Delicious Philly cheesesteaks. I love the provolone cheese in the three cheese, cheesesteak. I wish there was more cheese and beef so the sandwiches were bigger and thicker with more filling.
Favourite spot in brisbane for a delicious easy feed. We go there way too often but it's worth it every time. Triple cheese steaks and cheesy fries all the way.
eaten here a bunch of times with my wife, always get a cheesesteak with mushrooms, and some sweet potato fries, the meat's always tender and delicious, and you can see them cooking it right in front of you. it's always been good as far as food's concerned, in terms of a place to eat, it's essentially just a hole in the wall, not somewhere you'd go for atmosphere or a romantic night out etc, just a great place to go and get a good cheesesteak. if you haven't tried it, you should ;)
Went in on a Thursday evening with my wife. Just had a meal myself so we decided to split a cheesesteak and a side of sweet potato fries.
For $10.50 the original cheesesteak was a decent portion, and it was served to us cut in half without us having to ask for it. The sweet potato fries were a generous serve and crisp to perfection! We will definitely be back!
Best Philly cheesesteaks in town! Always quick and friendly service and has a great American atmosphere. Never disappointed with the quality of the food and very good portions

Another Friday night Uber Eats session brought to you this time by PJ’s Steaks! Perfect serving for one. Anyway, so excited to to try this place out and I wasn’t disappointed. Delicious wings and amazing loaded fries! Trust me, just order the fries and you’ll be hooked!
Great, solid heart warming food. Depending who's on can change the quality slight, as sometimes it's not toasted and a bit soggy, but the flavour is their and it's great. Pretty to close to American as well. Especially the chili cheese fries.
The best cheesesteak in Brisbane. That's not to say it is the real deal but it comes as close as it can given that this is Brissy and not Philly!
The steaks are tasty. PJs have done well with all of the flavour combinations and present well constructed steaks that you can enjoy in the cool setting in-store along with crunchy fries and soda!
Why PJs doesn't rate higher:
❌ no whiz
❌ meat cooked well but just missing something...
❌ bread soft inside and outside. Personally, I would prefer it firm outside and soft inside
❌ on the pricier side (unsurprising when little (if any) competition and (I assume) cost of ingredients in Australia)
That said... these steaks offered at PJs should be a reason that inspires you to want to visit the States to try cheesetseak and for that, I cannot go below a 4 for PJs! They do a good job.
*****
Take note that this is of course all based on my unqualified opinion!
My considerations: 1. Food 2. Value 3. Service 4. Atmosphere
Best chilli fries I've found in Brisbane - not just plain hot mince/chilli con carne like a lot of other places, however it's quite overpriced for the portions you get.
Have been visiting this place since it opened and it has never disappointed a craving. The subs are a guilty please, I personally prefer them with plenty of all 3 sauces. Fries and sweet potato fries are great too! Probably recommend sharing one between two unless you really love fries.
One of the few places in West End that we always consider as a good option.
One of it's main catches is that it focuses on a dish that's not very common in Brisbane so it'll give you some good variety if you're tired of the usual lunch or dinner; the Cheesesteaks themselves don't look too large when you first get them but the mix of pure beef and a good serving of cheese makes it quite a hefty meal.
We've tried quite a few, and personally find most of them to be quite good depending on what you're after, for the cheese we certainly favour Provolone as it's one of the most traditional and the flavour does not overwhelm the rest of the meal.
One of the things you absolutely MUST have when you go there are their Onion rings, fantastic size and seasoning and perfectly cooked, definitely worth the price if you're a fan of them. Their chips are so-so but other thing we really enjoy (and sometimes crave more than the cheesesteak themselves) is their chilli fries as it's simply a great treat.
In regards to their Hot Dogs, sadly that's the only thing we can't get behind unless they bring back the lunch/Tuesday specials, they are basically the same as if you made them at home but with a large price tag, I'd generally say don't bother, it's their small 'trap' menu I'd say.
