Review Alfred & Constance - Brisbane

Fareena Hold
We had a wonderful experience in this boutique hotel, I enjoyed the atmosphere and feel of this hotel, my room was nice and clean very comfy bed. Complimentary drinks were provided it even had water to drink. The only sad part was the heated pool was not warming up and it was very dirty. The staff on when we arrived lacked to pass us information she wasnt much of a help with stuff, however she mentioned she was new, overall the experience was great, the receptionist we met while checking out was very friendly and bubbly. We recommend this hotel and we will definitely be back when the roof top bar is open.

What a great find. From the moment we entered and were greeted by the friendly receptionist, everything about this stay was wonderful. Coffee machine was a nice touch and the bed was comfy. FREE minibar! Yes free. And there was a complementary drink included from the roof top bar. Great cocktails there and a lovely place for pre-dinner drinks. I will definitely stay here again.

Good hotel located in the Valley in Brisbane. We arrived late and they were accodating in the access. They room was good and worked perfectly for us. They have free mini bar and coffee pod machine in the room which was well appreciated. It's in a good location right in the valley with heaps of pubs and clubs around, as well as the train station just down the road.

The staff were absolutely amazing. Juan, Fabrice, Alejandro and Dan were absolutely perfect and they were so nice. We attended a 21st there and I have never experienced such amazing service. So grateful to have had these staff working because it really made the night so special for the birthday girl. Thank you so much!!!

Cute & tidy little hotel tucked away in the valley, close walking distance to pubs & the free mini bar is an excellent touch! Parking was very short walking distance. Good value for money, Would stay again.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. We had to be there by 7pm, travelling from interstate, or the reception closed, so watch out for that. Staff at reception were surly, disinterested, unhelpful and unable to communicate with guests. The evening receptionist could hardly wait to get away. Room was very small and smelled mouldy. View of a brick wall. Two very loud functions in the roof top bar, directly above our room which we were not warned about. Party guests were screaming and yelling till very late. The bed was hard. No glass door in the shower so water went all over the floor. TV was awkward to operate. Overall disappointing. Don’t bother staying here- it was awful!

More like a boutique hostel than a hotel: We booked through Airbnb, was overcharged big time. There was holes in the wall and the light fixtures didn’t have light bulbs in. The bed was quite comfy but overall It was not a good experience at all.

My go to hotel when I want to stay in town for a night out. 5-10 mins walk from restaurants and clubs, but just outside the noisy zone. Beds are comfy and mini bar is free. No USB charging points, which is a downside for me - never remember a plug.

Just fancied a quick drink where I didn’t have to shout and this place is amazing great food and $6 basics, wines and all beers from 4-6. Will definitely go back
What a wonderful experience I had at Alfred and Constance!
Perfect venue, polite staff and delicious food!
Big fan of the drinks menu too, the mates rates topping it off
JB
Cool old Queenslander type pub. Decent steak with very friendly and obliging staff. Great place to keep it cas and have lunch and a bevy. Great locale too.

A fantastic place - great service and drinks and a good food menu. Love the Caesar salad, the nachos were also good but lacking salsa/sauce. Good chips and burgers also.

Went here solo for an early pre-dinner drink and bite whilst waiting to meet up with friends.

The share plates were on special at this time, at $10 per plate. I ordered a cider and the salt and pepper calamari, which was perfectly cooked - crispy exterior and tender interior. I also liked how the squid tentacles were also included, which added texture.

Very friendly and efficient service. Casual ambience with indoors and outdoors seating. Reasonable prices.

Overall, a nice introductory taste of what Alfred and Constance has to offer.

Venue really interesting and a range of drinks that should satisfy most people. Food is rushed but no worse than other places. Bar service by a few is terrible, among the worst I have experienced. Rude, argumentative and intentionally spilling when serving drinks. Toilets not well serviced and check for paper before parking up. However, one young guy was all over it once he was told (it was early so shouldn't have been empty). It was over crowded and this wasn't managed well at all.
However, with a good clean (floor was very sticky), basic health and safety application and a bit of customer relations training it will be well worth going back one day.

Last time we visited the A&C we struggled to find a table it was so busy! However service was fast and while the food selection was quite large for what we would deem a pub/bar first and foremost, the food came out relatively fast. Unfortunately flavours were a little bland but the quality of the ingredients was top notch. Points off for poor lighting and lacking flavour. However would return to give them another shot!

Not amazing but not bad either. I'd probably go back for some share platters and drinks but would skip on the mains. They are very overpriced for what you get.
Daxaparag21
Well if you think the pics of food you see here are for real then quarter what you see and double what you expect to pay.
Shocking and poor quality food and
It seems that it's so trendy that it can get away with starving its patrons and
ripping them off. They got a work group of us with over 15 people attend on a
Friday lunch. Shocking service and staff that don't smile. NEVER AGAIN
Ray
Desserts are definitely delicious here, the bomb alaska is incredible. I've only come here for desserts after getting mains at Kwan next door, but for $17 per dessert , they're definitely up there in price and can't say I go too often because of that. The only reason they aren't a 5 star for me.

AMBIENCE =2.5
SERVICE = 2.0
FOOD = 2.0

Ive heard about this place but visited for the first time today. Setup was fine, but overall seemed dull. Menu is limited and prices are steep. Its okay food to go with drinks... nothing spectacular. Service was average, seemed it was a job for them nothing bad happened...but you know you can tell when its just a job. The place needs some liveliness to it. Food could be better. Dissapointed. Calamari was battered but bland and slightly overdone hence a bitter taste and too much salt. The pumpkin balls were average and the shoestring fries... again dissapointing. The lemon lime bitters... come on..... so below average from a bar.

