially if you sit outside. Don't let that deter you though! Also order the Taro milkshake. It's the best.
One phrase: best pan fried pork buns, period. These gems have juicy fillings, then crispy fried skin. Out of all sheng-jian-bao I've had in China and here this would be the tastiest. Otherwise we tried it's shaolong which is on par with Din Tai Fung, radish pastry which is slightly too deep fried for my liking, and wonton in chilli oil which is not as good as Din Tai Fung. But for it's buns alone, this place deserves a 4.5.
Hot authentic mix of Chinese foods, won ton soup was a nice consistency and volume and seafood hot pot was delicious (although I prefer mine without tofu) Staff were abit rushed and we had to share a table with 4 other people even though it wasn’t extremely busy. Good if you need a quicker dining out meal but not for a special occasion or special occasion sit down meal.
New Shanghai dumplings are my favorite lunch, I regularly go there with friends, I think I have tried everything on menu the pork steamed buns are especially my favorites very yum. Sorry mother but I think they are way better than yours :-)
New Shanghai has become one of my regular after uni/work dinner joints. The food is consistently delicious and is generally served quite quickly. I ordered the following:
Xiao long bao (8pcs) - very tasty, we always decide to order a serve (forgot to get a picture of these!).
Crispy skin chicken served with steamed rice, garlic & chilli sauce - a new dish that we tried, the sauce was delicious and the chicken was well-cooked.
Passion fruit tea - this iced tea is a favourite of mine, very sugary but always worth it.
The menu is reasonably priced, the decor is pretty funky and the restaurant itself is conveniently located in Queens Plaza. Definitely a great place to check out for dinner (they also have a happy hour earlier in the afternoon).
The xiao long bao (esp. the crab meat ones) and the wontons in chili oil, peanut etc sauce are amazing!!! We go back for them all the time. Pretty much every other dish we have tried here (meatball soup, pancake, fried rice) is decent, too. A solid place for Shanghainese cuisine all around.
Service can unfortunately be a bit hit and miss - some waiters are good but others can be very slow, and a few even seem like they are trying to ignore as many customers as they can. Point of note: they also close very early on Sunday (all chairs up on tables and lights off by 8pm - not necessarily a negative, but worth noting). Prices are a bit on the higher side for Chinese food.
None of that stops us from going back though. Love the XLB. :)
By far some o the best dumplings around. Freshly made with those little bursts of juice you get when you bite into each dumpling. There seems to be que everytime we go but it moves very quickly. The one dish that we always get with our dumplings is the crispy golden tofu with salted egg yolk. Highly recommended👌.
I LOVE the dumplings here and I ask for the peanut and chilli sauce on the side because I'm vegetarian and the veggie ones don't come with it but man it's delicious.
Also the peach green tea is to die for.
My only problem with this place is that they don't have more vegetarian options.
Quality! It Shouldnt Be That Hard! Love A Wonderful Mouth Full Of Wholesome FOOD!

We came here recently and it was a bit of a let down! There onion pancakes had no taste it hardly had any spring onion. The veggie dumplings where very nice however theY didn’t have much fillings in them...
my gd order stir fry beef with a steam bun. She was so shocked when it came out she thought it was going to be a stir fri with veggies ect not make it your self lots of little buns.... this is added on to my original review from about 2 years ago...
am so happy that New Shanghai has arrived in Brisbane Iv been to the one in Ashfield in sydney,
Iv only had takeaway vegetarian Dumplings, they where yummy, it's very busy in the restaurant I love the fact everything is made fresh and from scratch! Dumplings are the best!
The crab and Pork dumpling xiao long bao was not the nicest I found them very strong tasting and t had crab shell though it :-(
Loved the pan fried pork buns, very authentic flavour and delicious soup inside! Super fast service, the food arrived 2 minutes after we ordered. Not exaggerating!! Had to ask the waitresses for water but otherwise, would love to come back for some wontons and noodles :)
New Shanghai offers up Shanghainese dishes (surprise!) in both Brisbane and Sydney. We were pleasantly surprised to receive an invitation to try their new menu, so headed to Queens Plaza in the CBD on a Friday evening. It was packed, with quite a line outside, and while we were lucky to get to bypass the queue, one would certainly be well advised to make a booking in advance if a weekend visit was intended. There is the option of watching chefs fold and craft dumplings while you are waiting if you haven’t planned ahead of time though.
Great, pretty authentic (though quite expensive) Chinese food. Service is ok - we made a booking for 4 over the phone a couple of days before, but they wanted to seat us outside (makeshift-looking tables near Coles) instead of inside. Granted, they might have had a couple of reservations that Monday night, but it was only at our insistence to be seated inside that we were told we could wait for 10 minutes to get a small table for 4. Tables were also a little small and the space was somewhat cramped. Apart from that, decor was pretty cool and the food came very quick.
We had (L-R, clockwise): Mapo tofu, snow pea shoots, Xiaolong bao, green onion pancake, crispy chicken with noodle, rainbow beef, steamed Lion's Head soup.
Classic Shanghainese service food and decor, truly an authentic experience and I cannot stress enough how good the food is here - strong flavours and generous servings and at low prices. An extensive menu and good Chinese lager honestly make this one of my go to's in Brisbane. Food and service is fast and quick. I spent less than $100 on me and my partner including drink.
The food was amazing and definitely decently priced, no wonder there's a Lin every time I walk past. I loved the soup dumplings and fried pan dumplings too, I need to go back!! I even left my backpack there and they kept it for me until I came back
My first visit to the New Shanghai franchise and I had a good experience but not for the ones who are in a hurry.
+'ves
Ambience and service was great.
I wanted to try a seafood dish and was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the Shanghai Stir Fry Seafood noodle.
Dish was served in good time
-'ves
Not for the ones who are in a hurry. Had to queue for 20 mins to sit down
A bit pricy
Quantity not worth the price
Would defo go again to try different dishes
Its name might be New Shanghai, but nostalgia fills every corner of this restaurant - a vintage bike is parked at the sparkly clean glass frontage where you can watch chefs in uniform folding dumplings, old posters of 1930s Shanghai girls plastered at the shopfront as well as the bar and underneath your feet, a cobblestone paved floor that transports you to the alleyways in Shanghai’s old residential areas… New Shanghai does the theme well.
Dear foodosphere: let it be known I like me some dough-wrapped snacks. Today in the form of XLB dumplings. As these soupey, hand pleated morsels of delight swelled & burst, so did my heart. (But you know, without the soup part.) The soft, thin casing held a light yet satisfying pork broth.
There were other dishes this lunchtime - Shanghai noodle soup, crispy tofu with salted egg yolk & veges with oyster sauce. These were also very good.
I could watch the deft hands at work out the front crafting the precious dumpling parcels of joy allllll day. But sadly I had to return to work.
