Review Michael's Oriental Restaurant & Function Centre - Brisbane

Well handled reservation. Tables neatly organized for our big family of 12. Orders were taken very clearly, waitresses were very friendly and prompt with service. Food itself was well worth the price and tasty. Very nice place to be going to for an elegant dinner.

Last Friday 17th June I had the best vegan curry at Michael's Oriental ever! it was the red curry on the vegan menu. I have been a vegan since 2015. We received very good table service from a attentive, efficient, polite waiter from the Philippines. I have eaten at Michael's Restaurant before food is always amazing.

I'm very disappointed to give a negative review as I have been to this restaurant for many wedding functions in the past and the service and food was absolutely amazing then but I with my family went to the restaurant for dinner last night and was absolutely disappointed and felt very disrespted by the service we received. We arrived and was seated by the waiter but weren't given any menu's. A group of people who came before us and another group who came after us were given their menu's as they were seated. We had to ask for the menu's. Then the waiter taking our order seemed as though he wasn't interested in taking our order and didn't explain how spicy the food is and when our entrees started to arrive we didn't get everything and one of the entrees came with mains. When our mains arrived we didn't get our rice we ordered and had to make do with the fried rice with the curries. The new owner also went and asked the other tables how their meals were but he just totally ignored our table. When the waiter came around to ask we said we didn't get our rice and he didn't even apologise which was very rude. We couldn't finish most of our food as it was sweet and we wanted spicy but the waiter didn't explain that when we first ordered. Even when we were paying we didn't even get a sorry about not getting the rice. Just felt very disrespted as the others tables were treated with such respect and great service but we were ignored as we were from a different dark skinned background.

(My personal opinion) I think the standard has gone down a bit . It was much better a few years ago. The signature fried ice cream used to be served warm fried crispy outside always but served cold this time. Sweet and sour chicken tasted like chicken in water and very little actual fish in salt and pepper barramundi. I felt I ate only cold batter. Tried to call back on number provided but line disconnected.

The best resturant ever, we have been there for a dine in and have also done takeaways. Tonight we were there again and absolutely amazing service and very delicious food. The sweets at the end were just what we needed; the kids enjoyed it, all as well as ourselves. I would definitely recommend this place to all my family and friends.

Amazing food as always! The soup and food was really good, and with a big bucket of rice for a small amount of money it was a great dinner! The staff was lovely as well, and making a reservation over the phone was nice and easy.

Wow! This is a shame, I got the green curry and the Borneo prawns and I was disappointed with both dishes. The Borneo prawns were battered and fried with spring onions and other assorted aromatics and tasted plain and oily. The batter poorly coated the prawns in large globular chunks and the presentation of each prawn was really lacklustre, almost as if my pet blue heeler threw up in a takeaway container sprinkled with chopped spring onions on top! However the prawns were cooked well and was the only redeeming aspect of the dish. Furthermore the Thai green curry was absolutely horrendous! Unlike the prawns the curry looked edible although the flavour profile of the curry completely contradicted its appearance. Presented with a sickly sweet artificial curry sauce of which mostly tasted like coconut milk and sugar, the curry of which I was hopping would redeem my unfortunate purchase completely let me down. Although with all this negative talk about the food which is completely inedible I would like to say that the jasmine rice was cooked to perfection not too dry or wet. For those of you looking to dine or take out from this establishment I would not recommend!

Never had a better green thai curry. We were pleasantly surprised, such a good choice. And good rice, the whole order was amazing. Definteley reccomend above everything else we have had in Sunnybank.

I have been to Michael's Oriental twice, first for my school semi formal in 2009 and just recently. I ordered the Lemon chicken & calamari balls to share with my partner and both meals were nice. The calamari balls were delicious and calamari wasn't chewy. The lemon chicken was zesty and flavoursome (we ordered a special fries rice on the side). I wouldn't mind coming back here again.

I've been to Michael's Oriental on two occasions - and both times they were for wedding receptions. I enjoyed the multiple course meals, and the service was of a high standard. Good place for a more formal meal and good Chinese fare.

Michael's is my local Chinese takeout, I usually take away Mongolian lamb, chicken with cashews and friends rice and prawn crackers ( a massive bag for $5) lamb n chicken are both tender and full of flavours, the service is exceptional and it usually take 20 mins to get the meals ready, which works out well for us. I would highly recommend Michael's. I've never been disappointed.

We have been coming to Michael's Oriental for a number of years now. Our favourite has always been the flat fish, and their pineapple curry. I feel like however, the food/level of service has gone down a bit over the years, which is a shame.

Great food and great selection. <br/>I do enjoy ordering the banquet menus as it gives room for selection and to try things I wouldn't normally pick on the menu. Portion sizes are fantastic too although class is still maintained. <br/><br/>Great ambience for a group setting or a couples dinner. Service is fantastic and we always love Michael coming to the table to greet his customers and get to know where they come from. <br/><br/>Always a family favourite - high recommended. <br/>Top dishes : beef rendang, lemon chicken, curry puffs and deep fried Icecream.