Came with a group from work and although they let you pay per person at the bar (which is great for bigger groups not wanting to share a bill) this is where the service ended. Care factor from staff today was sub par and lazy. Staff seemed like work was such an effort and they didn't want to be there. Calamari for $16 was bathing in a sea of aioli and was under cooked and translucent (I have never tasted calamari like this) I sent it back and the chef sent if back out swimming again with no garnish and tasting just as bad. I left it. $39 for calamari, a bowl of chips which ended up being my lunch and a glass of wine. No one asked if I was happy with my meal or if they could accommodate me in another way. I will not be back for a meal or recommend this place to friends. Time to lift A&C, and get some cheerful staff!
Hungrygirl
A friend was celebrating her birthday and decided on Alfred and Constance. Even though the food was not good, I got the “famous” pulled pork roll which was dry and served on a stale bread roll, I thought maybe we could still enjoy the night and the atmosphere as we were a group of around twenty people. We were seated at a large table in the middle of the dining hall and it was so packed it got to the point you couldn’t move without bodies being pressed against you while you ate and people trying to snake a chair at any opportunity, they definitely need to limit the number of people in the venue, at least in the restaurant part. It was extremely irritating and so the minute we finished our food we got up and left and went somewhere else instead of spending money drinking there like we’d intended.

I've been a fan of A & C since its inception. But, after a visit there over the weekend, I'm incredibly disappointed. We went with a group of 5 and ordered the carving board share plate upon the recommendation of the waitress. And couldn't believe the portion size.. Value for money was terrible. The service was practically non existent - especially for a party of 6, which grew to 8.
Don't know whether I'll bother going back.

We had a great night here! My cheeseburger was pretty good, and my husband really enjoyed his steak. The piña colada I had was awesome (though the price was a bit steep). Great dessert too. We would definitely come back!

Coffee is absolutely awful, the staff are rude, slow and reluctant to help. and to make it worse the place smells like you're surrounded by cattle poop. interesting.
Nancha
The food are good and reasonable price. I like main meal hmmm I don't remember the name but it is pork with crispy skin also served with roasted garlic. That was wonderful. Also grilled barramundi was great too.
Tastes Like Regret
V. chill, awesome place for drinks with ya mates, really quirky but cool rooms. Ordered a cider, and was reasonably priced and tasted amazing. Friendly service. One of the bartenders were training, and they gave me and my friends 4 free cocktails. Score!!!!!!!!

I organised a dinner for 15 people, all very close friends of mine, majority had traveled all the way up from NSW to be with me on my 21st birthday. 30-40 minutes into being at the table, a staff member came around asking to see ID from all of us. Now we were all over the age of 20, however 2 girls had left their ID in the hotel, as they'd only come to eat. The staff member, very rudely and unapoloegtically told them they needed to leave as soon as they were finished eating, and interrupted again 10 minutes later insisting they wore wrist bands as they were 'minors'. Now I understand the strict laws of underage drinking and the risks the restaurant could face if such an act was caught, but the girls weren't even drinking, just there for dinner. And if it was such an issue for the restaurant, why did they not check ID before we entered, or more importantly, before the entire group had sat down, ordered and paid for meals? I had even called and booked, could the restaurant not tell me then to make sure we all brought ID to avoid this ridiculous situation? It is honestly beyond me. Thousands of restaurants have bars as well, but people are still allowed to eat there without being harassed for ID. Throughout the meal staff members were watching us and lingering like vultures, making us feel very uncomfortable and like criminals, not at all like guests. We were rushed to finish as our plates were cleared very quickly, the staff member immediately returning, again, with such an impolite manner, insisting the 2 girls had to leave, and of course we were not going to make them wait outside in the pouring rain until we finished, so the entire group was forced to go, drinks that were paid for left unfinished. No apologies, nothing. The usual relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere I expect from A&C was completely ruined by such a ridiculous and easily avoidable situation. I'm honestly shocked by the rudeness we experienced, especially AFTER paying to be there. Definitely never returning and if you're going, bring your ID, no matter how old you are or you will most likely receive this condescending and demoralising treatment. And a little business tip A&C, maybe you should inform people before they enter or even better before they PAY that they need ID's to eat in peace and to avoid being treated like dirt. Thank you for ruining my 21st.

NAILED IT 👊🏼
Alfred and Constance really do nail it every time, well on the many occasions that I have eaten and drank there they have.
There winter menu is great, very hearty and creative. Old Queenslander style hotel gone hipster cool, cosy and inviting.
Some good quality meat dishes are on offer here. I went the Wagyu Cheese burger w jack cheese, red pepper jam, dill pickles for dinner tonight it was served with fu#k loads of fries and aioli, my beverage of choice was a pale ale . The cheese burger was actually one of the best I have ever had, that's a bold statement I know ... but it's true. Theses guys don't bluff, the food, the drink and service ... It's all legit.

