Great coffee and excellent food. Service was a bit slow but very friendly. Nice and close to Novotel if you want an alternative to hotel breakfast.
Great coffee, laid back vibe, friendly staff once you is a regular bruv. They also give you a discount for BYO cup which is good for the environment and those caffeine receptors in your dome!
While the area has a few nice selections for dinner, Southbank is certainly not the place I would venture for brunch/lunch as it features a large number of commercialised restaurants and mediocre food. However, for close place near the cinemas, Merriweather cafe was our pick.
Food: Menu was simple and straightforward, with a main focus on eggs. We ordered 2 open omelettes - 1 mushroom and 1 ham and my other friend ordered poached eggs and sourdough + smoked salmon. Food was definitely satisfying for empty stomachs, with the eggs very well cooked - the omelettes light and fluffy, and the poached eggs cooked for the right amount of time as it had a good run. The toasts had a nice crisp and were not overly crunchy/hard. If anything, the food was good but perhaps a bit too ordinary. I also later ordered a green juice and it was exceptionally refreshing on a humid day (3.5/5)
Service: Good service, the food did not take long to arrive (10-15 mins) and a waiter who was on her break even went out of her way to hand us our menus before returning to her break. Environment was warm and welcoming, definitely kid friendly with many hip, old-school board games. (4/5)
For Southbank, Merriweather is not a bad option.
I had a pleasant but not spectacular breakfast here. The coffee was reasonably full flavoured which I like. The service was pleasant. The food. Fine. I had the open omelette . Which is what would put on a menu if I struggled to do a proper closed omelette. It was tasty enough but I’m sure I can find better in the area so will keep looking!
Brief menu but well chosen alternatives with a focus on eggs and breakfast/brunch and sustainable ingredients. The mushrooms on rye and avocado on sourdough were both very good with nice accompaniments (hummus and vegetable choices). Coffee also superior with rich flavour, citrus notes and very smooth finish. Range of cakes and sandwiches also available. Pleasant outlook over Musgrave Park. Attentive service.
Always pack!
Coffee and meals were good.
They shouldnt have table service with only 3 staff working. 1 cook, 1 barrista and 1 waitress cum cashier cum cleaner... notngona work!
Came here with work colleagues for some breakfast. Have been here before for coffee and it's always been good. Service was welcoming and accommodating as I did as for some adjustments to my meals. Food was also good as well.
I had breakfast here last Saturday and loved it. The staff were attentive and funny. The coffee was strong and full flavoured. I ordered one of the specials, a lovely shredded ham and fresh peas on sourdough toast. The baked treats on the counter looked delicious and is definitely another reason to return soon!
Great food and coffee but a warning to all - if you are ordering takeaway coffee, find something to do while you wait... Go for a run, maybe see a movie, or climb a mountain. I waited for 30 minutes for a takeaway PICCOLO, and watched multiple times as the barista kept making other takeaway coffees before my order. I had 2 orders before mine initially but ended up waiting for 6 coffees to be made before he even touched mine. Half an hour wait for a 100ml coffee. Not worth it.
In saying that, I will be back. I love this place. But not for my Saturday morning takeaway piccolo fix. I may have to go elsewhere for that.
Like a number of the new eating places popping up in SouthBank, the Merriweather Cafe is in the ground floor of a newish apartment block. There isn’t obvious signage out front, and I’d driven past it a few times and wondered what was under the awning. No obvious signage..but this is what it looks like.
Still one of the best breakfast options in West End. Amazing coffee from Supreme and they can serve a simple breakfast or something elaborate. Also great flowers and cakes (often being iced and decorated in front of you)
You can't go wrong at Merriweather, particularly with their delicious coffee. I must admit the chocolate shavings on their cappuccino are quite succulent and draw me back every time! With their ever changing and seasonal menu, I have always had a delicious breakfast and/or lunch at this cafe. Parking can be challenging but should not be a deterrent to this most excellent venue.
Awesome food and usually great coffee unfortunately the coffee isn't consistent one coffee will be blow your socks off awesome and the next watery and tasteless.
Coffee was very good (8/10). Sitting outside on a hot summer's day, the water glasses were delivered steaming hot and the water wasn't properly chilled. Not exactly refreshing, we had to ask for ice. After selecting a fancy marmalade spread, my brother was given vegemite and strawberry.
My final choice for a Brisbane breakfast was an important one – no second chances if I was disappointed on the last day. After careful consideration I decided on Merriweather in South Brisbane, which was a little further from my hotel than on previous days, but I went prepared with long sleeves this time as it was another crisp morning.
Delicious coffee, and love the produce used here. Looking forward to trying more on the menu. Also like the relaxed vibe on the weekend. The yummy desserts don't hurt either!