I am obsessed with new shanghai's xiao long bao. I love how you can see the workers making the dumplings/noodles through the big windows at the front. The dumpling dough is cooked very well and it's not too thin or too thick. The pork filling is generous and very flavoursome. I also really enjoy their pork and chive dumplings which come with an interesting sauce with chopped peanuts and chive oil.
Update: Came to try their crab and pork Xiao Long Bao. The skin was not too thin, but there were a few holes in a couple of the dumplings, so the soup had started to spill out, much to my disappointment. Flavour wise, is definitely go back for the pork Xiao Long Bao(which I tried on a previous visit) as the broth is much tastier.
Tried the drunken chicken cold noodles and stir fried noodles, both of which were really good. The chicken was really smooth and moist, the noodles springy and the sauce was a really good mix of vinegar and sesame. I'll definitely come back again to try out their 小笼包.
The best dumplings in brisbane. The shepherd's purse, pot stickers, xiao long bao and sautéed string beans with shrimp and garlic are all must-try. Gets really busy on a Friday/Saturday, but well worth the wait as it's all hot and fresh and so good!

I’ve been here twice lately – it’s that good. So good, that the friend who came with me the first time, she’s been three times! All within the space of a week. On our first visit we had pork xiao long bao with the pork and Chive steamed dumplings and both were incredible. Juicy and fresh – you can’t get enough of them! The shepherds purse and pork wontons with chilli, peanut and sesame sauce were different, I had heard through UrbanList to give them a whirl. The chilli and the peanut sauce are a unique combination and one to be tried for yourself!
This place always has a line out the front but it is worth the wait! The dumplings here especially the soup ones are awesome. Great variety of dumplings, noodle dishes and sides.
On my friend's recommendation we came here for lunch, and we came early to avoid the long queues that begin before 12pm.
We ordered xiao long bao, pan fried pork buns and pan fried pork dumplings. They were all done quite well (the pan fried pork dumplings were slightly overcooked but I liked them that way), and were tasty with the chilli sauce, soya sauce and vinegar.
The xiao long bao had a nice thin skin, and the pan fried pork buns had an excellent crispy base. The fillings for all three dishes were flavourful.
Overall, a very satisfying lunch.
I've been having lunch at New Shanghai quite frequently over the last couple of years with work colleagues and I LOVE IT, they have the best xiao long bao that I have been able to find in Brisbane (albeit I stopped looking after I found these ones). The staff are very friendly and fast, and even with a huge lineup out the door you are still able to be in and out within the hour :)
It's mesmerising to watch the staff deftly make such delicate dumplings through the font window, go inside and be greeted by the smell of said delicious dumplings cooking. I found the food to be pretty good, but not my favourite. The serves are very large so to do proper dim sum style eating you need to bring a lot of friends (I think a group of 6 or 8 would work best)
For the first time in a decade, we decided to go low budget with our Valentines date. After considering a meal from Subway after getting off work at 8 pm, I decided we go some place where we can sit down to a meal. So New Shanghai it was that night. It was less busy than usual and we managed to snag our own table on our arrival (there's usually a wait and sharing tables is a common arrangement). I had my favorite noodles with toasty sesame oil, salty dried shrimp, and scorched scallions. This dish comes with a chicken broth, which somehow always seems lukewarm. We had steaming hot xiao long bao which is always well made and filled generously with broth. Excellent with sharp vinegar. Too bad they don't have the acidic red kind with shredded ginger. The clams weren't spectacular (measly tiny pieces that were obviously not live) but we knew that. A concession to satisfy our craving for clams in clam-less Brisbane. The jellyfish was very nice. It was extended with shredded turnips, but somehow, I do not feel cheated. The dish was cold, crunchy, juicy, and salted well. We also had soup with pork and shepherd's purse wontons. The broth was the same as the one served with my noodles but this was served hot. All in all, our Valentines date cost less than 2 main courses in a fancy restaurant. And we had no room for dessert.
This is my absolute favourite dumpling place in Brisbane. We go at least once a month. It's always busy but don't be turned off by the line out front it moves fairly quickly. But to avoid it we line up before they open to be in first. The restaurant is packed in tight with tables and stools/chairs so not a fancy place to sit and chat but good to get more people through quickly.
Staff can be hard to get a hold of because it's so busy. We have been there so much we have regular dishes and order as soon as they seat us before the staff leave.
Favourite:
- xiao long bao
- spring onion pancake
- pan fried pork buns
- pork and chive dumplings
- Shanghai stir fries noodles with pork & vegetables
- Yangzhou fried rice
We order a few things to have some variety and take the left overs home. Note you have to pay for take away containers (20 cents I think).
Reasonably priced. I have seen the review noting a cockroach in oil, we have never had any issues with the cleanliness of the restaurant, anything in our food and have never been sick.
First visit here required us to wait in a line for about 5 minutes before being shown to our table. The waiter bought menus and left us to peruse them. We chose garlic cucumber, chicken rice cakes, seafood hokkein noodles and pork dumplings. My companion and I also bought a soft drink each. The wait for our food was brief. All meals were delicious and the only criticism I have is that the garlic cucumber looked like it had been cut up by a toddler or chewed on before serving! The taste was still great. Highly recommended.
I come here about three times a month, sometimes more. I usually order Pot Stickers, Pan Fried Pork Buns and Xiao Long Bao. I find the Pot Stickers and Pan Fried Pork Buns are fresher when the restaurant isn't busy (i.e. generally any time that's not 11:45am-1pm). It seems they keep making the Pan Fried Pork Buns during peak time even before orders come in, so they come out hot but not as crisp. Still delicious though. I dislike boiled dumplings so would like to see more steamed dumplings on the menu. The steamed vegetable dumplings are good but not better than the before listed three dishes. Lychee green tea also goes down well with the dumplings, though is overpriced in comparison to bubble tea shops. Service is a little lacking and not a fan of the shared tables. Also recommend they start using table numbers, as there has been mix ups with which table gets orders and would also save the hassle of describing the table location when paying at the register. I wish there was a New Shanghai on the Southside as I hate accessing the CBD.
Authentic Shanghainese food at an affordable price.
Reminds me of the legendary Shanghainese restaurants in Ashfield.
The xiao long baos are good not great but given we are in Brisbane. This is amazing.
Although the line out the door may be off putting, it moves quite quickly so give it a chance. These are definitely the best dumplings in the CBD and the fact you can watch them make them in the shopfront window is a great touch. Service can be a little delayed because they are always so busy but I continue to go back because the food is so good. I wish there was more than one around the city. I would recommend the xiao long bao, beef and coriander dumplings and the milk tea.
There is always a line for lunch. Great place if you're after good quality dumplings. They all taste amazing. Services is quick and easy. The Xiao Long Bao however doesn't taste anything like in Shanghai which is a disappointment.