A&C has been talk of the town since it opened up. Dinner in the area next to Doughnut Time is great. Always great music playing (Black Keys or Childish Gambino...), great humorous interior and friendly, chill staff in accordance with the A&C vibe. Great vegetarian options available in pizza with a one slice option or full pizza. Gourmet, thin and crispy with standard flavour. The waiters are super friendly and efficient, but a little annoying when one of the male staff keeps calling you 'darling' or 'sweetheart'. It's 2016. Overall great place for date night or casual catch up
Bandaru Niharika
Good place to have some drinks but except the chips, food isn't great.
Staff was friendly and ambience was alright.
Dave Janson
Ordered the calamari which anyone would rightfully assume would be battered squid, boy was I wrong.
This dish was a crime against humanity , worse than Chernobyl and the holocost put together. I told the lady it was the worst meal I have ever eaten and she offered me nothing.
May god have mercy on the chefs soul
Thanks for your time
Rebecca
The burger was ok, but I would have preferred a side salad and about 1/4 of the chips. It's a great set up and the weather was perfect for eating outside.
Deleeshious
So mediocre! I can see the hype is all around the setting/decor of this "establishment". Food was such a waste of time, between a group of 6 we ordered a good 8-10 dishes and there was nothing I can write positives about. Service from the girls was a bit arrogant too, like they had forgotten how to smile and were too important to acknowledge us as actual people. Won't be back.

Absolute worst dining experience of my life at Alfred and Constance last night. Booked in for my birthday, 13 people and an almost $500 bill. Salads tasted like dirt, $16.50 for 4 tiny zucchini fritters and 3 sugar snap peas on a plate. Was never offered to order dessert. Was told over the phone when booking that they split bills, but when we went to pay they made us take cash out at the bar for a $3 charge per person instead. Barman told us we didnt have to pay the charge if we got a drink, which 2 of our party got. Then a woman with dark hair in a ponytail on the bar then told us that was wrong and we would have to pay the charge from then on, and then huffed and us and was super rude when we said in that case we no longer wanted drinks. Supervisor was dismissive when we complained about the salad and laughed it off, said to try a better one next time. Staff were dismissive and rude, food was overpriced and average at best, needless to say we won't be back. Worst waste of $500 of my life. 0/10 would not recommend.

Edit: After a message from management regarding this issue, they asked for my contact details so they could discuss this with me further. After I provided my details, I never received a reply and have been ignored since. What a surprise! Reinforcing the terrible customer service I experienced at their venue.

Edit 2: Alfred and Constance have since responded to this complaint. Thank you for your response but unfortunately I am not interested in returning to your establishment.

I give them a 1 because the beer was nice and cold, otherwise this was the most disappointing experience i have had for a long time. This is how the steak is advertised CAPE GRIM PREMIUM RIB FILLET: HAND SELECTED
TASMANIAN BEEF, 100% PASTURE FED, FREE RANGE 300g $39. If we got premium steaks, i would hate to see the non premium. More gristle in both of them than a coles steak. Then its pre cooked and finished off with some char marks. The fat not rendered down properly and stuck in my teeth for the next hour. I had chips instead of the potato. Big mistake, really, how hard is it to get a crunchy chip. Soggy as. The owners need to visit cinco, breakfast creek, station hotel melbourne, stokehouse, to learn what a 40 dollar steak should taste like. Then too add insult to injury, when paying we were slugged with the 2.5% amex charge. This is not on the menu, or at the register, just sneakily slipped in. I will be checking with the authorities on this one as i believe it is illegal to charge without notice. Then the cashier, who was asked to reverse the charge, got all snippy. Claiming it was the credit card co. who was charging us, not the restaurant. When she was corrected, she still kept arguing, with us, people in the finance industry! Perhaps the owners should hire staff that have at least half a clue about customer service. We never complain at restaurants, we just leave. The owners can choke on my $93.00 dollars I (and anyone else i know) will never eat here or at an affiliated business again. I notice they don't respond to reviews on zomato. Maybe thats how the arrogance filters down to the staff.

Lunch menu doesn't start until 12pm so I ordered a toasted popcorn chicken wrap from the counter along with a chai frappe. Neither were nice and definitely not worth the price.
EmilinaMay
Very good food and great cocktails and atmosphere but do not order delivery we got the wrong items and then never got delivered the correct ones bummer
Adrian
Great atmosphere and drink menu is extensive. Pizzas are some of the best in Brisbane. Highlights are the prosciutto and the bbq chicken flavours. Desserts are massive and very rich so make sure you save some room

Went to A&C for the first time last night. Great cocktail - mojito jug! Steak was a bit pricey for what it was. Both other dinner guests enjoyed their respective burgers - a lamb burger & pulled pork, respectively. Good, thick cut chips too with good service.
Kat - Oats And Cheesecake
I have been to A&C multiple times for drinks with the girls but only recently started going for lunch - and boy have I been missing out! The quinoa salad was tasty, colourful and huge, even in the small size, and the lamb cutlets were perfectly tender and flavoursome. The atmosphere is casual but quirky, and the service was great (even letting us order early so we could make a quick getaway back to the office). I'm now slowly making my way through the rest of the menu and can definitely say my tastebuds are impressed!
FoodsterChamp
A&C is a favourite of mine to have a casual drink when I don't want to go to Ann or Wickham streets. My housemates, dad and I had an impromptu dinner after work. A&C has a great dining area, opened and relaxed. We ordered the flat bread, prawn prawn tacos and BBQ pork belly lettuce wraps for entree. While the flat bread and pork belly were a bit plain, the prawn tacos were a stand out with there fresh and exciting flavours. For mains, my father and I shared the Pork Belly main and the salmon sliders. The pork belly's skin was perfectly crispy however the pork itself was lacking flavour which was unfortunate. The salmon sliders were unexpectedly tasty with a nice caper and lemon Mayo.
An A+ for ambience, but I'll stick to coming here for drinks.