Beautiful food! I tried the vegan white beans with garlic, fennel and pesto while the rest of our table ordered the potato hash. I may have left with garlic breath, but we all left with full tummies and satisfied palates. The coffee is superb, the cakes are divine, the atmosphere is delightfully relaxed, and as long as you're happy to wait when it's busy, I can safely say you'll be back again for more!
Yum!! Love the fact they support local producers and the sustainable food movement! Great coffee and delicious breakfast - plus great seasonally changing menu.

This café is nice and petite, and looks quite contemporary, being part of a new-ish building. Bright, pleasant ambiance. When we went for breakfast here this week, there were quite a few customers, but we didn't have to wait for a table for 2, thankfully (this was a weekday though). Their coffee, supplied by Coffee Supreme, was quite nice, and the food came out in reasonable time. I ordered a potato and onion hash, which tasted alright, but reminded me a bit of those Chinese turnip cakes (comes in dense slabs, sometimes pan-fried on both sides). I had expected more of a fritter/hash-brown thickness and consistency. Nevertheless, it wasn't awful and I still ate it.
All the baked goods are made in-house, which is always a good sign. After eagerly eyeing the almond croissants for the whole time breakfast was consumed, my friend ordered one of these, and gladly, it did not disappoint. Flaky and tasty. I never usually buy almond croissants, because the ones I've tasted in the past had been overly sweet and/or spiked with heavy doses of almond essence, but this one was not like those at all.
I would probably return again to try out the other menu offerings and pastries.
**Edit 25/7/15: Went here again this arvo to grab an almond croissant, but found it to be quite flat this time and, rather disappointingly, the whole middle and bottom of the pastry were soggy :( . I don't know if this is because they make the filling more moist and the pastry therefore becomes soggy quickly (it had been sitting there at the counter for a few hours before I came along, I presume; I went earlier in the morning last time) - but this shouldn't happen if it's made properly anyway, right? - or if it just demonstrates inconsistency in batch quality… (photos attached)
Merriweather cafe is great both in concept and taste. It has a strong focus on locally sourced produce, which means ingredients are fresh and delicious. I found the food to be wholesome, healthy, tasty and filling on both occasions that I visited. The environment is light and casual and service was quite speedy too.
Very merry ;). This place has definitely improved with age and we loved our brekky there yesterday (was a bit un-memorable last time). You can tell the produce is fresh and top quality. The halloumi/zucchini hash cakes were fabulous and my fruit-filled Bircher was delicious. Supreme coffee was supreme indeed. Service slightly chaotic on a a busy day but very endearing. A sweet little spot.
Fantastic breakfast. What an unexpected find. We had a really great breakfast here this morning. The mushroom dish was amazing, a real stand out. The coffee was fabulous too.
Great coffee and staff very friendly. Ordered their breakfast special of avocado on toast with dukka and poached eggs. Very ordinary to he honest and not worth $16.50. Hardly an dukka on the bread and not much flavour to the dish. Just tasted like avo on toast that I make at home.
Yum!. Had their homemade baked beans with poached egg and couldn't stop raving about it for the next 2 hours. it was so good. go put it in your face.
Amazing!. Best breakfast in a long time. Homemade crumpets and the bean dish was great.
Great!. Been here a couple of times now and Merriweather has not disappointed! Good fresh breakfast menu with some sweet and savoury options, great coffee and good service. The sweets at the counter are all homemade I believe, and the one I tried (salted caramel brownie) was ridiculously good and very rich (glad I shared it!) Cold drip coffee is also great and a refreshing change to all the sweetened options around.
Fabulous breakfast this morning. Oatmeal flare cakes, fresh figs and amazing lime curd ... Wow
Love this place! Excellent coffee and food - trendy south brissi cafe chic
Cawffee. Ordered a coffee with a family memeber two weeks ago. I have drunk a lot of coffee in my time, have to say hands down best Long Macciato I have ever had.
It's a lovely looking spot. This is a sweet, pretty and clean Cafe set up. Quite simple but effective with the outlook across to the park. Service is okay, not overtly friendly though. There is a interesting and tasty menu. The little cake cabinet is filled with delicious looking baked goods. Which I tried and found divine. The only let down in a few visits is the inconsistancy in the espresso. What a shame, great one day, very average the next. Coming from the Cup pedigree, I would have hoped the espresso would be the 'one' rock solid element.
Diana. What a great new addition to the cafe scene bordering West End across the road from Musgrave Park. Friendly staff & a great barista serving up a perfect flat white, but I did order it hot luckily as I see by a previous review was not hot enough. Accompanied by a burnt butter finger cake kept me smiling all day!