The last thing I can comment on food-wise is that they have an interesting mix of American drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, so if you're there why not have some Dr. Pepper?
The locale itself is pretty nice, although a bit tight it's still got a good layout for you to have your meal, I wouldn't say it's the best place to eat for a long time as there's only a couple tables inside and a couple out, but it's definitely good enough for lunch or a quick dinner before/after drinks and they certainly try to appeal with their American-style decor (and usually always have some US-inclined sport on their TV)
Best Philly cheesesteaks I've had outside of America. Super cheesy and delicious. The onion rings were crisp on the outside and sweet inside. Decent range of sauces to add to your meal! I'm really glad I checked them out.
Well to say this is true American food would be definitely no lie, the chilli cheesesteak is my personal favorite. Dessert options would be nice as well as a more authentic chilli cheese fries, but I can't complain as their onion rings and sweet potato fries are super delicious and one of the best I have ever had.
Staff are really friendly and quick cooks, as for variety of cheesesteaks there is a solid amount to choose from. As well as this they have hotdogs and American softdrinks which have a good selection. I personally always get a Hanks Creme soda and it is superb. So to end my review if you at least like cheesesteaks or have never had one then you are missing out Big Time so you must go get one and yes the store looks awesome.
Omg this place is so amazing. Seriously if you're around the area, you need to visit this place at least once. I live like a 5 minute walk away, perfect for those late night cravings.
Went in on a Sunday for lunch and ordered the chilli cheese fries, normal fries and a cheesesteak with American cheese as the option (you can pick provolone, cheddar or stinky too). I hadn't had a cheese steak before and it was nice, but I did squish a little bit of mustard/bbq on it (which were tasty), I think I was expecting it to be a little more spicy/garlicky - but I don't claim to know what a classic cheesesteak should taste like. The cheese fries were really good as were the chips and the bun was nice and soft; I'd go there again as our meal was less than $30 (no drinks).
Definitely go for the Cheese Steaks and the onion rings! A very nice spot for lunch with friends! Very nice spot with great food, however the restaurant is a bit small.
A brilliant spot for lunch, with a great lunch special and some of the best cheese steaks in Brisbane as well as a solid variety of toppings, really quality fries and onion rings.
Beautiful, soft bread roll with thinly sliced wagyu beef and topped with melted cheese, there is a big range to choose from, so you can have mushrooms or onions with it too ect, wings and sauce were 10/10 , really good place
One of my favorite joints. The owner is super friendly. Service is prompt and you always see them making your order as fast as possible. Never have had an issue in the numerous times I've come (no matter what time of the day). I've even called super late (right before they closed) and they were still happy to make my meal and wait for me to come before closing up. Highly recommend!
Best place to get a Philly Cheesesteak. Great location. And the subs are very flavoursome. Would recommend to any American food lover... Or for that matter anyone would love it!
A quick peruse of Zomato late this afternoon threw up PJ's Steaks as a dining option for the evening. Now I haven't had a philly cheesesteak since I was in Vegas 18 months ago, so it tickled my tastebuds to have something a little different from our usual indian/viet Saturday night standard. A quick call and a table booked (not that we needed to book we realised when we arrived) and we were on our way.
Right in the middle of Boundary Street, just down from Tukka and across the road from Ouzeri and we had a table out on the footpath ... always good for a bit of people-watching in West End. Menus were on the table and the pleasant waitress said once we had decided on our meals, just to order inside - easy as.
There were about 10 rolls to choose from with a few sides. I went with the triple cheesesteak - the warning was that it was cheesy - but is there ever anything such as too cheesy??? Not in my books. Hubby went with the chilli cheesesteak as he likes things spicy. With sides of sweet potato fries and the onion ring tower and a beer (for him) and a cider for me, we were on our way.