Great food and reasonable prices, location is also really convenient, service from a particular waitress was horrible though, apart from that, it was great, favorite dishes were the xiao long bao and the beef noodle soup
I came here with friends while walking around Queen Street, and saw the chefs making dumplings in the window and thought me must try it. We had to wait about 15mins for a seat but the food was certainly worth it. We ordered the salt and pepper calamari, pork and chive dumplings, pork special dumplings and the vegetable dumplings. For drinks we order the Virgin Pina Cola and the Cinderella mocktail. The food was absolutely delicious and came out quick once we had ordered. The dumplings had a soup inside along with the meat which added so much flavour. Seriously the best dumplings I have eaten.
Had lunch at New Shanghai today and I have to say very nice food and super quick service. We ordered a few different dumplings, spinach, spring rolls, crispy skinned chicken w rice and also some jasmine tea. All was thoroughly enjoyed and very tasty. I will definitely be back again. Also very reasonably priced.
This place offers a reasonable experience at an as to be expected price. Quite a lengthy wait to get it, a reasonable ambience considering the location. I would not rush back but would recommend to anybody wanting some reliable Chinese food.
Really enjoyed the experience here. The dumplings were delicious and the service is quick. A great night that is highly recommended and looking forward to going back soon.
Really loved the Yangzhou fried rice, the pan fried pork buns and especially the xiao long bao! There's always a long queue, but it's definitely worth the wait.
Their 小笼包 and 红烧肉 are definitely the best. I don't think New Shanghai is expensive at all. However, their 炸酱面was a bit disappointing. Overall, not a bad place to try out Chinese cuisine. The only thing bad about the place is that there's no service inside so you can't use your phone.
Is this Myer centre outlet. Don't let this little brother of Queens Plaza franchise go by easily. Xio long Bao. Pork. Panfried if u live to eat and not eat to live. Reminiscent of Shanghai pilgrimage that Bourdain led us. English menu here though. Nip the top suck the juices and eat with some mandatory juice on said face.
The only reason we stopped by this food court restaurant was because we were starving and the menu was decently appealing. Our orders were quickly taken, and within 10 minutes, we had our meals, which included pork belly, fried rice noodles, and steamed buns. Whilst the pork belly and noodles were average (but good for a food court), the buns were just little mouthfuls of joy. Well worth a few minutes to stop by and grab a little moment of happiness.
I've been this place for a couple of times. The signature dish, xiaolongbao, is definitely standing out. The other types of dumplings are also very special and well cooked. However, some of the Chinese dishes, which severed cold, are not very tasty. The tables are set a little crowded.
Love the atmosphere in this place. I feel as if I'm in a Chinese street. Buns and dumplings in this restaurant are simply phenomenal. The pan fried pork buns are tasty, soft, and crunchy and is a definite must-try! XO sauce fried rice is also sensational, delicious and balanced. I definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone!
The dumplings here are always amazing and flavoursome! I love the shepherds purse with chilli and peanut oil and definitely recommend it! Of course the xiao long Bao and fried pork buns are a must have every time! The calamari is too salty and soggy so it's definitely a miss, but that's to be expected at a dumpling restaurant. The table was too wobbly but the service was quick and easy!
We enjoyed our night at the New Shanghai. I was initially concerned when I saw a large queue of people waiting to go into the restaurant. We didn't wait long at all as the service was quick and efficient! We got to eat delicious pork buns, dumplings and noodles. I enjoyed the atmosphere as well.
Greatest xiao long bao in brisbane! im not exaggerating, its juicy, flavoursome and tender! Great service and price. they wont disappoint you................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
I've been to New Shanghai in a couple of cities now and each time it is an awesome experience with some of the tastiest dumplings you'll find anywhere. Great value for money which will leave you extremely satisfied
New Shanghai is one of my favorite places to eat in the City. It does get very busy at lunch time, so I would suggest getting there right on 12:00pm or after 1:30pm. They now also have a take away New Shanghai in the Myer Centre which has a good selection of options available. My top 4 dishes from New Shanghai are:
1. Shepherds purse and pork wontons with chilli oil, peanut and sesame sauce
2. Steamed Vegetarian Dumplings
3. Salt and Pepper Calamari
4. Sauteed Spinach and garlic
One of my favourite places to dine if I'm craving dumplings or pan fried pork buns filled with soup. I have visited this place a few times and the food has always come fresh. The price is average and not too dear. Service is average, if not, a little on the negative side as some waiters don't speak fluently- so they're not very 'chatty friendly', also, when it gets busy, prepare to share tables with other people.... for me, I'm willing to put aside these details because of my love for their soup dumplings and pork buns
It was a decent experience. We came 5.30 to avoid the queue. Ordered pork n chive dumpling which was good unfortunately it came after the main dish. The crispy skin chicken was nice and crispy. The soy garlic chilli sauce was also good. Mapo tofu was decent. Unfortunately the rice was hard to swallow
Had a good night at the New Shanghai. Food started coming after 3minutes of ordering. 2nd time at New Shanghai but I am sure it was nicer last time. Definitely had better dumplings than this place before but none better than this place in Brisbane so far.
I've been here a few times .The dumplings are very tasty!! I especially like the ones with the peanut butter sauce, and the all time popular pan-fried mini soup baos. The price range is pretty exy for dumplings but standard for the location.
Everytime we come to New Shanghai... There are three key dishes we always never fail to order: the Xiao Long Bao, Deep Fried Pork Buns, and the picture attached, prawn wonton tossed in chilli and peanut sauce (it's not actually that spicey) and without fail we are always left happy and giddy. The only reason this place has lost a bit of points from us is because of its service (employees look like they're there because they have to, they don't seem like they care)
It's always busy here so be prepared to wait in line! My all time favourite has to be the Crispy tofu and salted egg yolk. I don't know anywhere else that serves this but it is a must try! The stir fried rice and noodles are very oily, and although they say there is meat in these dishes, there is very little included. I would only go back for the tofu and dumplings.
This place is great!! Very busy at lunchtime but so worth waiting. I love how it's set out like you are actually sitting in the street in Shanghai and also love how the little lady's are making the dumplings behind a the window for you to watch. I would highly recommend ordering dumplings and the sticky pork belly.
Love this place!!! The food is always on par. There can be a bit of a wait to get seated but once your seated and ready to go it is worth it. I am hooked on the fried pork dumplings till this day 😋
I have been occasionally eaten here with my friends for the past 2-3 years. Always love the Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings). They also have great main dishes and a decent drink menu too. The cost isn't decent for what you get :)
nice dumplings and very reasonable price. Not a romantic place for couple, but if you want some real Chinese dumplings and atmospher, here is the place.
Pork dumpling and rice cake are good.. Shanghai stir fried noodle with seafood is a big no no.. They basically used udon which make me feel cheated.. Apparently that is a recommended dish.. Had pan fried pork bun which is not in the photo.. Taste good but the dough is not what i was expecting... It is way too thick.. Fried pork bun dough is supposed to be thin.. But this one literally is a bun..