Went there over the weekend, they were about to close for a function but squeezed us in for some brunch before they closed! Which was lovely! Also very friendly staff and were fantastic with our son which is always a bonus! Food was great had the French toast with quince and mascarpone absolutely delish!
Underneath a new set of units overlooking Musgrave Park you will find Merriweather in South Brisbane. Part-owned by the man behind Cup Coffee, part-owned by Mairi MacKinnon you may think Merriweather is the original Cup Cafe all grown up. The other end of Russell Street is West End bohemian, the Merriweather end is not. The interior is suited to the stylish young crowds you will find gathered here along with the Kees van der Westen Spirit Triplette. One thing you can guarantee is if Cup Coffee is in the hopper then you are in for a special coffee. The House blend is specially roasted for Merriweather, today we had the seasonal Five Star Day blend. At the moment it consists of 50% Ethiopia Wote and 50% Costa Rica Principe Azul. Latte Lad started with his namesake and found the latte to be quite subtle and smooth in flavour, yet without tasting weak—quite an interesting combination of qualities. The single origin on offer was an organic Bolivian Eight Estrellas from farms in Colonia San
Merriweather serves coffee roasted by Cup and is located conveniently for many businessmen and businesswomen for a quick coffee. Whilst coffee is pretty up there, they have a limited menu for breakfast and lunch. However, they do bake daily muffins, cakes and assorted desserts which may be ideal for a quick morning tea or afternoon tea if you're in that area. On one occasion, my friend and I landed at Merriweather for breakfast and both ordered the granola which came with milk, buffalo yoghurt and fresh strawberries. I think they use Farmer Jo muesli (but I may not be 100% correct). I ordered a latte, and like other Cup coffees, it didn't disappoint me. Cup coffee is more on the bitter side of aromas with tinges of butterscotch. I have ordered cappucinnos from here before and there's is quite different - instead of sprinkling chocolate powder, they use Bahen & Co. chocolate. I found it to bit a bit overpowering with the coffee though. The interior of Merriweather is very clean, moder
The dish was presented in a very simplistic way; two perfectly poached eggs with gooey yellow yolk carefully placed on top of a slice of thick sourdough that had been smeared with creamy labneh, then with a handful of mushrooms and a sprinkle of pistachio nuts, the dish was complete. The mushrooms tasted very fresh and slightly firm in texture; they were beautiful. I would've easily eaten much, much more, but self-restraint was shown.
Merriweather offers a simple breakfast menu and several lunch specials that change each day. A bunch of delicious cakes and muffins are also on offer up at the counter, upon which there is a shiny massive coffee machine serving out a specialty roast and single origins from Cup Roastery.
I would give this 10 stars if I could. We are always on the lookout for gluten free friendly places as Saturday and Sunday brunches are our ritual. This is by far our favourite (my partner is not gluten free and loves this place as much as I do). The food is sensational, we love it so much we come most weekends. I can’t believe how much value for money you get. The coffee is fabulous and the staff are beyond amazing. This place won us over. Their knowledge of allergies is wonderful and their menu range is just superb. Xx
Lovely clean and cozy cafe, staff are very attentive, bubbly and happy - lots of smiles! Portion sizes are great and so are the prices. A few vegan options available.
Coffee tastes great, soy iced latte was smooth and great flavour. A bowl of chips is only $4 and plenty to share between two. No drinks menu - average price for coffee, smoothies and juices also available.
It can be very loud outside as it’s next to the street, loud trucks and traffic sometimes. It’s lovely to sit when there is a breeze. Staff did forget one coffee but were very apologetic and polite about it.
The coffee is amazing and really wakes me up (that’s the whole point right?)
The food is great and flavourful! And the bacon, OMG the bacon, it’s not too salty to let me want to drown in water, so good!
Definitely recommend if you want a chill breakfast on a weekend morning with your friends
tasty food and coffee, generous portion, excellent value and SUPER SUPER FRIENDLY STAFF ! I’m 100% satisfied :)
Wonderful cute cafe so close to all the cultural and fun of south bank. This would be one of the most friendly cafes around. Coffee is Coffee Supreme and all the food and cakes are made in the cafe. So good!!
The Two men who manage this cafe are absolutely superb. They always wave at me while I walk past in the morning and always sound delighted when I come in for breakfast. Food is always good and the coffee is good enough for me! (Not the biggest fan of coffee in general) I will say that very often I walk over for breakfast to find that they are just not open with no explanation which is why it is only 4 stars.
I was starving and I thought I would pop in quickly and have a bite. The staff was friendly open to suggestions so I have to menu and quickly brought out the big brekky oh my god that it work the flavours was lovely and I'm probably going to go back to real soon to try something else after menu.
The location is great as well as it's close to Southbank and there's enough seating inside and outside for a quick breakfast.