Drinks were out quick smart and meals were on the table not too far after that. And I have to say - delicious - as good as what we had in the USA. For those not up on what a philly cheesesteak is - it's thinly sliced steak (waygu in this instance) in a soft long roll with onions and melted cheese on top. The traditional one's in the US have provolone cheese ... you can also add other stuff like mushrooms, chilli, capisum (peppers) etc. My triple cheesesteak had all three cheeses on offer on it (cheddar, provolone and stinky) and with a squeeze of mustard on top, was fabulous. Hubby also enjoyed his chilli - said it was hot but not ridiculously so. As for the fries and onion rings - up there with the best I've ever had ... especially the sweet potato fries, which can sometimes be a little undercooked ... these were crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle with plenty of seasoning.
Look this isn't fine dining - and sorry, but I don't understand the negative reviews here that think it's not value for money. At $50 for the two of us we felt there was more than enough food and it was all good quality. Yes it's served up in plastic baskets on paper, but hey, thats how you get em in the States as well - they aren't served on a plate with a knife and fork. To me it was a really authentic meal in every way. If you want cheap - head to maccas - but it won't be as yummy I can assure you.
Definately a place I will return to - note they now have one in the Valley too - if you haven't tried a cheesesteak, give one a go - you may be pleasantly surprised.
PJs is a great place for mates to eat and catch up at. My friends and I always come here when we want to have a yarn, a couple bevvies and a good feed. PJs does well to recreate the famous Philly cheesesteak, offering a favourite of menu items. We ordered tatertots, onion rings and a cheesesteak each. I had the chilli cheese steak, my favourite, served with jalapeños, beans, fried onions on a fresh roll with wagyu meat. The cheesesteaks are best eaten with the specialty American beers they offer.
YUM YUM YUM. We went Chilli all round. Chilli Dog, Chilli Fries and Chilli Cheese Steak. Hubby had the cheese steak and I had the hot dog. I had one bite of his , ok I stole 2 bites, was so delicious I wish I ordered the steak! Hot Dog was good too but the cheese steak OMG, so tender. will be back for more.
Casual and Fun Food with a few good beers too!!. Not quite what we we expected going by the name. The place is very casual with very limited seating. Meals are essentially "subs" stuffed with various meats and cheeses, generally eaten (somewhat messily) with hands. Meals were tasty and some of the beers are good.
We thought it more of a lunchtime place - not really a sit down dinner place (especially if you don't phone ahead).
Very popular with the younger crowd.
This place is awesome!! Hands down best cheesesteaks in the Southern Hemisphere. Being an east coast guy born and raised I know what a Philly Cheesteak is supposed to taste like. And this place is amazing
Can't get enough of the Chilli Cheese steak with American cheese! Travel all the way from Calamvale for it. The best.
Awesome place, I go here for my "Chicken Cheese Steak with Stinky Cheese" and "Sweet Potato Chili Fries" every chance I get... Cruise in, park the bike across the road in the motor bike parking and have a cheese steak watching people walk by.... You will want to make sure someone at your table gets onion rings..... You need to try them while your there too :-)
Top Place. The cheesesteaks are great here! Great place to watch NBA or college basketball too. People complaining about the portion size are nitpicking. Go to Subway if you want size, come to PJ's for flavour!
Love it love it love - did a Friday lunch and was so impressed with the food and the speed of food to table. My new favourite
Was a great feed will definitely go back
Seriously yum! Went at 10.30 on a Friday night - so quick and fresh. Strongly recommend the mushroom wagyu roll
Ummmm yum!. Love PJ's - the tasty meat, the onion rings, the buffalo wings .... I couldn't find anything to whinge about. If you don't get the gist from looking at other users pics of what you are in for, maybe don't go. Its a greasy, meat fest - with or without an awesome chilli kick!
PJ's Steaks - West End, Brisbane. This is a unique place in Brisbane that could have a fighting chance in any suburb; well here it is in the place that seems to collect unique eateries. It is very small, and is much longer than it is wide. I had been wanting to go here for quite some time and finally had the opportunity; I took some time off work to meet a friend for lunch and the two of us went here. Suffice to say, it's a bit different to what I was expecting. Nevertheless it was worth it.