I had fish and chips and for desert I had an ice cream sundae. The fish was cooked well and the chips were amazing. The ice cream was good with the chocolate sauce.

Since this restaurant moved from Sunnybank Plaza (current venu of Sunnybank Oriental), the owner "Michael" really can extent his PR work and concentrates on arranging functions. Nevertheless, it dosen't mean that a la carte will be a weakness of this award-winning restuarant. I had tried to dine in and found that they are doing a Malaysian Chinese style cuisine. Culinary skills are good, so as the qualities of foods. The only let down was the service and we had to wave our hands quite often to attract the attendence of the wait-staff. Wish the management will keep an eye on it.

Ms Suia. We had a family birthday celebration here recently 7 adults & 1child & 1 baby & it was the most pleasurable dining experience we have had in a very long time. Lovely & safe for our boiterous grandson. Service person was attentive, knowledgeable & helpful.<br/>Food was deliciously morrish & such generous serving. What I appreciated more was the thoughtful service shown to our grandson who was "starving" it was suggested by our service staff to bring his food first which was greatly appreciated I'm sure by all the diners there. The deep fried Mars bars was absolutely divine. Would return again for next family celebration in a heart beat.

Love it!. A really lovely place that I regularly dine at! I personally enjoy the quail and the stir-fry with peanut sauce. The food is great and the service is prompt and friendly. I do recommend it as it is not only a great restaurant to take friends but family (with children) as well.

Happy and Full! :). Great food, quick service and value for money! I was so excited to finally find a well presented Chinese place. The ambience is mice compared to the other joints. Will come back often.

Quality, Atmosphere and Class. Had an absolutely fantastic experience tonight at Michael's Oriental. The customer service, the quality of the meals and the atmosphere while there was brilliant. We could've stayed on for much longer into the night. Thank you Michael and team for affording us this very high class experience. We are definitely raving fans of your establishment.<br/>Harry

Chinese New Year - Dinner on 22nd February, 2015. I have had excellent culinary experiences with Michael’s Oriental. I give below just one of these wonderful experiences. The ambience of the restaurant and the food prepared was absolutely amazing! The care that was taken in every respect is unparalleled!<br/><br/>From the minute we walked in, we were taken such care of, right till the end of the meal, when Michael made it a point to talk with us and make us feel at home. The tables and chairs were well laid out. The meal was certainly tantalizing, beginning with the appetizer 'Yee Sang', followed by foods appropriate for the occasion. Every dish was unique - the softest steak (Prosperity come Early Steak), I have ever tasted, the interesting Fortune chicken served in a pineapple, the well done trout which was part of the Abundant Wealth Fish dish..not to forget the lovey desserts !<br/><br/>In addition to all the culinary delights, the appearance of the Chinese dragons and a magician's show (at each table), added to the enjoyment of the evening! <br/><br/>The above is a reflection of the ‘perfection’ that Michael’s Oriental displays, and I would recommend it to anyone, whether it be for a personal meal or a function!!

Great food and service!. Very happy with food and quality of professionalism shown! Will definitely return!

BLAND AND BURNT. Recently had lunch here. I was very disappointed. The nasi goreng was a basic fried rice with no attempt to create an authentic Indonesian/Malay dish. The kiew tiew was bitter due to being burnt. It seemed that the food was rushed even though we were the only customers. We won't be back.

I ate here recenty and the food was delicious especially the lemon and honey chicken. Staff are very friendly and overall was an enjoyable experience! Will definitely come back again

Enjoyable. Entrée's took a while in arriving. The satay chicken (entrée) and the honey chicken (main) were both a bit over-cooked, the other mains, Butterfly Chicken and Mongolian Lamb were not disappointing. Overall a pleasant meal out...we have eaten at Michael's before and will do so again.

We ordered the chilly prawns and vegetable mixed stir fry. I asked to get a fewScallops added but the decided to add prawns too. Ok. Rice also came out in a small bucket ( wasn't even enough for 2 people, we were scraping the bottom ) plus we ordered 2 x cans of diet coke. So we ate it and it wasn't bad. Went up to the counter to pay and man says $77 dollars thanks. I neatly fell over!!! $77??? For that? Wow! Ok! So I started going thru the bill. I was shocked- <br/>RICE $ 10 ( wasn't even enough for 2 people- appalling - $10? Are you kidding me? That's a compete rip off. <br/>2x diet coke $4.50 each!!! = $9 OMG!! The MOST I've EVER paid for a can of drink. <br/>Chilli prawns $29 ( frozen king prawns too) <br/>Then GARLIC PRAWNS- hang on, I got veggies with a few scallops!! - which was $13 now it's a whopping $29!! So $16 for 4-5 scallops! Oh dear! <br/>Needless to say we won't be back to get ripped off again. No thank you. <br/>The food is normal Chinese takeaway style on a shell shaped plate- apparently that's fancy these days? <br/>The music plating in the restaurant is " hill song" - ??? Not very authentic Chinese to me. <br/>The wait staff were very eager to take our orders ( I didn't even get a chance to look at prices as I was under pressure to order!!) he gave us literally 30 seconds to look and asked if we were ready. <br/>Over all I won't dine in ever again- if anything I suggest take away so much cheaper. Food was tasty but prices really let it down.

