Mons Sabai Thai was a really lovely place to go out for our first girls catch up since restaurants have reopened. The service was excellent. We chose curry puffs and duck spring rolls to start (both good, but curry puffs were better than spring rolls). We then chose the red emperor yellow curry (special) which was really delicious, lovely blend of spices and with a good amount of spice for mild. We also shared the chicken stir fry which was nice, pretty standard. The coconut rice went really well with each. Sharing two entrees and two mains was plenty for three of us.
Our waitress was very good, we took her recommendation of the fish curry because she described it so well! Service was prompt but not rushed and we weren’t hurried out when we ended up the last guests in the restaurant.
Mons has been consistently strong over the years and is a great local restaurant. Will definitely return.
Had a great meal here. The spring rolls and roti were super fresh. Massaman curry had lovely flavour and the beef cheeks in it were cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly and helpful. I’ll definitely be back.
Came here for my friend's bridal shower, sat at the separate function room, at the back of the restaurant. The room was separated by a transparent glass from the rest of the stores, thus was not so private.
The ambience of the restaurant was great; slightly dimmed lighting and nicely decorated with various green plants. The service was also quite fast.
Ordered various food including Pad Thai and the Massaman Curry. Both tasted great; the spices are perfectly balanced and not too overwhelming, giving it a nice kick in the mouth. Also tasted the Red Chicken Curry and Cashew Nut Chicken, which were great as well. However, all of the food were relatively small in portion size.
A good place for a date or a night out for friend, especially if you live near the area.
Foods were very tasty and well presented . Only I wish the portion is a bit bigger for their price . Their beef curry is amazing . Beef was tender like melting in your mouth . Highly recommended . Make sure you book the table to avoid the queues when they are busy
Staff were very friendly, the girl who served us in particular was very smiley. Atmosphere was warm and inviting, a casual yet still classy dining experience. This place seems like a good option for catch ups with friends or family or a lowkey date. The food took a while to come out, however overall was good! I had the Veggie Pad Thai, which I cannot fault. A little bit more on the pricey side when it comes to Thai food in Brisbane but I would still recommend it.
Staff where friendly & attentive. We had the Bangkok platter for two, yum calamari & chicken ginger stir fry - food was awesome. I also thought the restaurant decor was nice. We will definitely go back again
Fried Chicken Connoisseur
+4
Ambience 4.5/5
Nice atmosphere and very busy on a Friday night. Bamboo backdrop with running water.
Service 3.5/5
Greeted with “water or sparkling”. However one time was here, deliberately pointed out “no peanuts” and they were placed in our dish - requiring antihistamines and dampened an otherwise great night.
Food 4/5
Quality of Thai food is great. Some of the best in Brisbane. However have to deduct a mark for the peanut issue as above, and also the jasmine rice isn’t cooked well - bit soggy and broken.
Recommended dishes
Massaman beef cheek curry - very tender and flavourful
Pork belly special
Isan Crying Tiger salad
Tom yum soup - great depth of flavour
Update July 2018
I am upping my rating to a 4. I went again tonight with friends who loved it and all meals ordered were great. Very happy! We got the duck curry again and it was much better than my last try. The isan crying tiger salad was lovely, as was the wagyu basil stir fry - all delicious!! Thank you!!

I have been to Mons Ban Sabai a couple of times in the past and found it to be generally solid Thai. Today we had dinner a bit later for a Sunday because our family had been to a show. We had an 8pm booking and were advised the kitchen closes at 9pm but I see online that their restaurant remains open until 10pm. Our table ordered separate meals but some of us shared entrees. My partner and I shared a Green Papaya Salad, he got the Pad See Ew and I got the Island Duck Curry. They asked if we would like all the food at the same time and got the feeling this was the preference but we were fine with that anyway. Meals came out very quickly. 4 of the 5 of us had a beer or wine and had barely touched them before food came. The waitress (who was lovely) asked "is that all the food you are waiting for?" as she was walking off and my partner said no and indicated his father had not received his hokkein noodles. We saw her duck to the kitchen so thought it was coming. Unfortunately, we all finished entrees and mains before she asked how it all was and realised his meal was not coming. He was okay with it in the end but he was hardly going to accept their offer to prepare his meal now that we had all finished. On top of that, it would have been 9pm and they started closing windows and we felt rushed, even though the restaurant was open another hour after the kitchen closed. We had wines to finish but felt quite rushed. Anyway, the food- the salad was tasty and always is. Really fresh and zingy with good textures. My curry was quite beautiful, if anything a little sweet for my liking though I am finding lately with local Thai places that sweetness tends to dominate instead of having a balance with sour, salty, spicy flavours. The Pad See Ew was a little underwhelming, a tad bland. It is good Thai but not the best I have had. Mistakes happen so no hard feelings on the missed meal but it is relatively expensive. (Photo attached is not indicative of portion size as we'd already eaten some!!)
