Matthew Thomas is a lovely little art cafe on the coast road overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Sandgate. We arrived for brunch on a Sunday and it was fairly busy. The menu was full of nice choices and it was difficult to decide, but I opted for a mt classic which is eggs, bacon, tomato and sourdough while my companion chose the grande breakfast. Other options on the menu included pancakes, waffles, muesli, salmon, and eggs benedict. I had an almond and nutella shake which was delicious, and the coffee was also very good.
Unique as an old brick building at Sandgate in a sea of timber great Coffee and 10 for ambience. Georgian structure by the sea.
With many delicious options and a stunning view, you can't go wrong here! The latte I had was one of the bests ones I've had. Helped there was a really handsome bloke running the coffee station too but honestly, this is one of Brisbane's hidden gems.
I enjoy a brunch at Matthew Thomas on occasion. I would go more regularly but it really is quite pricey. The views are lovely and it is located in a unique old building that has a lot of history in the area. If you are lucky enough to be in town on a Sunday in winter, they light a fire in the fireplace around which are placed some lovely wingback chairs and tables.
Most recently, I treated myself to the vegetarian breakfast, my partner to the eggs Benedict and my daughter to waffles. The servings were generous and the service was ok just a little slow. My vegetarian breakfast was certainly tasty, although to be honest, I found the sourdough toast really dry and hard. The Eggs Benedict was served with a large serving of bacon and the waffles were served with quite the handful of fresh berries.
Sometimes I go to have just a pot of tea while taking in the views and writing or drawing. I have treated friends to lunch here as well and do recommend their tasty (if quite overpriced) fish and chips. I have also taken both my daughters her for a treat of dessert with milkshakes. They enjoy the brownies very much.
It is a lovely local place that has some serious ambience and history. The food is good, just be wary of the high prices and keep it as a treat destination and you won’t be disappointed.
Outstanding food and service. Compliments to the chef on making everything from scratch! It certainly shows in the flavours. Your salted caramel and lemon curd is gobsmackingly delicious. The venue, waterfront and nostalgia is lovely to be amongst.
If your in the area and you appreciate good food look no further, the views and breeze is lovely, the staff are friendly the place has a great ambience, but the best thing is the food, the chef/cook is skilled and I enjoyed every bite, I’ll be back next week for lunch.
Awesome place on a lazy afternoon. We had great coffee and hot chocolate. The view is fantastic...over Moreton Bay. The service was very friendly and attentive.
Great place for the morning coffee or breakfast. Fantastic Egg Benedict with delicious hollandaise sauce served on sourdough. Combine the great food with views of the bay makes this little place is one of the best spots to eat in the area.
Canadian Waffles and Eagle 50 are amazing and filling meal! Always consistent and service is good. Great location and also dog friendly place.
Seemed a little pricey for the food although the banoffee shake was awesome. great view aswell, its a very quaint cafe alongside the shorncliff waterfront.
Very nice location overlooking the sea. a family friendly place for brunch. I enjoyed every aspect of this quaint cafe. The coffees were great. The service was fast and friendly. The interior was lovely. The food waiting times were great. The food -- I ordered the Breakfast bode which was great- both dishes beautifully presented, looking fresh and was delicious. They accommodated my partner who wanted no eggs and extra bacon. The only thing I would love to see improved is the "crispy" bacon - tasted a bit dry and cardboard-y with both dishes (Canadian waffles- unfortunately my partner was not too crazy about this dish). Other than that, I would recommend it, as I enjoyed the dish I ordered, it is overall a nice cafe with a friendly atmosphere.
First time at Matthew Thomas and the decor and atmosphere was lovely. Even on a rainy day the view was lovely. The service was very prompt and the staff were friendly. We were given table service even though it is meant to be counter order. The coffee was impeccable; flavorsome and hot long black.
The main issue at this venue is the food price to quality ratio. I order the Canadian waffles (waffles with bacon and eggs on top). My dining partner ordered the onsie. The food was pleasant enough but nothing special. It was essentially a twist on bacon and eggs on toast but with two waffles. It was fair but not worth the $20.40 price. A lot of places in Brisbane are now doing very exciting things with their menu at a better price. The same applied for the onsie, two very small fritters, a poached egg and some avo on toast at $20.40.
A nice local cafe but they need to offer more in regards to the food quality for the price they are charging.

Great view of Bramble Bay matched by delicious lunchtime meals.
The pulled pork brioche and Noosa whiting although simple were both extremely tasty.
A nice, relaxed place to have a leisurely lunch served by friendly staff.
Went here for family brunch. Was greeted as soon as we got there and were tended to promptly.
We found the service outstanding. All staff were very polite and professional.
The food & drinks all came out at the appropriate time and were to a very high standard.
Our experience here could not be faulted.
Add in the great view and location, we will continue to come back often with experiences like this.