New shanghai never disappoints!! My friends and I always order the panfried dumplings because its always crunchy and tasty. Their lychee frappe and honey green tea were the best we've had
Possibly the best pork dumplings ever, they are soft and fluffy but still have a crispy bottom! The braised pork belly was nice but maybe not the best pork belly I've ever had.
Nice pan fried Xiao long Bao. Average priced $30 per person, located right in the city centre next to david Jones. Definitely going back for more.
Pretty good even compared to the genuine stuff from SH. Like their varieties in types of noodle and dumplings. Worth coming back again! The location is also convenient for anyone wanting to try good Chinese food in the city
One of my favourite places to go in the city. Awesome Asian cuisine, friendly and quick service and pretty reasonable prices. Would recommend to everyone for eat in or take out
Average. Look i rated this place a "like" because the food was good and not over priced. However I don't see what the fuss and the large lines were for.
Shanghai style. Good rustic shanghai style food. The place is always full.

You take my money? Ok ... just Ok. This is a little surprise on this side of town that is not know to have good Yum Cha. However, my Obesity Senses were tingling as my trolley boy roll my fat butt pass this place. I was so full of Xiao Long Bao and prawn dumplings that the wheel on the trolley went flat and had to be crane lifted up the stairs.
I love this place. This place is great, i've been here a few times and will definitely keep coming back. Service is quick, and efficient - nothing amazing but nothing to complain about either. Prices are decent and the decor is lovely. its loud, not very intimate but at the same time a fun place to be with friends and family. you get to watch the chefs make the dumplings through the window which is always entertaining.
Stand out from all my visits would be the xiao long bao, pan fried pork and shrimp steam bun (they taste very similar to the ones i had when i was in Shanghai) and the lychee martinis.
Last time i was here, they offered a great "happy hour" lunch deal which i though was great value for money.
Really good Xiao Long Bao. Love the food here. The gyoza type dumplings aren't as good, I think the skin is too thick but the Xiao long Bao is brilliant.
The shepherds purse with the peanut butter is also good but I wished they were more spicy with more of a kick. Still yummy though.
I also like the prawns with the salted duck egg. Very rich and morish.

Good. Service could be a little better. Should have serving cutlery for every dish
Best dumplings in Brisbane!!!. I've searched high and low for decent dumplings! This place definitely met my expectations! The food was awesome! Maybe don't go there during peak hours if you're impatient and hangry, because you will have to wait. However if you don't have anywhere to be, definitely, go there, as it is well worth the wait! And affordable!
I loved the food, but please slow down on hanging the dishes over...order 8 dishes, came out nearly all at the same time...
Great buns. Best buns in Brisbane at the moment. anything else on their menu is just average though. go there for their buns, you won't be disappointed.
Worth the wait. Go early and bring a large appetite. Great food.
Casual dining. Good food.. Took my wife there for dinner last Thursday. It was the first time I'd been inside, normally queues are pretty long. Anyway, it's very casual dining (reminded me of Wagamama) and the food was tasty and pretty timely. Would go back.
Dumpling and Pork Ribs. The dumplings we had here are as good as any we have had in Hong Kong and the pork ribs were better than the ones we had in orange County. The service was a bit too quick but the food and the prices definitely made up for anything else. Going for lunch we couldn't believe how quickly it filled up so unless you like to qeue think about what time you show up here.
Review. I'm a big fan of the food here. The xiao long bao are delicately made, juicy and full of tender pork. Last time, I tried fried tofu in salted egg yolk. The tofu cubes were perfect, crisp outside and tender inside, in an intense, grainy yellow sauce - exactly the sort of new taste that's such a refreshing addition to the "traditional" Aussie chinese. The bean sprouts come served in a beautifully textured hill shape.
The service is kind of brisk and institutional, though efficient, and there's often a queue. But if you go early, it's worth it.
We went here for dinner last week mid week and had a great night.
Have been before and liked (voted positively last year). We have our favourites on the menu (fresh Chinese vege, pork belly, spicy soups etc) and had another good experience last week. Larger group but we were seated in time and had a good waitstaff.
Did not accept amex.
What have they done so far !!! What a great value of foods !! I am just speechless in every single times during each meal time !!
Go for your favorites. We go here regularly, not for the service but for the great dishes we are now slightly addicted to at a great price !
1. Xiao Long Bao - usually hot and steamy and full of broth and flavour
2. Pan fried pork dumplings - crispy and slightly charred on the bottom - yum
3. Steamed buns with meat and cucumber - fill your own with these tasty treats.
We occasionally go outside our comfort zone and order something else, but generally come back to these or another dumpling. If your heart specialist is on standby try the soy pork! The chinese tea here is good. Recommend going just outside peak times when it is still busy but not over run and avoid the really quiet times as they seem to be mostly getting prepared for the busy times again.
Tasty Dumplings! The prawn wonton, pan fried pork dumplings and crispy chicken are delicious! About a 5 minute wait on Saturday, service is adequate, you're here for the food not for people to ask you every 5 minutes if you're ok! Once you order your dumplings they leave you alone to enjoy the food coma!
This is definitely one of our top the places in Brisbane to go for Xiao Long Bao, and the pan fried option is a great alternative - definitely worth queuing for. The service is adequate, but I've you've already ordered it can be difficult to get any more attention from wait staff, so might not be up to some people's standards but the good is worth it.
AWESOME. Terrific place. Worth the queue.
Nice stop in the city. The traditional xiao long pau was good, not too fatty and in fat really nice soup.
Spicy and sour soup was well seasoned and the cold dish of pork ribs yummy too...
This will be my new stop in the city from now on.
Great food, and you feel like you're sitting on a street with the restaurant decor. Recommend the pan fried pork buns, shanghai noodles, crispy skin chicken (boneless!!), salt & pepper squid and pork belly. Service is average but you shouldn't expect excellent service at Asian restaurants. Prices reasonable for the city location. The place gets very busy during peak lunch and dinner times so best to go before then (eg. 5.30pm weeknights).
EXCELLENT food, GREAT service!. I am confused about the comments here about "bad" service. If you want in your face staff fawning over you and asking you "hows your food" every 5 minutes maybe you should go eat at Grill'd. The staff here are great and so is the service - no nonsense, they take your order right away and are very fast bringing out the food. There is nothing more annoying than chatty obnoxious staff who harass me every 5 minutes to try and push me to order something extra.
Anyway the food is BRILLIANT. This is a DUMPLING restaurant so their specialty is dumplings which they do amazingly. I come here every week without fail because I am addicted to their pan fried dumplings and steamed pork and cabbage dumplings. The noodles are great too! My main issue with this place is that everything on the menu is so delicious that it can be hard to decide what to order. The prices are also ridiculously cheap!
Really enjoyed dinner here. Nice dumplings and served quickly. Definitely will come back with my friend, and highly recommend people to come to try.
Came here for dinner (fri night) bit of a line up, but was worth it! Really enjoyed it. Will definetly be going back!