Inside is decked out a bit like an American diner. There is a wall of celebrity photographs and movie stills which are fun to see which ones you recognise. The seating is decidedly tacky; you are not eating at a Michelin-star restaurant afterall and it is close to as casual of a food you can get. The main kitchen is right in the window, the hot plate where the steak and onion are cooked fresh to order. You have all the promise there that the food is well and freshly prepared.
It is basically fast food, you order and the service is what it needs to be. They are really quick thus this this place is ideal for the lunchtime rush.
Being at best vaguely familar with the cheesesteak - and looking up the ettiquette online for ordering it properly - I thought to get the original cheeseteak with Provelone cheese. The waitress asked me if I wanted hot sauce and I said yes. For a side order, I requested onion rings and had a Hank's Root Beer (a Philadelphia brand, and the drink originates commercially from there as well - interesting factoid).
My friend ordered a chili dog and some sweet potato fries to go with it.
The cheesesteak was pretty good, with the ingredients all reasonable in quality. It was a bit blander than I thought it would be - but then this is from north of the Mason-Dixon line. I thought the cheese was pretty good and added a little bite to the sandwich, and trying the hot sauce it was not overwhelmingly spicy so I could have easily put a lot more on. Maybe I should have utilised the condiments, but I was not so sure how they worked on cheeseteaks.
As for the onion rings and sweet potato fries, they were both very good. A couple of onion rings came with my cheesesteak by default. I will give props to the presentation of the onion rings, they came piled high using a stand to stack them. This allowed various sizes of rings to be served - something that I had not seen before, bravo! The onion was starting to become sweet and there was a crispy coating surrounding them. They were really good. As for the fries, they were also very good and pretty different. These did not need any conidments to go with them.
I am a fan of root beer when and where I can get it in Australia, and Hank's was not an excpetion. It stil had that slightly sweet root beer taste that is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of dynamic. If only it were possible to have a root beer float there.
The size may not have been really big, but it was robust. At the end I was satiated but could fit a bit more in; the cheesecake interested me so I got a slice before leaving to get back to work.
This cheesecake was really good, served chilled it was everything you would want a cheesecake to be with a crumbly cookie base.
This place is pretty good, the food is well-prepared and good quality. Walking back to the office I had what I refer to as a "Joker smile" from all the food that I had. I can recommend this place to a lot of people and I think I will be back again.
The missus and I both agree it's the best steak sandwich and onion rings we've ever had, a must
A great bite to eat if your looking for something fast and filling for a regular size human. be warned these cheese steaks are in no way comparable in size to what they do in america.
PJ = Probably Jesus. It is what it is, and for what it is it's excellent.
The bread is always so fresh just like the staff, warm and inviting it's a great place to grab a quick feed before continuing on one's pub migration. If you are a first timer, go for the Mushroom steak with sharp provolone as it won't disappoint, I love stinky cheese :). Give a shout out to Baju (I think that's how you spell it) if you go because she was a cool chick.
This place is brilliant! Chilli cheesesteak is now a staple of my weekend diet!!. Goes down beautifully with samuel adams beer and some fries with their spicy sauce!! Staff are fantastic as well. So happy I found this place
You don't have to travel to the USA. You would normally have to travel to Philadelphia to get one of these. Consistently good. How do they get those buns just right?
Authentic - pips New York's best. My first encounter with a Philly Cheesesteak was at this place. It was tasty, but I wasn't sure how authentic it was. When I was in NY recently I sampled Carl's Steaks - apparently NY's most authentic Cheesesteak. PJ's was definitely better tasting than Carl's, so hats off to the little hole in wall shop in Brisbane for dishing out a world-class cheesesteak. Expensive, but you get get a world-class cheesesteak in return.
Mmmmm. Only found out about this place last weekend, very tasty sub and fries. I had the pepper steak sub, will be going back this week to try the other items. Highly recommended!
That American Korean guy is hot.