Excellent service. We were greeted by a professional and friendly young waiter. Not long after, the owner came and had a chat with us. The food was fresh, healthy and delicious and we were given a generous portion. Price was also absolutely reasonable for the high level of service that we received. After lunch the owner came over and gave my baby son a free ice-cream dessert and later we were presented with a freshly made chocolate brownie dessert on the house. The owner even came over to offer to take photos for us. I can't recommend this business enough. Thank you Mathew Thomas.
Quite special with beautiful views. This Restaurant has a lovely feel about it, the decor is charming. It's comfortable with plenty of tables. The waitresses are friendly and very attentive, maybe a little over attentive. Interrupting our conversation to get our order. People will usually alert the waitress when they are ready. It's a bit annoying. Coffee was okay but nothing to rave about. We only had coffee and cake, the desserts are a bit over priced, $12 a dessert. They were really nice though. The menu for breakfast and lunch looks good, it's not huge which can be good and easy to choose. Meals we saw came out looked delicious. Overall it's worth s visit. I would recommend it and will be back to try breakfast or lunch sometime.
Great location, food was awesome, coffee was good, service was a bit slow and slightly disorganized, but overall the quality made up for it. Well done
The service at this cafe is unmatched... combine that with great coffee, food and affordability.. easy 5/5. Been here 3 times now... always consistently great.
Had a birthday breakfast with the wife here today was extremely good. Breakfast was out fast coffee was good and the service was great and with a smile. Had heard good things about this place and was not disappointed. Will definitely be back.
This is a favourite! Excellent service. Great food. Great atmosphere. Lovely staff and amazing fudge hiding behind the counter. Could come here every weekend. Wife loves the view of the water And nick knacks for sale
Friendly staff, great views, lovely atmosphere and superb food.. Our family enjoyed a great lunch at Matthew Thomas. The staff were extremely friendly and made our time there a very special occasion. The corn cakes were superb. We'll be visiting again in the near future.
Food is good, maybe a touch on the dearer side for a sandwich, but still enjoyable and satisfying. The Italian hot chocolate is interesting; very thick and rich (like Fabio) and deffinately needed the long-necked spoon That came with it. Staff all very attentive and friendly, waiter was maybe a newbie as he was keen as to clear our plates away, but that's ok, it's the service industry after all! We had lunch on a Friday and they were fairly steady, but service was fast. Would go again to have a coffee and fudge and a look at the shop inside. Try it out for yourself, it's a beatiful spot.
Piia the manager and her team made the celebration lunch for my fathers 90 birthday a great success. Nothing was too much trouble for the restaurant. Good friendly service with a smile and the food was good. Lovely ambience. Highly recommend the restaurant.
Coffee passes my test of hot and strong. Stunning view with lovely atmosphere. Excellent and friendly customer service from Pia and Marcus. Will return.
Great service. Best waffles ever, lovely Italian hot chocolate. Five star all round.
Gorgeous beach front location, excellent wait staff and absolutely delicious food. A must visit!! Coffee also gives some Melbourne cafes a run for their money!
Afternoon Hi Tea Aug 2013. Thank you all at MT Sandgate. We (20+ guests) were very happy with your attention to detail, particularly as some guests had particular food allergies. We enjoyed a variety of tasty finger sandwiches, yummy little tarts, scones, all made on site and a selection of your yummy fudge. Teas, coffees, water all served with beautiful china. I duly noted the new timber flooring and handrail for easier access for us not so young folk. Once again, thank you. Some of us have been back already :)
Well worth a visit. We had a most enjoyable experience for lunch. The range of menu items was very enticing, and settling on a single dish was a difficult choice (not a problem I often have as a vegetarian, as at most places the options are limited). The food that we each chose was well presented and delicious! The coffee was excellent too (and I have high expectations when it comes to coffee!) The service was very attentive and friendly, and the setting and scenery are stunning. My parents and I all commented on what a lovely relaxed meal we had and vowed to do it again - soon!!
Yeah!. Matthew Thomas - my place of choice for breakfast, lunch or just coffee and catch up with friends. So nice to have somewhere to eat viewing the bay that is not an overpriced pub or cafe on the beachfront. Love that I can enjoy the food, look at the ocean or art on the walls, browse the lovely gifts (also nice change from seagulls, poker machines) and I have never been disappointed with what I have ordered! Thank you M.T. Be there again soon.
Not only do my wife and i enjoy the experience, atmosphere , great coffee and value for money of both matthew thomas stores, we travel 150 klm from the country to do so .
I find it interesting , the gentleman in the earlier review, stated that he would never return because of how thick or not , his bread was ...
While not everything about every visit is perfect , i believe it is done to a very high standard and in my experience it can be some of these variances ,that set these independent small businesses apart from your run of the mill , sterile national/multi national chains .