Incredible flavours, portion size was spot on and the service was the best I’ve had in a long time. The ambiance was great, not too noisy, and seating comfortable. We will be back.
The food and service are both excellent. Recently refurbished, the new furniture and painting give the restaurant a light and clean feel. Always busy you must book a table. The only downside is that Mons is BYO only and there isn't a bottleshop nearby, so come prepared. Only $3 per person corkage which is super cheap. I highly recommend the beef massaman curry, the island duck curry and the spring rolls.
We were a bit unorganised and hadn't planned anything for dinner on the night of my birthday. My mum has been to Mons Ban Sabai Thai lots of times and noted that there was vegan options so we thought we may as well give it a go. The inside is so lovely and warming and the staff are the same.
We started off with the vegan spring rolls and the lamb curry puffs for entrees (to share). The food came reasonably fast, I think it was around 15 minutes. I loved the spring rolls and my meat-eating brother loved them as well!! My family says the curry puffs were excellent as well.
For the mains we decided to order a bunch of plates to share again. We ordered the massaman curry, hokkien noodles with chicken and I got the basil stir fry (made vegan) with tofu, we also got two serves of rice! I have to say, the basil stir fry had perhaps the BEST tofu I have ever eaten in my life (and I eat a lot of tofu)!! The sauce it was cooked in, the softness, it was literally perfect!! The vegetables went perfectly and the sauce was amazing with them as well. The massaman curry was a favourite with my family, the plate was almost spotless by the end of it!! The hokkien noodles were good, I think everyone was too full from the other meals, we took this one home in a takeaway container. The rice accompanied all the meals really well.
We were't originally planning on getting desserts because we had bought a cake home earlier on that day. We couldn't resist (it was my birthday! I'm allowed 2 desserts if I want them :')!!). I had the black rice pudding with coyo coconut ice cream and my brother got the classic deep fried ice cream. I have never had black rice or rice pudding before so it was an interesting experience. It tasted delicious! The coconut ice cream mixed perfectly with the rice and it was so sweet!
Overall, this is an amazing Thai restaurant with incredible food and service!! There's are variety of vegan and vegetarian options as well as lots of meat based meals so it suits everyone!! I had a really great birthday dinner and I'm so glad we chose Mons Ban Sabai Thai. I would definitely recommend checking it out whenever you're in Camp Hill!
Amazing food! I had the jungle duck curry and was lovely. We also shared the chicken ribs starter. The staff were all friendly and will to assist with picking out meals. Highly recommended.
Love this Thai place! My favorite dish is the Duck & Lychee red curry. Amazing! We used to live around the corner & have takeaway often too. It was always as good as their dine in. Would definitely recommend this place. Enjoy x
Really amazing Thai food, fresh and great flavours. A bit more expensive than your standard but I'd say it's worth it! Tried the pad Thai and cashew nut with prawns and both were delicious! Highly recommend.
Food was good and came out quickly however we did get forgotten about once we sat down. Perhaps they need some more staff as they seem very busy and mainly take away focused.
I would return though-
This is easily the best Thai I've been to. Look, everyone claims their local Thai is good, but this is exceptional. The Red Duck (Island) Curry is brilliant with amazing flavours, fresh lychees, and crispy duck pieces. Another standout is the Tamarind Snapper and Pad Thai is solid. The entrees all pack a punch. Great to dine in or takeaway. Consistently good quality for several years now.
Service was slow but the food was definitely worth the wait. Absolutely amazing Thai food! We would highly recommend the mango salad for entree. The green curry was definitely Thai spicy but with the special coconut rice, balanced out the flavors.