American food at its best. My partner and I had lunch at PJ's on Saturday. This was our first encounter with cheese steaks so we didn't know what to expect. We ordered the original cheese steak and the chili cheese steak - both we're very tasty and came out quite quickly. The chips were a generous size. I liked the selection of American drinks like Mellow Yellow and Dr Pepper. They were out of american cheese, which was unfortunate, but we will definitely be going back!
Simple Authenticity. We were so glad to see this place pop-up in our neighborhood...it's one of the great American sandwiches Brisbane has been missing out on. PJ's doesn't disappoint with good variations to choose from and yummy side dishes (sweet potato fries, onion rings--nuff said.) It's definitely no-fuss, good Philly cheese steaks and the staff has always been friendly too.
I spent three weeks in Philly eating cheesesteaks with the best of them and I can without a doubt say that PJs is up there with the big guns. Absolutely delicious, I only wish they would bring back that tuna melt.
Awesome. We decided to try and find another American style food place in Brisbane (we really loved the food in America while there on honeymoon in October), and we were not disappointed. I had the "street" hotdog and tater tots as a side, and hubby had a steak & cheese hogie with devil wings as a side.
We left very satisfied and full and will definitely return.
Fresh and tasty!!. My partner and I thought we travel to pjs to try this place out and we weren't disappointed greeted with a happy friendly hospitality you don't get anymore then james was happy to explain what they were about and what ingredients and how they make the cheesy steaks and hoggies. So we ordered and tried the most freshest and tastiest amerIcan style sandwich/sub! All the flavours you can taste are great! We will be back. My advice to anyone wanting to try pjs go and be open minded to new things
Awesome. We saw this place from across the road and I said to the wife "we should go checkout if that place dose cheese steaks" (as they are a favourite home made of ours) .... Well turns out that is what these guys do best !! I had the pepper cheese steak with American and the wife had the street dog .... Both where awesome .... This place is now on our top 5 favourite places to get a great lunch in Brisbane ..... Guys behind the counter were cool to chat to as well
Simple food done very well. Will be back. Easy to order too much. The Hank's Vanilla Cream Soda was like nothing I've ever had. Highly recommended.
Great cheesesteak nearly as good as the one I had in the US. The devil wings were nice however they were slightly gamey and not the buffalo style which is superior. The price for the cheesesteak was triple what I paid in the states however it is plentiful over there so the price hike is to be expected.
Awesome...... I love this place, the chilli steak with chips and extra chilli bean sauce and a nice cold beer to wash it all down. Only dislike is that I can't get the chilli steak to takeaway.
OMG sooooo Good!!! (American Review). I am American and these are great!!!! If you are American, read this review and not the other reviews.
This place is super yummy and good balance. Definitely much smaller than what you would expect in the US, but hey, we are in Aus. They definitely know what they are doing and their dill pickles are super good too.
They are also fixed the way you want (e.g. no onions, no mushrooms, no whatever, or add this or that). Great to go to a place and get what you want and not have people stare at you like you are a whinger or something.
Sincerely,
Nuts
AAA+++ would buy from again. I ate here on the weekend, had the original cheesesteak & a Sam Adams - both were delicious.
Damn it, now I'm hungry again.
One word: wonderful. Some people may complain about the price, but $13 for a Chili Cheesesteak with exceptional ribeye steak that melts in your mouth, it's worth every penny. PJ's Steaks gives an experience you can't get anywhere else. I strongly suggest you try out one of the Cheesesteaks for yourself!
This place is fantastic, truly tasty food and good quality ingrediants, its clean affordable and friendly service.
I recomend this place to all who enjoy hearty food
So so. I would also have to fully agree with Craig's review. Yes this place is the only philly cheese steak joint in Brisbane, but by no means it is spectacular. When you eat a philly cheese steak in the states its all about abundance and gluttony and you just don't get that feeling here.