Successful Chinese food offering. This is the fifth New Shanghai store and they're certainly onto a formula that's popular and it's not just with the Asian food bloggers. Second time we've been here - had xiao long bao with the crabmeat (tasty), pan fried pork buns (yes!), shallot pancake (have to say this was on the small side). Had the stick rice cakes with XO sauce (get this), and although we've not had it before the Shantung crispy skin chicken - this was the revelation versus the hundreds of times we've had it in Cantonese restaurants where there's always the risk of food poisoning from the chicken not having been fully cooked through. Very pleased with the crispy skin and lots of dark meat - everybody was impressed.
Like this place - note the queues.
Cheap. Tasty. Convenient. Quick.
Taste OK. Taste was good but nothing special...
8/10. Cool place and delicious dumplings. The only complaint would be that sometimes I find it hard to get served, the waitstaff are always in such a rush they overlook you when you're trying to get their attention. I would recommend one or two more waitstaff but apart from that, great!

Best Chinese Food in Brissy. I lived in China for 3 years, travelled around China extensively and the food in New Shanghai is the best, most authentic Chinese food I've had in Brisbane. Yes, better than what you can get in Sunnybank. Worth lining up. Shame it is next to a hideous food court and Supermarket, even if it is in Queen's Plaza.

The food here is quite alright, although I haven't tried alot of dishes but their dumplings remain very traditional and was done quite well. Some dishes were above average but still got their basics together. I like this place with very nice decorations and I rate it 6.5/10
Great Venue -Love the crab noodles. I really like new shanghai. The service is only ok, but the food is a great price point for the location. Quick and easy and a great fast escape when in the city. Food is always really tasty. I particularly like their crab with sliced noodle. I have been three times now.
Great venue and great food!. We had a lovely meal here. This is a really unique venue - I love the decor. One of the best Chinese places in the CBD!
Great dumplings in Brisbane CBD. Have been here multiple times now. Definitely one of the best dumplings in Brisbane, and the fact that it is located in the city is Plus! Try the Xiao Long Bao & Shanghai Dry Noodle with szechuan sauce, a fav for hubby & I. Just make sure you are not eating the dumpling straight after it has been served and the broth will burn you!
Some waiters and waitresses here are rude. Two of them were having a lovely chat while i had my hand up to order for a good 2 minutes. Food is good though.
Yummy but needs work on service. Really nice selection of food and the servings are substantial with an above average price point, there's always a queue to dine here and if you come for the food, you won't be disappointed. You may be disappointed by the spotty service though. I would dine in again but try at a less busy time perhaps.
Yum and good value. This place has great dumplings and mains!!! We always find them to be huge serves and great value! Service is fast (sometimes abrupt but doesn't bother me)! We wish this place wasn't in city so we could visit more easily!!! Yum!!!
Dericious. Nothing bad on the menu.
So yummy. Number 203 of the menu is to die for
Have been wanting to try this place for ages! As we waited in line for 15minutes, a waiter came out and moved down the line telling those waiting that the cooker was broken and they could only offer 5 dishes on the menu. How was this possible when the tables inside were still being served all sorts of dumplings. We'd paid $15 to park so wasn't turning away now. Decided to risk it and wait in line. And surprise surprise when we were seated 5 minutes later, there was no mention about the cooker being broken. What the...??? We were however informed of a 20minute wait for the food which was fine by us. So I'm still puzzled as to why they didn't tell us while in line that there's a bit of a wait instead of making up some ridiculous story that the cooker is broken. Are they seriously trying to shorten the queue by making up such ridiculous nonsense. Don't think the owner would be impressed. Service was appalling but enough winging...Dumplings are amazing and very well priced! The pan fried pork buns (with a small amount of soup inside each bun) are to die for! Also the pork and chive dumplings are a must.
Some decent dishes. Waiters rude.. Don't expect good shanghai dumplings. The steam ones. No even close to good actually, They really need to work on making better shanghai dumplings.
Good thing about this place is the pan fried pork buns. Veggie dishes are pretty decent too.
Service is definitely lacking. The guys working there are really rude and do not bother looking around to help customers. One guy just quickly looked away when we asked for some service. The guy who was super skinny moderate height with glasses gave us the most dirtiest look ever and told us to wait. Also the waiters and waitresses are mostly behind the counter chatting away. Even when you wave your hand for some service they give you this look like we are disturbing their important conversation.
They are really lucky that their food is good otherwise wouldn't go back because of their waiters lack of customer service skills.
Finally Brisbane has a Shanghai restaurant that serves some decent edible dumplings that aren't overly expensive.
But this restaurant better watch out if another Shanghai restaurant open next door who serves good shanghai dumplings because I'd rather eat there.
Like everyone else says: food good, service not so good
The dumplings are amazing!!! have had two great experiences at new shanghai. Very tasty, fresh, great servings and every thing you'd want from asian dishes. Spring rolls are also very good. Love it, my favourite dining experience in a while...
Go for the dumplings!. Love the dumplings with soup inside! Don't expect great service but the food is delicious and I always leave satisfied!
Note that their minimum eftpos is $30 which is a bit strange but I have mostly exceeded that amount with 2 diners.

Don't wear a white shirt ^_^. Waited in line for this at lunch but got a seat very quickly.
the New Shanghai Pan Fried Pork Bun and Pan Fried Pork Dumpling came out very quickly and were so juicy that I would not recommend to wear a white shirt to dine at this place ^_^ haha
I was in a group of 6 for my first time here. Lovely atmosphere with the family style dining. Extensive menu but we didn't even make it past the beautiful hand made dumplings! I can't wait to go back again! Simply amazing
New Shanghai. Yes the service can be hectic and there is always a long queue. Get over it and you get good quality buns and dumplings. I can't say the a la carte dishes were as god as their buns and dumplings as we ordered some less than impressive dishes. Will try and stick to the staples next time. Prices are reasonable for a city restaurant.
Pork belly braised overnight in sweet soy sauce was super tasty. Would come back just for this dish. It came with bok choy. The fried pork bun was average & the deep fried pastry shallot & ham was too dry. Very busy during lunch. Stuck seated next to the line of people who are paying for their meal. That wasn't cool.
Shanghainese girl likes it:). Not all the food there is Shanghainese but at least the food that I like all tasted nice! Miss Shanghai a lot so I always go there and eat. Nice food, nice place.
Reasonably priced. Definitely room to improve in the soup dumpling as there is not much soup in them, was hoping to relive my soup dumpling experience when I was in New York. Overall it was a nice dining experience and would come back.
Seriously good dumplings, best I've had in Brisbane. Go there!
Wonderful SXLB however unnacceptable to see bar staff twice (at least) tasting cocktails / frappes with spoon and putting SAME used spoon in for colleague to taste, then using SAME spoon to serve it with, THEN using straw to suck out from overflowing glass!!!