I was hearing on the wind that this was 'the best' Thai restaurant in Brisbane. That being said, I had very high expectations going in. The fried wontons were pretty tasty. The beef stirfry had good flavour, but the beef was chewy. I enjoyed the meal, but I feel that at a touch more expensive than your average Thai, it doesn't seem to set itself apart.
Tonight we ventured to Camp Hill to one of the Venzin Groups empires. It doesn’t seem to match the other restaurants in the group but before the Venzin Group had Mons Ban Sabai it had been named the “Best Thai Restaurant in Brisbane.”. We opted to share three dishes. Firstly, we ordered the Pork Laab $21.90. Which was served in lettuce leaves it was zesty and fresh 9/10.
Happy customers. Nothing to fault with the food! Everything was full of flavour, and they were beautifully presented, interesting dishes. Service was good, the only issue was we paid for corkage, and the waitress didn't give us ice, nor poured the wine for us (what were we paying for?). A little on the pricey side for a thai restaurant, but I was happy to pay given the quality of the food.
Exceptional food, though the kitchen is closed at 9:15pm on a Saturday!?!?
We came here as it has a good rating and were not dissapointed. Service is good, food very tasty and prices OK. Good for a suburban restsurant.
Oh my god!. I had never tried Thai before and I'm glad we chose this place for my first Thai experience. Fantastic service, punctual meals, and they tasted absolutely amazing! For entree we had peanut satay skewers and they were to die for! For main we had more peanut satay chicken with vegetables and soft shell crab. Oh MY GOD! A-mazing!
Would definatly come back. Again and again!
Fabulous Local Thai!. I am lucky enough to live nice and locally to Mons Thai Restaurant. This place has their thai dishes perfected, I especially loved the massaman beef curry, it was sensational. The spring rolls are amazing too. If you are looking for an cute and cosy thai place for dinner (or takeaway) this is the one for you. I will definitely be back!
We ordered multiple dishes and shared them with our big group. Deeeeelicious!!!! Every dish that was put on the table was yum. Friendly staff, nice food and a relaxed atmosphere!
Will definitely go back!
Had dinner with a group of friends at Mons San Sabai last night. Was absolutely delicious! The service was impeccable and friendly and the food was amazing! Will definitely be back :)
Tasty food, nice staff. It is expensive for what it is, maybe if they didnt make so many carrot flowers they could lower the meal prices. Not many vegetarian options but the ones they have are good.
Love it here ! Super friendly staff, big meals and tasty authentic Thai food ! What more could you ask for at your local
Packed full of flavour. My wife and I used to live one street away from "Mon's Thai Rarnaharn" which is owned by the same family I think. Both have been excellent for the countless take-aways and visits we've had over the past 4 years. We've taken many friends there and all have agreed that the quality is top notch. One of them even went back for one of the cooking classes they offer and really enjoyed it
Consistently great!. This is our local Thai and we couldn't be more chuffed about it! The food is always amazingly fresh, service fantastic and atmosphere is fabulous. On a recent visit, we requested a glass of white without seeing the menu, only to be informed that unfortunately they didn't stock it but they would be more than happy to get a bottle from the restaurant next door - they are amazing! We've been eating / taking out from Mon's for the past 8-9 years and never had a bad experience - and the cooking school is great!!
Fresh clean flavours. Enjoyed spicey green papaya salad for entree shared between two which given the chilli content made ideal for sharing. My wife enjoyed the stir fry Chicken with oyster sauce and I a nice spicy green curry with chicken. The service was fast and flavours complex and servings quite large. Not the cheapest or best Thai but certainly good, fresh, clean flavours and enjoyable meal close to home.
Our local Thai and certainly the best in Brisbane. Food quality and service level never waivers. Fragrant fresh herbaceous aromas brings back childhood memories of my mum's Thai cooking. Everything is a winner on the menu.
Quality Thai. Have eaten here and gotten takeaway dozens of times.
Constantly delivers good quality Thai.
Standouts are the island curry, massaman and for something different the BBQ eggplant.