Had a really great meal here, the waitresses were really friendly and attentive... Would recommend trying the Salmon Burger & Salted Caramel Alaska, they are something else! Great vibe...

Love the mood lighting, quirkiness and fireplace of @AlfredandConstance popped in especially for the #BakedAlaska and an espresso martini. What a way to finish a romantic night out for 2!
William T
Great place and love the ambience. They had live music and the musician was excellent. Absolutely love the decoration with rustic furnitures. Would come again to chill on a lazy Sunday.
MynameisFood.
Alfred and Constance, the ongoing buzz of this place along with its sisters and brothers of Alfredo's Pizzeria, Kwan Brothers, Chester St Bakery and now, Doughnut Time, all by the same owner, Damian Griffiths. This was a few months back when I ate here, since then, a slight change on the menu so some of the food in this review may or may not be still available in the restaurant. Conveniently placed due mostly of its parking, in which you can get a $5 parking when you dine at any of the restaurants.
Steph
I love this place- typical Sunday lunch type of atmosphere with simple yet tasty food. Really fun place to spend a Sunday and super cool place!
Jessica Robinson
This bar is amazing but BE WARNED! I went for drinks with some friends and 2 friends, a guy and a girl got their drinks spiked in the same night and ended up in hospital. This was with a cocktail and a beer in a bottle. Be careful and watch out for your friends.
Faran Rowhani Farid
Lame and shame. Quite possibly the worst coffee and environment in Brisbane. Good luck with enjoying your coffee with flies buzzing around your table the whole time.

Never again unfortunately
Cathy Bateman
Nice place on a Sunday afternoon.. The service was good, the atmosphere good but the music a little loud to hear others talk in the Vanguard Restaurant.
Food not as good as we would have hoped. The roast pork was dry and really didn't seem fresh and the crackling seemed to have no connection to the whole roast pork we saw proudly displayed. The crackling was more like what you get at a take away. The vegetables and steak were very nice. Moved to quieter area for coffee and more drinks. Very pleasant.
Naomii Sinclair
TERRIBLE! After waiting literally an HOUR for food, they advised us that their printer had broken and they were putting a rush on our food. We watched several other tables eat and leave before we received our meal. When the food arrived it was a 6/10 at best. Burnt toast and undercooked eggs. Won't be back.

DO NOT BOTHER - unless you like being overcharged for inedible food. We dined at Alfred and Constance in December and had the most unbelievably bad meal. We ordered the 500g of roast pork ("apparently" carved from the pig) as it looked great when we walked in the door. The pork was so dry it was like eating cardboard. I have had spit roast pig before and I know how succulent and juicy the meat can be - well this pork tasted like it had been reheated after being sliced hours earlier and it was all in little pieces not much bigger than a 50c piece, which we thought was weird. The apple sauce was average at best and there was only a tiny pile of it that was nowhere near enough for all that pork.

The pork crackling!!! OMG how can they sell that rubbish to anyone that has eaten pork crackling before? It was store bought - you know the dry stuff that breaks your teeth? There were maybe two tiny pieces that came off the actually spit roast, the rest was store bought. Soooo disappointing.

The potatoes, like the pork, were so dry and the skins completely overcooked and dried out. We had a huge bowl of these dry potatoes and were so desperate to eat something that we asked the waitress for some butter just to give them a bit of moisture. Seriously - what am I meant to do with a big dish of dry potatoes. If anyone thinks the above is worth $59 they are CRAZY! We also ordered the green beans which were fine but for $10 completely uninteresting. I would suggest these should have cost $4 absolute tops.

We also ordered the Constance Punch (sickly sweet as to being nearly undrinkable) and the Pimms Jug (tasted like flat coke - wow exciting for $25!).

I emailed Alfred and Constance the week after dining there to let them know how disappointed we were. After receiving a follow up email from the head chef asking for my number so he could call and discuss I never heard anything. I wanted to give them the chance to respond before I posted this review.

Alfred and Constance may be hip at the moment but if you enjoy quality food and drinks DO NOT BOTHER!!!
Lucy Gabb
Too cool for school.... Agree with previous reviews.
Seriously overpriced food.
Dobsessed
2 years ago, the food was good. Now, food is bad and really overpriced. The drinks are overpriced too. Seriously don't bother.
MJ
Staff need a personality adjustment. HannahJane, the cup full of ice is 'best practice' for bartenders. Maximises chill, minimises dilution, generally makes the drink taste better as there is less mixer.

However, I totally agree with you on some of the staff. I'm not sure if the attitude is encouraged by management because it's cool to act bitchy or if it's their natural personality. Either way, was an unpleasant experience during my last visit. Food was reasonable albeit expensive ($24 for a burger).
Hannahjane74
I have never felt so unwanted at a restaurant before. Worst staff in brisbane! Every single one of their staff are so incredibly rude, I have been there a few times thinking maybe I would be greeted and made feel welcome. But no!! never. Im glad im not the only one who thinks they have rude staff....