Great dumplings and atmosphere. Having eaten dumplings for several years in Greater China, I particularly recommend their steamed 'xiao long bao' (i.e. little dragon dumplings) that are served in the bamboo dish. Dumplings are very fresh, the dumpling skins were nice and thin (i.e. not thick and 'doughy' like some places) and fillings were very tasty. Great atmosphere with beautiful decor! The hot and sour soup was a bit average, 'tho. Service was friendly but rather slow, we had to repeatedly ask for our drinks. I recommend that you get in before noon since there are long queues for lunch.
Tasty and cheap. I had the xiao long bao, shephards purse with pork and shallot pancake shared with a friend and was impressed with all of them. The edamame was horrible though! Not sure what was going on there but it was overcooked, slimy sitting in a puddle of salty water. Other than that everything else was good, service leaves a little to be desired but not as bad as lots of other reviews, everything was well presented and very good value for money. The setup is very cute, good ambiance. My only complaint on serving sizes would be that 10/12/15 dumplings is a LOT if there are only two of you, would be good if you could get these dishes in half sizes or something.
Loved it. We beat the lunch time rush by going at 11:30 and got seated straight away. Unsure on portion size we ordered the vegetarian dumplings, drunken chicken and rainbow beef to share with plenty left over. Fast and friendly service, will go back again for sure.
Authentic and overpriced. Lived in Shanghai for 3 years and always craved staple items like basket buns (xiao long bao), pan fried buns and wontons ever after. I'd agree with the Frankie Gao review below. It's nice to finally find a place in the CBD with good Shanghainese food. But only if you're after the most basic items, nothing fancy. It is a little over priced, considering what you're paying for, but I guess that's the common trend in Brisbane downtown. Service is hit or miss, there's usually a wait (up to 20 mins), sometimes servers are prompt other times slow. Atmosphere and decor is awesome though and the giant window into the kitchen where they make the buns is what would you see in old Shanghai restaurants.
Had assorted types of dimsims and were all flavoursome and fresh. Would definitely return.
Love it!. Been here many times since it opened, and I have to say I adore it! I do concede that some of the options on their menu aren't that great, but their actual 'Shanghai'-based options are excellent. Perhaps better than all the other stores in Brisbane attempting to sell these: Xiao Long Bao (mini pork dumpling), the pan-fried pork dumpling, the pork bun, etc.
Unfortunately, there isn't that much seating inside, so there is a long line at lunch, and the service isn't that great, but still. The food is well worth the low prices! Definitely will continue to keep coming.
Will visit again.... Heard mixed reviews about this place but really enjoyed it. Will go back again.
Perfect for the lowly student!. For cheap, tasty eats, this place is a must! The dim sum menu is extensive, with prices ranging to fit all types of budgets. My partner and I ordered a noodle dish each, which was too much! A perfect outcome for students! We had the pork and Chinese cabbage dim sum, and we would have been perfectly content eating those all night long, absolutely delicious. Quick service means food delivered to you in a flash but no customer service. I will be returning and will bring my friends with me.
Mobile Review. Nice steamed dumplings can't find a better one in Brisbane yet? Sour and spicy noodle is ok , it will be good to have more vegetables in there.
Nice steamed dumplings, at a reasonable price. I have not tried rest of menu as it seems a little overpriced....and I like the dumplings.
Average XLB. Price-6, Service-5, Food-5, Atmosphere-7,
XLB was too small and not enough soup inside
True authentic shanghai dishes. all excellent flavour & quality. You need to ask about the menu and look at the popular dishes everyone is eating.
Where did this little gem appear from? Service bit amateur, but food was fantastic. An Asian restaurant can be judged by the amount of Asians eating there, needless to say it was full. Can't wait to go again

Pretty decent Chinese food!. Been reading the mixed reviews on New Shanghai and I figured I should give it a try. I had the drunken chicken with cold noodles, braised tofu skin and the xlb with crab meat. The prices were decent and somewhat fit with the amount of food presented on the plate.
The xlb with crab meat was delicious and had the right amount of broth which was not salty at all and the pastry skin was thin. Good! The drunken chicken could have been better in terms of getting the rich flavour of the drunken sauce, cold noodles were nice. Braised tofu skin was the best, I could eat a few more plates of it.
All in all, decent food at decent pricing and at a nice location.
Decor look nice but not the all the food is the same. Steam XLB and pan fried versions were both good: thin pastry, plenty of soup, nice soft meat. The hot sour noodle soup was neither hot or sour. The shredded beef and bun can be better especially the bun, needs to be more fluffy. Seasame ball in rife wine soup wasn't appetizing but the shaved ice red bean and ice cream was. 6/10, has potential, just need to refine a few things. Give it a try, prices are reasonable for cbd
Bang for bucks. Had dinner Friday night, must say get in early... Seated fast, food was great, didn't charge for corkage. walked out full and happy, could not believe how well priced it was.
Delicious!. My friends and I dined here last week and loved it! The pan fried pork dumplings were absolutely amazing with the broth instead - definitely the best dumplings I've ever had =) My favourite main dish was the rainbow beef - an explosion of delicious flavours that everyone really enjoyed. And drinks-wise, we all got the lime chiller which was so lusciously light and refreshing. On top of that, every single one of our other dishes were yummy. We definitely hope to go there again sometime soon!
Dumplings to die for. I love it when someone new comes to town and gives Brisbane a twist on eating. The dumplings are made by hand in the window ...perfectly.
The line to get in is long but worth the wait.
It reminds me of Melbourne and cute dumpling cafes you find down the lane ways. Yet it is in queens plaza opposite tea 2 near the food court.
If you like dumplings then you will love it here
We loved it..... My friend and I had lunch here on a busy Thursday. She had been before and loved it, this was my first time and I loved it too.
We both had dumplings - chicken and celery; beef and coriander. They were both lovely - and at 12 pieces per serve, we couldn't finish them, but so wanted to try...
We also had to try the kelp with chilli and vinegar (I think) and the cucumber and garlic entrees. They also were amazingly good.
I'm surprised at the bad reviews, considering we had four dishes and they were all great. The service was fantastic, and we were out by 12n (we arrived at 11am, and by 11.15am the place was almost full).
We usually go down to Sunnybank to Fortune Well for Sichuan, but this place will be on our list too!
Soup Dumplings!. I had given up getting good dumplings in Brisbane but the soup dumplings here are just as good as I've experienced in Melbourne. All the food looked great, I would happily try everything on the menu. Staff aren't rude at all, just busy.
Not too great but not too bad either !!. I think the dumplings(pan fried ones) are damn good for the price and quality and quantity.
Rest of the stuff is just ok.
Chick /beef/pork with rice are all average.
Probably a last min place to go on fridays after a light drinking session or casual dinner.