I was completely surprised to find this hidden but very busy restaurant last night. I'd heard good things but we were slightly disheartened as the Thai fish cakes were terrible and on a Tuesday night we waited an hour for our mains. Lucky they were tastey but I still prefer Green Papaya.
Very tasty Thai staples. worth the steep prices. skip the fish though. tamarind fish could have been chicken given its texture. still I'll be back.
Great Thai in Camp Hill. Living just around the corner we often get takeway and go down for a meal here for time to time. Great place, good service well priced and good meals. The coconut prawns are great, the money bags very tasty and the red duck curry and Chu Chee Talay are some of our favourites. Don't be afraid to let them know if you want a bit more chili, like most places they are a bit conservative on the heat if you don't ask for it.
There is a reason this place is a local institution.
Dinner by the Papaya Tree. We came for a dinner on a busy Saturday evening.
Although the wait was slightly longer than usual, it was definitely worth it! The service was more than great. The waitresses were very friendly and helpful, and the food was perhaps the best I've ever tasted. It was the perfect combination of spices and fresh ingredients.
We were seated outside by the papaya tree and the atmosphere was very romantic and it was just perfect!
Ordered: Green Papaya Salad, Tiger Prawns Curry and a Chilli Crab dish
Definitely highly recommended.
Attended sat cooking class- was so beautifull relaxing morning. Food tips totally mind blowing - can't wait to try at home. Owner trained us and really gorgeous person that goes out of his way to make it a pleasant morning for all. 110% recommend this ....
New management. I have come here many times over the last few years but recently got takeaway dinner here and it appeared to have a new management. The food is still very good, especially enjoyed the fried rice. However, steamed rice is now an extra you have to pay for which seems a bit rich in my opinion. Servings appeared to be smaller too? Although the food is still mouth-watering the small changes that have been made make it not what it once used to be.
Been back a few times since my last review. I must say since my last review this place has definatley improved ALOT, great food friendly staff, and great to see the owner out on the floor a really good personal touch, only a 5 min walk from my house so will keep going back!! and you can byo wine, beer and rtds!
Nice space, nice food. Great place. you can see into their kitchen and it looks clean. the food is good too but a little on the expensive side and they are very accommodating with your orders. might be a bit pricey for takeaway. nice to dine-in there.
Our local Thai - splendid authentic food- genuine Thai service and cultural influence. Great value for money, fresh delicious food!! Never disappoints!!
I can still taste the red duck curry - delicious!
Vegetarian delights. Love the fresh ingredients and flavours here. Was especially delighted that the waitress was able to tailor my wife's dietary requirements. This place has won many awards and it's easy to taste why. Great place for vegetarians, if you see a meat dish you like, ask them and they'll cook it with tofu.
Top notch quality Thai food. Nestled amongst the Camp Hill dining precinct is the Mons Ban Sabai Thai restaurant. This place also doubles as a Thai cooking school whom have won several awards.
The food is fantastic, unfortunately their massaman isn't the best.
You can sign up for their anniversary/birthday club and every year you get sent out a buy 1 get 1 free voucher personally sent by the owner.
They also have another restaurant at the Corso, Seven Hills called Golden Buddha.
Great food reasonable prices. Great decor and friendly speedy service. A really nice atmosphere in the restaurant, comfortable and welcoming but also very Thai. The food is delicious. The soft shell crab was a highlight and so was the yellow curry ordered by my youngest son. The food tastes great - genuine Thai flavours, just bursting with flavour with every bite.
Possibly the best thai place in Brisbane though there can be a bit of inconsistency in sweetness and spicyness at times.
The first thing you could notice is the humble Spring Roll - even this is special at Mons Ban Sanai. It only gets better from there. Add to this the friendly and engaging staff of which there is just the right number to ensure real service.
I had a fantastic time at Mons Ban Sabai, with each of the fresh and delicious Thai dishes hitting the spot. While everything was good, I had a couple of top picks - the Gaeng Massaman, mild tender beef stew with peanuts & potatoes was superb
Gai Satay – marinated chicken fillets with peanut sauce and Goong Maprow – Fried coconut prawns served with sweet chilli sauce. The prawns were actually my favourite, the crispy coconut coating was very crunchy and moreish. The satay sauce served with the moist chicken was flavoursome without being “just peanuts” as some tend to be.