So expensive aswell and they fill the cup all with ice... so stingy
Danewindshuttle
Great food and drinks. Food was delicious had a fair few items and across the board was very happy, drinks are great also. My only qualm with this place is the staff I have encountered are always very arrogant and pretentious. I could forgive this on a pumping Saturday night because we all know how difficult a bar can be but when its quiet there is no excuse (and its happened every time I have been there). Overall great experience just need to re-evaluate their staffing.
Vicky Huang
Went there for dinner The f.... Went there for dinner
The food is just so-so and overpriced.
I won't say it's a good place for dinner.
Ni_gordo
Over-rated & over-priced. I'd heard great things about this place so I was quite enthusiastic about going. Frankly though, I've rarely been more disappointed.

I had the chicken schnitzel burger for dinner. I could barely find the chicken - a tiny sliver of whiteness covered in a ridiculously hard "crumb". The chips with it were tasty, but I didn't pay that much for a few chips on the side of a plate.

Then I ordered a glass on wine that was declared unanimously by my table to be undrinkable. Approaching the staff I was told that is what you get for ordering cheap wine. At $9.50 a glass I would certainly not consider it to be a cheap wine. When I asked to swap to the 50c more expensive wine, I was rudely told by the wait staff that they wouldn't do it.

So now I've barely eaten some inedible food, and left an almost full glass of wine on the table.

Unless you're there for a big night of drinking (and you don't drink wine), don't bother.
Hannah.schneider
Overpriced, loud and rude staff. At $35 the seared salmon 'main' was so insubstantial I felt genuinely ripped off. You get almost nothing else with it, but for a meagre bed of salad and dressing. In the main dinner area the music is so loud you can barely think let alone speak easily to the person beside you. I completely understand that on a Saturday/Friday night at 10pm it's atmospheric to turn the sound up, but on a casual Monday night it is so beyond bareable. Finally, the staff (and I'm really sorry to say this, but female staff specially) were so rude and abrasive you felt you were in the way rather than an eager customer. I have never written a review here, but I felt so miffed and put off after tonight that I felt compelled to vent. All I've heard from my friends is how much they love A&C, but every time I've gone it's been progressively worse. Sorry :(
DR APPETITE
Here's an idea.. Fire every single person working here and hire monkeys.. I'll assure you they will do a much better job.
Madi23
Hate this place. Staff are .... Hate this place.
Staff are rude. Drinks are overpriced and not fresh. Food average. Needs new cleaners it's dirty everywhere
Jon
So overrated. After two visits, I will say I don't mind the décor, staff and atmosphere. Maybe it is better at lunchtime, as both the dinners I have had, have been lacklustre. The pork both times tasted stewed. How the pork roll is on the Urban Lists: top 50 dishes to try in Brisbane, is a mystery. The haloumi sliders have got to be the best rort I have seen in a while. Even if they tasted magical (they didn't) the price point is enough to leave a sour taste. I really don't see the point in revisiting.
Lisa
To the manager, I had a b.... To the manager,

I had a booking at 8.30pm for 12 people last night to celebrate my birthday and we were seated in the central area. I am wanting to let you know that the music here was uncomfortably loud. We basically had to shout all night and couldn't hear anyone other than the person sitting next to us.

I inquired with the waiter if we could get it turned down and he informed me he couldn't. We also requested to change locations but the only option was equally as loud.

My partner suffers from tinnitis and he had to sit off to the side all evening, only to return briefly to eat. He usually takes earplugs to gigs where we'd expect the music to be loud, but given we were attending dinner, he did not bring them. This morning he woke with amplified ringing in his ears.

I found that the music was unacceptably loud and feel that you need to decide whether the venue is a bar or a restaurant. Having that level of noise at a restaurant is ridiculous. I know that this issue has been brought to your attention and wish that you would listen to the feedback given. I am embarrassed that I had to subject my guests to this environment and will not be returning for dinner again.

Please listen to this feedback fore the sake of future patrons.
Dale
Everything you read here is spot n. Good food poor atmosphere. Food is absolutely A+. Service is very friendly. Music/accoustics is extremely loud and you have to order from typical Brisbane packed bar. Wouldn't go out of my way to go back but if in the area for a good meal, absolutely.
Sasha.m.smith
Mr&MrsSmith. Great little bar but food quite ordinary. Had the A&C burger for lunch today - unfortunately one side of the patty was so burnt the charcoal taste ruined the whole burger. When I told our attendant he said he would let the Chef know. No more was said except when paying the bill that my feedback had been passed on. I can stay home to eat burnt food! What a disappointment.
Rachel Moore
Really bad experience. I ordered the gnocchi, the only vegitarian option if you don't want salad, bland and oily with a bucket of salt for flavor. The best thing I can say about my meal is that it was hot, most of my table mates were served cold burgers. Couldn't have a conversation over the music and had to line up at the bar to order! The staff were all friendly but the overall experience was disappointing. If we hadn't been celebrating a birthday I would not have stayed and I won't be coming back. They need to decide if they are a club or restaurant because they are doing a piss poor job at both.
Hockeyfan
Overpriced & Overrated. Was excited by the menu, but sadly didn't live up to expectations. Meat dishes were dry and bland and we even tried a variety including the suckling pig, chicken skewers, lamb shank, lamb chops, pork ribs. However, cakes looked and tasted awesome, especially the lemon & raspberry cheesecake.
Spectre
Enjoyed the food, much better quality and value than some similar themed ventures ive been to lately. Went for an early lunch and it wasnt crazy busy so felt relaxed. But the music was too loud. Staff were good.
Bengarrard
Clubbing or eating?. The food was general pub fair if a little over-priced. Not bad, but not particularly interesting either. Music was insanely loud which made conversation difficult and eating, vaguely furious. We were in a side area which was poorly lit which added to the unpleasantness. Staff seemed more interested in clearing our plates than whether or not we enjoyed our meal or had everything we needed. Kind of feel this place isn't sure if it's a bar or a restaurant which meant they did neither very well. On the bright side, food service was quick and a good selection of beers were on offer.
Megan Pierce
First timers to Alfred And Constance and I'd have to say would return for a few drinks but will go for dinner elsewhere. I ordered the 250gr pork plate served with crackling, skin on potatoes , apple sauce and a balsamic reduction. Pork had that stewed flavour which indicates that it had been sitting in its own juices for sometime, the potatoes were not cooked all the way through and the crackling was so hard you felt under threat of chipping a tooth whilst attempting to eat it!
Like I said, we may be back for a drink..
Jess Rankine
Leave your vegetarian at home, bring your credit card. You can't deny that the decor is interesting. The drinks are not cheap but I liked mine. The food however was a disappointment. There were no vegetarian main on the menu. Just salads in the sides section of the menu. I think that's pretty poor. The pulled pork bun was really really bland, with no sign of any sauce, spice of flavor.

