It was that time again, which has gone fast, meeting my friend again in South Bank - usual business, lunch and a movie. The deal was that it had to be cheap again, and one place I knew was kind of cheap - or at least I perceived it to be - was not going to be open for a while longer. So, walking down the street full of plenty of options, it was a matter of finding one that was both open, and new. This one was open, only just starting to, with the waitress being willing for service. Luckily, there was a lunch special which was relatively affordable.

This place sort of needs the lunch special for some thoroughfare with clientele as the price is a bit exuberant. Note, there are some places along here that are a bit more up-market than others but it is usually because of more fancy fare, something a bit exotic or justified as they make sure that it goes beyond just having a good meal. While .... good, this place is kind of forgettable in the long run.

The service was not incompetent, and it did show some signs of being professional. However, with trying to order meals the waitress could have tried to upsell the meals a bit, or at least encouraged by asking if anything else was wanted (I would be lying if I said no to that). It wasn't all bad, as at first she was offering water and went through the options - still, sparkling and mineral, in which my friend and I got mineral. For something different, it is good and refreshing.

To the credit of Obsession, it manages to escape the usual trapping of most Chinese places outside of Chinatown and Market Square. Actually, overall the menu is tiny for the cuisine, though objectively overall it still gives the diners a fare bit of variety to choose from. Influences from the surrounding neighbours are taken on board, with some Malaysian, some Singaporean and some Indian items on the menu among others. Looking at the meals on the menu, none of them are seeming to be just the same sauce with a different meat. Seafood features more prominently, getting featured first with the main meals which must mean they take pride in it. There is also a bar menu with cocktails, wines, liqueurs and all that - even coffee is an option.

From the lunch specials menu, I ordered the classic and reliable Mee Goreng. This one had potato, egg, chicken, prawns, peas, tomato and chili mixed through the noodles. It was topped with a generous amount of lettuce. The serving side was fairly substantial. They certainly were not being stringent with the toppings, and the they were good - the prawns nice and juicy, the chicken was tender and it had a small bit of spice mixed throughout it - it could have been a bit spicier, or a lot as I love my spicy food. The noodles were well cooked, and mixing it in with some fresh lettuce made it quite well-rounded. All up, passable.

Finishing off, I went to get a coffee. They use one of the less common blends here, Grinder's. It is a pity that Grinder's isn't as easy to find as something as it is one of the finer varieties to be found in town. It was the usual doppio that I had. As a cup, it was half decent. Not burnt, a bit on the mild side, well extracted - I can't complain about it. The coffee was serviceable.

Well, overall I place it as not bad. In terms of Chinese food, it is far better than many of the local takeaways but it is not something that could stand alongside the great wonders that can be found in Chinatown and Sunnybank. If it wanted to be better, a more focused menu could really help - either focus on getting the best parts of Chinese, or a certain region and really go for it. That would help it immensely. Also, with such a nice look to it the service was even more vague than many counter service restaurants that I have visited. For it to be on the same sort of footing as many of its nearby competitors, the service probably needs to honed in a bit more and perhaps encourage ordering a lot - they seem one place that could bank on that. This does have a bit of potential, but I think it needs to start being more out there since it sort of blends in away from the rest of the options.

Maybe I would like it a bit better with more focus on atmosphere, but at the moment I merely can just say, "eh". There are plenty better places around. It is not so much that there is anything wrong with it, but it seems lacking for something with such a great up-front presentation. However, I will contend, maybe another time to come here is needed to truly give it justice - try more, bring a bigger group and all that. Effort will always be acknowledged where it is exerted, but the end results here should be more than they were.

Not as many options as your run of the mill Chinese restaurant. Not a bad selection of Hong Kong style dishes. Black Pepper Chicken is the pick. Overpriced for my liking but generally not the worst choice you can make on this restaurant strip.

Food was tasty and service was excellent. Initially we were seated a bit too close to the kitchen for comfort but the staff were happy to oblige when we asked to move. It is definitely more expensive than your local, suburban Chinese restaurant but it is also more of a fine dining experience.

Reasonable Value and Quality. Have lunched with friends at this restaurant over several years and we keep coming back. The drinks are standard plus prices by the glass for wine or bottle for other brews. The full menu is extensive but, seeing it's lunch, we stick to the special lunch menu that has 10 or so choices such as Mongolian Lamb, Singapore Noodles, Forbidden Palace Pork, San Choy Bow etc at about $13. I always have the vegetable curry (see picture). It has fresh flavours with tofu and vegetables in a medium curry sauce with fragrant rice. Always quite delicious and complements a cold beer on a hot day. This dish is also on the full menu at over $20 - I assume if you ordered that it would be on a bigger plate or more curry added but you can't complain for lunch.