Fabulous. I have been here a few times now and the food is top quality. Not the cheap run of the mill Chinese cuisine. All free of MSG which you can tell when you eat it, you can taste all the individual flavours. Simply perfect. I love the beef with basil, pumpkin curry and pretty much everything. There is not a bad dish on the menu. Very fresh ingredients and a mark above anything else in the area. If you like quality then it is a must try

Exceptional customer service, fast and friendly and great food. Recently went to Michael's for dinner whilst on a business trip. Found the food lovely, not full of MSG, sauces were subtle, menu was diverse and being involved in customer service for 30 years, I am stickler for good service, Micheal's staff were exceptionally friendly, even during their peak times, helpful also with the menu.<br/><br/>So impressed was I with the above, that I chose this as a reunion meeting place the following night with an old school friend I have not seen for 25 years, I do not regret it at all. Not only was the food lovely, but so too the staff and we were the last to leave, the staff were in no rush to move us on, as I have experienced previously and Michael came out at the end after a busy day to have a friendly chat also.<br/><br/>Definetely will be back to dine at Michael's Oriental when next in town. All staff need to be congratulated for their exceptional service. Thank you.

BEST QUAIL IN THE WORLD. My family and I have been dining at Michael's at least once a week since it opened in 1989, 24 years. The food is always excellent. Our favourite is the Quail. You have to test the Quail....it's addictive and the best in the world. Must also try the duck...wow ! and Pumpkin Curry Chicken! The food is always fresh and they don't use re-cycled oil, chemicals etc, unlike other cheaper restaurants around market square. Take a look at the photos of wall of fame, you will see Former Prime Minister John Howard, Singer John Farner Actor John Jarratt, King walli Lewis, Lord mayor Graham Quirk etc.

Fabulous food and service!. Never have been to such nice Asian or Chinese resturants in Brisbane! The food, including, for example, S & S fish and their remarkable Crispy mar bars, so beautifulllllll!!!! Besides, you would never experienced a Chinese restraunt with such high-standard service.<br/>Very recommendable place!

Food was ok, service was ok. The biggest regret about dining in was the exorbitant price of a meal for dinning in. The same meal from the takeaway menu are marked up by at least 30%. Eg. 4 spring rolls $9!!! The restaurant has lost my patronage.

Excellent restaurant. Found a quality slip once and reported to staff. We were thoroughly taken care of and made to feel important to their business. These people know how to keep clients

Fantastic!!!. From the moment I entered the building and was greeted by their beautiful Chinese hostess I felt welcome and comfortable. The ambience was only surpassed by the delicious food and gracious service. I fully recommend you to try Michael's Oriental for a truly superb dining experience.

Hidden gems in the South Side!!!Best Pumpkin Curry Chicken ever!!!. I was dragged along by few friends to this asian restaurant. For me...There is not much surprises from asian restaurants in Brisbane I wud say. Before I arrived, all I can think of is "just another asian place"... I can admit that I was completely wrong!!! Their menu is rather impressive. Beside all those typical asian dishes, e.g. mongolian lamb, sweet sour something... Their curry is a must try. I have ordered Pumpkin curry chicken, and it tasted sensational, I can tell they don't just put some coconut milk n curry powder n mix together like the places at Market square and very flavorsome, i can taste that they have put lots of herbs to achieve this favor, best of all no msg. This dish is served in a actual pumpkin.. So fancy... other dishes are up to standard too. The thing that I like about this place is, most of their dishes involved using lots of herbs and spices. I gusse this is what true asian cooking all abt. Definitely not "JUST ANOTHER ASIAN PLACE". I surely will be back to try other dishes... Money that worth spent !!

Excellent. I have been a regular at Michael's for the past 6 years both dining in & takeaway. Michael's is my choice for fine dining in the Southern Suburbs. The atmosphere at Michael's is relaxing & pleasant. Staff are friendly & attentive to the customers needs. The food at Michael's is leagues ahead of anything else around. The ingredients are fresh, no MSG or chemicals used. I can't recall ever being disappointed with my dining experiences. In contrast I have eaten at Market square in some of the Asian restaurants & they have been everything Michael's is not - loud, ordinary food, lousy service. If you want fine dining Michael's is the place & the price is very reasonable. <br/><br/>Michael & his partner are very personable with the cliental & make sure that your dining experience is memorable. <br/><br/>Thumbs up from me. My wife & I love this place.

Refreshing. I had visited this place about a year ago with friends and although the food was ok I wouldnt have gone out my way to reccomend it. However I recently attended a function here and the quality of food has increased dramatically. <br/>I eat out a few times a week and usually will head down to market square for some cheap eats but after experiencing some of the dishes here (especially the Malaysian curry lamb) I think i'll have to fork out a couple of extra dollars and make the trip back to Michael's. There was a sign up advising of a new chef so maybe that explains the dramatic increase in quality who knows.<br/>Food - Amazing, Service - No complaints, Price- Reasonable.