Finally, a step forward!. We were fortunate enough to be seated straight away after arriving at the absurdly early time of 5.30 on a Friday afternoon. Several plates of dumplings (both pan fried and steamed) later, plus hot and sour soup, cucumber and garlic salad, these avid dumpling lovers can conclude that this is really one of the best in Brisbane in terms of this type of food. Better than places in Sunnybank even. Value for money is actually not bad compared to, for example, the train wreck that is Fat Noodle. The (non-alcoholic) drinks list is great, and the tea is better quality than most. A real leap forward for Brisbane and highly recommended if you can get in!
Well food great like the atmosphere shame about the quality of the serving dishes all chipped
The partner and I came here last Friday night, to a rather long line. We were advised about a 10 minute wait, asked politely if we wouldn't mind sharing, and accepted cause we were pretty hungry! You aren't forced to share a table, but you can get seated faster if you do. The waiters are polite, if a little hard to understand at times, but the food came pretty quickly which was good. I had the crispy skin chicken, which was really nice, but sadly not crispy. Chilli garlic sauce made up for that. Partner got the crab with salted egg yolk, he said it was tasty but fiddly as it comes in the shell. We shared a serve of Xiao Long Bao, which I thought were on par with Din Tai Fung's in Sydney. I think this restaurant's strengths lie in it's dumpling chefs, every one is fresh made in front of your eyes. Freshly made apple juice was lovely, would be even better with some ice, as it was served warm. Overall a good experience, would love to go back for dumplings (and a cold brew if we can!)
Great night out. Was a bit dubious after reading some reviews but surprisingly it was wonderful!! Food came out very quickly, more then enough food for 3 ppl ordered a cple of plates of dumplings & 2 mains.. The shallot pancakes were a definite highlight, can't wait to go back for more!
Its alright.... Communal tables was pretty off-putting considering in Australia we are so used to having separate tables and all.
Food itself was pretty good and came out fast. Tried everything from shao long bao to the spinach cooked w/ ginger.
Taste was pretty good.
If you like this kind of food without having to wait ages and not have to share tables, take a look at bamboo basket @ southbank.
Mary, Mary, quite contrary.. For those of you who have followed my posts, you will know that I am quite the avid dumpling fan - in all its forms. The opening of New Shanghai was one of great joy for me as it's the closest dumpling sanctuary to my office :D
I've now tried it out a couple of times and I am pleased to report that I had none experiences of the most negative posts of the other reviewers on this page.
For me the best dumplings that I tried were the pan fried buns. The pastry is the right blend of chewiness, softness and crispyness. Never mind what I say, you will just have to try them for yourself!
Yes, I will admit that SOME of the staff are a little abrupt but on the whole I found them to be quite friendly. You will ALWAYS have one or two disgruntled staff when you have a restaurant full of Asians.
The decor falls somewhere between Shanghainese chic and kitschy Asian. They look like they had an excellent designer work on the interior but then it all got spoiled by someone hanging up some cheap plastic flags and Chinese adornments.
Atmosphere is a-buzzin; just as you would expect at such a fast-paced eatery. Like.
Verdict: Value for money is quite good. I had a good time each time I came and the food comes out quite quickly (and I was quite hungry both times). Compared to Bamboo Basket, you get the same thing for exactly HALF PRICE!!! Compared to Taste Gallery, you get the same thing, for the same price BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO TRAVEL TO SUNNYBANK!!!
Typical Asian service but the quality of the food is outstanding. The dumplings are fresh, the noodles is well balance with flavour and the broth for the soups are simple but very nice. Best of all the pricing is very good, for 4 of us it only cost $60 and we even has to take some left overs home
Finally. I've been a long time patron of NSH at Chatswood Chase and after recently moving to Brisbane I was so glad to see that they had opened here. After reading some of the reviews on here I think it's important to know how it all works so that you aren't too disappointed/frustrated etc.
- You will need to line up in peak times. Tell the person at the door how many people in your group and they will give you a number. They will call out the numbers in no particular order depending on how many they can seat. In Chatswood they used to do this but you now write the number of people down and take the number yourself
- Sometimes you will be seated at a big table with another group. It's the only way to keep the tables turning in busy times.
- The service is average at best. You will more than likely need to put your hand up or go really out of your way to catch a glance of the waiters to get their attention.
- Their Xiao Long Bao (201) is the best in Brisbane. I've only found 2 other restaurants in Brisbane doing this - Taste Gallery at Sunnybank and Bamboo Basket at South Bank. They are both good but New Shanghai is better.. in every way.
- Meals will come out in any order they are ready. That includes rice, if you order a bowl of steamed rice it will probably come out first and sit there going cold while your other plates are prepared. I'd suggest waiting until you have everything and then rice then.
Fantastic food and average service.
Long wait for some devine food. Went there on a Saturday
Staff provided a number tag for the table of 8
Was advised there would be a 20 min wait
Waited for 30 mins
Waiter squeezed us onto a table meant for 5
Then the waiter took forever to come back to get our order so we ended up getting up and grabbing a waiter
food came out really quickly
food was super favoursome and juice buns. Soup spurting out!
value for money
nice serving sizes.
I would go back =) fingers crossed no long wait
Good and bad! Combo of bad service with amazing food!!
Delicious Xiao long baos are hard to find and they are very rare in Brisbane, so you can tell how happy I am to find a placethat makes it scrumptiously! The pastry is of great consistency, meat and soup nicely wrapped inside and cooked perfectly. A must try. Another dish we tried was the Szchuan noodles, this is a very tasty dish but the noodles itself could have been of better quality. But the flavours come well together and is refreshing.
Good Chinese food in CBD. .... Good Chinese food in CBD.
Xiao long bao are very good and appear to be made fresh in the kitchen.
Drunken chicken cold noodles are also good. Generous serving so good for sharing.
Could go on.. Must try.

After being separated from my beloved Xiao Long Bao in Dintaifung, I was suffering from serious withdrawal symptoms. So where's the next best place to go to in Brisbane? New Shanghai, which can be found next to the Food Court at Queens Plaza. Make sure you don't go during peak hours unless you don't mind waiting as there is ALWAYS a very long queue. There is a large window at the front where you can see your Xiao Long Baos being freshly made. Walking through New Shanghai is like going through a time machine. With its antique dark rosewood chairs and stools, cobbled stone alleyways, and ancient red lanterns, it feels as if you've travelled back in time to Shanghai in the 1930s. The old Chinese artwork and the rusty peasant's bicycle at the front of the store adds to the oriental ambience. As soon as we were seated, we were given the menu as a placemat. There were a variety of options available, but it was a no brainer. We immediately ordered their signature dishes, Xiao Long Bao ($7.8) and Pan Fried Pork Buns ($10.5). The Xiao Long Bao here is a very big hit. The mince was smooth and juicy with a hint of subtle sweetness and ginger, and with each bite, delicious pork broth bursts out with flavour. The skin was too thick for my liking, but my fellow Food Extinguisher preferred it as the soup was less likely to explode. It was a pity that we weren't provided with shredded ginger, as it is one of the traditional complements for this dish. The Pan Fried Pork Buns was also very enjoyable. The pork was tender, and the buns were light and fluffy. The best part was the crispy golden bottom. These kind of buns are traditionally pan fried, but the one
New Shanghai is a reasonably priced restaurant with an enjoyable variety of dishes. It is the perfect place to meet in the city with friends to share a few entrees and main dishes, which gives you an opportunity to have a taste of everything. I would highly recommend trying their xiao long baos and the other dim sims that they have on offer.