The rib fillet they use does tastes great and is very tender, the choices of cheeses are a great idea but everything simply feels held back and restrained. The bread roll seems like a woolies standard issue white roll that is about 7 inches in length. The quantity of ingredients within the roll are also lacking which simply does not make you feel like you are eating a genuine philly cheesesteak. Rather it feels like you are eating a steak sandwich at a school fete.
All in all the concept is absolutely fantastic. There are wide range of cheese steak options on the menu along side fries, corndogs and american beers and softdrinks but the minute you lay your eyes on the cheese steak you feel a bit disappointed. I am really rooting for these guys to succeed and hope this place gathers popularity in the area.
Great steaks. By virtue of serving the only philly cheesesteaks in brisbane (that i know of) these guys rank pretty highly in my books. had the hoagie cheesesteak; not only was it delicious, but they weren't afraid to make it messy either. they also have a range of american sodas. just as everyone has already written; staff are fantastic--great service and pride in their work!
Has to be Brisbane's finest! Amazing cheesesteaks! Worth the trip to West End, not just great food but awesome staff.
Really tasty. Recommend the chilli cheesesteak. People very friendly.
BEST AMERICAN FOOD IN BRISBANE! great service, friendly staff and delicious food make this a place I would definitely recommend to anyone!
This restaurant was awesome place... Good service, nice mood... Wonderful food... Have try! u will try again..
Yummy. These guys either have to;
a) Franchise a PJ's outlet in Ascot,
b) start a home delivery service or,
c) create an app that will tactically transplant a tasty sub straight into my stomach anytime anywhere.
If the above can't be achieved in the near future then I guess I will have to commute back to PJ's or move to West end.
Try it once and you will be back!. PJ’s Steaks specialise in freshly baked rolls that are packed with finely shaved prime rib beef cooked to perfection before your eyes on an open grill which is situated at the front of the restaurant. When the prime beef is combined with your choice of American cheese, mushroom, onions etc and grilled together, the results are outstanding. It’s a quick filling meal with no skimping on beef. I’ve returned three times since they opened in late June. The service is outstanding and the atmosphere is warm and quirky with a wall dedicated to a cool photo homage of mainly American pop icons. You rock PJ....James is also a cool dude.
This is the by far best sub I had so far. Can't have enough!!
Awesome Stuff.. Been waiting for this place to open as a mate of mine lived on these in the US.
Took him there in the opening week and he loved it! It's now his new favourite place in Brisbane.
Very tasty Cheesesteaks and PJ himself is a very nice fella.
Yeh ya. PJ rules....!!!!!!
Must try this. True one never ever had before!
True taste in town. Thank God! I
finaaly found a real American style food. real food, nice people
What an amazing sandwich. True American style. Great service and quality food. PJ's double steak sandwich+beer=heaven. Hidden jewel in the west end. Would definitely come back again.
This is great. Stoners beware this is a great place for the mad munches. Just had one 5 mins ago could go one again so good.
Thank god. You could have put a tyre burning factory here and It would be an improvement on the last place!
The ribeye fillet comes grilled with some chopped up onion and the obligatory melted cheddar. The bun was fresh and the cheese steak delicious. There is a lot to be said about the simplicity of the combo of steak and melted cheese, yum!...........It's not often you witness the beginning of an institution but with PJ's, I just get the feeling we are witnessing the beginning of something big. First there was Pizza, then Hamburgers and lately Hot Dogs, will Philly CheeseSteaks be the next best thing? I sure hope so!
PJ's Steaks is definitely on my list for a casual dinner when I am feeling particularly american!
A Philly cheesesteak consists of very thinly sliced steak, browned on a grill with onion or indeed other additions such as mushrooms or capsicum, and assembled into a long roll with melted cheese. PJ’s Steaks opened in West End recently, and owners PJ and James are responsible for introducing the Philly cheesesteak to Brisbane.
PJ Steaks offers delicious, filling cheese steak varieties. The venue is casual with a light American twang in its decor. I really like the idea of going here on a weeknight and sitting back with a cheese steak sub and beer (yes, they serve beer). It seems like a match made in heaven.