Sunday sesh!. Came along with some friends and what an awesome vibe! The place was packed but good service, shared a calamari and it was the best I've ever had. Although I had the pork roll and found it quite bland. Love the cocktail jugs! Will be back :)

Worth a visit.. Went for dinner, great vibe... Ordered entrees and mains. Mains delivered without receiving entrees, staff most apologetic, provided piping hot entrees within minutes and comped both. Best calamari for a long time, Memphis ribs were just superb. Staff busy but friendly, food well priced and tasty. Will return, and we highly recommend.

Perfect Spot!. Went to A&C for Good Friday. Such a great vibe, perfect for late lunch tapas with friends and a glass of wine. The calamari was the best ive ever had - tender and not over done, with perfect batter which wasn't too greasy. Will definitely be back!

Great start to the night. Great atmosphere here - gorgeous old Queenslander abode complete with fairy lights and other suitable hipster decor. LOVED the food (we had a selection of starters - calamari was perfectly cooked, the scallops were amazing and the croquettes really crunchy on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside) however the portions were a little small for the price - would have loved more! Can't speak for any of the others but our waiter was so cool! He made our night. Anyway, great place for a drink or a meal.

Awful dish. Absolutely horrendous cauliflower salad.. Awful awful awful! Only had 1 spoonful and I sent it back to the kitchen with no replacement and still paid for it. I'm sorry, but I won't be back!

Afternoon drinks. Really nice atmosphere and cute set up but wouldn't go there for the food! Good for afternoon drinks

Love A&C. Absolutely adore A & C. I love that, within the one venue, you feel as though you are in completely different worlds depending on which level and room you're in. Upstairs you would be forgiven for thinking you're in some tropical paradise with the staff wearing hawaiian shirts and leis coupled with the excessive beach-type decor hanging off each wall. Downstairs, you could easily think you're in a snow lodge in Canada when sitting by the fireplace and gawking at the hanging deer head. Other times, I feel as though I'm part of the Addams family when sitting at the dining table with the bare black and white walls and the infamous hanging skeleton. So I guess you could say the ambience of this place makes it a big winner for me - but I also love the food! It's tasty, affordable and reasonably portioned - what more could I ask for? Only downside to this place is the fact that it can get reeeaaally busy, meaning if you haven't made a booking, you could be waiting for up to an hour to be seated.

Loved the look and feel of A&C, had the A&C burger however wasn't anything to write home about. Would go back, for drinks rather than a meal though.

Had a group of 19 for a bday party and the food was delicious, eg best barramundi ever had, delicious pulled pork sandwich, mojitos, etc. Flexible service. In summary, great time! We will be back!

Great for group meals. Had a work Christmas function here and had a great time. Food was excellent, served quickly and tasted fantastic. Service was professional and friendly, and the whole location had a good vibe. Definitely worth checking out if you get the chance.

Fun Place. A real range of experiences. Loved the casual comfort food, the cool bar next door and finished the night upstairs in the Tiki Bar. This place is great fun from early to late.

Cocktails :). Great cocktails. I was expecting a little more ambiance for a Sunday afternoon - only music upstairs?

Hoity Toity. Well what can I say, I won't rush back to Alfred and Constance...what is really the hype about for this place? Seriously last week I met two colleagues for lunch and we asked to sit in the air-conditioned area. The girl who showed us to a table was quite nice but what followed was nothing but rude.

As we sat down...mind you we were the only ones in this area that consisted of three tables of 6. The other waiter, who had blue hair proceeded to huffily grab all the other cutlery off the table, snatching and grabbing with such gusto and heaving humphing as she did so.....woah!! We ignored it and were polite to her but the whole lunch was such an inconvenience to her....mind you the whole time that it took us to have lunch and leave there was only one other table.

Now the food....ummm we all had nothing that was spectacular, Steak sandwich, chicken burger and beef burger..... All we can say was how under ordinary and " old " stale bread ....gosh you think with the amount of people they put through there that it could be fresh and or at least toast it more so that it can be hidden!! Amateur kitchen staff!!