In summary, disappointing food apart from the wonton soup, friendly and efficient service, reasonably priced and comfortable seating.
I've never had Xiao Long Bao's before and I hear so many people say how yummy they are. I just thought they were just ordinary dumplings/wontons. and so I was wrong! Like dumplings/wontons, Xiao long baos can be filled with varies ingredients. We chose the traditional pork. With these dumplings, they have the ball of pork and they a have a little pudding of broth inside bathing the ball of mince. It's suppose to be really hot so the technique is to bite the top of it to let the heat filter out and then you just eat the whole thing in one go. It was yummy! For my first xiao long bao I loved it! you pretty much get similar taste to wonton noodle soup but in one bite. I could definitely go back for more. But I hear there are other restaurants just as good so I've yet to try.
...I am happy to conclude that despite the popularity of New Shanghai, it still remained faithful to its roots. And besides, you know it's an authentic asian restaurant when the minute you walk in, 99% of the customers are asians themselves. RECOMMENDED FOR: a group of friends who aren't afraid to try out something different
I will definitely be back to try more of the Dim Sum menu (with an army of friends, for sure), and hopefully this time, I can get a inside seating. The place is really affordable for Chinese in the city (I was pleasantly surprised when I got my bill). It's no Din Tai Fung, but it's a good place for Chinese if you can't be bothered to travel to Sunnybank.
Food was great and we even ended up taking home leftovers. Prices are very good for the quality and number of dumplings you receive. We stuck to the dim sum menu but maybe next time we’ll try some of the mains. Need to come with a handful of friends though, that way we can try more things!
The menu is very diverse and has heaps of traditional Chinese and Shanghai cuisine and extremely reasonable prices.......A standout for me the first time was the Braised Pork Belly, which was as good as any I have had, although on subsequent visits is been a bit average. Also a favourite are the Steamed Mini Pork Buns and the Pan Fried Pork Dumplings.......Cheap prices, vast quantity of food and authentic Chinese is definitely alright in my books
Here are their signature xiao long bao! A really classic Shanghaiese dish, they are paper thin dumplings with a sip of soup in there. The idea is that you pick up the dumpling delicately, place it on a spoon, nip open a hole, sip out the soup and eat the rest of the dumpling as is. How do they get the soup in there? They either freeze their soup or make it with a high collagen content so that when it cools down it solidifies into a gel. It is then combined with the rest of the meat portion and wrapped in a wrapper, when they get cooked the gel turns back in a soup. These were quite good, well seasoned, pretty to look at and just the right size.
From the outside, you can see staff making dumplings with mounds of meat and flour being made into xiaolongbao an other Chinese dumplings - xiaolongbao being the official dish of Shanghai. With that being said, we had to order a serve of the xiaolongbao. We were seated at a large communal table with other diners. It was strange how the people sitting next to my group arrived after us, yet their orders were taken first. Anyway, I got the attention of
Their menu is extensive and packed full of delicious dishes. The dumplings we ordered were by far the best dumplings I have ever eaten, and the rainbow beef stood out as my favourite main dish. Be sur
I was ready to start devouring dumplings. First up on my list was Xiao Long Bao [#201] - a steamed mini pork soup dumpling. I had tasted my first one of these at a dumpling bar in Sydney, and longed for another since. Simply amazing! So, so impressed. Definately one to add to my favourites list But be very careful – the hot soup does burn, so try not to be too eager !
xiao long bao new shanghai
The decor immediately places you in another world, old school pictures of Chinese ladies with umbrellas, red bunting, stone path flooring and even an old bicycle outside the restaurant, its as if you are actually eating in an alleyway in Shanghai. There is a large open window at the front of the restaurant where you can witness dumplings being freshly prepared.
I have mixed feelings about New Shanghai. On the whole, the food was fairly good and the menu contains quite a few authentic dishes. I like the decor and the concept of the restaurant but its popularity is a bit of a turn off. I get a Melbourne/Sydney vibe from it because of how busy it was the whole time we were there. The service was sketchy at best but at least our waiters weren't rude to us (which I had read online). They were disorganized but apologetic. I would recommend sticking to their signature dishes.
I love Shanghainese food! Tonight we went to New Shanghai and it’s really really good! We recently came back from Sydney and tried their chained restaurant at Chatswood Chase, we were so excited to hear they now set foot at Queens Plaza! Brisbane finally has some authentic Shanghainese cuisine! We arrived tonight at 7pm and there was already a very long queue! They don’t take bookings on Friday nights so we took a number and then wandered around DJ, after 45 minutes we finally got a table! New Shanghai’s menu is printed on a sheet of paper, the typical Asian style, like Fat Noodle’s . We quickly picked our favourite Shanghainese dishes - Xiao Long Bao (steamed mini pork buns) and Pan Fried Pork Dumplings. Surprisingly they were even better than the Sydney’s Chatswood Chase shop! Both are very juicy with lots of soup inside! But if you compare the quality to the famous Din Tai Fung there’s still a long way to go, with every Din Tai Fung’s Xiao Long Bao it has
My first time here. I ordered the pork dumplings and pork belly bao. They both tasted so good. 😊
You have to try the pot stickers and the Xio longbao (soupy dim sum), best dumplings in town!! The decor is super nice and the staff is friendly despite how busy they are! I don’t understand other reviews complaining about using QR code or the staff ….there is a line to go there every day and there is a reason for that, it’s amazing!
Whenever we are in the city, we visit New Shanghai to snack on dumplings. Despite all the visits over the years, we have hardly ventured away from dumplings as they have always been exceptional. The decor here is beautiful and the service is efficient. I would recommend trying the Xioalongbao, the pan-fried pork buns and any of the dumplings. I particularly like the shepherd's purse dumplings served with the peanut and chilli sauce. The dessert section has some interesting dishes that are definitely worth exploring as well.
Had all our usual favourites: Xiao Long Bao, Guo Tie, Seng Jian Bao, Wonton and some noodles. Very satisfied with meal.
We always enjoy the food when we come here. Staples we always order are the soup dumplings (#201) & the new shanghai signature pork & veg noodles (#407) - they are SO good. We always like to try other small dishes too but definitely always coming back for these 2 in particular. Lines can be long to get in but service is pretty quick so you are eating pretty soon after being seated.
I had several dishes.
xiolongbao dumplings, drunken chicken, seaweed salad, beef nooudle soup, calamari rings, and prawn dumplings with sesame paste sauce.
They were very nice. I recommend their dumplings the most.
I visit there whenever I think of xiolongbao.