Having been introduced to the owner, matthew, in the past , i find it interesting he is often the fellow clearing the tables, cleaning or taking the orders .
Always the gentleman, it upsets me that he ( and others in small business) can be bashed on these sites , with out any real right- of reply, over utterly trivial matters , by people who's only experience at being a "food critic " is watching master chief ..
Do yourself a favour people, get yourself an open grill ( flavour of your choice , as they are all good ) and a greek salad on the side . Coffee and orange juice and if your still in the mood , my wife raves about the mud cake ...
Oh and try saying thank you before you leave ..
Have a great day all ...
Loved it. Had a lovely breakfast here this morning. Fantastic scrambled eggs and bacon on turkish toast. The food was perfectly cooked and plenty of it for the price. The coffee was also excellent. Loved the fast service and no-fuss attitude. 5 stars
A welcome addition to Sandgate. My partner and I had breakfast here recently. We showed up without a booking not realising how popular the place was, but they managed to seat us at a small coffee style table with arm chairs. Was happy to compromise to get a seat.
We both ordered omelettes, and there was a slight hiccup with mine missing its mushroom however they were very apologetic and rushed to get some done to have on the side. Food was tasty and portion sizes good. Prices are very reasonable.
I can see this would be a great place to drop in for coffee, cake, and a chat with friends. It's a beautiful building.
Coffee this afternoon. Had coffee at Matthew Thomas for the first time this afternoon. A great spot, cool on a hot day, good iced coffee, just the way I reqested and some nice little gifts there to browse and buy - service good too.
Very pleasant spot, service good, not rowdy, and I'll certainly go back: will become a regular stop off for me.
As a resident of the 4017 postcode, I am delighted that someone has finally opened up a decent cafe that serves breakfast overlooking the bay. The menu is fairly simple - no fancy inner-city morsels - but good and well-priced food nonetheless. The wait-staff are friendly (albeit a little nervous) and the view of our humble Bramble Bay is the highlight (providing patrons don't park their cars out the front!). When eating there, I heard several people ask if it was open for dinner; it is not. I assume it's not licenced. The owners are definitely taking a step in the right direction to serve food to a community who don't just want to walk by the bay but eat in a classy establishment by the bay as well.
Went for a Saturday morning walk along Lover's Walk and ended up at Matthew Thomas cafe'. A welcoming and warm feel to the place. I loved the decor, high ceilings and position with a view through the trees of the sea. The service was quick and personable. The menu is fairly extensive and reasonably priced (maybe a bit on the high side). Having said that, the portions were generous and well prepared. We loved our meal and the coffee was great.
What a little gem this cafe is!
We were having a lazy Sunday so decided to go out for lunch something we don’t do locally very often as expectations are seldom met.
This is our second visit here in as many weeks and I am so pleasantly surprised. Location, ambience and staff all wonderful and the food did not disappoint.
Oh great coffee too.
I was here for breakfast with a group of friends. The service was very quick and extremely professional. The staff were very knowledgeable and welcoming about their diverse menu and possible changes. Overall a great experience and I would definitely recommend a visit.
Housed in a quirky vintage building that says Masonic Hall on the original signage.
The hall has been converted into a cafe and residencies on top.
Nicely fitted out with cottage Hamptons decor to suit the old style with a modern twist.
It is extreemly dog friendly and I got to pat 3 dogs all seated at different tables out the front.
It's wonderful that there are more places we can head out to with our hairy four legged family members.
Stopped here to get a coffee while in Sandgate.
Courteous immediate friendly service.
They do Toby's Estate coffee, it was perfectly made and super fast. The food looked fantastic and menu reasonably priced.
Eggs Benny is my go to breakfast order whenever I try somewhere new. It was expertly prepared and beautifully balanced, not a piece out of order. Add in charming decor and views out over the water for a superb breakfast experience.
Beautiful venue.
Chicken Moroccan salad was amazing. So much flavour, it was so delicious. One of the best things I've eaten and I could eat this every day! However by the end it was extremely oily, and we had a huge puddle at the bottom of the bowl and the remaining salad was dripping. Perhaps consider a bit less salad dressing. Amazing flavours though!
We also had the calamari dish. The chips were incredible and I've never had that smooth texture of potato before, yet so crispy on the outside!?! The calamari was beautiful and melting in the mouth, we just weren't a fan of the herbs on the outside. It would have been infinitely better with just lemon pepper and salt, rather than the ?italian herb mix. It didn't work at all.
The waffle was nice, but nothing mind blowing. Would be better with a thicker (and more flavoursome) fudge style sauce.
Overall a lovely meal, however we did think the price was a little excessive.
Another beautiful meal ,great service ,attenion to detail ,and the overall apreance of venue make for a great outing
Had a terrific breakfast, nice old renovated meeting hall, nice decor, pleasant view out to Morton bay, Sandgate