If you like hoity toity and stale bread....Alfred and Constance is the place for you !!!

Too cool for school!!. A great venue in an awesome location! It is a pity that the staff has such poor attitudes and don't work well under pressure. I have visited several times and have been underwhelmed on each occasion, there are much better bars in Brisbane!!

Food Fails. A&C has a great vibe. It is an inviting set up, open and airy. The food really is average. The pig is particularly poor and disappointing. Sorry, I won't be back as there are much better options available in Brisbane.

Well..... Awesome place with a great vibe, but that's where it ends for me, wait staff all too cool for school, food prices not justified against quality or portion size. Music way to loud in dining area

OMG how wonderful my experience was. food anazing, service fantastic, I'll be back ;) Coctails knock your sox off

Whats there not to love... Recent Sunday Session here consisting of jugs upon jugs of red and white sangria and plates upon plates of 'nibbles' the standout was the calamari (MELT IN YOUR FREAKEN MOUTH GOODNESS) possibly wanted to marry the chef as i devoured it : /

the place wasn't crowded and staff accommodated us wonderfully even as we got merrier and merrier. Great vibe between the patrons and fun to cruise around all the levels :) will definitely frequent again.. must get to know that chef ;)

Came in for lunch, service was very slow, drink orders forgotten and food average, great looking venue with an appetizing menu. Would have loved a great experience but we were clearly not a priority.

Fantastic addition to the Brisbane scene. Love this place!

We booked a table for my friends 30th, the duck was perfect with some ninja cocktails to wash it down. A whole pig cooked in the window and some great music just topped the atmosphere!

Service was prompt, our waitress even arranged a sparkler for the birthday girls dessert

Can't wait to go back !

What a disgrace!. Close friends from the UK had just flown in the night before, in need of a great lunch, we thought we would take them to a hot spot for food and beverage in the Valley... A&C was my first thought, so I booked a table for 1pm.

We were all in a fun-loving eating/drinking mood, all of us were excited for a great experience, but were extremely let down that there wasn't hardly any attention to us in a nearly empty venue.

No service for the first half hour. A reluctant waiter finally came around and asked for drinks, to which we placed an order that never came, we asked again and that seemed to jog his memory.
With menus sitting in front of us for an whole hour, I ended up hailing a waiter and asked to order some bread and dips and informed him that we were ready to order mains.
Dips/starters came but no waiter to take our order. By this point we'd been there for over an hour and a half, I eventually hailed the manager and said that we had been waiting a long time and that we were well an truly ready to place an order.
He then fetched a younger waitress to inform me that the kitchen was now closed!!
....Umm how is it that you can miss taking the order of a table of 9 people in the middle of your restaurant?? With only 4 other small tables and 6 staff members on, I was pretty shocked that we were not looked after.
Especially shocked that the manager handed down this task to a rather worried looking young waitress?? In my experience it's the managers job to handle tricky situations, not to mention ensure all orders are taken before the venue's kitchen closes?
I said to the waitress that we had been here for 1.5hrs, with menus in front of us ready to order, that i was quite upset that we were not entitled to ANY food options... Finally the manager stomped over and angrily informed us that the kitchen had indeed shut, and that he was under the 'assumption' that we knew the kitchen shut early.
Ahh, No sorry you should not have assumed, it doesn't mention it anywhere on the menus about opening and closed times of the kitchen and NO we were not informed by you OR your staff.

We were consolidated with a pizza menu, not nearly what we had hoped for or expected.
Pizza fed our hungry tummies but the service didn't improve. Basically ignored for the rest of the afternoon, we paid in full and left very disappointed, not one sorry or apology for such a clearly avoidable mistake.

I certainly will not be returning to A&C anytime soon nor will any of my guests. I seriously recommend that the management take a close look at their service standards.
Don't promote a table service if you can't provide it. Yes, it's a large venue, but keep it simple and promote bar service only if you can't keep up with the rest of Brisbane's dining standards. Please also be aware that appropriate manners go along way. If we weren't so offended by the managers rude manner maybe we would have stayed for dinner?

A Top Friday Night Out!. I dined at Alfred and Constance with friends for my 21st birthday dinner earlier in December. The food was fabulous and I could not have asked for better drinks and meals; the Dark and Stormy and Ginger Ninja cocktails were the best cocktails that I have ever drunk so far! For my main meal I ordered the A & C Burger which consisted of a succulent beef pattie on a brioche bun with bacon, cheddar cheese and tomato relish. It was a large burger that nearly left me too full for dessert, but was certainly delicious and one of the best gourmet burgers that I have ever tasted. The chips with seasoning and aioli sauce also made a nice side to go along with the burger. For dessert, I had the Chocolate and Marshmallow Brownie, which would have to be the best chocolate brownie that I have ever tasted! I enjoyed the mixture of chocolate brownie with sweet, melted marshmallows that was topped off with vanilla ice cream and chocolate flakes. A real winner of a dessert! The food was definitely the highlight of the restaurant, and I would go back there to dine again. The prices of food and drinks were also reasonable given the quality of the food. The only downside to the restaurant was that it was very crowded and noisy both inside and outside; a sign of its popularity, but it didn't make for the best dining atmosphere. On the whole, a great restaurant that I will have to visit again sometime for drinks, a good burger and chips.