Just gets the thumbs up. Like so many of the South bank restaurants Obsession isn't bad but it's not great. Service, food, ambiance all average and on that basis pricing expensive. I'm going to upset some people here but the overall South bank dining experience is disappointing and well below cities such as Melbourne

Very Good. This restaurant has been under new management for 18 months. It now seems as good as before. The food is the highlight and the decor (I was told some redecoration is planned), plus the piano and jazz. The wine list is pretty good. Service is good although at busy times you might have to wait a little longer than usual. The bar is is nice spot to wait for a table! Recommended.

Mixed Bag. Lovely atmosphere in the heart of the southbank/parkland area.

The service was great. Waiters were all very friendly.

I was a bit shocked when I opened the menu - as the meals were a bit pricey!!

Two of our three meals were delicious! Singapore noodles and Laksa soup. The garlic prawns however were shockingly awful! They looked fabulous - but tasted truly TERRIBLE! Never before have I eaten only HALF a garlic prawn with NO desire to even pretend to be polite and finish it!

We were in the outdoors part which I think is still the same restaurant??

Dined here with my sister, thought the menu was excellent and prices reasonable for SouthBank. Very much enjoyed the pianist's sections on the night. A very pleasant dining experience.

Excellent, Must Try!. Service is always freindly and the food is fantastic. I have been told that it is not the best value around, how ever 3 out of 3 times I have been there I have been very happy with the quality of food. This restaurant has made my night every time. Try the Double Cooked Duck!!!!

Will return again!. I'm not massively knowledgeable on what makes good and bad chinese food, but i loved my experience at Obsession. i ordered the sizzling mongolion lamb and it was very appetising and presented beautifully, the staff were courteous and the piano player that was in on the friday night we went really added to the atmosphere. lovely place that i look forward to visiting again in the future!

Excellent menu. I quite liked the menu layout and dishes on offer at obsession. The chilli calamari is not to be taken lightly, i loved it, but for my date it was far too hot. Mains were of a good size. Live instrumentals is always a nice touch

Good food. I ate at Obsession the other night with a friend. The waitstaff were a little pushy and pretty much forced us to order rice when my friend didn't want rice. But aside from that everyone was nice, food came out quickly and tasted good. Pretty good experience.

AMAZING!. We were surprised to stumble upon this little gem on southbank one night...not your ordinary asian cuisine, much fancier and well worth the price. staff were great, attentive and welcoming. we had duck in plum cinnamon sauce...do try it, it was incredible!! had such a wonderful dining experience there. will be returning on a special occasion.

Nice surprise. Stumbled into this restaurant as a visitor and was pleasantly surprised. This is not your local surburban Chinese but a more refined version. Sure, it costs more but the food is quite impressive.

I'm Chinese and sure, it's slightly styled to a western palate but the produce and freshness of the food meant that it made for a lovely night out.

Yummy!. My Mum and I went here for lunch one day when we had to go into the city.

We ordered off the $12.50 lunch menu and really enjoyed our meals. The taste was really good, but there wasn't enough!! I wanted more of my satay chicken rather than a massive pile of rice, BUT it was still very enjoyable.

The staff were very friendly but they did get a bit annoying always wanting us to buy more drinks. My Mum ordered a Coke but I stuck with water. They kept asking me if I wanted a drink and the second my Mum finished her Coke, they came over and asked if she wanted another. They proceeded to ask us at least half a dozen times. It didn't irritate me enough that I got angry over it but we just wanted to eat our meal in peace.

We sat outside on the footpath and I don't think they were letting people sit inside. The inside decor was really appealing - it would be lovely for a function.

I was shocked at the prices when I opened the menu. It's always been at the back of my mind that Chinese food is really affordable in Brisbane. Sure the décor of the restaurant was slightly fancier than your average Chinese take away joint around the corner, and there were fresh water lilies on the tables and all...but almost charging almost thirty dollars for Mongolian lamb? I told the other travel bunnie there and then that the food better be good, otherwise I would not be a happy camper. Well what do you know - the food turned out to be extremely tasty.

Isn't it great when you stumble across a great shop, bar or restaurant by chance? This rarely happens to me. Almost every time I dine spontaneously, the experience is less than memorable. That probably goes some way in explaining why I'm adamant about pre