Poor service - below average food. We visited the A&C for lunch. We were very disappointed with the level of service. We ordered two cocktails and food items. Our 2 salads and 2 starters arrived and the tomatos were old and chalky and rocket leaves were wilted and yellow. We could not see or taste any prawns in the prawn croquettes. By the time we finished our meals, the cocktails still hadn't arrived and there were no waitstaff to check whether we needed anything. We then went to the counter to pay our bill and informed the attendant that our cocktails did not arrive and asked if we could please remove the cocktails from the total bill. The attendant just said "fair dinkum" and did not otherwise apologise. All in all, it was a very negative experience.

Great vibe. What a great place, was packed when we got there, wine a bit pricey, loved all the different parts and vibes going on, ended up at pizza place next door, service a bit slow but they were super busy, great pizza, would go back

Best burgers ever! I was in piggy heaven. Still drooling thinking about the pork roll burger, definitely have to go back sometime

Never. again. Worst lunch ever ... Ordered the brioche beef burger without bacon and as I cut into the patty it was pink and raw. I thought maybe it was done "rare" but as I put it to my lips it was stone cold and gooey (raw mince) .
The wait staff were really nice about it and sent it back to the kitchen. They returned with a new entire meal ...
However there was now bacon on the burger and as I cut into it again it was still really pink in the middle just slightly more cooked on the edges. At this stage all my friends had finished their meals and I didn't want to cause a giant scene so I picked at it. Scraped away raw mince and bacon. The brioche bun was so stale so I left that too. Rubbery cheese. Left that. Cold, tasteless salad. No sauce. The only good think about my meal was the chips and aioli ... Sorry but just not good enough. Never returning.

3/10. This place is a great venue with good cocktails, but not great food. I got the roast pork roll which was quite cheap and large although the pork was a quite dry and flavourless and the bread roll was stale. I do however think there should be a limit to how many people can be in the venue at one time when serving food. We had a big table for a friends birthday and it was so crowded that people kept bumping in to the back of our chairs and trying to steal them as soon as someone got up. I get that it's popular but while dinner is being served it's a nightmare, we ended up going somewhere else because it was ridiculous.

Unsatisfactory. My two, and only two forays in to this place have been dreadful experiences for me. The staff either don't bother keeping-up attentive service, or, more likely,
the place is simply too densely-packed. Drink-prices are all over the place.
The music is always too loud. Requests re table menu items are never responded to.
And, do NOT leave your car in Alfred Street. Have seen inebriated clients walking out of there and then make merry by jumping on other people's car bonnets.
Anyone with a reasonable supply of oxygen to the brain ought to avoid this so-called establishment.

Not a good choice for our committee's end of year dinner. So noisy we couldn't talk to the person next to us and the music "couldn't be turned down". Also chilly and no room inside. Very disappointed with the food. Pile of average meat, 8 potatoes and half a full garlic! No indication of special meals on the menu (gluten free). Service was fast - one plus. We headed off after first course to find coffee and dessert - and a place to talk.

Great place as a local. As locals we quite often walk up to A&C for something to eat when we can't be bothered cooking dinner and have never been disappointed. Staff and friendly and professional, food tasty with the moist pork and delicious salads. No complaints

Horrific Experience. I booked the "Vanguard Room" for a company Xmas party after visiting this place over a weekend and being initially impressed with the casual dining theme.
My advice is don't do it! Horrific does not even come close in describing the "Experience" We arrived at 8.30pm to be told the table was not ready and waited on the footpath whilst hordes of drunk revellers fought for space at the central bar where finally we were seated crammed up in indian file with other patrons pushing against the backs of the cheap fold up chairs.
The noise was so loud that when the "dedicated" waiter finally arrived he could not hear to take the order unless you had your tongue stuck halfway down his ear canal. It was impossible to get to the bar so I asked for a tab for the table so the the random waiter could arrange the drinks as I was the payer and was then told I needed to hand over my credit card and licence. We should of left then but as some food was ordered I complied under protest allowing myself to be open to fraud and identity theft. Everything just spiralled further into a nightmare - somebody poured a drink from upstairs down my wifes back and I got gobbed by a woman bar stander when my chair barely touched her getting up to try and pay the bill and get to hell out of there! This took another 20 minutes of fighting to get to the bar to retrieve my card & licence and God knows what I paid for - it was only 10:15pm and I wanted to get the hell out of there! To put tables in the central bar area was just plain stupid considering the crush and demand at the bar for this time of year. Obviously the owners don't care about the food service and are more interested in raking in cash from alcohol sales. It was an unfair imposition to put on the wait staff who plainy could not cope. If you want a Swill Bar experience over Xmas this is the place to go- thats if you can find the bar.
I am not a complainer this is the first review I have ever done - it was such an awful episode I just had to put pen to paper.

I came here for a few drinks upon recommendation from a member of staff from another restaurant. New to town, and I was impressed. Really cool, hppening place. Just drinks, but awesome

Group of 3 for a Tuesday lunch. Only two waiters so impossibly slow service. Chicken was dry. Disappointed. And I'm not one to complain very often.

Long lunch - big tick. Recommended for a long weekend lunch, we had a group of 20 & ordered a bunch of the Pimms Jugs for the table to get the ball rolling...so good that everyone stayed on the jugs for the remainder of lunch. Booking was from 12 - 3pm, food arrived promptly, it was all good, the service was awesome. Great to see an establishment that can work in well with big groups (and we were a respectful big group) well done to the A&C staff it made our day!
